Select Customer Comments on SWRB's Reformation Bookshelf CD set.

"I have been systematically working through reading the... Reformed CDs I purchased. I must say, there is nothing like them available anywhere. It is the most amazing collection of works I know of in one package to date... The Puritan and Reformed material presented on these CDs is exceptional. I am continually amazed at the depth and breadth of information in both collections, and the rarity of works that I now have at my fingertips. You have done an immeasurable service for the Kingdom of Christ in making these CDs available, and every pastor and theologian should own them without question (they would be foolhardy to pass them by) ... more"

- For Christ's Crown and Covenant,
Dr. C. Matthew McMahon, A Puritan's Mind Ministries

______________

"This collection of 62 CDs is a truly astounding accomplishment. There is nothing like this available to the ordinary Christian on the whole face of the earth. Now, for the first time ever, ordinary Christians can have direct and near effortless access to the very cream of Puritan and Reformed, as well as Covenanter, literature... What they used to say of the Puritan John Flavel's preaching, can be said of these CDs: they are 'hissing hot'! ... more" (emphases added).

- Dr Jonathan D. Moore, Cambridge, UK.
(Scholar of 16th and 17th century Calvinistic literature.)

"Your... CD's of Reformation and Puritan authors are a great boon to studies in the Reformed-Puritan experiential tradition. Receive our hearty thanks for your invaluable work in making so many rare gems accessible to thousands."

PRAYER & SELF-DENIAL

"Pray much for self-denial. Prayer sets God to work, Psalm 10:17. Some pray for assurance but lack self-denial, as if God would set seal to a blank. Let this be your grand request, a self-denying frame of heart. Self-denial does not grow in nature, it is a fruit of the Spirit. Beg God that he will plant this heavenly flower in your soul. Say 'Lord, whatever Thou deniest me, deny me not self-denial. Let me rather lack great parts, nay, let me rather lack the comforts of the Spirit than self-denial." There may be going to heaven without comfort, but there is no going there without self-denial."

Resource 2. THE PSALMS OF DAVID IN METRE (i.e. the Scottish Metrical Psalter of 1650): Allowed By the Authority of the Kirk of Scotland, and of Several Branches of the Presbyterian Church in the United States. With Notes, Exhibiting the Connection, Explaining the Sense, and for Directing and Animating the Devotion (1844 edition published by Robert Carter [New York]) John Brown of Haddington (annotations).

Psalter by Francis Rouse, the Westminster Divines, and the Scottish General Assembly (from 1646-1650)

This is the Psalter (less Brown's notes, which were added later) mandated, approved and used (for public and private worship) by the Westminster Assembly and all those who covenanted to uphold the Biblical Reformation that these Divines proclaimed. The text of the Scottish Metrical Psalms was authorized by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1650. The notes added by Brown are suitable for explaining the Psalm before singing and are a great aid to understanding and worship (whether public, family or private). Every song leader (especially fathers for family worship) should have a copy of this edition of the Scottish Psalter with Brown's notes. If money is a factor, the smaller, inexpensive hardcover, containing just the Psalms (see below) should suffice for other members of the family--or the father (or other song leaders) can simply line out the Psalms (as Moses, David, the Apostles, etc. did). All the Psalms, excepting one, are rendered into common metre (with some alternate versions added) and thus can be sung by even those with almost no knowledge of music. For example, the tune to "Amazing Grace" is one of the many tunes that fits with all common metre renderings. And even Psalm 136, the one Psalm not in common metre, can be sung to any common metre tune, as it adds only one extra syllable to the end of every second line. Maybe not the delight of the accomplished musician, but certainly calculated to make the Psalms easily accessible to young and old alike (an attainment surely pleasing to the Lord Jesus Christ) -- as this Psalter was purposely produced to foster international (and covenanted) Reformation. The Scottish Metrical Psalter is a faithful translation and without a doubt remains the best Psalter in existence today. We have added (at no extra cost to our customers) a copy of the Westminster Shorter Catechism to this printing. This has been done to assist parents in catechizing their children during family worship. Also included in this edition (from the original publisher) is "A Table of the Psalms Classed Under Several Subject Heads" and an "Alphabetical Index of the First Line of Each Stanza." These sections comprise 48 pages of small print alone, while the complete book (not including the Shorter Catechism we've added) is made up of 424 pages. This is a primary source document of Reformation; not to be missed by those serious about the Reformed faith -- and worshipping God in spirit and in truth. There are few things in life as pleasing and enjoyable as communing with Christ through the singing of His Psalms!

