"I
have been systematically working through reading the Puritan and Reformed CDs I
purchased.
I must say, there is nothing like them
available anywhere.
It is the most amazing collection of works I
know of in one package to date.
In
my opinion, it far surpasses Ages Software and their collections.*
The
Puritan and Reformed material presented on these CDs is exceptional.
I
am continually amazed at the depth and breadth of information in both
collections, and the rarity of works that I now have at my fingertips.
You
have done an immeasurable service for the Kingdom of Christ in making these CDs
available, and every pastor and theologian should own them without question
(they would be foolhardy to pass them by)."

* It is SWRB's
opinion that Ages has done an excellent job in making various Reformed works
available on CD, so much so that we also distribute a number of their CDs at
discounts. Thus, please don't make more out of our publishing this comment than
is warranted, as this is a comment we received from one of our customers and it
expresses his opinion. As for Ages' work, we rejoice whenever the truth is
published, whether through others or through SWRB (as we play only a very small
part in the revival of classic Reformation, Puritan and Covenanter thought that
is now taking place worldwide through God's marvelous grace). The publication
of the best Reformers and Puritans of the past is one of the greatest needs of
our time, as this extends the blessings that come through faithful preachers
and authors into our day and into the future. Lord willing, the growth in the
publishing of faithful works from the past will help stem the tide of the great
declension and unfaithfulness which we are now witnessing all around us, even
(sadly) among many churches that still call themselves "Presbyterian"
and/or "Reformed." So please pray together with us that our Lord will
multiple the number of faithful publishers and publications, and that He will
give many the heart to stand for the truth no matter the consequences (as He
has done for our faithful forefathers, who resisted Satan and sin unto blood
and even to martyrdom in many cases). -- RB.
"SWRB's
Puritan and Reformation CD libraries are an invaluable source for the study of
the history and theology of classic Reformation theology. The collection is
remarkable not only for depth of content, but also for the rarity of many of
the works. Most seminary libraries will not have even a percentage of the works
available on these CD-ROMs. I cannot imagine anyone working in Reformation /
historical theology that would not want to use the Puritan and Reformed
libraries!"

"I
just received your CD collection. One bit of advice: you should instruct your
customers to take about 1 week off just to peruse the tables of contents for
these CD's, followed by another week off, in order to recover from the
state of shock in which they will find themselves.
In
all seriousness, this collection is almost impossible to describe. It has to be
seen to be believed. As a pastor, my library has just increased
dramatically.
As a Ph.D. student in Puritan and Post-Reformation studies, I have immediate
access to many of the same works for which I would normally need to access
through rare book rooms of theological libraries.
Thank
you for this labor of love. Thank you for making it accessible, both
financially and technologically. May the Lord richly bless you for this service
to his people."

"You
all are doing a wonderful service by making all these materials so readily

rare book library with all of them in hand... I have found the CD set
invaluable as a tool of scholarship. So once again I commend you brothers for making
it available."

"It's
been several weeks now since I received the CDs and have had some time to
digest some of them. All I can say is, "WOW!" This is truly a
library like no other, and has already paid great dividends not only in my own
personal worship and study, but in my teaching as well. I first balked at the
price, but after seeing the vastness of the material, I almost feel as though
I'm robbing you!
I
pray that the Lord will allow you to get these materials into the hands of as
many ministers as possible."

SWRB CD comment from Dr. Moore:
This
collection of 62 CDs is a truly astounding accomplishment. There is nothing
like this available to the ordinary Christian on the whole face of the earth.
Now,
for the first time ever, ordinary Christians can have direct and near
effortless access to the very cream of Puritan and Reformed, as well as
Covenanter, literature.
These
books are often in fascinating first editions and many are electronically
linked and indexed for the first time. The ordinary Christian may here dig
into a simply staggering wealth of literature, from devotional and sermonic
material to technical and scholarly works. Even in the days of the Long Reformation
itself ordinary Christians didn't get to see this kind of library -- most
couldn't read for a start, and even those who could, would never have been able
to afford to buy even a hundredth part of the material on these CDs. Truly we
are without excuse!
And
the significance of this collection goes even beyond that. No longer do we have
to wait for modern Reformed publishing houses to predict that a particular
Reformation or Puritan book will be sufficiently popular to make it economical
to reprint, or to deem it "safe" enough to be let loose on the modern
evangelical church. Rather, we are now able to see for ourselves the whole
range of the Puritan and Reformed publishing enterprise, including views that
are usually suppressed by most modern devotees of "Puritan" piety!
Buy
these CDs while you can, and find out for yourself what the First and Second
Reformations were really all about! You'll be truly amazed, and, by God's
grace, will grow from being an ordinary Christian to being an extraordinary
one. What they used to say of the Puritan John Flavel's preaching, can be
said of these CDs: they are "hissing hot"!

