"I have been systematically working through
reading the... Reformed CDs I purchased. I must say, there is nothing like them
available anywhere. It is the most amazing collection of works I know of in one
package to date...
The Puritan and Reformed material presented on these CDs is exceptional. I am
continually amazed at the depth and breadth of information in both collections,
and the rarity of works that I now have at my fingertips. You have done an
immeasurable service for the Kingdom of Christ in making these CDs available,
and every pastor and theologian should own them without question (they would be
foolhardy to pass them by) ... more"

Dr. C.
Matthew McMahon, A Puritan's Mind Ministries
______________
"This collection of 62 CDs is a truly
astounding accomplishment. There is nothing like this available to the ordinary
Christian on the whole face of the earth. Now, for the first time ever, ordinary
Christians can have direct and near effortless access to the very cream
of Puritan and Reformed, as well as Covenanter, literature... What they used
to say of the Puritan John Flavel's preaching, can be said of these CDs: they
are 'hissing hot'! ... more" (emphases added).
- Dr Jonathan D. Moore, Cambridge, UK.
(Scholar of
16th and 17th century Calvinistic literature.)

"Your... CD's of Reformation and Puritan
authors are a great boon to studies in the Reformed-Puritan experiential
tradition. Receive our hearty thanks for your invaluable work in making so many
rare gems accessible to thousands."

1. BROWN, JOHN (of Haddington)
The
Self-Interpreting Bible: With Commentaries, References, Harmony of the Gospels
and Many Other Helps Needed to Understand and Teach the Text (4
volumes, 1914 edition)
Brown's renown rests chiefly on The Self-Interpreting Bible... and to a lesser
extent on A Dictionary of the Holy Bible
($29.95 P; $39.00 HP). 'Brown's Bible' was repeatedly reprinted (in America as well as
Britain, as were all his more popular works), with improvements by later
editors, even into the twentieth century (and now into the 21st century!--RB).
Its numerous aids... included a system of marginal cross-references novel in
its extensiveness. This 'library in one volume'
became as common as Bunyan's Pilgrim's
Progress ($14.98 P; $29.00 HP;
$47.96 H) and Thomas Boston's Fourfold
State ($9.99 P; $18.00 HP; $39.00
H). It incorporated material from the Dictionary,
which unlike modern counterparts, explained basic English vocabulary and
grammar (making it useful for homeschooling--RB), and often went beyond making
the Bible intelligible (to interpreting it, for example the entry on--RB)...
'Antichrist' surveys papal history... (the complete work--RB) is exemplary in
its directness and accuracy (DSCHT, p. 99).
In Mackenzie's
book, John Brown of Haddington, a whole chapter is
devoted to just the Self-Interpreting Bible.
Here is a glimpse at what Mackenzie has to say,
No
work carried the reputation of the author so far afield as his Self-Interpreting Bible... Its
success from the first was extraordinary... It will
be evident that an extraordinary amount of valuable material was thus placed at
the command of the ordinary reader. It was the information that a
student of the Scriptures hungered for, who had not access to the learned works
dealing with such subjects... Brown states that his avowed aim in his
publication is not to depreciate the valuable commentaries of these writers
(referring to some of the most famous Reformed commentators of the past--RB),
but 'to exhibit their principal substance with all possible advantage... and in
referring particularly to the New Testament, he adds that 'there the
explication is peculiarly extensive, and attempts to exhibit the substance of
many learned and expensive commentaries.' ...The last edition of Brown's Bible
is undoubtedly the best (which is the same as the edition we have used--RB)
(pp. 177, 178, 185, 186).
The
issue of this Bible Commentary brought Brown into correspondence with many
notable persons, among them the saintly Charles Simeon of Cambridge... It was
Simeon's habit... to rise every morning at 4AM... after lighting a fire, he
devoted the first four hours of the day to private prayer and the devotional
study of the Scriptures. The favorite companion of these devotional hours was
Brown's Self-Interpreting Bible...
Simeon prized the Self-Interpreting Bible above
all others, and made acknowledgment of the spiritual enlightenment and
quickening which he received from its daily perusal... (writing) "Your Self-Interpreting Bible seems to
stand in lieu of all other commentaries; and I am daily receiving so much
edification and instruction from it, that I would
wish it in the hands of all serious ministers" (pp. 187-188).
Brown's
Bible was treasured in the homes of the people with all the reverence and care
enjoyed by Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress
and Boston's Fourfold State. It supplied what was lacking in these great soul classics,
providing a clear path to the fount from which they derived their vitality and
strength. The three were considered the necessary literary and
religious equipment of the household. They furnished pabulum for serious
reading; and they produced strong men (p. 190).
Over 2200
(8.5" X 11") pages in the complete set -- this Bible contains more features
and additions (from sections on prophecy fulfillment and hermeneutics to a
chronological index to Scripture history, Jewish festivals and the
significations of obsolete words [and much more!]-- with 448 photographs
showing places of Bible events) than we have space to note here!

