"I received it (the
Puritan Hard Drive - ed.) yesterday and am blown away by it!
It is simple to set up and
there is a tremendous amount of material available that will last me for years
as I go through it all.
The search tools are, by themselves, well worth the price of the Puritan Hard Drive. It makes finding authors, topics and documents incredibly easy and fast. (The speed itself is amazing!) I also find the ability to copy from any of the (searchable - ed.) PDFs and paste into whatever .doc I happen to have open to be extremely useful.
I'm also glad to see that there are audio sermons/teachings (MP3s - ed.), as well as WMVs (videos - ed) from a variety of speakers and preachers as this provides a well-rounded approach to my own theology.
I've downloaded the entire drive to one of my computers that can handle it, and have it hooked up to a laptop.
The
Puritan Hard Drive is a tremendous asset to my
library and a huge time-saver for my own learning, preaching, teaching
and counseling.
Thank you ever so much for
doing this."

MACHEN, J. GRESHAM
New Testament Greek for Beginners (1923)
A
standard text for learning Greek. "This
textbook is intended primarily for students who are beginning the study of the
Greek Testament either without any previous acquaintance with the Greek
language or with an acquaintance so imperfect that a renewed course
of elementary instruction is needed... The New Testament usage will here be
presented without any reference to Attic Prose... The book is an instruction
book, and not a descriptive grammar. Since it is
an instruction book, everything in it is made subservient to the imparting of a
reading acquaintance with the language... The effort is made here to
enter upon these explanations which the fifteen years' experience of the author
in teaching New Testament Greek has shown to be essential... The vocabularies
have been limited to words which are very common in the New Testament..."

MACKENZIE, ROBERT
John Brown of Haddington (1918)
This book of 320 pages covers
the life of one of the most important Scottish Presbyterian ministers of the
eighteenth century,
John Brown of Haddington. He was born
in 1722, and by the age of thirteen he was an orphan, living in poverty. He
became a herd-boy, watching sheep to earn his living. However, he had a deep
interest in the things of God, and set out to educate himself in the original
languages of the Bible. He taught himself Greek,
and then went to a book shop to buy a Greek New Testament. The bookseller said
he didn't think Brown could read it, and some University professors who were in
the shop asked Brown about himself. "Then one of them, not unlikely Francis
Pringle, then Professor of Greek, asked the bookseller to bring a Greek New
Testament, and, throwing it down on the counter, said, 'Boy, if you can read
that book, you shall have it for nothing.' He took it up eagerly, read a
passage to the astonishment of those in the shop, and marched out with his
gift, so worthily won, in triumph" (pp. 34-35).
Brown was able to teach
himself not only Greek, but Latin and Hebrew as well. Some young men in the vicinity who were studying for
the ministry became jealous of this poor herd-boy who had little formal
education but was so advanced in the study of languages. Thus a rumour was
spread that John Brown had received his knowledge of the languages from Satan
himself! This rumour spread, and stuck with him for years to come, causing him
much anguish. (Interestingly, one of the fellows who helped spread this slander
was a licentiate who was found guilty of unworthy conduct and deprived of his
licence to preach about the same time that Brown himself was licensed).
Brown subsequently became a pedlar, and then
a soldier fighting against "the Pretender," Prince Charles Stuart,
who unsuccessfully tried to achieve power with the support of Highland troops.
Subsequent to that brief war, Brown became a schoolmaster, and finally a
divinity student in the Secession church. After successful completion of his
studies, he was called to be a pastor in the town of Haddington. It was there that he spent much of his time writing the
books for which he became famous.
Among his better known works are The Self-Interpreting Bible, The Christian Journal, A Dictionary of the Holy Bible, A General History of the Christian Church,
The Psalms of David in Metre (his notes on the
Psalms), The Absurdity and
Perfidy of all Authoritative Toleration of Gross Heresy, Blasphemy, Idolatry,
and Popery in Britain (including his defense of the continuing obligation of
the Solemn League and Covenant), and
The Harmony of Scripture Prophecies.
Brown was a stalwart for many important
points of Biblical truth in his day, but his work is of more value today than
ever before. Read this book to be encouraged about how God can take a poor,
uneducated farm boy, and make him into one of the great spiritual leaders of
his day.

MACLEAN, WILLIAM
Spurgeon: "Free will has carried many souls to hell
but never a soul to heaven."
A Jesuit: "Now we have planted the Sovereign Drug
Arminianism, OUR FOUNDATION IS ARMINIANISM."
Rous: "Arminianism is the very essence of Popery."
Toplady: "The charge on which many of the Protestant
martyrs were burnt at the stake was that they held to the doctrine of
predestination and rejected the Arminian and Popish doctrine of
free-will."
"It is often alleged that Arminianism and Calvinism only
differ in that the former chiefly stresses man's responsibility and the latter
lays all the weight upon Divine Sovereignty. This is not correct. The Arminian
does stress man's responsibility to the exclusion of the sovereignty of God,
and this is a fruitful cause of more than one error. The man, on the other
hand, who stresses the sovereignty of God to the exclusion of man's
responsibility is a hyper-Calvinist and is in error on this aspect of truth
just as surely as the Arminian. The true Calvinist lays stress on both
doctrines as they are unfolded in the inspired and infallible Word of God"
(Foreword).
"All the sects which have sprung up in these
latter times… Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, Pentecostalists,
Mormons, Christadelphians, Cooneyites, etc., have all in common, the fatal lie
of free willism. It is Satan's sovereign drug, which causes the soul to sleep in
delusion, & the end of such delusion is death."

The Cameronian Philosopher: Alexander Shields
The preface notes, "Much literature has been called forth by the
Covenanting movement in Scotland, and my sole reason for adding another volume
to the library of Covenanting history and biography is that one of the greatest
of the Covenanting leaders has been allowed to sink into a quite unmerited
oblivion. Alexander Shields, who was after the execution of James Renwick the
acknowledged leader of the Cameronian remnant, was one of the most picturesque
figures in the Scotland of his day... he lived dangerously and died young; and
it is indeed strange that no biography of this remarkable man has yet been
attempted... He was a man of thought, and he may with some justice be called
'the Cameronian philosopher,' for in his greatest work, 'A Hind Let Loose,' he
expounded... the philosophy of what might be called Radical Calvinism... He is
worthy to rank with Buchanan and Rutherford among the chief Scottish
protagonists" concerning Calvinistic political theory. Though MacPherson
is exceedingly weak in expressing some points of the hard-edged Cameronianism
of Shields the book is still useful for much of the information that it
contains. It also helps set the context for Shield's masterful and revolutionary
work A Hind Let Loose (available through SWRB for $39.99) a book
easily in the class of Rutherford's famous Lex Rex ($29.95).

MACPHERSON, HECTOR
The Jesuits in History
Paisley
calls the Jesuit's the "Gestapo of Rome."
This easy-reading, 149 page book will show you why. MaCpherson maintains that
every nation that allows Jesuitism on its soil "will one day pay a heavy
penalty." Moreover, he writes that "if
we are to escape the penalty, we must come to realize that a system which
enslaves the individual, fosters superstition, is at war with patriotism and
destroys morality, will, if allowed to flourish unchecked, sooner or later destroy
society."

MANLY, BASIL, Jr.
The Bible Doctrine of Inspiration
All Things Work For Good ($7.96, 2 cassettes) Read by Elder Lyndon Dohms. Many popular misconceptions surround
Romans 8:28: "And we know that all things work together for good to them
that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose" -- and
Manton explodes them all in classic Puritan style. He shows that sin does not
do good as sin, but as it is repented of. He gives many reasons why the word
"all" in Romans 8:28 must be limited by the analogy of faith (as
Calvinists rightly limit the word "all" in regard to soteriology when
it is warranted -- or as when a conductor shouts "all aboard," but
only lets those who have tickets on the train). Furthermore, Manton deals with
the misuse of providence and shows why suffering is good for those who are
soft-hearted (or who are softened by it); but he also notes how suffering can
be a curse to those who harden their hearts in such situations. He speaks of
pleasure as "the great sorcerer enchanting mankind" and shows why God
gives some over to their lusts. At one point he counters the reprobate's view
of the problem of evil, answering the question "If there is an
all-powerful God how is there evil?" with "If there is no God how is
there good?" There is much to ponder and meditate upon in these notably
outstanding and practical sermons taken from Manton's Works
(Sermon 37). Though this review may seem to dwell on the polemical value of
this work, Manton's preaching always has much which all the lovers of the Lord
Jesus Christ will find very heartening and encouraging.

