Full SWRB CD comment from Dr. McMahon:

"I have been systematically working through reading the Puritan and Reformed CDs I purchased.

I must say, there is nothing like them available anywhere.

It is the most amazing collection of works I know of in one package to date.

In my opinion, it far surpasses Ages Software and their collections.*

The Puritan and Reformed material presented on these CDs is exceptional.

I am continually amazed at the depth and breadth of information in both collections, and the rarity of works that I now have at my fingertips.

You have done an immeasurable service for the Kingdom of Christ in making these CDs available, and every pastor and theologian should own them without question (they would be foolhardy to pass them by)."

* It is SWRB's opinion that Ages has done an excellent job in making various Reformed works available on CD, so much so that we also distribute a number of their CDs at discounts. Thus, please don't make more out of our publishing this comment than is warranted, as this is a comment we received from one of our customers and it expresses his opinion. As for Ages' work, we rejoice whenever the truth is published, whether through others or through SWRB (as we play only a very small part in the revival of classic Reformation, Puritan and Covenanter thought that is now taking place worldwide through God's marvelous grace). The publication of the best Reformers and Puritans of the past is one of the greatest needs of our time, as this extends the blessings that come through faithful preachers and authors into our day and into the future. Lord willing, the growth in the publishing of faithful works from the past will help stem the tide of the great declension and unfaithfulness which we are now witnessing all around us, even (sadly) among many churches that still call themselves "Presbyterian" and/or "Reformed." So please pray together with us that our Lord will multiple the number of faithful publishers and publications, and that He will give many the heart to stand for the truth no matter the consequences (as He has done for our faithful forefathers, who resisted Satan and sin unto blood and even to martyrdom in many cases). -- RB.

"SWRB's Puritan and Reformation CD libraries are an invaluable source for the study of the history and theology of classic Reformation theology. The collection is remarkable not only for depth of content, but also for the rarity of many of the works. Most seminary libraries will not have even a percentage of the works available on these CD-ROMs. I cannot imagine anyone working in Reformation / historical theology that would not want to use the Puritan and Reformed libraries!"

"I just received your CD collection. One bit of advice: you should instruct your customers to take about 1 week off just to peruse the tables of contents for these CD's, followed by another week off, in order to recover from the state of shock in which they will find themselves.

In all seriousness, this collection is almost impossible to describe. It has to be seen to be believed. As a pastor, my library has just increased dramatically. As a Ph.D. student in Puritan and Post-Reformation studies, I have immediate access to many of the same works for which I would normally need to access through rare book rooms of theological libraries.

Thank you for this labor of love. Thank you for making it accessible, both financially and technologically. May the Lord richly bless you for this service to his people."

- Yours for the faith,
Pastor David Owen Filson

"You all are doing a wonderful service by making all these materials so readily available. Having them on my hard drive is BETTER than having access to a rare book library with all of them in hand... I have found the CD set invaluable as a tool of scholarship. So once again I commend you brothers for making it available."

- Dr. E. Calvin Beisner

Examining Contemporary Revivalism, as well as other books, scholarly papers, and contributions to various anthologies).

"It's been several weeks now since I received the CDs and have had some time to digest some of them. All I can say is, "WOW!" This is truly a library like no other, and has already paid great dividends not only in my own personal worship and study, but in my teaching as well. I first balked at the price, but after seeing the vastness of the material, I almost feel as though I'm robbing you!

I pray that the Lord will allow you to get these materials into the hands of as many ministers as possible."

Full SWRB CD comment from Dr. Moore:

This collection of 62 CDs is a truly astounding accomplishment. There is nothing like this available to the ordinary Christian on the whole face of the earth.

Now, for the first time ever, ordinary Christians can have direct and near effortless access to the very cream of Puritan and Reformed, as well as Covenanter, literature.

These books are often in fascinating first editions and many are electronically linked and indexed for the first time. The ordinary Christian may here dig into a simply staggering wealth of literature, from devotional and sermonic material to technical and scholarly works. Even in the days of the Long Reformation itself ordinary Christians didn't get to see this kind of library -- most couldn't read for a start, and even those who could, would never have been able to afford to buy even a hundredth part of the material on these CDs. Truly we are without excuse!

