The title continues (providing a nice summary for this rare valuable work): "Or, A Survey of our Saviour in His Soul-Suffering, His Loveliness in his Death, and the Efficacy thereof. In Which Some Cases of Soul-trouble in weak Believers, Grounds of Submission under the Absence of Christ, with the Flowings and Heightenings of free Grace, are opened. Delivered in Sermons on the Gospel according to John, Chap. xii. ver. 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33. Where are also interjected some necessary Digressions, for the Times, touching divers Errors of Antinomians; and a short Vindication of the Doctrine of Protestants, from the Arminian pretended Universality of Christ's Dying for All and every One of Mankind; the moral and feigned Way of irresistable Conversion of Sinners; and what Faith is required of all within the visible Church, for the Want whereof, many are condemned." The Dictionary of Scottish Church History and Theology says of this work, "Rutherford's writings during the London years provide a significant commentary of the theology of the Westminster Confession and Catechisms. In Christ Dying and Drawing Sinners to Himself Rutherford elaborately scrutinizes the Antinomian notion that the law has no obligation for the Christian" (p. 736). This book contains an extensive index, is 760 pages in length and is an excellent example of sound and faithful Covenanter preaching, balancing both faith (doctrine) and manners (practice). A exceedingly rare Covenanter classic! These are deep waters and this title is recommended for those who have already developed some fair strength in swimming the strong theological currents of the second Reformation. Containing some of Rutherford's most mature thought, this book was published six years before Rutherford passed on to glory. Over 350 pages.

The Six Books of Erastus Against Excommunication are Examined; with a Vindication of the Eminent Divine Theodore Beza Against the Aspersions of Erastus, The Arguments of Mr. William Pryn, Richard Hooker, Dr. Morton... and the Doctors of Aberdeen; Touching Will-Worship, Ceremonies, Imagery, Idolatry, Things Indifferent, An Ambulatory Government; The Due and Just Power of the Magistrate in Matters of Religion, and the Arguments of Mr. Pryn, in so Far as they Side with Erastus, are Moderately Discussed.

Over 750 pages which Walker says "contains the amplest exposition and vindication of our old ecclesiastical principles." Rutherfurd here gives a classic defense of Presbyterianism, touching on both church government and "the due and just power of the Magistrate in matters of Religion." Regarding worship, he touches on imagery, idolatry, things indifferent, ceremonies and will worship. Sherman Isbell describes this book as follows: "Rutherford asserts that there is delineated in the NT a form of Church government by elders and Presbyteries which is of permanent obligation; more-over, that discipline and suspension from the sacraments are vested with church officers rather than with the Christian civil magistrate. The book also expounds the Westminster Assembly's principle that the mode of acceptable worship is regulated by the will of Christ as king speaking in the Scriptures; the Church is not at liberty to alter or invent anything in worship or government which goes beyond the pattern in God's Word. Rutherford's writings during the London years provide a significant commentary on the theology of the Westminster Confession and Catechisms" (Dictionary of Scottish Church History and Theology, pp. 735-36). Innes notes that Rutherford had "no hesitation in including among matters of faith -- first, fundamental points; second, superstructions built upon the fundamentals; third, circa fundamentalia, things about matters of faith;" making this an important look at the teaching surrounding the Scottish view of the visible church, close communion, etc. An exceedingly rare gem by this celebrated Presbyterian divine and Scottish commissioner to the famous Westminster Assembly.

The Due Right of Presbyteries or a Peaceable Plea for the Government of the Church of Scotland... (1644)

Almost 800 pages long, Rutherfurd here deals with church membership, separation from the visible church, the civil magistrate and religion, communion among churches, the errors of the independents (specifically in New England) and much more. This could be considered the Lex Rex of church government -- another exceedingly rare masterpiece of Presbyterianism! Characterized by Walker as sweeping "over a wider field than most. Most essential points which Gillespie has barely touched, Rutherfurd carefully considers; as, for instance, the nature of the visible church as such, and its constituent elements. Even in the Erastian controversy he is a necessary supplement to his great contemporary. It is something to me altogether amazing, the mass of thinking about Church questions you have in those writings." Bannerman, in his Church of Christ calls this a "very learned and elaborate treatise." Here is a sample of Mr. Rutherford's writing: "A private subtraction and separation from the Ministry of a known wolf and seducer,... this the Law of nature will warrant... as Parker saith from Saravia, 'it is lawful to use that blameless and just defence, if the bad church-guide cannot be deposed.' So the son may save himself by a just defence in fleeing from his mad father, or his distracted friend coming to kill him. Now this defence is not an authoritative act, nor [a] judicial act of authority, but a natural act that is common to any private person, yea to all without the true Church as well as within to take that care in extreme necessity, for the safety of their souls, that they would do for the safety of their bodies" (1642, cited in The Original Covenanter and Contending Witness magazine [www.covenanter.org]).

The Excellence and Worth of the Gospel (c. 1640)

This sermon is read by elder Lyndon Dohms (1998) and taken from the book Quaint Sermons of Samuel Rutherford (see below). It proclaims the power of the gospel for pulling down all strongholds raised against it. It exhibits God's sovereignty while blasting the Arminian heresy and toppling its vaunted idol of "free will." It demonstrates how the gospel is a love letter from God to His elect and how the Lord's arrows always hit their mark (particular redemption, irresistible grace, etc.). Rutherford also delineates the marks by which one can be assured that a work of grace has been begun in the heart by God. Hypocrisy is also exposed in the most pointed manner. The place of the law and the gospel in salvation are given. True repentance is contrasted with false repentance, as is true assurance with false assurance, plus much more. A very practical sermon from one of the greatest preachers and theologians of all time, exhibiting why Rutherford is considered a protesting Covenanter of the first rank.

