(Doug) Wilson's absurd comments:
"I want to begin by saying that when we first start talking about the
objectivity of the covenant and it starts to sink in what we are saying. You
mean that you are saying that lesbian Eskimo bishop lady is a Christian? She is not a Buddhist, she is not a
Muslim, yes, in the New Testament sense, she is a New Testament Christian" (Doug Wilson, "The Curses of
the New Covenant," tape 7, as excerpted from Brian Schwertley's "A Defense of Reformed Orthodoxy

SCRIPTURE ON WORKS AND GRACE
Rom. 4:1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as
pertaining to the flesh, hath found?
Rom. 4:2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to
glory; but not before God.
Rom. 4:3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it
was counted unto him for righteousness.
Rom. 4:4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of
grace, but of debt.
Rom. 4:5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that
justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
Rom. 4:6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man,
unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
Rom. 4:7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and
whose sins are covered.

The "Auburn Four"
consist of Steve Wilkins, Steve Schlissel, John Barach and Doug Wilson. The
heretical teachings these men now promote attack foundational truths found in
Scripture regarding justification,
worship, etc. Their heresies not only repudiate many great biblical truths
bought back to light by the Holy Spirit during past Reformations, but their
false teaching leads directly back to Rome and the Papacy (Antichrist, see http://www.swrb.com/newslett/FREEBOOK/eschatol.htm ). Listen for yourself and warn your
friends about the dangerous errors that are exposed in the FREE MP3s and etext

Saul in the Cave of Adullam: A
Testimony Against the Fashionable Sub-Calvinism of Doug Wilson (Editor of Credenda/Agenda Magazine); and, for Classical
Protestantism and the Attainments of the Second Reformation by Reg Barrow
Doug Wilson and others at Credenda/Agenda used their magazine to publicly attack and slander Reg
Barrow (President of Still Waters Revival Books) in a column that they call the
"Cave of Adullam." This invective was Credenda's response to Barrow's comments on Knox
Ring (where Barrow noted that John Calvin would have excommunicated John Frame for
the apostasy that he manifests in his new book on worship). Numerous private
attempts were unsuccessfully made (by Barrow and others) to call Wilson to
repentance for this slander. Ultimately, charges for violation of the ninth
commandment were brought (in accord with Matt. 18:15-17) against Wilson by
Barrow. This book recounts the salient points of the controversy (and the
Matthew 18 proceedings) between Wilson and Barrow -- in their actual email
debates! Also included is Barrow's demonstration of why Calvin would have
excommunicated Frame and Greg Price's Testimony Against The Unfounded
Charges of Anabaptism. These
debates are a classic example of the differences that exist today between
paleopresbyterians (Barrow) and neopresbyterians (Wilson). Wilson's charges against Barrow, of
Anabaptism, separatism, etc. are all refuted under a mountain of quotations
from Reformation source documents. Barrow's refutations of Wilson's spurious
charges bring to light many aspects of Reformation thought that have been lost
or forgotten in our day. Besides the initial controversy (over Frame and
worship) and the restoration process (set forth in Matthew 18:15-17), this book
should be of special interest to all of those who love the "old
paths" of truth -- trod by our forefathers in the Reformed faith -- for
some of the most pressing issues of our day (regarding the individual, church
and state) are addressed herein. Classic statements, cited by Barrow, not only
exhibit the wisdom which God granted the best Reformers of both the first and
second Reformations, but also specifically demonstrate how Wilson and many
other modern Protestants actually reject the Reformation at many points (all their protests not withstanding).
"And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou
shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called,
The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in" (Isa.
58:12). This item is also available as a bound photocopy for $3.98 (US funds).