MANTON, THOMAS
The Complete Works of Thomas Manton
(22 Volumes)
Manton
was "one of the most eminent of the
Nonconformist divines." He was born in 1620 and died in 1677.
He was chosen to write "The Epistle to the Reader: Especially Heads of
Families" of the famous Westminster standards. "Received episcopal
institution in 1661. Resigned in 1662, on account of the Act of Uniformity
(which among other wicked, Satanic enactments, its principal terms required a
"declaration of 'unfeigned assent and consent' to everything contained in
the Book of Common Prayer, re-ordination for those not episcopally
ordained" and, most evil of all, "a renunciation of the Solemn League
and Covenant. Knowing that the Puritans would not submit to such terms, the
Authorities framed the Act to secure their expulsion" cf. Sermons of the
Great Ejection by Iain Murray [Banner
of Truth, reprinted 1962]). He was a man of great
learning and extensive reading, of a sound judgement, and had the art of
reducing volumes of divinity into a narrow compass. According to Charnock, he was the best collector of sense
of the age. Dr. Bates says, 'A clear
judgement, rich fancy, strong memory, and happy elocution, met in him, and were
excellently improved by diligent study'" (James Darling, Cyclopaedia
Bibliographica, 1854, pp. 1953-1954).
Includes Manton's better-known volumes, such as his commentary on James and
Jude and his Sermons on Psalm 119, as well as a host of other practical
preaching, teaching and Scriptural exposition. The 22nd volume contains two
large indices (by subject and text). A full list
of everything included in this massive set is at:
http://www.swrb.com/catalog/M.htm .
C.H.
Spurgeon wrote of this set,
"While
commenting upon the One Hundred and Nineteenth Psalm, I was brought into most
intimate communion with Thomas Manton, who has discoursed upon that marvellous
portion of Scripture with great fulness and power. I have come to know him so
well that I could choose him out from among a thousand divines if he were again
to put on his portly form, and display among modern men that countenance
wherein was a 'great mixture of majesty and meekness.' His works occupy
twenty-two volumes in the modern reprint: a mighty mountain of sound theology.
They mostly consist of sermons; but what sermons! For solid, sensible
instruction forcibly delivered, they cannot be surpassed. Manton is not
brilliant, but he is always clear; he is not oratorical, but he is powerful; he
is not striking, but he is deep. There is not a poor discourse in the whole
collection: he is evenly good, constantly excellent. Ministers who do not know
Manton need not wonder if they are themselves unknown." -
- J.C.
Ryle, from the Introduction, also
stated,
"It
only remains for me to express my earnest hope that this new edition of
Manton's works may prove acceptable to the public, and meet with many
purchasers and readers. If any one wants to buy a good specimen of a Puritan
divine, my advice unhesitatingly is, ' Let him buy Manton.'
"These
sermons are the legacy of a powerful preacher devoted to the systematic
teaching and application of God's Word. Whether he is expounding the Lord's
Prayer, Psalm 119, Isaiah 53, James, or Jude, Manton presents us with the
best that English Puritans had to offer
in careful, solid, warmhearted exposition of the Scriptures." - Dr.
Joel R. Beeke
"This valuable set of Puritan
writings only becomes available once every few decades when an adventuresome
publisher decides to invest a great deal of time and money to offer this gift
to Christ's church. It has only been reprinted twice in the last 150 years, not
counting the current edition. Do not fail to obtain a copy of this set, and
think of giving one to your pastor as an act of gratitude for his
faithfulness." - Dr. Don Kistler

J.C. Ryle on this set:
The publication of a complete and uniform edition of Manton's works is a
great boon to the readers of English theology. Many of his best writings have
been hitherto inaccessible to all who have not long purses and large libraries.
The few who know him would gladly testify, I am sure, that Thomas Manton was
one of the best authors of his day, and that his works richly deserve
reprinting.
It only remains for me to express my earnest hope that this new edition of
Manton's works may prove acceptable to the public, and meet with many
purchasers and readers. If any one wants to buy a good specimen of a Puritan
divine, my advice unhesitatingly is, " Let him buy Manton."
We have fallen upon evil days both for thinking and reading. Sermons which
contain thought and matter are increasingly rare. The inexpressible
shallownesss, thinness, and superficiality of many popular sermons in this day
is something lamentable and appalling. Readers of real books appear to become
fewer and fewer every year. Newspapers, and magazines, and periodicals seem to
absorb the whole reading powers of the rising generation. What it will all end
in God only knows. The prospect before us is sorrowful and humiliating.
In days like these, I am thankful that the publishers of Manton's Works have
boldly come forward to offer some real literary gold to the reading public. I
earnestly trust that they will meet with the success which they deserve. If any
recommendation of mine can help them in bringing out the writings of this
admirable Puritan in a new form, I give it cheerfully and with all my heart.
Covenanting with God Pressed
Manton notes, "[r]emember the great quarrel that God hath against the
Christian world and all the professors of his name is about his covenant and
oath taken. What is the reason God doth visit Christendom with famines,
pestilences, inundations, and wars? Because they do not stand to the oath of
God that is upon them. Every professor of the name of Christ, he is supposed to
be in covenant with God." This book explains our duty to covenant with God
and what that means. It also shows how the blessings and cursings of the
covenant come upon individuals and nations.

David's Covenanting Our Duty Also ($7.96 US funds, 2 cassettes) Read by Elder Lyndon Dohms. Manton was a covenanted
English Presbyterian (he swore the Solemn League and Covenant). He was also
chosen to write the "Epistle to the Reader" in the Westminster
Confession of Faith (which speaks volumes as to his credibility among the
preachers and scholars of his day). Sermons like this show us the great depth
of the knowledge that was prevalent during the covenanting period, not only in
Scotland, but in England also.

How Ought We To Improve Our Baptism? (1674, reprinted 1844)
Question 167 of the Westminster Larger Catechism asks: "How is our Baptism
to be improved by us?" The answer: "The needful but much neglected
duty of improving our Baptism, is to be performed by us all our life long,
especially in the time of temptation, and when we are present at the
administration of it to others; by serious and thankful consideration of the
nature of it, and of the ends for which Christ instituted it, the privileges
and benefits conferred and sealed thereby, and our solemn vow made therein; by
being humbled for our sinful defilement, our falling short of, and walking
contrary to, the grace of baptism, and our engagements; by growing up to
assurance of pardon of sin, and of all other blessings sealed to us in that
sacrament; by drawing strength from the death and resurrection of Christ, into
whom we are baptized, for the mortifying of sin, and quickening of grace; and
by endeavoring to live by faith, to have our conversation in holiness and
righteousness, as those that have therein given up their names to Christ; and
to walk in brotherly love, as being baptized by the same Spirit into one
body." Manton, in his classic style, elaborates on this teaching.

Liberty and Blessing in the Law of Christ
Demonstrates how true liberty, practically speaking (concerning

is to be a slave to sin. Also sets forth the blessing of obedience.

Loving God By Loving His Law
Jesus said, "If ye love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15). John
points out, "and hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his
commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a
liar, and the truth is not in him" (1 John 2:3-4). Manton uses these
themes, as a departure point, relative to Psalm 119, to show the proper relationship
between law, love and loving the law ó as it relates to the greatest law lover,
the Lord Jesus Christ!

Exposes all the common mistakes associated with church unity, how to overcome
them and what pleases the Lord. The true church is one in all ages and only the
most rude and ignorant professors of religion will deny that true visible unity
is a Biblical goal -- or that God will, as postmillennialists maintain,
sovereignly bring about this visible Biblical unity. Working from Zech. 14:9,
"In that day there shall be one Lord, and his name one." Manton
builds his case based on the fact that "purity is the ground of
unity."

Sanctification, Perfection and Scripture ($3.98, 1 cassettes) Read by Elder Lyndon Dohms. Another testimony to
the plethora of powerful sermons that were being preached by the covenanted
English Presbyterians of the mid-seventeenth century. This sermon should do
much to encourage all saints to seek after holiness -- with all their heart,
soul, strength and mind .

The True Psalmody; or, The Bible Psalms the Church's Only
Manual of Praise
(1878)
This
book was originally "issued at Philadelphia in 1859 by a committee of
ministers from the Reformed Presbyterian and United Presbyterian church of that
city. A judicious compilation of the finest argumentation from a number of 19th
century writers, the volume went through at least six
American editions, the last in 1870. It was also
printed in Belfast, Ireland in 1867, and in 1878 at Edinbugh, Scotland"
(Isbell, Presbyterian Reformed
magazine, vol. IX, No. 3, p. 111). In our opinion, this is the best older
American defense of the Reformed practice of exclusive Psalmody, as it covers some aspects of this debate not covered
in any other publication. 212 pages.

The Bay Psalm Book (1640)
"The first book printed in North America, The Whole Booke of Psalmes
Faithfully Translated Into English Metre, commonly known as the Bay Psalm Book,
appeared in Cambridge, Massachusetts (1640). Designed for public and private
worship, this metrical version of the Psalms became extremely popular and by
1733 had gone through about seventy editions" (Encyclopedia of the
Reformed Faith, p. 30). This is a facsimile reprint of the first
edition printed by Stephen Daye at Cambridge, in New England in 1640.
Commenting on the origin of the name of this Psalter, the introduction states
that "(t)he new Psalm Book was adopted at once by nearly every
congregation in the Colony of Massachusetts Bay, and for that reason it came to
be known as the 'Bay Psalm Book.'" Furthermore, it is noted that
"(a)fter being used for upwards of a century, the Bay Psalm Book gave way
to the newer version of Tate and Brady and of Isaac Watts ("Watts'
whims" as the Presbyterians call them--RB)." Only ten copies of this
first edition were known to be extant in 1903.

MASON, ARCHIBALD
The Fall of Babylon the Great, by the Agency of Christ, and
Through the Instrumentality of His Witnesses: In Four Discourses (1821)
This
book is made up of six sermons and one lengthy lecture. The first two sermons
(on Rev. 8:5) deal with "Christ the Mediatorial
Angel, Casting the Fire of Divine Judgments Into the Earth."
The next two sermons (on Rev. 11:6) treat "Christ's
Two Witnesses Smiting the Antichristian Earth With All Plagues, As Often As
They Will." The first four sermons cover 112 pages. These works
are followed with "Remarks on the Sixth Vial,
Symbolizing the Fall of the Turkish Empire" on Rev. 16:12 (24
pages), "Remarks on the Seventh Vial,
Symbolizing the Fall of Popery and Despotism" Rev. 16:17 and
21:5,6 (24 pages) and the final discourse, "Observations
on the Public Covenants Between God and the Church" (104
pages), taking off from, "They are turned back to the iniquities of their
forefathers, which refused to hear my words; and they went after other gods to
serve them: the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant
which I made with their fathers" (Jer. 11:10). David
Steele, in his classic Notes on the Apocalypse includes Mason among his list of "distinguished and
approved interpreters of the book of Revelation." 264 pages in total.