Exercitationes Apologeticae Pro Divina Gratia... Adversus Jacobum Arminium ejusque asseclas, & Jesuitas... (1636, 1651 edition)

In English this title reads "Apologetical exercises on behalf of divine grace, against James Arminius and his followers, and the Jesuits" (as translated by Thomas Roche). "An elaborate treatise against Arminianism. It provoked the hostility of Sydserf, Bishop of Galloway, who summoned the author before the High Commission Court. Rutherford was banished to Aberdeen, the stronghold of prelacy, where he wrote his Letters (see below for this title), and carried on a discussion with the Aberdeen doctors, overmatching them on all points of the controversy. The book established his fame, and brought him back from Antwoth, (whither he had ventured after the overthrow of Prelacy), to the chair of divinity in St. Andrews" (Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 308. NOTE: This book is written entirely in LATIN. 545 pages.

A Free Disputation Against Pretended Liberty of Conscience (1649 edition)

Rutherford's Free Disputation, though scarce, is still one of his most important works -- with maybe only a few copies of the actual book left in existence. Though Rutherford is affectionately remembered in our day for his Letters, or for laying the foundations of constitutional government (against the divine right of kings) in his unsurpassed Lex Rex, his Free Disputation should not be overlooked -- for it contains the same searing insights as Lex, Rex. In fact, this book should probably be known as Rutherford's "politically incorrect" companion volume to Lex, Rex. A sort of sequel aimed at driving pluralists and antinomians insane. Written against "the Belgick Arminians, Socinians, and other Authors contending for lawlesse liberty, or licentious Tolerations of Sects and Heresies,"

Rutherford explains the undiluted Biblical solution to moral relativism, especially as it is expressed in ecclesiastical and civil pluralism! (Corporate pluralism being a violation of the first commandment and an affront to the holy God of Scripture). He also deals with conscience, toleration, penology (punishment), and the judicial laws, as related to both the civil and ecclesiastical realms. Excellent sections are also included which address questions related to determining the fundamentals of religion, how covenants bind us, the perpetual obligation of social covenants (with direct application to the Solemn League and Covenant and the covenant-breaking of Cromwell and his sectarian supporters), whether the punishing of seducing teachers be persecution of conscience, and much more.

Walker adds these comments and context regarding Rutherford's Free Disputation,

"The principle of toleration was beginning to be broached in England, and in a modified shape to find acceptance there. Samuel Rutherford was alarmed, or rather, I should say, he was horrified, for he neither feared the face of man or argument. He rushed to the rescue of the good old view... It is not so easy to find a theoretical ground for toleration; and Rutherford has many plausible things to say against it. With the most perfect confidence, he argues that it is alike against Scripture and common sense that you should have two religions side by side. It is outrageous ecclesiastically, it is sinful civilly. He does not, however, take what I call the essentially persecuting ground. He does not hold that the magistrate is to punish religion as religion. Nay, he strongly maintains that the civil magistrate never aims at the conscience. The magistrate, he urges, does not send anyone, whether a heretic (who is a soul murderer--RB) or a murderer, to the scaffold with the idea of producing conversion or other spiritual result, but to strengthen the foundations of civil order. But if he gives so much power to the king, he is no lover of despotism withal: the king himself must be under law. To vindicate this great doc--rine is the object of another book, the celebrated Lex, Rex; of which it has been said by one competent to judge, that it first clearly developed the constitutionalism which all men now accept" (Theology and Theologians..., pp. 11-12).

In our day Francis Schaeffer, and numerous others, have critiqued many of the problems found in modern society, but most have spent little time developing explicitly Biblical solutions -- especially regarding the theoretical foundations that Rutherford addresses here. Rutherford's Free Disputation provides a detailed blueprint for laying the foundations for Reformation (in all areas of life) that must be laid before any lasting, God-honoring solutions will be found. Furthermore, Rutherford and his writings were the enemies of all governments not covenanted with Christ. This book will give you a very clear picture as to why "the beast" (civil and ecclesiastical) has reserved his special hatred for such teaching. As Samuel Wylie noted,

"[t]he dispute, then, will not turn upon the point whether religion should be civilly established... but it is concerning what religion ought to be civilly established and protected, -- whether the religion of Jesus alone should be countenanced by civil authority, or every blasphemous, heretical, and idolatrous abomination which the subtle malignity of the old serpent and a heart deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, can frame and devise, should be put on an equal footing therewith" (Two Sons of Oil: or, The Faithful Witness For Magistracy and Ministry Upon a Scriptural Basis, softcover).

Can our generation swallow Rutherford's hard, anti-pluralistic, Covenanter medicine, poured forth from the bottle of the first commandment, without choking on their carnal dreams of a free and righteous society divorced from God (and His absolute claims upon everyone and everything)? Not without the enabling power of the Holy Spirit -- that is for sure! In summary, this book answers all the hardest questions theonomists (and their wisest and best opponents) have been asking for the last 20-30 years (and these answers are much more in depth than any we have seen in the last couple of millennia [less about a century to account for the apostles]). As the reader will discover, Rutherford was a wealthy man when it came to wisdom (and much advanced theologically), and those who take the time to gaze into the King's treasure house, as exhibited in this book, will find that they are greatly rewarded. Furthermore, because of its uncompromising stand upon the Word of God, this book is sure to be unpopular among a wicked and adulterous generation. However, on the other hand, it is sure to be popular among the covenanted servants of King Jesus!

This is one of the best books for advanced study of the Christian faith. We have now obtained an easy-to-read, amazingly clear copy of this very rare, old treasure. Great price too, considering that a copy of the 1649 edition, containing this quality of print, could cost upwards of $1000 on the rare book market -- though it is unlikely you would ever see a copy for sale! Over 450 pages.

Letters of Samuel Rutherford

Spurgeon said, "What a wealth of spiritual ravishment we have here! Rutherford is beyond all praise of men. Like a strong-winged eagle he soars into the highest heaven and with unblenched eye he looks into the mystery of love divine." Continuing, he comments, "let the world know that Spurgeon held Rutherford's Letters to be the nearest thing to inspiration which can be found in all the writings of men... none penetrated further into the innermost heart of holy fellowship with Jesus. Whenever we think of him we compare him to Milton's Uriel, the angel that stood in the sun itself."