A Defense of Reformed Orthodoxy
Against the Romanizing Doctrines of the New Auburn Theology by Brian Schwertley (OFFSITE)
"At the 2002 Auburn Avenue Pastor's Conference four speakers--John Barach,
Doug Wilson, Steve
Schlissel and Steve Wilkins -- articulated what they themselves called a new
paradigm in theology. These men set forth this new paradigm as an answer to
their own perceived problems within Reformed theology as well as the inadequate
manner in which they believe Reformed interpreters and theologians have dealt
with "problem" passages in Scripture. The main theme of the
conference centered on a new way to view the covenant which they referred to as
"the objectivity of the covenant." In their lectures a number of
traditional, confessional Reformed doctrines were rejected and replaced by the
novel ideas of the speakers.
Some of the standard Reformed doctrines that were rejected or redefined were:
the covenant of works, the distinction between the visible and invisible
church, the nature of baptism (especially relating to efficacy), the doctrine
of perseverance (we are repeatedly told that real believers can fall away), the
doctrine of the atonement (the speakers repeatedly separate the ground of
salvation from its application in an Arminian manner), justification
(sometimes faith is defined in a Romish manner as an obedient or working faith
[the Norman Shepherd heresy], at other times perseverance is defined in a
manner that makes it either a partial ground of salvation or co-instrument in
justification), and assurance (The main answer to problems of assurance [we are
told] is baptismal regeneration: "Look to your baptism because you were
really saved and united to Christ in your baptism.") Because the new
paradigm set forth by the Auburn theologians is a radical departure from the
Reformed faith and is heretical in many areas, we will briefly examine some of
the most perverse areas of their teaching. Not every area will be considered, for that would require a
book-length response. Further, some areas such as justification have already
been discussed at length. (For example, many excellent articles have been
written refuting Norman Shepherd's heretical view of justification. As far as
this author can tell the Auburn doctrine of justification is essentially the
same as Shepherd's. In fact, Shepherd was originally scheduled to speak at the
Auburn conference but was replaced by John Barach because he could not attend.)
Therefore, this author will not spend time analyzing their view of this topic.
One area that will receive a great deal of attention is the Reformed doctrine
of the atonement. The Auburn teaching is a repudiation of the classic Reformed
formulation of this doctrine. It is our hope and prayer that this brief
analysis of their perverse doctrines will inoculate Reformed believers against
the Romanizing paradigm of the Auburn four… Reformed believers need to be
made aware that the Auburn paradigm is a radical departure from the Reformed
faith. It is not a refining of Reformed doctrine but rather a rejection of
confessional orthodoxy in favor of sacramentalist, Arminian and Romanizing
concepts. It is heretical because it strikes at the very heart of Reformed
theology--the doctrines of the atonement and justification
by faith alone. May God protect his precious church from this vile
theological poison,"
writes Brian Schwertley.
BOOK
REVIEW: "Reformed" is Not Enough
by Douglas Wilson reviewed by Drs. Matthew McMahon at "A Puritan's
Mind."
This
extensive book review contains much more proof that Doug Wilson is not only not
Reformed (using the
confessional and historic meaning of the word), but that he is also ignorant of
many classic Reformation doctrines. Drs. McMahon writes,
Innovation
and originality in theology are the parents of all heresy. Douglas Wilson in
his book, "Reformed" is Not Enough demonstrates this subtly but
effectively. To the untrained eye his arguments may sound cohesive, helpful and
clarifying. To the trained eye his arguments are heretical, and his work
demonstrates his theological and historical ignorance.
It is
this writer's opinion that Wilson has crossed the line from error to heresy
based on conceptions propagated at the 2002 Auburn Avenue Pastor's Conference
with three others--John Barach, Steve Schlissel and Steve Wilkins, as well as
clarifying marks made here in his new book. These four men have been
"labeled" the Auburn Four as a result of that conference. Wilson
admits in his foreword that he began writing this book before the accusations
to him and his colleagues came about by the Covenant Presbytery of the RPCUS in
June of 2002 (cf. http://www.rpcus.com/Resolutions.pdf -- RB). So he has included thoughts about
the clarification of his opinion in later chapter (which happen to be some of
the most blatant denials of orthodox doctrine in the book.) rather than earlier
ones.

The Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC) Cover-up by Paul M. Elliott
The reader would expect a 70,000-word Report “concerning the doctrine of justification and other related doctrines” to be a comprehensive discussion of the issues. However, the Justification Study Committee Report leaves critical issues untouched. It leaves much unsaid that must be said – inconvenient facts that the OPC’s leadership has historically denied. Part of the Committee’s mandate was to address “other related doctrines” beyond the Federal Vision and New Perspective on Paul, but the Committee has failed to do this. It does not address the false teachings and false teachers that have most seriously undermined the OPC itself.
Thus, the Report continues the conspiracy of silence that has prevailed in the OPC for three decades. It leaves the erroneous impression that the serious doctrinal problems are outside the denomination, not within it. The Report gives false comfort to those who think the OPC is still a bastion of Biblical orthodoxy. On the contrary, the Report, and the 2006 General Assembly’s commendation of it, both maintain the OPC as a safe haven for those who teach error.
Men within the OPC,
including at least one member of the Committee itself, teach heresy regarding
the Gospel and many other fundamentals of the faith. Even the men on the
Committee who have their personal doctrine right have facilitated the teaching
of false doctrines by others for decades. Some will reject this as a blanket,
indiscriminate indictment. But it is the truth, because those men have failed
to speak out publicly against the errorists among them. Not one of the
ministers appointed to this Committee has demanded, at any time, that the
denomination rid itself of the cancer of neo-liberalism. And now the Committee
– a coalition of conservatives plus neo-liberals and those who cooperate with
them – has produced a “consensus report” continuing the conspiracy of silence.
Each member of the Committee, regardless of his personal doctrinal position,
has been and continues to be part of the problem, not part of the solution...
Just as the Report ignores the cancerous spread of false teaching within the
OPC itself, it does not discuss the root causes of the OPC’s crisis... continued

The
Richard Gaffin Question (OFFSITE)
http://godshammer.wordpress.com/2008/07/11/the-gaffin-question/
"Some final questions: How can Gaffin defend Shepherd for thirty years and go undisciplined within the OPC? How can Gaffin by his actions condemn God’s elect who rightfully fought Shepherd/Kinnaird and their teachings go undisciplined within the OPC. Why is the OPC trying to bury the Gaffin/Shepherd/Kinnaird issue. Since when is Gaffin’s writing a new book considered repentance and church discipline? Finally, Why are those who condemn these teachings and these men who shout it from the house tops treated with contempt. What concerns me is the chameleon like nature of false teachers. Remember, ambiguous teaching is false teaching. If a pastor won’t state clearly and unambiguously where he stands and what he believes don’t sit under his teaching!"
Justification by
Faith Alone" by Norman Shepherd, A Review by David H. Linden (OFFSITE)
Reformation & Revival Journal Vol. 11, Number 2, Spring 2002
"We need to
see that his doctrine is not that of the Reformation, the Westminster
Standards, or the Bible. We must guard our pulpits from such teaching. Those
ministers who stand in them should be very frank and open about their views on
these things. I say this because Mr. Shepherd has lately had a growing
influence among ministers in conservative reformed circles. I say again that
his inclusion of our obedience as necessary for our justification is heresy.
Let us beware."

book, now hear the sermon, "What Paul Really Said in Galatians," in which Joe Morecraft exposits
the biblical perspective on Paul. Here Morecraft refutes some of the
heresies of N.T. Wright and the "New Perspective on Paul" movement. In so doing he also exposes some of the
major errors of the Auburn Four (Doug Wilson, Steve Wilkins, Steve Schlissel
and John Barach) on justification,
and the teaching and other teachers of what has come to be known as the Federal
Vision and/or Auburn Avenue Theology.
This sermon also contains some very useful practical aspects of the biblical
teaching of justification by faith alone, through grace alone, by Christ alone.
The only drawbacks in this sermon are the quotes from the man-made hymns of
Charles Wesley (an Arminian) and Isaac Watts (a Unitarian, see the free text at
http://www.covenanter.org/McMaster/Psalmody/psalmapdx.htm#1 and the MP3 series beginning at http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?SID=860531825, as there are certainly many faithful
men that could have been quoted to make the same point regarding the imputation
of Christ's righteousness to the elect through faith alone.

