"I
have been systematically working through reading the Puritan and Reformed CDs I
purchased.
I must say, there is nothing like them
available anywhere.
It is the most amazing collection of works I
know of in one package to date.
In
my opinion, it far surpasses Ages Software and their collections.*
The
Puritan and Reformed material presented on these CDs is exceptional.
I
am continually amazed at the depth and breadth of information in both
collections, and the rarity of works that I now have at my fingertips.
You
have done an immeasurable service for the Kingdom of Christ in making these CDs
available, and every pastor and theologian should own them without question
(they would be foolhardy to pass them by)."

* It is SWRB's
opinion that Ages has done an excellent job in making various Reformed works
available on CD, so much so that we also distribute a number of their CDs at
discounts. Thus, please don't make more out of our publishing this comment than
is warranted, as this is a comment we received from one of our customers and it
expresses his opinion. As for Ages' work, we rejoice whenever the truth is
published, whether through others or through SWRB (as we play only a very small
part in the revival of classic Reformation, Puritan and Covenanter thought that
is now taking place worldwide through God's marvelous grace). The publication
of the best Reformers and Puritans of the past is one of the greatest needs of
our time, as this extends the blessings that come through faithful preachers
and authors into our day and into the future. Lord willing, the growth in the
publishing of faithful works from the past will help stem the tide of the great
declension and unfaithfulness which we are now witnessing all around us, even
(sadly) among many churches that still call themselves "Presbyterian"
and/or "Reformed." So please pray together with us that our Lord will
multiple the number of faithful publishers and publications, and that He will
give many the heart to stand for the truth no matter the consequences (as He
has done for our faithful forefathers, who resisted Satan and sin unto blood
and even to martyrdom in many cases). -- RB.
"SWRB's
Puritan and Reformation CD libraries are an invaluable source for the study of
the history and theology of classic Reformation theology. The collection is
remarkable not only for depth of content, but also for the rarity of many of
the works. Most seminary libraries will not have even a percentage of the works
available on these CD-ROMs. I cannot imagine anyone working in Reformation /
historical theology that would not want to use the Puritan and Reformed
libraries!"

"I
just received your CD collection. One bit of advice: you should instruct your
customers to take about 1 week off just to peruse the tables of contents for
these CD's, followed by another week off, in order to recover from the
state of shock in which they will find themselves.
In
all seriousness, this collection is almost impossible to describe. It has to be
seen to be believed. As a pastor, my library has just increased
dramatically.
As a Ph.D. student in Puritan and Post-Reformation studies, I have immediate
access to many of the same works for which I would normally need to access
through rare book rooms of theological libraries.
Thank
you for this labor of love. Thank you for making it accessible, both
financially and technologically. May the Lord richly bless you for this service
to his people."

"You
all are doing a wonderful service by making all these materials so readily
available. Having them on my hard drive is BETTER than having access to a
rare book library with all of them in hand... I have found the CD set
invaluable as a tool of scholarship. So once again I commend you brothers for making
it available."

"It's
been several weeks now since I received the CDs and have had some time to
digest some of them. All I can say is, "WOW!" This is truly a
library like no other, and has already paid great dividends not only in my own
personal worship and study, but in my teaching as well. I first balked at the
price, but after seeing the vastness of the material, I almost feel as though
I'm robbing you!
I
pray that the Lord will allow you to get these materials into the hands of as
many ministers as possible."

Full
SWRB CD comment from Dr. Moore:
This
collection of 62 CDs is a truly astounding accomplishment. There is nothing
like this available to the ordinary Christian on the whole face of the earth.
Now,
for the first time ever, ordinary Christians can have direct and near
effortless access to the very cream of Puritan and Reformed, as well as
Covenanter, literature.
These
books are often in fascinating first editions and many are electronically
linked and indexed for the first time. The ordinary Christian may here dig
into a simply staggering wealth of literature, from devotional and sermonic
material to technical and scholarly works. Even in the days of the Long Reformation
itself ordinary Christians didn't get to see this kind of library -- most
couldn't read for a start, and even those who could, would never have been able
to afford to buy even a hundredth part of the material on these CDs. Truly we
are without excuse!
And
the significance of this collection goes even beyond that. No longer do we have
to wait for modern Reformed publishing houses to predict that a particular
Reformation or Puritan book will be sufficiently popular to make it economical
to reprint, or to deem it "safe" enough to be let loose on the modern
evangelical church. Rather, we are now able to see for ourselves the whole
range of the Puritan and Reformed publishing enterprise, including views that
are usually suppressed by most modern devotees of "Puritan" piety!
Buy
these CDs while you can, and find out for yourself what the First and Second
Reformations were really all about! You'll be truly amazed, and, by God's
grace, will grow from being an ordinary Christian to being an extraordinary
one. What they used to say of the Puritan John Flavel's preaching, can be
said of these CDs: they are "hissing hot"!

"This
side of eternity I'll never be able to repay the favor you have done mankind by
bringing these... CDs together.
The
first week of reading I grew more as a Christian reading those rich, pure
Gospel Commentators than I have in 18 years of Christian life. After reading some of
the Puritan CDs I have to get the Reformation set if it kills me. A fire is
burning within me. These... CDs are liable to start a revival fire unseen in
any generation... the Gospel in its pure form is seen in these... CDs.
Sir,
I cant say enough. What a treasure! I'll never be able to repay you this side
of heaven, but when we get there I am sure you will see the rich fruits of your
labor. God bless you for not being money hungry but wanting to see Christians
grow in the Lord... I love you even though we have never met, you have
helped me in my Christian walk tremendously with these... CDs.
I
am not bragging on the flesh, I am just giving honor where honor is due. The
Holy Ghost will take these CDs and light a fire unseen and unheard of. God
bless you all at Still Waters."

