The History of Redemption
"[A] massive theological treatise in the form of history," notes Christian History magazine (Vol. 4, No. 4, p. 6). Furthermore, regarding Edwards' work on this book, CH states, "To prepare himself for the task, he read every historical work he could lay his hands on. He planned to trace the workings of God from Creation to his own day." Edwards chronicles God's mercy and faithfulness to His Church and the destruction of His enemies. Written from the older postmillennial perspective, useful insights abound. 359 pages.

EIRE, CARLOS M.N.
War Against the Idols: The Reformation of Worship from Erasmus to Calvin
Eire shows that as the Reformation progressed the primary focus of the Reformers became upholding God's sovereign prerogative in worship -- what today is called the regulative principle of worship. Eire's War Against the Idols demonstrates the extent of the Reformers clear condemnation of Arminianism in worship (i.e. will-worship [Col. 2:23]) in rejecting all elements of worship that did not have Scriptural warrant. In fact, Calvin was so intent on highlighting this point, concerning the centrality of worship (and the application of Sola Scriptura as exhibited in the regulative principle of worship), that he placed worship ahead of salvation in his list of the two most important elements of Biblical Christianity. Regarding Calvin's On the Necessity of Reforming the Church Eire notes,
Calvin speaks about the nature of worship and about the seriousness of the sin of idolatry in his 1543 treatise, On the Necessity of Reforming the Church, where he concentrates on the significance of worship for the Christian religion. Calvin's argument, as indicated by the title of the treatise, is that the Church had reached such a corrupt state that its reform could wait no longer. The most significant aspect of corruption singled out by Calvin is the perversion of worship, and it is in explaining this issue that he set forth the basis for his attack on idolatry.
Calvin begins by studying the place that worship holds in the Christian faith, and he concludes that it is one of the two elements that define Christianity:
If it be asked, then, by what things chiefly the Christian religion has a standing amongst us, and maintains its truth, it will be found that the following two not only occupy the principal place, but comprehend under them all the other parts, and consequently the whole substance of Christianity, viz., a knowledge first, of the right way to worship God; and secondly of the source from which salvation is to be sought. When these are kept out of view, though we may glory in the name of Christians, our profession is empty and vain. (War Against the Idols, p. 198, citing from Calvin's On the Necessity of Reforming the Church [FREE at: http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualnls/NRC_ch00.htm ] , emphases added).
The scholarly translational work found in Eire's book also gives insights into the worship question not found in any other English history books (concerning Calvin, Knox, and a host of others) -- for it contains much from previously untranslated (into English, that is) Reformation documents.
A large portion of this book centers on Calvin, but its major thrust is to reveal the single most burning issue confronting the Reformers: purity of worship! Furthermore, this book's teaching regarding the Reformers (and their view of the Scriptural law of worship) is as applicable today as it was in the days of the first Reformation -- for it brings to light the time-tested Biblical principles which guard against the errors, excesses, and idolatries of the Roman harlot (Roman Catholicism), Eastern Orthodoxy and all liturgical innovators on one hand and the modern "evangelicals" (including the sub-Reformed movement headed up by the likes of Steve Schlissel, John Frame, Doug Wilson et al.), Anabaptists and Charismatics on the other. This is, without a doubt, one of the best Reformation history books available -- stirring, scholarly, relevant and edifying!

Horae Apocalypticae; or, A Commentary on the Apocalypse, Critical and Historical; Including Also An Examination of the Chief Prophecies of Daniel (1862, 4 volumes)
The title continues: "Illustrated by an Apocalyptic Chart, and Engravings from Medals and Other Extant Monuments of Antiquity. With Appendices: Containing, Besides Other matters, A Sketch of the History of Apocalyptic Interpretation, Critical Reviews of the Chief Apocalyptic Counter-Schemes, and Indices."
This four volume set is respected by many as a scholarly work on eschatology. It will be especially valuable in our day as it absolutely destroys the Jesuit inspired preterist system by conclusively proving a late date for the writing of the book of Revelation. Elliott also demonstrates the impossibility of the futurist system, which, like preterism, was also concocted (as a system) by the Jesuits to counteract the classic Reformation eschatology called historicism. That this is no small issue is clear, as Kevin Reed exhibits (in his book review titled "The Ecclesiology of John Foxe: A book review by Kevin Reed of John Foxe and the Elizabethan Church by V. Norskov Olsen [Berkeley: University of California Press, 1973]") by citing Olsen when he writes,
The Counter Reformation is generally considered to have three aspects: the Jesuits, the Inquisition, and the Council of Trent. In view of the significance of the Protestant apocalyptic interpretation of history which prophetically pinpointed step by step the events covering the whole Christian era from the beginning to the end, it seems justifiable to suggest a fourth aspect, namely the praeteristic and futuristic interpretations launched by Catholic expositors as a counterattack (p. 47).