Much good is found in this
lecture, however, regarding separation from corrupt churches (and this would
include any church that holds to the "Auburn Theology" or any church
that refuses to discipline teachers of these heresies), we believe that the
most faithful course of action after separation from a church which lacks
"well being" is to join with a church that possesses "well
being." In this case that would entail joining with the Reformed
Presbytery in North America (RPNA). For information on the RPNA please see http://www.reformedpresbytery.org/ . In this lecture Robbins also makes an
error regarding Rome's baptism (an error which Thornwell also made) which we
believe stems from a lack of knowledge related to classic Reformation
ecclesiology, specifically the Reformers distinction between the
"being" and the "well being" of the visible church. For an
extensive explanation of this truth (along will numerous pertinent quotations
from some of the best Reformers) please see chapter two in Greg Barrow's The

Covenanter Terms of Communion
1 of 19: The Word of God 1/2 by Greg Price
Free MP3 at http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?SID=1210510584
Explains and defends the first
term of communion, which is 'An acknowledgement of the Old and New Testament to
be the Word of God, and the alone infallible rule of faith and practice.'
Covers the attributes of
Scripture, including the necessity, inspiration, authority, sufficiency,
perspicuity, perpetuity, etc. of the Word of God. Also deals with principles of
interpretation (hermeneutics) and how we know that God's Word is His Word, and
thus can be trusted as the absolute, inerrant, infallible and inspired truth.
Touches on higher criticism and
the debate over bible versions, upholding the Textus Receptus (i.e. the
ecclesiastical or received text) and the King James Version.
A fine defense of Sola Scriptura
which also touches on how 'extra-biblical' terms of communion are not only
required by Scripture itself, but are an inescapable necessity.
Price is careful to point out
the difference between the primary, infallible standard of Scripture and those
uninspired subordinate standards, which nevertheless bind the conscience
whenever they say the same thing as Scripture.
A great introduction to God's
Word that comes with our highest recommendation.

In his sermon on the visible and invisible church, Schwertley carefully
analyzes the Reformed doctrine of the church. This sermon proves that the
distinction between the visible and invisible church is biblical and
unavoidable. In this sermon there is some very interesting interaction with
modern speakers such as Doug Wilson who deny this biblical distinction. This
doctrine is very important because its denial has led certain modern heretical
theologians (e.g., the Auburn Four) toward a medieval Romish view of the
church.

I received an email from a
concerned brother that the New Catechism on Infant Inclusion in the Covenant I have posted here may have
"connotation" of the Auburn Four's theology. I want to express a deep
concern here. The Auburn Four's Theology is heretical. If they do not repent of it, they
will be damned for believing it. I
repudiate their "works salvation." The New Catechism I have out,
though, in no way represents or purports the same ideas as the Auburn Four.

LUTHER,
JUSTIFICATION, REFORMATION AND SEPARATION by DAVID STEELE
The weapons, with which the
saints overcame the dragon, were not carnal, but mighty. These, we are told,
were "the blood of the Lamb, and the word of their testimony." They
believed and they taught in opposition to the popular doctrine of good works
and penances, that the righteousness which the law of God requires of a sinner,
is provided by a Surety; that the blood of Christ alone cleanses believers from
the guilt of sin, and thus justifies them in the sight of God. No man ever used
stronger language than Luther in denouncing the supposed efficacy of works, or
in asserting the sovereignty of free grace, in the justification of a sinner.
Indeed it was the deep impression which the doctrine of justification made upon
the hearts of men, and the firm hold which faith took of it, that enabled and
constrained them to forsake the Romish church and to seek and erect a separate
fellowship. This was with them "the word of Christ's patience." Other
doctrines of grace were, of course, connected with this of justification in the
apprehension of the Reformers, but it was the central one. And thus we may
learn, that any doctrine of the Bible, when generally opposed, may lawfully
become a point of testimony; and when openly opposed and practically denied, it
may become a warrantable and imperative ground of separation. In all such
cases, -- and history supplies multitudes of them, -- the declining majority
are truly the schismatics and separatists. The malicious, the indolent and
credulous, however, in all ages have joined in the cry of schism as attaching
to the virtuous minority.