"This
side of eternity I'll never be able to repay the favor you have done mankind by
bringing these... CDs together.
The
first week of reading I grew more as a Christian reading those rich, pure
Gospel Commentators than I have in 18 years of Christian life. After reading some of
the Puritan CDs I have to get the Reformation set if it kills me. A fire is
burning within me. These... CDs are liable to start a revival fire unseen in
any generation... the Gospel in its pure form is seen in these... CDs.
Sir,
I cant say enough. What a treasure! I'll never be able to repay you this side of
heaven, but when we get there I am sure you will see the rich fruits of your
labor. God bless you for not being money hungry but wanting to see Christians
grow in the Lord... I love you even though we have never met, you have
helped me in my Christian walk tremendously with these... CDs.
I
am not bragging on the flesh, I am just giving honor where honor is due. The
Holy Ghost will take these CDs and light a fire unseen and unheard of. God
bless you all at Still Waters."

I am amazed at the quality and quantity of
the literature...
I
cannot imagine any other single thing being done by any man or group of men in
the earth today that is of such extensive, present, and enduring value as
this CD work is.
God
be praised that he uses sickly and weak men to forward his kingdom, that the
work may not be mistaken to be wrought by the might of men, but by his Spirit.
His strength is perfected in weakness."

NEW ARRIVALS & OUT OF PRINT RESOURCES ON SALE (& MORE

Item 1. M'CRIE,
THOMAS
Life of Knox. Containing
Illustrations of the History of the Reformation in Scotland; with Biographical
Notices of the Principal Reformers, & Sketches of the Progress of
Literature in Scotland During the Sixteenth Century (1855)
Iain
Murray, in his stirring introduction to Cunningham's Historical Theology writes, "The third event marking
the commencement of this spiritual movement was the publication of a book in
1811. It was the biography of John Knox by Thomas M'Crie. All over Scotland this work was used to
revive the memory of the great Reformer and nothing could have been a more
telling protest against the stifling influence of Moderatism. It brought many a
student and minister into the experience once described by James Fraser of Brae
in his Memoirs: 'When
I read Knox, I thought I saw another scheme of divinity, much more agreeable to
the Scriptures and to my experience than the modern.'" M'Crie followed
this up in 1819 with a biography of Knox's great successor, Andrew Melville
(Life of Andrew Melville [2 vol.], Hardcover photocopy $64.00;
cerlox photocopy $29.99), and these two books became known as the 'Iliad and
Odyssey of the Scottish Church.' Just as Homer's heroes fired the hearts of
many imitators so M'Crie's biographies aroused a holy ambition in many to
follow the noble example of these two spiritual giants." M'Crie's work is
an undisputed classic regarding this fiery reformer. It exhibits information on
Knox and the Scottish Reformation which has been hid in manuscripts and books
which are now little known or consulted. Knox may be the most pertinent first
Reformation Reformer to study in our day of widespread idolatry, theological
and civil pluralism, anti-Christian government, humanistic law, relativism,
false ecumenicity, and the revival of that "masterpiece of Satan,"
Roman Catholicism. Read everything that you can get
your hands on either by or about Knox; you'll never be the same again!
This is the full unedited text of 484 pages, not available from any other publisher
(to our knowledge).

