BARROW, GREG (on behalf of the Session of the Puritan Reformed Church of Edmonton)

A Reformation Discussion of Extraordinary Predictive Prophecy Subsequent to the Closing of the Canon of Scripture (1998)

"The following document is a response to questions raised by Mike Wagner (a member of the Puritan Reformed Church of Edmonton) regarding the position of the Puritan Reformed Church of Edmonton on the subject of extraordinary predictive prophecy subsequent to the closing of the canon of Scripture. This is not intended to be an exhaustive treatment of the subject, but simply a response to specific questions asked. Though this was not initially intended for public distribution, we have received requests that it be made available to a wider audience. It is hoped that this summary of our position will aid the Church of Christ by encouraging further study of this difficult subject" (Introductory paragraph).

This book (of 28 pages) clearly demonstrates that many major Reformers (and even the early church fathers) were not strict cessationists, nor were they "Charismatics." It shows how extraordinary predictive prophecy was practiced during both Reformations and how the Reformers justified this from Scripture. Proof for this continuing practice (and the parameters laid out in Scripture) is provided from the teaching and practice of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland (from the Second Book of Discipline), John Knox, Samuel Rutherford, George Gillespie, James Durham, David Steele, John Calvin, Martin Luther, Thomas Goodwin, Justin Martyr and a host of others. Notice, for example, the following comment by George Gillespie,

I must say it, to the glory of God, there were in the church of Scotland, both in the time of our first reformation, and after the reformation, such extraordinary men as were more than ordinary pastors and teachers, even holy prophets receiving extraordinary revelations from God, and foretelling diverse strange and remarkable things, which did accordingly come to pass punctually, to the great admiration of all who knew the particulars. Such were Mr. Wishart the martyr, Mr. Knox the reformer, also Mr. John Welsh, Mr. John Davidson, Mr. Robert Bruce, Mr. Alexander Simpson, Mr. Fergusson, and others. It were too long to make a narrative here of all such particulars, and there are so many of them stupendous, that to give instance in some few, might seem to derogate from the rest, but if God give me opportunity, I shall think it worth the while to make a collection of these things (George Gillespie, "Miscellany Questions," in The Works of George Gillespie Vol. 2, Chapter 5, section 7, p. 30).

The following eight questions are answered herein:

Question #1 -- What is the difference between the theological position on prophecy (extra biblical revelation) of the above mentioned men of God and the present day charismatics?

Question #2 -- What is the explicit Scriptural teaching that underlies and justifies what those men of God did? Why should I believe that extra--biblical revelation can still occur?

Question #3 -- Is the cessationist position basically correct with extraordinary exceptions, or is the cessationist position a theological error that should be repudiated?

Question #4 -- Is it permissible for church officers to receive extra-biblical revelation that will guide them in the direction of church affairs?

Question # 5 -- Is it permissible for members of our congregations to claim to receive extra--biblical communications from God about future events and to claim to be prophets?

Question #6 -- How would someone know that he has received extra--biblical communication from God rather than having simply deceived himself?

Question #7 -- How would I know that someone claiming to get extra--biblical revelations from God is actually getting such revelations from God.

Question #8 -- What is the difference between mysticism and genuine spiritual experience?

BEHE, MICHAEL J.

Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution (1996)
Berlinski writes of this work, "Mike Behe... makes an overwhelming case against Darwin on the biochemical level. No one has done this before. It is an argument of great originality, elegance, and intellectual power. For readers who have been persuaded that biologists have long since demonstrated the validity of Darwinian theory, [Behe's] observations are apt to be a source of astonishment" (back cover). This book is a crushing blow to the demonically inspired myth of evolution! It may well be unanswerable. It demonstrates, in a most interesting manner, how science (with the help of new technologies) is slowly reaching general conclusions
about origins (concerning man, the earth, the universe, etc.) that have been common among those fearing God since just after the beginning of time. At one point (cf. "Ghostbusters", p. 243ff.), while disposing of the myth of neutrality among scientists, Behe relates how Einstein "inserted a 'correction factor' into his equations solely to make them predict a stationary, eternal universe" (i.e. a universe with no beginning, p. 244). Einstein's earlier formulation of the general theory of relativity pointed to an unstable universe -- which astronomer Edwin Hubble shortly thereafter observed in the movement of stars away from the earth -- and this thought repulsed Einstein because of its implications in regard to matter and creation. Though quite technical at times, this book is purposely written with the non-scientist in mind. It is also filled with a number of diagrams which are aimed at helping the reader grasp the astounding complexity, interrelatedness and beauty of God's creation. Furthermore, it is clearly demonstrated throughout this work how the very complexity and interrelatedness of the creation makes it impossible (at the microscopic biochemical level) for evolution to be true. The lack of answers to the specific problems in evolutionary theory raised in this book speaks volumes as to the various contradictions that unbelief (in whatever area) always leads to. "He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision" (Ps. 2:4). Behe is Professor of Biochemistry at Lehigh University. 307 pages.

BURGON, JOHN

The Last Twelve Verses of Mark Vindicated Against Recent Critical Objectors and Established -- The Fatal Blow to Manuscripts "B' and Aleph" (1871)
This book "amassed overwhelming evidence from manuscripts, lectionaries, ancient versions, and church fathers proving the genuineness of the the last twelve verses of Mark... A thorough grasp of Burgon's methodology of textual criticism such as is exhibited in these pages will convince the honest reader to reject the false conclusions regarding these twelve verses (and other verses as well) which have been accepted by the NASV, the NIV, the RSV, the NRSV, the NEB, TEV, CEV, and the other modern versions! ... The manuscripts, the lectionaries, the ancient versions, and the quotations from the Church Fathers all unite to show that Mark 16:9-20 was in Mark's Gospel from the very beginning!" CREATION VIDEO

Biological Evidence of Creation "From a Frog to a Prince" (1998)
"Compelling new evidence that life on earth could not have been created by random forces... A kiss from a princess can't turn a frog into a prince, yet evolutionists claim that ancestral amphibians did change into people just by chance and natural selection. But such major biological change needs new information: where could it come from? At Oxford University, a prominent defender of Darwinian evolution, Dr. Richard Dawkins, says the selective accumulation of lucky mutations can explain it. This view is challenged by biophysicist Dr. Lee Spetner in Israel, and by molecular biologist Dr. Michael Denton in New Zealand. Dr. Michael Gitt, and information scientist, explains that evolutionary process cannot produce new information. And in Australia, biologist Dr. Don Batten shows there are clear limits to biological change; frogs will always breed frogs" (from outside video case). A colorful, professionally produced video.

DABNEY, ROBERT LEWIS

Discussions of Robert Lewis Dabney (3 volumes, 1891)
Warfield called Dabney "the most conspicuous figure and the leading theological guide of the Southern Presbyterian Church, the most prolific theological writer that Church has as yet produced." These three volumes of articles and essays vindicate Warfield's statement. "This is not a book to be read and returned to the library shelf," states the well known Baptist minister Al Martin, "rather, as I have found to my own profit, it ought to be read, digested, and kept close at hand as a guide, companion and constant prod to us." Dr. Archibald Alexander called Dabney, "the best teacher of theology in the United States, if not the world." Freundt notes, "Dabney championed the doctrines of Calvinism and applied them consistently and practically to the great issues of his times." Indexed, 1901 pages.

EDWARDS, BRIAN

God's Outlaw: The Story of William Tyndale and the English Bible (1976, third impression 1996)
This biography... is set in the colorful and cruel days of Henry VIII when men were burned, racked and maimed for lesser crimes than that of smuggling the Bible into England. When William Tyndale set out to provide the first printed New Testament in English he was forced to do so in defiance of the king, pope, and almost every person in authority. Compelled to flee from his homeland, he continued with his work of translating the Scriptures whilst slipping from city to city in Germany, Holland and Belgium in an attempt to avoid the agents who were sent from England to arrest him. His story is one of poverty, danger and ceaseless labor" (back cover). Tyndale was ultimately martyred due to opposition from the emissaries of the civil and ecclesiastical beasts -- a collection of cruel antichristian monsters that opposed themselves and the Gospel in Tyndale's day. Among the many charges that led to his death (because he translated the Bible into English) we find included: denying the free will of man (a foundational tenet of popery, cf. Martin Luther's Bondage of the Will
and all the Reformed Confessions); maintaining that faith (in Christ) alone justifies the sinner; denying purgatory exists, etc. Tyndale's original translation of the New Testament is one of the six early English translations once again available in the English Hexapla ($99.00 P, $149.00 HP), which Still Waters Revival Books has recently reprinted.185 pages.