DEBATE on the Meaning of the
Church in Reformation Thought
http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?currSection=sermonsspeaker&sermonID=11250123955
Covers some of the most
important (and often forgotten, in our day) aspects of the Reformation doctrine
of the church, unity and separation (championed by Calvin, Knox, the Covenanted
Presbyterians at the Westminster Assembly, et al.). Includes many citations
from Reformation leaders & confessional statements of the best Reformed
churches. This is chapter 2 in Greg Barrow's The Covenanted Reformation
Defended (free at: http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualnls/misrep2.htm ).
The Following information on N.T. Wright and the "New Perspective on
Paul" heresy has been added below as the Auburn speakers (Doug Wilson,
Steve Wilkins, Steve Schlissel, and John Barach) have clearly been drinking
from this poison well. N.T.
Wright is a liberal heretic, don't be fooled by his fair sounding words. He may
pen phrases like "justification by faith," (as the ecumenical
Romanists do) though never "justification by faith alone," and he denies outright the
biblical (Reformation) understanding of justification by faith alone! Furthermore, as you will find out in
the articles cited below, as well as in the quote by N.T. Wright which follows
(where Wright himself states that he believes there is a
"possibility" that the biblical account of the virgin birth
"might just be true"), this false teacher denies much about Scripture
that our Reformation forefathers faithfully proclaimed -- even those very
truths for which some of our brave Reformation brothers (and sisters) sealed
their testimony with their own blood, as martyrs of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Beware the subtlety of the serpent (2 Cor. 11:3) -- neither the new perspective
on Paul nor the new Auburn theology teaches "the faith which was once
delivered unto the saints" (Jude 3).

Here is some interesting information about N.T. Wright's belief (or,
rather, lack thereof) concerning the virgin birth:
[58]
These are not the only questionable areas in the theology of new perspective
advocates. Wright, for example, does not come out and say he believes in the
virgin birth of Christ but that it is a possibility and that the New Testament
authors believed it: "What if we find that, very early within the movement
that grew up around [Christ], there arose two independent sources claiming that
he had been conceived without a human father? Faced with all of this, a belief
in this God, and this Jesus, may compel us to hold open the possibility that
this account of his conception might just be true" (Wright, Who Was
Jesus?, p. 83). He also states, "One of the best possible answers is that
[Matthew and Luke] very firmly believed it to be true" (Wright, Who Was
Jesus?, p. 84).

Pornography, the Anabaptists, and Doug
Wilson's Civil Antinomianism (1997) by Reg Barrow
(Pointed but irenic, Barrow decisively refutes the view of Doug Wilson (cf.
"Cyberporn: A Case Study" [Credenda/Agenda, vol. 7, no. 5, p. 11]), many modern
Theonomists and the civil libertarians, that the production and distribution of
pornography is not a crime (and thus not subject to negative penal sanctions by
the civil magistrate). Barrow demonstrates that Wilson's view of civil
government (which logically results in such a monstrous conclusion) is actually
a overly strict view of the regulative principle. This
"hyper-regulativism" (denying lawful inferences, or what Samuel
Rutherford calls "logical consequence") is then wrongly applied to
the civil magistrate, rather than to worship (when rightly interpreted). He
also points out the link between Wilson's view and the principles of the
Anabaptists, Libertines and other antiestablishmentarian forces. With an
impressive array of historical citations (primarily John Calvin, George Gillespie,
Samuel Rutherford, and the Westminster Confession of Faith), and a cogent
analysis and application of relevant Scripture passages, Barrow shows
clearly that Wilson's view of civil government "gives birth to
illegitimate offspring in the case of pornography, contradicting as it does
common sense (the light of nature), our reformed fathers in the faith, and the
express commands and approved examples of Scripture. In short, it is anything but the
'classical Protestant' position, and anything but biblical." This item is

