"I have been systematically working through reading the... Reformed CDs I purchased. I must say, there is nothing like them available anywhere. It is the most amazing collection of works I know of in one package to date... The Puritan and Reformed material presented on these CDs is exceptional. I am continually amazed at the depth and breadth of information in both collections, and the rarity of works that I now have at my fingertips. You have done an immeasurable service for the Kingdom of Christ in making these CDs available, and every pastor and theologian should own them without question (they would be foolhardy to pass them by) ... more"

"And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it" (Isa. 2:2).

On the eve of what is virtually certain to become know as the Christian millennium (when nations will covenant with King Jesus throughout the globe) we thought that it would be fitting to release am EMAIL SUPER SALE on the Reformation eschatology of victory (historicist postmillennialism) -- written Dec. 29, 1999.

"The Counter Reformation is generally considered to have three aspects: the Jesuits, the Inquisition, and the Council of Trent. In view of the significance of the Protestant apocalyptic interpretation of history which prophetically pinpointed step by step the events covering the whole Christian era from the beginning to the end (i.e. historicism--RB), it seems justifiable to suggest a fourth aspect, namely the praeteristic and futuristic interpretations launched by Catholic expositors as a counterattack" (from the summary of Horae Apocalypticae resource #3 below).

This CD contains:

ELLIOTT, E.B.

Horae Apocalypticae; or, A Commentary on the Apocalypse, Critical and Historical; Including Also An Examination of the Chief Prophecies of Daniel. Illustrated by an Apocalyptic Chart, and Engravings from Medals and Other Extant Monuments of Antiquity. With Appendices: Containing, Besides Other matters, A Sketch of the History of Apocalyptic Interpretation, Critical Reviews of the Chief Apocalyptic Counter-Schemes, and Indices. (4 volumes, 1862)

All the major Reformers and all the major Reformation creeds and confessions adopted the historicist position -- and it is this position that Elliott so skillfully defends. Included in Horae Apocalypticae you will also find a very useful historical survey of who held which positions concerning eschatology, much history on the Roman empire (and its interaction with Christianity), how the Reformation, Islam, etc., were prophesied in the Apocalypse, a world chronology according to the Hebrew Scriptures (which would make the Earth 6127 years old), patristic views of prophecy, the beast and his mark (666) revealed, and much more. The Papacy is also shown to be the apocalyptic antichrist, which was a standard position among the Reformers. Elliott also deals with Moses Stuart's Preterism.

Concerning Elliott's Horae Apocalypticae H. Gratton Guinness, writes, "The 'Horae Apocalypticae' of Elliott, which may well be considered as the most important and valuable commentary of the Apocalypse which has ever been written, was also called into existence by Futurist attacks on the Protestant interpretation of prophecy (and the same would apply in our day, but even more so, as the classic Protestant system of interpretation for the book of Revelation is still being undermined by the Jesuit inspired Futurist system, but also, increasingly [even in so-called "Reformed" circles] by the other Jesuit inspired system: Preterism!--RB)."

"His Horae Apocalypticae (Hours with the Apocalypse) [literally 'time with the Apocalypse'] is doubtless the most elaborate work ever produced on the Apocalypse... Begun in 1837, its 2500 pages of often involved and overloaded text are buttressed by some 10,000 invaluable references to ancient and modern works bearing on the topics under discussion.... Perhaps its most unique feature is the concluding sketch of the rise and spread of the Jesuit counter systems of interpretation that had made such inroads upon Protestantism" (http://www.historicist.com/horae.htm).

"When he (Spurgeon--ed.) reaches the book of Revelation his clear recommendation is E.B. Elliott's Horae Apocalypticae. He succinctly states that it was "the standard work". It would surprise most Baptists today to realize that this most eminent Baptist preacher was himself an Historicist or Continuist as he called it then. Elliott's work was the standard work in 1878 because the Historicist interpretation was still the standard in Protestantism and this work had gone through 4 editions and had established itself as the standard within the Historicist school" (http://www.historicist.com).

2611 pages, with a 29 page index.

M'LEOD, ALEXANDER

Lectures Upon the Principal Prophecies of the Revelation (1814)

David Steele writes, "I can again cordially recommend to his attention the Lectures of Doctor M'Leod, as the best exposition of those parts of the Apocalypse of which he treats, that has come under my notice."

EDWARDS, JONATHAN

The History of Redemption

"[A] massive theological treatise in the form of history," notes Christian History magazine (Vol. 4, No. 4, p. 6). Furthermore, regarding Edwards' work on this book, CH states, "To prepare himself for the task, he read every historical work he could lay his hands on. He planned to trace the workings of God from Creation to his own day." Edwards chronicles God's mercy and faithfulness to His Church and the destruction of His enemies. Written from the older postmillennial perspective, useful insights abound. 359 pages.

BROWN, DAVID

Christ's Second Coming: Will It Be Premillennial? (1882, 1990)

One of the most devastating books ever written against premillennialism, written by a former premillennialist. The New Schaff-Herzog Religious Encyclopedia observed, this work is widely regarded "a classic."

BROWN, DAVID

The Restoration of the Jews (1861, 1990)

The bulk of the book consists of David Brown's classic work focusing on Romans 11, The Restoration of the Jews (1861). This is the same David Brown that had a hand in the Jamieson, Fausset and Brown Commentary and whose "most enduring work... Christ's Second Coming: Will It Be Premillennial? ...remains the classic evangelical polemic against premillennialism" (Dictionary of Scottish Church History and Theology, p. 97). In short, this book demonstrates that Scripture teaches (and the best Reformation theologians concur) that the future will be most glorious for the Jews -- when they, as a people, are drawn by God's irresistible grace to the Lord Jesus Christ.

BROWN, DAVID

The Apocalypse: Its Structure and Primary Predictions (1891)

Nearly 50 years after he penned one of the most devastating refutations of premillennialism ever seen (Christ's Second Coming: Will It Be Premillennial?), this ex-premil (after repeated solicitations to do so) penned this book. It deals specifically with the book of Revelation from a historicist, postmillennial position.

STACY, JAMES

Hand-book of Prophecy, Containing a Brief Outline of the Prophecies of Daniel and John, Together with a Critical Essay on the Second Advent

A historicist work, by a Presbyterian, written in the early twentieth century, which proposes to give "a brief outline of the prophecies of John, as set forth in the book of Revelation, and as usually held by leading interpreters." Includes helpful charts, tables and diagrams and compares some of the major differences between systems of eschatology.

MEDE, JOSEPH

The Apostasy of the Latter Times: In which, (according to divine prediction) the world should wonder after the Beast, the Mystery of Iniquity should so far prevail over the Mystery of Godliness, whorish Babylon over the virgin-Church of Christ; as that the visible glory of the True Church should be much clouded, the True unstained Christian Faith corrupted, the purity of true worship polluted. Or, The Gentiles Theology of Demons, i.e. inferior divine powers: Supposed to be mediators between God and man: Revived in the Latter times amongst Christians, in worshipping of Angels, deifying and invocating of Saints, adoring and templing of Relics, bowing down to Images, worshipping of Crosses, etc. All which, together with a true discovery of the Nature, Origin, Progress, of the great, fatal, and solemn Apostasy, are cleared. Delivered in public some years since upon I Tim. 4:1,2,3. (1641, 1845 edition)

Birks, in his introduction writes, "for close and varied research, happily applied to illustrate an important warning of Scripture, few works can claim equal praise. No treatise, perhaps, has had a more powerful and lasting effect in unmasking the Christian idolatries of former ages, and thus forming a strong bulwark against the proud pretensions of the Roman Antichrist" (p. i). Solves the "666" mystery! We have also added Twisse's preface from the 1641 edition. 343 pages.