GILLESPIE, GEORGE

Ezekiel's Vision of Millennial Glory, Preparation for Coming Reformation and a Remedy for Backsliding and Lukewarmness
This sermon, read by elder Lyndon Dohms (1998), was originally preached to England's House of Commons "At Their Late Solemn Fast, Wednesday, March 27, 1644." It is taken from volume one of Gillespie's two volume Works
($29.99 P, $65.00 HP). It gives great insight into the covenanted unity, uniformity and worldwide Reformation sought by the majority of the Westminster Divines and the best of the civil leaders of Gillespie's day. Gillespie searchingly deals with the individual, the church and the state, while painting a Scriptural picture of prophesied earthly victory (Isa. 2:2-5, Ezek 47:1-12, etc.) -- in classic historicist postmillennial style -- which is sure to stir even the coldest Christian heart. He shows how the worst disease the land can suffer is corruption in religion (particularly as exhibited in false worship), rebukes those opposing the Solemn League and Covenant and calls upon all to maintain (and even improve upon) the Reformation attainments "whereunto we have already attained" (Phil. 3:16). It is also interesting to note, especially since this sermon was preached before civil rulers, that though Gillespie points out the need for humility, repentance, prayer, tears, godly affections, sanctified minds and honorable actions, he does not forget to mention the importance of a covenanted army in this great cause of Christ's covenanted Reformation. Also noted is the destruction of Antichrist, the calling and conversion of the Jews (Rom. 11), the two witnesses and the 1260 year apostasy. Gillespie closes with an appeal to the English House of Commons, with whom the Scots had "joined in covenant and in arms," to be faithful "according to the word he (God--RB) hath covenanted with you (i.e. in the Solemn League and Covenant--RB), so his spirit remaineth among you" -- exhorting these magistrates to "fear not" but to "be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might." This is classic Covenanter preaching, among the best sermons you may ever hear!

I John 5:16-17 (#26) What Is the Sin Unto Death (1998)
A serious sermon on a sobering topic. Answers the question as to what it means to blaspheme the Holy Spirit (Mark 3:28-29). Shows who it is that can commit this sin -- thus placing themselves among the living damned -- "But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness" (Mark 3:29). Distinguishes between this horrid and damning sin and those sins which can be forgiven. Explains how this relates to prayer. Also exposes some of the errors of Romanism, Arminianism and Antinomianism, especially in regard to their views of sin and sanctification.

I John 5:18-21 (#27) Keep Yourselves From Idols (1998)
Being the final sermon in the I John series, Price gives a nice concise summary of the most important points in the whole book. Focusing, as the Apostle John himself did in summarizing the book, on: "Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen" (1 John 5:21), Price lays the axe to the root of the tree of sin. He also encourages practical holiness, the love of the truth and (above all) the love of God -- in those whom Christ has called. The place of secret worship, family worship and corporate worship in the life of the believer is also dealt with. Comments on Mysticism, the Gnostics, Relativism, Skepticism and much more is also included.

Antichrist and His Emissaries Unmasked and Rebuked (1998)
A thundering example of Reformation preaching firing the gospel gun into the vitals of ecclesiastical Antichrist. In enumerating the characteristics of unfaithful ministers (from Scripture) Price
unmasks the Pope ("that Antichrist, that man of sin and son of perdition, that exalteth himself in the Church against Christ, and all that is called God," WCF 25:6) and Billy Graham as prime examples of deception and unfaithfulness in the visible church (as to essence) today. He points out how Arminianism in doctrine and worship (as well as a host of other sins) are exemplified in these two public figures (as well as in the Romish harlot [who rides the civil beast, Rev. 17-18] in general, along with her harlot daughters [the backsliding "Protestant" churches]). One example of egregious apostasy is seen in the fact that Billy Graham sends his "converts" into liberal churches (which deny the inspiration of Scripture), into that "masterpiece of Satan" (Cunningham) the Roman Catholic church, and even into to Jewish Synagogues (which deny Christ was the promised Messiah). This should not be surprising, given Graham's recent public comments to fellow deceiver Robert Schuller, that Muslims, Buddhists, and "non-believers" alike can be members of "the body of Christ" even thought they "may not even know the name of Jesus, but they know in their hearts that they need something" (Battle Cry, March/April 1998, Canadian Edition, p. 1.). Moreover, this forms another example of how Graham is committing spiritual adultery with the Romish harlot, for as the Battle Cry also notes concerning Graham's heretical statement above: "this statement directly agrees with the Roman Catholic universal catechism, page 224, para. 847: 'Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience, those too may achieve eternal salvation (by these works--RB)'". As all Bible believers know, both of these comments (by Rome and Billy Graham) fly into the teeth of the words of the Lord Jesus Christ, when He said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" (John 14:6). Price also defends the right and duty of private judgement from Scripture (and the writings of the Reformers), while proclaiming the necessity of separation from unfaithful ministers and ministries (with help from George Gillespie, Samuel Rutherford and James Renwick). "Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them" (Rom. 16:17). If there is a message that the church needs to hear today (if we are ever to see real Reformation) this is it! The Apostolic/Reformation Way to Worldwide (Biblical) Church Unity (7 sermons, 1998)
7 astounding sermons on God's biblically ordained method to fulfill His command for unity (and the great commission) in the visible church: 1. What Are Terms of Communion? (2 cassettes); 2. What is Close Communion? (2 cassettes); 3. What is Occasion Hearing (or Occasional Communion)? (3 cassettes). These truths which have been prominent from Old Testament times to the days of the Apostles -- and in all great subsequent Reformations and true revivals (especially during the second Reformation) -- are clearly, simply and Scripturally presented. These forgotten or ignored doctrines are once again coming to public notice in the preaching of Greg Price (and the publishing of classic Covenanter literature), as well as in the contemporary call for a third Reformation in which the nations of the earth will once again enter into (or renew) covenant with Christ. As Price points out from Scripture, these truths will also be well known in the days of millennial glory to come. "And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one (visibly--RB)" (Zech. 14:9). These sermons give us a foretaste of the blessings that God will pour out upon His church when she runs "the way of thy commandments" (Ps. 119:32) and when "the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea" (Isa. 11:9)!

Covenant Theology and Its Implications (1998)
An easy-to-understand introduction to the basics of covenant theology. Explains what covenant theology is, while adducing a number of practical and theological implications which must follow when this view of Scripture is adopted. Shows how covenant theology is (and was) foundational to all true Reformation. Refutes Dispensationalism. Includes overviews (with Scripture proofs) of the covenant of Redemption, the covenant of Works and the covenant of Grace. In short, Price proclaims the classic Reformed position on covenants (and the implications of covenant theology) as it has been declared in the best Reformed Confessions (e.g. The Westminster Confession of Faith
) and in books like The Marrow of Modern Divinity (by Fisher and Boston), The Covenant of Life Opened (by Samuel Rutherford), The Ark of the Covenant Opened and The Ark of the Testament Opened by Patrick Gillespie and The Life of Justification Opened (by John Brown of Wamphray). This is the best single tape sermon on covenant theology that we have knowledge of.

Micah 1:1-7 (#1) Corrupt Worship and God's Anger With the Church and the Nations (1998)
An amazing sermon! One of the best we have ever carried! If you love Reformed thought, you will love this sermon. Here Price covers not only the text (Micah 1:1-7), but also provides introductory and background information applicable to the whole book of Micah (with much "prophetic" urgency). He outlines the major causes of God's wrath against both Israel and Judah in Micah's day, explains why such sins bring God's judgment on individuals, churches and nations, and then makes
application to our day. He demonstrates how God's judgment is already upon our nations (as seen in abortion, divisions in the church, divorce, idolatry, homosexuality [and the public toleration of sodomites], false doctrine, godless civil and ecclesiastical leaders, pornography, godless public education, false worship, drug abuse, covenant breaking, Islam, natural disasters, Sabbath breaking, the ungodly use of technology [TV, movies, radio, etc.] and its toleration, man-made [Roman Catholic] holy-days, blasphemous and wicked music, pluralism, ignorance of daily secret and family worship, egalitarianism, ignorance of the regulative principle of worship, feminism, communism, the resurgence of Romanism [and the other limbs of antichrist], etc.) -- and how the cup of God's wrath will continue to fill, barring true repentance. As in Micah's day, idolatry (i.e. putting the will and work of man in the place of the will and work of God) is shown to be the root sin from which all other sins proceed. Furthermore, idolatry is also shown to be the sin which (throughout the Old Testament) brought some of the most severe judgments from God against the spiritually adulterous covenant people -- though Price is careful to biblically balance God's judgment with His glorious mercy. Preaching like this reminds one of what is contained in the sermons of Calvin or some of the old Covenanters, when they dealt with the Old Testament prophets and God's wrath against His backsliding people. And yet, as with the old Reformers, Christ is exalted and His gracious offers of salvation shine like a beacon amidst the loving admonitions and threats of coming judgment upon those who continue in their spiritual whoredom.