The Necessity of Reforming the Church

Calvin
Justification By Faith Alone Through Grace Alone By Christ Alone and Peace
With God 1 of 2 by Charles H. Spurgeon (Romans 5:1)
- SUMMARY: Luther rightly
regarded justification by faith alone as the article of the standing or falling
church. Thus, the devil hates this doctrine and attacks it every chance he
gets. Of late, the attacks on justification by faith alone have been coming
from both inside and outside the Presbyterian and Reformed churches. Spurgeon
here defends the classic biblical (Puritan) teaching in such a way that you
might think that he was refuting some of the modern attacks on this teaching by
false teachers like Norman Shepherd, the Auburn Avenue speakers (Doug
Wilson, Steve Schlissel, John Barach, Steve Wilkins) or other teachers of
heresy like N.T. Wright and the New Perspective on Paul movement (see http://www.swrb.com/newslett/FREEBOOK/DWilson.htm for more resources refuting the
aforementioned false teachers -- as well as the free PDF file containing a DEBATE BETWEEN DOUG WILSON and REG BARROW [president of SWRB]

these reasons and many more this is an important sermon to hear and to pass on

Justification By Faith Alone
Through Grace Alone By Christ Alone and Peace With God 2 of 2 by Charles H.
Spurgeon (on Genesis 15:6)
- SUMMARY: Here Charles Haddon
Spurgeon continues his teaching in accord with Scripture and the original
Westminster Confession of Faith (WCF).
On justification Westminster
Confession of Faith 11:1 states,
Those
whom God effectually calleth, he also freely justifieth: not by infusing
righteousness into them, but by pardoning their sins, and by accounting and
accepting their persons as righteous; not for any thing wrought in them, or
done by them, but for Christ's sake alone; not by imputing faith itself, the
act of believing, or any other evangelical obedience to them, as their
righteousness; but by imputing the obedience and satisfaction of Christ unto
them, they receiving and resting on him and his righteousness by faith; which
faith they have not of themselves, it is the gift of God.

teaching on justification. The complete Westminster Standards (original
wording) are available in the free books file, in searchable format, on all the

by Kevin Reed
("Last year, the present writer reviewed volume 1 of David Calhoun's
history of Princeton Seminary. The first volume of Calhoun's narrative ended at
a pivotal point in the history of Northern Presbyterianism: the reunion of the
Old School and New School Assemblies in 1869. Realizing that a significant part
of Princeton's story (as well as the story of the Northern Presbyterianism) was
yet to be told, I eagerly took up volume two of Calhoun's narrative, shortly
after the book was published. Unfortunately, the second volume, The Majestic
Testimony, is a major
disappointment. Readers who want to know what happened after 1869, in order to
gain an understanding of the demise of Princeton (and Northern Presbyterianism)
will require additional sources beyond Calhoun's second volume. Therefore, we
are presenting readers with a combined book review, in which we will also draw
attention to another important work, Gary North's Crossed Fingers: How the

difference between Protestants and Papists, indicating that the multitude of
churches in our current apostasy are (as to their form or constitution)
daughters of the Roman Catholic whore (Rev. 17:5). Because they have not
followed in the footsteps of the flock (Song 1:8), but instead are walking in
the adulterous ways of their (constitutional) mother, these churches are
schismatic. Birger concludes with 13 Scripture commands to separate from such
denominations who themselves have separated from the company of the

