L'Avenir - Apocalyptic
Interpretation
Since the time of the great Reformation, there have been no less than SIX
PROMINENT THEORIES of eschatological
interpretation, each claiming for itself the palm of merit, and all demanding
the unanimous suffrage of the Christian Church. This article
summarizes these positions while also exposing the Jesuit origins of Preterism
and Futurism. It
also notes that Historicism was
the theory of the Waldenses, Wickliffites, and Hussites; and the great body of
the Reformers in the 16th century-German, Swiss, French, English, generally
received it. It has been the view of the vast majority of Scottish
Presbyterians. It was also the view of many prominent American divines, from
Edwards to the 19th century Princeton theologians - the Alexanders, the Hodges,
Miller, etc. It is
preeminently the theory of the Reformation, and
therefore has been violently opposed by Roman Catholics, prelatists,
rationalising expositors and other foes of reformational principles.

LANDIS, ROBERT W.
The Doctrine of Original Sin, as Received and Taught by the
Churches of the Reformation Stated and Defended, and the Error of Dr. Hodge in
Claiming that this Doctrine Recognizes the Gratuitous Imputation of Sin,
Pointed Out and Refuted
(1844)
Considered a classic in its field, this book of over 550 pages
takes on Charles Hodge and his views concerning original sin. The author states that the "doctrine
concerning Imputation and Original Sin" as taught "for many years
past, in the Theological School at Princeton" is a "radical departure
from... recognized Augustinian theology, or Calvinism." The author also notes "that the difference in
this issue is fundamental to evangelical doctrine. The design of the present
tractate, therefore, is to furnish a thorough historical, theological, and
exegetical discussion of the essential points which this issue involves." Furthermore, Landis writes (concerning Hodge's view)
that "the church herself can ultimately and logically have no possible
alternative but either to abandon all the distinctive principles of the
Augustinian or evangelical system of doctrine, or to reject this (i.e.
Hodge's--RB) theory utterly and in all its parts."

Sermons of Hugh Latimer (Vol. 1)
The British Electoral Franchise: Or, Why Reformed Presbyterians Do Not
Vote at Political Elections (1884)
"Although written with specific reference to the British Constitution,
this booklet (originally published in Canada in 1884 "by the authority of
The Reformed Presbytery of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia") deals with the
biblical principles which should convince Christians to refrain from voting in
any of the former British colonies or the United States. Although Covenanters
believe strongly in God-ordained civil government and the legitimacy of
political activity by Christians in regimes that acknowledge Christ as King,
these conditions do not exist in such countries as Canada and the United
States. Rather, the constitutions of Canada and the US contradict the Bible on
many points, and it is therefore unlawful for Christians to engage in
activities (such as voting) that legitimate those constitutions. This short
introduction to the main issues would be helpful to any Christians who want to
honor the Lord in the political sphere of their lives" (Michael G. Wagner).

LEA, CHARLES HENRY
A History of the Inquisition of the Middle Ages (1887, 4 volumes)
One of the perennial (and insurmountable)
challenges for men like Scott Hahn, Gerry
Matatics, and Karl Keating -- men who have devoted their lives and
labors to the defense and promulgation of the Roman Catholic apostasy -- is
dealing with their Church's history. The grim irony
is that while these modern champions of Antichrist demand submission to the
Holy Roman Church, contending that she alone has the witness of history and
truth on her side, it is her very history indeed which removes forever any
crumb of credibility to her claims of faithfulness and infallibility. Thus, it has always been
one of the most powerful weapons in the arsenal of Christ's faithful witnesses
simply to recount the true and undeniable history of the Mother of Harlots and
Abominations of the Earth (Rev. 17:5). This tactic was used with
devastating success by Luther, Calvin, and others, and is of equal necessity
and efficacy in our day -- especially in light of the detestable neutrality and
even outright returning to the ways of Rome on the part of so many
"Protestant" and even "Reformed" and
"Presbyterian" churches. Through this means it is hoped that God will
wake up His people to the true nature of the ever-raging battle with the Dragon
and his minions, and drive us to our knees to seek His face, His forgiveness,
and His grace to stand against the darkness in our respective places and callings
-- particularly teaching our children the mighty acts of God in delivering His
people in times past from so great an evil, that they might be thankful and put
their trust in Him (Ps. 78:1-8).
In his atrocious chronicle, Rome Sweet Home: Our Journey to Catholicism,
Scott Hahn conveniently omits any mention of the
volumes of embarrassing and self-refuting details of the Roman Church's true
history, choosing instead to caricature the Reformers, pretend to scholarly
acumen, and do the very thing he hypocritically accuses Lorraine Boettner of
doing: presenting a lying portraiture of Rome. (See also the reference to Hahn in the book summary
for William Whitaker's Disputation on Holy Scripture, another irrefutable resource for squelching his
siren song of spiritual seduction: http://www.swrb.com/catalog/W.htm.) Therefore, we invite all seekers of truth to examine for
themselves one ugly chapter in the annals of Rome's abominations: the
inquisition of the Middle Ages. It is with gratitude to our merciful
God and the earnest desire for His powerful blessing that we once again present
to the public what was once a standard treatment on the subject, Henry Charles
Lea's History of the Inquisition of the Middle Ages.
To close, we leave you with Larry Birger's
comments. They are to the point and provide us with a telling summary of this
work (and the thoughts and feelings of righteous
indignation that such writing is sure to evoke among those led by the Spirit of
God),
I
am simply amazed at the true history of Rome. The best and only explanation I
can find for why men would endure, much less embrace, such a "church"
is what God says in 2 Thess. 2: that He's given them over to blindness, that
they might believe great lies and thereby be justly damned for their failure to
receive the love of the truth. In just the glances I had at Lea's work, I am
simply astonished that any individual could submit himself to the "Holy
Mother" of harlotries and abominations which Rome is clearly seen to be in
these volumes. The Romish legacy of demonic brutality, inhumanity and
disgrace stretches the ability of even fallen man to comprehend.

Always Victorious! The
Earliest Church Not Pre- But Postmillennial (2000)
A fascinating 24 page look at early church history and eschatology (with
English translations of Latin works) which backs up the following strong
statements by Dr. Lee,
The plain truth is: Chiliasm
(Premillennialism--RB) is neither Old-Testamentical, Ancient-Apocryphal,
Pseudepigraphical, New-Testamentical, Neo-Apocryphal, or Early-Patristic.
Instead, it is a Mid-Patristic minority viewpoint -- derived from Zoroastrian Paganism. Where, then, did the unscriptural chiliastic
teaching of the "double resurrection" come from? Whence arose this
teaching of a physical resurrection of the saints separated by a thousand years from a subsequent physical
resurrection of the wicked? Not from the Bible -- but from Babel!
It was only from the middle of the second century
A.D. onward, then, that the Babylonian-Persian chiliastic idea of two widely-separated physical resurrections
began to expand even on the fringes of the Christian Church. First it influenced Sub-Christian groups like the
Cerinthians, Ebionites, and the Montanists -- cf. too the modern
Mormons, Pentecostalists, Seventh-day Adventists, and Jehovah's Witnesses. And
then it ultimately influenced even some of the authentically-Christian groups
themselves.
We summarize. None of the books of the Bible nor any extant writings of the Earliest Church Fathers -- such as the Didachee
or Teaching of the Twelve Apostles (A.D. 97), the Epistle of Barnabas (98), Clement of Rome (98), Hermas (100), Ignatius
(107), Quadratus (120), the Epistle to Diognetus (130), Pseudo-Clement (135), Polycarp (140), or
Papias (145) -- are chiliastic. With the exception of the Mid-Patristic Justin
(150), Irenaeus (185), Tertullian (200) and those who followed them -- none of
the later Patristic Fathers were Chiliasts.

LEE, NIGEL
Antichrist in Scripture: Luther and Calvin's Doctrine of
the Antichrist (1992)
Few Christians know that the anti-Protestant
Futurist theory originated with a Spanish Jesuit by the name of Ribera, who, in
1585, published a Commentary on the Revelation, in which he laboured to turn
aside the Protestant application of the Apocalyptic prophecies and symbols from
the church of Rome. It is also not
well known that the anti-Protestant Praterite (preterist) theory came from the
pen of a Spanish Jesuit, Alcasar of Seville, who in 1615 published a work
having in view the same end as Ribera, viz, to set aside the commonly accepted
Reformation view that the Roman Papacy is the Antichrist (adapted from Original
Covenanter and Contending Witness
magazine).
This books shows how and why
"the Reformers denominated the papacy as Antichrist." Some quotes from the
writings of Calvin and Luther appear here in English for the first time.
Regarding the Protestant testimony set forth herein Paisley has stated,
the
preaching of the Great Cloud of Witnesses of all ages in the Church is true...
that the little horn is none other than the Dynasty of Rome's Popes and that
therefore THE POPE IS THE ANTICHRIST.
This view (the "continuous historical
Protestant theory") stands in agreement with
Luther, Calvin, Knox, the Westminster Divines, Owen, Ames, Spurgeon, Baxter,
Matthew Henry, Jonathan Edwards, Cunningham, Ryle, Cotton, Brown, and virtually
all of the other standard Protestant interpreters of the book of Revelation.
Lee provides
several pages of useful references on this topic in the various Protestant Confessions of Faith. He points out how the Westminster Confession and the Preamble to
the Decrees of Dordt 1618-19 both clearly denominate the Papacy as the antichrist.
He concludes his book with a useful chapter summarizing the contents (British
Reformed Journal, April, 1993).