Sketches of the Covenanters (1913)

Stirring accounts of sacrifice and martyrdom for the Reformed Faith that will bring tears to eyes of all but the most backslidden. Follows the chain of events which gave Scotland two Reformations and a Revolution. John Knox, the National Covenant, The Solemn League and Covenant, the Westminster Assembly, the Field Meetings and the "Killing Times," and much more are all covered. The history of many great battles for Christ and His royal rights are accurately recounted in this moving chronicle of Reformation struggles and martyrdom. This book also sheds much light upon the warfare of Christ's bride (with the dragon) for true Scriptural liberty, while telling the story of some of the most prominent Christians (Rutherford, Renwick, Henderson, et al.) since the days of the Apostles. This is one of our best history books, and is highly recommended! It is great for home schooling, history classes and various other learning situations, as it contains convenient review questions at the end of each chapter. Furthermore, it is written in an easy-to-read and engaging style, which makes it one of the best introductions to the Covenanters and the periods of the first and second Reformations in the British Isles. 412 pages.

The Solemn League and Covenant

Hetherington, concerning the Solemn League and Covenant (the epitome of second Reformation attainments) writes, "no man who is able to understand its nature, and to feel and appreciate its spirit and its aim, will deny it to be the wisest, the sublimest, and the most sacred document ever framed by uninspired men" (History of the Westminster Assembly of Divines, [1856] SWRB reprint 1993, p. 134). What took place during the days of the writing and international subscriptions to the Solemn League and Covenant has been cited before as a foretaste of the millennial glory to come. The Reformed Presbytery writes, "These modern pigmies are too far dwarfed in intellectual stature to measure the altitude, of our glorious Covenanted Reformation -- a Reformation which, imbedded in the law and the covenant of God, has already brought civil and ecclesiastical freedom to many millions; and which is doubtless destined to be laid in the foundation of reconstructed society in the millennial period of the world" (A Short Vindication of Our Covenanted Reformation, [1879] SWRB reprint 1996, p. 4). In this lecture Price gives a brief history of the three major causes leading up to the Solemn League and Covenant. These were: 1.) the erroneous beliefs and practices associated with the so-called divine right of Kings; 2.) the apostasy of Prelacy in doctrine (e.g. the Arminianism of Rome), worship (tolerating and introducing anti-regulativist Romish superstitions), and government (against the divine right of Presbyterianism) -- all three of these areas being a practical denial of sola Scriptura in that man ordained elements were idolatrously adopted over those clearly prescribed in Scripture; 3.) the desire of the Reformers for a covenanted Presbyterian uniformity in church and state. Price shows how many of the national Protestant churches of the day (outside of the British Isles) were also looking into swearing this covenant (including the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and Sweden), as a means to biblical unity and uniformity. In fact, this covenant was framed (primarily by Alexander Henderson) with the intention of uniting Protestants worldwide. As Price shows, this goal quickly unraveled with the coming to power of that Judas of the Covenant (Cromwell), his army and the Independents. The descending obligation of this covenant is also covered, and application is made to modern nations (like the USA, Canada, etc.) who are the national posterity of the original covenanters. Application is also made to the apostate modern church (and Price names names). It is also shown how this covenant was a term of communion in the church and how negative civil sanctions were to be applied to those who publicly opposed the Solemn League and Covenant -- students could not even enter college without proof of subscription. Price uses various historical citations from The Acts of the General Assemblies of the Church of Scotland From the Year 1638 to the Year 1649 Inclusive (available from SWRB as a rare bound photocopy) to demonstrate these historical facts. Later defections from the covenanted Reformation, such as those by Charles II and William's civilly and ecclesiastically corrupted Revolution settlement are also dealt with. The second half of the tape summarizes the six articles of the Solemn League and Covenant; concentrating on the biblical (civil, ecclesiastical and individual) responsibilities that were sworn in this covenant. Application is made to our day and the tape closes with some questions regarding American history and government and the Canadian constitution. The Solemn League and Covenant (because it was agreeable to the Word of God) formed the foundation of the second Reformation internationally (as is seen in the letter received by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland on June 4, 1644, from the Scottish commissioners [Rutherford, Gillespie, et al] at the Westminster assembly; cf. The Acts..., pp. 228, 250). This covenant still binds the church and many nations today, and until these "moral persons" renew this covenant (in spirit and in truth) the Lord will continue to prosecute the quarrel of His covenant. Thus, this is an exceedingly important tape as it explains one of the major, modern causes of God's wrath upon the nations and the church. When the churches and nations are granted repentance in (or preparing for) the millennium they will be found "going forth by the footsteps of the flock" (Song 1:8) and not turned "aside by the flock of thy companions" (i.e. those that appear religious but are actually a hindrance to the work of the building of Christ's kingdom, Song of Solomon 1:7, cf. Douglas' Strictures on Occasional Hearing, [1820] SWRB reprint 1996); and there is no "footstep of the flock" more clearly distinguished in the bedrock of history (since the second century) than the Solemn League and Covenant.

