Full SWRB CD comment from Dr. McMahon:

"I have been systematically working through reading the Puritan and Reformed CDs I purchased.

I must say, there is nothing like them available anywhere.

It is the most amazing collection of works I know of in one package to date.

In my opinion, it far surpasses Ages Software and their collections.*

The Puritan and Reformed material presented on these CDs is exceptional.

I am continually amazed at the depth and breadth of information in both collections, and the rarity of works that I now have at my fingertips.

You have done an immeasurable service for the Kingdom of Christ in making these CDs available, and every pastor and theologian should own them without question (they would be foolhardy to pass them by)."

* It is SWRB's opinion that Ages has done an excellent job in making various Reformed works available on CD, so much so that we also distribute a number of their CDs at discounts. Thus, please don't make more out of our publishing this comment than is warranted, as this is a comment we received from one of our customers and it expresses his opinion. As for Ages' work, we rejoice whenever the truth is published, whether through others or through SWRB (as we play only a very small part in the revival of classic Reformation, Puritan and Covenanter thought that is now taking place worldwide through God's marvelous grace). The publication of the best Reformers and Puritans of the past is one of the greatest needs of our time, as this extends the blessings that come through faithful preachers and authors into our day and into the future. Lord willing, the growth in the publishing of faithful works from the past will help stem the tide of the great declension and unfaithfulness which we are now witnessing all around us, even (sadly) among many churches that still call themselves "Presbyterian" and/or "Reformed." So please pray together with us that our Lord will multiple the number of faithful publishers and publications, and that He will give many the heart to stand for the truth no matter the consequences (as He has done for our faithful forefathers, who resisted Satan and sin unto blood and even to martyrdom in many cases). -- RB.

"SWRB's Puritan and Reformation CD libraries are an invaluable source for the study of the history and theology of classic Reformation theology. The collection is remarkable not only for depth of content, but also for the rarity of many of the works. Most seminary libraries will not have even a percentage of the works available on these CD-ROMs. I cannot imagine anyone working in Reformation / historical theology that would not want to use the Puritan and Reformed libraries!"

- Phillip J. Long
Associate Prof. of New Testament
Grace Bible College

"I just received your CD collection. One bit of advice: you should instruct your customers to take about 1 week off just to peruse the tables of contents for these CD's, followed by another week off, in order to recover from the state of shock in which they will find themselves.

In all seriousness, this collection is almost impossible to describe. It has to be seen to be believed. As a pastor, my library has just increased dramatically. As a Ph.D. student in Puritan and Post-Reformation studies, I have immediate access to many of the same works for which I would normally need to access through rare book rooms of theological libraries.

Thank you for this labor of love. Thank you for making it accessible, both financially and technologically. May the Lord richly bless you for this service to his people."

- Yours for the faith,
Pastor David Owen Filson
Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church (PCA), Nashville, TN

"You all are doing a wonderful service by making all these materials so readily available. Having them on my hard drive is BETTER than having access to a rare book library with all of them in hand... I have found the CD set invaluable as a tool of scholarship. So once again I commend you brothers for making it available."

- Dr. E. Calvin Beisner

Examining Contemporary Revivalism, as well as other books, scholarly papers, and contributions to various anthologies).

"It's been several weeks now since I received the CDs and have had some time to digest some of them. All I can say is, "WOW!" This is truly a library like no other, and has already paid great dividends not only in my own personal worship and study, but in my teaching as well. I first balked at the price, but after seeing the vastness of the material, I almost feel as though I'm robbing you!

I pray that the Lord will allow you to get these materials into the hands of as many ministers as possible."

Full SWRB CD comment from Dr. Moore:

This collection of 62 CDs is a truly astounding accomplishment. There is nothing like this available to the ordinary Christian on the whole face of the earth.

Now, for the first time ever, ordinary Christians can have direct and near effortless access to the very cream of Puritan and Reformed, as well as Covenanter, literature.

These books are often in fascinating first editions and many are electronically linked and indexed for the first time. The ordinary Christian may here dig into a simply staggering wealth of literature, from devotional and sermonic material to technical and scholarly works. Even in the days of the Long Reformation itself ordinary Christians didn't get to see this kind of library -- most couldn't read for a start, and even those who could, would never have been able to afford to buy even a hundredth part of the material on these CDs. Truly we are without excuse!

And the significance of this collection goes even beyond that. No longer do we have to wait for modern Reformed publishing houses to predict that a particular Reformation or Puritan book will be sufficiently popular to make it economical to reprint, or to deem it "safe" enough to be let loose on the modern evangelical church. Rather, we are now able to see for ourselves the whole range of the Puritan and Reformed publishing enterprise, including views that are usually suppressed by most modern devotees of "Puritan" piety!

Buy these CDs while you can, and find out for yourself what the First and Second Reformations were really all about! You'll be truly amazed, and, by God's grace, will grow from being an ordinary Christian to being an extraordinary one. What they used to say of the Puritan John Flavel's preaching, can be said of these CDs: they are "hissing hot"!

- Dr Jonathan D. Moore, Cambridge, UK.
(Scholar of 16th and 17th century Calvinistic literature.)