"Thank
you so very much for the CDs.
I am amazed at the quality and quantity of
the literature...
I
cannot imagine any other single thing being done by any man or group of men in
the earth today that is of such extensive, present, and enduring value as
this CD work is.
God
be praised that he uses sickly and weak men to forward his kingdom, that the
work may not be mistaken to be wrought by the might of men, but by his Spirit.
His strength is perfected in weakness."

Good News in Evil Times For
Fainting Believers (1708)
"These forgoing sermons were preached by
Mr. Michael Bruce in his best days, when in prison
(suffering as a Covenanter for the crown rights of King Jesus, under the false
charge of sedition--RB)," notes the final sentence in this book. These
three sermons cover Jeremiah 45:1-5 and Psalm 140:12-13 (two sermons) and were preached for the encouragement of believers during
the most trying of times (when believing the whole counsel of God
could cost you dearly). 72 pages.

Resource 2. STEELE,
DAVID, editor
The Contending Witness, The
Reformation Advocate and The Original Covenanter magazines
The following list of magazines, edited by David
Steele, comprise what is likely the best compilation
of Christian periodicals ever amassed under one set of bindings. Nothing
we know of (before or since), authored as magazine articles related to
full-orbed nation shaking biblical Reformation, even comes close to the
consistent quality of writing found in these short works on various subjects. Steele himself should probably be considered the best
theologian of the nineteenth century, and the other contributors to these
magazines were all approaching the same class. A healthy portion of
Steele's writing is found in these magazines, as he only wrote a few other
books, so the reader is encouraged to sample for himself some of the best
writing (defending the Covenanted Reformation) you will find anywhere!

Resource 3. FABER,
GEORGE S.
A Dissertation on the
Prophecies, That Have Been Fulfilled, Are Now Fulfilling, or Will Hereafter Be
Fulfilled Relative to the Great Period of 1260 Years; The Papal and Mohammedan
Apostacies; The Tyrannical Reign of Antichrist, or the Infidel Power; and the
Restoration of the Jews (2 volumes, 1811)
Defends classic historicist
postmillennialism and its position relative to the 1260 year period mentioned
in Scripture. In the author's words, "(t)reats of a subject
peculiarly interesting to every serious Protestant: for the famous period of
1260 prophetic days, so frequently mentioned by Daniel and St. John,
comprehends the tyrannical reign of those three great opponents of the Gospel:
Popery, Mohammedism, and Infidelity. This period indeed may not improperly be
styled the permitted hour of the powers of darkness; since the Church is represented as being in an afflicted
and depressed state during the whole of its continuance, and since its
expiration will be marked by a signal display of the judgments of God upon his
enemies and by the commencement of a new and happy order of things." Understanding the Reformation position on eschatology,
as it is set forth in this work, gives us great insight into as to why the
Romanists (i.e. the Jesuits in particular) were so intent on planting both
Preterism (Alcasar, c. 1615) and Futurism (Ribera, c. 1585) among the
Protestants. 583 pages.

Acts & Monuments or
Foxe's Book of Martyrs (c. 1554; 8 volumes, 1843-49 edition)
"No book ever inflicted a wound so deep
and incurable on the Romish system of superstition & bloody persecution... (it) was placed in...
all churches and chapels throughout the kingdom, by order of Queen
Elizabeth." (Smith, Select Memoirs [$US19.99 P; $US29.00 HP], p. 245). Contains much information not found in any of the liberally
edited & severely shortened editions of this classic work which are in
print today. Covering martyrs from the early church through to Foxe's
day, it was one of the most influential books of the sixteenth century! It overflows with faith
building testimony of the power of God to overcome the most cruel &
barbarous acts of human depravity & demonic cruelty. 6890 pages. A very rare set, now back in print after 150 years!

DOUGLAS, JAMES
Strictures on Occasional
Hearing (1820, second edition)
An inquiry into Song 1:7, "Why should I be
as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions?" This book sets out to demonstrates the proposition that
one should not hear the public preaching of those he can not take communion
with (i.e. it proposes a ban on occasionally hearing those with whom you can
not maintain organic fellowship with). The implications contained in
this truth are immense; especially when one has adopted the Biblical doctrine
of close communion and is set upon upholding the covenanted reformation. The
duty to separation and to true visible unity are all encompassed here. A review of this book,
written in 1818, notes that the "treatise may
be viewed as a complete repository of all that has yet been said on the subject."
It is filled with Scriptural, as well as historical testimony, and is a welcome
tonic to the weak and compromising books of our day that so often sacrifice the
truth on the altar of some other man made expediency (such as unity for
political or ecclesiastical advantage). For as the introduction notes, "It is the revealed will of God, and not saintship,
which is the only rule of a visible profession." That
Christians exist in other denominations is not denied, but that they are
faithful to the covenanted reformation (already historically obtained) is. The
arguments set forth here are reminiscent of those found in Rutherford's Due
Right of Presbyteries.
If you are struggling with questions related to
separation, the unity of the visible church, close communion, etc. this book
may be exactly what you've been looking for. A massive appendix also
lays out the historical testimony concerning this matter. 144 pages.