Resource 5. HARRIS, THOMAS H.

Rome's Responsibility for the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln (1897)

General Harris was "a member of the 'Military Commission' that tried and condemned the conspirators" and thus "he had unusual opportunities for accurate knowledge concerning Rome's responsibility for... the assassination of Abraham Lincoln" (Pref. Note). The General writes,

The Jesuit plans with the utmost art and cunning, unhampered by any moral restraints, and always with the utmost secrecy; and carries out his plans in the dark. We think, however, that in this case, we have succeeded in tracing him through all the devious wanderings of his dark and slimy path, and, in fixing upon him the responsibility for the assassination of President Lincoln (p. 21).

Though not a Covenanter book, and thus defective in some obvious areas, this title contains much useful information which exposes the Romish harlot. 40 pages.

Resource 6. KNOX, JOHN

Against an Anabaptist: In Defense of Predestination

Curt Daniel calls this "Knox's major theological work." Moreover, he states that this is "more than a short answer (to the Anabaptist--RB, 468 pages), it is a complete exposition and defence of the Reformed doctrine at the height of the Scottish Reformation" which helped "guide early Presbyterianism and build the theological bridge between Edinburgh and Geneva." Furthrermore, Walker writes:

"Very far from being a mere iconoclast, he (Knox) was also a great teacher of his country men... the long and elaborate treatise on Predestination, in which the doctrines of grace and of divine sovereignty are so vigorously, yet upon the whole so wisely, asserted and maintained -- gives Knox a high place among theologians" (Theology and Theologians of Scotland).

This work was much esteemed by Knox's Puritan friends in England and "Calderwood, in summing up Knox's character, remarks: 'How profound he was in divinity, that work of his upon Predestination may give evidence" (Laing. ed., p. 17). Furthermore, Laing beautifully sets the context of this work, writing,

At the Period of the Reformation, there prevailed among Christians of all denominations the general belief, 'that the salvation of man depends on the free grace of God. But they differed on the question, whether the divine decree which has reference to this point is unconditional, or depends on the conduct of man, whether it is general or particular... Thus it happened, that Roman Catholics, Arminians, and most of all Socinians endeavoured, in the sense of Pelagianism, or Semi-pelagianism, to reconcile the divine decrees with human liberty. On the other hand, both Lutherans and Calvinists, following the example of Augustine, rejected the notion of the freedom of the will, and denied every co-operation on the part of man. Nevertheless it is a striking fact, that the Lutherans avoided the strict consequences of the Augustinian system, and asserted that the decrees of God are conditional, while the Calvinists not only admitted the necessity of those consequences, but having once determined the idea of Predestination, went so far as to maintain that the fall of man itself was predestinated by God, (Supralapsarianism).