Micah 1:8-16 (#2) Mercy in God's Judgment (1998)
While noting how God's judgments in history often drive His people closer to Him (teaching us lessons about holiness that we would otherwise miss), Price also shows how God delights in mercy -- demonstrating that He takes "no pleasure in the death of the wicked" (Ezek. 33:11). This sermon also teaches us how to respond to signs of God's judgment and encourages prayer, fasting, secret worship, family worship and inward faithfulness and communion with Christ. Levity, lightness and the desire for popular acceptance in preaching is also denounced as a sign of defection and backsliding -- as Price illustrates in the following quote which he cites from an English minister in 1656 (Richard Baxter, The Reformed Pastor
, pp. 119-120),

Of all preaching in the world . . . I hate that preaching which tends to make the hearers laugh, or to move their minds with tickling levity, and affect them as stage-plays used to do, instead of affecting them with a holy reverence of the name of God. Jerome says, "Teach in thy church, not to get the applause of the people, but to set in motion the groan; the tears of the hearers are thy praises.

Christ's free offer of salvation is also proclaimed in this message.

Micah 2:1-2 (#3) God Defends the Poor & Helpless (1998)
A classic example of how the Old Testament prophets spoke out against social injustice. Micah 2:3-13 (#4) The Goodness and Severity of God (1998)
Shows how and why God's judgments fall, what such calamities mean, what Christians can learn from these events and maladies, and how we are to respond to the dark dispensations that sometimes come from an almighty and sovereign Creator who works everything "according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself" (Eph. 1:9). Concludes that "all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose" (Rom. 8:28).

Micah 3:1-4 (#5) Biblical Civil Rule Expounded (With An Antidote Against Anti-Reformed Views of the Civil Magistrate) (1998)
Following in the footsteps of Samuel Rutherford, when he said, "Truth to Christ cannot be treason to Caesar" (Lex, Rex
), Price here demonstrates why Covenanters love lawful civil magistrates and why they can't own the authority of unlawful civil rulers. He also answers a number of questions on the Scriptural view of civil authority. What is a faithful civil magistrate? How do we recognize an unfaithful civil governor? Should a Christian vote in covenant breaking lands? How should we pray for lawful and unlawful civil rulers? Why should we distinguish between the office and the person in the office, and what does this mean? When should we consider an unjust ruler or government a tyrant and what should we do about tyranny? How does this relate to Reformation eschatology? Calvin, Rutherford, the Synod of Dort, the Westminster Confession of Faith, Diodati's Annotations, the Belgic Confession and many other Reformation standards and authors are cited to witness to the biblical position on civil rule. Objections against the biblical Reformation position are also answered, while Price shows the importance of faithful civil rulers to national and international Reformation.

Micah 3:5-8 (#6) Faithful and Unfaithful Ministry Contrasted 1/3 (1998)
Describes from Scripture the characteristics and beliefs that attend a faithful ministry (or that will be seen in a faithful minister). Shows how both faithful ministry and magistracy are integral to Reformation, as exemplified in the two witnesses (or two olive trees) of Scripture (Rev. 11:3,4). Gives examples of faithfulness from Calvin and from Andrew Melville (in his courageous rebuke to King James). Also demonstrates that classic Protestant position (cf. "Proof That the Church is Often Obscured" by Francis Turretin, http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualnls/ChuObsc.htm or pages 47-57 in Turretin's Institutes of Elenctic Theology
, volume 3) that truth is often in the minority, residing in a faithful and despised remnant (during the period of the great apostasy in which we now live) -- contrary to the lies of the Romish harlot concerning the splendor of the visible church. Every minister (and those aspiring to the ministry) should obtain this tape and the other two in this set -- as well as every Christian who prays for the peace and purity of Christ's church.

Shows how pragmatism, greed, idolatry (false worship, denial of the regulative principle, etc.), false unity, unscriptural toleration of error, etc., mark out the teaching and life of unfaithful ministers. The case of the Scottish ministers (of the second Reformation), who would not bow to persecution, but did cave in to the indulgences offered by the King, is given as an example of how Satan works to stumble ministers with pragmatic considerations of ease and worldly "success" -- anything to get them off a principled stand for the truth. Explains what kind of judgements those who are unfaithful can expect. Encouragement is also given to those who remain faithful.

What Are Terms of Communion? (1998)
Price shows how truth is more foundational than love and that
biblical love is always built on truth -- or else it is not the love which God commands (John 14:15-24). This sermon is based on 1 Cor. 1:10, "Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment." It covers the three-fold purpose for terms of communion, the biblical testimony for terms of communion and an appeal for terms of communion. We see here that all churches have terms of communion (whether explicit or implicit) and that these terms of communion justify each denominations' (or congregations') separate existence from other denominations or congregations. However, it is also pointed out that the present state of the visible church is in direct opposition to many of God commands for visible unity (based on truth). This is a grievous situation which stirs God to wrath and gives us an example of God's judgement upon the church. This sermon seeks to remove this cause of God's wrath by pressing the need for faithful obedience in regard to biblical unity (which will only be accomplished as the churches agree together on Scriptural terms of communion, Amos 3:3). Examples from Apostolic teaching and from the practice of the best Reformed churches of the past are used to emphasize the critical nature of this teaching. Interestingly, Price also shows (from Christ's high priestly prayer in John 17) that until the church comes to a visible unity (based on common, faithful terms of communion) the massive evangelism of Jews (Romans 11) and Gentiles (Ezek. 47) predicted in Scripture will not take place. This makes understanding and practising these truths of extreme importance -- while exposing much of the unbiblical evangelism that takes place today. If you love the purity and peace of Christ's church and/or long to see the masses of unevangelized humanity come to Christ, this is exactly the teaching that will help you to do your own part in bringing about this glorious end. This is the first sermon in the three tape series "The Apostolic/Reformation Way to Worldwide (Biblical) Church Unity."

RIDLEY, NICHOLAS

Works of Nicholas Ridley
Ridley was "an eminent reformer and Protestant martyr... Having concurred in the proclamation of Lady Jane Grey, he was committed to the Tower. Condemned to death for heresy and burnt in 1555" (Darling, Cyclopedia Bibliographica
, p. 2557). "Of all our English martyrs, ... Ridley has been esteemed by far the most learned... he learned to repeat, without book, almost all the epistles in Greek... The courage and zeal he manifested in promoting the (first English--RB) reformation was such, that he was considered, next to Cranmer, its greatest supporter amongst the clergy... the purity of his life corresponded with his knowledge... The reformation was greatly promoted by his learning, zeal, and active exertions while he lived, and perhaps more so by his death in its defence. In England, as everywhere else, the ancient observation has been verified, that the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church" (Thomas Smith, Select Memoirs of the Lives Labours, and Sufferings, of Those Pious and Learned English and Scottish Divines, p. 173 ff., 1828, [$19.99 P, $29.00 HP]). Along with a biographical notice, and among 16 other works, letters, and disputations, this book contains Ridley's "Brief Declaration or Treatise Against Transubstantiation" ("Ridley is allowed to have been master of that subject more than any man of his age," Smith, p. 175), his "Treatise Against Image Worship," and his "Conferences with Latimer." Printed from the 1843 Parker Society edition, indexed, 485 pages.