LEE, FRANCIS NIGEL
Calvin's Convincing Antipaedocommunionism (2002)
In the last couple of decades there has been
increasing interest in the Reformation among Bible-believing Christians. This
has included a revival of Reformation doctrines and practices like Calvinist
soteriology, historicist eschatology, and the regulative principle of worship.
These developments are important and extremely positive. Ironically, while more
people are drawn to Reformation truths, others who are already in the Reformed
camp are being drawn away from the Reformation in certain areas. One such area
is the issue of paedocommunionism, or the view that all baptized children (and
infants) should partake of the Lord's Supper.
Paedocommunion is unscriptural and opposed by all of the historic Reformed and
Presbyterian confessions. In fact, one
could say that it is a dangerous heresy that is causing division in many
churches.
This new book by Dr. Francis
Nigel Lee demonstrates how strongly John Calvin opposed paedocommunion. Calvin was familiar with the arguments used to
justify that practice, and he refuted them at different points in his work. He
strongly believed that no one -- including baptized children -- should ever be
allowed to partake of the Lord's Supper without being catechized. Lee provides
numerous quotations from various books by Calvin where this point is made.
For example, Calvin refuted
paedocommunion in this comment on a passage from the Gospel of John.
"In John
6:41-53, during His sermon to the murmuring and strife-filled Jews who were acquainted
with His earthly parents, Jesus made a very significant statement. He said:
'Truly, I tell you -- unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His
blood, you have no life within yourselves!' Paedocommunionists
sacramentalistically think that this passage requires their own position.
Post-Nicene and indeed Post-Chrysostomian Eastern-Orthodox Paedocommunionists,
as well as their modern maverick Western Quasi-Neocalvinist imitators, cite
especially this to support their views. Here, however, Calvin comments: 'This
sermon [of Christ] does not refer to the Lord's Supper, but to the continual
communication which we have -- apart from the reception of the Lord's
Supper.... As far as young children are concerned, Christ's ordinance forbids
them to participate in the Lord's Supper -- because they cannot yet try
themselves or celebrate the remembrance of the death of Christ (quia nondum
se ipsos probare nondum colere memoriam mortis Christi possunt).... It is wrong to expound this whole passage, as applying
to the Lord's Supper!'" (p. 9).
When discussing 1 Corinthians 11
Calvin again emphasizes the fact that the participants must be able to examine
themselves and discern the Lord's body.
As Lee points out,
"speaking
specifically of infants and children, Calvin observes that they 'cannot partake
worthily without being able duly to discern the sanctity of the Lord's body.'
Consequently, seeing that the swallowing of the bread and wine by the unworthy
is 'poison' to them at Holy Communion -- 'Why should we stretch out poison to
our young children -- instead of vivifying food?!'" (p. 12).
According to Calvin, in the
earliest period of the church's history, children would have to be catechized
for a relatively long period, and then be publicly examined before being
allowed to partake of the Lord's Supper.
"We now turn
to Calvin's understanding of first Catechism... before Admission to Communion
-- as practised by the Early Patristic Church. By the latter, we mean
especially the Ante-Nicene Church, which was still following the example of the
Apostles (in Acts 19:2-7 and Second Timothy 1:6 and Hebrews 6:2 etc.). In
Early-Patristic times, said Calvin, 'a boy of ten years of age would present
himself to the Church' (at the beginning of his years'-long catechetical period
-- as in many Reformed Churches even today). This self-presentation was
undertaken -- in order 'to make a Profession of Faith' at the end of that
years-long period. Thus, such infantly-baptized covenant children were, 'toward
the end of their boyhood or on adolescence brought forward by their parents and
were examined by the Overseer in terms of the Catechism which was then in
common use.... Thus the boy on his faith being approved, was dismissed with a
solemn blessing. Ancient writers often make mention of this custom.' Thus, the
adolescent 'would be questioned on each head -- and give answers to each [cf.
Luke 2:42-47]. If he was ignorant of any point, or did not well understand it
-- he would be taught. Thus, while the whole Church looked on and witnessed, he
would profess the one true sincere faith'" (p.16).
By the time of Augustine,
paedocommunion had crept into the church.
"Augustine did
not oppose the fourth-century ecclesiastic innovation of Communion for
Pre-adolescents. Yet Augustine nevertheless clearly insisted on all would-be
Communicants being priorly catechized -- and rejected the communing of
uncatechizable speechless infants as distinct from catechizable children.
Clearly referring to Ante-Nicene ecclesiastical practice, Calvin continued: 'It
was anciently customary for the [infantly-baptized] children of Christians,
after they had grown up, to appear before the Overseer -- to fulfil that duty
which was required of such [unbaptized] adults as presented themselves for Baptism
[viz., to prepare to receive their first Holy Communion]. These
[infantly-baptized covenant children] sat among the [unbaptized] Catechumens --
until they [all] were duly instructed in the Mysteries of the faith, and could
make a Confession of it before Overseer and people. The infants therefore, who
had been initiated by [Infant] Baptism -- not then having given a Confession of
[their own] faith to the Church -- were... toward the end of their boyhood or
on adolescence -- brought forward by their parents and were examined by the
Overseer in terms of the Catechism which was then in common use... I wish we
could retain the custom which, as I have observed, existed in the Early
Church.... A boy of ten years of age would present himself to the Church [at the
beginning of his three-years-long catechetical period, in order] to make a
Profession of Faith.... [He would then] be questioned on each head -- and give
answers to each [Luke 2:40-47 cf. Prov. 22:6].' Thus Calvin" (pp. 17-18).
Later in church history, the
heretic Servetus, although not a paedocommunionist himself, used
paedocommunionist arguments as a backdoor approach to argue against
paedobaptism. Servetus
"arrogantly
argued that the paedobaptist Protestants were inconsistent. To become consistent,
they should, he suggested, immediately admit their own baptized infants --
while still babies -- to the Lord's Supper. Alternatively, they should instead
(and rather!) follow Servetus himself -- and repudiate, together with the
'Infant Communion' they rightly opposed, also the Infant Baptism they wrongly
upheld. Thus Servetus" (p. 22).
Referring to Servetus, Calvin
responds:
"'that which
he transfers to Baptism [viz. conscious prior self-examination], properly
belongs to the Supper. As appears from Paul's words, 'Let a man examine
himself!' -- words similar to which are nowhere used with reference to Baptism!
Whence we infer, that those who from nonage are incapable of
'[self-]examination' -- are duly baptized! ... By Baptism, they are admitted
into the fold of Christ -- and the symbol of adoption is sufficient for them,
until they grow up and become fit to bear solid food. We must, therefore, wait
for the time of examination -- which God distinctly demands in the sacred
Supper'" (p. 22).
Calvin strongly emphasized the
need for children to be thoroughly catechized before partaking of the Lord's
Supper. After this grounding in the
Gospel, older children could then be admitted to the Table.
"Held Calvin:
'This rite [of Admission to the Lord's Supper] came from the Apostles.... We
should know that it was instituted...to be a solemn ceremony of prayer.... They
intended by this sign to confirm the Profession of Faith which adolescents[!]
make, when they pass from[!] their childhood.... Today, we must retain the
institution in its purity!' Calvin also pleaded: 'I wish we could retain the
custom which, as I have observed, existed in the Early Church before this
abortive mask of a Sacrament [of Mediaeval Confirmation] appeared! It would not
be such a Confirmation as they [the Mediaevalists] pretend -- one which cannot
even be named without injury to Baptism.... But [instead, it would be a]
catechizing by which those in boyhood or immediately beyond it would give an
account of their faith.... A boy of ten years of age would present himself to
the Church [at the beginning of a three-years' long Catechetical Course] -- to
make a Profession of Faith.... [He] would be questioned on each head, and give
answers to each. If he was ignorant of any point or did not well understand it,
he would be taught. Thus, while the whole Church looked on and witnessed, he
would profess the one true sincere faith [Luke 2:40-47 cf. First Timothy
6:12].... Were this discipline in force in the
present day -- it would undoubtedly whet the sluggishness of certain parents
who carelessly neglect the instruction of their children!'" (p.
23).
"Calvin thus
much appreciated and indeed endeavored to restore 'the custom' of the
Pre-Romish Ancient Church -- namely, to enroll ten-year-old covenant children
in a Catechism Class and train them there for three years. Thus: Aboth 5:21;
Luke 2:41-53; Clement of Alexandria; and the Apostolic Constitutions. Those
ten-year-olds should, felt Calvin, stay in their Catechism Class until they
could be admitted to Holy Communion. The latter could first occur only at their
attainment of religious majority (cf. Luke 2:40-47) -- and even then, only
after they further also made their own 'Profession of Faith.' Compare: First
Timothy 6:12-21. As Rev. Professor Dr. Abraham Kuyper Sr. later pointed out --
a provision such as First Corinthians 11:29 requires the attainment of a
competent age or 'aetas competens...,
which was of old fixed at approximately in the fourteenth year (thus Calvin too).'
It should be noted here that Calvin's 'ten years' was not the 'finishing date'
-- alias the terminus ad quem of a
covenant child's catechizing. To the contrary, it was the 'date of enrolment'
alias the terminus a quo -- from
which the Church enrolled him in the (three-years'-long!) Communion Class. Thus
Calvin, Kuyper, and Dijk. Indeed, this 'Communion
Class Catechizing' (from ages ten through thirteen) was quite distinct from,
and in addition to, the child learning the Catechism during daily family worship
at home -- both before and after age ten. Calvin was saying, then,
that the Ancient-Hebrew age of thirteen, if not yet better his own
recommendation of age fifteen, was the minimum optimal age of admission to the
Lord's Supper. As M.J. Du P. Beukes has remarked in his book Worship: 'Most
expositors judge that Calvin meant that the catechizing would take place when
ten, and the Profession of Faith when fifteen, as mentioned in the Swiss
Catechism.' For Calvin himself stated
elsewhere: 'No godparent shall be accepted as sponsor for a child --
unless...at least fifteen years old; of the same
confession with us; and has been duly instructed.'... Calvin's own
Catechism Classes helped prepare infantly-baptized covenant children who were
beginning to approach teen-age -- for their later admission to the Lord's Table
after reaching puberty" (pp. 23-24).
Not just children, of course,
but even adult Christians had to be properly grounded in the truth as well as living
holy lives before Calvin would allow them the Lord's Supper.
"Well known is Calvin's refusal, on several occasions, to
administer the scheduled Communion Services in circumstances of gross
congregational sin. Especially from 1540 onward, Calvin's
increasingly mature views tended toward even more care -- while manducating at
Communion... Indeed, in Calvin's December 1540 letter to Rev. Nicholas Parent,
Calvin declared: 'I am well pleased that you have delayed the Holy Supper for
another month. For at the present time, you could not administer it -- without
neglecting that order which, for very sufficient reasons, I earnestly desire to
be carefully attended to!'" (p. 25).
Unlike many modern Reformed
and Presbyterian ministers and elders, Calvin had no qualms about barring unfit
persons from the Lord's Supper.
"In Calvin's
1541 Geneva Catechism -- 'being a form of instruction for children in the
doctrine of Christ' -- he writes that 'it were to be wished...that one Catechism were common to all the churches.... The
agreement which our churches had in Doctrine, cannot be seen with clearer
evidence than from Catechisms. For therein will appear not only what
one man or other once taught -- but with what rudiments learned and unlearned
alike amongst us, were constantly imbued from childhood -- all the faithful
holding them as their formal symbol of Christian Communion. This was indeed my
principal reason for publishing this Catechism.' 'It has ever been the practice
of the Church... to see that children should be duly instructed in the
Christian religion. That this might be done..., in old[en] times it was a
received public custom and practice to question children in the churches.... To
secure this being done in order, there was written out a Formula which was
called a Catechism.. In this way, the administration...of the Supper... is
confined.... The Minister ought to take heed not to give it to anyone who is
clearly unworthy of receiving it.' ... For: 'In the Supper, the Minister ought
to take heed not to give it to anyone who is clearly unworthy of receiving
