Now, for the first time ever, ordinary Christians can have direct and near effortless access to the very cream of Puritan and Reformed, as well as Covenanter, literature... What they used to say of the Puritan John Flavel's preaching, can be said of these CDs: they are 'hissing hot'! ... more" (emphases added).

"I have been systematically working through reading the... Reformed CDs I purchased. I must say, there is nothing like them available anywhere. It is the most amazing collection of works I know of in one package to date... The Puritan and Reformed material presented on these CDs is exceptional. I am continually amazed at the depth and breadth of information in both collections, and the rarity of works that I now have at my fingertips. You have done an immeasurable service for the Kingdom of Christ in making these CDs available, and every pastor and theologian should own them without question (they would be foolhardy to pass them by) ... more"

The Puritans and Books

"Our books may come to be seen where ourselves shall never be heard.

These may preach where the author cannot, and (which is more) when he is

not.' This prediction by one of the great Puritans has had many

fulfilments. An ungodly Welsh clergyman, shopping at a fair in the

eighteenth century, bought an article which happened to be wrapped in a

page torn from an old Puritan folio. The reading of that one page led to

his sound conversion. As Luther said, 'Satan hates the use of pens,' and

never were pens more powerfully wielded in the cause of God than by the

Puritan divines of the seventeenth century. Nor have their books

outlived their usefulness. Although the original volumes are worn with

age, the truths found in them are as fresh as the new formats in which

they are now appearing" (Publisher's forward to Richard Sibbes', The

Bruised Reed [$7.96 Canadain funds], emphases added).

Resource 1. NONCONFORMIST MINISTERS

Farewell Sermons of Some of the Most Eminent of the Nonconformist Ministers Delivered at the Period of Their Ejectment By the Act of Uniformity in the Year 1662 (1816 edition)

Originally printed in two volumes, in 1662 and 1663, this is the later (1816) one volume edition. It includes 24 of the original 31 sermons and an historical and biographical preface. These sermons are some of the most heartfelt sermons that you may ever encounter, as well as an excellent example of Puritan preaching at its finest. Thomas Manton, Thomas Watson, William Jenkyn, Richard Baxter, Thomas Brooks, Thomas Case, and a number of other famous Puritans all have their farewell sermons to their congregations included in this book. The stands taken by these ministers brought loss of income, loss of earthly comforts, persecution and even death -- thus the topics they dwelt upon are of great importance to Christians of all ages. 465 pages.

Resource 2. BAYLY, LEWIS

The Practice of Piety (c. 1611, 1842)

"In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries this work was the most universally read English book on devotion next to Pilgrim's Progress. Bunyan himself ascribes the commencement of his spiritual life in some measure to the perusal of this practical handbook on piety... First published in the early 1600's... by 1792, (it was in) its seventy-first English edition... (It has) appeared in most European languages, including Dutch (1620), French (1625), German (1692), and Polish (1647). New England Puritans even translated it into the Indian language used in Massachusetts (1665)... Bayly's puritan convictions brought him into frequent conflict... in 1621 he was imprisoned for some months for his aversion to the infamous Book of Sports, and for other minor charges... Bayly's Practice of Piety is replete with practical, Puritan guidelines on the pursuit of holy living. The author commences his work with 'a plain description of God [in] his essence, person, and attributes.' He treats the doctrines of God as a basis for piety and divine grace as a ground for every grace which we sinners need. The remainder of the volume deals with the reasons for, and the conditions and objectives of piety... In short, this is a book about how to live well and how to die well... Read The Practice of Piety slowly, meditatively, prayerfully, and, I would recommend annually. Ask yourself repeatedly, 'Am I putting this wise spiritual director's scriptural advice into practice? Am I pursuing holiness -- that holiness without which no man shall please God or be received into the eternal glories of a holy heaven?'" (Joel Beeke). Here is a sample of Bayly's writing, "But God was more displeased with Cain for despairing of his mercy, than for murdering his brother; and with Judas for hanging himself, than for betraying his master: in that they would make the sins of mortal men greater than the infinite mercy of the eternal God; or as if they could be more sinful, than God was merciful: whereas the least drop of Christ's blood is of more merit to procure God's mercy for thy salvation, than all the sins that thou hast committed can be of force to provoke his wrath to thy damnation" (The Practice of Piety, pp. 294-295). 368 pages.