2. WALL, WILLIAM
The
History of Infant Baptism
([1705,
1711, 1720] 1889, 4 volumes)
Very rare and
considered the CLASSIC set in this field of study (due to the detailed and exhaustive
research of Mr. Wall), we have published all four volumes -- including the last
two which turned Wall's research into a stirring debate.
Volume
1. An
Impartial Collection of All Such Passages in the Writers of the Four First
Centuries as do Make For or Against Infant Baptism
Volume
2.
Several Things that do Help to Illustrate the Said History
Volume
3.
Reflections (Reproaches--RB) on (Against--RB) Mr. Wall's History of Infant
Baptism
(by John Gale)
Volume
4. A
Defence of the History of Infant Baptism Against the Reflections of Mr. Gale and
Others with An Appendix Containing the Additions and Alterations in the Third
Edition... That Are Most Material.
For the first
two volumes we have used the 1889 (two volume) edition because they are far
easier to read (as they contain modern style fonts); volume three is the 1711
edition and volume four the 1720 edition. This set provides English translation
for a large amount of intriguing material on baptism from the early church that
is otherwise unavailable to English-only readers. 1647 pages.

3. BRUCE, ROBERT
The
Mystery of the Lord's Supper (1614)
In five
sermons: two of preparation and three of the sacrament itself.
It
was largely under Bruce's leadership that the Scottish reformation found
stability. His sermons on the Lord's Supper brought
together Reformed doctrine and evangelical application in a way that
helped to shape and became characteristic of the Scottish tradition (DSCHT, p. 104).
These searching
and informative sermons are still much loved and sought after in our day. 150
pages.

5. BENNETT, RICHARD
The
Antichrist Unveiled (2000)
Richard
Bennett was a Roman Catholic priest for 23 years before he turned to Christ
(and left Rome) in 1985. He has been growing in the faith since and he has recently
adopted the classic Reformation postion that the Papacy is the Antichrist or
"Man of Sin" (cf. WCF 25:6). In providing us with his defense of this
position for publication he wrote,
The article
attached is quite up to date as it deals with the consecration of the world to
Mary (October 8th, 2000), and the September 5th (2000) document (Dominus
Iesus)
of Rome. It is one of the most difficult items that I have written. I am
utterly convinced of its truth and I pray that brothers and sisters will see
what those in Christian history before so clearly saw. If any article could
bring persecution and hatred it is this one.
Mr. Bennett
also writes,
The
historic (and biblical--RB) interpretation has been embodied in the most solemn
confessions of the Biblical world. It forms a leading part in the testimony of
martyrs and reformers. Like the prophets of old, these holy men bore a twofold
testimony, a testimony for the truth of God, and a testimony against the
Apostasy of those professing to be Christian. Their testimony was that Papal
Rome is the Babylon of prophecy, "that great city, which reigneth over
the kings of the earth," and that its head, the Roman pontiff, is the
predicted "Man of Sin," or Antichrist.
"This
paper deals particularly with II Thessalonians 2:3-12, one of the many texts
that unveils the Antichrist and serves as an introduction to the other
texts," writes Bennett. It also covers the historical origins of
Antichrist, the cloud of witnesses from church history, who and what held back
the Man of Sin, the place where the Man of Sin appears, the purposes and intent
of the Man of Sin, and the final end of the Man of Sin.