All the major Reformers and all the major Reformation creeds and confessions adopted the historicist position -- and it is this position that Elliott so skillfully defends. Included in Horae Apocalypticae you will also find a very useful historical survey of who held which positions concerning eschatology, much history on the Roman empire (and its interaction with Christianity), how the Reformation, Islam, etc. were prophesied in the Apocalypse, a world chronology according to the Hebrew Scriptures (which would make the Earth 6127 years old), patristic views of prophecy, the beast and his mark (666) revealed, and much more. The Papacy is also shown to be the apocalyptic antichrist, which was a standard position among the Reformers. Elliott also deals with Moses Stuart's Preterism.
Concerning Elliott's Horae Apocalypticae H. Gratton Guinness, writes,
The "Horae Apocalypticae" of Elliott, which may well be considered as the most important and valuable commentary of the Apocalypse which has ever been written, was also called into existence by Futurist attacks on the Protestant interpretation of prophecy (and the same would apply in our day, but even more so, as the classic Protestant system of interpretation for the book of Revelation is still being undermined by the Jesuit inspired Futurist system, but also, increasingly [even in so-called "Reformed" circles] by the other Jesuit inspired system: Preterism!--RB). In his preface to the fifth edition Elliott says:
When I first began to give attention to the subject some twenty years ago, it was the increasing prevalence among Christian men in our country of the Futurist system of Apocalyptic interpretation -- a system which involved the abandonment of the opinion held by all the chief fathers and doctors of our Church respecting the Roman Popes and Popedom as the great intended antichristian power of Scripture-prophecy, -- that suggested to me the desirableness and indeed the necessity, of a more thoroughly careful investigation of the whole subject than had been made previously. For thereby I trusted that we might see God's mind on the question; all engaged in that controversy being alike agreed as to the fact of its being expressed in this prophecy, rightly understood: and whether indeed in His view Popery was that monstrous evil, and the Reformation a deliverance to our Church and nation as mighty and blessed, as we had been taught from early youth to regard them...
Elliott's Commentary was practically the work of the lifetime of one of the most learned and laborious expositors of modern times. Like Gibbon's "History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," to which it frequently refers, it stands alone in its sphere, as a monumental work of surpassing value. The ten thousand references it contains to ancient and modern works bearing on the subject elucidated greatly enhance its value. We may safely say that during the half century which has elapsed since it publication, no other work on historic lines of interpretation has appeared of equal importance (History Unveiling Prophecy or Time as an Interpreter [at http://www.swrb.com/catalog/g.htm ], pp. 297-299, emphases added).
"Furthermore, in 1878, Charles Haddon Spurgeon wrote the classic reference work Commenting on Commentaries. The 'prince of preachers' surveyed over 1,400 commentaries on the books of the Bible providing bible students and pastors with a valuable guide for selecting books for their libraries. His comments are often as entertaining as they are helpful. Each book of the bible forms a chapter in this work.. Spurgeon provides pithy analysis and offers his recommendation of the best commentary and those to avoid. When he reaches the book of Revelation his clear recommendation is E.B. Elliott's Horae Apocalypticae. He succinctly states that it was "the standard work". It would surprise most Baptists today to realize that this most eminent Baptist preacher was himself an Historicist or Continuist as he called it then. Elliott's work was the standard work in 1878 because the Historicist interpretation was still the standard in Protestantism and this work had gone through 4 editions and had established itself as the standard within the Historicist school. Elliot had died three years earlier in 1875" (from: http://www.historicist.com).
