Full SWRB CD comment from Dr. McMahon:

"I have been systematically working through reading the Puritan and Reformed CDs I purchased.

I must say, there is nothing like them available anywhere.

It is the most amazing collection of works I know of in one package to date.

In my opinion, it far surpasses Ages Software and their collections.*

The Puritan and Reformed material presented on these CDs is exceptional.

I am continually amazed at the depth and breadth of information in both collections, and the rarity of works that I now have at my fingertips.

You have done an immeasurable service for the Kingdom of Christ in making these CDs available, and every pastor and theologian should own them without question (they would be foolhardy to pass them by)."

* It is SWRB's opinion that Ages has done an excellent job in making various Reformed works available on CD, so much so that we also distribute a number of their CDs at discounts. Thus, please don't make more out of our publishing this comment than is warranted, as this is a comment we received from one of our customers and it expresses his opinion. As for Ages' work, we rejoice whenever the truth is published, whether through others or through SWRB (as we play only a very small part in the revival of classic Reformation, Puritan and Covenanter thought that is now taking place worldwide through God's marvelous grace). The publication of the best Reformers and Puritans of the past is one of the greatest needs of our time, as this extends the blessings that come through faithful preachers and authors into our day and into the future. Lord willing, the growth in the publishing of faithful works from the past will help stem the tide of the great declension and unfaithfulness which we are now witnessing all around us, even (sadly) among many churches that still call themselves "Presbyterian" and/or "Reformed." So please pray together with us that our Lord will multiple the number of faithful publishers and publications, and that He will give many the heart to stand for the truth no matter the consequences (as He has done for our faithful forefathers, who resisted Satan and sin unto blood and even to martyrdom in many cases). -- RB.

"SWRB's Puritan and Reformation CD libraries are an invaluable source for the study of the history and theology of classic Reformation theology. The collection is remarkable not only for depth of content, but also for the rarity of many of the works. Most seminary libraries will not have even a percentage of the works available on these CD-ROMs. I cannot imagine anyone working in Reformation / historical theology that would not want to use the Puritan and Reformed libraries!"

- Phillip J. Long
Associate Prof. of New Testament

"I just received your CD collection. One bit of advice: you should instruct your customers to take about 1 week off just to peruse the tables of contents for these CD's, followed by another week off, in order to recover from the state of shock in which they will find themselves.

In all seriousness, this collection is almost impossible to describe. It has to be seen to be believed. As a pastor, my library has just increased dramatically. As a Ph.D. student in Puritan and Post-Reformation studies, I have immediate access to many of the same works for which I would normally need to access through rare book rooms of theological libraries.

Thank you for this labor of love. Thank you for making it accessible, both financially and technologically. May the Lord richly bless you for this service to his people."

- Yours for the faith,
Pastor David Owen Filson

"You all are doing a wonderful service by making all these materials so readily available. Having them on my hard drive is BETTER than having access to a rare book library with all of them in hand... I have found the CD set invaluable as a tool of scholarship. So once again I commend you brothers for making it available."

- Dr. E. Calvin Beisner

Examining Contemporary Revivalism, as well as other books, scholarly papers, and contributions to various anthologies).

"It's been several weeks now since I received the CDs and have had some time to digest some of them. All I can say is, "WOW!" This is truly a library like no other, and has already paid great dividends not only in my own personal worship and study, but in my teaching as well. I first balked at the price, but after seeing the vastness of the material, I almost feel as though I'm robbing you!

I pray that the Lord will allow you to get these materials into the hands of as many ministers as possible."

Full SWRB CD comment from Dr. Moore:

This collection of 62 CDs is a truly astounding accomplishment. There is nothing like this available to the ordinary Christian on the whole face of the earth.

Now, for the first time ever, ordinary Christians can have direct and near effortless access to the very cream of Puritan and Reformed, as well as Covenanter, literature.

These books are often in fascinating first editions and many are electronically linked and indexed for the first time. The ordinary Christian may here dig into a simply staggering wealth of literature, from devotional and sermonic material to technical and scholarly works. Even in the days of the Long Reformation itself ordinary Christians didn't get to see this kind of library -- most couldn't read for a start, and even those who could, would never have been able to afford to buy even a hundredth part of the material on these CDs. Truly we are without excuse!

And the significance of this collection goes even beyond that. No longer do we have to wait for modern Reformed publishing houses to predict that a particular Reformation or Puritan book will be sufficiently popular to make it economical to reprint, or to deem it "safe" enough to be let loose on the modern evangelical church. Rather, we are now able to see for ourselves the whole range of the Puritan and Reformed publishing enterprise, including views that are usually suppressed by most modern devotees of "Puritan" piety!

Buy these CDs while you can, and find out for yourself what the First and Second Reformations were really all about! You'll be truly amazed, and, by God's grace, will grow from being an ordinary Christian to being an extraordinary one. What they used to say of the Puritan John Flavel's preaching, can be said of these CDs: they are "hissing hot"!