Quoting freely from Calvin, his major influence in this work, Knox lays low the heresy that man plays any part in his own salvation. This heresy, of man's pretended ability to save himself (in any way), is at the root of all defection from the sovereign God of Scripture and is rampant today! As Kevin Reed notes, in refuting this Anabaptist, Knox unequivocally states, "For with the Pelagians and papists, you have become teachers of free will, and defenders of your own justice," clearly recognizing that, "the defence of man's free will, to do good and avoid evil," is "the damned heresy of Pelagius." Moreover, regarding this work, Reed continues,

A perceptive reading of this dispute will reveal the parallels between the Anabaptists and modern proponents of free will. Advocates for free will are commonly found among Baptists, "evangelicals," Charismatics, and cultists. Their line of argumentation is virtually identical to that of Knox's opponent (John Knox the Forgotten Reformer, only available on the new PHP CD [ http://www.swrb.com/catalog/R.htm ], pp. 219-20).

This book contains significant information for defeating the forces of antichrist today; for he (especially ecclesiastical antichrist) continues to manifest the same spirit of error seen in the days of Knox -- deceiving men into thinking that they, in some way (be it ever so small), are able to save themselves.

Resource 7. MANTON, THOMAS

The Complete Works of Thomas Manton

(22 Volumes)

Manton was "one of the most eminent of the Nonconformist divines." He was born in 1620 and died in 1677. He was chosen to write "The Epistle to the Reader: Especially Heads of Families" of the famous Westminster standards. "Received episcopal institution in 1661. Resigned in 1662, on account of the Act of Uniformity (which among other wicked, Satanic enactments, its principal terms required a "declaration of 'unfeigned assent and consent' to everything contained in the Book of Common Prayer, re-ordination for those not episcopally ordained" and, most evil of all, "a renunciation of the Solemn League and Covenant. Knowing that the Puritans would not submit to such terms, the Authorities framed the Act to secure their expulsion" cf. Sermons of the Great Ejection by Iain Murray [Banner of Truth, reprinted 1962]). He was a man of great learning and extensive reading, of a sound judgement, and had the art of reducing volumes of divinity into a narrow compass. According to Charnock, he was the best collector of sense of the age. Dr. Bates says , 'A clear judgement, rich fancy, strong memory, and happy elocution, met in him, and were excellently improved by diligent study'" (James Darling, Cyclopaedia Bibliographica, 1854, pp. 1953-1954). Includes Manton's better known volumes, such as his commentary on James and Jude and his Sermons on Psalm 119, as well as a host of other practical preaching, teaching and Scriptural exposition. The 22nd volume contains two large indices (by subject and text).

Resource 8. DIODATI, JOHN

Pious and Learned Annotations Upon the Holy Bible Plainly Expounding the Most Difficult Places Thereof By that Godly and Famous Divine, Mr. John Diodati, Late Minister of the Gospel in Geneva (third edition [in two volumes], 1651)

The title continues: "Corrected and much augmented, with additional notes of the same author, throughout the whole work. And the analysis upon each several book of the Old and New Testament, setting down the chief heads contained therein, being very much enlarged, is now fully completed in this third edition." "These Annotations were first written in Italian, by a reverend Protestant Divine of the Church of Geneva, the most reformed in all France, and famous for the great lights of it, John Calvin, Theodore Beza, and this renowned John Diodati, their successor both in place and eminent erudition.... In fine, here are choice Meditations, and sound expositions, more to be valued then refined gold... and the choicest subject the world ever afforded, being Jesus Christ and him crucified, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life" (Translator from "To the Reader"). Concerning Diodati, Darling (Cyclopaedia Bibliographica, p. 918) writes, "Born at Geneva 1576; died 1640. This celebrated Italian Protestant divine, belonging to a noble family from Lucca in Italy, is known chiefly by his biblical works, and by his translation of Father Paul's History of the Council of Trent into French. He was sent in 1618 by the Church of Geneva to the Synod of Dort. His translation of the Bible into Italian is still considered one of the best." Regarding these Annotations in particular Darling further notes, "Short, but comprehensive practical annotations; many of them were introduced into the (Westminster--RB) Assembly's Annotations. The above (i.e. the third edition--RB) is the best edition." Richard Baxter, in compiling a list of the most essential books for Christian edification, after listing the Bible and a Concordance, counseled Christians to obtain "a sound Commentary or Annotations, either Diodati's, the English (or Westminster--RB) Annotations, or the Dutch (A Christian Directory, p. 732). 1104 pages.