Richard Baxter commented, "Hold off the Bible, such a book as Mr. Rutherford's Letters, the world never saw the like."

And Cecil notes, "It is one of my classics. Were truth the beam, I have no doubt that if Homer, and Virgil, and Horace, and all that the world has agreed to idolize, were weighed against that book, they would be lighter than vanity. He is a real original" (Remains cited in Johnston's The Treasury of the Scottish Covenant).

Walker adds his voice to this chorus of praise calling these, "letters which, I may say, stand all alone in religious literature... So far as I know, they are the only letters two centuries old (i.e. when Walker wrote this--RB) which are still a practical reality in the religious life of Scotland, England, and America. And criticism cannot get rid of the fact that they continue to retain their hold of human hearts, -- that they have won a place for themselves besides such books as Augustine's Confessions or Thomas a Kempis." (Theologians..., p. 8).

The body of this publication is from the 1891 edition of S.R.'s Letters. It contains Andrew Bonar's sketch of Rutherford's life and biographical notices of his correspondence, as well as the full compliment of Rutherford's letters. Furthermore, to make this the most complete edition of Rutherford's Letters ever published, we have added:

1. Robert M'Ward's original (1664) "Preface To the Christian Reader," of 45 pages (taken from a 1783 edition of Rutherford's Letters, which is easier to read, being in more modern type).

2. Rutherford's "Testimony to the Covenanted Work of Reformation, between 1638 and 1649."

3. Rutherford's "Dying Words, containing several Advices to some Ministers and near Relations" -- which further corroborates the large body of other evidence (cf. George Gillespie's dying testimony at the end of his Works, volume 2, for example) testifying to those glorious truths (of covenanted faithfulness to Christ and separation from malignants) that were foremost in the minds of the most prominent Covenanters, even moments before they eternally entered the presence of their Almighty Father.

4. A postscript from earlier editions of this work (thought to be written by M'Ward).

All the above sections, which we have added, have been left out of many former editions of Rutherford's Letters -- including the Banner of Truth hardcover that was in print a couple of years ago. This is the first time, to our knowledge, that these valuable additions (which were at various times published together with these letters) and the full edition of Ruthrford's Letters have all been gathered into one publication.

The importance of M'Ward's original preface can be seen when we consider who he was and the part he played in Rutherford's life and the Reformation of his day. M'Ward was a persecuted and exiled Protester (exiled for preaching, in 1661, "against the overturning of the Covenanted Reformation by Parliament," -- Dictionary of Scottish Church History & Theology, p. 538), who "collected and arranged the papers of his preceptor, Samuel Rutherford, and gave the world his (Rutherford's--RB) Letters." The Dictionary of Scottish Church History and Theology (pp. 537-38) further notes that McWard

"studied at St. Andrews where he was a favorite of Samuel Rutherford" and that "when Rutherford went to London as a Commissioner to the Westminster Assembly, McWard accompanied his as an amanuensis... was a zealous Protester... in 1661 he preached against an overturning of the Covenanted Reformation by Parliament, entering a protest in heaven that he desired to be free from the guilt thereof. He was imprisoned 'for sedition and treasonable preaching... he helped with the editing and publication of Rutherford's Examen Arminianismi (Utrecht, 1668)... wrote several tracts to encourage resistance to those whom he believed were usurpers of power in the Church of Scotland. He asserted that is was not, as then constituted, 'of the genus Church at all, -- that, by its mere physical force-raid on the real Church of Scotland, it has proved itself to be absolutely devoid of ecclesiastical rights.' ... such publications rendered McWard, with his close friend John Brown of Wamphray (who was also taught by Rutherford--RB), odious to the regime of Charles II, and diligent efforts were made to have him expelled from Holland... He continued zealous against the Indulgences, opposing the efforts of Robert Fleming, his successor, at conciliation (see Earnest Contendings for the Faith)... Wodrow characterized him as 'a person of great knowledge, zeal, learning, and remarkable ministerial abilities.'"

The original publication of Rutherford's Letters came just three years after Rutherford's death. M'Ward hoped to strengthen the hands of the persecuted Covenanters with the publication of his preface and the release of Rutherford's Letters. In his preface M'Ward sets forth the context (and theological genius) of not only S.R.'s letters, but also of the turbulent times that drew forth some of the greatest theological literature ever produced. Among these works we find the Westminster Standards, the "Solemn League and Covenant" and a large body of other Presbyterian/Covenanter/Puritan writings that have been handed down to posterity, from these very days. These men knew (as M'Ward demonstrates in his preface to Rutherford's Letters) that the covenanted cause of Christ would prosper, though it was suffering a great setback at this time. Additionally, though these covenanted Presbyterians were blessed with towering and sanctified intellectual abilities, they were no ivy tower theologians; each, to a man (almost), were more than willing to suffer and/or die for the covenanted cause of Christ. M'Ward's preface is an invaluable aid to understanding these men and their times. Furthermore, this is the only place that you can obtain a copy of this exceedingly rare and valuable piece of testimony to the covenanted Reformation, as our "rare bound photocopy editions" are the first reprintings of this preface in many years.

Additionally, it is very interesting to note that when these letters were first published in 1664 (note the date, just shortly after the great ejection), the book was titled Joshua Redivivus (i.e. revived--RB) or Mr. Rutherford's Letters Divided into Two Parts. The First, Containing those Which were Written from Aberdeen, Where He was Confined by a Sentence of the High Commission, Drawn Forth Against Him, Partly on the Account of His Declining them, Partly Upon the Account of His Non-conformity. The Second, Containing, Some Which were Written from Anworth, Before He was by the Prelates Persecution Thrust from His Ministry; and Others Upon Diverse Occasions Afterward from St. Andrews, London, etc. Now Published, for the Use of All the People of God; But More Particularly, for Those Who Now Are, or Afterward May Be Put to Suffering for Christ and His Cause; By a Well Wisher (Robert M'Ward--RB) to the Work of the People of God. These Scriptures followed the full title to further stress the point of this publication: "They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me" (John 16:2-3); and "And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost: So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia" (1 Thes. 1:6-7).

