The Puritan Hard Drive - Best Reference Tool Ever!
You will be floored by this
product. Amazing!
- John Hendryx, Monergism
Books
In the history of the church's sanctification I don't believe there has been a more valuable extra-biblical resource and tool than the Puritan Hard Drive.
It holds some of the most priceless Reformed works of God-centered and Christ-glorifying truth that were ever penned.
Most students, ministers and scholars of the Bible would never personally acquire even half the literal number of books on the Puritan Hard Drive, much less the extreme caliber of its contents.
In God's providence modern day Christians have been chosen to be the recipients of both a theological and practical blessing. May we not squander it.
- Matthew McMahon, Ph.D. A Puritan's Mind
I want you to know that I have enjoyed my Puritan Hard Drive immensely.
I simply could not have imagined such a resource before getting my hands on it!
To have that much information from a consistent, biblical, orthodox, and gospel-centered point of view is simply astonishing.
Anyone who admires the Puritans simply must have the Puritan Hard Drive.
From Pastors to Ph.D. candidates, there is simply nothing else out there that puts so much at your fingertips.
What an amazing tool for pastors... thank you for your work.
Soli Deo Gloria!
- Dr. Voddie Baucham, Jr., Grace Family Baptist Church (Spring, TX) http://www.sermonaudio.com/go/38367 and http://www.gracefamilybaptist.net
The Puritan Hard Drive is an exquisite piece of work.
The purchaser of this fine product will have at his fingertips more of the best Reformed literature than he can probably ever get around to reading.
Truly, if a Christian wants to invest wisely in his own growth, this is the best investment he can make at this time.
More than highly recommended!

* It is SWRB's
opinion that Ages has done an excellent job in making various Reformed works
available on CD, so much so that we also distribute a number of their CDs at
discounts. Thus, please don't make more out of our publishing this comment than
is warranted, as this is a comment we received from one of our customers and it
expresses his opinion. As for Ages' work, we rejoice whenever the truth is
published, whether through others or through SWRB (as we play only a very small
part in the revival of classic Reformation, Puritan and Covenanter thought that
is now taking place worldwide through God's marvelous grace). The publication
of the best Reformers and Puritans of the past is one of the greatest needs of
our time, as this extends the blessings that come through faithful preachers
and authors into our day and into the future. Lord willing, the growth in the
publishing of faithful works from the past will help stem the tide of the great
declension and unfaithfulness which we are now witnessing all around us, even
(sadly) among many churches that still call themselves "Presbyterian"
and/or "Reformed." So please pray together with us that our Lord will
multiple the number of faithful publishers and publications, and that He will
give many the heart to stand for the truth no matter the consequences (as He
has done for our faithful forefathers, who resisted Satan and sin unto blood
and even to martyrdom in many cases). -- RB.
"SWRB's
Puritan and Reformation CD libraries are an invaluable source for the study of
the history and theology of classic Reformation theology. The collection is
remarkable not only for depth of content, but also for the rarity of many of
the works. Most seminary libraries will not have even a percentage of the works
available on these CD-ROMs. I cannot imagine anyone working in Reformation /
historical theology that would not want to use the Puritan and Reformed
libraries!"

"I
just received your CD collection. One bit of advice: you should instruct your
customers to take about 1 week off just to peruse the tables of contents for
these CD's, followed by another week off, in order to recover from the
state of shock in which they will find themselves.
In
all seriousness, this collection is almost impossible to describe. It has to be
seen to be believed. As a pastor, my library has just increased
dramatically.
As a Ph.D. student in Puritan and Post-Reformation studies, I have immediate
access to many of the same works for which I would normally need to access
through rare book rooms of theological libraries.
Thank
you for this labor of love. Thank you for making it accessible, both
financially and technologically. May the Lord richly bless you for this service
to his people."

invaluable as a tool of scholarship. So once again I commend you brothers for making
it available."

I'm robbing you!

SWRB CD comment from Dr. Moore:
This
collection of 62 CDs is a truly astounding accomplishment. There is nothing like
this available to the ordinary Christian on the whole face of the earth.
Now,
for the first time ever, ordinary Christians can have direct and near
effortless access to the very cream of Puritan and Reformed, as well as
Covenanter, literature.
These
books are often in fascinating first editions and many are electronically
linked and indexed for the first time. The ordinary Christian may here dig
into a simply staggering wealth of literature, from devotional and sermonic
material to technical and scholarly works. Even in the days of the Long Reformation
itself ordinary Christians didn't get to see this kind of library -- most
couldn't read for a start, and even those who could, would never have been able
to afford to buy even a hundredth part of the material on these CDs. Truly we
are without excuse!
And
the significance of this collection goes even beyond that. No longer do we have
to wait for modern Reformed publishing houses to predict that a particular
Reformation or Puritan book will be sufficiently popular to make it economical
to reprint, or to deem it "safe" enough to be let loose on the modern
evangelical church. Rather, we are now able to see for ourselves the whole
range of the Puritan and Reformed publishing enterprise, including views that are
usually suppressed by most modern devotees of "Puritan" piety!
Buy
these CDs while you can, and find out for yourself what the First and Second
Reformations were really all about! You'll be truly amazed, and, by God's
grace, will grow from being an ordinary Christian to being an extraordinary
one. What they used to say of the Puritan John Flavel's preaching, can be
said of these CDs: they are "hissing hot"!