BARNES, ALBERT

Notes, Explanatory and Practical, on the Book of Revelation (1872)

Having gone into the writing of this commentary with no preconceived notions, Barnes notes how he was surprised "to find how nearly (his) views coincide with those taken by the great body of Protestant interpreters." He further notes that "perhaps this fact may be regarded as furnishing some evidence that, after all the obscurity attending it, there is a natural and obvious interpretation of which the book is susceptible." The Protestant confessions also attest to this fact, having all taken the historicist view of the book of Revelation. 506 pages.

SYMINGTON, WILLIAM

Messiah the Prince or, the Mediatorial Dominion of Jesus Christ (1884)

This is the standard work on the kingdom of God in English! There is nothing else like it; it is one-of-a kind! It covers the necessity, reality, and qualifications of Christ's dominion over not only the church, but all nations too. Anything less is to rob Christ of His magnificent, majestic, mediatorial glory -- for He is the King of kings and Lord of lords. "While books on the priestly work of the Redeemer, and especially on the Atonement, are numerous," notes the introduction to the American edition, "no formal and exhaustive discussion of the kingly office of the Messiah... and its application to various classes of moral agents is elsewhere to be found... It is cause for satisfaction that the only treatise, as yet, upon this subject, is a work of signal ability, lucid in arrangement, reverent in spirit, and with hardly an exception, sound and judicious in its conclusion. Its very merits are probably, in part, the reason why no other work on the same subject has appeared, and until it is supplanted by a better work -- an event not likely soon to occur -- it will have a value peculiar to itself." In short, this is a unique book devoted to the absolute Kingship and dominion of the Lord Jesus Christ -- over all heaven and earth!

GUINNESS, H. GRATTAN
Romanism and the Reformation from the Standpoint of Prophecy (1891)

As the author states,

We have suffered prophetic anti-papal truth to be too much forgotten. This generation is dangerously latitudinarian -- indifferent to truth and error on points which Scripture is tremendously decided and absolutely clear. These lectures, simple and popular as they are, will, it is hoped, open many minds to perceive that the Bible gives no uncertain sound as to Romanism, and that those who will be guided by its teachings must shun an apostasy against which the sorest judgements are denounced.

244 pages.

GUINNESS, H. GRATTON

History Unveiling Prophecy or Time as an Interpreter (1905)

This book should be useful to those interested in eschatology, history and hermeneutics. Guinness takes us from "Pre-Constantine, or Martyr Church Stage" to "The Present Stage." Chapters on the Reformation, Puritanism in the seventeenth century and the French Revolution look especially interesting, in connection with the prophetic word. Guinness also deals with "The Modern Denial of the Historic and Protestant Interpretation of the Apocalypse," "Coming Events in Jewish History," "The Practical Use of the Apocalypse," and much more. Three diagrams are included, one on church history as outlined in the Apocalypse. 515 pages, indexed.

This title is in the free books file on all the Reformation Bookshelf CDs.

MURRAY, MATTHEW

The Millennium: Peace, Prosperity and National Covenanting (1879)

This is the Reformation (especially second Reformation) view of postmillennialism as set forth and explained in terms of the national blessings and gospel purity that will be present when the millennium arrives.

WYLIE, SAMUEL B.

The Two Sons of Oil; or, the Faithful Witness for Magistracy and Ministry upon a Scriptural Basis (1850, third edition)

A Covenanter classic opening Revelation 11:3-4 and Zechariah 4:14. It has been hailed as the "best presentation of the position of the Covenanter Church that has been written." Noting that the "[t]ime has been, when the whole body of Presbyterians, in Scotland, England, and Ireland, unanimously subscribed" to these principles, "[f]or civil and ecclesiastical reformation" and that thousands bled and died for the glorious covenanted cause of civil and ecclesiastical reformation

FAIRBAIRN, PATRICK

Prophecy Viewed in Respect to Its Distinctive Nature, Its Special Function, and Proper Interpretation (1865)

A 532-page manual of interpretation focusing on prophecy. Full of applications, it makes for interesting reading. Fairbairn elevates prophetic discussion by helping us to "look into the very nature of God, to behold in his light the laws of eternity, according to which he governs the church and the world," which is "something infinitely higher than a mere knowledge of the future" (Hengstenberg). The sections on the Papacy and Antichrist are some of the best writing on this topic. This book is light years ahead of the modern mush and drivel that is peddled by the prophetic speculators of our day!

DURHAM, JAMES

A Complete Commentary Upon the Book of Revelation (1658, 1799 edition, 2 volumes)

"After all that has been written it would not be easy to find a more sensible and instructive work than this old-fashioned exposition... the mystery of the Gospel fills it with sweet savour" writes Spurgeon of this work (cited in Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 318, emphasis added).

STEELE, DAVID

Notes on the Apocalypse (1870)

Brooks says, "I have derived more knowledge of the Apocalypse from this work than from all other expositions which I have consulted."

STEELE, DAVID

The Two Witnesses: Their Cause, Number, Character, Furniture and Special Work (1859)

This is a great companion volume to Steele's Notes on the Apocalypse (above). Here Steele zeros in on and works primarily from the text of Revelation 11:13, "I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophecy." Steele deals with testimony-bearing, Antichrist, Popery, the beasts of Revelation, the mark of the beast, 666, the image of the beast, civil and ecclesiastical apostasy, Reformation, covenanting, heresy, schism, terms of communion, slavery, sectarianism, Mormonism, Independency, freemasonry, history, worship, idolatry, Britain, the United States, Canada, mystical Babylon, the last days, the ultimate victory of the church and a host of other subjects!

CALVIN, JOHN

The Rise of the Papacy with Proof from Daniel and Paul that the Pope is Antichrist

This is Book 4, Chapter 7 out of the Beveridge edition of Calvin's Institutes. It shows how "the Papacy appeared complete in all its parts, the seat of Antichrist." Rome's impiety, execrable tyranny, and wickedness is also clearly portrayed, in a most pointed manner, by the pen of the great Reformer.

WITSIUS, HERMAN

The Restoration of the Jews: An Extract from Herman Witsius (1806)

GOODWIN, THOMAS

An Exposition of the (Book of) Revelation

An eminent high Calvinist Independent divine who sat at the Westminster Assembly, Goodwin here gives a detailed look at the book of Revelation. Understanding the Reformation position on eschatology, as it is set forth in this work, gives us great insight into why the Romanists (i.e. the Jesuits in particular) were so intent on planting both Preterism (Alcasar, c. 1615) and Futurism (Ribera, c. 1585) among the Protestants. 583 pages.

ELLIOTT, E.B. (Alexander M'Leod, David Steele, George Faber, Thomas Newton)

Islam in Revelation: An Historic Look at Protestant Eschatological Thought on the Rise and Fall of Islam

There are two great antichristian religious systems of deceit revealed in the book of Revelation. The "great western antichrist" of Roman Catholicism (Rev. 17 and 18) and the "great eastern antichrist" of Islam (Rev. 9). This has been the majority position of historic Protestant interpretation (Historicism) for centuries (as all the most faithful Reformers and all the Reformation creeds and confessions attest). For example, the illustrious John Calvin proclaimed that "Mahomet" and "the Pope" are "the two horns of Antichrist."

The following six extracts on Islam's place in prophecy are taken from five Historicist books which Still Waters Revival Books has published over the past years (see the URLs noted below for the full printed editions of each title). These extracts not only clearly show that the rise and fall of Islam is prophesied in Scripture, but they also give us one of the most powerful testimonies to God's sovereignty (over all His creatures and all their actions) in all of the Word of God. In fact, when the historicist position is carefully studied, the prophetic fulfillment in the case of Islam and Revelation chapter nine is seen to be so striking and well attested that "even advocates of other approaches who are adamant in their rejection of the historicist system of interpretation have admitted the convincing nature of this particular identification" (Steve Gregg, commenting on Rev. 9:1-6 in Revelation: Four Views, p. 176).