These letters were put out by Covenanters, for Covenanters, in defense of the Covenanted Reformation -- to strengthen the hands of the suffering covenanted servants (and martyrs) of Christ. M'Ward, who was banished to Holland (where he co-ministered with John Brown of Wamphray), specifically notes in his preface that his purpose in publishing the first edition of Rutherford's Letters (1664) was to bring comfort and encouragement to those 2000 ministers recently ejected for faithfulness to the Solemn League and Covenant. This was to be accomplished by setting forth Rutherford's example of faithfulness, courage and zeal, as seen throughout these letters, under similar circumstances of suffering. This book was also intended to minister to the myriads of faithful Covenanters who were at that time experiencing increasingly violent persecution and opposition.

Moreover, as Andrew Bonar notes in his prefatory "Sketch of Samuel Rutherford" (included in this edition) These letters will ever be precious to:

1. All who are sensible of their own, and the Church's decay and corruptions.

2. All who delight in the Surety's imputed righteousness.

3. All who rejoice in the Gospel of free grace.

4. All who seek to grow in holiness.

5. All afflicted persons.

6. All who love the Person of Christ.

7. All who love that blessed hope and the glorious appearing of the great God and Saviour.

Lex, Rex, or the Law and the Prince

Without a doubt one of the greatest books on political philosophy ever written. Rutherford's teaching, taken from Scripture, decimated the "divine right of kings" doctrine and set up Scripture as the standard by which to judge the actions, beliefs and constitutions of civil government. Picking up where Brutus, in A Defense of Liberty Against Tyrants (http://www.swrb.com/catalog/d.htm), left off Rutherford here has penned a great Christian charter of liberty against all forms of civil tyranny -- vindicating the Scriptural duty to resist tyrants as an act of loyalty to God.

Subtitled: "A dispute for the just prerogative of King and people: containing the reason and causes of the most necessary defensive wars of the kingdom of Scotland, and their expedition for the aid and help of their dear brethren of England; in which their innocency is asserted, and a full answer is given to a seditious pamphlet, entitled, ... The Sacred and Royal Prerogative of Christian Kings..." Rutherford used this book to promote the great work of covenanted reformation taking place in his day. Murray, in his Life of Samuel Rutherford (1827) notes,

"The work caused great sensation on its appearance. Bishop Guthrie mentions, that every member of the (Westminster--RB) assembly 'had in his hand that book lately published by Mr. Samuel Rutherford, which is so idolized, that whereas Buchanan's treatise (de jure Regni apud Scotos) was looked upon as an oracle, this coming forth, it was slighted as not anti-monarchical enough, and Rutherford's Lex Rex only thought authentic...' During the period which followed the death of Charles I. to the restoration, Rutherford took an active part in the struggles of the church in asserting her rights. Cromwell had in the meantime usurped the throne, and independency held sway in England. On the death of Cromwell in 1658, measures were taken for the restoration of Charles II. to the throne. The Scottish Parliament met in 1651, when the national covenant was recalled -- Presbyterianism abolished -- and all the decrees of Parliament, since 1638, which sanctioned the Presbyterian system, were rescinded. The rights of the people were thus torn from them -- their liberties trampled upon -- and the whole period which followed, till the martyrdom of Renwick in 1688, was a scene of intolerant persecution and bloodshed. Rutherford, as may be supposed, did not escape persecution in such a state of things. His work Lex, Rex, was considered by the government as 'inveighing against monarchy and laying the ground for rebellion;' and ordered to be burned by the hand of the common hangman at Edinburgh. It met with similar treatment at St. Andrews, and also at London; and a proclamation was issued, that every person in possession of a copy, who did not deliver it up to the king's solicitor, should be treated as an enemy to the government. Rutherford himself was deprived of his offices both in the University and the Church, and his stipend confiscated; he was ordered to confine himself within his own house, and was summoned to appear before the Parliament at Edinburgh, to answer a charge of high treason. It may easily be imagined what his fate would have been had he lived to obey the mandate."

At this time Rutherford was already terminally ill and uttered his famous words, "I have got summons already before a Superior Judge and Judicatory, and I behove to answer to my first summons, and ere your day come, I will be where few kings and great folks come." Don't miss this title, as its contents will become more and more valuable to the extent that present civil governments deny the Lordship of Christ, "frame wickedness by law," and persecute the faithful.

A Peaceable and Temperate Plea for Paul's Presbytery in Scotland (1642)

The title continues: "Or, A modest and Brotherly Dispute of the government of the Church of Scotland, Wherein, Our Discipline is demonstrated to be the true Apostolic way of divine Truth, and the Arguments on the contrary are friendly dissolved, the grounds of Separation and the Independents of particular Congregations, in defence of Ecclesiastical Presbyteries, Synods and Assemblies, are Examined and tried." "'This,' says Murray, 'is one of the most temperate, judicious, and best written works he (Rutherford--RB) ever gave the world. It corresponds in every respect with the promise which its title holds out; with this exception, that it is much more learned, dispassionate, and conclusive than the promise implies. It must have had a very considerable effect on public sentiment, and have served to pave the way for that introduction of the Presbyterian system into England which soon took place'" (cited in Rutherford's Letters, page 612, footnote 1, emphases added). It is another classic by one of the grand old leaders of the Protesters (i.e. the Covenanters who upheld the continuing obligation of the National and Solemn League and Covenant and the biblical attainments of the second Reformation). Thomas Smith calls Rutherford a "greatly experienced Christian, and celebrated divine," further noting that "Mr. Rutherford's reputation for piety, learning, and sound theology, was so highly raised, both at home and abroad, by his writings against the Arminians and Jesuits, which were composed in Latin, that, upon the death of the learned Dematius in 1651, the magistrates of Utrecht in Holland invited him to the divinity chair in that university" (Select Memoirs... of Pious and Learned English and Scottish Divines, pp. 636, 639). One need only read Rutherford to understand why he was held in such high esteem, internationally, by the Reformed community. 340 pages.