5a. FOXE, JOHN (the full 8 volume set!)
Acts
& Monuments or Foxe's Book of Martyrs
(c.
1554, 8 volumes, 1843-49 edition; 1648 3 vol. ed. also available)
"No
book ever inflicted a wound so deep and incurable on the Romish system of
superstition and bloody persecution... (it) was placed in... all churches and chapels
throughout the kingdom, by order of Queen Elizabeth." (Smith, Select
Memoirs
[$US19.99 P; $US29.00 HP], p. 245). The complete
eight volume edition contains much information not found in any of the
liberally edited and severely shortened versions of this classic work which are
in print today -- in fact, most of the modern editions have left out over 6000
pages. Covering martyrs from the early church through to Foxe's day,
it was one of the most influential books of the sixteenth century!
The
testimony of the martyrs was extraordinary. Their impact was greatly increased
through the industrious writing of John Foxe... Never
before had such a work on such a scale appeared in English, certainly never at
such a moment... Along with the Bible, Foxe's
Book of Martyrs became a family book
in many homes. Foxe's Acts and
Monuments (the formal title of his
extensive chronicle on the martyrs) was the principal practical means of
turning England to Protestantism (Who are the Puritans?, pp. 35-36).
Broadening the
scope of this testimony, the British Academy also notes,
The Acts and Monuments of the English Martyrs was
second only to the English Bible as a formative influence on the language and
culture of this country.
Most
importantly, though, this book overflows with faith building
testimony of the power of God to overcome the most cruel and
barbarous acts of human depravity and demonic cruelty. 6890 pages. A very rare set, now back in print after 150 years!

7. LEE, F. NIGEL
Always
Victorious! The Earliest Church Not Pre- But Postmillennial (2000)
A fascinating
24 page look at early church history and eschatology (with English tranlations
of Latin works) which backs up the following strong statements by Dr. Lee,
The
plain truth is: Chiliasm (Premillennialism--RB) is
neither Old-Testamentical, Ancient-Apocryphal, Pseudepigraphical,
New-Testamentical, Neo-Apocryphal, or Early-Patristic. Instead, it is a
Mid-Patristic minority viewpoint -- derived from Zoroastrian Paganism.
Where, then, did the unscriptural chiliastic teaching of the "double
resurrection" come from? Whence arose this teaching of a physical
resurrection of the saints separated by a thousand years from a subsequent physical
resurrection of the wicked? Not from the Bible -- but from Babel!
It
was only from the middle of the second century A.D. onward, then, that the
Babylonian-Persian chiliastic idea of two widely-separated physical
resurrections began to expand even on the fringes of the Christian Church. First it influenced Sub-Christian
groups like the Cerinthians, Ebionites, and the Montanists -- cf. too the modern Mormons,
Pentecostalists, Seventh-day Adventists, and Jehovah's Witnesses. And then it
ultimately influenced even some of the authentically-Christian groups themselves.
We
summarize. None of
the books of the Bible nor any extant writings of the Earliest Church
Fathers -- such as the Didachee or Teaching of the Twelve Apostles (A.D. 97), the Epistle
of Barnabas (98),
Clement of Rome (98), Hermas (100), Ignatius (107), Quadratus (120), the Epistle
to Diognetus (130),
Pseudo-Clement (135), Polycarp (140), or Papias (145) -- are chiliastic. With
the exception of the Mid-Patristic Justin (150), Irenaeus (185), Tertullian (200)
and those who followed them -- none of the later Patristic Fathers were
Chiliasts.

A
Practical Discourse Concerning Vows: With Special Reference to Baptism and the
Lord's Supper (1697)
Everything you
always wanted to know about vows (an important part of sanctification which is
little heard of in our day). This book includes much general practical
application (regarding vows), with abundant particular attention to vows as
they relate to baptism and the Lord's supper. As it should be with all
Christians, Calamy writes, "Whoever is
conversant in David's Psalms, will find him frequently making vows, and careful
in paying them."
Calamy
was a prominent Westminster Divine, and Thomas Smith notes that "he was an
active and zealous man in all their proceedings, and much distinguished, both
for his learning and moderation, in assembly"(Select Memoirs... of English
and Scottish Divines,
p. 474). Smith further states, "Mr. Calamy was one of the most popular
preachers in London, and frequently appointed to preach before the long
parliament; for which the prelatical party have treated him with unmerited
abuse" (idem.)
He opposed Cromwell (as many faithful Puritans did) to his face, was ejected in
1662, and spent time in prison (due to popish/prelatical persecution) for his
faithfulness to Christ. 318 pages.