- Dr Jonathan D. Moore, Cambridge, UK.
(Scholar of 16th and 17th century Calvinistic literature.)

"This side of eternity I'll never be able to repay the favor you have done mankind by bringing these... CDs together.

The first week of reading I grew more as a Christian reading those rich, pure Gospel Commentators than I have in 18 years of Christian life. After reading some of the Puritan CDs I have to get the Reformation set if it kills me. A fire is burning within me. These... CDs are liable to start a revival fire unseen in any generation... the Gospel in its pure form is seen in these... CDs.

Sir, I cant say enough. What a treasure! I'll never be able to repay you this side of heaven, but when we get there I am sure you will see the rich fruits of your labor. God bless you for not being money hungry but wanting to see Christians grow in the Lord... I love you even though we have never met, you have helped me in my Christian walk tremendously with these... CDs.

I am not bragging on the flesh, I am just giving honor where honor is due. The Holy Ghost will take these CDs and light a fire unseen and unheard of. God bless you all at Still Waters."

- Email from the USA

"Thank you so very much for the CDs.

I am amazed at the quality and quantity of the literature...

I cannot imagine any other single thing being done by any man or group of men in the earth today that is of such extensive, present, and enduring value as this CD work is.

God be praised that he uses sickly and weak men to forward his kingdom, that the work may not be mistaken to be wrought by the might of men, but by his Spirit. His strength is perfected in weakness."

BAILLIE, ROBERT

Anabaptism, The True Fountain of Independency, Antinomy, Brownisme, Familisme, and the Most of the Other Errors, Which for the Time Do Trouble the Church of England, Unsealed (1647)

The title continues: "Also the Questions of Paedobaptisme and Dipping Handled from Scripture. In a Second Part of the Dissuasive from the Errors of the Time." Shows the origin, progress and changing character of the Anabaptist's heresies -- many which still afflict the body of Christ in our day (even in so-called "Reformed" circles). A fine defense of the biblical view of baptism is also given, including many answers to Anabaptist (Baptist) objections on this point. A staggering array of "testimonies" (i.e. quotations) are marshalled by Baillie -- both in refuting and setting forth the pernicious Anabaptist teachings. Baillie was one of the Scottish Commissioners sent to the Westminster Assembly. His international perspective and insight (concerning the ecclesiastical and civil battles for the Protestant cause of his day) makes for an interesting backdrop to this title -- not often encountered among most authors dealing with these topics. 220 pages.

BAILLIE, ROBERT

Baillie's Review of Bramhall's Seditious Pamphlet Entitled Fair Warning Against the Scot's Discipline... Also the Holy League and Covenant of these Three Nations Justified and Maintained (1649)
Baillie was "an erudite scholar who had mastered thirteen languages, including Chaldee and Ethiopic" (Cameron, ed., Dictionary of Scottish Church History and Theology
, p. 51) . Shortly after the publication of this title he was deceived by the errors of the Resolutioners (a covenant-breaking faction of Presbyterians in his day); and seeing the failure of his policies, "he died (it was said) of a broken heart" (Ibid.). Baillie here refutes the pretended bishop of London-Derry dealing with many questions of contemporary interest. The "Holy League and Covenant of these Three Nations" named in the title is referring to the Solemn League and Covenant (a international bond between England, Ireland, Scotland, and "all his Majesties dominions" and God) -- which has always been a favorite target of backsliders, malignants, Papists, Prelates, schismatics and other scandal-mongers. 91 pages, very rare.

BAILLIE, ROBERT

The Canterburians Self-Conviction: or an evident demonstration of the avowed Arminianisme, Poperie, and tyrannie of that faction, by their owne confessions; With a postscript for the Personat Jesuite Lysimachus Nicanor, a prime Canterburian. (1641)

Baillie was one of the Scottish commissioners to the Westminster Assembly. An exceedingly rare item, this book was written as the storms of the religious wars between the Puritans and the Prelates were beginning to blow. These were days when nations adopted overtly religious presuppositions and books such as this became international defences of gospel principles against the ecclesiastical (and political) forces of Antichrist -- and his generation of vipers. After rehearsing some of the major incidents of Prelatical persecution against the saints of the most high God, and calling to the English for support of the Covenanted cause of Christ, Baillie gives this stirring summary of his motives in writing this book, "behold I here first upon all hazard do break my pitcher, do hold out my Lamp, and blow my trumpet before the Commissioners of the whole Kingdom, offering to convince that prevalent faction by their own mouth, of Arminianism, Popery, and Tyranny." These were brave and zealous words, for in that day such speech could eventuate in your death. This is not only a historically relevant item, but also a fine defense against the prevailing heresies of the flesh (heresy being a work of the flesh, cf. Gal 5:19-20). The two predominant heresies addressed by Baillie in this book still cover much of the professing Christian world today; these being: (1.) false, man-centered views of salvation (Arminianism and Pelagianism) and (2.) false man-centered views of worship (Liturgical innovationism: either high church or Charismatic). "Baillie fought hard against Arminianism" noted Johnston (The Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 310); making this book especially valuable for today! This is the third edition of 128 pages, plus a 28 page postscript.