BUCHANAN,
JAMES
The Doctrine of Justification
This book contains an outline of the history of this doctrine in the church
(from the Old Testament to the author's day), as well as a lengthy exposition
of it from Scripture. 514 pages, indexed.
"James
Buchanan's 'Doctrine of Justification' is THE classic work on this cardinal
doctrine by which a church stands or falls. After lucidly covering the
historical development of the doctrine through the Old Testament, the apostolic
age, the scholastic divines, the Reformation and Counter Reformation, and in
the Church of England, Buchanan expounds the doctrine itself by covering the
scriptural meaning of the term, its relation to the law and justice of God, its
relation to the mediatorial work of Christ, its relation to grace and works,
and more. The chapter on justification in relation to the work of the Holy
Spirit is alone worth the price of the book. Throughout, Buchanan systematizes
the doctrine of justification in an orthodox Reformed manner that is fully
reliable, is consistent with all the doctrines of grace, and is still relevant
to the burning issues of our day, such as the New Perspective. A new
introduction by Dr. Gerald Bilkes on the New Perspective is also a great help.
If you can only afford to read one book on justification, read this definitive
work."
-Joel R. Beeke
"Justification is, perhaps surprisingly, perhaps not, a point of
contention within the evangelical, Protestant world in our own day, but so many
evangelical ministers and students lack a knowledge of the historical and
theological content and categories necessary to engage the discussion helpfully.
Buchanan to the rescue. This magisterial nineteenth century treatment remains a
standard. Indeed, you'll be surprised at the present applicability of
Buchanan's assessments. Yes, in the century since Buchanan wrote, we've learned
a lot of helpful, biblical things about the shape and stuff of justification.
But Buchanan cannot be bypassed. Read and learn at the feet of a master."
- Dr. Ligon Duncan
"... a gem! Buchanan's
exposition of justification is, in my opinion, still the best one that has
been done."
- William Shishko
"The Reformation has been declared over by some. Justification by faith
alone is under attack. Confusion abounds on this doctrine upon which the
Christian faith hinges. Therefore, it is indeed most timely that this classic
treatment receive fresh attention. There is no mere theologizing from the
Scotsman, but honest exegetical work with incisive exposition. Pastors,
students, and may I add, seminary professors will benefit greatly by returning
to this marvelous treatment of this gospel doctrine."
- Dr. Nick Willborn
"At the present stage of
the justification debate, Buchanan would be a very wholesome remedy against
unfair representations. He is absolutely masterful on the subject."
- Dr. Roger Nicole
"The doctrine
of justification by faith is like Atlas: it bears a world on its shoulders,
the entire evangelical knowledge of saving grace. The doctrines of election, of
effectual calling, regeneration, and repentance, of adoption, of prayer, of the
church, the ministry, and the sacraments, have all to be interpreted and
understood in light of justification by faith. When justification falls, all
true knowledge of the grace of God in human life falls with it, and then, as
Luther said, the church itself falls," states Packer in his
"Introductory Essay." Furthermore, he writes, "It is doubtful
whether a better exposition of it (justification) exists. And his (Buchanan's)
preacher's style imparts a warmth to his writing which we do not find in (say)
the lawyer-like Cunningham, and which is very refreshing. There is no doubt
that this is still the best text-book on its subject, from the standpoint of
the classic covenant theology, that the student can find."

BANNERMAN, JAMES
Church of Christ: A Treatise
on the Nature, Powers, Ordinances, Discipline, and Government of the Christian
Church (1869)
Two large
volumes. A classic on the Church and worship!
This is one of the most extensive studies of its
kind ever compiled. Nothing compares to it on this subject.
Regarding these gems, Iain Murray has stated,
In our day, however greatly we need an evangelical revival, we
need more than that. We need another Reformation, a movement which will go 'to
the root of the mischief' and bring back the visible church to the pattern of
God's Word in her government, ordinances and ministry. The republication of
Bannerman is a step in that direction... For those who wish to study the
doctrine of the Church in its several aspects as it was held by the majority of
the Reformers, Puritans, Covenanters and leaders of 'The Third Reformation,' it
will prove an invaluable textbook.
Volume
one deals
with the nature and power of the church, containing a lengthy explanation of
the Church in its relation to the state (which is one of the best treatments of
this topic to be found anywhere!). From there it deals with matters in regard
to which church power is exercised (i.e. in regard to doctrine, ordinances, the
instrumentality and time of public worship -- with a discussion of holy days,
Independency, and confessions). Volume two
continues where volume one left off, providing a lengthy section on the
sacraments, covering the parties in whom the right to exercise church power is
vested, examining crucial points concerning Christian liberty, comparing the Popish, Prelatic, Independent,
Congregational and Presbyterian systems, etc. Nine appendices deal with a wide range of
practical topics including union between churches, church/state relations,
ordination, and valuable notes on the literature related to this subject. If you are interested
in Church issues, it is not likely that you will find a better set.