Antapologia;
or, a Full Answer to the Apologetical Narration of Mr. Goodwin, Mr. Nye, Mr.
Simpson, Mr. Burroughs, Mr. Bridge, members of the Assembly of Divines; Wherein
are Handled Many of the Controversies of These Times (1644)
Extremely
scarce, this is one of the most important works
answering the Independents at the Westminster Assembly.
Hetherington, in his famous History of the Westminster Assembly, calls this work "the
most elaborate" answer to the Independents' Apologetical Narration, "embracing
every disputed or suggested topic" (p. 190). He continues, "It will
scarcely be denied, by those who have carefully perused the Antapologia, that it furnishes a
very ample and strong... refutation of the main positions taken up by the
authors of the Apologetical Narration. No formal reply was returned by the
Independents to the Antapologia" (p. 190). 307 pages.

10a. HETHERINGTON, WILLIAM
History
of the Westminster Assembly of Divines (1856)
This
book may be the best easy-reading historical account published concerning this
unsurpassed Assembly. Hetherington
covers the period from 1531 to 1662. Many consider this era a historical
high water mark for doctrinal and practical Puritan precision. Also included is a
chapter on the theological productions of the Westminster Assembly and six
valuable appendices (one containing six biographical notices of the Scottish
Commissioners including Rutherford, Gillespie, Henderson and Baillie).
This work is
indispensable for understanding the work accomplished by the Westminster
Assembly, Presbyterian and Independent history, the great debate over church
government, Oliver Cromwell and much more. Anyone interested in the work of the
Westminster Assembly -- and the men, teaching and events which were at the heart of the Puritan revolution against the forces of
antichrist -- should read (or listen to) this book at least once.

12. ELLIOTT, E.B.
Preterism
Refuted ([1862] 2000, 3 cassettes)
Contains all of
the sections from Elliott's classic Horae Apocalypticae; or, A Commentary
on the Apocalypse
which directly refute preterism ("Critical Examination and Refutation of
the Chief Counter-Schemes of Apocalyptic Interpretation," Vol. 4, Appendix
part 2, pp. 564-599) -- as well as a defense of the late date for the book of
Revelation (Vol. 1, Essay 2, pp. 32-48; Vol. 1, Appendix, pp. 533-548) and a
defense of the Scriptural "year-day" principle of prophetic
Protestant interpretation (Vol. 3, pp. 260ff.). Furthermore, these tapes show
why it is Scripturally impossible for Nero to be the antichrist, while also
taking a few passing shots a futurism (though most of what Elliott wrote
against futurism can only be found in the complete printed set of Horae
Apocalypticae at http://www.swrb.com/catalog/E.htm ).
Also included
are:
1.
Fairbairn's "Is Popery the Antichrist: The Tendency to Describe Things
According to the Reality, Rather Than the Appearance or Profession (from
Appendix "L" in The Interpretation
of Prophecy, $39.95, hardcover).
2.
The Reformed Presbytery's "Apocalyptic Interpretation: The Six Major
Views" (from the Original Covenanter magazine at http://www.swrb.com/catalog/S.htm ).
3. A fantastic
overview of Revelation from chapter two of M'Leods Lectures Upon the
Principal Prophecies of the Revelation ($9.99 P; $19.00 HP)
4.
A brief extract from Steele's Notes on the Apocalypse ($9.99 P; $14.00 HP;
$14.95 on 8 cassettes) concerning prerequisites to correctly understanding the
book of Revelation.
5.
The reader's (i.e. Larry Birger's) introduction and narration.
These tapes are
a good answer to Ken Gentry's recent articles on the heads of the beast and
antichrist and Gary Demar's elementary attempt at dismissing the historic
Protestant view that the papacy is the antichrist/man of sin. Reg Barrow also
notes,
If I'd had access to this information before I became a
Preterist as a young Christian I doubt that I would have ever embraced this
erroneous, Jesuit-inspired, reformation-denying heresy -- I can only thank God
that He has now led me to the eschatology of the Scriptures and of our Reformed
forefathers (what is commonly called historicism). These tapes will (D.V.) be
devastating to the Romish views of eschatology that have become commonplace
among Protestants who have backslidden from the biblical attainments and
revival of Apostolic Christianity that took place during the Reformation.