"This side of eternity I'll never be able to repay the favor you have done mankind by bringing these... CDs together.

The first week of reading I grew more as a Christian reading those rich, pure Gospel Commentators than I have in 18 years of Christian life. After reading some of the Puritan CDs I have to get the Reformation set if it kills me. A fire is burning within me. These... CDs are liable to start a revival fire unseen in any generation... the Gospel in its pure form is seen in these... CDs.

Sir, I cant say enough. What a treasure! I'll never be able to repay you this side of heaven, but when we get there I am sure you will see the rich fruits of your labor. God bless you for not being money hungry but wanting to see Christians grow in the Lord... I love you even though we have never met, you have helped me in my Christian walk tremendously with these... CDs.

I am not bragging on the flesh, I am just giving honor where honor is due. The Holy Ghost will take these CDs and light a fire unseen and unheard of. God bless you all at Still Waters."

"Thank you so very much for the CDs.

I am amazed at the quality and quantity of the literature...

I cannot imagine any other single thing being done by any man or group of men in the earth today that is of such extensive, present, and enduring value as this CD work is.

God be praised that he uses sickly and weak men to forward his kingdom, that the work may not be mistaken to be wrought by the might of men, but by his Spirit. His strength is perfected in weakness."

JOHN CALVIN ON SEPARATION FROM FALSE WORSHIP (i.e. worship not based on the second commandment or what is now called the regulative principle of worship) AND WORSHIPPING PRIVATELY (IN YOUR HOME)

Some one will therefore ask me what counsel I would like to give to a believer who thus dwells in some Egypt or Babylon where he may not worship God purely, but is forced by the common practice to accommodate himself to bad things. The first advice would be to leave [i.e. relocate -- GB] if he could. . . . If someone has no way to depart, I would counsel him to consider whether it would be possible for him to abstain from all idolatry in order to preserve himself pure and spotless toward God in both body and soul. Then let him worship God in private, praying him to restore his poor church to its right estate.

Resource 1. McFEETERS, J.C.

Sketches of the Covenanters (1913)

Stirring accounts of sacrifice and martyrdom for the Reformed Faith that will bring tears to eyes of all but the most backslidden.

Follows the chain of events which gave Scotland two Reformations and a Revolution. John Knox, the National Covenant, The Solemn League and Covenant, the Westminster Assembly, the Field Meetings and the "Killing Times," and much more are all covered. The history of many great battles for Christ and His royal rights are accurately recounted in this moving chronicle of Reformation struggles and martyrdom. This book also sheds much light upon the warfare of Christ's bride (with the dragon) for true Scriptural liberty, while telling the story of some of the most prominent Christians (Rutherford, Renwick, Henderson, et al.) since the days of the Apostles. This is one of our best history books, and is highly recommended! It is great for home schooling, history classes and various other learning situations, as it contains convenient review questions at the end of each chapter. Furthermore, it is written in an easy-to-read and engaging style, which makes it one of the best introductions to the Covenanters and the periods of the first and second Reformations in the British Isles. 412 pages.

(Back in print for the first time since 1880)

Resource 2. Merle D'Aubigne, J. H.

History of the Reformation in Europe in the Time of Calvin (8 volumes, 1880 edition)

This engaging set, comprising eight volumes, is the sequel to J.H. Merle D'Aubigne's History of the Reformation of the Sixteenth Century (in 5 Volumes, 1846, [$US34.91, cerlox bound photocopy; $US89.00, Hardcover photocopy]). In his typical easy-to-read, captivating style, the author resumes where he had left off in his other five volumes (which focused more on Luther and the period of Reform up to 1531), entering, in this set, upon the more developed Reformation thought of Calvin, Knox, et al.

The preface (in volume one) of this important work states it this way,

At the conclusion of the preface to the first volume of the History of the Reformation, the author wrote, 'This work will consist of four volumes, or at the most five, which will appear successively.' These five volumes have appeared. In them are described the heroic times of Luther, and the effects produced in Germany and other countries by the characteristic doctrine of that reformer -- justification by faith. They present a picture of that great epoch which contained in the germ the revival of Christianity in the last three centuries. The author has thus completed the task he had assigned himself; but there still remained another.

The times of Luther were followed by those of Calvin. He, like his great predecessor, undertook to search the Scriptures, and in them he found the same truth and the same life; but a different character distinguishes his work.

The renovation of the individual, of the Church, and of the human race, is his theme. If the Holy Ghost kindles the lamp of truth in man, it is (according to Calvin) 'to the end that the entire man should be transformed.' -- 'In the kingdom of Christ,' he says, 'it is only the new man that flourishes and has any vigor, and whom we ought to take into account.' This renovation is, at the same time, an enfranchisement; and we might assign, as a motto to the reformation accomplished by Calvin, as well as to apostolical Christianity itself, these words of Jesus Christ: The truth shall make you free. (John 8:32)...

The reformation of the sixteenth century restored to the human race what the middle ages had stolen from them; it delivered them from the traditions, laws, and despotism of the papacy; it put an end to the minority and tutelage in which Rome claimed to keep mankind for ever; and by calling upon man to establish his faith not on the word of a priest, but on the infallible Word of God, and by announcing to every one free access to the Father through the new and saving way -- Christ Jesus, it proclaimed and brought about the hour of Christian manhood...