A Protest Against the Unlawful, Unfree and Unjust Assembly of the Resolutioners (1652)

Hewison writes of this paper, "(t)he Protesters compeared (at the pretended assembly of the Resolutioners--RB) to lodge a protestation subscribed by 63 ministers and 80 laymen, who declared the Assembly to be 'unlawful, unfrie, and unjust.' The Assembly threatened them with discipline" (The Covenanters, vol. 2, p. 43). Rutherford and the other Protesters held their ground and refused to have ecclesiastical fellowship with the backsliding, covenant-breaking Resolutioners -- a lesson on faithful biblical separation that has long since been forgotten. This work gives us a little slice of the Protesters views during this most important period of controversy in the Church of Scotland: for as Anderson notes, "(f)uture events showed the impolicy of these Resolutions. The men who were admitted by them into places of power and trust in the army and state, became, as the Protesters always predicted, the persecutors of the Church. Had the counsels of the Protesters prevailed, the twenty-eight years' persecution might not have existed" (cited in Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 120). Dodds adds this testimony, "Last fatal sign that the ancient spirit and the freedom of Scotland were about to disappear under a total eclipse, the Kirk hitherto impregnable, unyielding Kirk, stooped down from her old height and emitted Resolutions in favour of those proceedings of the royalists. Against these Resolutions, a large, bold, fierce minority headed by James Guthrie of Stirling protested that the principles of the Covenant should be maintained" (Ibid.). Finally, Johnston writes, Durham's last treatise had reference to the 'scandalous divisions' thus created, and what is particularly noticeable is the circumstance that David Dickson's last hours were embittered by the recollection of his short-sightedness in adopting these Resolutions. Rutherford's Catechism Containing the Sum of Christian Religion

"From the beginning of his pastorate at Anwoth and throughout his ministry Rutherford was said to have been a keen catechist and it was probably during his time at Anworth that the following catechism was written, at least in part. Mitchell suggests that it would 'not be put into final shape until he went as a commissioner to the Westminster Assembly, and was engaged in suggesting materials for the Catechism of the Assembly,'" writes Dickson in the Preface. "From the time of his settlement in Anwoth, Rutherford is said to have given special attention to catechising, both in his household and in his parish. The tradition as to... Denne, Eaton and others. In which is revealed the rise and spring of Antinomianism, Familists, Libertines, Swench-feldians, Enthysiasts, etc. The minde of Luther a most professed opposer of Antinomianism, is cleared, and diverse considerable points of the Law and the Gospel, of the Spirit and the Letter, of the two Covenants, of the nature of free grace, exercise under temptations, mortification, justification, sanctification, are discovered. In Two parts." Also contains Rutherford's "A brotherly and free Epistle to the patrons and friends of pretended Liberty of Conscience." Putting this work into its context, James Clark, in The Life and Works of Samuel Rutherford (in the chapter titled "Antinomianism") writes, "This is another main controversy into which Samuel Rutherford entered. The term 'Antinomian" signifies one who is 'against God's Law'. The Antinomians were a major sect in the 1640's. They denounced as 'Legalists' the Christians who, like Paul, 'serve the law of God' (Rom. 7:25). They asserted that grace removes the Law out of the Christian's life, as absolutely as it does out of his salvation. This dangerous heresy, which is still popular, makes it no fault to disobey God's Moral Law, and turn grace into wantonness. Rutherford mentioned this heresy in several of his works before publishing in 1648 his SURVEY OF THE SPIRITUAL ANTICHRIST, written specifically against the Antinomians. The subtlety of Antinomians is that they oppose the use of the Law as a positive standard for holy living in the name of the Gospel! The Apostle Paul repudiated this error in Rom. 3:31; 6:1,2; Gal. 5:13" (p. 52). This book contains over 600 pages.

Hooker "helped found Hartford, Connecticut (1636)... He helped create Connecticut's 'Fundamental Orders' (1638) and was instrumental in forming the New England Confederation (1643)" (Encyclopedia of the Reformed Faith). In this book Rutherford refutes Hooker's Independent views of church government in great detail. In doing so he has left us much to ponder regarding Presbyterianism, the constitution of the visible church (as it is revealed in Scripture), covenanting, separation, discipline, Arminianism, church communion and much more. Hooker's congregational way is easily accepted by the flesh and is prominently held by a wide range of professing Christians today -- from liberals all the way to those who call themselves Reformed. This book should go a long way to correcting this prevalent "democratic/egalitarian" heresy. Rutherford was (and still is through his books) one of the most notable defenders of the divine right of Presbyterianism since the days of the Apostles. This rare book has been generally unavailable to the public (as far as we know) for three centuries now -- until this reprinting -- and should be welcomed by all lovers of truth. 521 pages.

This is Rutherford's dying testimony. It sets forth what he thought most important to communicate in his last earthly words. Rutherford was one of the Scottish commissioners to the Westminster Assembly and has been acknowledged by many Reformed theologians since his time as a theological genius of the first order. Walker said of Rutherford, "It is not easy to find any one in Church history with whom to compare this remarkable man... a man of power, I may say of genius, fresh, bold, penetrating, to whom no subject came amiss, teeming with intellectual energy, distinguished for his learning, but never cumbered by it, the greatest scholastic of our Presbyterian Church, and yet we are told, the plain and faithful preacher, the fieriest of Church leaders and the most devout of saints, equally at home among the tomes of Aquinas, and writing letters to a poor congregation. Altogether a sort of intellectual, theological, religious prodigy!" (Theology and Theologians of Scotland 1560-1750, p. 13). Men graced with Rutherford's abilities, intellect and faith come but once or twice a millennium. Augustine, Calvin and Gillespie are others of this class. The Duty and Perpetual Obligation of Social Covenanting