The following six excerpts on Islam in Revelation comprise 105 printed pages and are taken from:

FLEMING, ROBERT

The First Principles of Apocalyptical Interpretation (1848)

FLEMING, ROBERT

The Rise and Fall of the Papacy (1848)

Explains that historicism deals with the great whore that rides the beast of Revelation as the symbolic representations referring to "the ecclesiastical government of the Papacy, or the apostate church of Rome," and the Roman Empire respectively. Holds to and defends a late date for the writing of the book of Revelation (which was the generally accepted position, concerning the dating of the book of Revelation, of early church for about the first three centuries after Christ). "A reprint," wrote The Patriot, "of one of the most remarkable and sagacious works extant on the subject of unfulfilled prophecy, deserving a perusal as a succinct, learned, and eminently devout exposition of the Apocalypse."

The great Appearances of God for his Church under the New Testament; with many choice Speeches of suffering and dying Christians. Together With Some Memoirs of the Author's Life; in a Sermon preached on the Occasion of his Death. By the late Learned Daniel Burgess. To Which is added an Index, Alphabetically digested, of all the principal Matters contained in the Three Parts; and at the Beginning of the Work a Table of Scot's Phrases, which often occur in reading Mr. Fleming's, Mr. Rutherford's, Mr. Durham's, and other Scot's Author's Works. (1726, 5th ed. corrected)

POND, ENOCH

The Seals Opened; Or, The Apocalypse Explained (1871)

After noting that he found the Jesuit (i.e. Preterist--RB) method of eschatalogical interpretation unsatisfactory, Pond tells us how he came to settle on the historic Protestant method of interpretation (i.e. historicism). Furthermore, he states that, "avoiding the theories of Rationalists and Roman Catholics on the one hand, and of the Adventists (Premillennialists--RB) on the other, the plan of interpretation which we have pursued is the same which has been held by the great body of evangelical ministers and Christians in America and in England for the last hundred years."

BROWN, JOHN (of Haddington)

A Harmony of Scripture Prophecies and History of Their Fulfillment (1784)

Contains a harmony and history of the Scripture prophecies concerning: Adam, Noah, and their families; the Canaanites; Egyptians; Philistines; Ethiopians; Edomites and Amalekites; Moabites and Amonites; Syrians; Assyrians; Chaldeans; Medes and Persians; Greeks; Romans; Ishmaelites, etc.; Scythians, Tartars, Turks; the Lord Jesus Christ; the Romish Antichrist; Israelites, Jews; and the New Testament Church. The final pages give a brief chronology of noted events from the creation (about 6000 years ago according to Brown) to the author's day. This book, Brown notes, taken together with his Sacred Topology; or A Brief View of the Figures and Explication of the Metaphors Contained in Scripture, "form a kind of systematic explication of the whole Old and New Testament."

BROWN, JOHN (of Haddington)

A Brief View of the Figures; and Explication of the Metaphors, Contained in Scripture (1812)

Macfarlane called Brown "perhaps the most remarkable divine that our country has produced" (cited in Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 485). In this book, which is divided into three sections, Brown gives a "general view of the figures of Scripture language," an "explication of metaphors respecting persons" and an "explication of metaphors respecting things." He also notes that "the ensuing work contains a whole system of divine truth, represented in Scripture-metaphors." 480 pages.

NEWTON, ISAAC

Observations Upon the Prophecies of Daniel (1831)

NEWTON, THOMAS

Dissertations on the Prophecies Which Have Remarkably Been Fulfilled, and at this Time are Fulfilling in the World (2 volumes, 1817)

The author defends the historicist position of eschatology. Historicism teaches that a number of the prophecies of Scripture, and especially those in the book of Revelation, will be seen to be fulfilled throughout history. The specific prophetic fulfillments in question (for example what does the "beast" or "the mother of harlots" in Revelation 17 refer to?) are not seen to be past (as in the Preterist system) or future (as in the Futurist system); neither are they spiritualized to refer to general ideas (of good versus evil) without specific historic fulfillment (as in the Typico-Spiritual system). The historicist position was ensconced in all the substantial Reformed confessions (including the preamble to the Decrees of Dort [1618-19] and the Westminster Confession of Faith [1647]); and no major Reformed Confession has ever taken the Preterist or Futurist position (which is not surprising, since both of these positions, as systems, originated with the Jesuits). Historicism was the position held by almost all the Reformers including Luther, Calvin and Knox. This book also covers the whole book of Revelation. Twelfth edition, indexed, 439 (vol. 1) and 440 pages (vol. 2).

Resource 1c. STEELE, DAVID

Notes on the Apocalypse (1870)

In 1779, in their Testimony and Warning Against the Blasphemies and Idolatry of Popery, the Reformed Presbytery called Durham's Complete Commentary... On the Book of Revelation [$39.98, 2 vol. rare bound photocopy], "the best exposition of that book that has yet been published" (p. 61n). Had they had the privilege of reading Steele's Notes on the Apocalypse we are quite certain that they would have given it a similar endorsement. Though written in a different style than Durham's work, Steele's notes on Revelation may be even more valuable in many respects -- Steele having taken a more decided position "in the wilderness." Steele also had the benefit of many more resources, having written over two centuries later. Steele's aim in writing this book is made clear in his own words taken from the preface,

As this work is intended for the instruction and edification of the unlearned, rather than for the entertainment of the learned, words of foreign extract are used as seldom as possible. Practical remarks and reflections are rarely introduced; the principal aim being simply to ascertain and present to the reader the mind of the Holy Spirit. How far this object has been accomplished, is of course left to the judgment of the honest inquirer. The reader, however, in forming his judgment of the value of these Notes, may be reminded of that inspired rule in searching the Scriptures,--"Comparing spiritual things with spiritual." To assist him in the application of this divine rule, many chapters and verses are quoted from other parts of the Bible, but especially within the Apocalypse itself; that by concentrating the various rays upon particular texts or symbols, their intrinsic light may be rendered more luminous. Thus the interpretation given, if correct, may be confirmed and illustrated.

Appendices include a section on, The New Jerusalem, The Antichrist, The Image of the Beast, The Beast's "deadly wound," The Little Book, The Death of the Witnesses, The Mark of the Beast, The First Resurrection, The Identity of the Two Witnesses, Sounding of the Seventh Trumpet and The Title of this Book (i.e. the Book of Revelation--RB). This work also includes various "animadversions on the interpretations (of Revelation--RB) of several among the most learned and approved expositors of Britain and America."

Comments on this work include the four given below, all which were given without the solicitation or knowledge of the author. The Evangelical Repository notes, "the author adduces a greater number of Scriptural illustrations than any other writer on prophecy we ever met with." Hutcheson writes, "I can recommend it to any person as condensing the best thoughts to be had on the subject." Brooks says, "I have derived more knowledge of the Apocalypse from this work than from all other expositions which I have consulted." And finally, John Cunningham comments, "It is neither a dictionary nor concordance; neither a confession of faith, nor an encyclopedia, but a thesaurus of Theology, embodying the characters of all these." Steele dedicated this work to John Cunningham, author of The Ordinance of Covenanting ($14.99 P, $29.00 HP). 323 pages.

Resource 2.

Carstairs, in the introduction to this huge set, comments that the judicious reader "will count the author an interpreter, one among a thousand." This book touches on many subjects "with some practical observations, and several digressions, necessary for vindicating, clearing, and confirming many weighty and important truths." Furthermore, along with a detailed verse by verse interpretation of the book of Revelation it includes (at the end of volume two) a brief summary (containing 24 pages) of the whole book. The complete photocopy set is massive and covers 1750 pages! We would also note that we are offering only a cerlox bound photocopy edition of this work at the present time. This is because Old Paths Publications intends on retypsetting the complete work, adding an introduction (or two), and publishing this set as a regular hardcover book. The Old Paths hardcover should be ready in a year or so and we hope to make it available to you through our catalogue at that time. You may want to wait for the hardcover as it will have the advantage of being retypeset (though it will likely be much more expensive); but if you absolutely need Durham now the cerlox bound photocopy is available.