Resource 3. DURHAM, JAMES

The Law Unsealed; or, a Practical Exposition of the Ten Commandments. With a Resolution of Several Momentous Questions and Cases of Conscience. (1675, 1802 edition)

Durham, a Scottish Covenanter, was known as a "'very candid and searching preacher,' who in an instant was 'in the inmost corners of your bosom,' though with the utmost 'caution and meekness, without giving any of his hearers the smallest ground to fret and repine at his freedom in dealing with them'" (Carstairs cited in the Dictionary of Scottish Church History, p. 266). John Owen, in his letter introducing the reader to this volume, writes, "In the whole a full testimony is given, not only against the profligate lives of many, called Christians, but that barren careless profession also, which too many satisfy themselves withal, who pretend more unto the truth and power of religion. And as those who are sincere in their obedience may, in the examination of themselves, by the rules here laid down, discern the decays which possibly they have fallen under in this hour of temptation, which is come on the face of the earth, to try them that dwell therein, so also may they be directed in their Christian course unto the glory of God, and the comfort of their own souls." Durham's lectures deal with each commandment in order and the volume contains "An Alphabetical Table of the Principal Matters Handled in the Whole Book;" making it eminently practical, and a very useful aid to the study of God's holy, just, good and spiritual law (Rom. 7:12). 422 pages.

Resource 4. LONDON MINISTERS,

James Nichols, ed.

Puritan Sermons 1659-1689

(6 volumes, reprinted 1844)

These are "The Morning Exercises at Cripplegate, St. Giles in the Fields, and in Southwark by 75 Ministers of the Gospel in or Near London with Notes and Translations by James Nichol." Volumes vary in length from 624 to 804 pages and cover a great number of topics that are essential to the Puritan view of God, the world and the Christian life. The Preface notes, "This celebrated collection of useful and orthodox theology consists... of practical as well as doctrinal discourses, preached by some of the most eminent divines of the 17th century, and published at irregular intervals between the years 1660 and 1691." Volume six, "The Morning Exercises against Popery; or the principal Errors of the Church of Rome detected and confuted... has always been deemed a standard book on that great controversy," which even in that day was "recently revived... Two of the volumes here described were published prior to the year 1662; consequently all the authors of the sermons in those volumes were Conformists up to that time; and though the majority of them afterwards became for consciences' sake, Nonconformists, yet this circumstance, instead of detracting from their moral and intellectual worth, has served, through intervening years, to enhance their character, in public estimation, as divines of great talents, erudition, and purity." In short, a sound, useful and judicious collection of Puritan divinity. Includes sermons by John Owen, Thomas Watson, Thomas Manton, Matthew Poole, Richard Baxter, William Greenhill, James Janeway, Edmund Calamy, Thomas Vincent and many other able ministers of the Gospel. Volume six contains a phenomenal set of indices (covering all six volumes) which run 179 pages in length.

The History of Redemption

"[A] massive theological treatise in the form of history," notes Christian History magazine (Vol. 4, No. 4, p. 6). He planned to trace the workings of God from Creation to his own day." Edwards chronicles God's mercy and faithfulness to His Church and the destruction of His enemies. Written from the older postmillennial perspective, useful insights abound. 359 pages.

Resource 8. PRICE, GREG

Christmass Condemned By Christ (3 sermons, 1998)

Price shows how the teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ condemns all man-invented holy days. Scripture and history are brought to bear most specifically on the celebration of Christ-mass, demonstrating why it is a sin to celebrate this day. It is also noted that Scripture never commands the celebration of this day and that there is no evidence that Christ and the Apostles ever celebrated this day -- in fact, this sycretism of paganism and "Babylonian" Christianity was not first celebrated until 354 A.D. (when December 25 was chosen, in accord with the Pagan feast of Saturnalia, as the day of "celebration"). Price also clearly shows that to call yourself Reformed while you hold on to this Roman Catholic/Pagan monument of idolatry makes for a serious contradiction in your testimony -- as the best Reformed churches have always disciplined those (in accord with Scriptural teaching) who broke the second and fourth commandments by keeping antichristian festival days like Christ-mass, Easter, etc.. Citations from Luther, Calvin and the company of Geneva Pastors, the Church of Scotland's First Book of Discipline, the 1620 Dutch Synod, the Civil Government of Holland (1625), the U.S. Colonies and the Westminster Assembly all speak with one voice against this Romish corruption. Common objections against the classic Reformed position are also answered. "Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen" (Jer. 10:2). Resource 10. HALYBURTON, THOMAS