BURGESS, ANTHONY
The Reformation of the
Church, To Be Endeavoured More Than That of the Commonwealth (1645)
A "Sermon preached before the
Right Honourable House of Lords at the publicke Fast, August 27, 1645,"
(notes the cover) during the days of the sitting of the Westminster Assembly. Can you
image these words (which are just a small sample from the preface to the godly
exhortation contained in this sermon) directed, by request of the civil
magistrate, to the leaders of your nation? Burgess writes, "It was my
endeavour in this Sermon to excite your Lordships to a speedy and exact
Reformation of the Church from all the corruptions that have defiled her, and
herein to attend unto God's Word, as the only starre that will conduct unto
Christ. None are too great to undertake so good a work. Gregory said of David
dancing before the Ark, Magis miror Davidum saltantem, quam pugnantem, David is to be more
admired in his religious worship of God, than in his courageous conquest and
slaughter of the Philistines, or other enemies. Hence, Jer. 9:23,24.
where glory in wisdome, riches and might is forbidden, there is a kinde of an
holy pride allowed in the knowledge of the Lord. Let Heathens glory, that they
are saluted by the Common-wealth, Patres Pariae; but let those Christians, whom God honoureth with
dignity and place, delight to be nursing Fathers to the Church, by speaking
comfortably unto those who teach the good knowledge of God; and by commanding
the Levites to carry all the filthiness out of the Temple. Which
that your Lordships may faithfully and zealously doe, is the prayer of Your
Lordships humble Servant, Anthony Burgesse." 28 pages.

Distinctive Principles of the
Reformed Presbyterian Church (1841)
This book is not designed to discuss "the
(many-RB) doctrines which the Reformed Presbyterian church holds in common will
others," but is written to set forth RP distinctives. It tackles its subject from three major heads:
"Social Covenanting;" "The Dominion of Christ;" and
"The Universal Application of Scripture (civil as well as religious)." It shows that while
these doctrines "are held by many, as abstract doctrines of divine truth,
they are not embodied in the testimony of any other Christian denomination: nor
made necessary to ministerial or Christian fellowship. Although other
individuals may hold these doctrine, it is a 'distinctive' feature of the RPC
to embody them in her testimony; and to make them terms of communion." It also explains how these are the same distinctives
that were maintained "at the era of the reformation, (when) the covenanted
church of Scotland bore a distinguished testimony for all the offices of
Christ, as prophet, priest and king: and for the pure doctrines, worship,
discipline, and government of the house of God." The author
states that "the great object aimed at is to help forward the glorious
triumph of the Messiah, so beautifully described in the 72nd Psalm. When 'all
Kings shall fall down before him; and all nations shall serve him.'" 325

REFORMED PRESBYTERY
Auchensaugh Renovation of the
National Covenant and Solemn League and Covenant; with the Acknowledgement of
Sins and Engagement to Duties as they were Renewed at Auchensaugh in 1712...
Also the Renovation of These Public Federal Deeds Ordained at Philadelphia,
Oct. 8, 1880, By the Reformed Presbytery, With Accommodation of the Original
Covenants, in Both Transactions, to their Times and Positions Respectively (1880
ed.)
"In 1712, at Auchensaugh, the Covenants,
National and Solemn League, were renewed... At the renewal the covenant bonds
were recognized as binding the descendants of those who first entered into
those bonds. The Covenanters, however, sought to display the true intent of
those Covenants with marginal notes. These notes
explained that the Church of Jesus Christ, in Scotland (and around the world),
must not join hands with any political power in rebellion to the crown rights
of King Jesus. The Covenanters pledged the Covenanted Reformed
Presbyterian Church to the support of lawful magistracy (i.e. magistracy which
conformed itself to the precepts of God's Word) and declared themselves and
their posterity against support of any power, in Church or State, which lacked
biblical authority." (From "About the Covenanted Reformed
Presbyterian Church" newsletter). An excellent introduction (historical
and moral) regarding the reasons, motives and manner of fulfilling the duty of
covenanting with God. Especially helpful concerning the Biblical view of the
blessings (for covenant-keepers) and cursings (for covenant breakers) related
to covenanting. As noted on page 37, "the
godly usually in times of great defection from the purity and power of religion,
and corruption of the ordinances of God's worship, set about renewing their
covenant, thereby to prevent covenant curses, and procure covenant blessing; as
we find both in scripture record, 2 Chron. 15:12-13; 29:10; 34:30-31; Ezra
10:3, and in our own ecclesiastical history." Times like ours
certainly call for a revival of the Scriptural ordinance of covenanting, for
"[t]he nations throughout Christendom, continue in league with Antichrist
and give their strength to the beast. They still refuse to profess and defend
the true religion in doctrine, worship, government and discipline, contrary to
the example of the kingdoms of Scotland, England and Ireland in the seventeenth
century" (p. 136 in this book). This is
one of the most important Covenanter documents and a part of the true
Covenanted church's judicial standards.140 pages.

The Westminster Assembly's
Shorter Catechism Explained, By Way of Question and Answer (1753, 1911 edition)
The title continues: "Wherein it is essayed
to bring forth the truths of God contained in that excellent composure, more fully
than has been attempted in any one of the explicatory Catechisms hitherto
published...." Dr. M'Crie writes, "(t)his
well-known work was very generally employed by ministers as their test-book at
the public examinations of their people, when both old and young were duly
catechised. This was, in fact, a profound system of divinity, and was
especially devoted to an explanation of the Marrow doctrines"
(cited in the Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 474). Mackay notes
that it "displays a rich fund of sound
theological practical erudition; and it soon became, and still continues to be,
the favorite religious manual in thousands of Scotland's religious families,
and had associated his name (i.e. Fisher--RB) with the Erskines especially as a
household word" (Ibid.). We have also
added back in the original sections of this book that were taken out by the
backsliding (American) Presbyterians that published this later edition. And what they left out is very telling about their
defection from Reformation attainments. Among other things they deleted
sections dealing with worship (iconoclasm), national covenanting, civil
government, toleration, capital punishment (proved from Old Testament case
law), baptism, etc. We have placed all these
previously excluded questions and answers in a separate section at the front of
the book so that it will be easy for you to see what these unfaithful editors
did not want you to see. Thus, you still get the benefit of the superior
typesetting of this later edition, with the full text as the original (more
Reformed) authors intended it. 485 pages, indexed.