Resource 3. ELLIOTT, E.B.

Horae Apocalypticae; or, A Commentary on the Apocalypse, Critical and Historical; Including Also An Examination of the Chief Prophecies of Daniel (1862)

The title continues: "Illustrated by an Apocalyptic Chart, and Engravings from Medals and Other Extant Monuments of Antiquity. With Appendices: Containing, Besides Other matters, A Sketch of the History of Apocalyptic Interpretation, Critical Reviews of the Chief Apocalyptic Counter-Schemes, and Indices." This four volume set is respected by many as a scholarly work on eschatology. It will be especially valuable in our day as it absolutely destroys the Jesuit inspired preterist system by conclusively proving a late date for the writing of the book of Revelation. Elliott also demonstrates the impossibility of the futurist system, which, like preterism, was also concocted (as a system) by the Jesuits to counteract the classic Reformation eschatology called historicism. That this is no small issue is clear, as Kevin Reed exhibits (in his book review titled "The Ecclesiology of John Foxe: A book review by Kevin Reed of John Foxe and the Elizabethan Church by V. Norskov Olsen [Berkeley: University of California Press, 1973]") by citing Olsen when he writes,

The Counter Reformation is generally considered to have three aspects: the Jesuits, the Inquisition, and the Council of Trent. In view of the significance of the Protestant apocalyptic interpretation of history which prophetically pinpointed step by step the events covering the whole Christian era from the beginning to the end, it seems justifiable to suggest a fourth aspect, namely the praeteristic and futuristic interpretations launched by Catholic expositors as a counterattack (p. 47).

All the major Reformers and all the major Reformation creeds and confessions adopted the historicist position -- and it is this position that Elliott so skillfully defends. Included in Horae Apocalypticae you will also find a very useful historical survey of who held which positions concerning eschatology, much history on the Roman empire (and its interaction with Christianity), how the Reformation, Islam, etc. were prophesied in the Apocalypse, a world chronology according to the Hebrew Scriptures (which would make the Earth 6127 years old), patristic views of prophecy, the beast and his mark (666) revealed, and much more. The Papacy is also shown to be the apocalyptic antichrist, which was a standard position among the Reformers. Elliott also deals with Moses Stuart's Preterism.

Sadly, one major warning needs to be given about this book. However valuable the contents are as a defense of historicism (and the late date of the book of Revelation), the author adopted the premillennial heresy and thus marred an otherwise useful work when he promotes these views. 2611 pages, with a 29 page index.

Micah 4:1-5 (#9 & #10) Reformation Eschatology, the Millennium and the Victory of Christ's Kingdom (2 sermons, 1998)

The eschatology of the Reformers (and the Reformation Creeds and Confessions) defended and explained: exhibiting the prominent place that the victory of Christ's kingdom (in history) is given in Scripture -- and in the writings of the best Reformers (from Calvin and Cameron, to Witsius [Dutch] and the Westminster Divines [British]). Also demonstrates how the millennium (which Price notes may begin within a generation or two) will include such notable events as the nations bowing to Christ's Kingship civilly, worldwide unity (based on truth, Amos 3:3) in the church, and universal peace in the world. This is hard to dispute just in light of the text from which these sermons are preached:

But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it. For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever (Micah 4:1-5).

If you are interested in Reformed thought and would like a very encouraging overview of the classic Protestant position on eschatology, this is likely the best tape set you will find!

Micah 4:6-8 (#11 & #12) Israel Turns To Christ (2 sermons, 1998)

In 1635 Samuel Rutherford wrote,

O to see the sight, next to Christ's Coming in the clouds, the most joyful! Our elder brethren the Jews and Christ fall upon one another; they will be kind to one another when they meet. O day! O longed for and lovely day-dawn! O sweet Jesus, let me see that sight which will be as life from the dead, thee and thy ancient people in mutual embraces (from The Letters of Samuel Rutherford as cited in Iain Murray's, The Puritan Hope: Revival and the Interpretation of Prophecy [Banner of Truth, 1984, p. 98]).

Price here sets forth the classic Reformation position on the restoration of the Jews, a "system of prophetic interpretation that historically furnished the Biblical basis for the most glorious future imaginable for the Jews!" Resource 7. M'LEOD, ALEXANDER

Lectures Upon the Principal Prophecies of the Revelation (1814)

M'Leod, a Reformed Presbyterian, here defends (in 480 pages) classic historicist Reformation eschatology from the book of Revelation. David Steele, in his Notes on the Apocalypse commends this work numerous times. Steele writes,

the best works to be obtained as helps to understand the prophetic parts of scripture, will be found in the labors of those who, from age to age, have obeyed the gracious call of Christ -- who have 'come out from mystic Babylon,' from the Romish communion, from the mother and her harlot daughters, and who have associated more or less intimately with the witnesses. Among these may be consulted with profit the works of Durham, Mason and M'Leod (p. 312)... The late Rev. Alexander M'Leod, D.D., who had the works of learned predecessors before him, has successfully corrected many of their misinterpretations in his valuable publication, entitled Lectures upon the Principal Prophecies of the Revelation. At the time when he wrote that work, he possessed several advantages in aid of his own expositions. He had access to the most valuable works which had been issued before that date (1814). He was then in the vigor of youthful manhood; and he was also comparatively free from the trammels which in attempts to expound the Apocalypse, have cramped the energies of many a well disciplined mind, political partialities. At the time of these profound studies, he occupied a position 'in the wilderness,' from which as a stand point, like John in Patmos, he could most advantageously survey the passing scenes of providence with the ardor of youthful emotion, and with unsullied affection for his divine master... expressing my obligations to the Doctor's labors, to whose system of interpretation as well as to most of his details, I cheerfully give my approbation in preference to all other expositors whose works it has been in my power to consult (pp. 317-19)... Doctor M'Leod and Mr. Faber (see next item--RB) I consider among the best expositors of the prophecies on which they severally wrote... On material points they have shed much light where those who preceded them left the reader in darkness, or involved him in perplexing labyrinths. Faber preceded M'Leod, and the latter availed himself of all the aid furnished by the former; yet till the 'mystery of God shall be finished,' his people will be receiving accessions of light from the 'sure word of prophecy' (p. 321)... I can again cordially recommend to his attention the Lectures of Doctor M'Leod, as the best exposition of those parts of the Apocalypse of which he treats, that has come under my notice' (p. 324).

But Steele is not shy about pointing out that,

the principal defect pervading the Lectures, and one which most readers will be disposed to view in an opposite light, appears to be, a charity too broad, a catholicity too expansive, to be easily reconciled with a consistent position among the mystic witnesses. Their author, however, deriving much information from the learned labors of English prelates on prophecy, could not 'find in his heart' to exclude them from a place in the honorable roll of the witnesses. I am unable to recognize any of those who are in organic fellowship with the 'eldest daughter of Popery,' as entitled to rank among those who are symbolized as 'clothed in sackcloth.' The two positions and fellowships appear to be obviously incompatible and palpably irreconcilable. It is true that there have been and still are in the English establishment divines who are strictly evangelical; but the reigning Mediator views and treats individuals, as he views and treats the moral person with which individuals freely choose to associate; and we ought to 'have the mind of Christ' (I Cor. 2:16, p. 322-23, bold emphases added throughout).

Notwithstanding a few shortcomings, this is probably the best book available (at present) on the book of Revelation.

Defends classic historicist postmillennialism and its position relative to the 1260 year period mentioned in Scripture.

In the author's words,

(t)reats of a subject peculiarly interesting to every serious Protestant: for the famous period of 1260 prophetic days, so frequently mentioned by Daniel and St. John, comprehends the tyrannical reign of those three great opponents of the Gospel: Popery, Mohammedism, and Infidelity. This period indeed may not improperly be styled the permitted hour of the powers of darkness; since the Church is represented as being in an afflicted and depressed state during the whole of its continuance, and since its expiration will be marked by a signal display of the judgments of God upon his enemies and by the commencement of a new and happy order of things.