Luther transformed princes into heroes of the faith, and we have described with admiration their triumphs at Augsburg and elsewhere. The reformation of Calvin was addressed particularly to the people, among whom it raised up martyrs until the time came when it was to send forth the spiritual conquerors of the world. For three centuries it has been producing, in the social condition of the nations that have received it, transformations unknown to former times. And still at this very day, and now perhaps more than ever, it imparts to the men who accept it a spirit of power which makes them chosen instruments, fitted to propagate truth, morality, and civilisation to the ends of the earth.

In this extensive chronicle of international Reformation the author has made use of the archives in Geneva, Calvin's Latin letters, numerous French documents of the sixteenth century and many other sources not readily available (especially to English readers). This has greatly increased the value of this work, as a great deal of this information is not available elsewhere in English. Moreover, the broad historical and geographical range (from the Hugenots to the Netherlands to Norway and on) covered herein, coupled with the author's extensive research (in various languages) makes this an unique treasure for those seeking to "walk in the footsteps of the flock" (Song of Solomon 1:8). In fact, there are few other large Reformation histories, written by Calvinists, that rival this set.

Resource 3. MILLER, SAMUEL

Doctrinal Integrity: The Utility and Importance of Creeds and Confessions and Adherence to Our Doctrinal Standards

Miller deals with the necessity of written creeds and subscription to them. He shows that the principle doctrines of Scripture are proclaimed in the Westminster Standards and answers common objections against confessions. Creedalism is inescapable, thus this book is of prime importance for those interested in the purity and peace of the church. We bought out all the remaining stock of this title from the publisher, and we have 20 copies remaining. If you want a copy, please order soon to avoid disappointment, as it is unlikely that this title will be available again in the near future (in this format). Resource 4. ELLIOTT, E.B.

Horae Apocalypticae; or, A Commentary on the Apocalypse, Critical and Historical; Including Also An Examination of the Chief Prophecies of Daniel (1862, 4 volumes)

The title continues: "Illustrated by an Apocalyptic Chart, and Engravings from Medals and Other Extant Monuments of Antiquity. With Appendices: Containing, Besides Other matters, A Sketch of the History of Apocalyptic Interpretation, Critical Reviews of the Chief Apocalyptic Counter-Schemes, and Indices." This four volume set is respected by many as a scholarly work on eschatology. It will be especially valuable in our day as it absolutely destroys the Jesuit inspired preterist system by conclusively proving a late date for the writing of the book of Revelation. Elliott also demonstrates the impossibility of the futurist system, which, like preterism, was also concocted (as a system) by the Jesuits to counteract the classic Reformation eschatology called historicism. That this is no small issue is clear, as Kevin Reed exhibits (in his book review titled "The Ecclesiology of John Foxe: A book review by Kevin Reed of John Foxe and the Elizabethan Church by V. Norskov Olsen [Berkeley: University of California Press, 1973]") by citing Olsen when he writes,

The Counter Reformation is generally considered to have three aspects: the Jesuits, the Inquisition, and the Council of Trent. In view of the significance of the Protestant apocalyptic interpretation of history which prophetically pinpointed step by step the events covering the whole Christian era from the beginning to the end, it seems justifiable to suggest a fourth aspect, namely the praeteristic and futuristic interpretations launched by Catholic expositors as a counterattack (p. 47).

All the major Reformers and all the major Reformation creeds and confessions adopted the historicist position -- and it is this position that Elliott so skillfully defends. Included in Horae Apocalypticae you will also find a very useful historical survey of who held which positions concerning eschatology, much history on the Roman empire (and its interaction with Christianity), how the Reformation, Islam, etc. were prophesied in the Apocalypse, a world chronology according to the Hebrew Scriptures (which would make the Earth 6127 years old), patristic views of prophecy, the beast and his mark (666) revealed, and much more. The Papacy is also shown to be the apocalyptic antichrist, which was a standard position among the Reformers. Elliott also deals with Moses Stuart's Preterism.

Sadly, one major warning needs to be given about this book. However valuable the contents are as a defense of historicism (and the late date of the book of Revelation), the author adopted the premillennial heresy and thus marred an otherwise useful work when he promotes these views. 2611 pages, with a 29 page index.

Resource 5. BAYLY, LEWIS

The Practice of Piety (c. 1611, 1842)

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries this work was the most universally read English book on devotion next to Pilgrim's Progress. Bunyan himself ascribes the commencement of his spiritual life in some measure to the perusal of this practical handbook on piety... First published in the early 1600's... by 1792, (it was in) its seventy-first English edition... (It has) appeared in most European languages, including Dutch (1620), French (1625), German (1692), and Polish (1647). New England Puritans even translated it into the Indian language used in Massachusetts (1665)... Bayly's puritan convictions brought him into frequent conflict... in 1621 he was imprisoned for some months for his aversion to the infamous Book of Sports, and for other minor charges... Bayly's Practice of Piety is replete with practical, Puritan guidelines on the pursuit of holy living. The author commences his work with 'a plain description of God [in] his essence, person, and attributes.' He treats the doctrines of God as a basis for piety and divine grace as a ground for every grace which we sinners need. The remainder of the volume deals with the reasons for, and the conditions and objectives of piety... In short, this is a book about how to live well and how to die well... Read The Practice of Piety slowly, meditatively, prayerfully, and, I would recommend annually. Ask yourself repeatedly, 'Am I putting this wise spiritual director's scriptural advice into practice? Am I pursuing holiness -- that holiness without which no man shall please God or be received into the eternal glories of a holy heaven?' (Joel Beeke).