The material found in this bound photocopy addresses a forgotten and neglected ordinance of God: social covenanting. God's people in times of repentance and thanksgiving, trial and blessing have been a covenanting people. In the most pure times of ecclesiastical and civil reformation throughout history, both church and state under the mediatorial rule of Christ have by the grace of God bound themselves together by covenant to promote and defend the true Christian religion. The first document adopted by the Westminster Assembly was in fact, the Solemn League and Covenant (1644). It united the kingdoms of Scotland, England, and Ireland in a covenanted reformation of both church and state in order to preserve, promote and defend the true Christian religion (as summarized in the Westminster Confession of Faith, Larger and Shorter Catechisms, Directory For Public Worship, and Form of Church Government), and in order to expose and uproot all false teaching contrary to the Scripture and these standards. Furthermore, it was not only the desire of the Westminster Assembly to unite in covenant the three British kingdoms, but rather to include in this covenanted reformation all of the Reformed Churches throughout Europe. Consider the goal of the Assembly as summarized by Hetherington:

"There was one great, and even sublime idea, brought somewhat indefinitely before the Westminster Assembly, which has not yet been realized, the idea of a Protestant union throughout Christendom, not merely for the purpose of counterbalancing Popery, but in order to purify, strengthen, and unite all true Christian churches, so that with combined energy and zeal they might go forth, in glad compliance with the Redeemer's commands, teaching all nations, and preaching the everlasting gospel to every creature under heaven. This truly magnificent, and also truly Christian idea, seems to have originated in the mind of that distinguished man, Alexander Henderson. It was suggested by him to the Scottish commissioners, and by them partially brought before the English Parliament, requesting them to direct the Assembly to write letters to the Protestant Churches in France, Holland, Switzerland, and other Reformed Churches. . . . and along with these letters were sent copies of the Solemn League and Covenant, a document which might itself form the basis of such a Protestant union. The deep thinking divines of the Netherlands apprehended the idea, and in their answer, not only expressed their approbation of the Covenant, but also desired to join in it with the British kingdoms. Nor did they content themselves with the mere expression of approval and willingness to join. A letter was soon afterwards sent to the Assembly from the Hague, written by Duraeus (the celebrated John Dury), offering to come to the Assembly, and containing a copy of a vow which he had prepared and tendered to the distinguished Oxenstiern, chancellor of Sweden, wherein he bound himself 'to prosecute a reconciliation between Protestants in point of religion'. . . . [O]n one occasion Henderson procured a passport to go to Holland, most probably for the purpose of prosecuting this grand idea. But the intrigues of politicians, the delays caused by the conduct of the Independents, and the narrow-minded Erastianism of the English Parliament, all conspired to prevent the Assembly from entering farther into that truly glorious Christian enterprise. Days of trouble and darkness came; persecution wore out the great men of that remarkable period; pure and vital Christianity was stricken to the earth and trampled under foot. . ." (William Hetherington, History of the Westminster Assembly of Divines, [Edmonton, Alberta: Still Waters Revival Books], pp. 337-339).

The material presented herein is commended to the reader with the sincere prayer and confidence that God will again restore the Church of Jesus Christ to a glorious covenanted reformation -- one that will even surpass that one to which she had attained at the time of the Westminster Assembly. However, when the Lord brings that future covenanted reformation it will not be limited to only three kingdoms of the earth, but by the grace and power of Christ our King, it will be a covenanted reformation that will encompass all of the nations of the earth (Ps. 2:6-12; Is. 2:1-4; Mt. 28:1-20) and will bring to the church a visible unity and uniformity that (unlike pleas for unity today) is firmly grounded upon the truth" (Greg Price, Preface).

A Brief Defence of Dissociation in the Present Circumstances (1996)

This work explains why Christians should separate themselves from those churches which deny biblical truth and its implications. It defends this position using many Reformation source documents. Samuel Rutherford has been especially misunderstood concerning separation. Examples of misleading and seriously flawed presentations of Rutherford's position on the church and separation have been seen in Walker's The Theology and Theologians of Scotland 1560-1750, Bacon's The Visible Church and Outer Darkness and a host of other works -- all of which overlook foundational second Reformation truths set forth by Rutherford and his fellow Covenanters. This book clearly demonstrates, from Rutherford's own actions and teaching (during the Protester/Resolutioner controversy in the Scottish church), how far off many previous works on this subject have been.

One example, given by the Puritan Reformed elders (below), exhibits Rutherford's (and the other Protesters) stand regarding covenanting, close communion and separation,

In fact, the issue of faithfulness to the covenants actually rent the Church of Scotland into two parties so that the Protesters declared the Assemblies of the Resolutioners (the covenant-breaking party that developed out of the Engagers) to be unconstitutional and pretended Assemblies. The covenants were obvious terms of communion, for Protesters and Resolutioners refused to meet in the same General Assemblies together. Protesters did not recognize the unlawful courts of the Resolutioner Assemblies and would not attend them when cited to appear. Protesters were deposed from the ministry by Resolutioner Assemblies when they refused to recognize their lawful authority to rule on behalf of Christ.

It [the joint General Assembly of Protesters and Resolutioners--PRC] met in St. Andrews on 16th July. . . . Rutherford, and other twenty-one sympathisers, protested against the meeting as unconstitutional. . . . There [later at Dundee, where the General Assembly of Protesters, who had separated themselves from the Resolutioners, was now meeting--PRC], on 22nd July [1651--PRC], Rutherford's cogent Protest declining the Assembly was read. Balcarres [a Resolutioner-- PRC] in vain demanded that the twenty-two absent Protesters should be reported for civil punishment for their reflections on the King, Parliament, and Church. The Assembly [of Resolutioners--PRC] ordered Presbyteries to deal with them. It was ultimately agreed to cite [James--PRC] Guthrie, Patrick Gillespie, James Simson, James Naismith, and John Menzies. They did not compear [i.e. appear at the Resolutioner assembly--PRC]. The [Resolutioner--PRC] Assembly deposed Guthrie, Gillespie, and Simson, suspended Naismith, and referred Menzies to the Commission. After the meeting of the Assembly at St. Andrews, a work was published entitled A Vindication of the Freedom and Lawfulness of the late Assembly [by James Wood, a Resolutioner--PRC], etc. This was answered by The Nullity of the Pretended Assembly at Saint Andrews and Dundee [signed by 40 Protesters including Rutherford and Guthrie--PRC](Hewison, The Covenanters, Vol. II, pp. 34,35, emphases added).