Understanding the Reformation position on eschatology, as it is set forth in this work, gives us great insight into as to why the Romanists (i.e. the Jesuits in particular) were so intent on planting both Preterism (Alcasar, c. 1615) and Futurism (Ribera, c. 1585) among the Protestants. 583 pages.

Resource 9. MASON, ARCHIBALD

The Fall of Babylon the Great, by the Agency of Christ, and Through the Instrumentality of His Witnesses: In Four Discourses (1821)

This book is made up of six sermons and one lengthy lecture. The first two sermons (on Rev. 8:5) deal with "Christ the Mediatorial Angel, Casting the Fire of Divine Judgments Into the Earth." The next two sermons (on Rev. 11:6) treat "Christ's Two Witnesses Smiting the Antichristian Earth With All Plagues, As Often As They Will." The first four sermons cover 112 pages. These works are followed with "Remarks on the Sixth Vial, Symbolizing the Fall of the Turkish Empire" on Rev. 16:12 (24 pages), "Remarks on the Seventh Vial, Symbolizing the Fall of Popery and Despotism" Rev. 16:17 and 21:5,6 (24 pages) and the final discourse, "Observations on the Public Covenants Between God and the Church" (104 pages), taking off from, "They are turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, which refused to hear my words; and they went after other gods to serve them: the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers" (Jer. 11:10). David Steele, in his classic Notes on the Apocalypse includes Mason among his list of "distinguished and approved interpreters of the book of Revelation." 264 pages in total.

An Inquiry Into the Times That Shall Be Fulfilled at Antichrist's Fall; The Church's Blessedness in Her Millennial Rest; The Signs that this Happy Season is at Hand; The Prophetic Number Contained in the 1335 Days; and the Christian's Duty, at this Interesting Crisis: in Five Discourses (1818)

Deals with the author's view of the overthrow of Antichrist, when the millennium will begin and what will transpire leading up to that time. Though this book illustrates how some historicists have erred in the specifics of their interpretation (especially regarding their "guesses" at exact dates), works like this can be very instructive for drawing out the larger Scriptural context of historicist thought -- as the system does not stand or fall on any individual chronological expectations, but on its fidelity to Scripture concerning the larger prophetic issues (dating eccentricities notwithstanding). The practical exhortations to Godliness found herein are also of continued value and unaffected by the work's few shortcomings. 248 pages.

Antichrist in Scripture: Luther and Calvin's Doctrine of the Antichrist (1992)

Few Christians know that the anti-Protestant Futurist theory originated with a Spanish Jesuit by the name of Ribera, who, in 1585, published a Commentary on the Revelation, in which he laboured to turn aside the Protestant application of the Apocalyptic prophecies and symbols from the church of Rome. It is also not well known that the anti-Protestant Praterite (preterist) theory came from the pen of a Spanish Jesuit, Alcasar of Seville, who in 1615 published a work having in view the same end as Ribera, viz, to set aside the commonly accepted Reformation view that the Roman Papacy is the Antichrist (adapted from Original Covenanter and Contending Witness magazine).

This books shows how and why "the Reformers denominated the papacy as Antichrist." Some quotes from the writings of Calvin and Luther appear here in English for the first time. Regarding the Protestant testimony set forth herein Paisley has stated,

the preaching of the Great Cloud of Witnesses of all ages in the Church is true... that the little horn is none other than the Dynasty of Rome's Popes and that therefore THE POPE IS THE ANTICHRIST.

This view (the "continuous historical Protestant theory") stands in agreement with Luther, Calvin, Knox, the Westminster Divines, Owen, Ames, Spurgeon, Baxter, Matthew Henry, Jonathan Edwards, Cunningham, Ryle, Cotton, Brown, and virtually all of the other standard Protestant interpreters of the book of Revelation.

Lee provides several pages of useful references on this topic in the various Protestant Confessions of Faith. He points out how the Westminster Confession and the Preamble to the Decrees of Dordt 1618-19 both clearly denominate the Papacy as the antichrist. He concludes his book with a useful chapter summarizing the contents (British Reformed Journal, April, 1993).

Have you fallen for a Jesuit ruse or are you standing in the footsteps of the flock? Read this book and find out.

Resource 13. FLEMING, ROBERT

The First Principles of Apocalyptical Interpretation (1848)

A short defense of the historicist postmillennial position, which was held by almost all of the Reformers. This is the postscript, excerpted from Fleming's complete treatise The Rise and Fall of the Papacy below.

Resource 14. FLEMING, ROBERT

The Rise and Fall of the Papacy (1848)

"Originally published in 1701. The first of these discourses has been the most celebrated. It arrested public notice, and awakened the interest of Europe. After laying down the principle upon which the author conceived the Apocalypse should be interpreted, he explained the pouring out of the fourth vial with reference to Anti-Christian France, fixing 1794 as the date of the expiration of the vial. When the French Revolution took place it was then remembered that it had been so predicted by a forgotten Scottish pastor. The work was reprinted both in England and America, translated into different languages, and once more fell out of sight till the revolution of 1848 led to a fresh perusal. Referring to Italy, the author wrote: 'The Fifth vial, which is to be poured out upon the seat of the Beast will probably begin about 1794 and expire about the year 1848.' The downfall of the Papacy, according to Fleming, is going on; the Mohammedan Antichrist will follow, and about A.D. 2000 (Jewish reckoning, about 2017 on the Julian calendar--RB), the millennial epoch will begin. In that memorable year (1848) the Pope was compelled to become a fugitive from Rome; and it was certainly a striking coincidence" (Johnston, The Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, 371). "A reprint," wrote The Patriot, "of one of the most remarkable and sagacious works extant on the subject of unfulfilled prophecy, deserving a perusal as a succinct, learned, and eminently devout exposition of the Apocalypse." Reprinted without abridgement from the 1701 edition. 143 pages.

The Apostasy of the Latter Times (1641, 1845 edition)

The title continues: "In which, (according to divine prediction) the world should wonder after the Beast, the Mystery of Iniquity should so far prevail over the Mystery of Godliness, whorish Babylon over the virgin-Church of Christ; as that the visible glory of the True Church should be much clouded, the True unstained Christian Faith corrupted, the purity of true worship polluted. 4:1,2,3."

343 pages.

Resource 16. MURRAY, MATTHEW

The Millennium: Peace, Prosperity and National Covenanting (1879)

This is the Reformation (especially second Reformation) view of postmillennialism as set forth and explained in terms of the national blessings and gospel purity that will be present when the millennium arrives.

Some items discussed include:

1. The visible state of unity in the church during the millennium

2. National covenanting.

3. How kings will be "nursing fathers" (Isa. 49:23) to the church during this blessed period of history.

4. How "all nations shall serve him" (Ps 72:11) in that day (and there are no nations in heaven -- so this must be speaking of what will take place on earth before Christ returns, contrary to amillennialism)!

In short, the millennium will be marked by visible civil and ecclesiastical obedience to Christ as King! This is exactly the opposite of the situation that we are presently experiencing -- for we live in the days of the great apostasy (2 Thes. 2:3). The church (visible) is in disarray and has grievously backslidden from her previous Reformation attainments. No nation is covenanted with Christ (as a nation), but instead,

"The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us" (Ps. 2:2-3).

The nations and many churches despise Christ's royal law and He now "vex(es) them in his sore displeasure" -- but when the millennial glory arrives the river of His Spirit will fill the earth (Ezek 47:1-12) and His high priestly prayer will be answered (John 17:21: "That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.").

This is a greatly encouraging introduction to this topic and the best short treatment of this subject that we offer! Excerpted from the Original Covenanter and Contending Witness magazine (volumes 2:4-6).

Resource 17.