Horae

Also An Examination of the Chief Prophecies of Daniel (1862, 4
volumes)
"The
most important and valuable commentary of the Apocalypse which has ever been
written" (H. Gratton Guinness). Spurgeon
calls this "the standard work" on Revelation.
"His
Horae Apocalypticae (Hours with the Apocalypse) [literally 'time
with the Apocalypse'] is doubtless the most elaborate work ever
produced on the Apocalypse... Begun in 1837, its
2500 pages of often involved and overloaded text are buttressed by some 10,000
invaluable references to ancient and modern works bearing on the topics under
discussion.... Perhaps its most unique feature is the concluding
sketch of the rise and spread of the Jesuit counter systems of interpretation
that had made such inroads upon Protestantism. Holding
unswervingly to the Historical School of interpretation, Elliott gives the most
complete exposure of these counter interpretations to be found." (The Prophetic
Faith of Our Fathers,

A
Defense of the Judgement of the Reformed Churches That a Man May Lawfully Not
Only Put Away His Wife for Her Adultery, But Also Marry Another (1610)
This title defends the classic Reformed position and will
be very useful in refuting the errors (on this point) of everyone from Rome and
the Jesuits to the Protestant Reformed church of our day. Compares the Reformed
position with that of Rome, examines the Scriptures, the church fathers, and
answers Romish objections. Also, refutes (in 70 pages) the Jesuit Bellarmine
(and others), demonstrating how Bellarmine, "depraveth Scriptures,
misalleges Fathers, and abuses reason to the perverting of the truth of God,
and poisoning of his church with error." The historic Reformed position
defended in this book was later summarized in the Westminster Confession of Faith, (chapter 24).

18. CALDERWOOD, DAVID
The
Altar of Damascus or the Pattern of the English Hierarchy, and Church Policy
Obtruded Upon the Church of Scotland (1621)
Considered by
many to be one of the major classics of Reformation thought regarding worship
and church government.
The
"Altare," or Altar of Damascus (a title founded on 2 Kings 16:
10-11), is Calderwood's masterpiece, and
contains an elaborate examination of the constitution and ceremonies of the
Church of England (and thus Prelacy and the English Popish ceremonies which the
most faithful Reformers have always condemned--RB). The original of the Latin
work was a tract in English, published in 1621. It is said that King James, on
reading this looked melancholy, and being asked the cause pointed to the
formidable treatise. "Let not that trouble your majesty," said the
courtier, "I shall soon answer it." "Answer what man""
replied the King, "there is nothing there but Scripture, reason, and the
fathers" (Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 284).
The "Altare Damascenum" is
beyond comparison the most learned and elaborate work ever written on the subject,
embracing the whole controversy between the English and Scottish divines as to
government, discipline, and worship ( T. M'Mcrie as cited in Treasury of the
Scottish Covenant,
p. 284).
This volume is
the English "tract" (of 222 pages) referenced above.

The subtitle
reads: "Sometime Jesuit, but now penitent Sinner, and an unworthy Member
of the true reformed Church of God in Scotland, at Edinburgh, in the Grayfrier
Church, the 24 of August, 1638." A very interesting testimony against
Romanism and for the Reformation from a former Papist turned Covenanter. 48