Deals
with the author's view of the overthrow of
Antichrist, when the millennium will begin and what will transpire leading up to
that time. Though this book illustrates how some historicists have
erred in the specifics of their interpretation (especially regarding their
"guesses" at exact dates), works like this can be very instructive
for drawing out the larger Scriptural context of historicist thought -- as the
system does not stand or fall on any individual chronological expectations, but
on its fidelity to Scripture concerning the larger prophetic issues (dating
eccentricities notwithstanding). The practical exhortations to Godliness found
herein are also of continued value and unaffected by the work's few
shortcomings. 248 pages.

MASON, ARCHIBALD
Observations on the Public Covenants Between God and the
Church (1799)
Greg Barrow, one of the leading Covenanter
scholars of our day, calls this "one of the
best books on covenanting." It contains general observations on
God's covenantal relationship with His bride (the church) and makes a number of
practical inferences related to covenants and covenanting. Mason is careful to
clearly state that,
(i)f
any actions cannot be traced up to the precepts of God's word, or to the
approved examples recorded in the Scripture, as their warrant, they are
reprobate silver, and must not have a place in the church's bond to obedience;
but whatever actions are agreeable to his law, these may and ought to have a
place, either in general or in the detail, within the church's covenant
engagements (p. 63).
He also delineates between
God's testimony (in His Word) and the testimony of the church for the truths
contained in God's Word.
Additionally, he notes that, "(t)he church's testimony must comprehend her
public declaration both for the things of God, and against those things which
are opposite thereunto (p. 103). It has often been pointed out that it is particularly
this testimony against the specific sins of the day that stirs the dragon
(through both civil and ecclesiastical antichrist and other misguided
"independents") to persecute the "woman in the wilderness."
Satan has always shown a special hatred for those
who seek to keep -- by God's grace -- their covenant obligations pure and
entire.
Moreover, Mason demonstrates
that when present covenant obligations, which have long been ignored or
forgotten are once again brought to public notice, a familiar pattern
(experienced by all the saints) of false accusations and worse are stirred up
by the Devil, in opposition to covenant renewal. But, in spite of the rage of the wicked one against
the ordinance of covenanting (whether through "open enemies or professed
friends of this divine ordinance") Christ will most certainly have the
victory, in our day and in that which is to come.
This book should be especially encouraging to
the remnant of contemporary Covenanters (in our day of gross corporate
declension from covenanted Reformation attainments and the open highhanded sin
of national covenant-breaking), for as Mason points out, God "will not finally cast off a covenanted people; but will remember
mercy for them, deliver them from their low estate, and restore them to the
enjoyment of his special goodness as their covenant God" (p.
84). 104 pages in length, this item is also included in Mason's larger book The
Fall of Babylon the Great, by the Agency of Christ, and Through the
Instrumentality of His Witnesses: In Four Discourses.

Cotton Mather wrote and published more than 400 works. His magnum opus was Magnalia Christi Americana (1702), an ecclesiastical history of America from
the founding of New England to his own time. "American Congregational
minister and author, supporter of the old order of the ruling clergy, who
became the most celebrated of all New England Puritans. He combined a
[supposedly -WC] mystical strain (he believed in the existence of witchcraft)
with a modern scientific interest (he supported smallpox inoculation).
The son of Increase Mather and the grandson of John Cotton and Richard
Mather, Cotton Mather lived all his life in Boston. He entered Harvard at the
age of 12, easily passing entrance requirements to read and write Latin and to
"decline the Greek nouns and verbs." He devoted himself unremittingly
to study and prayer. At 18 he received his M.A. degree from the hands of his
father, who was president of the college. He preached his first sermon in his
father's church in August 1680 and in October another from his grandfather John
Cotton's pulpit. He was formally ordained in 1685 and became his father's colleague.
He devoted his life to praying, preaching, writing, and publishing and still
followed his main purpose in life of doing good.

Preface to the Bay Psalm Book (1640)
The Bay Psalm Book was the first book printed in America! Gary DeMar in
America's Christian History, (p. 99) has brought to light some interesting
historical footnotes when he writes, "The Bay Psalm Book was the approved
hymnal in the New England colonies," and that "a young colonist's
education in New England was provided by a very limited curriculum, consisting
of three books in addition to the Bible: the Hornbook, the New England Primer,
and the Bay Psalm Book." This certainly speaks volumes about the place
afforded the Psalms during America's formative state. Here Mather introduces
this famous Psalm book and defends the exclusive Psalmody of these early
Americans.

M'CRIE, THOMAS
History of the Progress and Suppression of the Reformation
in Italy in the Sixteenth Century (1856)
This book has been translated into French,
Dutch, German and Italian. "The circulation" of this book, notes the
advertisement to the second edition (in 1856),
especially in the
language of the natives of Italy, has, as might be expected, roused the
jealousy of the Court of Rome. Accordingly, in the
Index of Prohibited Books, by command of Pope Gregory XVI, under the decree of
22d September 1836, the Italian version of Dr. M'Crie's Progress and
Suppression of the Reformation in Italy,
takes its place with other criminals... In the famous Encyclical Letter,
published by the same pontiff on the 8th May 1844, against the Bible Society
and the Christian Alliance, our author's work is again denounced in the goodly
company of the Bible and the History of the Reformation by Dr. Merle d'Aubigne (see below--RB).
Further notes reveal that "the history
of the Reformation in Italy was a favorite with the author;" it being
the only work of standard
merit on the Reformation in Italy --
' the one book on the subject,' as it is termed by an Italian correspondent --
(which) has been the production of a Scottish minister, whose time was so
occupied by other pursuits, which he held to be of paramount importance, that
the wonder must be how he could have contrived to collect, condense, and
arrange in such an interesting narrative, the mass of information which it
contains.
Another interesting sidebar, which M'Crie
relays in the Preface to the first edition, shows that,
the Index
Expurgatorius of
Rome was itself reformed, with the view of preventing it from being known that
certain names had once been branded with the stigma of heresy.
When your father is the father of lies, as
with Rome, you leave quite a trail to expose your wickedness to all those who
are open to the truth.
The appendix contains some very
interesting pieces, not the least of which is a letter written from Rome in
1521 concerning Luther. Items like this give insight (otherwise unavailable)
into the intrigues and machinations of Romish whore, as well as painting a
clear picture of what the Reformers and those who followed them were facing, as
they risked their lives for the cause of Christ. At one point the
writer (of this letter) notes that "there is
not an intelligent person in Rome who is not perfectly convinced that Martin
has spoken the truth in most things; but good men dissemble from dread of the
tyrant, and bad men are enraged, because they are forced to hear the truth;"
at another point he comments that Luther is "looked
upon as a greater enemy to us than the Turk."

History of the Progress and Suppression of the Reformation in Spain in
the Sixteenth Century (1851)
M'Crie, a careful historian, traces the ecclesiastical history of Spain from
its earliest days to the writing of this book -- though he focuses on the
period of the first Reformation. He shows how numerous factors (including among
these the inquisition [from the writings of the secretary to the Inquisition at
Madrid], civil tyranny, theological superstition and the general ignorance and
licentiousness fostered by Romanism) have all "conspired" to produce
powerful obstacles to Christian Reformation, civil liberty and biblical
justice. This is not a pretty picture, but it is one which gives a number of
insights into the working of the mystery of iniquity. This is a sequel to
M'Crie's work on the Reformation in Italy and was written, in part, with the
intent of showing that "(w)e are not to conclude that the Spanish martyrs
threw away their lives, and spilt their blood in vain." Indexed, 218
pages.

The Life of Andrew Melville (2 volumes)
Almost 900 pages covering the life and work of Knox's successor. Melville raised the level of learning and education
in Scotland to the point where it became a leading nation in this field. He
also advanced much of the practical work concerning the purifying of the

for his bold rebuke of "God's silly vassal," King James VI, regarding
the divine right of the true church to govern her own affairs, without
unwarranted interference from the civil magistrate.

M'CRIE, THOMAS
Life of Knox. Containing Illustrations of the History of
the Reformation in Scotland; with Biographical Notices of the Principal
Reformers, & Sketches of the Progress of Literature in Scotland During the
Sixteenth Century (1855)
Iain
Murray, in his stirring introduction to Cunningham's Historical Theology writes, "The third event marking the
commencement of this spiritual movement was the publication of a book in 1811.
It was the biography of John Knox by Thomas M'Crie. All over Scotland this work was used to revive the
memory of the great Reformer and nothing could have been a more telling protest
against the stifling influence of Moderatism. It brought many a student and
minister into the experience once described by James Fraser of Brae in his Memoirs: 'When I read Knox, I thought I saw another scheme of
divinity, much more agreeable to the Scriptures and to my experience than the
modern.'" M'Crie followed this up in 1819 with a biography of Knox's great
successor, Andrew Melville (Life of Andrew Melville [2 vol.], hardcover
photocopy $64.00; cerlox photocopy $29.99), and these two books became known as
the 'Iliad and Odyssey of the Scottish Church.' Just as Homer's heroes fired
the hearts of many imitators so M'Crie's biographies aroused a holy ambition in
many to follow the noble example of these two spiritual giants." M'Crie's
work is an undisputed classic regarding this fiery reformer. It exhibits
information on Knox and the Scottish Reformation which has been hid in
manuscripts and books which are now little known or consulted. Knox may be the
most pertinent first Reformation Reformer to study in our day of widespread
idolatry, theological and civil pluralism, anti-Christian government,
humanistic law, relativism, false ecumenicity, and the revival of that
"masterpiece of Satan," Roman Catholicism. Read
everything that you can get your hands on either by or about Knox; you'll never
be the same again! This is the full unedited text of 484 pages, not available from any other publisher (to our