"This
side of eternity I'll never be able to repay the favor you have done mankind by
bringing these... CDs together.
The
first week of reading I grew more as a Christian reading those rich, pure Gospel
Commentators than I have in 18 years of Christian life. After reading some of
the Puritan CDs I have to get the Reformation set if it kills me. A fire is
burning within me. These... CDs are liable to start a revival fire unseen in
any generation... the Gospel in its pure form is seen in these... CDs.
Sir,
I cant say enough. What a treasure! I'll never be able to repay you this side
of heaven, but when we get there I am sure you will see the rich fruits of your
labor. God bless you for not being money hungry but wanting to see Christians
grow in the Lord... I love you even though we have never met, you have
helped me in my Christian walk tremendously with these... CDs.
I
am not bragging on the flesh, I am just giving honor where honor is due. The
Holy Ghost will take these CDs and light a fire unseen and unheard of. God
bless you all at Still Waters."

I am amazed at the quality and quantity of
the literature...
I

this CD work is.

Life of William Cunningham (1871)
Cunningham was Principal and Professor of Theology and Church History at New
College, Edinburgh, during the mid-1800's. His four volume Works include the
magisterial two volume set Historical Theology, Discussions on Church
Principles and The Reformers and the Theology of the Reformation. A volume of
his Sermons is also in print. In Iain Murray's introduction to Historical
Theology he points out that "[i]n the days of Cunningham and Bannerman,
New College, Edinburgh, rose to be the finest theological college in
Europe." Furthermore, concerning Cunningham's work in the General Assembly
of 1832, he writes, "and once more a young man arose to deliver a historic
speech. Like Begg he was a new-comer to the Assembly's debates, but his tall
figure and mass of curly hair quickly identified him as 'Cunningham of
Greenock.' When he sat down two hours later there was no mistaking the feeling
of the Moderates. "That's Andrew come back," exclaimed one! Others
were forced to think of young George Gillespie of the 17th century, who, having
just arrived in London, in riding boots and with whip still in hand, delivered
such a speech in the Westminster Assembly that his opponent the great Selden
declared: "This young man, by a single speech, has swept away the learning
and labour of my life!" "Those who heard Cunningham's speech that
day", write his biographers, ëspeak of it with wonder to this day. Such
power, wealth, and precision of language they had never heard.'" "In
his first six years at Edinburgh he read and carefully classified 530 distinct
volumes, not to mention pamphlets or magazines." Cunningham's works are
still much sought after today.

Withhold Not Correction
The title is taken from Proverbs 28:13. It is this biblical command that the
author of this straightforward book holds up as a guide for all parents who
experience doubt and indecision in their roles as disciplinarians. The author,
a father and pastor, also exposes the emptiness of much contemporary advice on
child-rearing. Each chapter contains review and response question making it an
ideal tool for either group study or personal development. Jay Adams wrote the
forward.

RAYNOLDS, JOHN
A Defense of the Judgement of
the Reformed Churches That a Man May Lawfully Not Only Put Away His Wife for
Her Adultery, But Also Marry Another (1610)
This title defends the classic Reformed position
and will be very useful in refuting the errors (on this point) of everyone from
Rome and the Jesuits to the Protestant Reformed churches of our day. Compares
the Reformed position with that of Rome, examines the Scriptures, the church
fathers, and answers Romish objections. Also, refutes (in 70 pages) the Jesuit
Bellarmine (and others), demonstrating how Bellarmine, "depraveth
Scriptures, misalleges Fathers, and abuses reason to the perverting of the truth
of God, and poisoning of his church with error." The historic Reformed
position defended in this book was later summarized in the Westminster
Confession of Faith, (chapter 24),
V. Adultery or fornication, committed after a
contract, being detected before marriage, giveth just occasion to the innocent
party to dissolve that contract. In the case of adultery after marriage, it is
lawful for the innocent party to sue out a divorce, and after the divorce to
marry another, as if the offending party were dead.
VI. Although the corruption of man be such as is
apt to study arguments, unduly to put asunder those whom God hath joined
together in marriage; yet nothing but adultery, or such willful desertion as
can no way be remedied by the Church or civil magistrate, is cause sufficient
of dissolving the bond of marriage; wherein a public and orderly course of
proceeding is to be observed; and the persons concerned in it, not left to
their own wills and discretion in their own case.