And the significance of this collection goes even beyond that. No longer do we have to wait for modern Reformed publishing houses to predict that a particular Reformation or Puritan book will be sufficiently popular to make it economical to reprint, or to deem it "safe" enough to be let loose on the modern evangelical church. Rather, we are now able to see for ourselves the whole range of the Puritan and Reformed publishing enterprise, including views that are usually suppressed by most modern devotees of "Puritan" piety!

Buy these CDs while you can, and find out for yourself what the First and Second Reformations were really all about! You'll be truly amazed, and, by God's grace, will grow from being an ordinary Christian to being an extraordinary one. What they used to say of the Puritan John Flavel's preaching, can be said of these CDs: they are "hissing hot"!

- Dr Jonathan D. Moore, Cambridge, UK.
(Scholar of 16th and 17th century Calvinistic literature.)

"This side of eternity I'll never be able to repay the favor you have done mankind by bringing these... CDs together.

The first week of reading I grew more as a Christian reading those rich, pure Gospel Commentators than I have in 18 years of Christian life. After reading some of the Puritan CDs I have to get the Reformation set if it kills me. A fire is burning within me. These... CDs are liable to start a revival fire unseen in any generation... the Gospel in its pure form is seen in these... CDs.

Sir, I cant say enough. What a treasure! I'll never be able to repay you this side of heaven, but when we get there I am sure you will see the rich fruits of your labor. God bless you for not being money hungry but wanting to see Christians grow in the Lord... I love you even though we have never met, you have helped me in my Christian walk tremendously with these... CDs.

I am not bragging on the flesh, I am just giving honor where honor is due. The Holy Ghost will take these CDs and light a fire unseen and unheard of. God bless you all at Still Waters."

"Thank you so very much for the CDs.

I am amazed at the quality and quantity of the literature...

I cannot imagine any other single thing being done by any man or group of men in the earth today that is of such extensive, present, and enduring value as this CD work is.

God be praised that he uses sickly and weak men to forward his kingdom, that the work may not be mistaken to be wrought by the might of men, but by his Spirit. His strength is perfected in weakness."

MACHEN, J. GRESHAM

New Testament Greek for Beginners (1923)

A standard text for learning Greek. "This textbook is intended primarily for students who are beginning the study of the Greek Testament either without any previous acquaintance with the Greek language or with an acquaintance so imperfect that a renewed course of elementary instruction is needed... The New Testament usage will here be presented without any reference to Attic Prose... The book is an instruction book, and not a descriptive grammar. Since it is an instruction book, everything in it is made subservient to the imparting of a reading acquaintance with the language... The effort is made here to enter upon these explanations which the fifteen years' experience of the author in teaching New Testament Greek has shown to be essential... The vocabularies have been limited to words which are very common in the New Testament..." (Preface). Indexed, 299 pages.

MACKENZIE, ROBERT

John Brown of Haddington (1918)

This book of 320 pages covers the life of one of the most important Scottish Presbyterian ministers of the eighteenth century, John Brown of Haddington. He was born in 1722, and by the age of thirteen he was an orphan, living in poverty. He became a herd-boy, watching sheep to earn his living. However, he had a deep interest in the things of God, and set out to educate himself in the original languages of the Bible. He taught himself Greek, and then went to a book shop to buy a Greek New Testament. The bookseller said he didn't think Brown could read it, and some University professors who were in the shop asked Brown about himself. "Then one of them, not unlikely Francis Pringle, then Professor of Greek, asked the bookseller to bring a Greek New Testament, and, throwing it down on the counter, said, 'Boy, if you can read that book, you shall have it for nothing.' He took it up eagerly, read a passage to the astonishment of those in the shop, and marched out with his gift, so worthily won, in triumph" (pp. 34-35).

Brown was able to teach himself not only Greek, but Latin and Hebrew as well. Some young men in the vicinity who were studying for the ministry became jealous of this poor herd-boy who had little formal education but was so advanced in the study of languages. Thus a rumour was spread that John Brown had received his knowledge of the languages from Satan himself! This rumour spread, and stuck with him for years to come, causing him much anguish. (Interestingly, one of the fellows who helped spread this slander was a licentiate who was found guilty of unworthy conduct and deprived of his licence to preach about the same time that Brown himself was licensed).

Brown subsequently became a pedlar, and then a soldier fighting against "the Pretender," Prince Charles Stuart, who unsuccessfully tried to achieve power with the support of Highland troops. Subsequent to that brief war, Brown became a schoolmaster, and finally a divinity student in the Secession church. After successful completion of his studies, he was called to be a pastor in the town of Haddington. It was there that he spent much of his time writing the books for which he became famous.