M'CRIE, THOMAS
Statement of the Difference...Particularly on the Power of
Civil Magistrates Respecting Religion, National Reformation, National Churches,
and National Covenants (1871)
The
ablest exposition in the English language of the Establishment Principle... Dr. (George) Smeaton describes the Statement as a
masterly defense of the principles of establishments as Scripture truth: and the most complete vindication ever given to the world of
the position occupied by the Reformed Church of Scotland, on the whole subject
of national religion and the magistrates legitimate power in promoting it.
'The same thoroughness,' wrote the late Rev. D. Beaton, 'which gave such
abiding value to his great biography of Knox, is shown in this, his less known
work... Dr. McCrie in his Statement shows that all
the Confessions of the Protestant and Presbyterian Churches of the Reformation,
both in Britain and on the Continent of Europe, held and maintained the
Establishment Principle. 'These harmoniously agree,' he writes, 'in
declaring as with one mouth that civil authority is not limited to the secular
affairs of men, and that the public care and advancement of religion is a
principle part of the official duty of magistrates.' He goes on to give
extracts from The Confession of Helvetia; The
Confession of Bohemia; The Confession of Saxony; The French Confession; The
Belgic or Dutch Confession; The Confession of the English Congregation in
Geneva; The Scots Confession and The Westminster Confession of Faith.
'Such is the harmony of doctrine in the Protestant
churches on this head,' he remarks, 'expressed in their confessions and public
formularies drawn from the Word of God; a harmony which deserves great
attention, and from which none should rashly depart' (as cited in Christ's
Kingship Over the Nations by C.J.
Brown).
Concerning the doctrine of national obedience
to Christ, M'Crie demonstrates in the most convincing way that there are few
doctrines "of the practical kind, in which the best interests of mankind and
the general state of religion in the world, are more deeply concerned, than in
the right and wrong determination of this question."
Contains an excellent preface
by George Smeaton. Considered one of the definitive works on Church/State
relations, defending the historic Reformed position. An
extremely rare and very expensive item if located as a rare book.

"M'Crie's book is written with a strong pastoral outlook. It is not a
lofty tome hurled down from above by ivory-towered theologians or church
bureaucrats. Rather, M'Crie speaks eloquently to Christians who are troubled by
the present disarray in the Church. He fully appreciates the biblical
obligation to seek unity. Yet, he also recognizes that it is folly to construct
a superficial union which sacrifices truth and purity on the altar of
expediency," notes Kevin Reed.

The Story of the Scottish Church (1874, reprinted 1988)
This is probably the work for which M'Crie (the younger) is generally best
remembered. Almost 600 pages in length, this book covers the period from 1529
(the state of religion before the Reformation) to 1843 (the formation of the
Free Church of Scotland). It is well indexed and contains much historical
information left out by shorter histories, making it an ideal study tool; its
only drawback being M'Crie's somewhat soft historical and editorial
interpretation of certain events. Thus, we again caution the reader that this book
should be read with one eye on the Act, Declaration and Testimony for the Whole
of Our Covenanted Reformation (by the Reformed Presbytery).

The Unity of the Church
Demonstrates that truth is the biblical bond of unity. Discusses causes of

British nation concerning past attainments and descending covenant obligations
(which is also helpful concerning all nations that have constitutionally

M'LEOD, ALEXANDER
Lectures Upon the Principal Prophecies of the Revelation (1814)
M'Leod, a Reformed Presbyterian, here defends (in 480 pages) classic historicist
Reformation eschatology from the book of Revelation. David
Steele, in his Notes on the Apocalypse commends this work numerous times. Steele writes,
the
best works to be obtained as helps to understand the prophetic parts of
scripture, will be found in the labors of those who, from age to age, have
obeyed the gracious call of Christ -- who have 'come out from mystic Babylon,'
from the Romish communion, from the mother and her harlot daughters, and who
have associated more or less intimately with the witnesses. Among these may be
consulted with profit the works of Durham, Mason and M'Leod (p. 312)... The late Rev. Alexander M'Leod, D.D., who
had the works of learned predecessors before him, has successfully corrected many
of their misinterpretations in his valuable publication, entitled Lectures
upon the Principal Prophecies of the Revelation. At the time when he wrote that work, he possessed
several advantages in aid of his own expositions. He had access to the most valuable
works which had been issued before that date (1814). He was then in the vigor
of youthful manhood; and he was also comparatively free from the trammels which
in attempts to expound the Apocalypse, have cramped the energies of many a well
disciplined mind, political partialities. At the time of these profound
studies, he occupied a position 'in the wilderness,' from which as a stand
point, like John in Patmos, he could most advantageously survey the passing
scenes of providence with the ardor of youthful emotion, and with unsullied
affection for his divine master... expressing my
obligations to the Doctor's labors, to whose system of interpretation as well
as to most of his details, I cheerfully give my approbation in preference to
all other expositors whose works it has been in my power to consult
(pp. 317-19)... Doctor M'Leod and Mr. Faber (see next item--RB) I consider
among the best expositors of the prophecies on which they severally wrote... On
material points they have shed much light where those who preceded them left
the reader in darkness, or involved him in perplexing labyrinths. Faber
preceded M'Leod, and the latter availed himself of all the aid furnished by the
former; yet till the 'mystery of God shall be finished,' his people will be receiving
accessions of light from the 'sure word of prophecy' (p. 321)... I can again cordially
recommend to his attention the Lectures of Doctor M'Leod, as the best
exposition of those parts of the Apocalypse of which he treats, that has come
under my notice' (p. 324).
But Steele is not shy about pointing out
that,
the principal
defect pervading the Lectures, and one which most readers will be disposed to
view in an opposite light, appears to be, a charity too broad, a catholicity
too expansive, to be easily reconciled with a consistent position among the
mystic witnesses. Their author, however, deriving much information from the
learned labors of English prelates on prophecy, could not 'find in his heart'
to exclude them from a place in the honorable roll of the witnesses. I am
unable to recognize any of those who are in organic fellowship with the 'eldest
daughter of Popery,' as entitled to rank among those who are symbolized as
'clothed in sackcloth.' The two positions and fellowships appear to be obviously
incompatible and palpably irreconcilable. It is true that there have been and
still are in the English establishment divines who are strictly evangelical;
but the reigning Mediator views and treats individuals, as he views and treats
the moral person with which individuals freely choose to associate; and we
ought to 'have the mind of Christ' (I Cor. 2:16, p. 322-23, bold emphases added
throughout).
Notwithstanding a few
shortcomings, this is probably the best book available (at present) on the book
of Revelation.

A Scriptural View of the Character, Causes, and Ends of the Present War
(1815)
Though having the war of 1812 (to 1815), between the United States and Britain,
in view, the author notes that "the principles which I have laid down, and
enforced in these sermons, are not, however, of mere temporary interest.
Whether in peace, or at war, they are of importance to a Christian community.
There are the permanent principles of social order and public equity."
Chapter headings include: "The Right Discussing of Public Affairs,"
dealing with why "Ministers have the right of discussing from the pulpit
those political question which affect Christian morals" and "The
Moral Character of the US Federal Constitution;" The Moral Character of
the Two Belligerents" (i.e. the national character, as moral persons, of
both the United States and Britain); "The Lawfulness of Defensive
War;" "The Present War," dealing with how "War in Defence
of Property, Liberty, and National Independence and Honour is Lawful: and (How)
Defensive War May Be for Precaution, Resistance, or Redress;" and
"The Ends for Which God in His Providence Permits the Existence of this
War." M'Leod concludes this work with these stirring words, "(t)he
most faithful of Reformers with patriotic ardour contended with the sword in defence
of their civil and religious liberties. Ulric Zwingle, the morning-star of the
reformation, fell in battle at Zurich, 1530, at the commencement of the strife
against arbitrary power; and towards the close of the struggle which terminated
in the overthrow of the purest of the churches (i.e. the covenanted
Presbyterian Church of Scotland--RB), Richard Cameron fell at Airsmoss, 1680,
while defending, as a Christian hero, the religion and liberties of his
country, against the tyranny of the bishops, and the royal house of Stuart...
If I claim a place among consistent Protestants, I must testify against all the
acts of antichristian power. If I follow the steps which are died by the blood
of the Martyrs, I must raise my voice against the thrones which shed that
blood. If the Bible is my system of religion, and of social order, I must
disclaim attachment to those powers that are hostile to evangelical
doctrine." 224 pages.

The Ancient History of Psalmody (1852)
This resource covers the character of the age of the Church Fathers and the
history of Psalmody in the early ages of the church after the Apostles.
Statements related to this issue from Pliny, Tertullian, Jerome, Cyril,
Augustine, Cassian, Chrysostom, the Apostolic Constitutions and others are all
included, set in their context and commented on (from the Latin).
Interestingly, M'Master writes,
The truth is, fifty years after the death of the Apostles had not passed by, when the church they had planted with so much purity, and fostered with so much care, exhibited an aspect very different from what it did before. The historian Hegesippus, of the second century, pronounced the virgin purity of the church to have been confined to the Apostolic age. "Monstrous attempts were made, in that century, to reconcile falsehood with truth, light with darkness"(Mosheim, I. 174). In this age originated a bewildering mysticism, an idle monkish seclusion from the relations and duties of active life, and a multiplication of superstitious innovations, which cast a veil of darkness over the truth, substituting for the simplicity of the gospel an unseemly mixture of truth and error. Jerome, of the fourth century, testifies that the "primitive church was tainted with gross errors while the Saviour's blood was yet warm in Judea." In the following periods the depravity increased. God, indeed, had still his hidden ones, and in their hearts and hands his own cause was preserved; yet the picture of the times is drawn, on the page of history, in dark colours. "There was no charity in works, no discipline in manners." The practice of such periods can go but a little way in the settlement of controversies respecting divine institutions. For satisfaction, as to the appointments of God, we must rest, not on the practice of the Fathers, but on the records of inspired truth. Keeping this in recollection, it may, nevertheless, be interesting to know their matter and modes of worship. And as a somewhat imposing display of research into the early practice of the church, on the subject of Psalmody, has by various writers been made, it may not be inexpedient to inquire, how far their representations of that practice and the inferences they drew from it, are entitled to our confidence.