21. BENNETT, RICHARD
Dominus
Iesus: Rome Exalts Her Throne, A Verbal Reappearance of the Inquisition & A
Kiss of Death for the Ecumenists (2000)
Former Roman
Catholic priest Richard Bennett writes,
It
has been but a short time since Charles Colson, like some modern day
Chamberlain alighting from his aircraft, held aloft "Evangelicals and
Catholics Together" and declared, "Peace in our time." It has
been a mere six years; yet the folly of their deeds, apparent to many before,
has now been made apparent to all. We can only conclude that if the
"evangelicals" who signed that notorious document do not denounce the
Vatican, then their act was not one of wishful thinking, but willful betrayal.
Rome has dropped her mask; the empty ecumenical charade has ended, and
therefore it is time for those who love God's word to sound the alarm in
earnest. Let us play the man, for our people, and for the cities of our God.
On
September 5th 2000, the RC document "DOMINUS IESUS" (DI) was issued
by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the
Faith (formerly known as the Office of the Inquisiton, then the Holy Office, it
is still housed in the same building in Rome as it had been during those
horrendous centuries of torture and death when it carried out the papal
decrees). Carrying the full authority of an official Vatican decree, it
declares the Roman Catholic Church to be the only "instrument for the
salvation of all humanity." DI has been "ratified and confirmed"
by "The Sovereign Pontiff John Paul II."
In this article
Bennett deals with Rome's worldwide (malevolent) intentions, as well as what
the new pronouncements from Rome mean to individuals both inside and outside
the clutches of Antichrist, as the following quotes illustrate in part,
As
the Roman Catholic Church's influence increasingly shapes civil law in the European
Union, Biblically based churches there are being legally classified as sects;
already there are reports of this from Europe. The Sunday Telegraph, 25th August 1991, noted,
"If European federalism triumphs, the EC [European Community] will indeed
be an empire. It will lack an emperor: but it will have the Pope...it is
difficult not to think that Wojtyla [John Paul II] realises this." In Can.
1404, the Pope claims immunity from all moral and civil authority, "The
First See is judged by no one." In DI he stipulates complete Primacy of
"grace and truth" for himself and his Church. In #882 of the new Catechism, the Pope purports to
take for himself the Lord Jesus Christ's divine position: "For the Roman
Pontiff, by reason of his office as Vicar of Christ, namely, and as pastor of
the entire Church, has full, supreme and universal power over the whole Church,
a power which he can always exercise unhindered." He is the worst enemy of
Christ who under the pretense of service to Christ, presumes to undermine His
unique offices by covertly usurping His position and power. The table is set
for a most interesting response to DI. Rome declares that there are "just
penalties" for those who will not bend the knee to her.
And,
These
things are written with deep respect and care, because the salvation of many is
involved. The Lord faced the sincere and devout Pharisees with a very strong
word. They like many present day Catholics were making Tradition equal to the
authority of the Written Word and "establishing their own
righteousness,"
they were not counting on God's grace alone. The Lord said to those Pharisees
of His own day, "if you believe not that I am He, you shall die in your
sins."
If anyone continues to hold to the Roman Catholic Church's teaching authority,
and her "salvific" righteousness he likewise will die in his sins.

Protesters
No Subverters and Presbytery No Papacy (1658)
A
vindication of the Protesting Covenanters (among whom we also find Rutherford,
Nisbet, Traill, et al.) against the Resolutioners (i.e. the backsliding,
covenant-breaking "Covenanters" -- some of whom later persecuted and
even murdered various Protesters). The Protesters were the faithful Covenanters
who suffered much (even to the shedding of their blood) to uphold the Crown

(including the being and well-being of the church) and separation from
backsliding and obstinate bodies of professing Christians (refuting the errors
of those who call for submission to unfaithful churches). 120 pages.

A collection
of Luther's prophecies (and prophecies about him by others) and teachings in which
he "foretold those sad events which should fall upon Rome and the Empire
of Germany, unless they would forsake their sins." (preface). "These
prophecies... have been carefully collected out of the book of Dr. Martin
Luther entitled Colloquia Mensalia... The book is admirable for instruction and
reproof; the prophecies are many, and some of them already accomplished."
(Idem.).
This book also includes a short sketch of Luther's life, Luther's admonition to
the Germans how they ought to make war against the Turks, how and why the
Scripture teaches that the office of the Papacy is the Antichrist, Luther's
expounding the prophecy of the prophet Daniel (ch. 11) concerning Antichrist
and much more. 47 pages.