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL

The Excellence and Worth of the Gospel (c. 1640)
This sermon is read by elder Lyndon Dohms (1998) and taken from the book Quaint Sermons of Samuel Rutherford
($24.00 HP, $14.98 P). It proclaims the power of the gospel for pulling down all strongholds raised against it. It exhibits God's sovereignty while blasting the Arminian heresy and toppling its vaunted idol of "free will." It demonstrates how the gospel is a love letter from God to His elect and how the Lord's arrows always hit their mark (particular redemption, irresistible grace, etc.). Rutherford also delineates the marks by which one can be assured that a work of grace has been begun in the heart by God. Hypocrisy is also exposed in the most pointed manner. The place of the law and the gospel in salvation are given. True repentance is contrasted with false repentance, as is true assurance with false assurance, plus much more. A very practical sermon from one of the greatest preachers and theologians of all time, exhibiting why Rutherford is considered a protesting Covenanter of the first rank.

The Forlorn Son: Concluding Sermon
This sermon, the last in a series of seven (by Rutherford) on the prodigal son, is read by elder Lyndon Dohms (1998) and taken from the book Quaint Sermons of Samuel Rutherford
($24.00 HP, $14.98 P). Here Rutherford contrasts true gospel obedience with that which is false and hypocritical. While encouraging faithful covenanters to persevere -- no matter how hard the practical covenanted path or opposition to the way of truth becomes -- Rutherford also comments on the biblical way to handle the scorn that the world and hypocrites always heap upon those they call "separatists" and "puritans."

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL

Rutherford's Catechism Containing the Sum of Christian Religion
"From the beginning of his pastorate at Anwoth and throughout his ministry Rutherford was said to have been a keen catechist and it was probably during his time at Anworth that the following catechism was written, at least in part. Mitchell suggests that it would 'not be put into final shape until he went as a commissioner to the Westminster Assembly, and was engaged in suggesting materials for the Catechism of the Assembly,'" writes Dickson in the Preface. "From the time of his settlement in Anwoth, Rutherford is said to have given special attention to catechising, both in his household and in his parish. The tradition as to... Ussher having visited him in disguise, and submitted to be catechised among the members of his household on the Saturday evening, if well founded, must be assigned to this period of his ministry," notes Mitchell in his Catechisms of the Second Reformation
(which also contains a copy of Rutherford's Catechism, among many others, p. lxiv). Furthermore, on the authorship of this work Mitchell states, "that it would be difficult to name any one among the worthies of that age, save the author of the Letters, who could have drawn up a Catechism so rich in imagery, so full and practical in all that relates to the origin and progress of the divine life in the soul, containing so many of his favourite modes of expression, and so thoroughly moulded according to the system expanded in his larger theological works" (Catechisms of the Second Reformation, p. xxxv). If you would like an easy-reading primer to the thought of one of the Reformations' theological giants, this is about as good a place as any to start! 105 pages.

SHAW, J.W.

Hephzibah Beulah. Our Covenants the National and Solemn League; and Covenanting by the Reformed Presbyterian Synod in America: Considered (1872)
A very useful easy-to-read introductory work to the topics it deals with. General Scriptural principles upon which this book is based are: 1. "Departure from former laudable attainments, is a great evil, severely threatened in the Holy Scriptures; and that for which every one, who is guilty, must be accountable to the Righteous Judge of all the earth; 2. They who consent unto the unrighteous deeds of others, are chargeable with guilt, as well as the principal actors; 3. Societies, or individuals, having once publicly and solemnly vowed unto the Most High God; and still, after the strictest enquiry, remain satisfied in their own mind, that their vows were scriptural; should seriously endeavor to act up to the true spirit and intention of these vows; and no power upon earth, nor any class of men, whether majority or minority, in a nation, can ever possibly dissolve the obligation." Chapters include: The National Covenant and Solemn League and Covenant reviewed; Their Binding Obligations Shown; The Possibility That Adherence to them May Be Professed, While They are Virtually Abandoned; The Covenant Sworn and Subscribed by Synod at Pittsburgh, May 27th, 1871; Is It a Renovation or a New Covenant?; The Covenant Does Not Contain All That the Church is Bound to in America; Charges Against the Covenant; Reason Why Some Who Do Not Like It, Swear It; The Covenants National and Solemn League Must Be Maintained." 78 pages.

WAITE, D.A.

Heresies of Westcott and Hort: As Seen In Their Own Writings (1979)
"Regardless of what side of the Westcott and Hort textual criticism of the traditional Greek text which underlies our Authorized (King James) version of 1611, I believe it is of the utmost importance to see once and for all that the leaders in the textual revolution which unseated the traditional received Greek text from its place of undisputed prominence for over 15 centuries, were not, as most of the evangelical and fundamentalist world today believes, fundamentalists, or even orthodox in many of their beliefs. It is my personal belief that this heterodoxy on their part blinded their intellects, and prejudiced them adversely and unfairly in the textual theories of the Greek New Testament" writes Waite. Chapter one includes background information to this debate, with the following chapters dealing with the various theological heresies of Westcott and Hort. In these chapters we find numerous heresies involving the person and work of Christ, the doctrine of salvation (including proof that Westcott embraced Universalism and various other errors on the atonement) and errors on the doctrines of Inspiration and Inerrancy (plus much more). Though some of Waite's own Fundamentalist/Premillennial confusion is included in this book, there is much research and information that can be gleaned from this title which is useful. So chew up the meat and spit out the bones. 42 pages.

REFORMATION VERSUS RECONSTRUCTION (AND DOUG WILSON'S ANABAPTISTIC CIVIL ANTINOMIANISM) by Reg Barrow
.25, or FREE at: http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualnls/porn.htm
Also titled Pornography, the Anabaptists, and Doug Wilson's Civil Antinomianism (1997) Pointed but irenic, Barrow decisively refutes the view of Doug Wilson (cf. "Cyberporn: A Case Study" [Credenda/Agenda, vol. 7, no. 5, p. 11]), many modern Theonomists and the civil libertarians, that the production and distribution of pornography is not a crime (and thus not subject to negative penal sanctions by the civil magistrate). Barrow demonstrates that Wilson's view of civil government (which logically results in such a monstrous conclusion) is actually a overly strict view of the regulative principle. This "hyper-regulativism" (denying lawful inferences, or what Samuel Rutherford calls "logical consequence") is then wrongly applied to the civil magistrate, rather than to worship (when rightly interpreted). He also points out the link between Wilson's view and the principles of the Anabaptists, Libertines and other antiestablishmentarian forces. With an impressive array of historical citations (primarily John Calvin, George Gillespie, Samuel Rutherford, and the Westminster Confession of Faith), and a cogent analysis and application of relevant Scripture passages, Barrow shows clearly that Wilson's view of civil government "gives birth to illegitimate offspring in the case of pornography, contradicting as it does common sense (the light of nature), our reformed fathers in the faith, and the express commands and approved examples of Scripture. In short, it is anything but the 'classical Protestant' position, and anything but biblical." Expressing his belief that many hold to this erroneous notion of the magistrate out of ignorance, he concludes his essay with a heartfelt call to his modern Theonomic brethren (and others) to study the reformation source documents now available (and adopt the historic Theonomy of the Reformation). He also provides a brief list of questions that readily manifest the socially destructive outworkings of Wilson's teaching. This is a much-needed treatment of a topic neglected for far too long. Barrow's valuable contribution is an excellent introduction to the historical theonomy of the Westminster divines and is sure to prime the reader for much productive study of the view of civil government "once delivered unto the saints" (Jude 3). This item is also available as a bound photocopy for $1.99 [US funds]) and is appendix "B" excerpted from Saul in the Cave of Adullam: A Testimony Against the Fashionable Sub-Calvinism of Doug Wilson (Editor of Credenda/Agenda Magazine); and, For Classical Protestantism and the Attainments of the Second Reformation ($7.98 P, $19.00 HP) or free at: http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualnls/Saul.htm.

BARROW, GREG

The Covenanted Reformation Defended Against Contemporary Schismatics (1998)

The title continues: "A Response and Antidote Primarily to the Neopresbyterian Malignancy and Misrepresentations, and the Manufactured "Steelite" Controversy, Found in Richard Bacon's A Defense Departed; With a Refutation of Bacon's Independency, Popery, Arminianism, Anabaptism and Various Other Heresies (Including an Exhibition of His Opposition to Scripture and the Covenanted Reformation, in General; and His Opposition to John Calvin, John Knox, the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland [Especially 1638-1649], Samuel Rutherford, George Gillespie, the Testimony of the Covenanter Martyrs, the Reformed Presbytery, the Puritan Reformed Church of Edmonton and a Host of Other Prominent Reformers from Past Generations, in Particular) -- With Copious Notes on Mr. Bacon's Backsliding and His Blackening of the Blue Banner; as Well as Various Replies to Other Modern Malignants."

Though set in the context of a debate with one individual, this book addresses a number of specific problems which plague the Presbyterian and Reformed churches of our day in general. As Reg Barrow notes in the "Publisher's Preface,"

I believe that there is one primary answer to the question of what makes The Covenanted Reformation Defended uniquely useful and it is this: it exposes the many differences between what took place during the two previous great Reformations (of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries) -- which were based upon and agreeable to the glorious covenanted Reformations found in the Old Testament -- and what the bulk of the Presbyterian and Reformed churches (corporately), elders (individually), and church members (individually) mistakenly think took place. It conclusively and irrefutably demonstrates that those churches which today call themselves Presbyterian (and even many which claim a more general Reformed heritage) have grievously departed from the Scriptural standards and principles of these previous Spirit led Reformations. This will become progressively (and painfully) clear as the reader witnesses evidence upon evidence of defection from biblically based Reformation attainments (Phil. 3:16) -- and the burying and/or removing of the ancient Reformation landmarks. Ultimately, when the testimony and evidence is weighed in light of Scriptural verities, it is entirely safe to say that the original Reformers would not only have sought negative ecclesiastical sanctions against our modern pseudo-Reformers, but in many cases negative civil sanctions as well.

Larry Birger, in his introduction, also comments,

(Greg) Barrow provides the bridge back to the teachings of our Reformed forefathers, his work serving as a skillful and much needed "Covenanter Primer." His explanations of key (and ill-understood, in our day) doctrines of the Reformation are the clearest I've ever read (this is especially true in regard to his treatment of the visible church and separation, the Lord's Supper and covenanting--RB). His numerous citations of non-Covenanter writers demonstrate that these doctrines are not at all peculiar to Covenanters, and indeed, that they are foundational to Protestantism. That these doctrines are not understood by the pastors and people of our day is a heartbreaking commentary on how far we "Protestants" have fallen from the Protestant Reformation.

In keeping with this theme, and why this book will be of inestimable value to the serious student of Reformation, Reg Barrow writes,

A secondary benefit of this work, which makes it uniquely useful to our generation, is seen in that this book will give the diligent reader the historical context and doctrinal foundation from which to profitably understand and apply the myriad of Covenanter books and other source documents of both Reformations (which are once again available) to our contemporary situation. "Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples" (Isa. 8:16). I know of no other book which does this so well -- or even comes close. If you want a key to understanding some of the most perplexing aspects of Reformation thought you will do no better than to carefully study what is contained in The Covenanted Reformation Defended (from the "Publisher's Preface").

Furthermore, Birger again comments on the general usefulness and the broad spectrum of issues (relevant to Reformed Christians) addressed in this title,

The net result of Greg Barrow's obliteration of Richard Bacon's strident slander is the clear exposition of the classical Protestant doctrines and practices of the Puritan Reformed Church of Edmonton, and modern and historical Covenanters. Dear reader, you hold in your hands a treasure of inestimable value. In the love of Christ I earnestly plead with you to read it: read it carefully; read it diligently; read it prayerfully; read it repeatedly (and buy copies for your friends and enemies, and urge them to read it). For the doctrines and practices it expounds and defends are nothing less than a testimony against malignant error, a lifting up of the true and faithful Blue Banner, and hopefully, by the grace of God, a humble contribution to the coming third Reformation and the worldwide overthrow of Antichrist. Nowhere else will you find such a "Covenanter Primer" to guide you skillfully and safely back to the old paths, wherein is rest for your souls--and for the entire Church of the Lord Jesus Christ. Many today are proclaiming, "Peace, peace, when there is no peace." Barrow proclaims to you the true peace, the scriptural balm of healing for the festering, debilitating wounds of Christ's beloved Church! (from the "Introduction").

Moreover, if what is set forth in this book is true, the question at once arises concerning the Christian's duty before God in regard to separation from the teaching and practice of those denominations which continue in their public defection from biblically based Reformation standards. Reg Barrow (in the "Publisher's Preface") writes,

(A)s documented and substantiated throughout this book, it is easy to see that barring open public repentance by most (if not all) modern Presbyterian denominations (i.e. the neopresbyterian denominations), no Christian can lawfully attend upon their public ordinances without denying the biblically based testimony and attainments of the Second Reformation. The testimony of the Second Reformation and the testimony of the neopresbyterians are mutually exclusive at too many crucial points -- not the least of which includes the Scriptural doctrine and duty of covenanting. Even Judah was specifically commanded of the Lord not to communicate in the lawful ordinance of covenanting (i.e. swearing "The LORD liveth") with Israel while Israel remained in public rebellion against the Lord. "Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend; and come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go ye up to Bethaven, nor swear, The LORD liveth" (Hosea 4:15, emphases added). Similarly, in this book, Bacon's errors (particularly his opposition to the Solemn League and Covenant) are seen to be symptomatic of the greater defection from covenanted attainments seen on a larger scale in our day.

Adducing a few more specifics, Reg Barrow again comments,

This book... defends the progressive nature of testimony-bearing and the testimony itself (Ps. 78). The commanded duties of pointedly testifying against defection from biblical attainments and refusing ecclesiastical communion with obstinately backsliding churches are true acts of love (Prov. 27:6). And though they are often met with severe denunciations and even martyrdom (note the reception the faithful testimony of the prophets and apostles received throughout Scripture), The Covenanted Reformation Defended will make this job of "sanctifying the Lord God in our hearts" and being "ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh" for the "reason of the hope that is in us" (1 Pet. 3:15) much easier. For those who recognize the enormity of the problems among the neopresbyterian churches -- and act in accord with Scripture (and the requirements of a present testimony), separating themselves from these polluted bodies -- the Reformation understanding of the distinctions dealt with in The Covenanted Reformation Defended are indispensable. Whether it be the Reformed distinctions between the being and well being (see Misrepresentation 2, point D) or the broken and settled state of the visible church, covenanting and covenant obligation (see Misrepresentation 3) or the meaning and proper administration of the Lord's Supper (see Misrepresentation 4), this book is a paleopresbyterian weapon with which to be reckoned. Exceptionally telling (in light of corporate backsliding from Reformation attainments) is the segment on the Westminster Assembly's official statements defending their view of close communion, particularly concerning Larger Catechism Q&A #173 on the meaning of "ignorance" and "scandal." The remarkable research found here (see pages 141-152) forms the most extensive commentary on this significant section of the Larger Catechism that I have ever seen. Moreover, if the Westminster Divines were correct in their understanding of Scripture on this point (and I believe they were) then it would seem that almost every Presbyterian minister who has vowed to uphold the Westminster standards (since about 1652) has perjured himself (whether ignorantly or otherwise); for the original intent of the Westminster Divines concerning close communion is well beyond question -- and the historical record gives every indication that the truth found here has been laid aside and/or buried by neopresbyterians for centuries. So, again we find that this book is unearthing another Reformation landmark -- this time defending the classic teaching and practice of the best Reformed churches on the Lord's Supper. And again the ramifications are massive. For those who vow to uphold the Westminster Larger Catechism (a part of the covenanted uniformity envisioned, and sworn to, in the Solemn League and Covenant) paedocommunion is out! All forms of open communion are out! Half-hearted, non-covenanted and non-confessional attempts at close communion are out! Even defective, overly strenuous or overly demanding "hyper-Covenanter" communion is out! The mature biblical mean, concerning admission to the Lord's Supper, set down by the Westminster Divines and the Scottish General Assembly (in her best days) -- as confirmed in these pages -- guards against both the extremes of latitudinarianism and legalism (i.e. Scripturally unauthorized rigor). The biblical beauty and balance of the work of both these Assemblies is a joy to behold... Furthermore, what do you do in regard to whole denominations of ministers who are breaking solemn ordination vows to God (and many do not even know it) on this point? This and many other like questions are answered in the pages you are about to read. With the release of this book (along with the many other classic Covenanter, Presbyterian and Reformed works which we at SWRB [and others] have had the privilege to recently publish), the covenanted remnant now has an arsenal of nuclear tipped ICBM's from which to defend the faith, bear witness against defection, and honor and glorify God. Neopresbyterians who refuse to repent, in the face of such overwhelming biblical and historical evidence of (and godly testimony against) their defection, would be well advised to construct sturdy bomb shelters. Those who read this book, and who seek the truth above all else, are about to confront you with some serious questions. On the other hand, the faithful remnant should be encouraged to "stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel" (Phil 1:27); remembering, as Calvin has noted, "that some special assistance is promised to godly teachers and ministers of the word; so that the fiercer the attacks of Satan, and the stronger the hostility of the world, so much the more does the Lord defend and guard them by extraordinary protection" (Calvin's Commentary on Isaiah 50:7). This book would seem to be a useful part of the Lord's "extraordinary protection" for the contemporary Covenanter, and has been produced with many singular signs of God's providential care and intervention. The faithful Covenanter is encouraged to use it wisely for personal edification (as well as the edification of one's family and church), to comfort and/or confront others who are seeking the truth, and, above all, to pray that God will add the testimony of His Spirit to the truths it contains (from the "Publisher's Preface").

In short, if you want a book which will help you to understand the Reformation view of numerous important, foundational Scriptural doctrines and their application to the present day; written in an easy-to-read and easy-to-understand format; uncovering many rare Reformation source documents (from the Westminster Assembly's advice to the English Parliament on the Lord's Supper to the official records of Calvin's Covenanting in Geneva), this is an unsurpassed work that should not be missed. 318 pages, 8.5" X 11". Publisher's Preface to The Covenanted Reformation Defended Against Contemporary Schismatics (1998)
An overview of the landmark work The Covenanted Reformation Defended Against Contemporary Schismatics
, focusing on some of the most controversial points found therein. Contrasts the many differences between the faith of the original Reformers with that which goes by the name of the Reformed faith today -- with many examples from source documents exhibiting the differences between the neopresbyterians (RPCNA, OPC, PCA, BPC, etc.) and the paleopresbyterians (like those at the Westminster Assembly). Informs the reader, in summary form, why the The Covenanted Reformation Defended "conclusively and irrefutably demonstrates that those churches which today call themselves Presbyterian (and even many which claim a more general Reformed heritage) have grievously departed from the Scriptural standards and principles of these previous Spirit led Reformations (i.e. the great Reformations of the 16th and 17th centuries--RB)." DOHMS FAMILY

50 Suggested Tunes for Use With the Scottish Metrical Psalter of 1650 (1998)

Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works. Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD. Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually. Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth; O ye seed of Israel his servant, ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones. He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth. Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations; Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac; And hath confirmed the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant (1 Chr. 16:8-17, emphases added).

This tape was produced by Elder Lyndon Dohms and his family to help those using or making the transition to the Psalter of the Covenanted Reformation (i.e. the Scottish Metrical Psalter of 1650). This Psalter passed through the intense scrutiny of -- and was authorized for public use by -- both the Westminster Assembly and the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland (at the height of her purity) in the mid seventeenth century. Concerning the care and preparation that went into this unsurpassed Metrical Psalter, the January 15 (1993) issue of The Original Covenanter and Contenting Witness magazine cites an earlier article which notes,

Rouse bestowed upon it his greatest pains. This was not enough. For six Years it endured the scrutiny of, and was revised by, two of the most learned Assemblies that ever sat in the British Isles; at a time, too, when these men were zealous for truth and suspicious of error. Every word was weighed, and every expression made exact, before admitted into any statement of Biblical truth. They wrote not so that they might be understood, but so that they could not be misunderstood. This exactness and conscientiousness they carried with them in their translation of the Psalms. In versifying them, they labored not to clothe the mind of the Spirit in poetic finery, but to cause the muse to bow to the exact expression of the Holy Ghost.... For more than two centuries (almost three and a half centuries now--RB) they have stood the test, and every attempt to render them more elegant has resulted in a departure from the exact expression of the Spirit (as in the case of the present RPCNA Psalter, The Book of PSalms for Singing--RB). Let us hold fast to this good old version until another proves itself worthy of its place.

Moreover, this Psalter was produced to further national and international covenanted Reformation -- and to fulfill the intent of the Solemn League and Covenant for biblically regulated worship and biblical uniformity. It was crafted with faithfulness to the Word of God utmost in the mind of its translators and fashioned in the manner most fitting for ease of use among the general population -- making it a most conducive engine for discipling the nations. To accomplish this last goal, the Scottish Metrical Psalter provides a version of every Psalm in common metre (except Psalm 136 -- and even this Psalm, with a little ingenuity, can be made to fit the various common metre tunes). With all this in mind it is easy to recognize how (and why) this "tune tape" has been created to help the contemporary Covenanter and Psalm singer make good use of this godly and judicious offering -- a landmark Psalter -- which we have received from the hands of our faithful forefathers.

On this cassette the Dohms provide us with fifty separate tunes (sung acappella), most of which are common metre -- but samples of other tunes used in this Psalter also appear (and are noted by name on the tape before each tune is sung). All the common metre tunes can be interchanged and used with all of the Psalms in the Scottish Metrical Psalter of 1650 (sometimes listed as The Psalms of David in Metre in this catalogue). However, because this cassette is primarily intended to familiarize the listener with a diverse selection of tunes, only Psalms one and 23 are sung in their entirety. The remaining 48 Psalms (Psalms 2-22 and 24-50) make use of two to four verses from each Psalm. This allows the listener to sample a wider range of tunes on one cassette -- and keeps the price of this tape down (as one is not forced to buy numerous tapes to cover the fifty tunes offered here). This is also very useful when it is remembered, as noted above, that all the common metre tunes can be interchanged throughout this Psalter, as all the Psalms (excepting 136) in the Scottish Metrical Psalter are provided in a common metre version. For those who are interested, Psalms 6, 25, 45, 50, 67, 70, 100, 102, 124, 136, 143, 145, 148 are also translated for use with an alternate tune in the Scottish Metrical Psalter (and at least one tune for each of these alternate versions is provided on this tape).

As an added bonus, at the end of this tape, Psalm one is also "lined out" (as mandated in the Westminster Assembly's Directory for Public Worship), with a short explanation provided by elder Dohms for the use of this ancient practice. The "lining out" is included to assist those seeking to utilize the venerable practice of the church as it was upheld during Old Testament times, the days of Christ and the Apostles, and during both Reformations.

In short, this cassette is provided as a valuable tool for those who love to sing God's holy Word, as a useful aid for song leaders (and singers) in preparing for public, family and secret worship, and for the listening pleasure and edification of all those who love to hide God's Word in their heart!

PRICE, GREG

I John 4:7 (#18) Worldwide Calvinistic Unity and Loving One Another (1997)
An amazing sermon which exposes all unity which is not based on truth (e.g. in groups like Promise Keepers) as necessarily based on lies -- and as treason against King Jesus! Defends the Reformation view of visible and covenanted unity and uniformity from Scripture, and from pertinent quotes from Calvin (during first Reformation), Henderson (the second Reformation architect of the Solemn League and Covenant), and others. Exhibits how Reformed teaching has always viewed the real schismatics (whether in the majority or minority) as those who press "independent denominationalism" and as those who tolerate a sinful multiformity -- against the national establishment of the one true Reformed religion. Calvin and the Geneva Presbytery of his day even counseled excommunication and exile for those that would not swear to their "covenanted uniformity" in upholding the Geneva Confession of 1536
(cf. Calvin, Covenanting and Close Communion by Reg Barrow). Moreover, Price shows how our scandalous modern multiformists (which includes the leaders of most so-called "conservative Presbyterian" denominations today) teach and act in direct opposition to Christ's high priestly prayer in John 17, as well as the high standard of visible unity that will one day be attained worldwide (as seen in the prophetic words found in Zechariah 14:9: "And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one"). Furthermore, the portion of this sermon dealing with loving the brethren is one of the most convicting practical sections of a contemporary sermon that we have ever heard. Such preaching is extremely humbling, calculated to exalt Christ and His truth, and to drive sinful human beings to the throne of grace -- seeking everlasting mercy and forgiveness in the only place that it can truly be found. In short, Price calls us back to our first love (individually) and to the biblical attainments of our covenanted forefathers (corporately). It is unlikely that you will find modern preaching much better than this.

STEELE, DAVID, editor

The Contending Witness, The Reformation Advocate and The Original Covenanter magazines
The following list of magazines, edited by David Steele, comprise what is likely the best compilation of Christian periodicals ever amassed under one set of bindings. Nothing we know of (before or since), authored as magazine articles related to full-orbed nation shaking biblical Reformation, even comes close to the consistent quality of writing found in these short works on various subjects. Steele himself should probably be considered the best theologian of the nineteenth century, and the other contributors to these magazines were all approaching the same class. A healthy portion of Steele's writing is found in these magazines, as he only wrote a few other books, so the reader is encouraged to sample for himself some of the best writing (defending the Covenanted Reformation) you will find anywhere!

STEELE, DAVID

Notes on the Apocalypse (1870)
In 1779, in their Testimony and Warning Against the Blasphemies and Idolatry of Popery
, the Reformed Presbytery called Durham's commentary on Revelation, "the best exposition of that book that has yet been published" (p. 61n). Had they had the privilege of reading Steele's Notes on the Apocalypse we are quite certain that they would have given it a similar endorsement. Though written in a different style than Durham's work, Steele's notes on Revelation may be even more valuable in many respects -- Steele having taken a more decided position "in the wilderness." Steele also had the benefit of many more resources, having written over two centuries later. Steele's aim in writing this book is made clear in his own words taken from the preface,

As this work is intended for the instruction and edification of the unlearned, rather than for the entertainment of the learned, words of foreign extract are used as seldom as possible. Practical remarks and reflections are rarely introduced; the principal aim being simply to ascertain and present to the reader the mind of the Holy Spirit. How far this object has been accomplished, is of course left to the judgment of the honest inquirer. The reader, however, in forming his judgment of the value of these Notes, may be reminded of that inspired rule in searching the Scriptures,--"Comparing spiritual things with spiritual." To assist him in the application of this divine rule, many chapters and verses are quoted from other parts of the Bible, but especially within the Apocalypse itself; that by concentrating the various rays upon particular texts or symbols, their intrinsic light may be rendered more luminous. Thus the interpretation given, if correct, may be confirmed and illustrated.

Appendices include a section on, The New Jerusalem, The Antichrist, The Image of the Beast, The Beast's "deadly wound," The Little Book, The Death of the Witnesses, The Mark of the Beast, The First Resurrection, The Identity of the Two Witnesses, Sounding of the Seventh Trumpet and The Title of this Book (i.e. the Book of Revelation--RB). This work also includes various "animadversions on the interpretations (of Revelation--RB) of several among the most learned and approved expositors of Britain and America." Comments on this work include the four given below, all which were given without the solicitation or knowledge of the author. The Evangelical Repository notes, "the author adduces a greater number of Scriptural illustrations than any other writer on prophecy we ever met with." Hutcheson writes, "I can recommend it to any person as condensing the best thoughts to be had on the subject." Brooks says, "I have derived more knowledge of the Apocalypse from this work than from all other expositions which I have consulted." And finally, John Cunningham comments, "It is neither a dictionary nor concordance; neither a confession of faith, nor an encyclopedia, but a thesaurus of Theology, embodying the characters of all these." Steele dedicated this work to John Cunningham, author of The Ordinance of Covenanting. 323 pages.

STEELE, DAVID

The Two Witnesses: Their Cause, Number, Character, Furniture and Special Work (1859)
This is a great companion volume to Steele's Notes on the Apocalypse
. Here he zeros in on and works primarily from the text of Revelation 11:13, "I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophecy." Steele deals with testimony-bearing, Antichrist, Popery, the beasts of Revelation, the mark of the beast, 666, the image of the beast, civil and ecclesiastical apostasy, Reformation, covenanting, heresy, schism, terms of communion, slavery, sectarianism, Mormonism, Independency, freemasonry, history, worship, idolatry, Britain, the United States, Canada, mystical Babylon, the last days, the ultimate victory of the church and a host of other subjects!

As is usually the case with Steele, he makes the doctrines of Scripture eminently practical. For example, note how the faithful witnesses are continually called to testify against open opposition to the Lord's Covenanted Zion and the attainment of biblical Reformation (in "the faith which was once delivered unto the saints"); and against whom this testimony is directed:

(T)hese witnesses are called and commissioned to testify especially against Antichrist -- a false christ, and therefore an opposing christ. But Christ is to be considered either personally or mystically; either abstractly in his personal rights and prerogatives, or in the concrete, in the rights and immunities of his church. There is this prejudice, too prevalent, against Christians testifying against Christians! This we are often told, is contrary to the law of charity. We have not so learned Christ. They are not all Israel which are of Israel. Much of the business of these two prophets is to oppose prophets -- to prophesy against the shepherds, Ezek. 34:2. Moses with his miracles must confront the magicians with their enchantments, Exod. 8:19. Elijah must confront the prophets of Baal, 1 Kings 18:25. Paul must counteract false apostles, 2 Cor. 11:13. In short, the direct object of these witnesses' testimony is apostate christendom -- those who depart from the faith, 1 Tim. 4:1 -- who have gone out from fellowship and renounced the doctrines of the apostolic church, 1 John 2:19. Their special work is to testify against error and its propagators and abettors, together with ungodliness, the natural fruit of error, rather than against pagans. (The Two Witnesses, p. 14).

(T)hese two witnesses have always testified -- not formally against pagans or infidels as such; but -- against apostate Christians, as composing an organized and complex system of opposition to the Lord and his Anointed. And just here, the witnesses have detected the secret of Antichrist's successful enterprise among the human family..."Many false prophets are gone out into the world... this is a deceiver and an Antichrist," 2 John 7. The combination is ostensibly on the side and in the interest of Christ, and the elements of which Antichrist is composed were obviously professing Christians, "They went out from us, but they were not of us, for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us, " I John 2:19. Here is the apostasy, and so the witnesses are fully borne out in asserting that Antichrist is a great Christian apostasy! To trace the origin and development, in the organization and modifications of this enemy of all righteousness, is the special work of Christ's witnesses. (The Two Witnesses, pp. 17-18).

Moreover, having taken his own place "in the wilderness" (i.e. having separated himself from, and been ostracized by the "civilization" of the obstinately defecting RPCNA and other denominations of his day [2 Thes. 3:6;14-15; Rev. 12:6; 17:3]), it was given to Steele to see and expound those grand old principles of our covenanted forefathers (who sat at Westminster and in the best Reformed churches during both the first and second Reformations -- the Scottish Presbyterians being granted the greatest measure of attainments (as a settled body) from 1638-1649). Thus, if you are interested in Reformation eschatology, with some of the strongest possible application, individually and corporately (in keeping with the body of Reformed truth), it is unlikely that you will find a better introduction to these topics than this!

As an additional bonus we have added Steele's 19 page debate with James M. Willson to this book -- making this a 62 page book -- at no extra cost. Steele references this in his preface to the Two Witnesses and this debate forms an ideal appendix to this work -- as it shows how "Reformation Principles Exhibited" (part of the RPCNA's subordinate standards from 1806 to 1979) "necessarily subverts the Covenanted Reformation" and the progressive human testimony of Christ's witnesses. But even in these final words, and to prevent the unwary from stumbling into the heresies propounded by Rome on the one hand and the Anabaptists on the other, we leave the reader to ponder the following caution given by Steele near the close of his preface,

The reader of the following sheets, (or the reviewer, if any shall deem it worthy of notice), is requested, for his own sake, not to confound in his thoughts the visible with the invisible church, divine with human testimony or authority -- saving faith with terms of communion. Long experience and observation suggests this caution.

We hope that you obtain and study this fine work -- and that you will find it edifying, as well as a useful weapon in your battle with the beasts of Revelation.

WESTMINSTER DIVINES & OTHER PURITANS (Gouge, Gataker, et al.)

The Westminster Annotations and Commentary on the Whole Bible (6 volumes, 1657)
The original title read: "Annotations Upon all the Books of the Old and New Testament: This Third, above the First and Second, Edition so enlarged, As they make an entire Commentary on the Sacred Scriptures: The like never before published in English. Wherein the Text is Explained, Doubts Resolved, Scripture Parallel'd, and Various Readings observed; By the Labour of certain Learned Divines thereunto appointed, and therein employed, As is expressed in the Preface." The preface (found in the first volume) recounts not only a short history of the English Bible, but sets forth the great advantage to true Religion which accrues (contrary to the mysticism of the Anabaptists and the anti-intellectualism of the modern backsliding church) when faithful notes are "bound in" with the Scripture text -- this bringing forth nothing different than the effect generated (through God's grace) by faithful preaching, faithful commentaries, faithful creeds, faithful covenants, faithful confessions, etc. Pointing out that this blessing from God was never more obvious than in the case of the Geneva Bible ($159.95, leather hardcover) and its marginal notes (and that the people knew it to be so when they were left with Bibles without annotations honoring to God), the preface further states, "hence were divers of the Stationers and Printers of London induced (by the people--RB) to petition the committee of the Honourable House of Commons, for licence to print the Geneva notes upon the Bible, or that some notes might be fitted to the new translation: which was accordingly granted, with an order for review and correction of those of the Geneva edition, by leaving out such of them as there was cause to dislike, by clearing those that were doubtful, and by supplying such as were defective. For which purpose letters were directed to some of us from the Chair of the Committee for Religion (in 1648--RB), and personal invitations to others, to undertake and divide the task among us, and so cometh in our part, whereof we shall give the world a true and just account in that which followeth." The detailed account which follows in the preface is fascinating, mentioning, among many other things, the divines' "use of... the Dutch Bibles... set forth at... Holland, by order of the States."

The diligence given, the energy expended, the obvious humility, and the fearful trembling before God's Word which is evident in these commentators makes this truly a classic Puritan work -- a work of great value! Just knowing, as Barker points out, that this commentary was "prepared mostly by Westminster divines, by order of Parliament, at the time of the Assembly" (Puritan Profiles, p. 37), certainly bodes well for the level of scholarship it contains. Moreover, with Gouge, one of the most respected English Covenanters at the Assembly playing a major role, the thoughtful student of Scripture and history ought to take note: for a theological feast of mature Puritan thought surely awaits those that sup at this table. Esteemed, by the mid-1640's, "as the father of the London Ministers," Gouge was elected as Assessor for the Westminster Assembly on Nov. 25, 1647. His detractors sometimes called him an "arch Puritan" (cf. Ibid., p. 35). Dr. Gouge's "share of the useful work consisted of Kings, and the subsequent books down to Esther, inclusive" (Smith, Select Memoirs of English and Scottish Divines, p. 534). Most of the others chosen to this work had similar credentials, though not all exhibit equal proficiency and some later backslid from attainments reached at this point. Nevertheless, when the commentators were first chosen, these Annotations were produced by some of the most qualified English Puritans -- as a historical high water mark for Puritan scholarship was beginning to crest. Furthermore, in prosecuting this work the divines note, "therefore we have put ourselves to much more pains (for many months) in consulting with many more authors, in several languages, than at first we thought of, that (for the propriety of the original text, for pertinent and profitable variety of versions, for consonancy of parallel Scriptures, and for perspicuity in clearing of the darkest places) we might bring in such observations, as might not only serve to edify the ordinary reader, but might likewise gratify our brethren of the ministry, at least such among them, as have not the means to purchase, or leisure to pursue, so many books, as (by order of the Committee) we were furnished with all, for the finishing of the work, committed to our hands" (preface). As the work wore on, however, it became apparent that the original intention (of printing these annotations as marginal notes in the Bible) would no longer fit the scope and length of commentary that had been produced. Thus, the notes were not added to the Scriptures directly, but rather published as a separate commentary (which we are offering here) -- except that we have divided the work into six volumes rather than the original two, because of logistics.

Brook calls this a "useful work" and says of its authors that "several of them were celebrated puritans" (Lives of the Puritans, vol. 3, p. 221n). Spurgeon comments that it "contains valuable remarks" and that "the work is probably less esteemed than it should be" (Commenting and Commentaries). In "A Narrative of His Life and Death" prefixed to volume one of Gouge's three volume commentary on Hebrews ($99.00 HP, $59.99 P), we also find this note, "He was likewise chosen by a Committee of Parliament, among others, to make Annotations upon the Bible, being well-known to be a judicious interpreter of Scripture. How well he hath performed his trust is evident to all that read the annotations from the beginning of the first book of Kings unto Job, which was his part." Furthermore, Neal, in his history, furnishes us with a helpful (though partial) list of each of the specific authors and books of the Bible they worked on in the Annotations. He writes, "Those with asterisks were not of the assembly. Rev. Mr. Ley, subdean of Chester (The commentary on the five books of Moses), Dr. Gouge (1 & 2 Kings, 1 & 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther), *Mr. Meric Casaubon (The Psalms), Mr Francis Taylor (Proverbs), Dr. Reynolds (Ecclesiastes), *Mr Smallwood, recommended by archbishop Usher (Solomon's Song), Mr. Gataker (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations), *Mr. Pemberton in the first edition and *Bishop Richardson in the second (Ezekiel, Daniel, and the smaller Prophets), Mr. Ley (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John), Dr. D. Featly... (St. Paul's Epistles). There were two other persons concerned in this work, who might probably have the other parts of Scripture allotted them, not here mentioned, viz. Mr. Downham and Mr. Reading" (pp. 504-505). (We have not been able to ascertain who wrote the notes to books not covered in the list above, so if anyone is privy to this information please pass it on to us, along with your source.)

Additionally, as should be evident, the Annotations were not, strictly speaking, a work of the Westminster Assembly per se, but rather a work primarily by men who attended the Westminster Assembly -- including a few others chosen to this task by Parliament. Notwithstanding, we thought it prudent to title this work in accord with one of the primary names by which it has come to be commonly known (i.e "The Westminster Annotations"). As with much of the literature that was produced by those attending the Westminster Assembly, or by those sympathetic to their work, the modern reader has much to gain by carefully considering the words of these spiritual giants. This work is no exception and we pray that this newly published edition will strengthen and unite the church, turn individuals to righteousness, uplift the family, and help direct the nations to the covenanting love that surrounded the work at the Westminster Assembly in the seventeenth century -- and in all this bring glory to God! 2383 (8.5" X 11") pages.

THE ENGLISH HEXAPLA EXHIBITING THE SIX IMPORTANT ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT SCRIPTURES, WICLIF, TYNDALE, CRANMER, GENEVAN, ANGLO-RHEMISH, AUTHORIZED OR KING JAMES VERSION (1841)

"Hexapla," of course, means "six-fold" or "six-columned" As the section of this book explaining the "Plan of the English Hexapla" notes, "the term 'Hexapla' was originally applied to the work executed by Origen in the 3rd century; in which the first column contained the Hebrew Text of the Old Testament; the second, the Hebrew text in Greek letters; the third, Aquila's Greek version; the fourth, the translation of Symmachus; the fifth, the LXX version (i.e. the Septuagint--RB); the sixth, Theodotion's version." The English Hexapla offered here contains the six English translations noted in the title, arranged side by side for easy comparison and reference. Dates for each version used are as follows: Wiclif (1380), Tyndal (1534), Cranmer (1539), Geneva (1557), Rheims (1582), King James Version (1611). Of special interest may be the Geneva 1557 version (from a copy of the first edition), as both Geneva Bibles presently in print contain later versions (1599 and 1602) of this text. It should also be noted that the notes to the Geneva Bible are not included in the English Hexapla, just the text. The 1611 edition of the KJV will also be of value to those who would like to compare it with the more modern version of this translation. "The notation of the verses has been inserted in all the translations, for convenience of reference... In illustration of the utility of the comparison of the various translations, much that is interesting might be advanced, but which the use of the volume will at once afford. The varied, although ordinarily equivalent manner in which the different translators render the same phrase, often throws much light upon the exact meaning; and when the versions vary in sense, the enquiry suggested with reference to the Original cannot fail to afford profit while it interests" ("Plan of the English Hexapla," pp. 161-162). Additionally this English Hexapla also includes "The original Greek text after Scholz with the various readings of the Textus Receptus and the principal Constantinopolitan and Alexanderine manuscripts, and a complete collation of Scholz's text with Griesbach's edition of 1805... The Greek text has been placed in the upper part of each page, for the purpose of facilitating the comparison of the versions with the Original, so desirable when they vary in rendering any passage." This is all preceeded by a detailed and annotated 160 page historical account of the English translations.