it.... It cannot be done without insulting and profaning the Sacrament.... There should be a certain order of government
established in churches.... The method is for Elders to be chosen to preside as
censors of manners [or morals], to guard watchfully against offences -- and
exclude from Communion all whom they recognize to be unfit for it, and who
could not be admitted without profaning the Sacrament.' Cf. Exodus
12:21-28,37,43-48" (pp. 26-27).
Calvin was incensed at the
thought of being accused of practicing open communion.
"'The rule is,
that the young do not come forward to the Sacred Table till they have given an
account of their faith.... It is most false to say that we [Calvinists]
knowingly and willingly offer the Supper indiscriminately to strangers and
persons not approved.... Westphal is wrong too in inferring that...we admit to
the Supper without previous examination.'" (p. 32).
Importantly, Dr. Lee points out
that Calvin endorsed the practice of using communion tokens, a practice closely
associated with close (rather than open or infant/child) communion.
"During the
same year as he rebuked the Gnesio- or Hyper-Lutheran Heshusius, Calvin also
defended the French Hugenots' (inter alia also antipaedocommunionistic) use of Communion
Tokens. The mereau (plural mereaux)
was a circular token which the Huguenots used in France from the 1550's to the
mid-19th century. During Holy Communion an Elder would, before the service,
give a mereau to each parishioner who qualified to receive the Sacrament. The
others, who did not attend catechism regularly or had been admonished by the
Consistory, would not receive a mereau. During the Communion Service, each
individual would hand his mereau to an Elder standing next to the Communion
Table before receiving bread and wine. In
approximately 1561 Calvin wrote a 'letter to the faithful in France' in which
he strongly urged them to use the mereaux. The use of such an
attendance token consequently became common practice. For more than 200 years
it served as a token of adherence to the persecuted religion and its rites, as
well as a secret symbol of the solidarity of the faithful. Consequently,
Communion Tokens used to admit people to the Lord's Table were not used solely
by the Scottish Reformed Church. They were, in fact, taken over by the Scots
from the French Hugenots after Calvin himself approved the practice in 1531" (pp. 33-34).
Calvin's emphasis on beginning catechism at
age ten can be seen again in the following account.
"Calvin had
remarked in his Commentary on Second Thessalonians that even a ten-year-old boy
can discern that the papacy is the man of sin. In the light of Calvin's further
statements also in his Institutes that neither the Passover nor the Holy Supper
were and are for children, but that (the triennial) catechizing toward later
admission to the Lord's Table should commence precisely when ten - his Epistle
Dedicatory to the Most Illustrious Prince Henry Duke of Vendome Heir to the Kingdom
of Navarre, takes on added significance. It is to be found at the beginning of
his mature (1563-64) Commentaries on the Book of Genesis. The young Prince of Navarre had been born in 1553.
The Epistle Dedicatory was written in 1563, and thus when the Prince was
precisely ten years old. Significantly, as regards the Commentary itself,
Calvin advised young Prince Henry: 'Many things contained in this book are
beyond the capacity of your age [10], yet I am not acting unreasonably in
offering it to your perusal and even to your attentive and diligent study. For
since the knowledge of ancient things is pleasant to the young, you will soon
arrive at those years [=13+ ?!] in which the History of the Creation of the
World as well as that of the most Ancient Church will engage your thoughts with
equal profit and delight..... Farewell, most Illustrious Prince! May God
preserve you in safety under His protection! May He adorn you more and more
with spiritual gifts, and enrich you with every kind of benediction!'" (p.
34).
Catechizing was of central
importance to Calvin. It is vital for the future of the church that children be
catechized. And no children could partake of the Lord's Supper without having
achieved a proper degree of doctrinal knowledge.
"Calvin believed
that baptized Protestant infants -- or even infants baptized in the Romish
Church, but desiring to embrace Communicant Membership in the Protestant Church
-- should be given weekly catechizing, while being prepared over three years
for admission to the Lord's Table. Ideally, this would be from age ten to
thirteen. Consequently, Calvin wrote to the 'Calvin-istic' Duke of Somerset --
as the Regent of the young King of England (Edward VI) -- that 'the Church
of God will never preserve itself without a Catechism. For it is like seed
which keeps the good grain from dying out, and causes it to multiply -- from
age to age.... If you desire to build an edifice which shall be of long
duration and which shall not soon fall into decay -- see to it that the children
be educated by the hand of a good Catechism which, in short, teaches them the
meaning of true Christianity!' When
baptized infants, after later being catechized or 'taught' as grown children,
professed their faith in Christ -- they were to be admitted to the Lord's
Table. Said Calvin: 'As soon as their age and ability to understand will allow,
they yield themselves to Him as Disciples' alias 'taught ones.' Then, like the
Ethiopian eunuch of old, they too are to declare quite publicly: 'I believe
that Jesus Christ is the Son of God!' For, explains Calvin, 'everyone who does
not already have this as an adult -- boasts in vain of his Baptism as an
infant.' As Rev. Professor Dr. A.D. Pont has observed: 'It is clear that for Calvin the purpose of catechizing is to teach
children something so that they can go to the Lord's Table knowledgeably. In
catechizing -- children are instructed so that they can accept the Confession
of Faith just like and together with the Church as the Community of Faith'"
(p. 35).
Dr. Lee ends this piece with a
nice summary of its contents.
"In this
chapter, we have looked at Calvin's exegetical objections to Paedocommunion
from Genesis to Revelation. We saw he showed that the Patristic Church
catechized youth before Communion, and that he provided evidence of Patristic
'Confirmation' before first eucharizing at teenage. Calvin therefore rejected
the Early-Mediaeval error of Paedocommunion, as well as the Papist perversion
of pseudo-confirmation. To him, mediaeval sacramentalism mauled manumission He
fully refuted the Anabaptist Servetus' pseudopaedocommunionistic speciousness,
and crushed the Anabaptist Servetus's pseudo-paedocommunionism To Calvin,
Apostolic 'Admission to the Supper' needed restoring -- after letting covenant
children catechize from age10 till at least age 13. Wherever carnal, Calvin
wanted Communion Services be postponed. He developed the Geneva Catechism
for Communion Catechumens, and provided in his Ecclesiastical Ordinances that
covenant children must first complete their catechization before being admitted
to Communion. Calvin wrote
Anti-Romish tracts on 'True Confirmation.' He also advocated 'Teenage
Confirmation' while refuting that syncretism between inconsistent Lutheranism
and Romanism known as the German Interim. To Calvin, catechization was
necessary in order to understand and avoid the error of consubstantiation This
was developed in his polemics against the Gnesio- or Hyper-Lutherans Westphal
and Heshusius. It was also standardized in his own Catechism. Predictably,
Calvin approved of the French Hugenots' Communion Tokens as a good way of
fencing and guarding the sanctity of the Lord's Supper. His letter to the young Prince Henry of Navarre
stressed the importance of the ages between ten and teenage, and he insisted to
the Lord Protector of the young King Edward VI of England that the Church
cannot long thrive without Catechisms. For, as Calvin himself commented (on
Acts 8:37): 'As soon as their age and ability to understand will allow,'
Christ's covenant children are to 'yield themselves to Him as Disciples' alias
'taught ones.' Then, like the Ethiopian eunuch of old, they too are to declare
quite publicly: 'I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God!' For, explained
the genius of Geneva, 'everyone who does not already have this as an adult --
boasts in vain of his Baptism as an infant!'" (pp. 35-36).
Clearly, John Calvin's view,
which is characteristic of the Reformation position, is that everyone, including
baptized children, must be catechized before being allowed to partake of the
Lord's Supper. He was consciously and
decidedly opposed to paedocommunion. Paedocommunion is an anti-Reformation
practice. This book by Dr. Lee not only demonstrates how vigorously Calvin
opposed paedocommunion, but also gives contemporary Christians sound reasons
for opposing it today.
Opposing paedocommunion entails
that those who accept it should receive ecclesiastical discipline. This is likely the position that Calvin would have
taken. As Reg Barrow writes in "Calvin, Close Communion, and the Coming
Reformation" (http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualnls/CalvinCC.htm
),
"John Calvin
listed the doctrine of the sacraments as the third most important element, in
cataloguing his four major areas of concern, regarding Christianity and the
ecclesiastical Reformation of his day, writing, 'If it be inquired, then, by
what things chiefly the Christian religion has a standing existence amongst us,
and maintains its truth, it will be found that the following two not only
occupy the principal place, but comprehend under them all the other parts, and
consequently the whole substance of Christianity: this is, a knowledge, first,
of the mode in which God is duly worshipped; and, secondly, of the source from
which salvation is to be obtained. When these are kept out of view, though we
may glory in the name Christians, our profession is empty and vain. After these
come the sacraments and the government of the church...' (The Necessity of
Reforming the Church [Presbyterian
Heritage Publications, 1544, reprinted 1995], p. 15)."
Even more to the point, Barrow notes,
"it is a well documented fact that the Genevan Presbytery
of Calvin's day, in 1536, sought to excommunicate anyone who would not swear an
oath to uphold the Reformed doctrine as it was set forth in their Confession of
Faith. T.H.L. Parker writes, 'Since the evangelical faith had only
recently been preached in the city, and there were still many Romanists, the
ministers also urged excommunication on the grounds of failure to confess the
faith. The Confession of faith, which
all the citizens and inhabitants of Geneva... must promise to keep and to hold
had been presented to the Council on 10 November 1536. Let the members of the
Council be the first to subscribe and then the citizens, 'in order to recognize
those in harmony with the Gospel and those loving rather to be of the kingdom
of the pope than of the kingdom of Jesus Christ.' Those
who would not subscribe were to be excommunicated' (John Calvin:
A Biography, p. 63)."
Barrow provides further support for this by
pointing out,
"The 'Register
of the Council of 24' of Geneva notes as follows: '12 November 1537. It was
reported that yesterday the people who had not yet made their oath to the
reformation were asked to do so, street by street; whilst many came, many
others did not do so. No one came from the German quarter. It was decided
that they should be commanded to leave the city if they did not wish to swear
to the reformation' (Scribner, Bob
and Pamela Johnston. 1993. The Reformation in Germany and Switzerland, Cambridge University Press, p. 138)."
Samuel Rutherford also held
that those who are "unsound in faith" should be barred from the
Lord's Supper.
"Because the
Churches take not care, that Ministers be savoury and gracious; from Steermen
all Apostasie and rottenness begin. O if the Lord would arise and purge his
House in Scotland! As for Church-members, they ought to be holy; and though all
baptized be actu primo members,
yet such as remain habitually ignorant after admonition, are to be cast out,
and though they be not cast out certainly, as paralytick or rottened members
cannot discharge the functions of life: So those that are scandalous,
ignorant, malignant, unsound in faith, lose their rights of Suffrages in
election of Officers, and are to be debarred from the Seals" (Survey of the Survey, p. 373).
Although these latter citations are not a
part of Dr. Lee's book, they are pertinent because they show the logical
conclusion to be drawn from the lessons he provides in his book. That is, since paedocommunion is an unscriptural doctrine
and practice, those who hold to it must receive ecclesiastical discipline and
be barred from the Lord's Table.
If paedocommunionism is allowed to run
rampant in Reformed and Presbyterian churches, not only will any future
Reformation be set back for years (and even turned into anti-Reformation), but
countless children will reap the consequences of partaking unworthily of the
Lord's Supper (as will those who teach and practice this dangerous and
destructive heresy -- as the Lord makes known his displeasure upon those who
sow doctrinal tares in His fields). What a sad situation it is among those
who think they are obeying the Lord and being faithful in their duties toward
their children (by practicing paedocommunion), when in fact, they are actually
disobeying the Lord and bringing judgement upon themselves and their children
for the errors they teach and practice.
Lord willing this book will be used of God to
rescue many from the paedocommunion deception.