Natural Religion Insufficient, and Revealed Necessary, to Man's Happiness in His Present State: Or, A Rational Enquiry Into the Principles of the Modern Deists; Wherein is Largely Discovered Their Utter Insufficiency to Answer the Great Ends of Religion, and the Weakness of Their Pleadings For the Sufficiency of Nature's Light to Eternal Happiness: and Particularly the Writings of the Late Learned Lord Herbert, the Great Patron to Deism, to Wit, His Books de Veritate, de Religione Gentilium, and Religio Laici, in So Far As They Assert Nature's Light Able To Conduct Us To Future Blessedness, Are Considered, and Fully Answered. To Which is Added, An Essay Concerning the Nature of Faith; Or, The Ground Upon Which Faith Assents to the Scriptures: Wherein the Opinion of the Rationalists About It, Is Stated By the Learned Mr. Locke In His Book On Human Understanding (1798)

Halyburton's "Natural Religion Insufficient" was his magnum opus. Tempted by deism in his younger years, Halyburton wrote against the English Deists, particularly George Herbert. Long considered a standard work of apologetics, it went through a number of editions over the next hundred years. John Newton said he would not part with it 'for its weight in gold' and termed it 'a masterpiece'. He also highly commended the essay on faith which was printed along with it. Halyburton's doctrine as a whole is warmly evangelical; he expressly rejected the legalism of Richard Baxter, Daniel Williams and late seventeenth-century English Presbyterianism. His sermons were heart-searching and intensely practical," writes David Lachman (Cameron, ed., Dictionary of Scottish Church History and Theology, p. 388). 464 pages, indexed.

Resource 12. BARROW, GREG

Covenanted Uniformity: The Protestant Remedy for Disunity

These tapes, read by Larry Birger, are chapter 3 in Greg Barrow's The Covenanted Reformation Defended (free at: http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualnls/misrep3.htm ). They set forth the scriptural, Protestant view of public social covenanting, showing how the National Covenant of Scotland and the Solemn League and Covenant of England, Scotland and Ireland bind us today, and how the renewal of these will heal the deplorable disunity of the Church. "Cardinal doctrines of Protestantism" (to borrow the words of Charles Hodge) such as the doctrine of churches and nations being "moral persons" are clearly explained, and the separationist "deep pit of covenant breaking" into which the modern Church has fallen is laid open and a helping hand extended. A must for those wishing to understand the biblical doctrine of covenanting, and the principles and practice of our Protestant forefathers!

Resource 13. PRICE, GREG

I John 4:7 (#18) Worldwide Calvinistic Unity and Loving One Another (1997)

An amazing sermon which exposes all unity which is not based on truth (e.g. in groups like Promise Keepers) as necessarily based on lies -- and as treason against King Jesus! Defends the Reformation view of visible and covenanted unity and uniformity from Scripture, and from pertinent quotes from Calvin (during first Reformation), Henderson (the second Reformation architect of the Solemn League and Covenant), and others. Exhibits how Reformed teaching has always viewed the real schismatics (whether in the majority or minority) as those who press "independent denominationalism" and as those who tolerate a sinful multiformity -- against the national establishment of the one true Reformed religion. Calvin and the Geneva Presbytery of his day even counseled excommunication and exile for those that would not swear to their "covenanted uniformity" in upholding the Geneva Confession of 1536 (cf. Calvin, Covenanting and Close Communion by Reg Barrow, free at: http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualnls/CalvinCC.htm ). Moreover, Price shows how our scandalous modern multiformists (which includes the leaders of most so-called "conservative Presbyterian" denominations today) teach and act in direct opposition to Christ's high priestly prayer in John 17, as well as the high standard of visible unity that will one day be attained worldwide (as seen in the prophetic words found in Zechariah 14:9: "And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one"). Furthermore, the portion of this sermon dealing with loving the brethren is one of the most convicting practical sections of a contemporary sermon that we have ever heard. Such preaching is extremely humbling, calculated to exalt Christ and His truth, and to drive sinful human beings to the throne of grace -- seeking everlasting mercy and forgiveness in the only place that it can truly be found. In short, Price calls us back to our first love (individually) and to the biblical attainments of our covenanted forefathers (corporately). It is unlikely that you will find modern preaching much better than this.

Resource 16. WESTMINSTER DIVINES & OTHER PURITANS (Gouge, Gataker, et al.)