29. POPE (Urban VIII)
The
Pope's Conclave; or, A Speech Made By His Holiness, Upon the Disastrous
Disappointment Which the Roman Cause Hath Received By the Late Proceedings, and
the Great Covenant of Scotland (1640)
Biblical
covenanting has always been a crowning ordinance of real Reformation and a
major harbinger of the downfall of the devil's dominion over the sons of men.
This book clearly demonstrates the Pope's seething hatred, from his own mouth,
for this ordinance of God. The Man of Sin here calls the National Covenant of Scotland,
an
accursed Covenant, the king of all Monsters in Religion (which is able to make
all other Monsters be unadmired, and draw all number to this only) out of whose
womb, like the Trojan horse, are like to come a Furious Crew of undaunted
Heretics to brash the wall of Rome.
Here the Papal
Antichrist focuses specifically on the great damage done to Rome by the
National Covenant of Scotland (sworn in 1638). 54 pages, though some are a
little hard to read.

31. RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
Influences
of the Life of Grace (1658)
The title
continues: "Or, A Practical Treatise Concerning the Way, Manner, and Means
of Having and Improving of Spiritual Disposition, and Quickening Influences
from Christ the Resurrection and the Life."
Samuel
Rutherford, so much on high that you wonder how he had patience to amass such
learning, and write so many books -- perhaps the completest instance of
absorbing affection for the person of a living Saviour, the liveliest example
of a life hid with Christ in God, which these latter ages have produced (Dr. J.
Hamilton as cited in Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 304).
This is the
first time (to our knowledge) that this Rutherford classic has been reprinted
since it first appeared almost three-and-a-half centuries ago -- and it is long
overdue, as it contains many amazing insights into conversion, the depths of
sanctification, and communion with Christ that you are unlikely to find in many
(any?) books on this topic that have been written since. 472 pages.

The
Cruel Watchman: A Sermon on Song 5:7-10 (1728)
Here,
Rutherford, in his own words, deals with two major topics:
1.
What befell the Church in seeking her Lord; the Watchman gave her strokes... Church-governors
are sometimes Church-persecutors: Scribes and Pharisees, and high Priests are
always against Christ and his disciples (something Covenanters in every age
know only too well--RB).
2.
What speech fell out between her and her fellow-friends; and there is a
dialogue between them.
Also contains
sections on godly zeal, the pursuit of holiness and truth, assurance, warfare
with the devil, standing with Christ through persecution, and much more! 48

33. RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
An
Exhortation at a Communion to a Scots Congregation in London (1728)
If Cant was the
apostle of the Covenant, and Warriston its pen, and Peden its prophet,
Rutherford was something more than its bard, a sensitive reed shaken with the
wind of a stormful age, and giving out soft music that touched the soul to
tears. He was the strong brain, the dura medulla, the intellectual fibre
of the Covenant... He was an out and out Covenanter, a protester of Protesters
(sometimes called Steelites today--RB), ready by pen or tongue to defend the
blue banner even unto death (Blair as cited in Johnston, Treasury of the
Scottish Covenant,
p. 304).
A topic of
great interest, by one of the greats of Church history (and a classic defender
of close communion). 16 pages.