M'MASTER, GILBERT
Isaac Watts' Heresies On the Trinity and Person of Jesus
Christ Exposed
(1852)
M'Master writes,
Whatever obscurity, from the ambiguity of his language
and other causes, may hang over his views, the following facts admit of no
doubt--that is--that Dr. W. was an anti-trinitarian, and that the distinct
divine Personality of the Son of God, as equal with the Father, had no place in
his acknowledged creed. The labours of his life, in which he manifested more
than his usual mental vigour, were in direct opposition to the orthodox faith
on this whole subject... He ventured to tell his Maker that the doctrine of
three real persons in the Godhead, is a strange and perplexing notion, which we
cannot receive; and which is not even inferable from the whole contents of the
Book of God!... What upon this fundamental subject were the views of Dr. W.?
Certainly not those of Christianity. They might be those of a slightly modified
Arianism, but not less gross or erroneous than those of the Alexandrian
presbyter. The scheme of both was really a form of the old Oriental Gnosticism.
The superangelic spirit of Arius and Watts was but an AEon of the Gnostics. The
scheme of W. may be Gnosticism, but Christianity it is not. We understand his
scheme as did Bradbury, Doddridge, Edwards, and, perhaps, as every one
understands him who has attentively read his works. Why then be specially
reproached for understanding what they understood, and for saying what they
said? That these vagaries of the Dr. were neither the fruits of youthful
indiscretion, nor of the infirmities of advanced years, he assures us himself.
In the preface to his "Useful Questions," he certifies his readers
that "These papers are the product of that part of his life, when his
powers of mind and body were in full vigour." That he abandoned them at a
late period of his life, it would be grateful to be assured of, but of the fact
no evidence has been given. The well meant attempt of Mr. Toplady to prove it,
it is well known, was a failure. And his permission of the continuance of the
orthodox phraseology of his poetry will not do it. The Dr's. correspondence
with Mr. Martin Tomkins, an anti-trinitarian, will explain why he did not
alter, as he wished to do, the sentiments of his religious poetry. The language
of poetry is no certain index of the principles of the poet. The modern
Transcendentalist is often poetic in his theology, and in an evangelical strain
he can take the language of Rutherford, and Owen, and Edwards, and talk of a
close walk with God, and of intimate communion with him. The pantheism of
transcendentalists allows them thus to speak a very spiritual language: while
they may mean no more than their exposure to a July sun or a December frost, to
a gentle shower or a storm of hail. The poetry of fancy will not do away the
heresy of prose. This brings to mind a remarkable coincidence. Bardesanes of
Edessa, of the second century, and Watts of Southampton; of the eighteenth
century, were both distinguished for their advocacy of error, and both were
poets, and are the only poets, as far as recollected, who attempted an
imitation of the book of Psalms, each in a book of 150 hymns. If history is to
be credited, the Gnostic, as a poet, was not inferior to him of Southampton.
Beware
innovators in worship: their other heresies are never far behind -- as this
title demonstrates concerning the heresies of Watts! This book is extracted from the appendix of M'Master's

Defending the Reformed Presbyterian Position on the Civil Magistrate
(1781)
A fine defense of the Covenanted position on civil matters: an answer
to the errors of the Seceders regarding the civil magistrate, the covenants and
the position of the Westminster Assembly concerning these matters. It is curious that, at one point (see page 72),
M'Millan rebukes the Seceders for censuring in Reformed Presbyterian teaching
what they (the Seceders) call "Antiscriptural" and
"Antigovernment" -- which, when set forth by one of their own
noteworthy divines, they completely overlook. In fact M'Millan calls upon the
Seceders to read one of the best books penned by their own number as
preparation to answer this letter he has written -- because the Seceder author
he refers to was much closer to the Covenanted Reformed Presbyterian position
that to the Seceder's errant doctrine. What book did he call upon his opponents
to read? None other than John Brown's (of Haddington) The Absurdity and
Perfidy of All Authoritative Toleration of Gross Heresy, Blasphemy, Idolatry,
Popery, in Britain. In two letters to a friend in which the doctrine of the
Westminster Confession of Faith relative to Toleration of a False Religion, and
the power of the civil magistrate about sacred matters; and the nature, origin,
ends and obligation of the National Covenant and Solemn League are candidly
represented and defended ($19.00 HP, $9.99 P). For advanced study,

The Protestation, Declinatur and Appeal (1708)
"In 1708 the Assembly (of the backslidden Church of Scotland--RB) remitted
both cases (against MacMillan and MacNeil--RB), with full power, to the
Commission. Libels were prepared against both ("nothing new under the
sun"--RB), and they were cited to appear before the Commission on the last
Wednesday of September. Neither of them obeyed the summons, but a paper signed
by both M'Millan and M'Neil was laid on the table. It was their 'Protestation,
Declinature, and Appeal.' ... (S)pecial prominence is given in the Libel to the
seditious and disloyal principles avowed in the 'Protestation,' -- the denial
that it is duty to pay cess to the present civil powers, the assertion that the
taking of the Oath of Allegiance is one of the steps of defection, and, what
are called, expressions of contempt for the civil authority and for her
Majesty's person and Government. That is, the chief grounds of the sentence
were the principles all along maintained by the Societies as being those of the
Church of Scotland in its purest times, and it was now declared that they were
not to be tolerated in the Established Church. The 'Protestation,' which was
dated from Balmaghie Manse, is a clear and vigorous statement of the case of
the Societies against both Church and State, and recapitulates the reasons for
standing aloof -- the most recent step of defection being the 'unhallowed'
Union... The closing words of the 'Protestation' are in harmony with the avowed
relation of the Society people to the Church of Scotland. They never owned a
positive and active separation, but only that which Renwick (in his letters
[cf. Life and Letters of James Renwick by Carslaw, $19.00 HP,
$9.99 P] and his Informatory Vindication
[$19.00 HP, $9.99 P]--RB) calls a 'negative separation, passively considered,'
-- a standing apart from a declining and corrupt portion, ready to associate
again when the corruptions are confessed and removed. The Protestors of 1708
maintained the same attitude; the closing sentence runs thus: 'Finally, that we
may not be judged by any as persons of an infallible spirit, and our actions
above the cognizance of the judicatories of Christ's appointment, we appeal to
the first free, faithful and rightly constituted Assembly in this Church, to
whose decision and sentence in the things libelled against us, we willingly
refer ourselves, and crave liberty to extend and enlarge this our Protestation,
Declinature, and Appeal, as need requires.'" (Matthew Hutchison, The
Reformed Presbyterian Church in Scotland: It Origin and History 1680-1876, 1893, pp. 155-156 [$34.00 HP, $17.84 P]). In short,
this is a continuing defence of the faithful testimony of previous Covenanters
(like Rutherford, Gillespie, M'Ward, Brown [of Wamphray], Cameron, Cargill and
Renwick) and the covenanted biblical attainments of the second Reformation. 8

How Best to Secure a Return to the Use of the Psalms in the Ordinance of
Praise
Superb, strongly worded, Biblical teaching on the proper method of lovingly
bringing peace and purity to the body of Christ. The author contends that
"hymn-singing in the service of praise is in its ultimate analysis a
species of idolatry," and thus must be strenuously opposed. Numerous practical
methods (and the rationale) to promote Psalmody and oppose the use of man-made
"hymns" in the public worship service are given. From McNaugher's The
Psalms in Worship.

M'WARD, ROBERT
A Covenanter's Response to Wicked Rulers in Church and State
(and Unjust Taxation); Containing Some Comforting Words to Those Who are
Suffering at the Hand of These Beasts, for the Sake of Christ and Truth (1805 edition)
M'Ward was a persecuted and
exiled Protester (exiled for preaching, in 1661, "against the overturning
of the Covenanted Reformation by Parliament," (Dictionary of Scottish
Church History & Theology, p. 538), -- who "collected and arranged the papers of his
preceptor, Samuel Rutherford, and gave the world his (Rutherford's--RB) Letters." He "strongly opposed the Resolutions," (and the
Resolutioners) and the many other forms of public backsliding and covenant
breaking prevalent in his day (Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 342). Walker writes,
Here is a little circle
of the exiles in Holland, Brown, Livingstone, M'Ward. How do they occupy
themselves in their exile? Well, they do not forget their friends in Scotland.
They are kept well informed of all that is taking place in their native land,
and they are ever ready with their counsels and encouragements. M'Ward in
particular keeps up a busy fire of letter and pamphlets. "The Banders Disbanded," (on how it was
scandalous and sinful to obtain a pretended liberty to preach and administer
the Sacraments under the wicked rulers of his day--RB), or, "The Poor Man's Cup of Cold Water (Ministered to the
Saints and Sufferers for Christ in Scotland, Who Are Amidst the Scorching
Flames of the Fiery Trial)," or, "A
Testimony Against Paying of the Cess (to an Unjust and Unlawful Government or
Wicked Rulers)," vigorously expressed, form a sort of fiery
cross among the more resolute of the Scottish suffers... No man had more to do
than M'Ward with the indulgence conflicts" (Ibid., p. 342).
All three books mentioned above,
by Walker, are contained in this book.
These works were written "to encourage
resistance to those whom he believed were usurpers of power in the Church of
Scotland. He asserted that it was not, as then constituted, 'of the genus
Church at all, -- that, by its mere physical force-raid on the real Church of
Scotland, it has proved itself to be absolutely devoid of ecclesiastical right,'"
notes David Lachman (DSCH&T,
p. 538).
The title of the 1805 edition, which is
reprinted here, was "A Collection of Tracts"; we have added the new
title to better reflect the contents of this volume. 288 pages.