Among his better known works are The Self-Interpreting Bible, The Christian Journal, A Dictionary of the Holy Bible, A General History of the Christian Church, The Psalms of David in Metre (his notes on the Psalms), The Absurdity and Perfidy of all Authoritative Toleration of Gross Heresy, Blasphemy, Idolatry, and Popery in Britain (including his defense of the continuing obligation of the Solemn League and Covenant), and The Harmony of Scripture Prophecies

Brown was a stalwart for many important points of Biblical truth in his day, but his work is of more value today than ever before. Read this book to be encouraged about how God can take a poor, uneducated farm boy, and make him into one of the great spiritual leaders of his day.

MACLEAN, WILLIAM

Arminianism: Another Gospel - Wesley, Moody, Billy Graham, Refuted. Quotes By Calvin, Spurgeon, Edwards, Owen, Rutherford, Hodge, et al.

Spurgeon: "Free will has carried many souls to hell but never a soul to heaven."

A Jesuit: "Now we have planted the Sovereign Drug Arminianism, OUR FOUNDATION IS ARMINIANISM."

Rous: "Arminianism is the very essence of Popery."

Toplady: "The charge on which many of the Protestant martyrs were burnt at the stake was that they held to the doctrine of predestination and rejected the Arminian and Popish doctrine of free-will."

"It is often alleged that Arminianism and Calvinism only differ in that the former chiefly stresses man's responsibility and the latter lays all the weight upon Divine Sovereignty. This is not correct. The Arminian does stress man's responsibility to the exclusion of the sovereignty of God, and this is a fruitful cause of more than one error. The man, on the other hand, who stresses the sovereignty of God to the exclusion of man's responsibility is a hyper-Calvinist and is in error on this aspect of truth just as surely as the Arminian. The true Calvinist lays stress on both doctrines as they are unfolded in the inspired and infallible Word of God" (Foreword).

"All the sects which have sprung up in these latter times… Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, Pentecostalists, Mormons, Christadelphians, Cooneyites, etc., have all in common, the fatal lie of free willism. It is Satan's sovereign drug, which causes the soul to sleep in delusion, & the end of such delusion is death."

MACPHERSON, HECTOR

The Cameronian Philosopher: Alexander Shields
The preface notes, "Much literature has been called forth by the Covenanting movement in Scotland, and my sole reason for adding another volume to the library of Covenanting history and biography is that one of the greatest of the Covenanting leaders has been allowed to sink into a quite unmerited oblivion. Alexander Shields, who was after the execution of James Renwick the acknowledged leader of the Cameronian remnant, was one of the most picturesque figures in the Scotland of his day... he lived dangerously and died young; and it is indeed strange that no biography of this remarkable man has yet been attempted... He was a man of thought, and he may with some justice be called 'the Cameronian philosopher,' for in his greatest work, 'A Hind Let Loose,' he expounded... the philosophy of what might be called Radical Calvinism... He is worthy to rank with Buchanan and Rutherford among the chief Scottish protagonists" concerning Calvinistic political theory. Though MacPherson is exceedingly weak in expressing some points of the hard-edged Cameronianism of Shields the book is still useful for much of the information that it contains. It also helps set the context for Shield's masterful and revolutionary work A Hind Let Loose
(available through SWRB for $39.99) a book easily in the class of Rutherford's famous Lex Rex ($29.95).

MACPHERSON, HECTOR

The Jesuits in History

Paisley calls the Jesuit's the "Gestapo of Rome." This easy-reading, 149 page book will show you why. MaCpherson maintains that every nation that allows Jesuitism on its soil "will one day pay a heavy penalty." Moreover, he writes that "if we are to escape the penalty, we must come to realize that a system which enslaves the individual, fosters superstition, is at war with patriotism and destroys morality, will, if allowed to flourish unchecked, sooner or later destroy society."