Greg Price calls this one of the
best short defences of exclusive Psalmody. It is excerpted from The Original
Covenanter magazine
(Dec, 1883, vol. 3, No. 12). Here is a taste of Dick's writing, "Hymns of
human composition are used so commonly now in public worship by Presbyterian
churches that it is difficult to believe that the practice is not a hundred
years old, and that in some of the churches it is of very recent date. On the
supposition that it is good and dutiful and wise to sing such hymns in worship,
it is equally difficult to account for the neglect of the churches at the time
of the Reformation, and for generations afterwards. What could have so blinded
the reformers as to make them reject hymns and sing the Psalms alone? How could
the Westminster Divines, in framing their Confession of Faith and Directory for
Worship, have been so unanimous in the blunder that the service of praise is to
consist of the 'singing of Psalms?' And apart from the aspect of duty, how
could the Presbyterian churches, for about a hundred and fifty or two hundred
years after the Westminster Assembly, have been so insensible to the power of hymns
as an attractive addition to their public services? We cannot by any means
understand how it was that, if it was dutiful to use hymns in worship, the
reformers did not discover the Scriptural warrant for the duty, especially as
hymns had been used for centuries by the Church of Rome. Nor can we understand
how they rejected the hymns and used the Psalms alone, unless on the
supposition that they believed the use of hymns to be part of the will-worship
of Rome. If they were wrong on this point, then Rome and our modern
Presbyterian churches are right. In that case, the Puritans and Covenanters
were fanatics, and Romanists were truly enlightened! And most of our
Presbyterian churches of the present day were fanatical too, and did not become
truly enlightened and liberal till they got back to the Romish practice!"

BROWN, JOHN (of Wamphray)
The Life of Justification
Opened (1695)
The title continues: "Or, a Treatise grounded
upon Gal. 2.11. Wherein the Orthodox Doctrine of Justification by Faith, &
Imputation of Christ's Righteousness, is clearly expounded, solidly confirmed,
& learnedly vindicated from the various Objections of its Adversaries.
Whereunto are subjoined some Arguments against Universal Redemption." In
1828 Dr. Burns wrote, "Mr. John Brown was
unquestionably one of the most eminent divines Scotland has yet produced, as
his numerous writings, still carefully sought after by solid and judicious
Christians, fully envince" (Johnston, Treasury of the
Scottish Covenant,
p. 339). Regarding this book Dr. Walker noted, "By
far our most thorough exposition and discussion of the doctrine it handles; and
all the more to be prized because of the particular bearing it has on the new
views which Baxter and others had begun to propagate, and which in some shape
are ever returning upon ourselves" (Ibid., p. 341).
Interestingly, Brown, in the preface, after warning against Arminianism
"as the immediate way to introduce Popery" states, "Yea even
those who were purer in appearance, pressing the moral duties and practical
doctrine of piety (I mean the followers of that famous Minister Mr. Richard
Baxter) did corrupt the true doctrine of justification, because they adopted
universal grace and redemption." One of
the best, if not the best, books ever written on the topic of justification!

The title continues: "Also
the Questions of Paedobaptisme and Dipping Handled from Scripture. In a Second
Part of the Dissuasive from the Errors of the Time." Shows the origin,
progress and changing character of the Anabaptist's heresies -- many which
still afflict the body of Christ in our day (even in so-called
"Reformed" circles). A fine defense of the biblical view of baptism
is also given, including many answers to Anabaptist (Baptist) objections on
this point. A staggering array of "testimonies" (i.e. quotations) are
marshalled by Baillie -- both in refuting and setting forth the pernicious
Anabaptist teachings. Baillie was one of the Scottish Commissioners sent to the
Westminster Assembly. His international perspective and insight (concerning the
ecclesiastical and civil battles for the Protestant cause of his day) makes for
an interesting backdrop to this title -- not often encountered among most
authors dealing with these topics. 220 pages.