Resource 11. Merle
D'Aubigne, J. H.
History of the Reformation in
Europe in the Time of Calvin (8 volumes, 1880 edition)
This engaging set, comprising eight volumes, is
the sequel to J.H. Merle D'Aubigne's History of the Reformation of the
Sixteenth Century
(in 5 Volumes, 1846, [$US34.91, cerlox bound photocopy; $US89.00, Hardcover
photocopy OUT OF PRINT]). In his typical
easy-to-read, captivating style, the author resumes where he had left off in
his other five volumes (which focused more on Luther and the period of Reform
up to 1531), entering, in this set, upon the more developed Reformation thought
of Calvin, Knox, et al.
The preface (in volume one) of this important
work states it this way,
At the conclusion of the preface to the first
volume of the History of the Reformation, the author wrote, 'This work will
consist of four volumes, or at the most five, which will appear successively.'
These five volumes have appeared. In them are described the heroic times of
Luther, and the effects
produced in Germany and other countries by the
characteristic doctrine of that reformer -- justification by faith. They present a picture
of that great epoch which contained in the germ the revival of Christianity in
the last three centuries. The author has thus completed the task he had
assigned himself; but there still remained another.
The times of Luther were followed by those of
Calvin. He, like his great predecessor, undertook to search the Scriptures, and
in them he found the same truth and the same life; but a different character
distinguishes his work.
The renovation of the individual,
of the Church, and of the human race, is his theme. If the Holy Ghost
kindles the lamp of truth in man, it is (according to Calvin) 'to the end that
the entire man should be transformed.' -- 'In the kingdom of Christ,' he says,
'it is only the new man that flourishes and has any vigor, and whom we ought to
take into account.' This renovation is, at the
same time, an enfranchisement; and we might assign, as a motto to the
reformation accomplished by Calvin, as well as to apostolical Christianity
itself, these words of Jesus Christ: The truth shall make you free. (John 8:32)...
The reformation of the sixteenth
century restored to the human race what the middle ages had stolen from them; it delivered them from
the traditions, laws, and despotism of the papacy; it put an end to the
minority and tutelage in which Rome claimed to keep mankind for ever; and by
calling upon man to establish his faith not on the word of a priest, but on the
infallible Word of God, and by announcing to every one free access to the
Father through the new and saving way -- Christ Jesus, it
proclaimed and brought about the hour of Christian manhood...
Luther transformed princes into heroes of the
faith, and we have described with admiration their triumphs at Augsburg and
elsewhere. The reformation of Calvin was addressed
particularly to the people, among whom it raised up martyrs until the time came
when it was to send forth the spiritual conquerors of the world. For three centuries it
has been producing, in the social condition of the nations that have received
it, transformations unknown to former times. And still at this very day, and
now perhaps more than ever, it imparts to the men
who accept it a spirit of power which makes them chosen instruments, fitted to
propagate truth, morality, and civilisation to the ends of the earth.
In this extensive
chronicle of international Reformation the author has made use
of the archives in Geneva, Calvin's Latin letters, numerous French documents of
the sixteenth century and many other sources not
readily available (especially to English readers). This has
greatly increased the value of this work, as a great deal of this information
is not available elsewhere in English. Moreover, the broad historical and
geographical range (from the Hugenots to the Netherlands to Norway and on)
covered herein, coupled with the author's extensive research (in various
languages) makes this an unique treasure for those seeking to "walk in the
footsteps of the flock" (Song of Solomon 1:8). In
fact, there are few other large Reformation histories, written by Calvinists,
that rival this set.