Biographical Information (from http://www.historicist.com/horae.com)
"Edward Bishop Elliott (1793-1875), scholarly prophetic expositor, received his education at Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating in 1816. After traveling in Italy and Greece he was given the vicarage of Tuxford, Nottingham, in 1824, and later was made prebendary of Heytesbury, Wiltshire. In 1849 he became incumbent of St. Mark's Church, Brighton. A member of the Evangelical school, he was an earnest promoter of missionary enterprise and an ardent advocate of premillennialism. Elliott was thoroughly equipped as a scholar and was deeply interested in prophecy, spending a lifetime in investigation and seeking to understand God's mind thereon. His Horae Apocalypticae (Hours with the Apocalypse) [literally 'time with the Apocalypse'] is doubtless the most elaborate work ever produced on the Apocalypse... Begun in 1837, its 2500 pages of often involved and overloaded text are buttressed by some 10,000 invaluable references to ancient and modern works bearing on the topics under discussion.... Perhaps its most unique feature is the concluding sketch of the rise and spread of the Jesuit counter systems of interpretation that had made such inroads upon Protestantism. Holding unswervingly to the Historical School of interpretation, Elliott gives the most complete exposure of these counter interpretations to be found." (The Prophetic Faith of Our Fathers, Leroy Froom vol. III, pp. 716-718)
Sadly, one major warning needs to be given about this book. However valuable the contents are as a defense of historicism (and the late date of the book of Revelation), the author adopted the premillennial heresy (meaning a destructive heresy and not necessarily a damnable heresy; see George Gillespie's Truth and Heresy, free at: http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualnls/TruthHer.htm, for more on the distinction between destructive and damnable heresies) and thus marred an otherwise useful work when he promotes these views. 2611 pages, with a 29 page index.

ELLIOTT, E.B. (Alexander M'Leod, David Steele, George Faber, Thomas Newton)
Islam in Revelation: An Historic Look at Protestant Eschatological Thought on the Rise and Fall of Islam
Considering the prominent place in Scripture that God apportions to revealing Islam as one of the most significant antichristian forces in history (and in the light of the rise and progress of Islam in our day), Still Waters Revival Books presents the following information to all serious-minded Christians with the hope that it will be a great encouragement to your faith.
There are two great antichristian religious systems of deceit revealed in the book of Revelation. The "great western antichrist" of Roman Catholicism (Rev. 17 and 18) and the "great eastern antichrist" of Islam (Rev. 9). This has been the majority position of historic Protestant interpretation (Historicism) for centuries (as all the most faithful Reformers and all the Reformation creeds and confessions attest). For example, the illustrious John Calvin proclaimed that "Mahomet" and "the Pope" are "the two horns of Antichrist."
The following six extracts on Islam's place in prophecy are taken from five Historicist books which Still Waters Revival Books has published over the past years (see the URLs noted below for the full printed editions of each title). These extracts not only clearly show that the rise and fall of Islam is prophesied in Scripture, but they also give us one of the most powerful testimonies to God's sovereignty (over all His creatures and all their actions) in all of the Word of God. In fact, when the historicist position is carefully studied, the prophetic fulfillment in the case of Islam and Revelation chapter nine is seen to be so striking and well attested that "even advocates of other approaches who are adamant in their rejection of the historicist system of interpretation have admitted the convincing nature of this particular identification" (Steve Gregg, commenting on Rev. 9:1-6 in Revelation: Four Views, p. 176).
We hope that you will prayerfully consider the information in this book and that it will help to open the door to many other marvellous truths that God has for you in His Word.
The following six excerpts on Islam in Revelation comprise 105 printed pages and are taken from:
We conclude our summary of Islam in Revelation with a short note from Dr. F. Nigel Lee's Calvin and Islam (also available at http://www.swrb.com/catalog/L.htm),
John Calvin writes:
" In our own day, indeed , very many people begin to waver -- when they consider the long continued dispersion of the Church. As if this had not been regulated by the purpose of God!... The pretext of the [preteristic] Romanists which they make in extenuation of the tyranny of their idol [the Papacy] -- is that it was not possible for Christ to forsake His bride. But here, the weak have an assurance on which to rest -- when they learn that the disfigurement which they see in the Church, has long since been foretold.
"The impudence of the Romanists, on the other hand, is clearly exposed. Because Paul declares that when the World has been brought under the rule of Christ -- a defection will take place....
"The minds of [Romanizing] ancients were so bewitched -- that they believed [preteristically] that Nero would be Antichrist! However, Paul is not speaking of one individual -- but of a kingdom that was to be seized by Satan, for the purpose of setting up a seat of abomination in the midst of God's Temple. This we see accomplished in Popery.