Religious Courtship: Being Historical Discourses, On the Necessity of Marrying Religious Husbands and Wives Only (1743)

Early in his life Defoe was studying to become a (dissenting) minister. Later he also wrote the famous novel, Robinson Crusoe. This title, written as a dialogue (of over 400 pages), demonstrates why husbands and wives should be of the same religion with one another; and how to bring such ends about. It also contains an appendix concerning the necessity of taking none but religious servants, and a proposal for the better managing of servants. The Psalms in Worship

Dr. David Freeman (who was John Murray's pastor in Philadelphia) said that the Psalms in Worship was the most comprehensive treatment of this subject to be found anywhere. This volume (of almost 600 pages) consists of material presented at two conventions in 1905, promoting the claims of the Psalms in worship. Two articles covering each of 27 related topics comprise this volume, making a total of 54 separate papers (all thoroughly indexed and including a new appendix added by the publisher). Articles included range from argumentative discussions of a doctrinal and critical kind (defending exclusive Psalmody), to broader discussions along historical, literary, and practical lines. This is a one of a kind publication and nothing else like it is available today.

The Covenanted Reformation Defended (1998)

Unsurpassed on points related to the Lord's supper, separation and covenanting as set forth by the best Reformers and best Reformed churches. This book (in answer to the neopresbyterianism of Richard Bacon) is particularily strong on matters related to the original intent of the Westminster divines! It includes great citations from Calvin and the Westminster Assembly. Deals with many foundational aspects of the Covenanted Reformation (which gave us the Westminster Standards and the Solemn League and Covenant) from numerous original source documents (from the Westminster Assembly's advice to the English Parliament on the Lord's Supper to the official records of Calvin's Covenanting in Geneva).

Comprehensive and compelling, this is a shocking (and sometimes advanced) look at what really took place during both the first and second Reformations -- with extensive quotations from the writings of the major Reformers (not just quotes from what others have written about them). It conclusively and irrefutably demonstrates that those churches which today call themselves Presbyterian (and even many which claim a more general Reformed heritage) have seriously departed from the Scriptural standards, principles and worship of these previous Spirit-led Reformations.

The Covenanted Reformation Defended is written in an easy-to-read and easy-to-understand format and is an unsurpassed work that should not be missed by anyone interested in real Reformation in our day. This is without a doubt the best book to read if you want to understand what it means to be a Covenanter and to walk in the blood-stained footsteps of the witnessing church (Christ's Covenanted and Reformed flock) (Song 1:8)! 318 pages, 8.5" X 11".

Also defends the fourth term of communion: "That public, social covenanting is an ordinance of God, obligatory on churches and nations under the New Testament; that the National Covenant and the Solemn League are an exemplification of this divine institution; and that these Deeds are of continued obligation upon the moral person; and in consistency with this, that the Renovation of these Covenants at Auchensaugh, Scotland, 1712 was agreeable to the word of God." Resource 13. WYLIE, J.A.

The History of Protestantism (3 volumes, 1878)

Walk about Zion, and go round about her: tell the towers thereof. Mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces; that ye may tell it to the generation following" (Ps. 48:12-13).

In direct opposition to the command cited above in Psalm 48:12-13, when The History of Protestantism was first published, Rome banned this book, buying up and burning all the copies that they could lay their hands on. It was more hated and denounced by Papists than any other book of its time. History is a powerful weapon and all tyrants seek to either revise or bury the history of God's marvelous works. Rome is no exception. Rome twists history for its own wicked purposes, whereas Protestants use history (as commanded in Scripture) to build one another up in our most holy faith (Ps. 78:1-8).

"Wylie's... is the best history extant. I welcome its republishing. Read it. Study it. Circulate it and by so doing you will help to dispel the dark cloud of priestly superstition, popish idolatry and papal tyranny encircling our land" writes Ian Paisley. He continues, "The Reformation of the 16th century was the greatest revival of New Testament Christianity since the days of Pentecost. Then once more the gospel in its purity was preached with apostolic power and with apostolic results."