Paisley calls the

fosters superstition, is at war with patriotism and destroys morality, will, if

PURITAN REFORMED SESSION
A Brief Defence of
Dissociation in the Present Circumstances (1996)
This
work explains why Christians should separate themselves from those churches
which deny biblical truth and its implications. It defends this
position using many Reformation source documents. Samuel Rutherford has
been especially misunderstood concerning separation. Examples
of misleading and seriously flawed presentations of Rutherford's position on
the church and separation have been seen in Walker's The Theology and
Theologians of Scotland 1560-1750,
Bacon's The Visible Church and Outer Darkness and a host of other works -- all of which overlook foundational
second Reformation truths set forth by Rutherford and his fellow Covenanters.
This book clearly demonstrates, from Rutherford's own actions and teaching
(during the Protester/Resolutioner controversy in the Scottish church), how far
off many previous works on this subject have been.
One example,
given by the Puritan Reformed elders (below), exhibits
Rutherford's (and the other Protesters) stand regarding covenanting, close
communion and separation,
In
fact, the issue of faithfulness to the covenants actually rent the Church of
Scotland into two parties so that the Protesters declared the Assemblies of the
Resolutioners (the covenant-breaking party that developed out of the Engagers)
to be unconstitutional and pretended Assemblies. The
covenants were obvious terms of communion, for Protesters and Resolutioners
refused to meet in the same General Assemblies together. Protesters
did not recognize the unlawful courts of the Resolutioner Assemblies and would
not attend them when cited to appear. Protesters were deposed from the ministry
by Resolutioner Assemblies when they refused to recognize their lawful
authority to rule on behalf of Christ.
It
[the joint General Assembly of Protesters and Resolutioners--PRC] met in St.
Andrews on 16th July. . . . Rutherford, and other
twenty-one sympathisers, protested against the meeting as unconstitutional.
. . . There [later at Dundee, where the General Assembly of Protesters, who had
separated themselves from the Resolutioners, was now meeting--PRC], on 22nd
July [1651--PRC], Rutherford's cogent Protest declining the Assembly was read. Balcarres [a
Resolutioner-- PRC] in vain demanded that the twenty-two absent Protesters
should be reported for civil punishment for their reflections on the King,
Parliament, and Church. The Assembly [of Resolutioners--PRC] ordered
Presbyteries to deal with them. It was ultimately agreed to cite [James--PRC]
Guthrie, Patrick Gillespie, James Simson, James Naismith, and John Menzies. They did not compear
[i.e. appear at the Resolutioner assembly--PRC]. The [Resolutioner--PRC]
Assembly deposed Guthrie, Gillespie, and Simson, suspended Naismith, and
referred Menzies to the Commission. After the meeting of the Assembly at St.
Andrews, a work was published entitled A Vindication of the Freedom and
Lawfulness of the late Assembly [by James Wood, a Resolutioner--PRC], etc. This was answered by The Nullity of the Pretended
Assembly at Saint Andrews and Dundee
[signed by 40 Protesters including Rutherford and Guthrie--PRC](Hewison,
The Covenanters,
Vol. II, pp. 34,35, emphases added).
Separate Assemblies of Protesters and Resolutioners met in 1652
and in 1653 in Edinburgh. The Protesters declared the Assembly of the
Resolutioners in 1652 to be "unlawful, unfrie, and unjust" (Hewison, The
Covenanters,
Vol. II, p. 43). It is worthy to be noted that the issue between the Protesters
and the Resolutioners did not deal at all with the propriety of ministers and
members of the Church of Scotland swearing the covenants, but over the issue of
faithfulness to the covenants. Both sides upheld the obligation of ministers
and members to own the covenants. Furthermore, unfaithfulness
to this term of communion (i.e. faithfully maintaining the covenants) on the
part of the Resolutioners led the Protesters to separate from their brethren to
avoid schism and in order to maintain a truly constituted church. They would
not serve with the Resolutioners while they maintained different terms of
communion, neither would they serve them the Lord's Supper (e.g. Rutherford
refused to serve communion with Blair at St. Andrews; and on another occasion
Rutherford and Moncrieff debarred Resolutioners from the table at Scoonie).
Such actions can only be defended if the covenants were terms of communion.
Were the covenants biblical terms of communion? We testify that they were and
still are biblical terms of communion. To affirm otherwise is in effect to
charge the faithful covenanters (Protesters) of the Second Reformation with sin
and to undermine their covenanted reformation and the biblical presbyterianism
they taught and practiced.
The following
excerpt gives a short synopsis of those truths which this book seeks to
vindicate. The elders of The Puritan Reformed Church write,
"Though
it is not necessary that a truly constituted church be absolutely pure as to
the doctrine taught or embraced, as to the ordinances administered, or the
public worship performed, it is, however, necessary that its constitution be
founded upon and agreeable to the Word of God and that its constitution reflect
the light attained to by the purest of Reformed Churches (for all reformation
must be biblical reformation if it is reformation at all, otherwise it is not a
reformation but a deformation, cf. Phil. 3:16). Wherefore,
to adopt a constitution that corrupts the light of Scripture or the light of
reformation is to adopt a false constitution. A false constitution renders a
church and its courts unconstitutional. When the Confession of Faith
(25:4) speaks of degrees of purity among particular churches within the
"catholick church", we believe it designates degrees of purity within
truly constituted churches. For example, though the church of Corinth was
plagued with division, immorality, and false doctrine promoted by some within the
church (and therefore manifested a lesser degree of purity than other truly
constituted churches, cf. the church of Smyrna in Rev. 2:8-11), it was,
nevertheless, a truly constituted church for it was constituted by apostolic
authority (with apostolic doctrine, apostolic worship, apostolic government,
and apostolic discipline). Thus, for a church to
constitutionally adhere to Arminianism, Dispensationalism, or Charismatic
experientialism (false doctrine), singing uninspired hymns or using
instrumental music in public praise (false worship), Episcopacy or Independency
(false government), or unrestricted communion (false discipline) is to qualify
as a constitutionally false church. That is not to say that there
are no believers in churches that are not truly constituted (there may be many
in some cases). Nor is it to imply that ministers or elders within those
churches do not courageously stand for many truths taught in Scripture. It is simply to say that authority to rule in the church must
come from Christ, and if a church does not have a constitution of which He
approves (as King of His church), then there is no lawful authority to rule or
to administer the ordinances on His behalf."
This
book is the best short introduction to questions regarding the visible church
and separation which we list.

BANNERMAN, JAMES
Church of Christ: A Treatise
on the Nature, Powers, Ordinances, Discipline, and Government of the Christian
Church (1869)
Two large volumes. A classic on the Church
and worship!
This is one of the most extensive studies of its kind ever compiled. Nothing
compares to it on this subject. Regarding these gems, Iain
Murray has stated, "In our day, however greatly
we need an evangelical revival, we need more than that. We need another
Reformation, a movement which will go 'to the root of the mischief' and bring
back the visible church to the pattern of God's Word in her government,
ordinances and ministry. The republication of Bannerman is a step in that
direction... For those who wish to study the doctrine of the Church in its
several aspects as it was held by the majority of the Reformers, Puritans,
Covenanters and leaders of 'The Third Reformation,' it will prove an invaluable
textbook." Volume one deals
with the nature and power of the church, containing a lengthy explanation of
the Church in its relation to the state (which is one of the best treatments of
this topic to be found anywhere!). From there, it deals with matters in regard
to which church power is exercised (i.e. in regard to doctrine, ordinances, the
instrumentality and time of public worship -- with a discussion of holy days,
Independency, and confessions). Volume two
continues where volume one left off, providing a lengthy section on the
sacraments, covering the parties in whom the right to exercise church power is
vested, examining crucial points concerning Christian liberty, comparing the
Popish, Prelatic, Independent, Congregational and Presbyterian systems, etc. Nine appendices
deal with a wide range of practical topics including union between churches,
church/state relations, ordination, and valuable notes on the literature
related to this subject. If you are interested in Church issues, you won't find a
better set.