Furthermore, he states that,

avoiding the theories of Rationalists and Roman Catholics on the one hand, and of the Adventists (Premillennialists--RB) on the other, the plan of interpretation which we have pursued is the same which has been held by the great body of evangelical ministers and Christians in America and in England for the last hundred years.

Pond aims to open Revelation to all Christians, but also deals with some controversial points in chapters which deal with the dating of Revelation and a review of Moses Stuart's Preterism. 248 pages.

Romanism and the Reformation from the Standpoint of Prophecy (1891)

Few today understand the importance of eschatology to the Reformation. The Jesuits long ago succeeded in burying Reformation historicism under the rubbish pile of their upstart theories of preterism and futurism -- and the popish beast loves it to be so.

Resource 21. STEELE, DAVID

The Two Witnesses: Their Cause, Number, Character, Furniture and Special Work (1859)

This is a great companion volume to Steele's Notes on the Apocalypse.

As is usually the case with Steele, he makes the doctrines of Scripture eminently practical. For example, note how the faithful witnesses are continually called to testify against open opposition to the Lord's Covenanted Zion and the attainments of biblical Reformation (in "the faith which was once delivered unto the saints"); and against whom this testimony is directed:

(T)hese witnesses are called and commissioned to testify especially against Antichrist -- a false christ, and therefore an opposing christ. But Christ is to be considered either personally or mystically; either abstractly in his personal rights and prerogatives, or in the concrete, in the rights and immunities of his church. There is this prejudice, too prevalent, against Christians testifying against Christians! This we are often told, is contrary to the law of charity. We have not so learned Christ. They are not all Israel which are of Israel. Much of the business of these two prophets is to oppose prophets -- to prophesy against the shepherds, Ezek. 34:2. Moses with his miracles must confront the magicians with their enchantments, Exod. 8:19. Elijah must confront the prophets of Baal, 1 Kings 18:25. Paul must counteract false apostles, 2 Cor. 11:13. In short, the direct object of these witnesses' testimony is apostate christendom -- those who depart from the faith, 1 Tim. 4:1 -- who have gone out from fellowship and renounced the doctrines of the apostolic church, 1 John 2:19. Their special work is to testify against error and its propagators and abettors, together with ungodliness, the natural fruit of error, rather than against pagans. (The Two Witnesses, p. 14).

(T)hese two witnesses have always testified -- not formally against pagans or infidels as such; but -- against apostate Christians, as composing an organized and complex system of opposition to the Lord and his Anointed. And just here, the witnesses have detected the secret of Antichrist's successful enterprise among the human family..."Many false prophets are gone out into the world... this is a deceiver and an Antichrist," 2 John 7. The combination is ostensibly on the side and in the interest of Christ, and the elements of which Antichrist is composed were obviously professing Christians, "They went out from us, but they were not of us, for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us, " I John 2:19. Here is the apostasy, and so the witnesses are fully borne out in asserting that Antichrist is a great Christian apostasy! To trace the origin and development, in the organization and modifications of this enemy of all righteousness, is the special work of Christ's witnesses. (The Two Witnesses, pp. 17-18).

Moreover, having taken his own place "in the wilderness" (i.e. having separated himself from, and having been ostracized by the "civilization" of the obstinately defecting RPCNA and other unfaithful denominations of his day [2 Thes. 3:6;14-15; Rev. 12:6; 17:3]), it was given to Steele to see and expound those grand old principles of our covenanted forefathers (who sat at Westminster and in the best Reformed churches during both the first and second Reformations -- the Scottish Presbyterians being granted the greatest measure of light as a settled body from 1638-1649). Thus, if you are interested in Reformation eschatology, with some of the strongest possible application, individually and corporately (in keeping with the body of Reformed truth), it is unlikely that you will find a better introduction to these topics than this!

As an additional bonus we have added Steele's 19 page debate with James M. Willson (a prominent RPCNA minister) to this book (along with a number of other pertinent documents). Since Steele references this theological clash in his preface to the Two Witnesses this makes a fitting appendix to add to this work.

We hope that you obtain and study this fine work -- and that you will find it edifying, as well as a useful weapon in your battle with the beasts of Revelation. 101 pages.

The Papacy is the Antichrist (1888)

"The following demonstration is rested on no narrow basis. Its two postulates, like two posterns, admit us into the edifice, but they are not its foundations. The whole economy of Redemption, and the whole course of History are the broad substructions on which the argument is based and built up; and the author humbly submits that it cannot be overturned, or the conclusion arrived at set aside, without dislocating and shaking the structure of both Revelation and Providence. The same line of proof which establishes that Christ is the promised Messiah, conversely applied, establishes that the Roman system is the predicted Apostasy. In the life of Christ we behold the converse of what the Antichrist must be; and in the prophecy of the Antichrist we are shown the converse of what Christ must be, and was. And when we place the Papacy between the two, and compare it with each, we find, on the one hand, that it is the perfect converse of Christ as seen in His life; and, on the other, that it is the perfect image of the Antichrist, as shown in the prophecy of him. We conclude, therefore, that if Jesus of Nazareth be the Christ, the Roman Papacy is the Antichrist" (Wylie's preface, pp. v-vi). This book contains the classic teaching of the Protestant Reformation regarding Antichrist (an integral part of that Reformation, we might add -- as all the Reformed creeds and confessions attest). The easy-reading format and style make this book an ideal introduction to this topic. For more detailed research on the Papacy, by the same author, see Wylie's The Papacy: Its History, Dogmas, Genius, and Prospects (below); which in its day won first prize from the Evangelical Alliance for essays on Popery. 176 pages.

The Papacy: Its History, Dogmas, Genius, and Prospects (1889 edition)

In its day, this book, of 572 pages, won the Evangelical Alliance first prize for an essay on Popery. "With all we have read of Popery, we have yet met with nothing in the English language which we regard to be so complete in itself, and so overwhelmingly destructive to Romanism," noted the Evangelical magazine. (Evangelical magazines of Wylie's day obviously knew who their enemies were then; there are few that recognize this today. Some, in our day, even teach that a return to Rome is advisable, thinking that an alliance with idolaters will help free the land of social evils. In reality this will only serve as a further provocation against "the Holy one of Israel," bringing more curses, wrath and guilt upon our land.). Wylie's book combines the qualities of clear structure, vigorous logic, and eloquent style and yet is written with an absence of unchristian passion and prejudice -- making its argument all the more useful to those trapped in Rome's web of deceit (or those seeking a fair and comprehensive treatment of this massive topic). It is also indexed. When this book first appeared in German, the Papists were careful to give it the "silent treatment," lest an inquiring Papist should hear of it and be inclined to read it. These same Romanists (later) also invoked the civil power against it, so fearful were they of its contents.

The Two Sons of Oil; or, the Faithful Witness for Magistracy and Ministry upon a Scriptural Basis (1850, third edition)

A Covenanter classic opening Revelation 11:3-4 and Zechariah 4:14. It has been hailed as the "best presentation of the position of the Covenanter Church that has been written." Noting that the "[t]ime has been, when the whole body of Presbyterians, in Scotland, England, and Ireland, unanimously subscribed" to these principles, "[f]or civil and ecclesiastical reformation" and that thousands bled and died for the glorious covenanted cause of civil and ecclesiastical reformation; Wylie sets out to explain and defend "that cause. Not because it is an ancient cause; not because many have sealed it with their blood; but, because," as he says, "I thought it the doctrine of the Bible, and the cause of Christ."

This book explains how to tell if a government (especially a civil government) is faithful to Christ and thus to be obeyed for conscience's sake. It also gives direction regarding when and how to resist (and disassociate) yourself from governments which get their power from "the beast."

Moreover, it gives clear testimony as to what the Bible requires of civil magistrates, noting "that civil rulers should exercise their power in protecting and defending the religion of Jesus." It also gives plain reasons why dissent from the government of the United States (and other covenant breaking nations) is the legitimate Scriptural pattern. All these ideas are intricately intertwined with the Reformation understanding of eschatology and demonstrate once again the importance of a proper understanding of the Reformation eschatology of Scripture. 99 pages.