BAILLIE, ROBERT

A Dissuasive from the Errors of the Time: Wherein the Tenets of the principal Sects, especially of the Independents, are drawn together in one Map, for the most part, in the words of their own Authors, and their main principles are examined by the Touchstone of the Holy Scriptures (1645)

Chapter titles include: The origin and progress of the Brownists; The doctrine of the Brownists; The origin and progress of the Independents, and of their carriage in New England; The carriage of the Independents in Holland; The carriage of the Independents at London; An enumeration of the common tenets of the Independents; It is unjust scrupulosity to require satisfaction of the true grace of every Church member; Concerning the right of prophesying; Whether the power of ecclesiastical jurisdiction belongs to the people, or to the Presbytery?; Independency is contrary to God's Word; The thousand years of Christ, his visible reign upon Earth, is against Scripture (contra Premillennialism--RB). 274 pages.

BAILLIE, ROBERT

Letters and Journals of Robert Baillie (3 volumes, 1841 edition)

David Laing, ed. (three large volumes, 1841 ed.). Baillie was one of the Scottish delegates to the Westminster Assembly and these volumes cover the period from 1637 to 1662 -- some of the most momentous days in the history of the Reformed faith. These letters contain an intimate insider's look at these days of international religious drama, national covenants, and the writing of the greatest religious Confession ever given to men, the Westminster Confession of Faith ($US29.98 hardcover; $US24.98 softcover). A major source for 17th century Church history and a totally unique compilation -- peering into the very heart of Reformation! "Baillie was a keen Resolutioner, but lived to see his mistake. To this he refers in the last of his Letters, 'We are in the most hard taking we have seen at any time. It is the matter of my daily grief, and I think it has brought all my trouble on me, and I fear it shall do me more harm.' The work is of immense historical value" (Johnston, The Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 312). Cunningham is also cited by Johnston regarding this work, "His Letter and Journals furnish us with some pictures, as lifelike as photographs, of the principal actors then on the stage of affairs, and not unfrequently gives us a peep of what was passing behind the scenes. It is the book of all others to be read by those who would understand the period of the Covenant." About 1700 pages.

BAILLIE, ROBERT

Satan the Leader in chief to all who resist the Reparation of Sion (1643)
In this "sermon to the Honourable House of Commons, at their late solemn Fast, Febr. 28, 1643," Baillie promotes the idea that the church must be reformed before the state. At one point he comments, "The ordering of the State and Kingdom, how necessary soever, ought not to precede the settling of the Church. In this, the interest of God, in that, the interest of man is chiefest: If any could be so impious as to avow their postponing of God to the world, yet they would do well to be so wise as not to marre their own ends, by the mis-order of the proceedings. Except the Lord build the house of a Kingdom, the industry of the wisest men is for little purpose. And how shall the Lord concurre with men in building their state, when men are so careless of his Honour and Service, as not to build his Church? Nehemiah laid not a stone in the wall of the City, until Zerubbabel had set the Cap-stone on the wall of the temple." 62 pages.

Volume one covers the period from the beginning of the French Reformation to the Edict of January, 1562. Volume two takes in the period from the battle of Coutras to the death of Henry the Fourth (1610). The author notes that

the period of about half a century with which these volumes are concerned may properly be regarded as the formative age of the Huguenots in France. It included the first planting of the reformed doctrines, and the steady growth of the Reformation in spite of obloquy and persecution, whether exercised under the forms of law or vented in lawless violence. It was the gathering and the regular organization of the reformed communities, as well as their consolidation into one of the most orderly and zealous churches of the Protestant family.

The author has made use of manuscripts "previously known to few scholars -- if at all." 1127 pages, including an extensive 26 page index covering both volumes.

BALFOUR, WILLIAM

The Establishment Principle Defended (1873)
"The principle of Church Establishments, properly understood... is just the principle of national religion. It has many ramifications all springing from an acknowledgement of the universal supremacy of Christ, and bearing upon the duty of nations and their rulers to promote the advancement of true religion, and the prosperity of Christ's cause and kingdom. It is connected with the protection of the Sabbath... (it) assumes that nations are moral and responsible creatures, accountable to God in their corporate capacity, and the proper subjects of rewards and punishments. It implies that wherever God's Word exists, its existence and influence ought to be nationally acknowledged as the only supreme authority and the fountain of law... All this is very powerfully expounded and enforced in this volume" (James Begg from the Preface). In short, this book shows how civil powers are to acknowledge Christ as King, and to civilly sanction all those who publicly promote Satan's kingdom (whether by cries of equality, neutrality, or toleration of lies, deception, heresy or idolatry).