Here is a sample of Bayly's writing,

But God was more displeased with Cain for despairing of his mercy, than for murdering his brother; and with Judas for hanging himself, than for betraying his master: in that they would make the sins of mortal men greater than the infinite mercy of the eternal God; or as if they could be more sinful, than God was merciful: whereas the least drop of Christ's blood is of more merit to procure God's mercy for thy salvation, than all the sins that thou hast committed can be of force to provoke his wrath to thy damnation (The Practice of Piety, pp. 294-295).

Resource 6. M'WARD, ROBERT

A Covenanter's Response to Wicked Rulers in Church and State (and Unjust Taxation); Containing Some Comforting Words to Those Who are Suffering at the Hand of These Beasts, for the Sake of Christ and Truth (1805 edition)

M'Ward was a persecuted and exiled Protester (exiled for preaching, in 1661, "against the overturning of the Covenanted Reformation by Parliament," (Dictionary of Scottish Church History & Theology, p. 538), -- who "collected and arranged the papers of his preceptor, Samuel Rutherford, and gave the world his (Rutherford's--RB) Letters." He "strongly opposed the Resolutions," (and the Resolutioners) and the many other forms of public backsliding and covenant breaking prevalent in his day (Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 342). Walker writes,

Here is a little circle of the exiles in Holland, Brown, Livingstone, M'Ward. How do they occupy themselves in their exile? Well, they do not forget their friends in Scotland. They are kept well informed of all that is taking place in their native land, and they are ever ready with their counsels and encouragements. M'Ward in particular keeps up a busy fire of letter and pamphlets. "The Banders Disbanded," (on how it was scandalous and sinful to obtain a pretended liberty to preach and administer the Sacraments under the wicked rulers of his day--RB), or, "The Poor Man's Cup of Cold Water (Ministered to the Saints and Sufferers for Christ in Scotland, Who Are Amidst the Scorching Flames of the Fiery Trial)," or, "A Testimony Against Paying of the Cess (to an Unjust and Unlawful Government or Wicked Rulers)," vigorously expressed, form a sort of fiery cross among the more resolute of the Scottish suffers... No man had more to do than M'Ward with the indulgence conflicts" (Ibid., p. 342).

All three books mentioned above, by Walker, are contained in this book. These works were written "to encourage resistance to those whom he believed were usurpers of power in the Church of Scotland. He asserted that it was not, as then constituted, 'of the genus Church at all, -- that, by its mere physical force-raid on the real Church of Scotland, it has proved itself to be absolutely devoid of ecclesiastical right,'" notes David Lachman (DSCH&T, p. 538).

The title of the 1805 edition, which is reprinted here, was "A Collection of Tracts"; we have added the new title to better reflect the contents of this volume. 288 pages.

Resource 7. BAIRD, HENRY

History of the Rise of the Huguenots of France (2 volumes, 1886, 1895)

Volume one covers the period from the beginning of the French Reformation to the Edict of January, 1562. Volume two takes in the period from the battle of Coutras to the death of Henry the Fourth (1610). The author notes that

the period of about half a century with which these volumes are concerned may properly be regarded as the formative age of the Huguenots in France. It included the first planting of the reformed doctrines, and the steady growth of the Reformation in spite of obloquy and persecution, whether exercised under the forms of law or vented in lawless violence. It was the gathering and the regular organization of the reformed communities, as well as their consolidation into one of the most orderly and zealous churches of the Protestant family.

The author has made use of manuscripts "previously known to few scholars -- if at all." 1127 pages, including an extensive 26 page index covering both volumes.

Resource 8. BANNERMAN, JAMES

Church of Christ: A Treatise on the Nature, Powers, Ordinances, Discipline, and Government of the Christian Church (1869)

Two large volumes. A classic on the Church and worship! This is one of the most extensive studies of its kind ever compiled. Nothing compares to it on this subject. Regarding these gems, Iain Murray has stated,

In our day, however greatly we need an evangelical revival, we need more than that. We need another Reformation, a movement which will go 'to the root of the mischief' and bring back the visible church to the pattern of God's Word in her government, ordinances and ministry. The republication of Bannerman is a step in that direction... For those who wish to study the doctrine of the Church in its several aspects as it was held by the majority of the Reformers, Puritans, Covenanters and leaders of 'The Third Reformation,' it will prove an invaluable textbook.