'Hexapla' was originally applied to the work executed by Origen in the 3rd
century; in which the first column contained the Hebrew Text of the Old
Testament; the second, the Hebrew text in Greek letters; the third, Aquila's
Greek version; the fourth, the translation of Symmachus; the fifth, the LXX
version (i.e. the Septuagint--RB); the sixth, Theodotion's version." The English Hexapla offered here contains the six English
translations noted in the title, arranged side by side for easy comparison and
reference. Dates for each version used
are as follows: Wiclif (1380), Tyndal (1534), Cranmer (1539), Geneva (1557),
Rheims (1582), King James Version (1611). Of special interest may be
the Geneva 1557 version (from a copy of the first edition), as both Geneva
Bible's presently in print contain later versions (1599 and 1602) of this text.
It should also be noted that the notes to the Geneva Bible are not included in
the English Hexapla, just the text. The 1611 edition of the KJV will also be of
value to those who would like to compare it with the more modern version of
this translation. "The notation of the verses has been inserted in all the
translations, for convenience of reference... In illustration of the utility of
the comparison of the various translations, much that is interesting might be
advanced, but which the use of the volume will at once afford. The varied,
although ordinarily equivalent manner in which the different translators render
the same phrase, often throws much light upon the exact meaning; and when the
versions vary in sense, the enquiry suggested with reference to the Original
cannot fail to afford profit while it interests" ("Plan of the
English Hexapla," pp. 161-162). Additionally this English Hexapla also
includes "The original Greek text after Scholz with the various
readings of the Textus Receptus and the principal Constantinopolitan and
Alexanderine manuscripts, and a complete collation of Scholz's text with
Griesbach's edition of 1805... The Greek text has been placed in the upper
part of each page, for the purpose of facilitating the comparison of the
versions with the Original, so desirable when they vary in rendering any
passage." This is all preceeded by a
detailed and annotated 160 page historical account of the English translations.

WILLIAM
Hebrews Commentary (1655,
1866 edition, 3 volumes)
Originally titled: "A Learned and Very Useful Commentary on the Whole Epistle to the Hebrews;
Wherein Every Word and Particle in the Original is Explained, and the Emphasis
Thereof Fully Shewed; the Sense and Meaning of Every Verse Logically and
Exactly Analyzed; Genuine Doctrines Naturally Raised; The Manifold Types of
Christ Unveiled, etc. Being the Substance of Thirty Years' Wednesday's Lectures
at Blackfriars, London." Darling calls this "a labourious and
valuable work, of very rare occurrence" (Cyclopaedia Bibliographica, p. 1295). "We greatly prize Gouge," writes Spurgeon of this
commentary, "upon any topic which he touches he gives outlines which may
supply sermons for months" (Commenting on Commentaries). Gouge was a leader among the Covenanted English Presbyterians,
a respected member of the Westminster Assembly and one of its most active
members. Some of his enemies vilified him as an "Arch Puritan."

Resource 17. BROWN
(of Wamphray), JOHN
An Exposition of the Epistle
of Paul to the Romans, With Large Practical Observations; Delivered in Several
Lectures
(1766 edition)
This commentary has been called, "perhaps the best exposition of the Epistle yet to be found" (J.W.C., cited in the
Johnston's Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 341). Charles Spurgeon comments, "By a Calvinist of the old
school. Heavy, perhaps, but precious." At the very least it should
be considered a classic Covenanter's commentary. John Brown of Wamphray was one of Samuel Rutherford's favorite
students. He was ejected in 1662, imprisoned and cruelly treated until
he suffered exile to the Netherlands -- all for steadfastly maintaining the
principles of the Covenanted Reformation. In fact, A.N. in the preface to this
volume notes that, among other things, "the particular grounds and causes
why he was thus inhumanly and barbarously treated, was his strict attachment
to, and maintaining the binding force and perpetual obligations of the nation's
solemn vows and covenants; his refusing acceptation of the then sinful
Indulgences; ... his public and zealous testifying against licentious
tolerations," etc. While in exile he wrote thirteen books. Johnston notes
that Brown "has been regarded the most
important theologian of the second period of Scottish Presbyterianism"
(Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 339). This commentary gives us a good
indication as to why Brown is so highly regarded among faithful Calvinists,
godly historians and numerous commentators. 614 pages.

MCNAUGHER, JOHN, ed.
The Psalms in Worship
Dr. David Freeman (who was John Murray's pastor in Philadelphia) said that the Psalms in Worship was the most comprehensive treatment of this subject to be found
anywhere. This volume (of almost 600 pages) consists of material
presented at two conventions in 1905, promoting the claims of the Psalms in
worship. Two articles covering each of 27 related topics comprise this volume,
making a total of 54 separate papers (all thoroughly indexed and including a
new appendix added by the publisher). Articles included range from
argumentative discussions of a doctrinal and critical kind (defending exclusive
Psalmody), to broader discussions along historical, literary, and practical
lines. This is a one of a kind publication and
nothing else like it is available today.