The Westminster Annotations and Commentary on the Whole Bible

(6 volumes, 1657)

The original title read: "Annotations Upon all the Books of the Old and New Testament: This Third, above the First and Second, Edition so enlarged, As they make an entire Commentary on the Sacred Scriptures: The like never before published in English. Wherein the Text is Explained, Doubts Resolved, Scripture Parallel'd, and Various Readings observed; By the Labour of certain Learned Divines thereunto appointed, and therein employed, As is expressed in the Preface." The preface (found in the first volume) recounts not only a short history of the English Bible, but sets forth the great advantage to true Religion which accrues (contrary to the mysticism of the Anabaptists and the anti-intellectualism of the modern backsliding church) when faithful notes are "bound in" with the Scripture text -- this bringing forth nothing different than the effect generated (through God's grace) by faithful preaching, faithful commentaries, faithful creeds, faithful covenants, faithful confessions, etc. Pointing out that this blessing from God was never more obvious than in the case of the Geneva Bible ($159.95, leather hardcover) and its marginal notes (and that the people knew it to be so when they were left with Bibles without annotations honoring to God), the preface further states, "hence were divers of the Stationers and Printers of London induced (by the people--RB) to petition the committee of the Honourable House of Commons, for licence to print the Geneva notes upon the Bible, or that some notes might be fitted to the new translation: which was accordingly granted, with an order for review and correction of those of the Geneva edition, by leaving out such of them as there was cause to dislike, by clearing those that were doubtful, and by supplying such as were defective. For which purpose letters were directed to some of us from the Chair of the Committee for Religion (in 1648--RB), and personal invitations to others, to undertake and divide the task among us, and so cometh in our part, whereof we shall give the world a true and just account in that which followeth." The detailed account which follows in the preface is fascinating, mentioning, among many other things, the divines' "use of... the Dutch Bibles... set forth at... Holland, by order of the States."

The diligence given, the energy expended, the obvious humility, and the fearful trembling before God's Word which is evident in these commentators makes this truly a classic Puritan work -- a work of great value! Just knowing, as Barker points out, that this commentary was "prepared mostly by Westminster divines, by order of Parliament, at the time of the Assembly" (Puritan Profiles, p. 37), certainly bodes well for the level of scholarship it contains. Moreover, with Gouge, one of the most respected English Covenanters at the Assembly playing a major role, the thoughtful student of Scripture and history ought to take note: for a theological feast of mature Puritan thought surely awaits those that sup at this table. Esteemed, by the mid-1640's, "as the father of the London Ministers," Gouge was elected as Assessor for the Westminster Assembly on Nov. 25, 1647. His detractors sometimes called him an "arch Puritan" (cf. Ibid., p. 35). Dr. Gouge's "share of the useful work consisted of Kings, and the subsequent books down to Esther, inclusive" (Smith, Select Memoirs of English and Scottish Divines, p. 534). Most of the others chosen to this work had similar credentials, though not all exhibit equal proficiency and some later backslid from attainments reached at this point. Nevertheless, when the commentators were first chosen, these Annotations were produced by some of the most qualified English Puritans -- as a historical high water mark for Puritan scholarship was beginning to crest. Furthermore, in prosecuting this work the divines note, "therefore we have put ourselves to much more pains (for many months) in consulting with many more authors, in several languages, than at first we thought of, that (for the propriety of the original text, for pertinent and profitable variety of versions, for consonancy of parallel Scriptures, and for perspicuity in clearing of the darkest places) we might bring in such observations, as might not only serve to edify the ordinary reader, but might likewise gratify our brethren of the ministry, at least such among them, as have not the means to purchase, or leisure to pursue, so many books, as (by order of the Committee) we were furnished with all, for the finishing of the work, committed to our hands" (preface). As the work wore on, however, it became apparent that the original intention (of printing these annotations as marginal notes in the Bible) would no longer fit the scope and length of commentary that had been produced. Thus, the notes were not added to the Scriptures directly, but rather published as a separate commentary (which we are offering here) -- except that we have divided the work into six volumes rather than the original two, because of logistics. 2383 (8.5" X 11") pages.

And since he is our age (just out of the teen years himself), he knows what he's talking about. One of the things that I like the most about Josh's writing is that he brings it all back to the Bible and how we can really live what it says. Resource B. GOUGE, WILLIAM

Hebrews Commentary (1655, 1866 edition, 3 volumes)

Originally titled: "A Learned and Very Useful Commentary on the Whole Epistle to the Hebrews; Wherein Every Word and Particle in the Original is Explained, and the Emphasis Thereof Fully Shewed; the Sense and Meaning of Every Verse Logically and Exactly Analyzed; Genuine Doctrines Naturally Raised; The Manifold Types of Christ Unveiled, etc. Being the Substance of Thirty Years' Wednesday's Lectures at Blackfriars, London." Darling calls this "a labourious and valuable work, of very rare occurrence" (Cyclopaedia Bibliographica, p. 1295). "We greatly prize Gouge," writes Spurgeon of this commentary, "upon any topic which he touches he gives outlines which may supply sermons for months" (Commenting on Commentaries). Gouge was a leader among the Covenanted English Presbyterians, a respected member of the Westminster Assembly and one of its most active members. Some of his enemies vilified him as an "Arch Puritan." 1162 pages of the cream of Puritan-style commentating.