Volume one deals with the nature and power of the church, containing a lengthy explanation of the Church in its relation to the state (which is one of the best treatments of this topic to be found anywhere!). From there it deals with matters in regard to which church power is exercised (i.e. in regard to doctrine, ordinances, the instrumentality and time of public worship -- with a discussion of holy days, Independency, and confessions). Volume two continues where volume one left off, providing a lengthy section on the sacraments, covering the parties in whom the right to exercise church power is vested, examining crucial points concerning Christian liberty, comparing the Popish, Prelatic, Independent, Congregational and Presbyterian systems, etc. Nine appendices deal with a wide range of practical topics including union between churches, church/state relations, ordination, and valuable notes on the literature related to this subject. If you are interested in Church issues, it is not likely that you will find a better set.

Saul in the Cave of Adullam: A Testimony Against the Fashionable Sub-Calvinism of Doug Wilson (Editor of Credenda/Agenda Magazine); and, for Classical Protestantism and the Attainments of the Second Reformation

Demonstrates in an email debate (of 170, 8.5 inch by 11 inch, pages) between Doug Wilson (editor of Credenda/Agenda magazine) and Reg Barrow (president of Still Waters Revival Books) how violations of the regulative principle of worship (i.e. the second commandment) are grounds for excommunication. Also gives specific examples of how modern "Reformed" Christians (e.g. John Frame) and denominations are in violation of the second commandment and are tolerating false and idolatrous worship contrary to their own Confessional standards and vows. Contains many quotations from major Reformation works and confessions in defense of the regulative principle of worship representing the classical Protestant position on worship.

Resource 10. BAXTER, RICHARD

A Christian Directory

Over 950 (8.5 inch by 11 inch) pages long, Dr. Timothy Keller calls this "the greatest manual on Biblical counseling ever produced." John MacAurthur writes, "We have long waited for a purely Biblical treatment of the spiritual ills and cures of men which is untainted by the views of psychology. Since Baxter lived about 200 years before psychology arrived, his deep work is completely void of its encroachment -- thankfully!"

The sub-titles gives a good summary of the book, being, "A Sum of Practical Theology and Cases of Conscience. Directing Christians How to Use Their Knowledge and Faith; How to Improve all Helps and Means, and to Perform all Duties; How to Overcome Temptations, and to Escape or Mortify Every Sin. In Four Parts: 1.) Christian Ethics (or Private Duties); 2.) Christian Economics (or Family Duties); 3.) Christian Ecclesiatics (or Church Duties); 4.) Christian politics (or Duties to Our Rulers and Neighbors)."

Ptacek, in Family Worship (pp. 51-52), supplies the following information in regard to Baxter and this book. He notes that after the Episcopalians ejected numerous "nonconformists," in what is know as the "great ejection,' in 1662,

Baxter pastored from house to house, visiting families of his parish in their homes. These visits contributed to Baxter's A Christian Directory, a large and still very relevant manual of pastoral care." Focusing on just one area of great importance, Ptacek demonstrates how this book's relevance is not limited by time or culture, though sometimes the use of specific words are. "Published in 1673, but written 1664-65, a large book-length part of Baxter's Christian Directory is devoted to the family. It is entitled 'Christian Economics' based on the archaic usage of the word, which reflects the proper sense of the Greek root oikonomos as the manager of a household, in the Christian case, the spiritual leader of the family. The family head is essential to Baxter's view of family worship and instruction. Baxter asserts that it is God's will that this instruction be carried out by 'the rulers of the families.' For a male head of the household to fail to do so, or to have another instruct in the family, is contrary to his position of authority.

This is the kind of book that can be passed on from generation to generation and still find much use in the service of the kingdom of God. Great price too!

Resource 11. BROOKS, THOMAS

The Mute Christian Under the Smarting Rod; With Sovereign Antidotes for Every Case (1811)

Subtitled: "A Christian with an Olive Leaf in His Mouth, When Under the Greatest Afflictions, Trials, Troubles, and Darkest Providences; With Answers to Questions and Objections, Calculated to Promote Submission and Silence Under All the Changes that May Be Experienced in this World." A Puritan look at the perplexing and sometimes disconcerting subject of dealing in a godly manner with those trials and afflictions which frequently beset the saints. This is an important book for all Christians who seek to maintain a faithful testimony by adding patience and godliness to moderation (cf. 2 Peter 1:6-7); and who constantly wage war with the world, the flesh and the devil. If you have ever complained, become angry, or let the flame of your first love grow dim because of the trials of this life, this book should be a great encouragement and help. Brooks also wrote Precious Remedies Against Satan's Devices ($9.95 from SWRB). In the preface to Precious Remedies it is noted that he was among the leading Puritan preachers/authors and that "some few might even award him a topmost niche among the choicest spirits of the seventeenth century." 250 pages.