Resource 25.

It is also interesting to note that Brown could read and translate in 10 different languages, being entirely self-taught, though his language studies "were subordinate to his favourite study of divinity, in which he became eminently skilled, as well as in history, both ecclesiastical and civil" (Darling, Cyclopaedia Bibliographica, p. 451). 411 pages.

Resource 27. FAIRBAIRN, PATRICK

The Interpretation of Prophecy

This is Fairbairn's best-known work. Like all his writings it is characterized by a deep familiarity with the text and language of Scripture, careful and thoroughly-researched scholarship, and a sane and balanced approach to exegesis. Here we have "the mature reflections of a lifetime of devoted scholarly study of the subject of prophecy.

Part one deals with the principles of interpretation.

Part two applies these principles to matters related to the kingdom of Christ (and its victory), Antichrist and the beast (and their doom), the millennium, the mystery of iniquity, and much more.

If you want to know, from a practical standpoint, why in our day so-called Protestants are signing compromising agreements with Roman Catholics, why there is so much disunity and defection in the church, why age old Confessional standards are being abandoned, and why their is general turmoil all about, this book will certainly help to give you the clear and sobering answer.

Resource 30. GILLESPIE, GEORGE

Ezekiel's Vision of Millennial Glory, Preparation for Coming Reformation and a Remedy for Backsliding and Lukewarmness (1644)

This sermon, read by elder Lyndon Dohms (1998), was originally preached to England's House of Commons "At Their Late Solemn Fast, Wednesday, March 27, 1644." It is taken from volume one of Gillespie's two volume Works ($24.98 P, $34.00 HP). It gives great insight into the covenanted unity, uniformity and worldwide Reformation sought by the majority of the Westminster Divines and the best of the civil leaders of Gillespie's day.

Gillespie searchingly deals with the individual, the church and the state, while painting a Scriptural picture of prophesied earthly victory (Isa. 2:2-5, Ezek 47:1-12, etc.) -- in classic historicist postmillennial style -- which is sure to stir even the coldest Christian heart. He shows how the worst disease the land can suffer is corruption in religion (particularly as exhibited in false worship), rebukes those opposing the Solemn League and Covenant and calls upon all to maintain (and even improve upon) the Reformation attainments "whereunto we have already attained" (Phil. 3:16).

It is also interesting to note, especially since this sermon was preached before civil rulers, that though Gillespie points out the need for humility, repentance, prayer, tears, godly affections, sanctified minds and honorable actions, he does not forget to mention the importance of a covenanted army in this great cause of Christ's covenanted Reformation. Also noted is the destruction of Antichrist, the calling and conversion of the Jews (Rom. 11), the two witnesses and the 1260 year apostasy. Gillespie closes with an appeal to the English House of Commons, with whom the Scots had "joined in covenant and in arms," to be faithful "according to the word he (God--RB) hath covenanted with you (i.e. in the Solemn League and Covenant--RB), so his spirit remaineth among you" -- exhorting these magistrates to "fear not" but to "be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might." This is classic Covenanter preaching, among the best sermons you may ever hear!

Reformation's Refining Fire; or, Iconoclastic Zeal Necessary to World Reformation (1645)

This sermon, read by elder Lyndon Dohms, was originally preached to the House of Lords in the abbey church at Westminster during the days of the Westminster Assembly (on August 27, 1645). It deals with Malachi 3:2 and can also be found in volume one of Gillespie's Works. The reading is approximately 80 minutes in length and for content this is likely the best sermon that we have ever carried.

The glory of Christ is magnified in a soul stirring manner and at a level which is seldom (if ever) reached in our day. Though preaching before some of the most powerful men of his day, Gillespie does nothing to shave off the sharp edges of the whole counsel of God. He makes it abundantly clear that spiritual Reformation (individual, ecclesiastical and civil) is like a flaming fire which burns the dross of the flesh and is often hated and opposed by those that cry loudest for "Reform."

On the other hand, the refining fire of Reformation which pleases God (and comes from His fatherly hands, filled with mercy, love and grace), not only turns his wrath from the nations (by granting the grace to remove the causes of His wrath), but invigorates the spirit with that iconoclastic zeal against sin (whether personal or corporate) that can only be produced by His sovereign power.

Whole-hearted (covenanted) reformation is contrasted, throughout this sermon, with the half-hearted comfortable Christianity that has been common in most ages. Gillespie wields the sword of Scripture as few can in driving home a multitude of vitally important points. This sermon can be listened to over and over with increasing profit, as it contains a fullness which is almost impossible to absorb in just one sitting. Don't miss this one; it is a real gem!

The Works of George Gillespie

(2 volumes)

Gillespie was one of the Scottish commissioners to the Westminster Assembly. He was one of the greatest theologians of all time -- almost singlehandedly steering this august Assembly at certain points. As Hetherington notes, "in all those debates no person took a more active part, or gained more distinction than George Gillespie," though he was the youngest man there. Furthermore, Hetherington calls him a "genius of the highest order," and writes that his work "dazzled and astonished his countrymen." He "held an undisputed position among the foremost of the distinguished men by whose talents and energy the Church of Scotland was delivered from the prelatic despotism" of that day.

This rare work contains Gillespie's personal notes during the Westminster Assembly and A Dispute Against English Popish Ceremonies. A Dispute Against English Popish Ceremonies is a rare classic on Reformed worship, taking on all the arguments related to the use of man-made ceremonies in worship. Burned by the Prelates (Episcopalians) just after it first appeared in 1637, this masterful defense of the regulative principle has yet to be answered (by those that oppose God's sovereignty in worship). It ably, and in a detailed manner, refutes the old errors of Prelacy and Romanism in worship -- many of which are being resurrected in our day by writers like James Jordan, Steve Schlissel and John Frame (and others abandoning historic Presbyterian [i.e. Biblical] worship).

Gillespie's practical "Treatise of Miscellany Questions," contains 22 chapters. Topics dealt with range from: whether prophets and prophesying continued beyond the primitive church (which Gillespie answers in the affirmative); whether a sound heart and an unsound head can consist together; what are heresies and what is their purpose; are infants to be baptized; should the civil government attach a negative sanction to not swearing to the Solemn League and Covenant (against one aspect of Theonomy); etc. These Works also contains a memoir of Gillespie's life and writings, written by Hetherington, Gillespie's sermons before the house of commons, and much more!

Resource 33. GOUGE, WILLIAM

The Progress of Divine Providence (2 cassettes, 1645, 1998)

Gouge was one of the many English Covenanters who swore the Solemn League and Covenant. He also sat in the Westminster Assembly. This sermon (read by Lyndon Dohms) was preached in the days of the sitting of this Assembly (Sept. 24, 1645), before the House of Peers assembled in the English Parliament, during a public fast. It is also available in printed form ($5.98 P, $15.00 HP).

Here Gouge encourages the civil rulers in their duty as nursing fathers (Isa. 49:23) to the church -- in furthering the covenanted Reformation of his day. Much attention is also paid to Reformation eschatology as it is witnessed in the unfolding of history according to God's decree. Gouge offers great encouragement to Christians living in evil times, as he points to the day when "the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea" (Hab. 2:14); demonstrating throughout how the gospel continues to march forward to triumph over the forces of darkness -- with special attention to the manner in which God was using the second Reformation to crush both the civil and ecclesiastical beasts of Revelation.

Gouge was a postmillennialist and historicist, and he defends this position from Scripture (and history) throughout this sermon. This is a good example of the type of preaching that fueled the Puritan revolution in the British Isles in the mid-seventeenth century.