Separate Assemblies of Protesters and Resolutioners met in 1652 and in 1653 in Edinburgh. The Protesters declared the Assembly of the Resolutioners in 1652 to be "unlawful, unfrie, and unjust" (Hewison, The Covenanters, Vol. II, p. 43). It is worthy to be noted that the issue between the Protesters and the Resolutioners did not deal at all with the propriety of ministers and members of the Church of Scotland swearing the covenants, but over the issue of faithfulness to the covenants. Both sides upheld the obligation of ministers and members to own the covenants. Furthermore, unfaithfulness to this term of communion (i.e. faithfully maintaining the covenants) on the part of the Resolutioners led the Protesters to separate from their brethren to avoid schism and in order to maintain a truly constituted church. They would not serve with the Resolutioners while they maintained different terms of communion, neither would they serve them the Lord's Supper (e.g. Rutherford refused to serve communion with Blair at St. Andrews; and on another occasion Rutherford and Moncrieff debarred Resolutioners from the table at Scoonie). Such actions can only be defended if the covenants were terms of communion. Were the covenants biblical terms of communion? We testify that they were and still are biblical terms of communion. To affirm otherwise is in effect to charge the faithful covenanters (Protesters) of the Second Reformation with sin and to undermine their covenanted reformation and the biblical presbyterianism they taught and practiced.

The following excerpt gives a short synopsis of those truths which this book seeks to vindicate. The elders of The Puritan Reformed Church write,

"Though it is not necessary that a truly constituted church be absolutely pure as to the doctrine taught or embraced, as to the ordinances administered, or the public worship performed, it is, however, necessary that its constitution be founded upon and agreeable to the Word of God and that its constitution reflect the light attained to by the purest of Reformed Churches (for all reformation must be biblical reformation if it is reformation at all, otherwise it is not a reformation but a deformation, cf. Phil. 3:16). Wherefore, to adopt a constitution that corrupts the light of Scripture or the light of reformation is to adopt a false constitution. A false constitution renders a church and its courts unconstitutional. When the Confession of Faith (25:4) speaks of degrees of purity among particular churches within the "catholick church", we believe it designates degrees of purity within truly constituted churches. For example, though the church of Corinth was plagued with division, immorality, and false doctrine promoted by some within the church (and therefore manifested a lesser degree of purity than other truly constituted churches, cf. the church of Smyrna in Rev. 2:8-11), it was, nevertheless, a truly constituted church for it was constituted by apostolic authority (with apostolic doctrine, apostolic worship, apostolic government, and apostolic discipline). Thus, for a church to constitutionally adhere to Arminianism, Dispensationalism, or Charismatic experientialism (false doctrine), singing uninspired hymns or using instrumental music in public praise (false worship), Episcopacy or Independency (false government), or unrestricted communion (false discipline) is to qualify as a constitutionally false church. That is not to say that there are no believers in churches that are not truly constituted (there may be many in some cases). Nor is it to imply that ministers or elders within those churches do not courageously stand for many truths taught in Scripture. It is simply to say that authority to rule in the church must come from Christ, and if a church does not have a constitution of which He approves (as King of His church), then there is no lawful authority to rule or to administer the ordinances on His behalf."

The title continues: "More particularly, her approving of, and going into the legal establishment of the Prelatic constitutions of England. The generality of ministers swearing, in the Oath of Abjuration, to maintain Erastianism, Prelacy, and English Popish Ceremonies. Non-Jurants joining with Jurants, judicially approving that practice to be free of scandal. The Church's establishing tyranny in government, against all who will not join in communion with her, and approve her practices without redress of grievances. Wherein these and several other causes of withdrawing are proven to be justly chargeable on the Church, demonstrated to be contrary to the Word of God and Reformed principles of this Church, and just grounds of withdrawing, and setting up judicatures distinct from her; and the objections of Jurants and others fully answered." This is a classic, detailed statement of the old covenanted principles and the biblical attainments of the second Reformation (like the Solemn League and Covenant, the Westminster standards, etc.). It is also an excellent defense against the modern malignants who counsel Christ's children to remain in the backsliding and covenant breaking denominations that abound in our day. The Covenants and the Covenanters: Covenants, Sermons, and Documents of the Covenanted Reformation

The Reformed Presbytery (in 1879) has well noted the following incongruity that is still with us today, "We heard from various quarters the cry, -- 'maintain the truth, -- stand up for the principles of the Second Reformation:' and yet many of those who are the most loud in uttering this cry, appear desirous to bury in oblivion those imperishable national and ecclesiastical deeds, by which the church and kingdom of Scotland became 'married to the Lord'" (A Short Vindication of Our Covenanted Reformation, p. 20). This book should go a long way to remedying the above noted ignorance and hypocrisy among those who now call upon the name of the Lord -- especially those who claim a Reformation heritage and are still open to further growth -- as it spells out in no uncertain terms what lay at the heart of the second Reformation. Moreover, these covenants (landmarks of the Lord) stand as beacons to all nations of their continuing moral duty to bind themselves to Christ (first commandment) or suffer His avenging wrath (Ps. 2). And make no mistake about it, the Lord will utterly destroy all those who quarrel with His covenant bonds, whether individuals, churches or nations -- the mystery of iniquity will fall! The prefatory note to this magnificent volume well describes its value:

"The Covenants, Sermons, and Papers in this volume carry the readers back to some of the brightest periods in Scottish history. They mark important events in that great struggle by which these three kingdoms (England, Scotland and Ireland--RB) were emancipated from the despotisms of Pope, Prince, and Prelate, and an inheritance of liberty secured for these Islands of the Sea. The whole achievements of the heroes of the battlefields are comprehended under that phrase of Reformers and Martyrs, 'The Covenanted Work of Reformation.' The attainments of those stirring times were bound together by the Covenants, as by rings of gold. The Sermons here were the product of the ripe thought of the main actors in the various scenes--men of piety, learning, and renown. Hence, the nature, objects , and benefits of personal and national Covenanting are exhibited in a manner fitted to attract to that ordinance the minds and hearts of men. The readers can well believe the statements of Livingstone, who was present at several ceremonies of covenant-renovation: 'I never saw such motions from the Spirit of God. I have seen more than a thousand persons all at once lifting up their hands, and the tears falling down from their eyes.' In the presence of the defences of the Covenants as deeds, by these preachers, the baseless aspersions of novelists and theologians fade out into oblivion. True Christians must, as they ponder these productions, be convinced that the Covenanters were men of intense faith and seraphic fervour, and their own hearts will burn as they catch the heavenly flame. Members of the Church of Christ will be stirred to nobler efforts for the Kingdom of their Lord as they meditate on the heroism of those who were the 'chariots of Israel and the horsemen thereof;' and they will behold with wonder that 'to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time (the present great apostasy--RB), from the face of the serpent.' And Statesman will discover how princes, parliaments, and peoples united in the hearty surrender of themselves to the Prince of the kings and kingdoms of the earth; and will be aroused to promote that policy of Christian Statesmanship which, illustrating the purpose and will of God, the Father, shall liberate Parliaments and nations from the bonds of false religions, and assert for them those liberties and honours which spring from the enthronement of the Son of man, and King of kings and Lord of lords. This volume of documents of olden times is sent out on a mission of Revival of Religion, personal and national, in the present times. It would do a noble work if it helped to humble classes and masses, and led them to return as one man to that God in covenant from Whom all have gone so far away. A national movement, in penitence and faith, for the repeal of the Acts Recissory and the recognition of the National Covenants would be as life from the dead throughout the British Empire. The people and rulers of these dominions shall yet behold the brilliancy of the Redeemer's crowns; and shall, by universal consent, exalt Him who rules in imperial majesty over the entire universe of God. For, 'The seventh angel sounded, and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the Kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ."

Here we have some of the most moving sermons ever addressed to a people and their nations, given before the most solemn of occasions -- national covenant renewal! Alexander Henderson, Andrew Cant, Joseph Caryl, Edmond Calamy and a host of other Puritan Covenanters (even the turncoat Independent Philip Nye) are included here in easy to read modern (1895) type. Anyone interested in seeing the royal prerogatives of King Jesus once again trumpeted throughout the nations, on a national and international scale, needs this book -- for these men "were setting up landmarks by which the city of God will be known at the dawn of the millennial day" (Thomas Sproull cited in the Reformed Presbytery's Short Vindication [http://www.swrb.com/catalog/r.htm ], p. 38). 442 pages with illustrations.

History of the Reformation in Europe in the Time of Calvin (8 volumes, 1880 edition)

This engaging set, comprising eight volumes, is the sequel to J.H. Merle D'Aubigne's History of the Reformation of the Sixteenth Century (in 5 Volumes, 1846, [$US34.91, cerlox bound photocopy; $US89.00, Hardcover photocopy OUT OF PRINT]). In his typical easy-to-read, captivating style, the author resumes where he had left off in his other five volumes (which focused more on Luther and the period of Reform up to 1531), entering, in this set, upon the more developed Reformation thought of Calvin, Knox, et al.

The preface (in volume one) of this important work states it this way,

At the conclusion of the preface to the first volume of the History of the Reformation, the author wrote, 'This work will consist of four volumes, or at the most five, which will appear successively.' These five volumes have appeared. In them are described the heroic times of Luther, and the effects

produced in Germany and other countries by the characteristic doctrine of that reformer -- justification by faith. They present a picture of that great epoch which contained in the germ the revival of Christianity in the last three centuries. The author has thus completed the task he had assigned himself; but there still remained another.

The times of Luther were followed by those of Calvin. He, like his great predecessor, undertook to search the Scriptures, and in them he found the same truth and the same life; but a different character distinguishes his work.

The renovation of the individual, of the Church, and of the human race, is his theme. If the Holy Ghost kindles the lamp of truth in man, it is (according to Calvin) 'to the end that the entire man should be transformed.' -- 'In the kingdom of Christ,' he says, 'it is only the new man that flourishes and has any vigor, and whom we ought to take into account.' This renovation is, at the same time, an enfranchisement; and we might assign, as a motto to the reformation accomplished by Calvin, as well as to apostolical Christianity itself, these words of Jesus Christ: The truth shall make you free. (John 8:32)...

The reformation of the sixteenth century restored to the human race what the middle ages had stolen from them; it delivered them from the traditions, laws, and despotism of the papacy; it put an end to the minority and tutelage in which Rome claimed to keep mankind for ever; and by calling upon man to establish his faith not on the word of a priest, but on the infallible Word of God, and by announcing to every one free access to the Father through the new and saving way -- Christ Jesus, it proclaimed and brought about the hour of Christian manhood...

Luther transformed princes into heroes of the faith, and we have described with admiration their triumphs at Augsburg and elsewhere. The reformation of Calvin was addressed particularly to the people, among whom it raised up martyrs until the time came when it was to send forth the spiritual conquerors of the world. For three centuries it has been producing, in the social condition of the nations that have received it, transformations unknown to former times. And still at this very day, and now perhaps more than ever, it imparts to the men who accept it a spirit of power which makes them chosen instruments, fitted to propagate truth, morality, and civilisation to the ends of the earth.

In this extensive chronicle of international Reformation the author has made use of the archives in Geneva, Calvin's Latin letters, numerous French documents of the sixteenth century and many other sources not readily available (especially to English readers). This has greatly increased the value of this work, as a great deal of this information is not available elsewhere in English. Moreover, the broad historical and geographical range (from the Hugenots to the Netherlands to Norway and on) covered herein, coupled with the author's extensive research (in various languages) makes this an unique treasure for those seeking to "walk in the footsteps of the flock" (Song of Solomon 1:8). In fact, there are few other large Reformation histories, written by Calvinists, that rival this set.