MANTON, THOMAS
The Complete Works of Thomas
Manton
(22 Volumes)
Manton was "one of the most eminent of the
Nonconformist divines." He was born in 1620 and died in 1677. He was
chosen to write "The Epistle to the Reader: Especially Heads of
Families" of the famous Westminster standards. "Received episcopal
institution in 1661. Resigned in 1662, on account of the Act of Uniformity
(which among other wicked, Satanic enactments, its principal terms required a
"declaration of 'unfeigned assent and consent' to everything contained in
the Book of Common Prayer, re-ordination for those not episcopally
ordained" and, most evil of all, "a renunciation of the Solemn League
and Covenant. Knowing that the Puritans would not submit to such terms, the
Authorities framed the Act to secure their expulsion" cf. Sermons of
the Great Ejection by Iain Murray [Banner of Truth, reprinted 1962]). He was a
man of great learning and extensive reading, of a sound judgement, and had
the art of reducing volumes of divinity into a narrow compass. According to
Charnock, he was the best collector of sense of the age. Dr. Bates says , 'A
clear judgement, rich fancy, strong memory, and happy elocution, met in him,
and were excellently improved by diligent study'" (James Darling, Cyclopaedia
Bibliographica,
1854, pp. 1953-1954). Includes Manton's better known volumes, such as his
commentary on James and Jude and his Sermons on Psalm 119, as well as a host of
other practical preaching, teaching and Scriptural exposition. The 22nd volume
contains two large indices (by subject and text). A full list of everything
included in this massive set is at: http://www.swrb.com/catalog/M.htm.

Resource 20. EIRE,
CARLOS M.N.
War Against the Idols: The
Reformation of Worship from Erasmus to Calvin
Eire shows that as the Reformation progressed
the primary focus of the Reformers became upholding God's sovereign prerogative
in worship -- what today is called the regulative principle of worship. Eire's War Against
the Idols
demonstrates the extent of the Reformers clear
condemnation of Arminianism in worship (i.e. will-worship [Col. 2:23]) in
rejecting all elements of worship that did not have Scriptural warrant.
In fact, Calvin was so intent on highlighting this point, concerning the
centrality of worship (and the application of Sola Scriptura as exhibited
in the regulative principle of worship), that he placed worship ahead of salvation in
his list of the two most important elements of Biblical Christianity.
Regarding Calvin's On the Necessity of
Reforming the Church
Eire notes,
Calvin speaks about the nature of worship and
about the seriousness of the sin of idolatry in his 1543 treatise, On the
Necessity of Reforming the Church, where he concentrates on the significance of
worship for the Christian religion. Calvin's argument, as indicated by the
title of the treatise, is that the Church had reached such a corrupt state that
its reform could wait no longer. The most significant aspect of corruption
singled out by Calvin is the perversion of worship, and it is in explaining
this issue that he set forth the basis for his attack on idolatry.
Calvin begins by studying the place
that worship holds in the Christian faith, and he concludes that it is one of
the two elements that define Christianity:
"If it be asked, then, by what things
chiefly the Christian religion has a standing amongst us, and maintains its
truth, it will be found that the following two not only occupy the principal
place, but comprehend under them all the other parts, and consequently the
whole substance of Christianity, viz., a knowledge first, of the right way
to worship God; and secondly of the source from which salvation is to be
sought. When these are kept out of view, though we may glory in the name of
Christians, our profession is empty and vain." (War Against the Idols, p. 198, citing from
Calvin's On the Necessity of Reforming the Church [FREE at: http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualnls/NRC_ch00.htm ], emphases added).
The scholarly
translational work found in Eire's book also gives insights into the worship question not found in any other
English history books (concerning Calvin, Knox, and a host of others) --
for it contains much from previously untranslated (into English, that is)
Reformation documents.
A large portion of this book centers on Calvin,
but its major thrust is to reveal the single most
burning issue confronting the Reformers: purity of worship!
Furthermore, this book's teaching regarding the Reformers (and their view of
the Scriptural law of worship) is as applicable today as it was in the days of
the first Reformation -- for it brings to light the time-tested Biblical principles which guard against the errors,
excesses, and idolatries of the Roman harlot, Eastern Orthodoxy and all
liturgical innovators on one hand and the modern "evangelicals,"
Anabaptists and Charismatics on the other. This is, without a doubt, one of the
best Reformation history books available -- stirring, scholarly, relevant and
edifying!
As far as we know this book may be out of print in
the near future, so those interested would be advised to obtain a copy as soon
as possible.

CALVIN, JOHN
Calvin's Selected Works (7
Volumes)
These remarkable volumes contain Calvin's tracts
and letters. They clearly exhibit why Calvin was one of the great saints (who defended the regulative principle of worship) and
why his work was singularly blessed of God. Understanding these works will
shed much light on our current situation; for many in the professed Christian
community live in as great (or greater) darkness today than those who were
contemporaries of Calvin. This set contains such classics as "The Necessity of
Reforming the Church," "The Catechism of the Church of Geneva,"
"An Antidote Against Trent," "The Sinfulness of Outward
Conformity to Romish Rites" and much more. Calvin's
only letter to Luther, his letters to Knox, Bullinger, Beza and a host of other
Reformers, along with Beza's 100 page Life of Calvin are also all included. Indexed, 3507 pages.