Earnest Contendings for the Faith (1723)
McWard "strongly opposed the Resolutions" and "for a sermon
preached at Glasgow from Amos 3:2, in February, 1661, he was banished to
Holland... He collected and arranged the papers of his preceptor, Samuel
Rutherford, and gave to the world his 'Letters'" (Johnston, Treasury of
the Scottish Covenant, p. 342). The Dictionary of Scottish Church
History and Theology (p. 537-38) also notes
that McWard "studied at St. Andrews where he was a favorite of Samuel
Rutherford" and that "when Rutherford went to London as a
Commissioner to the Westminster Assembly, McWard accompanied his as an
amanuensis... was a zealous Protester... in 1661 he preached against an
overturning of the Covenanted Reformation by Parliament, entering a protest in
heaven that he desired to be free from the guilt thereof. He was imprisoned
'for sedition and treasonable preaching... he helped with the editing and
publication of Rutherford's Examen Arminianismi (Utrecht, 1668)... wrote several tracts to encourage
resistance to those whom he believed were usurpers of power in the Church of
Scotland. He asserted that is was not, as then constituted, 'of the genus
Church at all, -- that, by its mere physical force-raid on the real Church of
Scotland, it has proved itself to be absolutely devoid of ecclesiastical
rights.' ... such publications rendered McWard, with his close friend John
Brown of Wamphray, odious to the regime of Charles II, and diligent efforts
were made to have him expelled from Holland... He continued zealous against the
Indulgences, opposing the efforts of Robert Fleming, his successor, at
conciliation (see Earnest Contendings for the Faith)... Wodrow characterized him as 'a person of great
knowledge, zeal, learning, and remarkable ministerial abilities.'" The
answers to Robert Fleming's proposals for union with the indulged (found in Earnest
Contendings and as set in the historical
context noted above) exhibit the true spirit of the covenanting movement in
regard to numerous church issues (such as separation, schism, covenanted
obligations, the nature of the visible church, attainments, etc.).
The principles set forth by McWard, as a faithful defender of the Covenanted
Reformation, can be easily applied to the current state of declension in the
modern Presbyterian and Reformed churches. This makes McWard's book an
exceedingly helpful aid, regarding a broad spectrum of practical church issues,
for those seeking to maintain the original (as held to by most of the
Westminster Divines) covenanted testimony in our day. 416 pages, this book
contains a glossary and index.

The Original Preface to Samuel Rutherford's Letters (1664, 1783)
M'Ward was a disciple and close friend of Samuel Rutherford and he acted as his
private secretary at the Westminster Assembly. He was also the publisher of the
first edition of Rutherford's Letters, in 1664. This publication
came just three years after Rutherford's death. M'Ward hoped to strengthen the
hands of the persecuted Covenanters with the publication of his preface and the
release of Rutherford's Letters. In this
preface M'Ward sets forth the context (and theological genius) of not only
S.R.'s letters, but also of the turbulent times that drew forth some of the
greatest theological literature ever produced. Among these works we find the
Westminster Standards, the "Solemn League and Covenant" and a mass of
other Presbyterian/Covenanter/Puritan writings that have been handed down to
posterity, from these very days. These men knew (as M'Ward demonstrates in this
preface) that the covenanted cause of Christ would prosper, though it was
suffering a great setback at this time. Additionally, though these covenanted
Presbyterians were blessed with towering and sanctified intellectual abilities,
they were no ivy tower theologians; each, to a man (almost), were more than
willing to suffer and/or die for the covenanted cause of Christ. M'Ward's
preface is an invaluable aid to understanding these men and their times.
Furthermore, this is the only place that you can obtain a copy of this
exceedingly rare and valuable piece of testimony to the covenanted Reformation,
as our "rare bound photocopy edition" is the first reprinting of this
work in many years. Also included in this work is Rutherford's "Testimony
to the Covenanted Work of Reformation, (from 1638, to 1649) in Britain and
Ireland" and a section from "Some of the Last Words of Mr.
Rutherford; containing some Advices and Exhortations to his Friends and
Relations, during his sickness, before his death, February the last, 1661"
-- which further corroborates the large body of other evidence (cf. George
Gillespie's dying testimony at the end of his Works, volume 2, for one) testifying to those glorious
truths that were foremost in the minds of the most prominent Covenanters, even
moments before they eternally entered the presence of their Almighty Father. It
may also be of interest to note that M'Ward's original preface to Rutherford's
letters (which is 45 pages in length) has not been included in any of the
recent Banner of Truth reprintings of Rutherford's Letters -- even the edited version that is now circulating.
We have also added this preface and other information to our photocopy editions
of Rutherford's complete Letters
($US29.00 HP, $US24.98 P) -- the only unedited edition now available. Enjoy the
feast!

The Suppressed Truth About the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln (c.
1922).
McCarty was an ex-Romanist turned Freemason, thus we are noting right up front
that this is not a Christian book and should be read with extreme care (for
much that is evil is mixed in with the useful information the book contains).
We are making this book available because it contains hard to find research and
documentation of the intrigues that are regularly practiced by Papists and
Jesuits alike, in their quest for world domination (corroborating the
statements of other famous ex-Romanists like the ex-Priest turned Presbyterian,
Charles Chiniquy -- who was a friend of Abraham Lincoln (cf. Chiniquy's Fifty
Years In the Church of Rome, chapter 61, [$19.97 P, $34.00 HP]).
McCarty's book demonstrates that Rome was behind Lincoln's assassination, as
well as chronicling other assassinations and assassination attempts on American
Presidents in which Rome was involved. It also contains a copy of the wicked
Jesuit Oath and much else that implicates both Rome and the Jesuits for the
ecclesiastical Antichrists they are. Noteworthy in this regard is the following
statement from the author's introduction,
I feel safe in stating that nowhere else can be found in one book the connected presentation of the story leading up to the death of Abraham Lincoln, which was instigated by the "Black" pope, the general of the Jesuit Order, camouflaged by the "White" pope, Pius IXth, aided and abetted and financed by other "Divine Righters" of Europe, and finally consummated by the Roman Hierarchy and their paid agents in this country and French Canada on "Good Friday" night, April 14th, 1865, at Ford's Theatre, Washington, D.C. I am convinced that if this knowledge can be given adequate distribution and placed in possession of the boys and girls of the public elementary schools, for whom it is especially designed to reach, that the wicked boast of the Jesuits and their lay agents, the Knights of Columbus, to "MAKE AMERICA CATHOLIC" can never be accomplished.
Also demonstrates that "from the earliest times the Roman Church
advocated human slavery," which "in short, was a basis for the wealth
of the Papacy" (p. 71). 255 pages.

First Amendment a Master Piece of Satan
Contra antiestablishmentarianism. This article was sent to 278 members of the
Canadian Parliament. It debunks the idea that it is right for majorities to
determine law through their elected officials in opposition to God's holy law.
It also opposes the false theories of human rights found in the first amendment
to the Constitution of the United States. In short, and in agreement with both
the Belgic and Westminster Confessions, it opposes "the presumption that a
government, ordained of God, can be neutral, and can make no law stating that
Jesus Christ is King of the Nation, and that it can hold all religions, which
are repugnant to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, equal before it."

Covenanters in America: The Voice of Their Testimony on Present Moral
Issues (1892)
This books gives some historical information, but the bulk of it sets forth the
distinctive beliefs of a branch of the Reformed Presbyterian church. Some
topics covered include public social covenanting, political dissent, divine
psalmody, the Sabbath, national reform and evangelism, education and more. We
note that the chapter on temperance is clearly in error and that a much
stronger and more vital Covenanter testimony is set forth in the Act,
Declaration and Testimony for the Whole of Our Covenanted Reformation...
emitted by the Reformed Presbytery at Ploughlandhead, Scotland, 1761; together
with the Supplements adopted by the Reformed Presbytery at this date, June 2d,
1876 (found in this section under "Reformed Presbytery").

Sketches of the Covenanters (1913)
Stirring
accounts of sacrifice and martyrdom for the Reformed Faith that will bring
tears to eyes of all but the most backslidden. Follows the chain of events which gave Scotland two
Reformations and a Revolution. John Knox, the
National Covenant, The Solemn League and Covenant, the Westminster Assembly,
the Field Meetings (conventicles) and the "Killing Times," and much
more are all covered. The history of many great battles for Christ
and His royal rights are accurately recounted in this moving chronicle of
Reformation struggles and martyrdom. These
accounts of men, women and children who were willing to die for the truth of
Christ's Kingship over all things are as amazing and edifying as any you will
ever read!
This
book also sheds much light upon the warfare of Christ's bride (with the dragon)
for true Scriptural liberty, while telling the moving story of some of the most
prominent and/or faithful Christians (Rutherford, Renwick, Cameron, Cargill,
"the Society People," et al.) since the days of the Apostles. This is
one of our best history books, and is highly recommended! It is great for home
schooling, history classes and various other learning situations, as it
contains convenient review questions at the end of each chapter.
Furthermore, it is written in an easy-to-read and
engaging style, which makes it one of the best introductions to the
Covenanters and the periods of the first and second Reformations in the British
Isles that is available. 412 pages.

Calvinism in History (1882)
An easy-reading introduction to Calvinism highly praised by both Loraine
Boettner and R.J. Rushdoony. Covers Calvinism as a political force (in the
world and throughout history), as a political force specifically in the United
States, as a moral force, and as an evangelizing force.
"This book
sure-footedly guides us over the terrain of Calvinism's broadsweeping political
and moral influence, concluding that Calvinism's evangelistic power results
from the doctrines of grace, particularly justification by faith alone."
Dr. Joel Beeke
"I do not know
of any other book that sets forth so effectively and yet in such a brief form
the real nature of Calvinism and the effect that it has had in history."

MCKNIGHT, W.J.
Concerning Close Communion
A strong little book (of 52 pages) that should be considered by all
those seeking the purity and peace of the church. Holds to the old covenanted Presbyterian position. Justifies the
maintaining of the separate existence of a denomination that will faithfully
testify against sin, and the excluding from the Lord's table those that do not
so testify. Gives numerous examples of backsliding in regard to specific truths
of Scripture. Proclaims that "the Word of God teaches unequivocally that
the Commandments are equally binding." This
includes the first commandment as it relates to Christ's Kingship over the
nations (and dissent from immoral civil governments which will not recognize
and obey Christ as King and law giver); and the second commandment concerning
purity of worship (as against "all devising, counselling, using, and any
wise approving, any religious worship not instituted by God Himself," such
as the use of songs other than the Psalms and the Popish use of musical
instruments in public worship). Maintains
that violation of these commandments are grounds for barring a person from the
Lord's table. Shows how close communion is nothing
more than the old Presbyterian view, in keeping with the Westminster Confession
of Faith and John Calvin when he stated "We are only contending
about the true and lawful constitution of the church, required in the communion
not only of the sacraments (which are the signs of profession) but also
especially of doctrine" (John Calvin, Institutes 2.12). Also includes an excellent discussion of
essentials and non-essentials, as they relate to the Lord's supper and
salvation. The best short book on the Lord's
supper that we have seen. Written by an RPCNA minister in
large easy-to-read type.

Covenanting, Communion and Confessions: With a Short
Summary of the Westminster Confession of Faith
Deals with the terms of communion as they relate to the
Reformation Creeds and the Westminster Confession. Defends creedalism and the historic progress evident
in the faithful creeds. Touches on covenanting. Contains
a useful summary of every chapter of the Westminster Confession of Faith.
In classic Reformed Presbyterian style, the author notes the testimony of the
martyrs in leaving "a noble example for us and our posterity to follow, in
contending for all divine truth, and in testifying against all contrary evils,
which may exist in the corrupt constitutions of either church or state."

The Psalms in Worship
Dr. David Freeman (who was John Murray's pastor in Philadelphia) said that the Psalms in Worship was the most comprehensive treatment of this subject to
be found anywhere. This volume (of
almost 600 pages) consists of material presented at two conventions in 1905,
promoting the claims of the Psalms in worship. Two articles covering each of 27
related topics comprise this volume, making a total of 54 separate papers (all
thoroughly indexed and including a new appendix added by the publisher).
Articles included range from argumentative discussions of a doctrinal and
critical kind (defending exclusive Psalmody, the regulative principle of
worship, etc.), to broader discussions along historical, literary, and
practical lines. This is a one of a kind
publication and nothing else like it is available today.

MEDE, JOSEPH
The Apostasy of the Latter Times (1641, 1845 edition)
The
title continues: "In which, (according to
divine prediction) the world should wonder after the Beast, the Mystery of
Iniquity should so far prevail over the Mystery of Godliness, whorish Babylon
over the virgin-Church of Christ; as that the visible glory of the True Church
should be much clouded, the True unstained Christian Faith corrupted, the
purity of true worship polluted. Or, The Gentiles Theology of Demons, i.e.
inferior divine powers: Supposed to be mediators between God and man: Revived
in the Latter times amongst Christians, in worshipping of Angels, deifying and
invocating of Saints, adoring and templing of Relics, bowing down to Images,
worshipping of Crosses, etc. All which, together with a true discovery of the
Nature, Origin, Progress, of the great, fatal, and solemn Apostasy, are
cleared. Delivered in public some years since upon I Tim. 4:1,2,3."
Birks,
in his introduction writes, "for close and
varied research, happily applied to illustrate an important warning of
Scripture, few works can claim equal praise. No treatise, perhaps, has had a
more powerful and lasting effect in unmasking the Christian idolatries of
former ages, and thus forming a strong bulwark against the proud pretensions of
the Roman Antichrist" (p. i).
Solves the "666" mystery! We have also added Twisse's preface from the 1641
edition. 343 pages.

Seminary of Geneva, Merle D'Aubigne is best know for his massive History of the
Great Reformation. Concerning this book, Baird, in the introduction, writes,
"it would be hard to find in any language an equal number (of essays) that
can be compared with them." Furthermore, he notes that they "possess
one grand characteristic: that of a glorious baptism, if I may so express
myself, into the spirit of the Reformation." Includes Merle D'Aubigne's
"Family Worship," "Lutheranism and Calvinism," and fifteen
more articles.

History of the Reformation of the Sixteenth Century (in 5 Volumes, 1846)
The author calls the Reformation: "one of the greatest revolutions that
has ever been accomplished in human affairs." He also notes that it was
"one of the greatest outpourings of the life that cometh from God,"
whose "influence is still visible on every side." Moreover, he points
out that this is "not the history of a mere party," but rather
"the history of the Reformation addresses itself to all Christians, or rather
to all mankind," for it "bears the mark of regeneration of the human
race, of a religious and social change emanating from God himself."
Furthermore, Merle D'Aubigne notes that this is the only edition that he
personally revised and acknowledges "this translation as the only faithful
expression of my (his) thoughts in the English language," and recommends
it as such to all his readers.

Merle D'Aubigne, J. H.
History of the Reformation in Europe in the Time of Calvin (8 volumes, 1880 edition)
This engaging set, comprising eight volumes,
is the sequel to J.H. Merle D'Aubigne's History of the Reformation of the
Sixteenth Century (in 5 Volumes,
1846, [$US34.91, cerlox bound photocopy; $US89.00, Hardcover photocopy)
In his typical easy-to-read,
captivating style, the author resumes where he had left off in his other five
volumes (which focused more on Luther and the period of Reform up to 1531),
entering, in this set, upon the more developed Reformation thought of Calvin,
Knox, et al.
The preface (in volume one) of this important
work states it this way,
At the conclusion
of the preface to the first volume of the History of the Reformation, the author wrote, 'This work will consist of four volumes,
or at the most five, which will appear successively.' These five volumes have
appeared. In them are described the heroic times of Luther, and the effects
produced in Germany and other countries by the characteristic doctrine of that
reformer -- justification by faith.
They present a picture of that great epoch which contained in the germ the
revival of Christianity in the last three centuries. The author has thus
completed the task he had assigned himself; but there still remained another.
The times of Luther
were followed by those of Calvin. He, like his great predecessor, undertook to
search the Scriptures, and in them he found the same truth and the same life;
but a different character distinguishes his work.
The
renovation of the individual, of the Church, and of the human race, is his
theme. If the Holy Ghost kindles the
lamp of truth in man, it is (according to Calvin) 'to the end that the entire
man should be transformed.' -- 'In the kingdom of Christ,' he says, 'it is only
the new man that flourishes and has any vigor, and whom we ought to take into
account.' This renovation is, at the same time, an
enfranchisement; and we might assign, as a motto to the reformation
accomplished by Calvin, as well as to apostolical Christianity itself, these
words of Jesus Christ: The truth shall make you free. (John 8:32)...
The
reformation of the sixteenth century restored to the human race what the middle
ages had stolen from them; it
delivered them from the traditions, laws, and despotism of the papacy; it put
an end to the minority and tutelage in which Rome claimed to keep mankind for
ever; and by calling upon man to establish his faith not on the word of a
priest, but on the infallible Word of God, and by announcing to every one free
access to the Father through the new and saving way -- Christ Jesus, it proclaimed and brought about the hour of Christian
manhood...
Luther transformed
princes into heroes of the faith, and we have described with admiration their
triumphs at Augsburg and elsewhere. The reformation
of Calvin was addressed particularly to the people, among whom it raised up
martyrs until the time came when it was to send forth the spiritual conquerors
of the world. For three
centuries it has been producing, in the social condition of the nations that
have received it, transformations unknown to former times. And still at this
very day, and now perhaps more than ever, it
imparts to the men who accept it a spirit of power which makes them chosen
instruments, fitted to propagate truth, morality, and civilisation to the ends
of the earth.
In this extensive
chronicle of international Reformation the author has made use
of the archives in Geneva, Calvin's Latin letters, numerous French documents of
the sixteenth century and many other sources not
readily available (especially to English readers). This has
greatly increased the value of this work, as a great deal of this information
is not available elsewhere in English.
Moreover, the broad historical and geographical range (from the Hugenots to the
Netherlands to Norway and on) covered herein, coupled with the author's
extensive research (in various languages) makes this an unique treasure for
those seeking to "walk in the footsteps of the flock" (Song of
Solomon 1:8). In fact, there are few other
large Reformation histories, written by Calvinists, that rival this set.