LEE, FRANCIS NIGEL
Calvin on Islam (2000)
There are two great
antichristian religious systems of deceit revealed in the book of revelation. The "great western antichrist" of Roman
Catholicism (Rev. 17 and 18) and the "great eastern antichrist" of
Islam (Rev. 9). This has been the majority position of historic Protestant
interpretation (Historicism) for centuries (though later writers often see this
with more clarity). Dr. Lee gives us evidence of this in Calvin and Islam, citing Calvin as follows,
" In our own day, indeed [1550], very many people
begin to waver -- when they consider the long
continued dispersion of the Church. As if this had not been regulated by the purpose of God!...
The pretext of the [preteristic] Romanists which they make in extenuation of the tyranny of their
idol [the Papacy] -- is that it was not possible for Christ to forsake His
bride. But here, the weak have an assurance on which to rest -- when they learn
that the disfigurement which they see in the
Church, has long since been foretold.
"The impudence
of the Romanists, on the other hand, is
clearly exposed. Because Paul declares that when
the World has been brought under the rule of Christ -- a defection will take
place....
"The minds of
[Romanizing] ancients were so bewitched -- that they believed [preteristically] that
Nero would be Antichrist! However, Paul
is not speaking of one individual -- but of a kingdom that was to be seized by
Satan, for the purpose of setting up a seat of abomination in the midst of
God's Temple. This we see accomplished in Popery.
"The defection has indeed spread more widely!
For, since Mohammed was an apostate,
he turned his followers, the Turks,
from Christ.... The sect of Mohammed was like a
raging overflow, which in its violence tore away about half of the Church.
It remained for [the Papal] Antichrist to infect with his poison the part which
was left."
Yet, in the words
the Lord Jesus shall slay' in Second Thessalonians 2:8 -- Calvin insists Paul
"predicted the destruction of the reign of
Antichrist.... He will be annihilated
by the Word of the Lord....
"Paul does not think that Christ will accomplish this in a single
moment.... Christ will scatter the darkness in which Antichrist will
reign, by the rays which He will emit before His
coming -- just as the sun, before becoming visible to us, chases away the
darkness of the night with its bright light.
Furthermore, Lee writes,
It does seem that
the fourth iron kingdom was in fact both
the pre-Papal
and the pre-Islamic
undivided Pagan Roman Empire,
as well as the later Western-Roman Papal and
the contemporaneous Eastern-Roman Islamic
Empire into which it then subdivided. Indeed, both "Mahomet" and "the Pope" -- as we have already seen -- Dr. Calvin
called "the two horns of Antichrist." Thus they correspond to the
two legs of the later Roman Empire -- Islam and the Papacy.
In fact, when the classic historicist
position is studied, the fulfillment in the case of Islam and Revelation
chapter nine is seen to be so striking and well attested that "even advocates of other approaches who are adamant in
their rejection of the historicist system of interpretation have admitted the
convincing nature of this particular identification" (Steve Gregg, commenting on Rev. 9:1-6 in Revelation:
Four Views, p. 176).
Here are just five examples of historicist
works (available from SWRB, at URLs below) which provide ample proof that the
locusts of Revelation nine are referring to Islam:

Faber (vol. 1, pp. 177-212; vol. 2, pp. 269-288) at http://www.swrb.com/catalog/f.htm
5. Dissertations on the Prophecies Which Have Remarkably Been
Fulfilled, and at this Time are Fulfilling in the World (2
volumes, 1817) by Thomas Newton (vol. 2, pp. 222-232) at http://www.swrb.com/catalog/n.htm
Given the prominent place in Scripture that
God apportions to revealing Islam as one of the
most significant antichristian forces in history (and in the light
of the rise and progress of Islam in our day), Dr. Lee has provided a
much-needed service to the Christian community by gathering together (into one
easy-reading book) the thoughts of one of the greatest Reformers, John Calvin, on one of the chief historical enemies of
the church of Christ and the souls of men.

LEE, FRANCIS NIGEL
Islam in the Bible (2000)
After the September 11, 2001, attacks on New
York and Washington, by terrorists who openly admit to advocating the murder of
innocent civilians and being motivated by their Islamic beliefs, the religion
of Islam has become the object of much attention. Islam
used to receive considerable attention from Protestant theologians who studied
eschatology. These theologians held to the view known as
"Historicism," and this was the classic (or historic) Protestant and
Reformed interpretation of prophecy. Attesting to this, Historicism is found in
all the major Protestant and Reformed creeds, confessions, and covenants (in
their unedited form, from the time of the Reformation), as well as among the
individual writings of the best Reformers. Moreover, many
Reformers considered the Papacy "the great Western Antichrist," and
Islam "the great Eastern Antichrist."
Although Historicism is the Scriptural view
of prophecy, it was eclipsed in the twentieth century by other (erroneous)
systems of interpretation, especially Dispensationalism, and to a much lesser
degree, Preterism. Both Futurism and Preterism,
as systems, originated with the Jesuits, to counter the Historicist eschatology
of the Reformation (cf. the three tape set "Preterism
Refuted" [under "Elliott, E.B." at http://www.swrb.com/catalog/E.htm ] and the free article "Apocalyptic
Interpretation" at http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualnls/ApocInt.htm ) for more on this point.
However, recent events, are now causing
modern Christians to take a more serious look at Islam, and its place in Bible
prophecy. Hopefully this renewed attention on Islam will also lead to renewed
attention on truly Biblical interpretation of prophecy. This book by the Dr. F.N. Lee will be a significant help to Christians
wanting to view eschatology Biblically, just as all the major Reformers did.
Dr. Lee himself notes the
historical significance of Historicist interpretation:
"We would
suggest, then, that the Book of Revelation itself is prima facie to be
understood as giving the really major events down through the centuries in
Church History. The vast majority of competent exegetes of the Book of
Revelation have interpreted it historicalistically, and neither preteristically
nor futuristically. Church History bears this out -- and so too does also
Secular History. To establish this, let us look at some of the writings of the two
greatest theologians of the Protestant Reformation -- ... Martin Luther and ...
John Calvin" (p. 13).
Considerable space would be
needed to sketch the overall Historicist interpretation of Revelation, but the
following quote from Thomas Goodwin gives a good example of it:
"'These two,
the Pope and the Turk, both enemies to Christ, thus succeeding in the [Roman]
empire and sharing the two parts of it between them -- we see....
Mohammedanism, under the Turk, tyranniseth in the one; and idolatry, under the
Pope, overspreads the other -- even as Heathenism had done over the whole
empire at first. And so Christ hath a new business of it yet....'Therefore He
hath seven vials, which contain the last plagues... to despatch the Pope and
the Turk and wholly root them out.... The plagues of these vials are the
contents of the 15th and 16th chapters. The first five vials do dissolve and by
degrees ruin the Pope's power in the west. Then the sixth vial breaks the power
of the Turk in the east -- so making way for the Jews (whom He means to bring
into the fellowship of His Kingdom).... Both the Turkish and Popish party do
together join, using their utmost forces (and together with them all opposite
kings of the whole World) against the Christians, both of the east and west --
who, when the Jews are come in and converted [Romans 11:25-32] do make up a
mighty party in the World.... '"(p. 15).
Similarly, Dr. Lee brings in
quotes from Jonathan Edwards:
"In his
magnificent book A History of the Work of Redemption, Princeton's first
President ... Jonathan Edwards explains: 'The two great works of the Devil
which he... wrought against the Kingdom of Christ, are... his Anti-christian
[Romish or Papal] and Mahometan [Muslim or Islamic] kingdoms -- which have
been, and still are, two kingdoms of great extent and strength. Both together
swallow... up the Ancient Roman Empire; the [Papal] kingdom of Antichrist
swallowing up the Western Empire, and Satan's Mahometan kingdom the Eastern
Empire.... In the Book of Revelation [chapters 16 to 20]...it is in the
destruction of these that the glorious victory of Christ at the introduction of
the glorious times of the Church, will mainly consist....'" (p. 19).
It's not a coincidence that virtually all of
the major Protestant interpreters from the time of the Reformation until at
least the late nineteenth century held to the Historicist view of prophecy and
that many also pointed to various portions of the Word of God as prophesying
the rise and fall of Islam (see Islam in
Revelation: An Historic Look at Protestant Eschatological Thought on the Rise
and Fall of Islam [under "Elliott, E.B." at http://www.swrb.com/catalog/E.htm ]). They all agreed on this because it is so clearly
the proper Biblical view. And it is especially important for Christians to
regain this perspective in light of the current onslaught of a fierce and
merciless Islam against the West.