"The defection has indeed spread more widely! For, since Mohammed was an apostate, he turned his followers, the Turks, from Christ.... The sect of Mohammed was like a raging overflow, which in its violence tore away about half of the Church. It remained for [the Papal] Antichrist to infect with his poison the part which was left."
Yet, in the words the Lord Jesus shall slay' in Second Thessalonians 2:8 -- Calvin insists Paul "predicted the destruction of the reign of Antichrist.... He will be annihilated by the Word of the Lord....
"Paul does not think that Christ will accomplish this in a single moment.... Christ will scatter the darkness in which Antichrist will reign, by the rays which He will emit before His coming -- just as the sun, before becoming visible to us, chases away the darkness of the night with its bright light.
Furthermore, Dr. Lee writes,
It does seem that the fourth iron kingdom was in fact both the pre-Papal and the pre-Islamic undivided Pagan Roman Empire, as well as the later Western-Roman Papal and the contemporaneous Eastern-Roman Islamic Empire into which it then subdivided. Indeed, both "Mahomet" and "the Pope" -- as we have already seen -- Dr. Calvin called "the two horns of Antichrist." Thus they correspond to the two legs of the later Roman Empire -- Islam and the Papacy.

Preterism Refuted ( 2000, 3 cassettes)
Contains all of the sections from Elliott's classic Horae Apocalypticae; or, A Commentary on the Apocalypse which directly refute preterism ("Critical Examination and Refutation of the Chief Counter-Schemes of Apocalyptic Interpretation," Vol. 4, Appendix part 2, pp. 564-599) -- as well as a defense of the late date for the book of Revelation (Vol. 1, Essay 2, pp. 32-48; Vol. 1, Appendix, pp. 533-548) and a defense of the Scriptural "year-day" principle of prophetic Protestant interpretation (Vol. 3, pp. 260ff.). Furthermore, these tapes show why it is Scripturally impossible for Nero to be the antichrist, while also taking a few passing shots a futurism (though most of what Elliott wrote against futurism can only be found in the complete printed set of Horae Apocalypticae).
Also included are:
1. Fairbairn's "Is Popery the Antichrist: The Tendency to Describe Things According to the Reality, Rather Than the Appearance or Profession (from Appendix "L" in The Interpretation of Prophecy, $39.95, hardcover, summary at: http://www.swrb.com/catalog/F.htm).
2. L'Avenir's "Apocalyptic Interpretation: The Six Major Views" (originally published in Reformed Presbyterian magazine in Scotland [Oct., 1856] and more recently republished in the Original Covenanter & Contending Witness magazine available at http://www.swrb.com/catalog/C.htm -- this article gives a succinct overview and outline [including the origins] of the following views of apocalyptic interpretation: 1. The Anti-Protestant Futurist theory [prominent in our day among dispensationalists and most other premillennialists]; 2. The Anti-Protestant Preterist theory [prominent in our day among Reconstructionists and some Roman Catholics]; 3. The Modified Futurist theory; 4. The Typico-Spiritual theory [or Idealism]; 5.The Parallel Septenary theory; 6. The Continuous Historical Protestant theory [i.e. the Biblical/Reformation view prominent among those that still embrace the unadulterated creeds and confessions of historic Protestantism -- a teaching primarily know today as Historicism].).
3. A fantastic overview of the book of Revelation from chapter two of M'Leods Lectures Upon the Principal Prophecies of the Revelation ($9.99 P; $19.00 HP, summary at: http://www.swrb.com/catalog/M.htm)
4. A brief extract from Steele's Notes on the Apocalypse ($9.99 P; $14.00 HP; $14.95 on 8 cassettes, summary at: http://www.swrb.com/catalog/S.htm) concerning prerequisites to correctly understanding the book of Revelation.
5. The reader's (i.e. Larry Birger's) introduction and narration.
These tapes are a good answer to Ken Gentry's recent articles on the heads of the beast and antichrist and Gary Demar's elementary attempt at dismissing the historic Protestant view that the papacy is the antichrist/man of sin. Reg Barrow also notes,
If I'd had access to this information before I became a Preterist as a young Christian I doubt that I would have ever embraced this erroneous, Jesuit-inspired, reformation-denying heresy -- I can only thank God that He has now led me to the eschatology of the Scriptures and of our Reformed forefathers (what is commonly called historicism). These tapes will (D.V.) be devastating to the Romish views of eschatology that have become commonplace among Protestants who have backslidden from the biblical attainments and revival of Apostolic Christianity that took place during the Reformation.