Item 2. KNOX,
JOHN
The Works of John Knox
(6 volumes)
Here is a chance to touch the flame that ignited whole nations for
covenanted Reformation. John Knox is considered by many to have been the most
biblically consistent and thoroughgoing of all the great Reformers of the
sixteenth century.
"John Knox was in fact the embodiment of the Scottish Reformation as its
preacher, theologian, liturgist, historian, and catalyst for reform." (Hall
and Hall, ed. Paradigms in Polity: Classic Readings in Reformed and
Presbyterian Church Government
[Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1994], p. 219)."With this
concern for purity of worship," notes Kevin Reed regarding Knox, "it
is no wonder that the Scottish Reformation was the most thorough among any of
the Protestant nations." (From the introduction to John Knox, True and
False Worship: A Vindication of the Doctrine that the Sacrifice of the Mass is
Idolatry [Dallas, TX:
Presbyterian Heritage Publications, 1550 reprinted 1994], p.14.). "I know
not," states George Smeaton, "if ever so much piety and genius were
lodged in such a frail and weak body. Certain I am, that it will be difficult
to find one in whom the gifts of the Holy Spirit shone so bright to the comfort
of the church." (Cited in Thomas M'Crie, The Life of John Knox [1831], p. 272.) The Works of John
Knox listed here is the
complete six volume set collected by David Laing, 1895. Concerning this 6
volume collection, Kyle, in The Mind of John Knox (p. 14) notes, "The only real basis for a study of Knox's thought must be the
writings of the reformer himself. From 1846 to 1864, David Laing collected and
edited nearly all of Knox's extant writings. This remarkable collection, which
scholars regard highly, is indispensable for any serious study of John Knox."

KNOX, JOHN
Vol. 1 - Unedited History of the Reformation in Scotland (Book
1 & 2) and 18 appendices.
Reid,
in his Trumpeter of God,
notes that Knox "wrote history as a prophet"
and that, wherever he could, he used original sources, many of which he
reproduced. Furthermore, he proclaims that this "is still a work that no
one interested in this area can afford to neglect." As W.C. Dickinson has
commented, "it is his monument, for in it he puts
flesh and blood on the whole Reformation movement." Innes (John
Knox, p. 45) says of
this work, "[t]he author who has enabled us to see his own confused and
changing age under 'the broad clear light of that wonderful book' the
History of the Reformation in Scotland,
and who outside that book was the utterer of many an armed and winged word
which pursues and smites us to this day, must have been born with nothing less
than genius -- genius to observe, to narrate, and to judge. Even had he written
as a mere recluse and critic, looking out upon his world from a monk's cell or
from the corner of a housetop, the vividness, the tenderness, the sarcasm and
the humour would still have been there." Moreover, Burton writes, "[t]here certainly is in the English language no other
parallel to it in clearness, vigour, and picturesqueness with which it renders
the history of a stirring period" (cited in Innes, John Knox, p. 45). This photocopy edition far
surpasses the edited down version that is available in paperback. Over 600
pages of stirring Reformation history.

KNOX, JOHN
Vol. 2 - Unedited History of the Reformation in Scotland (Book
3, 4 and 5) and six appendices, index, etc.
"Knox
portrayed the origins and development of a movement and not a mere chronology
of events... Knox based his arguments on original sources and he often cited
the documents in full. When Knox's History is compared to the contemporary
vernacular narratives of Bishop Leslie and Sir James Melville, the superiority
of Knox's work becomes evident. For the most part, these writers were
preoccupied with petty details and had no conception of the momentous issues
that hung on the events they recorded... Knox used
history to demonstrate his single-track philosophy. And his philosophy said:
'The hearts of men, their thoughts, and their actions are but in the hands of
God.' Lee said Knox's History was a sermon without an audience, a preaching book, one
long inflammatory speech in behalf of God's truth as the reformer saw it." (Kyle, The Mind of John Knox, p. 13). Our editions of volumes one and
two of Knox's Works
contain the only full, unedited version of
Knox's massive History of the Reformation in Scotland available today.