LEE, FRANCIS NIGEL
John Owen Represbyterianized
This book chronicles John Owen's
thought as he matured and ultimately re-embraced the Presbyterianism of his
youth. However, it is also much more
-- being a fine introduction to biblical
Presbyterianism!
In a fascinating manner John Owen Represbyterianized begins
tracing Presbyterianism from the Heavenly Session
in the Trinity. It continues by moving
from the Presbyterianism of the antediluvian Patriarchs to a survey of Presbyterian
church government as it is revealed throughout the Old Testament.
It then demonstrates how the "Older Testament Presbyterianism continues as
Christian Presbyterianism" in the New Testament (all the while providing
an excellent historical overview and summary of Presbyterianism as it is found
throughout the complete inspired record of Scripture).
Dr. Lee also provides many
exegetical proofs for Presbyterianism while furnishing numerous insights into
how the original languages of the Bible set forth the Presbyterian system of
church government.
This is all accomplished in an
easy-reading format which even a young Christian should be able to understand
-- while, at the same time, offering profound divine truths that will be much
appreciated by those more skilled and mature in the use of their biblical
swords.
Dr. Lee writes,
The
purpose of this essay is to demonstrate that Britain's great Puritan
Theologian... John Owen, was essentially not a Congregationalist but a
Presbyterian. He first pastored a Presbyterian Church. On his deathbed, he
re-affirmed Presbyterianism.
The
depresbyterianized Owen later re-embraced Presbyterianism... Dr. Owen, 1616-83,
was quite the greatest alleged Congregationalist and certainly one of the most
thorough Theologians Britain has ever produced. Educated at Oxford, he first
pastored a Presbyterian Church -- in 1643, the year the Westminster Assembly
itself was convened. After reading a book by the American John Cotton, Owen
inwardly embraced Congregationalism.
In his next parish,
he seceded from Presbyterianism... the system many in the Puritan Parliament
and most at the presbyterianizing Westminster Assembly were then trying to
promote in the wake of The Solemn League and Covenant -- for Reformation and
Defence of Religion; the Honour and Happiness of the King; and the Peace and
Safety of the three Kingdoms of Scotland, England, and Ireland -- taken and subscribed several times by King Charles
and by all ranks in the said three kingdoms.
At the termination
of the Monarchy and the establishment of the Commonwealth in 1649, Cromwell the
Congregationalist appointed Owen Vice-Chancellor at Oxford. He became the chief
architect of the Cromwellian State Church, and helped compose the
congregationalistic Savoy Declaration of Faith in 1658 (intended to replace the presbyterial Westminster
Confession of Faith and its chapter
31:1-5). Subsequent to the termination of the Commonwealth and the Restoration
of the Monarchy in 1660, Owen was ejected from Oxford.
After congregationalistically
pastoring a 'gathered church' in his own home and elsewhere for the next two
decades -- at the end of his life he certainly
moved back toward and seems actually to have re-embraced Presbyterianism.
How could it be otherwise -- with Owen constantly improving his own infant
baptism, in the Name of the Triune God (Who is Himself a Presbytery)? See Westminster
Larger Catechism, Q. & A. 167!
Thus the proto-Presbyterian... John Owen -- after a lapse into
Congregationalism -- thereafter increasingly re-presbyterianized...
The Final Represbyterianization of... John Owen
Presbyterian Baxter
was so impressed by words like these in Owen's Catechism, that he wrote to him... proposing union between the
Congregationalists and the Presbyterians. To that, Dr. Owen himself replied
(I:cix-cxxi)...
"I judge your
proposals worthy of great consideration.... I see no reason why all the true
disciples of Christ might not, upon these and the like principles, condescend
in love unto the practical concord and agreement -- which not one of them dare
deny to be their duty to aim at."
Owen
himself (Works XVI:2) told several men that he could readily join with
Presbytery the way it was exercised in Scotland. Moreover, historian Wodrow in his own [1716] Analecta (1842 ed. 2:263 & 2:309) records:
"Blackwell
tells...he had this account of Owen at his death from persons who were with
him... that he expressed himself very much in favour of Presbyterian
Government, and said he was persuaded that Presbytery was the way to God....
"Redpath told
me...he visited Dr. Owen on his deathbed, and Presbytery and Episcopacy came to
be discoursed of.... The Doctor said how he had
seen his mistake as to the Independent way, and declared to him a day or two
before his death that after his utmost search into the Scriptures and
antiquity, he was now satisfied that Presbytery was the way Christ had
appointed in His New Testament Church."
Owen died in 1683.
One of his most important tracts, The True Nature of a Gospel Church and its
Government, was published
posthumously six years later in 1689. Rightly, the later congregationalistic
editor W.H. Goold admitted in his own 'Prefatory Note' thereto (VXI:2) that
because "of some statements in the following treatise...it has been
gravely argued that the author returned to the Presbyterianism of his early
days before he died." Those statements are found especially in Owen's
chapter on 'the Communion of Churches.'
Let us summarize
Owen's final conclusions in his own words. In his essay Duty of Pastors and
People Distinguished (XIII:39), he
wrote:
"The
principles and rules of that church government from which...I desire not to
wander, are...called presbyterial or synodical -- in opposition to prelatical
or diocesan on the one side, and that which is commonly called independent or
congregational on the other."
And another little taste of Dr. Lee's
findings,
...the
above-mentioned text Acts 15:2-6 records the beginning of the deliberations of
the General Assembly in Jerusalem, in answer to its receipt of the reference
from the Presbytery of Antioch. This is to be found just prior to its
formulation of binding decrees to be kept by "the Churches" in all of
"the cities" of Antioch and Cilicia and Syria where Congregations had
been established. Acts 13:1f; 14:23-27; 15:1-41; 16:4-5.
Owen states
(XV:530) "it follows that in case any Church [singular]...do give offence
unto other Churches [plural], those other Churches may require an account from
them; admonish them of their faults; and withhold communion from them in case
they persist in the error of their way.... Hence also it follows that those
that are rightly and justly censured ... in any Church [singular]... ought to
be rejected by all Churches [plural] whatever...because of their mutual
communion.... In case there had been any difficulty or doubt in the procedure
of the Church [singular], they would have taken the advice of these Churches
[plural] with whom they were obliged to consult."
Don't miss this one, it
will save you hours of study and research while also providing many valuable
insights (on church government) that would be otherwise unavailable to those
who do not read the original biblical languages. Furthermore, the
story of John Owen's return to Presbyterianism is extremely interesting and
very well documented and easily worth the price of this book alone!

Sion's Plea Against the Prelacie, An Appeal To the Parliament
Tried in his absence by the Star-chamber court, Leighton, a Scots divine, was
sentenced to pay 10,000 pounds, to be degraded from holy orders, to have his
ears cut off, his nose slit, to be branded on the cheek with S.S. (sower of
sedition), to be whipped, and to stand in that condition in the pillory and
endure what amounted to perpetual imprisonment: all this for daring to write
this book against Laud's popish ceremonies and against prelatic Church
government. He calls prelacy "antichristian" and declaims vehemently
against the canons and ceremonies, adding that "the church has her laws
from Scripture, and that no king may make laws for the house of God." This
virulent attack on the bishops, "an appeal to political presbyterianism to
take the sword in hand," was published anonymously in Amsterdam in 1629.
It is an extremely rare work. Leighton was loosed from prison, his fine
cancelled, and he was voted 6,000 pounds in compensation when the Long
Parliament released him in 1640.

How May We Graciously Improve Those Doctrines and Providences Which
Transcend Our Understandings?
This is one sample sermon from the Puritan Sermons (six volumes) which were the
"The Morning Exercises at Cripplegate," listed below. Based on Romans
11:33: "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!
how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!", this
sermon tackles one of the most trying aspects of the life of faith (i.e.
understanding and resting in the ways of God, even when His path of
righteousness so transcends our understanding as to be incomprehensible to the
finite human mind.)

what things chiefly the Christian religion has a standing amongst us, and

the principal place, but comprehend under them all the other parts, and

of the right way to worship God; and secondly of the source from which salvation
is to be sought. When these are kept out of view, though we may glory in the

John Knox
and the Church of England: His Work in Her Pulpit and His Influence Upon Her
Liturgy, Articles, and Parties (1875)
"The 'three mighties' in
the army of the Reformation, are undoubtedly Luther, Calvin, and Knox. Each of
the three has his appropriate place and his peculiar work. Luther cleared the
ground; Calvin exhibited the plan of the new edifice; Knox was the workman who
erected it." (Wylie, Ter-centenary of the Scottish Reformation, p. 73,
this book is listed under "Cunningham" in this catalogue). Here
Lorimer gives us an important look at a major chapter in the life of Christ's
Reformation "workman," as founded upon several important papers of
Knox never before published.
Kyle elaborates: "After the publication of Laing's collection, three
smaller Knoxian writings were discovered. In 1875 these tracts were reprinted
as part of Peter Lorimer's book John Knox and the Church of England. Scholarly criticism has verified Knox's
authorship of these articles" (The Mind of John Knox, p. 14). Lorimer himself says that
"[t]he amount of fresh biographical and historical material supplied by
these papers is so very considerable that it appeared to warrant and suggest a
re-writing of the English chapter of Knox's life." Furthermore, he
continues, that though Knox is too often thought of only in connection
"with his work and success as the Reformer of Scotland," it should be
remembered that "a large portion of the best and most energetic part of
his life was spent in England, and among Englishmen out of England." Written as a Monograph to
"make larger and freer use of Knox's own writings, in the way of culling
their most personal and characteristic passages," Lorimer intimates,
"I wished, as much as possible, to let Knox himself be seen and heard in
my book." Kevin Reed, one of the foremost Knox scholars alive today, calls
this work "an excellent account of Knox's ministry in England" (John Knox the Forgotten
Reformer, p. 19.

Large
crowds of people often gathered for these expositions. Volume
five... is the best compilation of Puritan systematic theology ever written,
but unfortunately is often overlooked in Puritan studies.... This six volume set represents Puritan preaching at its
best... Puritan pastors treasured the
full scope of God's counsel.... (They) stove for... excellence. They also made
their sermons practical enough to answer the questions of listeners in a thoroughly
scriptural manner.