STEELE, DAVID
Notes on the Apocalypse (1870)
In 1779, in their Testimony and Warning
Against the Blasphemies and Idolatry of Popery, the Reformed Presbytery
called Durham's Complete Commentary... On the Book of Revelation [$39.98, 2 vol. rare
bound photocopy], "the best exposition of that book that has yet been
published"
(p. 61n). Had they had the privilege of reading Steele's Notes on the
Apocalypse
we are quite certain that they would have given it a similar endorsement.
Though written in a different style than Durham's work, Steele's notes on
Revelation may be even more valuable in many respects -- Steele having taken a
more decided position "in the wilderness." Steele
also had the benefit of many more resources, having written over two centuries
later. Steele's aim in writing this book is made clear in his own words
taken from the preface,
As this work is intended for the instruction and
edification of the unlearned, rather than for the entertainment of the learned,
words of foreign extract are used as seldom as possible. Practical remarks and
reflections are rarely introduced; the principal aim being simply to
ascertain and present to the reader the mind of the Holy Spirit. How far this object
has been accomplished, is of course left to the judgment of the honest
inquirer. The reader, however, in forming his judgment of the value of these
Notes, may be reminded of that inspired rule in searching the
Scriptures,--"Comparing spiritual things with spiritual." To assist
him in the application of this divine rule, many chapters and verses are quoted
from other parts of the Bible, but especially within the Apocalypse itself;
that by concentrating the various rays upon particular texts or symbols, their
intrinsic light may be rendered more luminous. Thus the interpretation given,
if correct, may be confirmed and illustrated.
Appendices include a section on, The New Jerusalem, The Antichrist, The Image of the Beast,
The Beast's "deadly wound," The Little Book, The Death of the
Witnesses, The Mark of the Beast, The First Resurrection, The Identity of the
Two Witnesses, Sounding of the Seventh Trumpet and The Title of this Book (i.e.
the Book of Revelation--RB). This work also includes various
"animadversions on the interpretations (of Revelation--RB) of several
among the most learned and approved expositors of Britain and America."
Comments on this work include the four given
below, all which were given without the solicitation or knowledge of the
author. The Evangelical Repository notes, "the author adduces a greater
number of Scriptural illustrations than any other writer on prophecy we ever
met with."
Hutcheson writes, "I can recommend it to any person as condensing the
best thoughts to be had on the subject." Brooks says, "I have derived
more knowledge of the Apocalypse from this work than from all other expositions
which I have consulted." And finally, John Cunningham comments, "It
is neither a dictionary nor concordance; neither a confession of faith, nor an
encyclopedia, but a thesaurus of Theology, embodying the characters of all
these."
Steele dedicated this work to John Cunningham, author of The Ordinance of
Covenanting
($14.99 P, $29.00 HP). 323 pages.

DIODATI, JOHN
Pious and Learned Annotations
Upon the Holy Bible Plainly Expounding the Most Difficult Places Thereof By
that Godly and Famous Divine, Mr. John Diodati, Late Minister of the Gospel in
Geneva (third edition [in two volumes], 1651)
The title continues: "Corrected and much
augmented, with additional notes of the same author, throughout the whole work.
And the analysis upon each several book of the Old and New Testament, setting
down the chief heads contained therein, being very much enlarged, is now fully
completed in this third edition." "These Annotations were first
written in Italian, by a reverend Protestant Divine
of the Church of Geneva, the most reformed in all France, and famous for the
great lights of it, John Calvin, Theodore Beza, and this renowned John Diodati,
their successor both in place and eminent erudition.... In fine, here
are choice Meditations, and sound expositions, more to be valued then refined
gold... and the choicest subject the world ever afforded, being Jesus Christ
and him crucified, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life" (Translator
from "To the Reader"). Concerning Diodati, Darling (Cyclopaedia
Bibliographica,
p. 918) writes, "Born at Geneva 1576; died 1640. This celebrated Italian
Protestant divine, belonging to a noble family from Lucca in Italy, is known
chiefly by his biblical works, and by his translation of Father Paul's
History of the Council of Trent into French. He was
sent in 1618 by the Church of Geneva to the Synod of Dort. His
translation of the Bible into Italian is still considered one of the
best." Regarding these Annotations in particular Darling further notes,
"Short, but comprehensive practical annotations; many of them were
introduced into the (Westminster--RB) Assembly's Annotations. The above (i.e.
the third edition--RB) is the best edition." Richard
Baxter, in compiling a list of the most essential books for Christian
edification, after listing the Bible and a Concordance, counseled Christians to
obtain "a sound Commentary or Annotations, either Diodati's, the English
(or Westminster--RB) Annotations, or the Dutch (A Christian Directory, p. 732). 1104 pages.

DARLING, JAMES
Cyclopaedia Bibliographica: A
Library Manual of Theological and General Literature, and Guide to Books for
Authors, Preachers, Students and Literary Men. Analytical, Bibliographical, and
Biographical (1854)
An indispensable set for authors,
researchers, serious students of Scripture, librarians, ministers, collectors,
rare book dealers, etc. Contains
much information that is either unavailable elsewhere or would have to be
gleaned from several scattered volumes. Its ten volumes total 5245 pages. A phenomenal,
theological, bibliographical resource of staggering comprehensiveness. The
first section of this extremely rare set is a huge bibliography, organized by
authors alphabetically. Most known Biblical and theological publications, to
the author's day, are listed. Includes not only English listings, but Latin,
French and German also. The second part is a topical bibliography categorizing
items under the headings of Universal Knowledge, Theology (including the major
commentaries, sermons, articles and studies for just about every verse in the
Bible), a listing of Scripture texts (Hebrew, Greek and Latin) and an extensive
index. The Morning Post calls this massive work "the
most copious, accurate, and well-arranged catalogue of works in theological and
general literature which has as yet been published." Brownson's
Review noted that "for practical utility we know of none that surpasses
or approaches it."
Finally Bell's Messenger states, "No clergyman
or antiquarian should think it needless to possess a copy of this work. It will
smooth many a day's hard toil, by diminishing the labour of research, pointing
as it does, in an instant to works which it might have taken weeks, if not
months, or years, to search after." Don't miss this darling of
a help, which will ease and aid all your theological studies!

Resource 25. SHEDD,
WILLIAM G.T.
Dogmatic Theology (3 volumes, 1888)
Three large volumes, totalling 1879 pages, for the advanced study of Calvinism.
Closing up the labors of forty years of theological research and meditation,
Shedd steps forth as a major proponent of the Augustinio-Calvinistic system of
thought. Drawing heavily from citations in works of the Ancient, Mediaeval and
Reformation periods, and from the English and Continental divines of the 16th
and 17th century, Shedd's work is unsurpassed in many respects. He thoroughly and
comprehensively deals with all the major areas of theology, including the
doctrine of God, Anthropology, Christology, and Eschatology. Also contains a very
useful theological introduction and bibliography.