Item 3. BROWN,
JOHN (of Wamphray)
A Pious and Elaborate
Treatise Concerning Prayer; & the Answer of Prayer (1745 edition)
"The
clear and Scriptural ardency of his piety from this well-know treatise is
apparent" wrote Burns, concerning this title (Johnston, Treasury of the
Scottish Covenant, p.
342. The publisher's preface notes that this was the mature work of one who
had suffered much for Christ.
They state it "is among his last works; which he wrote at the close of a
long walk with God; and in exile; while he was in Holland about 20 years, from
his banishment (Anno 1661) until he ended his days, and entered into the joy of
the Lord... Moreover the gentleman, now a minister, who procured this practical
treatise of prayer, in Holland, and brought it home, can attest that it is
genuine; and though many pieces on the subject be come
abroad before this, yet the intelligent Reader may find it is inferior to none,
and in some respects, preferable to any of them." Sample chapters
include: "The greatness of the sin of neglecting prayer, manifested, in 39
particulars;" "The Unregenerate are obliged to pray;" "The
necessity and usefulness of family prayer, manifested:" "Some
encouragements to prayer mentioned;" and much more. It is for works such
as these that Johnston (in The Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 339) says of Brown that "(h)e
has been regarded (as) the most important theologian of the second period of
Scottish Presbyterianism."
Joel Beeke concurs, writing, "John Brown of Wamphray (1610-1679) has been
rightly called the most important Scottish theologian of his day. He was especially gifted at merging profound doctrinal truth with
warm Christ-centered zeal and godly piety. Samuel Rutherford wrote of him, 'I always [had]... a great
love to dear Mr. John Brown because I thought I saw Christ in him more than in
his brethren.'" 308 pages.

Item 4. AMES,
WILLIAM
A Fresh Suit Against Human
Ceremonies in God's Worship (1633)
A
rare facsimile from this Calvinist divine who was one
of the most acute controversialists of his age. This highly influential
Puritan theologian was assistant to the president of the Synod of Dort and
Professor of Divinity at Franecker.
He died in 1633. In this massive work, Ames aims at vindicating the Lord's
sovereign Kingship in matters of worship (i.e. the regulative principle of
worship). The summary and general thrust of the detailed and precise
argumentation found in this book is beautifully encapsulated by the words
inscribed on its title page, "I hate vayn inventions: but thy law doe I
love" (Ps. 119:113). Almost 700 pages.

Item 5. DABNEY,
ROBERT LEWIS
Discussions of Robert Lewis
Dabney
(3 volumes, 1891)
Warfield
called Dabney "the most conspicuous figure and the
leading theological guide of the Southern Presbyterian Church, the most
prolific theological writer that Church has as yet produced." These
three volumes of articles and essays vindicate Warfield's statement. "This
is not a book to be read and returned to the library shelf," states the
well known Baptist minister Al Martin, "rather, as I have found to my own
profit, it ought to be read, digested, and kept close at hand as a guide,
companion and constant prod to us." Dr. Archibald Alexander called Dabney,
"the best teacher of theology in the United States, if not the
world." Freundt notes, "Dabney championed the
doctrines of Calvinism and applied them consistently and practically to the
great issues of his times." Indexed, 1901 pages.

An Apology for the Book of
Psalms in Five Letters (1852)
This
book argues for exclusive Psalmody.
It includes a detailed history (ancient [the Fathers,
Augustine, Apostolic Constitutions, etc.] and modern [Wickliffe, Luther, Calvin, etc., to the author's day])
of Psalmody, gives reasons for retaining the book of Psalms and considers
numerous objections. It takes on both Watts (and his anti-Trinitarianism) and Wesley. 223 pages.

Item 8. GOUGE,
WILLIAM
Of Domestical Duties (1622)
Gouge,
a celebrated Puritan Divine, was a member of the Westminster Assembly and Darling (Cyclpaedia
Bibliographica) calls
him "eminently learned and a preacher of great influence." Many consider this one of the best books ever written on
the family. It includes eight treatises: 1. An Exposition of that
part of Scripture out of which Domestical Duties are raised; 2. Duties between
Man and Wife; 3. Particular Duties of Wives; 4. Particular Duties of Husbands;
5. Duties of Children; 6. Duties of Parents; 7. Duties of Servants; 8. Duties
of Masters. If you are interested in family matters it is not likely that
you will find a better or more thoroughly Scriptural book on this topic! Over 700 pages.