This massive three-volume set contains nearly 2000 (8.5" X 11") pages, more than 500 illustrations and a 21 page general index. It chronicles Protestantism in its progress from the first century to the late 17th century -- though the focus is clearly on the 16th and 17th centuries. After dealing with the early church, other early "Protestant" witnesses, the erection of the inquisition, Wycliffe, Huss and the Hussite wars, Wylie begins to chronicle Protestant history primarily as it grew in various nations. The Netherlands, Scotland, Germany, England, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, France, Poland, Bohemia, Hungary, Transylvania and various other locales, all receive prominent and detailed notice. Geneva and the Protestantism of the Waldensian valleys are also spotlighted. A whole section is devoted to the Jesuits, exposing their demonic cruelty and aspirations in overthrowing Reformation truth, persecuting the Reformers and unsettling the civil systems of all the lands that they were allowed to enter. All major (Westminster Assembly, the Solemn League and Covenant, the Synod of Dort, etc.) and many minor Protestant victories are covered in the amazing accounts documented by Wylie. James Arminius (Arminianism), Bloody (Queen) Mary, Charles II, and other notorious figures are also covered in this comprehensive chronicle. Whether recounting Luther's burning of the Papal Bull "excommunicating" him or Calvin's refusing of the Lord's supper (close communion) to the Libertines of Geneva (who said they would kill him for doing so), the pages of this book provide soul-stirring testimony to the international life and death struggle for the gospel of Christ that became known as the Protestant Reformation.

As an added bonus the pictures in these books are excellent for introducing children to major historical events relating to the struggle, sacrifice and victory of Christ's church on earth. The pictures (in conjunction with the historical accounts) of Protestant martyrs giving their lives for Christ have often made a permanent and godly impression upon both young and old alike. Moreover, this history can be used as a reference work (to gain an overview of the great controversy between the true church of Christ and the false, Harlot church of Rome) or read in greater detail to see the hand of God moving through His people and church throughout the centuries (winning over and/or testifying against various nations, tongues and kings, as we behold Christ's two witnesses prophesying in the midst of the 1260 years of the great apostasy [Rev. 10:8-17]).

In our day, when the Papal antichrist addresses the United Nations, is often the subject of major news reports, and regularly meets with national civil leaders (and when professing Protestants are defecting to "the whore of Babylon," and signing "peace" treaties with this great enemy of Christ [to fight cultural battles]), these books are needed more than ever. William Cunningham's words, though written many years ago, should be heeded by all faithful Christians today, for he said, "[i]t is quite evident, from the signs of the times, that the Popish controversy must be fought over again... It is incumbent upon ministers of the gospel to prepare themselves for the contest." Wylie's History of Protestantism will do much to prepare all faithful Christians to once again apply the sword of the Spirit to the Romish "MOTHER OF HARLOTS" who sits on seven mountains (Rev. 17:9) and is "drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus" (Rev. 17:6).

Many who have forgotten this history have already become easy prey for the ecclesiatical beast of Revelation. Don't let ignorance of history cause you to be torn by the claws of our adversary. "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Pet. 5:8).

Micah 3:5-8 (#6, #7, #8) Faithful and Unfaithful Ministry Contrasted

Describes from Scripture the characteristics and beliefs that attend a faithful ministry (or that will be seen in a faithful minister). Shows how both faithful ministry and magistracy are integral to Reformation, as exemplified in the two witnesses (or two olive trees) of Scripture (Rev. 11:3,4). Gives historical examples of faithfulness from Calvin and Andrew Melville (in his courageous rebuke to King James), as well as from other Reformation lankmark testimonies. Also demonstrates that classic Protestant position (cf. "Proof That the Church is Often Obscured" by Francis Turretin, http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualnls/ChuObsc.htm or pages 47-57 in Turretin's Institutes of Elenctic Theology, volume 3) that truth is often in the minority, residing in a faithful and despised remnant -- contrary to the lies of the Romish harlot concerning the splendor of the visible church. Every minister (and those aspiring to the ministry) should obtain this set -- as well as every Christian who prays for the peace and purity of Christ's church. Also includes a thundering example of Reformation preaching firing the gospel gun into the vitals of ecclesiastical Antichrist (as Wylie often does above). In enumerating the characteristics of unfaithful ministers (from Scripture) Price unmasks the Pope ("that Antichrist, that man of sin and son of perdition, that exalteth himself in the Church against Christ, and all that is called God," WCF 25:6) and Billy Graham as prime examples of deception and unfaithfulness in the visible church (as to essence) today. He points out how Arminianism in doctrine and worship (as well as a host of other sins) are exemplified in these two public figures (as well as in the Romish harlot [who rides the civil beast, Rev. 17-18] in general, along with her harlot daughters [the backsliding "Protestant" churches]).