Resource 12. DARLING, JAMES

Cyclopaedia Bibliographica: A Library Manual of Theological and General Literature, and Guide to Books for Authors, Preachers, Students and Literary Men. Analytical, Bibliographical, and Biographical (1854, 10 volumes)

An indispensable set for authors, researchers, serious students of Scripture, librarians, ministers, collectors, rare book dealers, etc. Contains much information that is either unavailable elsewhere or would have to be gleaned from several scattered volumes. Its ten volumes total 5245 pages. A phenomenal, theological, bibliographical resource of staggering comprehensiveness. The first section of this extremely rare set is a huge bibliography, organized by authors alphabetically. Most known Biblical and theological publications, to the author's day, are listed. Includes not only English listings, but Latin, French and German also. The second part is a topical bibliography categorizing items under the headings of Universal Knowledge, Theology (including the major commentaries, sermons, articles and studies for just about every verse in the Bible), a listing of Scripture texts (Hebrew, Greek and Latin) and an extensive index. The Morning Post calls this massive work "the most copious, accurate, and well-arranged catalogue of works in theological and general literature which has as yet been published." Brownson's Review noted that "for practical utility we know of none that surpasses or approaches it." Finally Bell's Messenger states, "No clergyman or antiquarian should think it needless to possess a copy of this work. It will smooth many a day's hard toil, by diminishing the labour of research, pointing as it does, in an instant to works which it might have taken weeks, if not months, or years, to search after." Don't miss this darling of a help, which will ease and aid all your theological studies!

Darling calls this "a labourious and valuable work, of very rare occurrence" (Cyclopaedia Bibliographica, p. 1295). "We greatly prize Gouge," writes Spurgeon of this commentary, "upon any topic which he touches he gives outlines which may supply sermons for months" (Commenting on Commentaries). Gouge was a leader among the Covenanted English Presbyterians, a respected member of the Westminster Assembly and one of its most active members. Some of his enemies vilified him as an "Arch Puritan." 1162 pages of the cream of Puritan-style commentating.

Resource 15. CALVIN, JOHN

Calvin's Selected Works (7 Volumes)

These remarkable volumes contain Calvin's tracts and letters. They clearly exhibit why Calvin was one of the great saints (who defended the regulative principle of worship) and why his work was singularly blessed of God. Understanding these works will shed much light on our current situation; for many in the professed Christian community live in as great (or greater) darkness today than those who were contemporaries of Calvin. This set contains such classics as "The Necessity of Reforming the Church," "The Catechism of the Church of Geneva," "An Antidote Against Trent," "The Sinfulness of Outward Conformity to Romish Rites" and much more. Calvin's only letter to Luther, his letters to Knox, Bullinger, Beza and a host of other Reformers, along with Beza's 100 page Life of Calvin are also all included. Indexed, 3507 pages.

Resource 17. DIODATI, JOHN

Pious and Learned Annotations Upon the Holy Bible Plainly Expounding the Most Difficult Places Thereof By that Godly and Famous Divine, Mr. John Diodati, Late Minister of the Gospel in Geneva (third edition [in two volumes], 1651)

The title continues: "Corrected and much augmented, with additional notes of the same author, throughout the whole work. And the analysis upon each several book of the Old and New Testament, setting down the chief heads contained therein, being very much enlarged, is now fully completed in this third edition." "These Annotations were first written in Italian, by a reverend Protestant Divine of the Church of Geneva, the most reformed in all France, and famous for the great lights of it, John Calvin, Theodore Beza, and this renowned John Diodati, their successor both in place and eminent erudition.... In fine, here are choice Meditations, and sound expositions, more to be valued then refined gold... and the choicest subject the world ever afforded, being Jesus Christ and him crucified, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life" (Translator from "To the Reader"). Concerning Diodati, Darling (Cyclopaedia Bibliographica, p. 918) writes, "Born at Geneva 1576; died 1640. This celebrated Italian Protestant divine, belonging to a noble family from Lucca in Italy, is known chiefly by his biblical works, and by his translation of Father Paul's History of the Council of Trent into French. He was sent in 1618 by the Church of Geneva to the Synod of Dort. His translation of the Bible into Italian is still considered one of the best." Regarding these Annotations in particular Darling further notes, "Short, but comprehensive practical annotations; many of them were introduced into the (Westminster--RB) Assembly's Annotations. The above (i.e. the third edition--RB) is the best edition." Richard Baxter, in compiling a list of the most essential books for Christian edification, after listing the Bible and a Concordance, counseled Christians to obtain "a sound Commentary or Annotations, either Diodati's, the English (or Westminster--RB) Annotations, or the Dutch (A Christian Directory, p. 732). 1104 pages.

Resource 18. REFORMED CHILDREN'S BOOKS

Children love these colorfully illustrated Bible stories written by Carine Mackenzie. These books contain NO pictures of Christ and come from a Reformed publisher. They are finely crafted and can stand up to the "hard use" that they will sometimes meet at the hands of younger children. Because of the expensive type of paper used (and especially the glossy covers) these books can weather some staining by liquids (however, they are not indestructible). These features are especially helpful when you you have a "full quiver," and some of your "arrows," in the pre-reading years, have got use of their hands and legs to the extent that they are quite mobile -- but are still young enough to handle books somewhat roughly. These are among the best books for younger children, regarding both content and durability, that we have found.