REFORMED PRESBYTERY
Act, Declaration, And
Testimony, For The Whole Of The Covenanted Reformation, As
Attained To, And Established In, Britain and Ireland; Particularly Betwixt The
Years 1638 and 1649, Inclusive. As, Also, Against All The Steps Of Defection
From Said Reformation, Whether In Former Or Later Times, Since The Overthrow Of
That Glorious Work, Down To This Present Day (1876)
Upholds the original work of the Westminster Assembly and testifies to the abiding worth and
truth formulated in the Westminster family of documents. Upholds and defends
the crown rights of King Jesus in church and state, denouncing those who would
remove the crown from Christ's head by denying His right to rule (by His law)
in both the civil and ecclesiastical spheres. Testifies to the received doctrine,
government, worship, and discipline of the Church of Scotland in her purest
(reforming) periods. Applies God's Word to the Church's corporate attainments.
It "is an instrument, which merits attention, from the time, in which it
was written; the character, circumstances and faithfulness of the compilers;
its parts, lucid declaration, and pointed argument. --To evidence regard to the
injunction, Song 1:8; to exemplify the resolution of the Psalmist, Ps. 77:12;
and tell to the generation following, Ps. 48:13; 145:4, a historical view of
the church, in Scotland, from A.D. 300 till 1688, is given: with a judicial
approbation of the earnest contendings and attainments of the faithful, and a
strong and pointed judicial condemnation of error and the promoters thereof.
This retrospective view furnishes matter for the young and for the aged
disciple, to contemplate their glorious Lord, in providential procedure,
towards his own people; --to distinguish between the providential and preceptive
will of God; to estimate his people as weighed in the balances of the
sanctuary; --and their own profession, covenant and organic identity with the
faithful, who have gone before. Argument of principle, arising from historical
facts, follows; and the document closes with doctrinal declaration in
testamentary and polemic form." (The Original Covenanter and Contending
Witness magazine, Dec.
17, 1993 [whole year in one volume $15.98 P, $29.00 HP], pp. 557-558). Shows
the church's great historical victories (such as the National and Solemn League
and Covenant, leading to the Westminster Assembly) and exposes her enemies
actions (e.g. the Prelacy of Laud; the Independency, sectarianism, covenant
breaking and ungodly toleration set forth by the likes of Cromwell [and the
Independents that conspired with him]; the Erastianism and civil sectarianism
of William of Orange, etc.). It is not likely
that you will find a more consistent working out of the principles of Calvinism
anywhere. Deals with the most important matters relating to the individual,
the family, the church and the state. Sets forth a faithful historical
testimony of God's dealings with men during some of the most important days of
church history. A basic text that should be mastered by all Christians. 217 pages.

CALVIN, JOHN
The Bondage & Liberation
of the Will: A Defense of the Orthodox Doctrine of Human Choice Against Pighius (1543, 1996)
"In
the belief that the 1539 edition of Calvin's Institutes, and in particular its chapters on free
choice and predestination, constituted a greater danger than did the other
'Lutheran' writings, the Dutch Roman Catholic theologian Albert Pighius wrote a
response entitled Ten Books on Human Free Choice and Divine Grace (1542). Calvin, when he saw Pighius's
work, felt a pressing need to respond to Pighius's first six books, that is,
those on free choice. The result was The Bondage and Liberation of the Will (1543). The
Bondage and Liberation of the Will is
undoubtedly the most significant of Calvin's works hitherto not translated in
English. This is in striking contrast to Luther's study on the same
topic, which is one of his best-known publications." This is Calvin's "fullest treatment of the relation between
grace and free will, and contains important material not found elsewhere in his
writings. It also contains far more discussion of the early church
fathers than does any other of Calvin's works, apart from the Institutes. It is high time that this major work is
made available to those whose knowledge of Calvin is confined to English
translations" (back cover). 303 pages.

The Reformed Pastor
In
his fervent plea for the discharge of the spiritual obligations of the
ministry, Baxter, in the words of his contemporary,
Thomas Manton, "came nearer the apostolic writings than any man in the
age." A century later Philip Doddridge wrote, "The Reformed
Pastor is a most extraordinary book... many good men are but shadows of what
(by the blessing of God) they might be, if the maxims and measures laid down in
that incomparable Treatise were strenuously pursued." From the Puritan Paperback series