34. OWEN, JOHN
The
Doctrine of Justification By Faith, and Evidences of the Faith of God's Elect (1862
American edition)
The discerning
reader, as he examines the apologetical endeavors of ancient and modern Roman
Catholics, will become increasingly aware that he is dealing with indefatigable
masters of sophistry. From Bellarmine in the 1500's to Scott Hahn, Gerry
Matatics, and Karl Keating and Catholic Answers in the 1990's, the Papal
purveyors spare no efforts in their excruciating distortions of the Scriptures
to fit the mold of their apostasy. Indeed, equivocation and deception are
quintessential to Roman Catholicism, and their proponents may rightly be
denominated theological and linguistic thaumaturgists. No less miraculous and
no less blasphemous than their "transformation" of the bread and wine
into the "real" body and blood of Christ, are their
transubstantiations of truth into error, grace into legalism, worship into
idolatry, the creature into God, and God into the creature. Soberly and sagely,
then, did R.L. Dabney speak when he referred to "the doctrine of Rome [as]
a masterpiece of cunning and plausible error."
Though true of
Romanism in its totality (to a greater or lesser degree), these words of Dabney
had reference to the Romish view of justification. It is in this vital arena
especially where their skill in sophistry is at times almost breath-taking --
at once marvelous, unbelievable in audacity and cruelty to souls, and
exasperating in its relentless efforts to pervert and subvert the clear gospel
of Jesus Christ. Little wonder is it that Luther would assert that
"Justification is the article on which the Church stands or falls."
But even as the mystery of iniquity (2 Thess. 2:7) worked itself out with
increasing clarity and consistency in the Roman Church throughout the
centuries, so did the Lord Jesus raise up men, like Luther, who were more than
conquerors of this and Rome's other heresies. Eminent among these was the
exceedingly learned and pious Puritan, Dr. John Owen.
Owen's work on
justification has long been considered one of the classic Protestant
treatments. We are thus confident his writing will, by the blessing of the blessed
Spirit of grace, be an effectual antidote to the poisonous perversions of the
Man of Sin (2 Thes. 2:3) -- while also helping to obliterate the specious
distinctions and definitions invented by the Papists to adumbrate the plain
truths of Scripture concerning justification. More than for historical or
polemical purposes however, Owen's treatise should capture the attention and
careful study of the faithful because it is written for them: the lovers of
Christ and His truths. His chief aim was not to address those who opposed the
truth (though in handling the subject he overwhelmingly vanquishes them).
Rather, Owen writes,
I
shall assure them that, in the handling of it, from first to last, I have had
no other design but only to inquire diligently into the divine revelation of
that way, and those means, with the causes of them, whereby the conscience of a
distressed sinner may attain assured peace with God through our Lord Jesus
Christ. I lay more weight on the steady direction of one soul in this inquiry,
than on disappointing [i.e., refuting] the objections of twenty wrangling or
fiery disputers.... To declare and vindicate the truth, unto the instruction
and edification of such as love it in sincerity, to extricate their minds from
those difficulties (in this particular instance) which some endeavour to cast
on all gospel mysteries, to direct the consciences of them that inquire after
abiding peace with God, and to establish the minds of them that do believe, are
the things I have aimed at.
Taste then, and
see the goodness of the Lord through His servant, as he masterfully deals with
the following subjects: the nature of justifying faith; the use of faith in
justification; the proper sense of the words "justification" and
"to justify;" distinction of a first and second justification (taught
by the Roman Catholic Church); the nature and use of evangelical personal
righteousness; imputation and the nature of it; imputation of sin unto Christ;
principal controversies about justification; nature of the obedience or
righteousness required unto justification; imputation of Christ's righteousness
to us; the differences between the two covenants stated; all works whatsoever
expressly excluded from any interest in our justification before God;
objections against the doctrine of justification by the imputation of the
righteousness of Christ; seeming difference -- but no real contradiction --
between the apostles Paul and James, concerning justification; and more! Sure
to be a balm to the soul, and to put a song of praise into the heart of God's
children as they draw closer thereby to their God, who is their righteousness
(Jer. 23:6)! 457

35. ARROWSMITH, JOHN
The
Covenant Avenging Sword Brandished (1643)
This famous
sermon (of 32 pages), on Leviticus 26:25, "I shall bring a sword upon you,
that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant," (by one of the more
prominent men that was shortly thereafter called to the Westminster Assembly)
was preached "Before the Honorable (English--RB) House of Commons, At
Their Late Solemn Fast, February 1 (1643)". It demonstrates that it is the
Scriptural duty of nations and their rulers to covenant with Christ and to seek
God's glory in all things -- which is especially important in the case of civil
leaders in their office as civil leaders. For, as Arrowsmith shows, if this is
not done (with godly zeal), God's wrath (in the form of blindness to the truth,
in a lack of fear of the judgment that is to come, in storms and wars and other
calamities, etc.) will be poured out upon those nations which refuse to
"kiss the Son" by obeying and covenanting with Him.
Be
wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve
the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry,
and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are
all they that put their trust in him (Ps. 2:10-12).
In this sermon
Arrowsmith also summons the English parliament to new obedience to Christ. Some
suggest that Arrowsmith may have been the main shaper of the Shorter Catechism.
"Cotton Mather says... 'everything of Arrowsmith is admirable'... He was
clearly respected as both a preacher and a scholar by the (Westminster--RB)
Assembly, which he repeatedly summoned to unity and diligence in its work"
(Barker, Puritan Profiles, p. 148).