Resource 14. Merle D'Aubigne, J. H.

History of the Reformation in Europe in the Time of Calvin (8 volumes, 1880 edition)

This engaging set, comprising eight volumes, is the sequel to J.H. Merle D'Aubigne's History of the Reformation of the Sixteenth Century (in 5 Volumes, 1846, [$US34.91, cerlox bound photocopy; $US89.00, Hardcover photocopy]). In his typical easy-to-read, captivating style, the author resumes where he had left off in his other five volumes (which focused more on Luther and the period of Reform up to 1531), entering, in this set, upon the more developed Reformation thought of Calvin, Knox, et al.

The preface (in volume one) of this important work states it this way,

At the conclusion of the preface to the first volume of the History of the Reformation, the author wrote, 'This work will consist of four volumes, or at the most five, which will appear successively.' These five volumes have appeared. In them are described the heroic times of Luther, and the effects

produced in Germany and other countries by the characteristic doctrine of that reformer -- justification by faith. They present a picture of that great epoch which contained in the germ the revival of Christianity in the last three centuries. The author has thus completed the task he had assigned himself; but there still remained another.

The times of Luther were followed by those of Calvin. He, like his great predecessor, undertook to search the Scriptures, and in them he found the same truth and the same life; but a different character distinguishes his work.

The renovation of the individual, of the Church, and of the human race, is his theme. If the Holy Ghost kindles the lamp of truth in man, it is (according to Calvin) 'to the end that the entire man should be transformed.' -- 'In the kingdom of Christ,' he says, 'it is only the new man that flourishes and has any vigor, and whom we ought to take into account.' This renovation is, at the same time, an enfranchisement; and we might assign, as a motto to the reformation accomplished by Calvin, as well as to apostolical Christianity itself, these words of Jesus Christ: The truth shall make you free. (John 8:32)...

The reformation of the sixteenth century restored to the human race what the middle ages had stolen from them; it delivered them from the traditions, laws, and despotism of the papacy; it put an end to the minority and tutelage in which Rome claimed to keep mankind for ever; and by calling upon man to establish his faith not on the word of a priest, but on the infallible Word of God, and by announcing to every one free access to the Father through the new and saving way -- Christ Jesus, it proclaimed and brought about the hour of Christian manhood...

Luther transformed princes into heroes of the faith, and we have described with admiration their triumphs at Augsburg and elsewhere. The reformation of Calvin was addressed particularly to the people, among whom it raised up martyrs until the time came when it was to send forth the spiritual conquerors of the world. For three centuries it has been producing, in the social condition of the nations that have received it, transformations unknown to former times. And still at this very day, and now perhaps more than ever, it imparts to the men who accept it a spirit of power which makes them chosen instruments, fitted to propagate truth, morality, and civilisation to the ends of the earth.

In this extensive chronicle of international Reformation the author has made use of the archives in Geneva, Calvin's Latin letters, numerous French documents of the sixteenth century and many other sources not readily available (especially to English readers). This has greatly increased the value of this work, as a great deal of this information is not available elsewhere in English. Moreover, the broad historical and geographical range (from the Hugenots to the Netherlands to Norway and on) covered herein, coupled with the author's extensive research (in various languages) makes this an unique treasure for those seeking to "walk in the footsteps of the flock" (Song of Solomon 1:8). In fact, there are few other large Reformation histories, written by Calvinists, that rival this set.