Modern Reprints, pp. 637-639.
Volumes
vary in length from 624 to 804 pages and cover a great number of topics that
are essential to the Puritan view of God, the world and the Christian life.
The
Preface notes, "This celebrated collection of
useful and orthodox theology consists... of practical as well as doctrinal
discourses, preached by some of the most eminent divines of the 17th century,
and published at irregular intervals between the years 1660 and 1691."
Volume
six, "The Morning Exercises against Popery; or the principal Errors of the Church of Rome
detected and confuted... has always been deemed a standard book on that
great controversy," which even in
that day was "recently revived... Two of the volumes here described were
published prior to the year 1662; consequently all the authors of the sermons
in those volumes were Conformists up to that time; and though the majority of

The Pope of Rome Is Antichrist.
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there

that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing
himself that he is God. Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told
you these things? And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in
his time. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth
will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be
revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall
destroy with the brightness of his coming: even him, whose coming is after the
working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all
deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received
not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.--2 Thessalonians ii. 3--10

A Clear Vindication of the Principles and Practices of Christopher Love,
Since His Trial Before, and Condemnation By, the High Court of Justice. (1808
edition)
Love, a staunch Covenanted Presbyterian, was executed by the English army
during Cromwell's usurpation -- or as John Gerstner writes, "he was
martyred for the zeal of the Cromwellian Independents." Gerstner
continues, "at the end of the 20th century, the Protestant church has
fewer Christopher Loves and needs them more. Though he died at 33 years of age,
his wisdom is for the ages, especially the impending 'Third Christian
Millennium'... Christopher Love made all the actors on the religious scene of
his day more or less his enemies because he told the truth across the board. As
I said above, we can use a few more Loves for the 21st century... Love was a jure
divino (divine right) Presbyterian... With Samuel Rutherford in
Scotland, Gisbert Voetius in Holland, and Christopher Love in England, this was
the gold age for church order, not for top-down (Episcopacy) or bottom-up
(Independency) but top-down and bottom-up (Presbyterianism). That a stickler
for regulations would be the devout pietist of the letters here included, is
instructive. High Calvinistic theology, meticulous discipline, and heart
religion were providentially and sanctifyingly mixed together and out came
Christopher Love. He had to die young" (from the Foreword to Don Kistler's
A Spectacle Unto God: The Life and Death of Christopher Love, pp. viii-ix). After Love's execution, the
Presbyterian Thomas Manton (a close friend of Love's) ignored threats by
Cromwell's sectarian soldiers (who said they would shoot him if he preached at
Love's funeral) to preach Love's funeral sermon anyway (and he was not shot).
This book helps exhibit the wickedness of Cromwell's administration, exposing
Cromwell as the Judas of the Solemn League and Covenant. It also demonstrates
the faithfulness of God to his covenanted, elect remnant -- especially to those
martyred for maintaining second Reformation attainments. The subtitle, picking
up where the title left off, further explains the contents of this title. It
reads: "Also, His Grounds and Reasons of giving in a Narrative, and the
lawfulness of the Matter and Titles of his Petitions. Together with a
Declaration of his Judgment concerning Cromwell's unlawful Invasion of the
Kingdom of Scotland. Likewise, Mr. Love's Speech and Prayer, on the Scaffold at
Tower Hill, upon the day of his Death, and his last Sermon." Love's speech
and prayer just before his execution exhibit what was at the heart of the
second Reformation, as well as what was on the lips of its martyrs. "I
die cleaving to all those oaths, vows and covenants, and protestations, that
were imposed by the two houses of parliament, as owning them, and in dying with
my judgment for them: to the protestation, the vow and the covenant, the solemn
league and covenant. And this I tell you all, I had rather die a covenant
keeper, than live a covenant breaker" (p. 70). Also included
here are the heart-wrenching letters that passed between Love and his wife
leading up to his state sanctioned murder, a letter from Love to one of the
witnesses against him, and several letters to Love from Dr. Drake and other of
his then fellow-suffers.112 pages.

LOVE, CHRISTOPHER
The Dejected Soul's Cure
One of the things that is
common to true believers is a sense of unworthiness because of sin. We struggle with assurance because we look at ourselves
and see excessive, remaining corruption. This may cause us to doubt both
ourselves and God's love for us. Here is an insightful handling of these
matters by one of the most pastoral of the Puritans. Love's
conclusion is that the great enemy of our souls will do all he can to take our
eyes off of our Savior, even if that means an over-preoccupation with sin and
self. He asks:
- When are God's
people too cast down for sin?
- Why are wicked
men not cast down for sin?
- How can God's
people keep from becoming too dejected?
Love then gives Scriptural
guidelines to recover a sense of God's love. He shows us things that unsettle the soul of a child of God, and gives
comfort to those who are convicted. He also sets forth truth that will convict
those who may be falsely comforted. This is important reading for anyone
who longs to be more sanctified and satisfied.
There is also another work by Christopher
Love at the end of this book called A Treatise
of Angels. It was appendixed to the original edition of The
Dejected Soul's Cure, so we have kept
the two works together. 304 pages (SDG fyler).

Cases of Conscience answered in the Course of the Work. (1651, 1792 edition)
Classic Puritan preaching showing why the Puritans were masters of
encouragement, especially to young and weak Christians with the smallest
measures of grace. Here Love points out from numerous Scriptures how God
Himself encourages even the weakest of His children! Sermon #1 includes a preface
by several Westminster divines. These 16 sermons, along with much more by Love,
can be obtained in book form at the link below this summary. There is also good
material here to counter the errors of N.T. Wright ("New Perspective on

The Soul's Cordial (1653)
Part one is titled "Teaching How To Be Eased of the Guilt of Sin" and
consists of 191 pages. Part two, "The Saints Advantage, By Christ's
Ascension," deals (in 194 pages) with our Lord's words comforting
"his disciples both against their fears of persecution in the world, as
also against their sorrows" (p. 1). Many subjects are touched upon,
including numerous very helpful practical applications following from the
assurance of the believer's freedom from the guilt of sin, the truth of
Christ's ascension, and the comfort and joy that both these topics bring to the
followers of the Lamb. Indexed.

LOVE, CHRISTOPHER
Taking Heaven By Storm
(5 Sermons on 4 Cassettes or 5 Videos)
Read
by Elder Lyndon Dohms, these sermons are taken from Love's Zealous Christian
Taking Heaven By Holy Violence ($7.98
P, $19.00 HP). Love was a Covenanted English Presbyterian who was beheaded by
Cromwell's soldiers. Ultimately, Love was executed for
His faithfulness to the cause of Christ and the Solemn League and Covenant
-- a covenant that Cromwell (who we call "the Judas of the Covenant")
swore and then broke repeatedly. Portions of the
testimony Love gave just before he was martyred preface these sermons.
The sermons themselves are classic examples of Puritan preaching, dealing
with the Christian life at various levels not often heard in modern preaching. Here Love teaches us to be moderate in the
indifferent things of this world, but not in the things of the Lord -- as we
are exhorted to be on fire for the kingdom of heaven. This set contains five
sermons, with two sermons included on the last cassette.

With Zeal and How to Pray with Importunity." Love's sermons on Matthew
11:12, "And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of
heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force" and Luke

Bones of Contention: A Creationist Assessment of Human Fossils (1992)
Henry Morris, president of the Institute for Creation Research, writes,
"This is the most complete and accurate critique of the fossils of the
so-called "ape-man." The myth of human evolution is completely
demolished. The last chapter, repudiating the compromising views of many modern
evangelicals on this subject, is illuminating. Lubenow has made an invaluable
contribution to scientific biblical creationism." "Based entirely on

Infant Baptism: Its Nature & Objects (1856)
This book, of 77 pages, assumes that infants are the proper subjects of baptism
and that sprinkling or pouring of water is a Scriptural mode. It answers three
major questions. What is the use or meaning of infant Baptism? What good
purpose does it serve? What spiritual benefit does it confer? The object is
simply "to provide a statement which might aid parents in understanding
the nature and obligations of Baptism, and thus contribute to their acceptable
and profitable observance of the sacrament when administered to their
children."

Principal Whyte calls this "a masterly treatise," which "will
open the eyes of even well-read people." He further notes that
"(e)very one of the 31 covenants here discussed has a history of the first
importance to all... and specially so at the present time." The author
writes, "(a)ll that is attempted is to present the texts of the Covenants,
to set forth the events which led to the framing and subscribing of each, and
also to examine some of the results which followed." One covenant,
"The Succession Band or Covenant" (1599) is believed to be published
for the first time in this book.

Characteristics of the Witnessing Church (c. 1840)
The witnessing Church, engaged in battle during the 1260 years of apostasy,
fights with the devil and his angels. She is the true Reformation church; she
is the "women in the wilderness". But "Who is she that looketh
forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an
army with banners?" (Song 6:10). What are the marks of this host? How will
she be known? What is distinctive about her as opposed to the whore of Babylon
and her harlot daughters? These questions and many more, probing the nature of
the true church (in contrast to the false church), are answered in this
fascinating and edifying article. Robert Lusk was a founding member of the
Reformed Presbytery, who, "together with David Steele erected the Reformed
Presbytery upon true covenanting principles when the RP Synod made it clear
that they would not be reclaimed," writes Dodson (for an interesting
account of this story see our rare bound photocopy by the Reformed Presbytery, A
Short Vindication of Our Covenanted Reformation. Excerpted from the Original
Covenanter and Contending Witness magazine
(volumes 1:16-2:4). They don't write them like this anymore!