The Prospects of True Christians in a Sinful World (1831)
A sermon showing that "true Christians who live according to the
principles of Christ's kingdom, may expect tribulation in the world;" and
that Christ has overcome the world, thus we may expect ultimate victory.
"In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have

there pain in the world?" Milligan was pastor of a Reformed Presbyterian

The Evil of Relaxed Discipline in the Church (1841)
Many today actually believe and preach that relaxed church discipline is a
blessing to the church. Not only this, they cry down Presbyterianism in general
-- the only biblical means to faithfully purge the church of errors in faith
and practice. History is full of heretics that would do away with biblical
presbyterian church government -- and why not, such governments would never
tolerate the very heretics that try to overthrow them. A lecture excerpted from
the book Lectures on the Principles of the Second Reformation,
edited by Andrew Symington.

Warfield states, "The fundamental authority for the study of
the work of the Assembly for the period covered by it is, of course, the volume
of its Minutes edited by Drs. A.F. Mitchell and John Struthers." This work was also called the best book concerning
the Assembly by Gregg Singer. It was compiled from transcripts originally
procured by a committee of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. An invaluable aid for all those who love creedal
Christianity, as it is revealed in the Holy Scriptures. A very rare

MITCHELL, ALEXANDER F.
The Westminster Assembly: Its History and Standards
In the first three lectures,
the author has given a succinct account of English Puritanism from its origin
to the meeting of the Westminster Assembly, and in the tenth lecture, he has
given a similar account of the history of doctrine in the British Churches
during the same period. The seven intervening lectures were prepared in accord
with the author's desire to complete his researches on the Westminster
Assembly.
Throughout this work, Mitchell has endeavored
to give prominence to aspects of this magnificent period in Puritan history
which have hitherto been generally overlooked and to treat more briefly of
those which have been previously dwelt on -- making this the ideal companion
volume to Hetherington's History of the
Westminster Assembly and Gillespie's
notes taken at this assembly (found in his Works).
Moreover, Mitchell writes in an irenic
manner, making this a perfect introductory volume to
Puritanism and the work of the Assembly.
Mitchell notes the importance of the Westminster
Assembly in the following manner,
Richard
Baxter, who was perhaps as competent as any of their contemporaries to give an
impartial verdict, does not hesitate to affirm that "the divines there
congregated were men of eminent learning and godliness, ministerial ability and
fidelity; and being not worthy,' he modestly adds, 'to be one of them myself, I
may the more freely speak that truth which I know, even in the face of malice
and envy, that so far as I am able to judge by the information of all history...
the Christian world
since the days of the apostles had never a Synod of more excellent divines." (p. 118).
Thus, it has been noted by
many, that next to the Scripture itself, there is probably more to be gained
from the study of this segment of history (and the works of the men God called
to produce the Puritan intellect and the Westminster family of documents) than
any other single period of history -- right up to the present era. Mitchell's account of this
age of brilliance is a veritable information cornucopia in which all lovers of
Puritanism, the Westminster Assembly, and especially the truth of Christ (which
these our forefathers in the faith so boldly proclaimed) can readily take
delight! "The Westminster Assembly, if it does not form a
landmark in the history of our common Protestantism, must at least be admitted
to constitute an epoch, and a notable one, in the history of Puritanism,"
notes Mitchell. Don't miss this fine historical account. 519 pages.

MORRIS, EDWARD D.
Theology of the Westminster Symbols A commentary --
historical, doctrinal and practical, on the Confession of Faith and Catechisms
and the related formularies of the Presbyterian Churches
Published in 1900, this massive
857 page commentary has a later American flavor to it. The author
has desired not
merely to set forth the Presbyterian theology of the seventeenth century as
embodied in these Symbols, but as well to indicate (though only in outline) the
interesting evolution of that theology from the historic germ, to describe its
normal growth through the succeeding ages, and to
exhibit as far as practicable its remarkable effect and fruitage as seen in the
belief and teachings of living Presbyterianism.

MURRAY, IAIN H.
The Puritan Hope: Revival and the Interpretation of
Prophecy
One of the most thoroughly documented historical books on
eschatology and its connection to revival and missions. A powerfully encouraging study of the biblical and
Reformed teaching on the Christian's hope in this world and in the prospect of
the triumph of the gospel. Shows how the optimistic eschatology of Scripture
made the Puritans of old, mighty men of valour in battling for the kingdom and
glory of God. This is a book that is hard to put down. Published by Banner of
Truth.

Here is a quote from pages 142-143 of Iain
Murray's The Puritan Hope: Revival and the Interpretation of Prophecy,
"We have already stated above
the conviction that the theological impetus which lay behind the new missionary
era came from the Puritan divinity of the seventeenth century. As this has been
so little recognized it deserves further consideration, both in regard to the
general beliefs of the missionary leaders which must be classified as
Calvinistic, and also in regard to their particular view of unfulfilled
prophecy. In both areas, the general and the particular, the best expositions
of their faith were those written some hundred or more years before their day.
On the printed page the
influence of the Puritans had lived on and many of the leaders of the
eighteenth-century revival were indebted to them for their first understanding
of historic Christianity. George
Whitefield's debt to Matthew Henry was matched by William Grimshaw's to Thomas
Brooks and John Owen; by Augustus Toplady's to Thomas Manton; and so on. Nor
was this mid-eighteenth-century return to the Puritans limited to the clergy;
it equally affected the common people, the change in whose reading habits is
frequently alluded to by those who reported the several revivals. Samuel Blair,
writing in 1744, says:
'Those awakened were much given
to reading in the Holy Scriptures and other good books. Excellent books that
had lain by much neglected, were then much perused and lent from one to
another: and it was a peculiar satisfaction to people to find how exactly the
doctrines they heard daily preached, harmonized with the doctrines maintained
and taught by great and godly men in other parts and former times.'"

Revival and Revivalism: The Making and Marring of American Evangelicalism
1750-1858
"In Revival and Revivalism Iain H. Murray has produced yet another
historical study of outstanding quality. Against the rich background of
narrative of God-given revivals in North America, he traces the landmark
changes in both understanding and practices which took place between the middle
18th and 19th centuries... culminating in the widespread influence of Charles
Grandison Finney. This is not merely a record of the church's past. Rather,
those who read it will soon realise that it provides a key to understanding
contemporary evangelicalism and its deep needs. It may not be too much to claim
that this volume is essential reading for Christians who desire true revival in
the churches of our own day" (Dr. Sinclair Ferguson from the back cover).
Noll is also apropos, when he states, "Murray's main point is also
theologically compelling: when religion becomes something that humans work up
for God (i.e. 'revivalism') instead of something God graciously bestows upon
repentant sinners (i.e. 'revival'), the integrity of the faith is at
stake."

Spurgeon v. Hyper Calvinism: The Battle for Gospel Preaching
In speaking of how this book, and the book The Forgotten Spurgeon developed,
the author notes: "The two books deal with two quite different
controversies although they are not altogether unrelated. Arminianism, the main
theme of The Forgotten Spurgeon, sets aside the scriptural teaching of the
sovereignty of God in salvation. All men are equally condemned in sin but, for
reasons unknown to us and to the praise of his grace, God does not deal equally
with those who are equally undeserving. The testimony of Scripture ought to be unmistakable;
'as many as were ordained to eternal life believed' (Acts 13:48). But does the
denial of Arminianism mean that God has no love for all? that Christ is not to
be proclaimed as the Saviour in whom all are called to trust? Does the
particularity of grace mean that there can be no universal entreaties, no
gospel for 'every creature'? Hyper-Calvinism answers 'Yes" to these
questions and in so doing it constitutes a serious hindrance to the progress of
the evangel." This book, citing from such "masters in Israel" as
John Calvin, Samuel Rutherford and John Brown (of Wamphray), answers the
Hyper-Calvinistic challenge. It should be especially interesting for Baptists,
as it deals much with their heritage, as does Murray's Forgotten Spurgeon ($14.95).

MURRAY, JOHN & WILLIAM YOUNG
The Forgotten Minority: The Minority Report on Song in the
Public Worship of God
This
report, defending exclusive Psalmody (on the
basis of the classic understanding of the regulative
principle of worship), was submitted to the fourteenth General
Assembly of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC) in 1947. It was subsequently buried, ignored and has, as many
had hoped, become long forgotten -- until now! It exposes how the OPC flies in
the face of the original Westminster Standards, the worship heritage of
Presbyterianism and most importantly Scripture.

MURRAY, MATTHEW
The Millennium: Peace, Prosperity and National Covenanting (1879)
This is the Reformation (especially
second Reformation)
view of postmillennialism as set forth and explained in terms of the national
blessings and gospel purity that will be present when the millennium arrives.
Some items discussed include:
1.
The visible state of unity in the church during the millennium
2.
National covenanting.
3.
How kings will be "nursing fathers" (Isa. 49:23) to the church during
this blessed period of history.
4.
How "all nations shall serve him" (Ps 72:11) in that day (and there
are no nations in heaven -- so this must be speaking of what will take place on
earth before Christ returns, contrary to amillennialism)!
In short, the
millennium will be marked by visible civil and ecclesiastical obedience to
Christ as King! This is exactly the opposite of the situation that
we are presently experiencing -- for we live in the days of the great apostasy
(2 Thes. 2:3). The church (visible) is in disarray and has grievously
backslidden from her previous Reformation attainments. No nation is covenanted
with Christ (as a nation), but instead,
"The kings of
the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the
LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and
cast away their cords from us" (Ps. 2:2-3).
The nations and many churches despise
Christ's royal law and He now "vex(es) them in his sore displeasure"
-- but when the millennial glory arrives the
river of His Spirit will fill the earth (Ezek 47:1-12) and His high priestly
prayer will be answered (John 17:21: "That they all may be one;
as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us:
that the world may believe that
thou hast sent me.").
This is a greatly encouraging
introduction to this topic and the best short treatment of this subject that we
offer! Excerpted from the Original Covenanter and Contending Witness magazine (volumes 2:4-6).