Resource 20. BROWN, JOHN (of Wamphray)

The Life of Justification Opened (1695)

The title continues: "Or, a Treatise grounded upon Gal. 2.11. Wherein the Orthodox Doctrine of Justification by Faith, & Imputation of Christ's Righteousness, is clearly expounded, solidly confirmed, & learnedly vindicated from the various Objections of its Adversaries. Whereunto are subjoined some Arguments against Universal Redemption." In 1828 Dr. Burns wrote, "Mr. John Brown was unquestionably one of the most eminent divines Scotland has yet produced, as his numerous writings, still carefully sought after by solid and judicious Christians, fully envince" (Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 339). Regarding this book Dr. Walker noted, "By far our most thorough exposition and discussion of the doctrine it handles; and all the more to be prized because of the particular bearing it has on the new views which Baxter and others had begun to propagate, and which in some shape are ever returning upon ourselves" (Ibid., p. 341). Interestingly, Brown, in the preface, after warning against Arminianism "as the immediate way to introduce Popery" states, "Yea even those who were purer in appearance, pressing the moral duties and practical doctrine of piety (I mean the followers of that famous Minister Mr. Richard Baxter) did corrupt the true doctrine of justification, because they adopted universal grace and redemption." One of the best, if not the best, books ever written on the topic of justification! 563 pages.

Resource 21. BROWN, JOHN (of Wamphray)

A Pious and Elaborate Treatise Concerning Prayer; & the Answer of Prayer (1745 edition)

"The clear and Scriptural ardency of his piety from this well-know treatise is apparent" wrote Burns, concerning this title (Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 342. The publisher's preface notes that this was the mature work of one who had suffered much for Christ. They state it "is among his last works; which he wrote at the close of a long walk with God; and in exile; while he was in Holland about 20 years, from his banishment (Anno 1661) until he ended his days, and entered into the joy of the Lord... Moreover the gentleman, now a minister, who procured this practical treatise of prayer, in Holland, and brought it home, can attest that it is genuine; and though many pieces on the subject be come abroad before this, yet the intelligent Reader may find it is inferior to none, and in some respects, preferable to any of them." Sample chapters include: "The greatness of the sin of neglecting prayer, manifested, in 39 particulars;" "The Unregenerate are obliged to pray;" "The necessity and usefulness of family prayer, manifested:" "Some encouragements to prayer mentioned;" and much more. It is for works such as these that Johnston (in The Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 339) says of Brown that "(h)e has been regarded (as) the most important theologian of the second period of Scottish Presbyterianism." Joel Beeke concurs, writing, "John Brown of Wamphray (1610-1679) has been rightly called the most important Scottish theologian of his day. He was especially gifted at merging profound doctrinal truth with warm Christ-centered zeal and godly piety. Samuel Rutherford wrote of him, 'I always [had]... a great love to dear Mr. John Brown because I thought I saw Christ in him more than in his brethren.'" 308 pages.

Resource 22. BAILLIE, ROBERT

Letters and Journals of Robert Baillie (3 volumes, 1841 edition)

David Laing, ed. (three large volumes, 1841 ed.). Baillie was one of the Scottish delegates to the Westminster Assembly and these volumes cover the period from 1637 to 1662 -- some of the most momentous days in the history of the Reformed faith. These letters contain an intimate insider's look at these days of international religious drama, national covenants, and the writing of the greatest religious Confession ever given to men, the Westminster Confession of Faith ($US19.98 hardcover; $US14.98 softcover). A major source for 17th century Church history and a totally unique compilation -- peering into the very heart of Reformation! "Baillie was a keen Resolutioner, but lived to see his mistake. To this he refers in the last of his Letters, 'We are in the most hard taking we have seen at any time. It is the matter of my daily grief, and I think it has brought all my trouble on me, and I fear it shall do me more harm.' The work is of immense historical value" (Johnston, The Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 312). Cunningham is also cited by Johnston regarding this work, "His Letter and Journals furnish us with some pictures, as lifelike as photographs, of the principal actors then on the stage of affairs, and not unfrequently gives us a peep of what was passing behind the scenes. It is the book of all others to be read by those who would understand the period of the Covenant." About 1700 pages.

Resource 23. BUSHELL, MICHAEL

The Songs of Zion: A Contemporary Case for Exclusive Psalmody

Contains one of the best explanations of the Scriptural law of worship (also known as the regulative principle of worship) in print today

. For this and a number of other reasons this is one of the most significant books published this century concerning worship! Furthermore, it demonstrates and defends (from Scripture, history and the creeds) the Reformation practice of exclusive Psalmody. It dovetails splendidly with Eire's celebrated War Against the Idols, setting forth foundational principles that lay at the very heart of Reformation thought, theology and practice. For as Bushell points out, "Purity of worship and uniformity of worship go hand in hand because they are both founded upon the assumption that the Scriptures contain clear, sufficient and authoritative directions as to the proper way of worshiping God. The diversity of worship practice that we see in our churches arises ultimately from a denial of this assumption, and it constitutes, therefore, a denial of a central aspect of the doctrine of the sufficiency of Scripture. There is much more at stake, then, in this whole discussion than the mere observance or non-observance of a few external rites" (2nd edition, 1993, p. 3). If you are a Calvinist and have not read this book, you are missing a real treat!