"This, therefore, is also essentially necessary
and wholesome for Christians to know: that God foreknows nothing by
contingency, but that He forsees, purposes, and does all things according to
His immutable, eternal, and infallible will" (Martin Luther, The
Bondage of the Will
[Translated by Henry Cole with preface by Henry Atherton. In the Introduction:
The Sovereignty of God], Sec. IX, p. 38).
LUTHER, MARTIN
The Bondage of the Will (tenth printing 1998)
The Bondage
of the Will is fundamental to
an understanding of the primary doctrines of the Reformation. In these pages,
Luther gives extensive treatment to what he saw as the heart of the gospel.
Free will was no academic question to Luther; the whole gospel of the grace of
God, he believed, was bound up with it and stood or fell according to the way
one decided it... This is the greatest piece of writing that came from Luther's
pen. In its vigour of language, its profound theological grasp, and the grand
sweep of its exposition, it stands unsurpassed among Luther's writings (front
and back cover).
Luther recognized this book as
his most important work and even said that if all his other books perished, he
would hope that this one, along with his Small Catechism, would be the only ones to remain. As noted above, this is one
of the most important books of the early Reformation, for it deals with what
Luther saw to be the heart of the Gospel.
Luther here refutes the Romish notion of
"free will" in man and upholds the absolute sovereignty of God in the
salvation of sinners -- as well as justification by faith alone. Luther
clearly saw the issue of free will as the primary cause of his separation from
Rome.
In this book he replied to the Roman Catholic
scholar, Erasmus, and his diatribe The Freedom of the Will. Though disagreeing with just about everything else
Erasmus wrote, Luther commended Erasmus for recognizing
the crux of the matter at issue between Rome and the Bible believers,
the debate over "free will." In this regard Luther wrote,
that unlike all
the rest, you alone have attacked the real issue, the essence of the matter in
dispute (i.e. man's so-called free-will--RB)... You and you alone saw, what was
the grand hinge upon which the whole turned, and therefore you attacked the
vital part at once; for which, from my heart, I thank you.
"This book
is most needful at the present day," noted Atherton in 1931,
for "the teachings of many so-called
Protestants are more in accordance with the Dogmas of the Papists, or the ideas
of Erasmus, than with the Principles of the Reformers; they are more in harmony
with the Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent than with the Protestant or
Reformed Confessions of Faith."
It is easy to see how a lack of
doctrinal and historical study is leading many into serious compromise with the
false ecumenical apostasy espoused by Rome and other idolatrous beliefs which
cry up man's ability to save himself (as with Arminianism) and to devise his
own methods of worship (as with those that oppose the Reformation's regulative
principle of worship in favor of their own will worship). In this area, many "Protestants," even
now, bow down to Rome's humanistic, anti-Christian idol of free will.
It is our hope that God will use Luther's
classic to give you the strength to remain faithful to His Word; this being a
great place to start a new Reformation, for as the translators write concerning
this book, "Nowhere does Luther come
closer, either in spirit or in substance to the Paul of Romans and Galatians."

LUTHER, MARTIN
A Commentary on Saint Paul's Epistle to the Galatians
"Luther had
a very sharp and satirical style; but his Commentary
on the Epistle to the Galatians was his
favorite work, which he used to call his wife, his Catherine de Bore...
His favorite
doctrine was justification by faith alone, and not by works, moral, legal, or
evangelical; but we must do him the justice to observe, that he perpetually
inculcated the absolute necessity of good works. According to him, a man is
justified only by faith; but he cannot be justified without works; and where
those works are not to be found, there is assuredly no true faith...
His
followers called themselves Lutherans, much against his mind; but they recede
from him in many things, as may be seen by their writings...
Melancthon
says, 'I am a logician; and Justus Jonas is an orator; but Luther is good at
everything: the wonder of mankind; for whatever he says, or writes, it
penetrates the heart, and makes a lasting impression." (Excerpts from "Life of Luther," in
Luther's Commentary on... Galatians, p. lxx).
Includes: "The Life of Luther and a
Complete... History of the Times in Which He Lived" (76 pages). The complete
book is made up of 576 pages.

LUTHER, MARTIN
Luther's Small Catechism Developed and Explained (1893)
"Sturmius
says, that he saw a letter written by Luther to Wolfgang Capito, in which he
affirmed, that scarce any of his writings pleased
himself, except his (Small--RB) Catechism, and his book De servo
arbitrio (The Bondage of the Will--RB), or 'Free-will a Slave'" ("The Life of
Martin Luther" in Luther's Commentary on... Galatians, p. lxxvi, see resource 10 above). Luther also taught
that "lay people who refuse to learn (the
catechism--RB) should not be admitted to the Sacrament, and fathers must insist
that children learn to recite these basics" (Oxford
Encyclopedia of the Reformation, vol.
1, p. 276). Originally prepared and published by the General Synod of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in the United States. 130 pages.

"This collection of... CDs is a truly astounding accomplishment.
There is nothing like this available to the ordinary Christian on the whole
face of the earth.
Now, for the first time ever, ordinary Christians can have direct and near
effortless access to the very cream of Puritan and Reformed, as well as
Covenanter, literature... What they used to say of the Puritan John Flavel's
preaching, can be said of these CDs: they are 'hissing hot'! ... more" (emphases added).

Reformation History Library,
Version 2 on
CD-ROM
Did you ever wonder what the Reformation was really about? Are you aware of the
sacrifices that many men and women made in the 16th century in their stand for
the truth of Scripture and the Lordship of the Lord Jesus Christ? Why were
these sacrifices made? What drove these believers to sacrifice their
belongings, homes and eventually their lives, all in the name of the Reformed
faith and unswerving faithfulness to the Lord Jesus Christ? Many brave men
and women where tortured and died at the hands of the Roman Catholic Antichrist
during the Reformation and this CD will give you a look at the truths that
these brave martyrs (witnesses) stood for -- even to the shedding of blood in
resisting sin. We need to understand the
sacrifices that these noble witnesses for Christ made, as we reap the fruit of
their faithfulness today, lest they and the teaching they maintained be
forgotten and history repeats itself once again. Thus, we are excited to
announce the release of the Reformation History Library Version 2
(less a few of the selections included). The Reformation History Library is the most exhaustive collection of books written
about this critical time in the history of the world. The Reformation
History Library will provide the reader
with new insight and information that is not available on any other CD package.
There are over 50 books and 650+ graphic illustrations that depict the history
of the Reformation era on this CD. If you are interested in the finest
collection of Reformation history information available on one CD, now is the

reading the... Reformed CDs I purchased. I must say, there is nothing like

LUTHER, MARTIN
The Prophecies of the
Incomparable Dr. Martin Luther, Concerning the Downfall of the Pope of Rome, and
the Subversion of the German Empire, to be Over-run by the Armies of the Turks.
Together with the many Reasons that he giveth for it. (1664)
A collection of Luther's prophecies (and
prophecies about him by others) and teachings in which he "foretold those
sad events which should fall upon Rome and the Empire of Germany, unless they
would forsake their sins." (preface). "These prophecies... have been
carefully collected out of the book of Dr. Martin Luther entitled Colloquia
Mensalia... The book is admirable for
instruction and reproof; the prophecies are many, and some of them already
accomplished." (Idem.). This
book also includes a short sketch of Luther's life, Luther's admonition to the
Germans how they ought to make war against the Turks, how and why the Scripture
teaches that the office of the Papacy is the Antichrist, Luther's expounding
the prophecy of the prophet Daniel (ch. 11) concerning Antichrist and much
more. 47 pages.

Martin Luther Bible of 1534
Complete Facsimile Edition (in German)
Martin Luther's Bible, first printed in 1534, was not only the
first complete German publication of the Bible but also a major event in the
history of Christianity. Luther's
revolutionary translation, very modern in vernacular and interpretation, made
the Bible accessible to laypeople for the first time in history and gave new
life to Protestantism (the religion of the Bible).
The
Luther Bible remains the most widely used version in the Germanic world today.
This sumptuous reprint of this seminal book includes both the Old and New
Testaments, separated into two volumes totaling over 1800 pages. The complete Luther Bible has been meticulously
reproduced from a rare colored copy of the original.
Careful
attention has been paid to Lucas Cranach's woodcuts and elaborate ornaments,
which are printed in color and gold so as to be perfectly faithful to the
original.
Contained
in a third volume is Stephan Fuessel's introduction, providing an English overview of Luther's life, a discussion of
the significance of his bible, and detailed descriptions of the illustrations.

By What Scriptural Rules May Catechising Be So Managed, As That It May
Become Most Universally Profitable (1674, reprinted 1844)
Based on "Train up," or catechise, "a child in the way he should
go," or in his way: "and When he is old, he will not depart from
it" (Prov. 22:6). Shows that there are several texts of Scripture from
which the learned conclude that this mode of Catechising was used in the
apostles' days, and by the apostles themselves and their immediate successors;
and this in imitation of the Jews who had "a form of knowledge and of the
truth in the law," (Rom. 2:20), out of which they instructed the ignorant,
and taught babes. Thus, the apostle had given the Romans a "form of
doctrine"; (Rom. 5:17); and to Timothy "a form of sound words; (2
Tim. 1:13); "a form of sound words," which contained "the
principles of the doctrine of Christ," and the first principles of the
oracles of God;" six whereof are distinctly mentioned, Heb. 5:12; 6:1,2.
Proves how deeply parents and ministers are obliged to this duty, what the duty
is, and how it is best performed.