MANTON, THOMAS

All Things Work For Good ($7.96, 2 cassettes) Read by Elder Lyndon Dohms. Many popular misconceptions surround Romans 8:28: "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose" -- and Manton explodes them all in classic Puritan style. He shows that sin does not do good as sin, but as it is repented of. He gives many reasons why the word "all" in Romans 8:28 must be limited by the analogy of faith (as Calvinists rightly limit the word "all" in regard to soteriology when it is warranted -- or as when a conductor shouts "all aboard," but only lets those who have tickets on the train). Furthermore, Manton deals with the misuse of providence and shows why suffering is good for those who are soft-hearted (or who are softened by it); but he also notes how suffering can be a curse to those who harden their hearts in such situations. He speaks of pleasure as "the great sorcerer enchanting mankind" and shows why God gives some over to their lusts. At one point he counters the reprobate's view of the problem of evil, answering the question "If there is an all-powerful God how is there evil?" with "If there is no God how is there good?" There is much to ponder and meditate upon in these notably outstanding and practical sermons taken from Manton's Works (Sermon 37). Though this review may seem to dwell on the polemical value of this work, Manton's preaching always has much which all the lovers of the Lord Jesus Christ will find very heartening and encouraging.

MANTON, THOMAS

The Complete Works of Thomas Manton

(22 Volumes)

Manton was "one of the most eminent of the Nonconformist divines." He was born in 1620 and died in 1677. He was chosen to write "The Epistle to the Reader: Especially Heads of Families" of the famous Westminster standards. "Received episcopal institution in 1661. Resigned in 1662, on account of the Act of Uniformity (which among other wicked, Satanic enactments, its principal terms required a "declaration of 'unfeigned assent and consent' to everything contained in the Book of Common Prayer, re-ordination for those not episcopally ordained" and, most evil of all, "a renunciation of the Solemn League and Covenant. Knowing that the Puritans would not submit to such terms, the Authorities framed the Act to secure their expulsion" cf. Sermons of the Great Ejection by Iain Murray [Banner of Truth, reprinted 1962]). He was a man of great learning and extensive reading, of a sound judgement, and had the art of reducing volumes of divinity into a narrow compass. According to Charnock, he was the best collector of sense of the age. Dr. Bates says, 'A clear judgement, rich fancy, strong memory, and happy elocution, met in him, and were excellently improved by diligent study'" (James Darling, Cyclopaedia Bibliographica, 1854, pp. 1953-1954). Includes Manton's better-known volumes, such as his commentary on James and Jude and his Sermons on Psalm 119, as well as a host of other practical preaching, teaching and Scriptural exposition. The 22nd volume contains two large indices (by subject and text). A full list of everything included in this massive set is at: http://www.swrb.com/catalog/M.htm .

C.H. Spurgeon wrote of this set,

"While commenting upon the One Hundred and Nineteenth Psalm, I was brought into most intimate communion with Thomas Manton, who has discoursed upon that marvellous portion of Scripture with great fulness and power. I have come to know him so well that I could choose him out from among a thousand divines if he were again to put on his portly form, and display among modern men that countenance wherein was a 'great mixture of majesty and meekness.' His works occupy twenty-two volumes in the modern reprint: a mighty mountain of sound theology. They mostly consist of sermons; but what sermons! For solid, sensible instruction forcibly delivered, they cannot be surpassed. Manton is not brilliant, but he is always clear; he is not oratorical, but he is powerful; he is not striking, but he is deep. There is not a poor discourse in the whole collection: he is evenly good, constantly excellent. Ministers who do not know Manton need not wonder if they are themselves unknown." -

- J.C. Ryle, from the Introduction, also stated,

"It only remains for me to express my earnest hope that this new edition of Manton's works may prove acceptable to the public, and meet with many purchasers and readers. If any one wants to buy a good specimen of a Puritan divine, my advice unhesitatingly is, ' Let him buy Manton.'

"These sermons are the legacy of a powerful preacher devoted to the systematic teaching and application of God's Word. Whether he is expounding the Lord's Prayer, Psalm 119, Isaiah 53, James, or Jude, Manton presents us with the best that English Puritans had to offer in careful, solid, warmhearted exposition of the Scriptures." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke

"This valuable set of Puritan writings only becomes available once every few decades when an adventuresome publisher decides to invest a great deal of time and money to offer this gift to Christ's church. It has only been reprinted twice in the last 150 years, not counting the current edition. Do not fail to obtain a copy of this set, and think of giving one to your pastor as an act of gratitude for his faithfulness." - Dr. Don Kistler

Thomas Manton's complete 22 volume set of Works is also available on Reformation Bookshelf CDs volume 4 and 5 (for just $29.95 US funds each, until July 28, 2008!) at:
