Ladies of the
Covenant (1851)
Memoirs of distinguished Scottish female characters, embracing the period of
the covenant and the persecution. The introduction notes the importance of the
lives of these courageous women, when it states: "They have especially by
the magnanimity with which they suffered in the cause of truth, emphatically
taught us the important principle that we are in all things and at all times to
do what is right; and as to the disapprobation, opposition, and persecution of
men, in whatever way manifested, or to whatever extent, we are to let that take
its chance, a principle, the importance of which it is difficult to
over-estimate; which lies at the foundation of all that is great and good in
character; which has enabled the greatest and the best men, by the blessing of
God, to achieve the great purposes they have formed for advancing the highest
interests of mankind, and upon which it is necessary for the good soldier of
Christ to act in every age, in an age in which the church enjoys tranquillity,
as well as when she suffers persecution." Samuel Rutherford's (and others)
correspondence with these exceptional Christian women is noted throughout. 494
pages of soul-stirring history!

The Classical Protestant Doctrine of the Church
This tape, read by Larry Birger, is chapter 2 in Greg Barrow's The
Covenanted Reformation Defended (free at:
http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualnls/misrep2.htm). It covers some of the most
important (and often forgotten, in our day) aspects of the Reformation doctrine
of the church. Numerous citations are included, from many Reformation leaders
and the confessional statements of the best Reformed churches. Without the
distinctions made here you are likely to misunderstand not only the Reformation
view of the church, but also related questions (like why the Reformers accepted
Roman Catholic baptism [it was the Anabaptists that rejected the baptism of
Rome, because of errors related to these very questions]). Furthermore, as
Barrow points out, the Reformed distinction regarding the "being" and
the "well being" of the church is absolutely indispensable. Without
an understanding of this crucial Scriptural distinction concerning the church
you will not be able to fully understand the best Reformers on any issues about
or related to the church.

Assurance of Faith: Calvin, English Puritanism, and the
Dutch Second Reformation
In-depth studies and comparisons of William Perkins, Willem Teellinck, the
Westminster Confession, John Owen, Alexander Comrie, and Thomas Goodwin
convincingly demonstrate with fresh insights that the differences between
Calvin and the English/Dutch Calvinism on assurance arose primarily from a
newly evolving pastoral context rather than from foundational variations in
doctrine. One of the best books on assurance, maybe even the best. "This
is a clearly-written study of the ways in which faith was related to the
assurance of salvation by the Reformers, the Puritans and the their Dutch
counterparts. Calvin, Beza, Perkins, Owen, Goodwin and the men of the Dutch
Second Reformation are all considered. A most valuable book which bears
scholarly scrutiny and is full of pastoral counsel" (Banner of Truth
catalogue). Approximately 350 pages.

Justification By Faith Alone
_There are five chapters in this book by John MacArthur, RC Sproul, Joel Beeke,
John Gerstner, and John Armstrong. MacArthur_s chapter is entitled _Long Before
Luther,_ and shows that Jesus taught this doctrine. In the remaining four
chapters, each of the words in the phrase _Justification by Faith Alone_ is
emphasized and examined. At the end is an appendix by Dr. Gerstner in which he
responds to the book Rome Sweet Home, by Scott Hahn, a former _Presbyterian_
turned Roman Catholic_ (SDG flyer).

Sola Scriptura:
The Protestant Position on the Bible (1995)
"Sola Scriptura, the formal principle of the Reformation, is essential to
genuine Christianity. Yet this doctrine is under attack like never before.
Christians who want to defend their faith must have a basic understanding of
this doctrine, know how to support it with Scripture proofs, and be able to
discern the enemy's attacks against it. This book assembles the most helpful
information on the doctrine of Sola Scriptura I've seen in one package"
(MacArthur, back cover). Includes: Preface by Bickel; Foreword by Horton;
"What Do We Mean By Sola Scriptura?" by Godfrey; "Sola Scriptura
in the Early Church" by White; "The Establishment of Scripture"
by R.C. Sproul; "The Authority of Scripture" by Armstrong; "The
Sufficiency of the Written Word: Answering the Modern Roman Catholic
Apologists" by MacArthur; "Scripture and Tradition: The Bible and
Tradition in Roman Catholicism" by Ferguson; "The Transforming Power
of Scripture" by Beeke and Lanning"; "Postscript" by
Kistler. Just under 300 pages.

The Bondage
& Liberation of the Will: A Defense of the Orthodox Doctrine of Human
Choice Against Pighius (1543, 1996)
"In the belief that the 1539 edition of Calvin's Institutes,
and in particular its chapters on free choice and predestination, constituted a
greater danger than did the other 'Lutheran' writings, the Dutch Roman Catholic
theologian Albert Pighius wrote a response entitled Ten Books on Human Free
Choice and Divine Grace (1542). Calvin,
when he saw Pighius's work, felt a pressing need to respond to Pighius's first
six books, that is, those on free choice. The result was The Bondage
and Liberation of the Will (1543). The
Bondage and Liberation of the Will is
undoubtedly the most significant of Calvin's works hitherto not translated in
English. This is in striking contrast to Luther's study on the same topic,
which is one of his best-known publications." This is Calvin's
"fullest treatment of the relation between grace and free will, and
contains important material not found elsewhere in his writings. It also
contains far more discussion of the early church fathers than does any other of
Calvin's works, apart from the Institutes. It is high time that this major work is made available to those whose
knowledge of Calvin is confined to English translations" (back cover). 303

Truth for All
Time: A Brief Outline of the Christian Faith (translated by Scott Olyott,1998)
"John Calvin knew that if the biblical truths rediscovered at the
Reformation were to spread throughout the world, they would have to be
presented in a form which ordinary people could understand. So, during the
winter of 1536-1537, the 29-year-old Calvin wrote, in French, his Brief Outline
of the Christian Faith... (This) is Calvin's striking but concise attempt to
define the Christian faith for ordinary people!... Here you have the very core
of Protestant belief and feel the warmth of its ardent love for God and men. As
you read this book you will sense that the truth of God, so clearly taught
here, is something that you are expected to live. May this be the experience of
every reader who, by reading this book, is looking at the Christian faith for
the first time. And may this increasingly be the experience of all of us who,
by God's kindness have already been brought into personal union with our Lord
Jesus Christ" (from the Preface by Scott Olyott).96 pages.

The Progress of
Divine Providence (2 cassettes, 1645, 1998)
Gouge was one of the many English Covenanters who swore the Solemn League and
Covenant. He also sat in the Westminster Assembly. This sermon (read by Lyndon
Dohms) was preached in the days of the sitting of this Assembly (Sept. 24,
1645), before the House of Peers assembled in the English Parliament, during a
public fast. It is also available in printed form ($5.98 P, $15.00 HP). Here
Gouge encourages the civil rulers in their duty as nursing fathers (Isa. 49:23)
to the church -- in furthering the covenanted Reformation of his day. Much
attention is also paid to Reformation eschatology as it is witnessed in the
unfolding of history according to God's decree. Gouge offers great
encouragement to Christians living in evil times, as he points to the day when
"the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as
the waters cover the sea" (Hab. 2:14); demonstrating throughout how the
gospel continues to march forward to triumph over the forces of darkness --
with special attention to the manner in which God was using the second
Reformation to crush both the civil and ecclesiastical beasts of Revelation.
Gouge was a postmillennialist and historicist, and he defends this position
from Scripture (and history) throughout this sermon. This is a good example of
the type of preaching that fueled the Puritan revolution in the British Isles
in the mid-seventeenth century.

Why God Sends
Trials Upon His People (1660)
Read by Lyndon Dohms from the sermon "A Cry From the Dead" ($5.99 P,
$16.00 HP). This was the last sermon Guthrie preached before he was martyred
for the covenanted cause of Christ. His own words on resisting sin unto blood
(from this sermon) were thus seen to be incorporated into the faithful practice
of this courageous Covenanter less than a week after he preached them. Contains
many amazing insights on why God sends trials upon His people and how we can
profit from them.

Calvin and the
Calvinists (1982, 1998)
"Recently it has come more and more to be believed that Puritan theology
departed significantly from, and even opposed, the theology of John Calvin.
This study rejects such a view.... My aim is to show that Calvin and the
Puritans were, theologically speaking, at one, and thus to support the truism
that Calvin was a Calvinist," writes Helm in the Preface. This book deals
with the meaning of the death of Christ, faith and assurance, the intercession
of Christ, the will in conversion, preparation for grace, the preaching of the
law and much more.

James Stewart
& John Knox: Scotland's "Two Sons of Oil" (excerpted from John
Howie's Scots Worthies, 1781 ed.;
audio cassette, narrated by Larry Birger, Jr.)
As Birger accurately observes in his introduction to this one-tape
reformational powerhouse, "One great reason the Church is so weak and
divided today is precisely because she has rejected these commandments of her
Lord and Husband [to walk in the footsteps of the flock (Song 1:8), and to seek
out and walk in the old paths (Jer. 6:16)]. Forgetting the works of God in
history, she has thus become an easy prey to the old lies and idolatries of the
Roman Catholic Church, that whore of Babylon, such that so-called Protestantism
today in many ways bears more resemblance to the Roman Church than to the
biblical churches of the Reformation. We are indeed ignorant of our history,
and therefore have been doomed time and again to repeat its mistakes." He
continues, pointing to one of God's powerful remedies for our sinful failings
in this area: "Our gracious Lord has nonetheless provided a way out for
us, by preserving for us the narratives of His great works in history, as well
as His infallible Word by which to judge which are truly the good old paths....
On this tape you'll hear of the lives of two men who exemplified the work of
Christ's 'Two Witnesses' in Scotland, James Stewart, Earl of Moray, and John
Knox. These 'Two Sons of Oil,' like their ancient predecessors, Zerubbabel and
Joshua, illustrate the holy beauty and mighty effectiveness of God's
institutions of Scriptural civil magistracy and gospel ministry. We see from
their high regard for one another and from the work they accomplished in the
Lord how both righteous civil rulers and faithful gospel ministers are
necessary for true and lasting, society-changing reformation. In our age of
ungodly toleration and pretended liberty of conscience (as opposed to the true
Scriptural liberty of conscience promoted by these two eminent reformers), the
emphasis is generally laid upon the ministry only as the agent of reformation
-- and truly, there will be no lasting reformation without a faithful ministry.
Nevertheless, we see from the Scriptural examples of Hezekiah, Josiah, and
other godly rulers, as well as from various instances throughout subsequent
history that the civil rulers are called by, and used by, God to promote and
protect the welfare of His Bride, the Church. These rulers have no authority in
matters of religion, but they have a responsibility about matters of religion
-- to do things like suppressing and uprooting heresy, blasphemy, and idolatry,
and encouraging and promoting faithful ministers -- as all our faithful
Reformed forefathers taught." Learn with excitement how God used these two
faithful men to defeat Antichrist in Scotland, and purify and unify His
faithful Church there. A great tool for seeing the vital importance of the
civil government (as well as the ministry) in reformation!

The Complete Works of Thomas Manton (22 Volumes)
Manton was "one of the most eminent of the Nonconformist divines."
He was born in 1620 and died in 1677. He was chosen to write "The Epistle
to the Reader: Especially Heads of Families" of the famous Westminster
standards. "Received episcopal institution in 1661. Resigned in 1662, on
account of the Act of Uniformity (which among other wicked, Satanic enactments,
its principal terms required a "declaration of 'unfeigned assent and
consent' to everything contained in the Book of Common Prayer, re-ordination
for those not episcopally ordained" and, most evil of all, "a
renunciation of the Solemn League and Covenant. Knowing that the Puritans would
not submit to such terms, the Authorities framed the Act to secure their
expulsion" cf. Sermons of the Great Ejection by Iain Murray [Banner of Truth, reprinted 1962]). He was a man of
great learning and extensive reading, of a sound judgement, and had the art of
reducing volumes of divinity into a narrow compass. According to Charnock, he
was the best collector of sense of the age. Dr. Bates says , 'A clear
judgement, rich fancy, strong memory, and happy elocution, met in him, and were
excellently improved by diligent study'" (James Darling, Cyclopaedia
Bibliographica, 1854, pp. 1953-1954). Some of Manton's better known volumes
contained in this massive set, such as his commentary on James and Jude and his
Sermons on Psalm 119 have been recently reprinted, but the rest of this

The Ancient
History of Psalmody (1852)
This resource covers the character of the age of the Church Fathers and the
history of Psalmody in the early ages of the church after the Apostles.
Statements related to this issue from Pliny, Tertullian, Jerome, Cyril,
Augustine, Cassian, Chrysostom, the Apostolic Constitutions and others are all
included, set in their context and commented on (from the Latin).
Interestingly, M'Master writes,
The truth is, fifty years after the death of the Apostles had not passed by, when the church they had planted with so much purity, and fostered with so much care, exhibited an aspect very different from what it did before. The historian Hegesippus, of the second century, pronounced the virgin purity of the church to have been confined to the Apostolic age. "Monstrous attempts were made, in that century, to reconcile falsehood with truth, light with darkness"(Mosheim, I. 174). In this age originated a bewildering mysticism, an idle monkish seclusion from the relations and duties of active life, and a multiplication of superstitious innovations, which cast a veil of darkness over the truth, substituting for the simplicity of the gospel an unseemly mixture of truth and error. Jerome, of the fourth century, testifies that the "primitive church was tainted with gross errors while the Saviour_s blood was yet warm in Judea." In the following periods the depravity increased. God, indeed, had still his hidden ones, and in their hearts and hands his own cause was preserved; yet the picture of the times is drawn, on the page of history, in dark colours. "There was no charity in works, no discipline in manners." The practice of such periods can go but a little way in the settlement of controversies respecting divine institutions. For satisfaction, as to the appointments of God, we must rest, not on the practice of the Fathers, but on the records of inspired truth. Keeping this in recollection, it may, nevertheless, be interesting to know their matter and modes of worship. And as a somewhat imposing display of research into the early practice of the church, on the subject of Psalmody, has by various writers been made, it may not be inexpedient to inquire, how far their representations of that practice and the inferences they drew from it, are entitled to our confidence.

Isaac Watts_
Heresies On the Trinity and Person of Jesus Christ Exposed (1852)
M'Master writes,
Whatever obscurity, from the ambiguity of his language and other causes, may hang over his views, the following facts admit of no doubt--that is--that Dr. W. was an anti-trinitarian, and that the distinct divine Personality of the Son of God, as equal with the Father, had no place in his acknowledged creed. The labours of his life, in which he manifested more than his usual mental vigour, were in direct opposition to the orthodox faith on this whole subject... He ventured to tell his Maker that the doctrine of three real persons in the Godhead, is a strange and perplexing notion, which we cannot receive; and which is not even inferable from the whole contents of the Book of God!... What upon this fundamental subject were the views of Dr. W.? Certainly not those of Christianity. They might be those of a slightly modified Arianism, but not less gross or erroneous than those of the Alexandrian presbyter. The scheme of both was really a form of the old Oriental Gnosticism. The superangelic spirit of Arius and Watts was but an AEon of the Gnostics. The scheme of W. may be Gnosticism, but Christianity it is not. We understand his scheme as did Bradbury, Doddridge, Edwards, and, perhaps, as every one understands him who has attentively read his works. Why then be specially reproached for understanding what they understood, and for saying what they said? That these vagaries of the Dr. were neither the fruits of youthful indiscretion, nor of the infirmities of advanced years, he assures us himself. In the preface to his "Useful Questions," he certifies his readers that "These papers are the product of that part of his life, when his powers of mind and body were in full vigour." That he abandoned them at a late period of his life, it would be grateful to be assured of, but of the fact no evidence has been given. The well meant attempt of Mr. Toplady to prove it, it is well known, was a failure. And his permission of the continuance of the orthodox phraseology of his poetry will not do it. The Dr_s. correspondence with Mr. Martin Tomkins, an anti-trinitarian, will explain why he did not alter, as he wished to do, the sentiments of his religious poetry. The language of poetry is no certain index of the principles of the poet. The modern Transcendentalist is often poetic in his theology, and in an evangelical strain he can take the language of Rutherford, and Owen, and Edwards, and talk of a close walk with God, and of intimate communion with him. The pantheism of transcendentalists allows them thus to speak a very spiritual language: while they may mean no more than their exposure to a July sun or a December frost, to a gentle shower or a storm of hail. The poetry of fancy will not do away the heresy of prose. This brings to mind a remarkable coincidence. Bardesanes of Edessa, of the second century, and Watts of Southampton; of the eighteenth century, were both distinguished for their advocacy of error, and both were poets, and are the only poets, as far as recollected, who attempted an imitation of the book of Psalms, each in a book of 150 hymns. If history is to be credited, the Gnostic, as a poet, was not inferior to him of Southampton.
Beware
innovators in worship: their other heresies are never far behind! This book is extracted from the appendix of

The Suppressed
Truth About the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln (c. 1922).
McCarty was an ex-Romanist turned Freemason, thus we are noting right up front
that this is not a Christian book and should be read with extreme care (for
much that is evil is mixed in with the useful information the book contains).
We are making this book available because it contains hard to find research and
documentation of the intrigues that are regularly practiced by Papists and
Jesuits alike, in their quest for world domination (corroborating the
statements of other famous ex-Romanists like the ex-Priest turned Presbyterian,
Charles Chiniquy -- who was a friend of Abraham Lincoln (cf. Chiniquy's Fifty
Years In the Church of Rome, chapter 61, [$19.97 P, $34.00 HP]).
McCarty's book demonstrates that Rome was behind Lincoln's assassination, as
well as chronicling other assassinations and assassination attempts on American
Presidents in which Rome was involved. It also contains a copy of the wicked
Jesuit Oath and much else that implicates both Rome and the Jesuits for the
ecclesiastical Antichrists they are. Noteworthy in this regard is the following
statement from the author's introduction,
I feel safe in stating that nowhere else can be found in one book the connected presentation of the story leading up to the death of Abraham Lincoln, which was instigated by the "Black" pope, the general of the Jesuit Order, camouflaged by the "White" pope, Pius IXth, aided and abetted and financed by other "Divine Righters" of Europe, and finally consummated by the Roman Hierarchy and their paid agents in this country and French Canada on "Good Friday" night, April 14th, 1865, at Ford's Theatre, Washington, D.C. I am convinced that if this knowledge can be given adequate distribution and placed in possession of the boys and girls of the public elementary schools, for whom it is especially designed to reach, that the wicked boast of the Jesuits and their lay agents, the Knights of Columbus, to "MAKE AMERICA CATHOLIC" can never be accomplished.
Also demonstrates
that "from the earliest times the Roman Church advocated human
slavery," which "in short, was a basis for the wealth of the
Papacy" (p. 71). 255 pages.

The
Apostolic/Reformation Way to Worldwide (Biblical) Church Unity (7 sermons,
1998)
Seven astounding sermons on God's biblically ordained method to fulfill His
command for unity (and the great commission) in the visible church: 1. What Are
Terms of Communion? (2 cassettes); 2. What is Close Communion? (2 cassettes);
3. What is Occasional Hearing (or Occasional Communion)? (3 cassettes). These
truths which have been prominent from Old Testament times to the days of the
Apostles -- and in all great subsequent Reformations and true revivals
(especially during the second Reformation) -- are clearly, simply and
Scripturally presented. These forgotten or ignored doctrines are once again
coming to public notice in the preaching of Greg Price (and the publishing of
classic Covenanter literature), as well as in the contemporary call for a third
Reformation in which the nations of the earth will once again enter into (or
renew) covenant with Christ. As Price points out from Scripture, these truths
will also be well known in the days of millennial glory to come. "And the
LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and
his name one (visibly--RB)" (Zech. 14:9). These sermons give us a
foretaste of the blessings that God will pour out upon His church when she runs
"the way of thy commandments" (Ps. 119:32) and when "the earth
shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea"
(Isa. 11:9)!

cassettes, 1997)
This is the story of the renewal of the National and Solemn League and
Covenant, which took place under the leadership of John Macmillan (cf. The
Cameronian Apostle by Reid) at Auchensaugh, July 24, 1712. Events
leading up to this renewal are especially pertinent, as they expose the Satanic
tactics which often become most useful to the devil in attacking all revivals
and those seeking to return to covenanted attainments. Price notes how
Cromwell's tolerationism opened the floodgates of iniquity and helped pave the
way (though not intended by the covenant breaking Cromwellians) for the tyranny
of Charles II. This set the stage for the corrupted and defective revolution of
1688 and the malignant Revolution church, which left the covenanted Reformation
buried under the debris of William's Erastianism, Prelacy (in England and
Ireland) and the compromised Presbyterianism of the Revolution Church in
Scotland (cf. Clarkson's Plain Reasons for Presbyterians Dissenting from the
Revolution Church of Scotland; this
Revolution church was the root of much modern day Presbyterian defection and
this book still eloquently denounces this defection). The Auchensaugh
Renovation cleared away all the Reformation denying rubbish that had
accumulated from 1649 to 1712, and "being agreeable to the Word of
God" became part of the terms of communion of the Reformed Presbyterian
church on Nov. 3, 1712 (cf. Terms of Ministerial and Christian Communion in the
Reformed Presbyterian Church, point 4 of 6). It is also interesting to note
that at the Lord's Supper (on July 27, 1712) following this covenant renewal,
Macmillan, in "fencing the tables" proclaimed, "I excommunicate
and debar from this Holy Table of the Lord, all devisers, commanders, users, or
approvers, of any religious worship not instituted by God in His Word, all
tolerators and countenancers thereof; and by consequence I debar and
excommunicate from this Holy Table of the Lord, Queen and Parliament, and all
under them, who spread and propagate or tolerate a false and superstitious
worship, ay, and until they repent." Furthermore, concerning those who
opposed the covenants and the work of reformation, Macmillan trumpeted these
faithful words, "I excommunicate and debar all who are opposers of our
covenants and covenanted Reformation, and all that have taken oaths contrary to
our covenants, and such particularly as are takers of the Oath of Abjuration,
whether Ministers or others, until they repent" (Reformed Presbytery, The
Auchensaugh Renovation..., p. 55). Beyond
the fascinating and detailed story of the history and reasons for the
Auchensaugh renovation of the covenants, these studies also clearly and
biblically explain the continuing obligation to renew lawful covenants, makes
application to our day, and demonstrates how covenanting was foundational to
the second Reformation. A fine (and unique) set of tapes defending the
attainments of our covenanted Reformation! For more information see our bound

The Martyr's
Testimony, Roman Catholic Tradition and the Importance of History (1997)
A classic Covenanter sermon on historical testimony (based on Hebrews 12:1),
explaining the differences between the Reformation view (and use) of history
(as a term of communion) and the Roman Catholic and Anabaptist perversions of
Scripture (and their vain human philosophy) on this point. Also exposes the
anti-historical, anti-intellectual, anti-creedal, contradictory nonsense and
heresy espoused (in teaching and practice) throughout most of the visible
church (as to being) today. Moreover, the sections on the martyrs are as moving
as they are encouraging and edifying, demonstrating how the position of the Old
Presbyterian Protestant Dissenters is nothing less than the Apostolic faith!
"Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of
witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily
beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us"
(Heb. 12:1).

Micah 4:1-5 (#9
& #10) Reformation Eschatology, the Millennium and the Victory of Christ's
Kingdom (2 sermons, 1998)
The eschatology of the Reformers (and the Reformation Creeds and Confessions)
defended and explained: exhibiting the prominent place that the victory of
Christ's kingdom (in history) is given in Scripture -- and in the writings of
the best Reformers (from Calvin and Cameron, to Witsius [Dutch] and the
Westminster Divines [British]). Also demonstrates how the millennium (which
Price notes may begin within a generation or two) will include such notable events
as the nations bowing to Christ's Kingship civilly, worldwide unity (based on
truth, Amos 3:3) in the church, and universal peace in the world. This is hard
to dispute just in light of the text from which these sermons are preached:
But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it. For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever.
If you are
interested in Reformed thought and would like a very encouraging overview of
the classic Protestant position on eschatology, this is likely the best tape
set you will find!

Micah 4:6-8 (#11 & #12) Israel Turns To Christ (2 sermons, 1998)
In 1635 Samuel Rutherford wrote,
O to see the sight, next to Christ's Coming in the clouds, the most joyful! Our elder brethren the Jews and Christ fall upon one another; they will be kind to one another when they meet. O day! O longed for and lovely day-dawn! O sweet Jesus, let me see that sight which will be as life from the dead, thee and thy ancient people in mutual embraces (from The Letters of Samuel Rutherford as cited in Iain Murray's, The Puritan Hope: Revival and the Interpretation of Prophecy [Banner of Truth, 1984, p. 98]).
Price here sets
forth the classic Reformation position on the restoration of the Jews, a
"system of prophetic interpretation that historically furnished the
Biblical basis for the most glorious future imaginable for the Jews!" (Reg
Barrow, "Publisher's Preface" in Hal Lindsey and the Restoration
of the Jews).

What Are Terms
of Communion? (1998)
Price shows how truth is more foundational than love and that biblical
love is always built on truth -- or else
it is not the love which God commands (John 14:15-24). This sermon is based on
1 Cor. 1:10, "Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among
you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same
judgment." It covers the three-fold purpose for terms of communion, the
biblical testimony for terms of communion and an appeal for terms of communion.
We see here that all churches have terms of communion (whether explicit or
implicit) and that these terms of communion justify each denominations' (or
congregations') separate existence from other denominations or congregations.
However, it is also pointed out that the present state of the visible church is
in direct opposition to many of God commands for visible unity (based on
truth). This is a grievous situation which stirs God to wrath and gives us an
example of God's judgement upon the church. This sermon seeks to remove this
cause of God's wrath by pressing the need for faithful obedience in regard to
biblical unity (which will only be accomplished as the churches agree together
on Scriptural terms of communion, Amos 3:3). Examples from Apostolic teaching
and from the practice of the best Reformed churches of the past are used to
emphasize the critical nature of this teaching. Interestingly, Price also shows
(from Christ's high priestly prayer in John 17) that until the church comes to
a visible unity (based on common, faithful terms of communion) the massive
evangelism of Jews (Romans 11) and Gentiles (Ezek. 47) predicted in Scripture
will not take place. This makes understanding and practising these truths of
extreme importance -- while exposing much of the unbiblical evangelism that
takes place today. If you love the purity and peace of Christ's church and/or
long to see the masses of unevangelized humanity come to Christ, this is
exactly the teaching that will help you to do your own part in bringing about
this glorious end. These are the first two sermons in the series "The
Apostolic/Reformation Way to Worldwide (Biblical) Church Unity."

What is Close
Communion? (2 cassettes, 1998)
Explains and defends the Apostolic teaching and practice concerning the Lord's
Supper (based on and found in Scripture). Demonstrates how this was also
classic Reformation practice, written into the best Reformed confessions,
covenants and Acts of General Assemblies. Moreover, Calvin and many other
individual leaders of Reformation are shown to have upheld this position. Price
also shows how close communion exhibits Christian love and is one of the great
means of grace to bring visible unity to the Church of Jesus Christ. This is
classic Reformed teaching that is misunderstood, much maligned and even
forgotten in our day. It is also rarely preached, so here you have a rare audio
treat in which you may taste of the old Covenanted and Reformed ways from a
contemporary preacher. These are two sermons from the series "The
Apostolic/Reformation Way to Worldwide (Biblical) Church Unity."

What is
Occasional Hearing? (3 cassettes, 1998)
Occasional hearing is the sinful practice, denounced in Scripture and by the
best Reformers, of attending upon the public ministries of unfaithful
ministers. As Price points out, without faithfulness in this area, the visible
church will be filled with disunity, confusion and eventually apostasy. David
Steele echoes this much needed warning, writing,
Finally, that we may trace the streams to their fountain, of which the "flock of slaughter" are tempted to drink when "fouled by the feet of shepherds" unfaithful to the Chief Shepherd, we believe that the (fons et origo omnium nostrorum malorum) -- the fountain and origin of all our sinful departures from the Covenanted Work of Reformation -- will be found in the practice of what is well, too well, marked in our history, and commonly called "Occasional Hearing." Can any person give a reason why he should not hear constantly where he can hear occasionally? Or can any one, at the same time, testify against a church for unfaithfulness, and wait upon its ministry, without evident inconsistency and neutralizing his testimony? Will he succeed in recovering backsliders by following them in their backsliding course? We distinguish here between such as are advancing and those who are retrograding, as our witnessing fathers always did, and towards which parties our deportment ought to be different. To those advancing we extend a helping hand, but from those declining we are commanded to "turn away" (1 Tim. 3:1-5). If I may hear a minister in his pulpit in another fellowship, why may I not in my own pulpit? Then exchange of pulpits necessarily follows, invitation to a seat in church courts, and then open communion! -- and all sanctioned and sanctified by the euphonious phrase, "Christian courtesy"! But how will Christ look upon such motley multitudes? Can they bury his blood-sealed truth and conceal their hypocrisy under "good words and fair speeches" from "His eyes, like unto a flame of fire?" Impossible. But we ought to "have the mind of Christ." (l Cor. 2:16). To us the logical connection of the consecutive steps above merely noted is quite obvious. The inevitable tendency of occasional hearing and its ultimate issue is open communion, -- the overthrow of all creeds, confessions and testimonies; all Subordinate Standards and final apostasy. (A Short Vindication of Our Covenanted Reformation, pp. 49-50, 1879, emphases added)
It is unlikely that you will hear these Apostolic/Reformed
truths preached in many other places (if at all). If you are serious about keeping
the Apostolic command, "Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause
divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and
avoid them" (Rom. 16:17), this series is must listening! These are three
sermons from the series "The Apostolic/Reformation Way to Worldwide
(Biblical) Church Unity."

Reformation Principles Exhibited (1806-07)
Although this document was unfaithfully adopted by the RPCNA (when they
decried faithful historical testimony as an article of faith in the preface),
this book still contains much useful doctrinal and historical information. Part
one is "A Brief Historical View of the Church, As a Visible Society in
Covenant with God. In Two Books. The First Exhibiting the Church Universal; and
the Second the Reformed Presbyterian Church." Part two contains the
"Declaration and Testimony of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in America
(RPCNA)." Furthermore, notwithstanding the unfaithfulness of the adopting
body, Reformation Principles Exhibited
testifies to real attainments. Examples include testifying against the immoral
U.S. constitution, against jury duty, against the use of the elective franchise
(voting) and against swearing an oath of allegiance under this immoral
constitution. Close communion is upheld and occasional hearing is denounced as
a sinful, schismatic practice. Interestingly, this earlier edition can be compared
with later editions to exhibit the continuing defection of the RPCNA -- even
from what was good (and part of her own terms of communion) in her own earlier
standards. For example, in part two, chapter 21, point 5, "Of Church
Fellowship," we read,
We therefore condemn the following errors, and testify against all who maintain them: ... 5. That it is lawful for the Church to be without any terms of communion. 6. That any person may be admitted to communion, who opposes any of the terms of Church fellowship. 7. That occasional communion may be extended to persons who should not be received to constant fellowship (p. 75).
Also,
We therefore condemn the following errors, and testify against all who maintain them: ... 1. That the Bible is the only proper testimony of the church (which takes into account that the Bible is the only divine testimony, but also recognizes human testimony, agreeable to Scripture, as binding [or else why preach, for example, if no one is bound to obey any human testimony, even if the human testimony is agreeable to the divine testimony found in the Bible? Cf. Various places in Samuel Rutherford's Due Right of Presbyteries and A Free Disputation Against Pretended Liberty of Conscience for further explanation]--RB). 2. That a Christian is under no obligation to follow Christ's witnesses in their faithful contendings. 3. That it is lawful, in order to enlarge the church, to open a wider door of communion, by declining from a more pointed testimony, to one which is more loose and general. (p. 120, part 2, emphases added).
How sad that these faithful testimonies are no longer the upheld (as points
of discipline) in the modern RPCNA. 260 pages.

The Bruised Reed
(1630, 1998)
"'Our books may come to be seen where ourselves shall never be heard.
These may preach where the author cannot, and (which is more) when he is not.'
This prediction by one of the great Puritans has had many fulfillments. An
ungodly Welsh clergyman, shopping at a fair in the eighteenth century, bought
an article which happened to be wrapped in a page torn from an old Puritan
folio. The reading of that one page led to his sound conversion. As Luther
said, 'Satan hates the use of pens." and never were pens more powerfully
wielded in the cause of God than by the Puritan divines of the seventeenth
century. Nor have their books outlived their usefulness. Although the original
volumes are worn with age, the truths found in them are as fresh as the new
formats in which they are now appearing. There is no better introduction to the
Puritans than the writings of Richard Sibbes, who is, in many ways a typical Puritan.
'Sibbes never wastes the student's time,' wrote C.H. Sprugeon, 'he scatters
pearls and diamonds with both hands.' ... Since its first publication in 1630, The
Bruised Reed has been remarkably fruitful as a source of spiritual
help and comfort. Richard Baxter records: ' A poor pedlar came to the door...
and my father bought of him Sibb's Bruised Reed... It suited my state... and gave me a livelier apprehension of the
mystery of redemption and how much I was beholden to Jesus Christ... Without
any means but books was God pleased to resolve me to himself.' Such testimonies
could be multiplied. Speaking of the preacher's need to suit his reading to the
varying conditions he finds within, Dr Martyn Llyod-Jones says in his Preaching
and Preachers:
You will find, I think, in general that the Puritans are almost invariably helpful... I shall never cease to be grateful to one of them called Richard Sibbes who was balm to my soul at a period in my life when I was overworked and badly overtired, and therefore subject in an unusual manner to the onslaughts of the devil. In that state and condition... what you need is some gently, tender treatment for your soul. I found at that time that Richard Sibbes, who was known in London in the early seventeenth century as 'the heavenly Doctor Sibbes', was an unfailing remedy. His books The Bruised Reed and The Soul's Conflict quieted, soothed, comforted, encouraged and healed me.
. Some of the
language and punctuation of the earlier edition have been modernized and
headings have been introduced with the intention of making the work more
accessible to present-day readers" (from the "Publishers'

The Day of
Judgement (Forthcoming)
This sobering message (based on 2 Cor. 5:10), is read by elder Lyndon Dohms
(1998) and was originally preached circa 1678 in the parish of Cathcart. It is
taken from A Collection of Very Valuable Sermons Preached On Several
Subjects and In Divers Places in the Time of the Late Persecution
($4.48 P, $14.00 HP) collected by John Howie (1780 edition). It is excellent
for use as an evangelistic tool and/or to spur Christians on to greater
sanctification and zeal. Hammers home the idea encapsulized in the following
rhyme: "Only one life -- it will soon be past, only what is done for
Christ will last." Also helps one to live their life in the light of the
great day of judgement, when we will all stand before God, "For we must
all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the
things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or
bad" (2 Cor. 5:10). This John Welch was "a Covenanting
field-preacher. The grandson of John Welsh of Ayr and a great-grandson of John
Knox... in 1647 he gathered as many as ten thousand hearers... he refused to
hold meetings in the parishes of those ministers who had accepted the
Indulgence. In spite of his reputation, the frequency, duration and public
nature of his preaching, and a large price on his head, Welsh was never apprehended
and retiring to London after Bothwell Bridge, died in peace" (Lachman in
the Dictionary of Scottish Church History & Theology, p. 861 [$95.96, Hardcover]).

The Economy of the Covenants Between God and Man Comprehending a Complete Body of Divinity (1822).
"The sale of Witsius' Economy of the Covenants, increases among my friends. The translation is very
just, and the excellency of the work merits a place in every Christian's
library; I shall do my utmost to recommend it at all times, and on all proper
occasions. No pious person on earth can forbear reading the 3d book without
wonder, rapture, and devotion. It exceeds all commendation: Hervey might well
say, "I would not scruple to risk all my reputation upon the merits of
this performance." For my own part, I am not ashamed, nor afraid of any
scorn and ridicule, that may be poured on me from any quarter, whilst I
constantly aver, that the work has not its equal in the world" (Extract of
a Letter from a Minister in the Country to the Publisher).
Greg Price (GLP) has also provided the following:
Herman Witsius (1636-1708) was
one of the most notable Dutch theologians of the sixteenth and seventeenth
centuries. His influence theologically was felt both at home and abroad.
Witsius also excelled as a friend and supporter of the cause of the downtrodden
and persecuted Covenanters (as represented by Cameron, Cargill, and Renwick).
He was particularly instrumental in the ordination of Mr. James Renwick (who was
ordained by the Classis of Groningen):
Mr. James Renwick was now
ordained by the Classis of Groningen. He was a man of remarkable piety, and
recommended himself exceedingly to these godly divines of the Church of Holland
by his unwavering faithfulness.
He explained to them his
principles, and bore an explicit testimony against the remaining corruptions of
the Belgic Church. He refused ordination at Embden, where it was first offered
to him, because the ministry of that place had embraced the Cocceian errors
[Footnote: "The Cocceians consider the historical part of the Old
Testament as typical of the new dispensation. The ceremonial law they view as a
punishment inflicted on the Jews for their transgressions, particularly for
having worshipped the golden calf. They deny the morality of the fourth
commandment."]. Even at Groningen, he would on no account subscribe the
constitution and catechism of the Dutch Church. Sensible of the justness of his
animadversions [i.e. criticisms--GLP], and impressed with the solemnity and
integrity which appeared in whatever he said, these godly ministers declared it
was the Lord's cause, and although all the powers on earth should resent it,
they would ordain to the holy ministry this eminently pious youth.
He subscribed, in the presence of
the Classis, the confession and standards agreed upon by the assembly at
Westminster, and he was ordained, with the imposition of hands, a minister of
the gospel of Christ, for the Reformed Presbyterian Church, now suffering in
Scotland. For this remarkable condescension in the Church of Holland, the
Scottish covenanters are obliged to the pious exertions of Sir Robert Hamilton,
as the instrument employed by God to assist Mr. Renwick in convincing these
pious divines of the superior purity of the covenanted Church of Scotland.
*Professor Witsius*, professor Mark, and Mr. Brakel, distinguished themselves
as the friends of the covenanters (Reformation Principles Exhibited, The Reformed Presbyterian Church In The United
States Of America, 1807, pp. 85-87, emphases added).
Professor Berkhof has placed
Witsius amongst the most notable Dutch divines who embraced the Postmillennial
position in distinction from the Premillennial and Amillennial positions.
During the sixteenth and
seventeenth centuries several Reformed theologians in the Netherlands taught a
form of Chiliasm which would now be called Postmillennialism. Among them were
such well-known men as Coccejus [as noted above, Cocceius embraced certain
errors against which faithful Reformed Presbyterians have and continue to
testify--GLP], Alting, the two Vitringas, d'Outrein, Witsius, Hoornbeek,
Koelman, and Brakel, of which some regarded the millennium as belonging to the
past, others thought of it as present, and still others looked for it in the
future [among this latter group was Witsius--GLP]. The majority expected it
toward the end of the world, just before the second coming of Christ. These men
rejected the two leading ideas of the Premillennarians, namely, that Christ
will return physically *to reign on earth for a thousand years, and that the
saints will be raised up at His coming, and will then reign with him in the
millennial kingdom. [They also rejected the main idea of the Amillennarians, namely,
that the saints millennial reign is limited in its scope to that of either a
heavenly reign with Christ or a spiritual reign of Christ within the believer's
heart. To the contrary, these Dutch Postmillennarians shared in common the
biblical hope that the Spirit and the gospel in the last days would produce an
extended period of time in which Antichrist would be destroyed, all of Israel
called, the fulness of the Gentiles brought in i.e. a vast majority of the
nations of the world in their national capacity brought to Christ, and as a
result universal peace exhibited between the nations of the world--GLP]. While
the representations differed in some details, the prevailing view was that the
gospel, which will gradually spread through the whole world, will in the end
become immeasurably more effective than it is at present, and will usher in a
period of rich spiritual blessings for the Church of Jesus Christ, a golden
age, in which the Jews will also share in the blessings of the gospel in an
unprecedented manner (Systematic Theology,
L.Berkhof,[1941] 1976, p.716).
In the very words of Witsius in
his "Dedication" to _The Economy Of The Covenants_, we find this
postmillennial hope concerning the prosperity of the gospel in the last days
burning in his breast:
May that day, which is the ardent
prayer of so many pious persons, at length appear, when all names of
distinction [i.e. ecclesiastical differences amongst Churches--GLP] being taken
out of the way, and buried in everlasting oblivion, the whole Christian world,
from the rising to the setting sun, may with one heart and one mouth, worship
and praise one God, and, as it is in the prophecy of Zechariah [Zechariah
14:9--GLP], Jehovah may be one, and his name one in all the earth [God's name
is that by which He makes Himself known to man according to Westminster's
Shorter Catechism #55. Thus, in the millennial period prior to Christ's second
coming the Church throughout the world will embrace and profess God's name by
means of a uniformity in one doctrine, one worship, one church government, and
all securely bound together by one covenant obliging not only the Churches, but
also Nations of the world--GLP]. As this certainly ought to be the earnest
prayer of all Christians, in an especial manner it ought to be the endeavour of
those to whom Jesus, the king, both of truth and peace, has committed the
office of preaching the gospel (The Economy Of The Covenants, Witsius, [1693] 1990, 1:14).
Finally, I submit that where the
gospel is received in faith and love and practiced in the lives of those who so
receive it, its visible effects are always realized (whether in individuals,
families, churches, and nations). The effects of the gospel cannot be hidden
under a bushel. The work of the gospel cannot help but change not only
individuals, but even nations that have submitted themselves to Christ. Micah
4:3,4 describes a period of time in the last days when neither a few
individuals or a few nations will submit themselves to Christ's rule, but an
unprecedented time in history when "many nations" in their national
capacity will join with one another in covenant to submit themselves to the
governance of Christ. For these are not simply isolated individual people
throughout the world who beat their swords into plowshares and their spears
into pruning hooks, but entire nations (in their national capacity) who do so.
Furthermore, it is not simply one or two nations that learn war no more, but
many nations. What a glorious prospect: universal peace due not to the
meritorious works of men, nor due to the social engineering and political
alliances of sinful men, but due to the powerful and glorious gospel of Jesus
Christ which alone (by the grace of God) can establish amity between
individuals and nations that are at enmity.

What Will You Leave Your Children? by Greg Barrow (.25)
The Covenanted Reformation Defended Against Contemporary Schismatics (1998)
The title continues: "A Response and Antidote Primarily to the
Neopresbyterian Malignancy and Misrepresentations, and the Manufactured
"Steelite" Controversy, Found in Richard Bacon's A Defense
Departed; With a Refutation of Bacon's
Independency, Popery, Arminianism, Anabaptism and Various Other Heresies
(Including an Exhibition of His Opposition to Scripture and the Covenanted
Reformation, in General; and His Opposition to John Calvin, John Knox, the
General Assembly of the Church of Scotland [Especially 1638-1649], Samuel
Rutherford, George Gillespie, the Testimony of the Covenanter Martyrs, the
Reformed Presbytery, the Puritan Reformed Church of Edmonton and a Host of
Other Prominent Reformers from Past Generations, in Particular) -- With Copious
Notes on Mr. Bacon's Backsliding and His Blackening of the Blue Banner; as Well
as Various Replies to Other Modern Malignants."
Though set in the context of a debate with one individual, this book
addresses a number of specific problems which plague the Presbyterian and
Reformed churches of our day in general. As Reg Barrow notes in the
"Publisher's Preface,"
I believe that there is one primary answer to the question of what makes The Covenanted Reformation Defended uniquely useful and it is this: it exposes the many differences between what took place during the two previous great Reformations (of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries) -- which were based upon and agreeable to the glorious covenanted Reformations found in the Old Testament -- and what the bulk of the Presbyterian and Reformed churches (corporately), elders (individually), and church members (individually) mistakenly think took place. It conclusively and irrefutably demonstrates that those churches which today call themselves Presbyterian (and even many which claim a more general Reformed heritage) have grievously departed from the Scriptural standards and principles of these previous Spirit led Reformations. This will become progressively (and painfully) clear as the reader witnesses evidence upon evidence of defection from biblically based Reformation attainments (Phil. 3:16) -- and the burying and/or removing of the ancient Reformation landmarks. Ultimately, when the testimony and evidence is weighed in light of Scriptural verities, it is entirely safe to say that the original Reformers would not only have sought negative ecclesiastical sanctions against our modern pseudo-Reformers, but in many cases negative civil sanctions as well.
Larry Birger, in his introduction, also comments,
(Greg) Barrow provides the bridge back to the teachings of our Reformed forefathers, his work serving as a skillful and much needed "Covenanter Primer." His explanations of key (and ill-understood, in our day) doctrines of the Reformation are the clearest I've ever read (this is especially true in regard to his treatment of the visible church and separation, the Lord's Supper and covenanting--RB). His numerous citations of non-Covenanter writers demonstrate that these doctrines are not at all peculiar to Covenanters, and indeed, that they are foundational to Protestantism. That these doctrines are not understood by the pastors and people of our day is a heartbreaking commentary on how far we "Protestants" have fallen from the Protestant Reformation.
In short, if you want a book which will help
you to understand the Reformation view of numerous important, foundational
Scriptural doctrines and their application to the present day; written in an
easy-to-read and easy-to-understand format; uncovering many rare Reformation
source documents (from the Westminster Assembly's advice to the English
Parliament on the Lord's Supper to the official records of Calvin's Covenanting
in Geneva), this is an unsurpassed work that should not be missed. 318 pages, 8.5" X 11". (This book is

Distinctive
Principles of the Covenanters (1892)
Covers five major topics: "The Church Christ's Witness;" "The
True Church: Our Terms of Communion;" "The Book of Psalms, The
Church's Manual of Praise;" "Our Political Dissent, or Why
Covenanters Deny Themselves Political Privileges;" "The State and
Secret Societies." Each of these sections are broken down into numerous
easy reading subsection, making this an interesting and very useful
introduction to the distinctive principles that grew out of the second or
covenanted Reformation. 56 pages.

I John 4:7 (#18)
Worldwide Calvinistic Unity and Loving One Another (1997)
An amazing sermon which exposes all unity which is not based on truth (e.g. in
groups like Promise Keepers) as necessarily based on lies -- and as treason
against King Jesus! Defends the Reformation view of visible and covenanted
unity and uniformity from Scripture, and from pertinent quotes from Calvin
(during first Reformation), Henderson (the second Reformation architect of the
Solemn League and Covenant), and others. Exhibits how Reformed teaching has
always viewed the real schismatics (whether in the majority or minority) as
those who press "independent denominationalism" and as those who
tolerate a sinful multiformity -- against the national establishment of the one
true Reformed religion. Calvin and the Geneva Presbytery of his day even
counseled excommunication and exile for those that would not swear to their
"covenanted uniformity" in upholding the Geneva Confession of 1536
(cf. Calvin, Covenanting and Close Communion by Reg Barrow). Moreover, Price shows how our scandalous modern
multiformists (which includes the leaders of most so-called "conservative
Presbyterian" denominations today) teach and act in direct opposition to
Christ's high priestly prayer in John 17, as well as the high standard of
visible unity that will one day be attained worldwide (as seen in the prophetic
words found in Zechariah 14:9: "And the LORD shall be king over all the
earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one").
Furthermore, the portion of this sermon dealing with loving the brethren is one
of the most convicting practical sections of a contemporary sermon that we have
ever heard. Such preaching is extremely humbling, calculated to exalt Christ
and His truth, and to drive sinful human beings to the throne of grace --
seeking everlasting mercy and forgiveness in the only place that it can truly
be found. In short, Price calls us back to our first love (individually) and to
the biblical attainments of our covenanted forefathers
(corporately). It is unlikely that you will find modern preaching much better
than this.

The Contending
Witness, The Reformation Advocate and The Original Covenanter magazines
The following list of magazines, edited by David Steele, comprise what is
likely the best compilation of Christian periodicals ever amassed under one set
of bindings. Nothing we know of (before or since), authored as magazine
articles related to full-orbed nation shaking biblical Reformation, even comes
close to the consistent quality of writing found in these short works on
various subjects. Steele himself should probably be considered the best
theologian of the nineteenth century, and the other contributors to these
magazines were all approaching the same class. A healthy portion of Steele's
writing is found in these magazines, as he only wrote a few other books, so the
reader is encouraged to sample for himself some of the best writing (defending
the Covenanted Reformation) you will find anywhere!

Notes on the
Apocalypse (1870)
In 1779, in their Testimony and Warning Against the Blasphemies and Idolatry
of Popery, the Reformed Presbytery called Durham's commentary on
Revelation, "the best exposition of that book that has yet been
published" (p. 61n). Had they had the privilege of reading Steele's Notes
on the Apocalypse we are quite certain that
they would have given it a similar endorsement. Though written in a different
style than Durham's work, Steele's notes on Revelation may be even more
valuable in many respects -- Steele having taken a more decided position
"in the wilderness." Steele also had the benefit of many more
resources, having written over two centuries later. Steele's aim in writing
this book is made clear in his own words taken from the preface,
As this work is intended for the instruction and edification of the unlearned, rather than for the entertainment of the learned, words of foreign extract are used as seldom as possible. Practical remarks and reflections are rarely introduced; the principal aim being simply to ascertain and present to the reader the mind of the Holy Spirit. How far this object has been accomplished, is of course left to the judgment of the honest inquirer. The reader, however, in forming his judgment of the value of these Notes, may be reminded of that inspired rule in searching the Scriptures,--"Comparing spiritual things with spiritual." To assist him in the application of this divine rule, many chapters and verses are quoted from other parts of the Bible, but especially within the Apocalypse itself; that by concentrating the various rays upon particular texts or symbols, their intrinsic light may be rendered more luminous. Thus the interpretation given, if correct, may be confirmed and illustrated.
Appendices include
a section on, The New Jerusalem, The Antichrist, The Image of the Beast, The
Beast's "deadly wound," The Little Book, The Death of the Witnesses,
The Mark of the Beast, The First Resurrection, The Identity of the Two
Witnesses, Sounding of the Seventh Trumpet and The Title of this Book (i.e. the
Book of Revelation--RB). This work also includes various "animadversions
on the interpretations (of Revelation--RB) of several among the most learned
and approved expositors of Britain and America." Comments on this work
include the four given below, all which were given without the solicitation or
knowledge of the author. The Evangelical Repository notes, "the author
adduces a greater number of Scriptural illustrations than any other writer on
prophecy we ever met with." Hutcheson writes, "I can recommend it to
any person as condensing the best thoughts to be had on the subject."
Brooks says, "I have derived more knowledge of the Apocalypse from this
work than from all other expositions which I have consulted." And finally,
John Cunningham comments, "It is neither a dictionary nor concordance;
neither a confession of faith, nor an encyclopedia, but a thesaurus of
Theology, embodying the characters of all these." Steele dedicated this
work to John Cunningham, author of The Ordinance of Covenanting. 323 pages.

"Hexapla,"
of course, means "six-fold" or "six-columned" As the
section of this book explaining the "Plan of the English Hexapla"
notes, "the term 'Hexapla' was originally applied to the work executed by
Origen in the 3rd century; in which the first column contained the Hebrew Text
of the Old Testament; the second, the Hebrew text in Greek letters; the third,
Aquila's Greek version; the fourth, the translation of Symmachus; the fifth,
the LXX version (i.e. the Septuagint--RB); the sixth, Theodotion's
version." The English Hexapla
offered here contains the six English translations noted in the title, arranged
side by side for easy comparison and reference. Dates for each version used are
as follows: Wiclif (1380), Tyndal (1534), Cranmer (1539), Geneva (1557), Rheims
(1582), King James Version (1611). Of special interest may be the Geneva 1557
version (from a copy of the first edition), as both Geneva Bibles presently in
print contain later versions (1599 and 1602) of this text. It should also be
noted that the notes to the Geneva Bible are not included in the English
Hexapla, just the text. The 1611 edition of
the KJV will also be of value to those who would like to compare it with the
more modern version of this translation. "The notation of the verses has
been inserted in all the translations, for convenience of reference... In
illustration of the utility of the comparison of the various translations, much
that is interesting might be advanced, but which the use of the volume will at
once afford. The varied, although ordinarily equivalent manner in which the
different translators render the same phrase, often throws much light upon the
exact meaning; and when the versions vary in sense, the enquiry suggested with
reference to the Original cannot fail to afford profit while it interests"
("Plan of the English Hexapla," pp. 161-162). Additionally this English
Hexapla also includes "The original
Greek text after Scholz with the various readings of the Textus Receptus and
the principal Constantinopolitan and Alexanderine manuscripts, and a complete
collation of Scholz's text with Griesbach's edition of 1805... The Greek text
has been placed in the upper part of each page, for the purpose of facilitating
the comparison of the versions with the Original, so desirable when they vary
in rendering any passage." This is all preceeded by a detailed and
annotated 160 page historical account of the English translations.