The Great Red Dragon; Or the Master-Key to Popery (1854)

Gavin was "formerly one of the Roman Catholic priests of Saragossa, Spain." This book was first published in 1724, and tells of Gavin's experiences in the late 1600s and early 1700s. In the preface Gavin notes that he feared for his life upon the publication of the book, as "the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus" (Rev. 17:6) continued to fill her ordained role in history, as a persecuting menace to the witnesses for God's truth. This book contains a detail exhibition of the harlotries of Rome -- from a former insider -- as well as much information that is no longer readily available on the wickedness of the man of sin "Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. Resource 35. HISLOP, ALEXANDER

The Two Babylons or the Papal Worship Proved to Be the Worship of Nimrod and His Wife (1916)

Contrasts the distinctive characteristics of the truth with the lies and idolatry of the Roman antichrist. Chapters cover the "Objects of Worship," "Festivals," "Doctrine and Discipline," "Rites and Ceremonies," "Religious Orders," and the development of the two systems considered "Historically and Prophetically." The prophetic section is especially interesting and shows how far Protestants have moved into Rome's camp concerning eschatology. The whole book, in fact, shows in a most explicit manner how much Romanism has infected the modern Protestant churches and their thinking. And as Hislop notes,

it has been known all along that Popery was baptised Paganism; but God is now making it manifest, that the Paganism which Rome has baptised is, in all its essential elements, the very Paganism which prevailed in the ancient literal Babylon, when Jehovah opened before Cyrus the two-leaved gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron."

A welcome rebuke to those who would offer the right hand of fellowship to the "beast from the sea." 330 pages.

Resource 37. BROWN, DAVID

Christ's Second Coming: Will It Be Premillennial? (1882, 1990)

One of the most devastating books ever written against premillennialism.

Ken Gentry says of it,

As The New Schaff-Herzog Religious Encyclopedia observed, this work is widely regarded "a classic." And classics, especially evangelical classics, well deserve a new hearing by a new generation of Christians... The present work is Brown's postmillennial argument against premillennialism (which he once endorsed). In Part One of the work he presents a devastating nine fold argument, organized around nine propositions, against the premillennial system as it was presented in the early and mid-1800's. In Part Two he presents a postmillennial view of the spirituality of the millennium against the backdrop of the carnal, political millennium of premillennialism. In the final Part of the book he considers seven of the leading objections to his views and very capably responds to them... Having read it I wondered how premillennialism survived its penetrating analysis... Consequently, I am delighted at the republication of this classic, especially this particular edition, which is a later one than that published by Baker Book House in 1983. It should be noted that Brown's work went through several editions during his lifetime... The republication of this work is particularly important today... I commend Reg Barrow and Still Waters Revival Books for offering this edition of David Brown's Christ's Second Coming: Will It Be Premillennial? May the Lord of Glory be pleased to give a renewed vision to his Church of a conquering Christ, Who is both Savior and Lord!

Credenda Agenda (No. 7, vol. 5), in their review of this title noted, "Brown is not a preterist. For this reason, convinced Preterists should read him... this nineteenth-century reprint is a welcome classic."

Resource 38. BROWN, DAVID

(Contemporary introductions by Reg Barrow & Steve Schlissel)

Hal Lindsey and the Restoration of the Jews (1861, 1990)

And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins. As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes. For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance (Romans 11:26-29).

O to see the sight, next to Christ's coming in the clouds, the most joyful! Our elder brethren the Jews and Christ fall upon one another; they will be kind to one another when they meet. O day! O longed for and lovely day-dawn! O sweet Jesus, let me see that sight which will be as life from the dead, thee and thy ancient people in mutual embraces (Samuel Rutherford, Letters, 1635).

This book echoes Rutherford's biblical sentiment throughout. It includes a short testimony by Reg Barrow describing his rejection of dispensationalism as a young Christian and noting why he brought this book into print.

A 44 page preface (by Schlissel) recounts the historic Reformed position concerning Israel (which was written before Schlissel himself rejected the historic Reformed view of worship) -- citing many quotations (like Rutherford's above) in exposing Hal Lindsey's outrageous inaccuracies and gross misrepresentations of the Reformation position (regarding the restoration of the Jews).

Finally, the bulk of the book consists of David Brown's classic work focusing on Romans 11, The Restoration of the Jews (1861). 97). In short, this book demonstrates that Scripture teaches (and the best Reformation theologians concur) that the future will be most glorious for the Jews -- when they, as a people, are draw by God's irresistible grace to the Lord Jesus Christ. 200 pages.

Nation Shaking Reformation Promoted

A classic sermon by a modern-day Puritan! Deals with the major facets of national Reformation from the Old and New Testaments, as well as providing historic examples of how and why God blesses this biblical pattern. Explains the duties of the church, state and individual in bringing about national covenanted Reformation. Includes notes on the importance of covenanting with God (individually and corporately) and on the forthcoming covenant renewal (of the Solemn League and Covenant) in Edmonton. Exposes tolerationism and religious pluralism as sin, gives instruction on the "two sons of oil" in Zechariah's prophecy, and provides direction (from the Lord's prayer as expounded by the Westminster Divines in the Larger Catechism) on the kind of prayer that changes the world, destroys the work of the devil, and honors and glorifies God. Reformation eschatology also gets its due here. This sermon should be a great encouragement to those that have been given the grace to see the bigger picture regarding what God is doing in the world today -- and the certain world-changing Reformation that is to come during the prophesied millennium!

Its very merits are probably, in part, the reason why no other work on the same subject has appeared, and until it is supplanted by a better work -- an event not likely soon to occur -- it will have a value peculiar to itself."

Chapters include "The Necessity of the Mediatorial Dominion," "The Universality of the Mediatorial Dominion," "The Mediatorial Dominion Over the Church," and "Over the Nations," plus much more.

In short, this is a unique book devoted to the absolute Kingship and dominion of the Lord Jesus Christ -- over all heaven and earth! And He will continue His present reign from heaven until every enemy of His is conquered, "For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet" (1 Cor. 15:25). 360 pages.

Resource 43. WILLSON, JAMES R.

Prince Messiah's Claims to Dominion Over All Governments: and the Disregard of His Authority by the United States in the Federal Constitution (1832)

The reality of Christ's kingship explored and vindicated from Scripture, with application to the United States constitution. The author's conclusions have far-reaching consequences and should be looked at seriously by all Christians, whether they reside in the United States or not (for the biblical principles enumerated here also apply to other nations). We, today, are seeing the desolation of kingdoms worldwide (through wars, famines, disease, unjust taxation, immorality, etc.) by the wrath of the Lamb, much of which can be attributed to national ignorance of this doctrine. "Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath be kindled but a little" (Psalm 2:12). This book will go a long way to exposing the fact, as Willson writes, that "ungodly men have occupied, and do now occupy, many of the official stations, in the government," and that "Tyrants are yet on their thrones, and unholy republics refuse to acknowledge Him (Christ--RB) as Lord of all." 48 pages.

Resource 44. WILLSON, JAMES R.

The Subjection of Kings and Nations to Messiah (1820)

A lengthy sermon of 64 pages preached Dec. 6, 1819. Based on the text: "All Kings shall bow down before him: all nations shall serve him" (Ps. 72:11). Maintains that this text refers to a commanded duty, concerning Christ not Solomon, and should be translated "Let all kings bow down before him: Let all nations serve him." Explains this national duty, enquires as to how it is to be nationally preformed, then proceeds to make practical application of the subject. Shows that nations have a duty, as nations, to bind themselves to Christ by covenant, to consecrate themselves to Him, to swear allegiance to Him (as their King and Lord), and to obey all His holy law! Furthermore, Willson maintains that it is a great sin for nations to remain in rebellion against Christ by not performing these duties. He also demonstrates how and why a high-handed sin of this nature brings corporate guilt upon the nation. Moreover, this sin provokes God to wrath (as seen in an escalation of national calamities), until the day, barring repentance, that the national "cup of wrath" overflows. Also contains helpful direction regarding the individual's social responsibility as a Christian in times of national corporate defection from Christ's crown and covenant (i.e in times exactly like those that we live in).