Resource C. MANTON, THOMAS

The Complete Works of Thomas Manton

(22 Volumes)

Manton was "one of the most eminent of the Nonconformist divines." He was born in 1620 and died in 1677. He was chosen to write "The Epistle to the Reader: Especially Heads of Families" of the famous Westminster standards. "Received episcopal institution in 1661. Resigned in 1662, on account of the Act of Uniformity (which among other wicked, Satanic enactments, its principal terms required a "declaration of 'unfeigned assent and consent' to everything contained in the Book of Common Prayer, re-ordination for those not episcopally ordained" and, most evil of all, "a renunciation of the Solemn League and Covenant. Knowing that the Puritans would not submit to such terms, the Authorities framed the Act to secure their expulsion" cf. Sermons of the Great Ejection by Iain Murray [Banner of Truth, reprinted 1962]). He was a man of great learning and extensive reading, of a sound judgement, and had the art of reducing volumes of divinity into a narrow compass. According to Charnock, he was the best collector of sense of the age. Dr. Bates says , 'A clear judgement, rich fancy, strong memory, and happy elocution, met in him, and were excellently improved by diligent study'" (James Darling, Cyclopaedia Bibliographica, 1854, pp. 1953-1954). Includes Manton's better known volumes, such as his commentary on James and Jude and his Sermons on Psalm 119, as well as a host of other practical preaching, teaching and Scriptural exposition. The 22nd volume contains two large indices (by subject and text). A full list of everything included in this massive set is at: http://www.swrb.com/catalog/M.htm.

Resource D. THE ENGLISH HEXAPLA EXHIBITING THE SIX IMPORTANT ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT SCRIPTURES, WICLIF, TYNDALE, CRANMER, GENEVAN, ANGLO-RHEMISH, AUTHORIZED OR KING JAMES VERSION (1841)

"Hexapla," of course, means "six-fold" or "six-columned" As the section of this book explaining the "Plan of the English Hexapla" notes, "the term 'Hexapla' was originally applied to the work executed by Origen in the 3rd century; in which the first column contained the Hebrew Text of the Old Testament; the second, the Hebrew text in Greek letters; the third, Aquila's Greek version; the fourth, the translation of Symmachus; the fifth, the LXX version (i.e. the Septuagint--RB); the sixth, Theodotion's version." The English Hexapla offered here contains the six English translations noted in the title, arranged side by side for easy comparison and reference. Dates for each version used are as follows: Wiclif (1380), Tyndal (1534), Cranmer (1539), Geneva (1557), Rheims (1582), King James Version (1611). Of special interest may be the Geneva 1557 version (from a copy of the first edition), as both Geneva Bible's presently in print contain later versions (1599 and 1602) of this text. It should also be noted that the notes to the Geneva Bible are not included in the English Hexapla, just the text. The 1611 edition of the KJV will also be of value to those who would like to compare it with the more modern version of this translation. "The notation of the verses has been inserted in all the translations, for convenience of reference... In illustration of the utility of the comparison of the various translations, much that is interesting might be advanced, but which the use of the volume will at once afford. The varied, although ordinarily equivalent manner in which the different translators render the same phrase, often throws much light upon the exact meaning; and when the versions vary in sense, the enquiry suggested with reference to the Original cannot fail to afford profit while it interests" ("Plan of the English Hexapla," pp. 161-162). Additionally this English Hexapla also includes "The original Greek text after Scholz with the various readings of the Textus Receptus and the principal Constantinopolitan and Alexanderine manuscripts, and a complete collation of Scholz's text with Griesbach's edition of 1805... The Greek text has been placed in the upper part of each page, for the purpose of facilitating the comparison of the versions with the Original, so desirable when they vary in rendering any passage." This is all preceeded by a detailed and annotated 160 page historical account of the English translations.

Resource E. BANNERMAN, JAMES

Church of Christ: A Treatise on the Nature, Powers, Ordinances, Discipline, and Government of the Christian Church (1869)

Two large volumes. A classic on the Church and worship! This is one of the most extensive studies of its kind ever compiled. Nothing compares to it on this subject. Regarding these gems, Iain Murray has stated, "In our day, however greatly we need an evangelical revival, we need more than that. We need another Reformation, a movement which will go 'to the root of the mischief' and bring back the visible church to the pattern of God's Word in her government, ordinances and ministry. The republication of Bannerman is a step in that direction... For those who wish to study the doctrine of the Church in its several aspects as it was held by the majority of the Reformers, Puritans, Covenanters and leaders of 'The Third Reformation,' it will prove an invaluable textbook."