DURHAM, JAMES
A Complete Commentary Upon the Book of Revelation
(1658, 1799 edition, 2 volumes)
"After all that has been written it would not be easy to find
a more sensible and instructive work than this old-fashioned exposition... the
mystery of the Gospel fills it with sweet savour" writes Spurgeon of this work (cited in Johnston, Treasury
of the Scottish Covenant,
p. 318, emphasis added). Carstairs, in the
introduction to this huge set, comments that the judicious reader "will count the author an interpreter, one among a thousand."
This book touches on many subjects "with some practical observations,
and several digressions, necessary for vindicating, clearing, and confirming
many weighty and important truths." Furthermore, along with a detailed verse by verse
interpretation of the book of Revelation it includes (at the end of volume two)
a brief summary (containing 24 pages) of the whole book. The complete photocopy set is massive
and covers 1750 pages! We would also note that
we are offering only a cerlox bound photocopy edition of this work at the
present time. This is because Old Paths Publications intends on retypsetting
the complete work, adding an introduction (or two), and publishing this set as
a regular hardcover book. The Old Paths hardcover should be ready in a year or
so and we hope to make it available to you through our catalogue at that time.
You may want to wait for the hardcover as it will have the advantage of being
retypeset (though it will likely be much more expensive); but if you absolutely
need Durham now the cerlox bound photocopy is available.

Item 13. LOVE,
CHRISTOPHER
Taking Heaven By Storm
(5 Sermons on 4 Cassettes or 5 Videos)
Read
by Elder Lyndon Dohms, these sermons are taken from Love's Zealous Christian
Taking Heaven By Holy Violence
($7.98 P, $19.00 HP). Love was a Covenanted English Presbyterian who was
beheaded by Cromwell's soldiers. Ultimately, Love was
executed for His faithfulness to the cause of Christ and the Solemn League and
Covenant -- a covenant that Cromwell (who we call "the Judas of the
Covenant") swore and then broke repeatedly. Portions
of the testimony Love gave just before he was martyred preface these sermons.
The sermons themselves are classic examples of Puritan preaching, dealing
with the Christian life at various levels not often heard in modern preaching. Here Love teaches us to be moderate in
the indifferent things of this world, but not in the things of the Lord -- as we
are exhorted to be on fire for the kingdom of heaven. This set contains five
sermons, with two sermons included on the last cassette.

BARROW, REG
Saul in the Cave of Adullam: A
Testimony Against the Fashionable Sub-Calvinism of Doug Wilson (Editor of Credenda/Agenda
Magazine); and, for Classical Protestantism and the Attainments of the Second
Reformation (1996)
Doug
Wilson and others at Credenda/Agenda used their magazine to publicly attack and slander Reg
Barrow (President of Still Waters Revival Books) in a column that they call the
"Cave of Adullam." This invective was Credenda's response to Barrow's comments on Knox
Ring (where Barrow noted that John Calvin would have
excommunicated John Frame for the apostasy that he manifests in his new book on
worship). Numerous private attempts were unsuccessfully made (by Barrow
and others) to call Wilson to repentance for this slander. Ultimately, charges
for violation of the ninth commandment were brought (in accord with Matt.
18:15-17) against Wilson by Barrow. This book recounts the salient points of
the controversy (and the Matthew 18 proceedings) between Wilson and Barrow -- in
their actual email debates!
Also included is Barrow's demonstration of why
Calvin would have excommunicated Frame, Greg Price's Testimony
Against The Unfounded Charges of Anabaptism and Barrow's "Pornography, the Anabaptists and Doug
Wilson's Civil Antinomianism." These debates are a classic example of the
differences that exist today between paleopresbyterians (Barrow) and neopresbyterians (Wilson). Wilson's charges against
Barrow, of Anabaptism, separatism, etc. are all refuted under a mountain of
quotations from Reformation source documents. Barrow's refutations of Wilson's
spurious charges bring to light many aspects of Reformation thought that have
been lost or forgotten in our day. Besides the initial controversy (over Frame
and worship) and the restoration process (set forth in Matthew 18:15-17), this
book should be of special interest to all of those who love the "old
paths" of truth -- trod by our forefathers in the Reformed faith -- for some
of the most pressing issues of our day (regarding the individual, church and
state) are addressed herein. Classic statements, cited by Barrow, not only
exhibit the wisdom which God granted the best Reformers of both the first and
second Reformations, but also specifically demonstrate how Wilson and
many other modern Protestants actually reject the Reformation at many points
(all their protests not withstanding).