Volume Two of The Presbyterian's Armoury

Gillespie is most famous for his Aaron's Rod which Walker called "the chef d'oeuvre" of Scottish ecclesiastical theology (cited in Cameron, Dictionary, p. 359-360). He was a thundering preacher and a prominent member of the famous Westminster Assembly. Johnston, in The Treasury of the Scottish Covenant cites the following concerning Gillespie: "That is an excellent youth; my heart blesses God in his behalf. There is no man whose parts in a public dispute I do so admire. He has studied so accurately all the points that are yet to come to our Assembly; he has got so ready, so assured, so solid a way of public debating; that however there be in the Assembly divers very excellent men, yet, in my poor judgement, there is not one who speaks more rationally and to the point than that brave youth has done ever (Baillie from his Letters and Journals [3 volume Hardcover photocopy OUT OF PRINT $US119.00; 3 vol. cerlox bound photocopy $US74.98). He was one of the great men that had a chief hand in penning our most excellent Confession of Faith and Catechisms. He was a most grave and bold man, and had a most wonderful gift given him for disputing and arguing. The end of a dispute held by him with some of the promoters of the Engagement was, that Glencairn said, "There is no standing before this great and mighty man." He was called malleus Malignantium, "the hammer of the Malignants'" (Woodrow's Analecta). 558 pages.

Volume Three of The Presbyterian's Armoury

Contains: Samuel Rutherford's Lex, Rex, or the Law and the Prince; John Brown of Wamphray's Apologetical Relation; David Calderwood's Pastor and Prelate, or Reformation and Conformity Shortly Compared; and Causes of the Lord's Wrath Against Scotland agreed upon by the General Assembly, 1651. Lex, Rex is "the great political text of the Covenanters" (Johnston citing Innes, Treasury, p. 305.) "Rutherford was the first to formulate the great constitutional principle Lex est Rex -- the law is King... much of the doctrine has become the constitutional inheritance of all countries in modern times" (Idem.). Brown's anti-prelatical work deals with the lawfulness of defensive wars, ecclesiastical and civil government, the hearing of curates, etc. Brown's writing has been said to be "decidedly superior to most of the Scottish writers of his day, and even to Owen." Calderwood upholds Presbyterianism over and against prelacy. The Causes of the Lord's's Wrath was written anonymously (James Guthrie was the reputed author), and was at one time burnt along with Lex, Rex. 615 pages.

Resource 25. RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL

Christ Dying, and Drawing Sinners to Himself (1647, 1727 edition)

The title continues (providing a nice summary for this rare valuable work): "Or, A Survey of our Saviour in His Soul-Suffering, His Loveliness in his Death, and the Efficacy thereof. In Which Some Cases of Soul-trouble in weak Believers, Grounds of Submission under the Absence of Christ, with the Flowings and Heightenings of free Grace, are opened. Delivered in Sermons on the Gospel according to John, Chap. xii. ver. 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33. Where are also interjected some necessary Digressions, for the Times, touching divers Errors of Antinomians; and a short Vindication of the Doctrine of Protestants, from the Arminian pretended Universality of Christ's Dying for All and every One of Mankind; the moral and feigned Way of irresistable Conversion of Sinners; and what Faith is required of all within the visible Church, for the Want whereof, many are condemned." The Dictionary of Scottish Church History and Theology says of this work, "Rutherford's writings during the London years provide a significant commentary of the theology of the Westminster Confession and Catechisms. In Christ Dying and Drawing Sinners to Himself Rutherford elaborately scrutinizes the Antinomian notion that the law has no obligation for the Christian" (p. 736). This book contains an extensive index, is 760 pages in length and is an excellent example of sound and faithful Covenanter preaching, balancing both faith (doctrine) and manners (practice). Classic Rutherford!

Resource 27. GUTHRIE, WILLIAM

The Works of Mr. William Guthrie (1771)

Two accounts of the author's life (by Dunlop and Wodrow) and Trail's "Recommendatory preface" open this volume. Part one of the book includes The Christian's Great Interest: In Two Parts, 1. The Trial of a Saving Interest in Christ. 2. The Way how to attain it. Part two binds in "Five Sermons on particular occasions." In part three we find "A Treatise on Ruling Elders and Deacons; in which these things which belong to the understanding of their office are clearly set down." Part three was not written by William Guthrie, but by his cousin, James Guthrie (Christ's faithful martyr "who championed the cause of the Protesters and strongly upheld the principles of the Covenant," Dictionary of Scottish Church History and Theology, p. 382).

William Guthrie "served as moderator of the Protester Synod of Glasgow and Ayr in 1654" (DSCHT, p. 382). Regarding Guthrie, Robert Trail (in his preface) points out that "it pleased the Lord, who had separated him from his mother's womb, to call him by his grace, by the ministry of excellent Mr. Samuel Rutherford, and this young gentleman became the first-fruits of his (Rutherford's--RB) ministry at St. Andrews" (p. xliv). William Guthrie has been called "the greatest practical preacher in Scotland." "John Owen spoke of Guthrie as 'one of the greatest divines that ever wrote' and said his The Christian's Great Interest ($US9.56) contained 'more divinity' than all his own folios" (DSCHT, p. 382). Thomas Chalmers said that it was the best book that he had ever read. Many editions have appeared in numerous languages. 394 pages.