Biblical Worship
"The Protestant Reformation was a conflict over many critical
issues. And of all the issues contested between Romanists and the reformers, no
issue was more crucial than the question of true worship" (Reed, John
Knox the Forgotten Reformer, p. 37).
This book explains the two preeminent characteristics of all faithful corporate
worship, as seen both in the OT and in the NT. It also contains an excellent
section on disputed aspects of worship. This section, in particular, is
very valuable, in that it shows how many non-Romanist communions today have
actually rejected the Reformation and adopted Rome's presuppositions regarding
worship. 80 pages.

The Canterbury Tales
Interacts with James Jordan's Geneva Papers on worship. An excellent expose
demonstrating how Jordan's views on worship are seriously flawed and how his
writings "often show more charity toward Papists, than toward the Reformed
faith." Reed wades through the many contradictions found in Jordan's
writings, to show that corruption of the Reformed faith is most evident in
three major areas: 1. the repudiation of the Reformed regulative principle of
worship; 2. the attempt to introduce superstitions and unwarranted practices
into the church; and 3. the rejection of confessional Presbyterianism.
Elaborating, Reed notes that "the primary indication of the Tyler (this
was first written in 1984) corruption of worship is seen in their repudiation
of the Reformed regulative principle of worship. This repudiation is manifest
in four ways: by false portrayals of the regulative principle; by a failure to
make proper distictions within the regulative principle; by a faulty pairing of
Reformed and Anabaptist notions; and by a failure to deal exegetically with the
scriptural position of the reformers (and the Reformed confessions) on the
topic of worship... Moreover, Mr. Jordan does not stop with the repudiation of
the Reformed regulative principle. He goes on with a program to reintroduce
within the church many superstitions and unwarrranted practices" (pp. 4,
24). This is not surprising, for as historical teaches, when you reject
Scriptural institutions of worship, you of necessity must replace them with
some form of man-made, idolatrous, ceremony or rite; building monuments to
antichrist and the false prophets of the past! This very fact is illustrated by
Reed when he writes, "It is also quite telling that Mr. Jordan acknoledges
his affinity with Lutheran and Anglican forms of worship, in preference to
others (Geneva Papers, #25). Lutheran/Anglican worship is built on an entirely
different presupposition than Reformed worshiip. The Lutheran/Anglican position
holds that we may worship God by various means, as long as what we are doing is
not explicitly forbidden in scripture (this error of Jordan's can also be seen
in his Sociology of the Church, when after paying lip service to the regulative
principle (p. XX) he then repeatedly argues for the introduction of idoltry in
worship on the basis. This is a good introduction to historic Reformed worship,
using Jordan as an example of what misguided zeal (and a great deal of
ignorance) can produce in this area. Reed writes clearly and has a very good
grasp of the Scriptural and historical data concerning worship issues. Reed
also includes an excellent bibliography which clearly demonstrates the point at
issue, showing that Jordan has jettisoned the historic Reformed view of the
regulative principle (as have most modern Reformed churches and Christian
Reconstructionists), all his protests to the contrary notwithstanding. This

Christmass: A Biblical Critique
Co-authored by Michael Schneider, this books argues that Christmas is
essentially a pagan holiday; and that its religious elements foster an
imitation gospel which actually keeps the world from understanding the true
gospel. Committed to sola Scriptura and a desire to maintain the purity of
Scriptural worship, it contains a historical survey of the Pagan roots of this
Roman Catholic holy-day. Numerous citations concerning Protestant opposition to
"ho-ho" are cited, demonstrating that the basis of Protestant
opposition to holy-days arises out of a proper understanding of the fourth
commandment ó for God alone has the authority to mark out or decree special
religious (i.e. holy or separated) days. And this is exactly what he has done
with the Lord's day, giving us 52 holy days per year. Whenever other
"holy-days" are decreed, by human authority, worship deteriorates,
the regulative principle is ignored, and a low view of the Sabbath often
prevails. It is interesting to note that among the Puritans, colonial
magistrates in New England banned the public celebration of the Christmass in
these words, cited from one of their public notices: "The observance of
Christmas having been deemed a Sacrilege... and similar Satanical Practices are
hereby forbidden with the Offender liable to a Fine of FIVE SHILLINGS."
Gillespie waxes eloquent on this matter, including festival days among those
"ceremonies that are unlawful, because they sort us with idolaters,"
writing, "by communicating with idolaters in their rites and ceremonies,
we ourselves become guilty of idolatry; even as Ahaz, 2 Kings 16:10, was an
idolater, eo ipso, that he took the pattern of an altar from idolaters.
Forasmuch, then, as kneeling before the consecrated bread, the sign of the
cross, surplice, festival days, bishopping, bowing down to the altar,
administration of the sacraments in private places, etc., are the wares of
Rome, the baggage of Babylon, the trinkets of the whore, the badges of Popery,
the ensigns of Christ's enemies, and the very trophies of antichrist, -- we
cannot conform, communicate and symbolise with the idolatrous Papists in the
use of the same, without making ourselves idolaters by participation. Shall the
chaste spouse of Christ take upon her the ornaments of the whore? Shall the
Israel of God symbolise with her who is spiritually called Sodom and Egypt?
Shall the Lord's redeemed people wear the ensigns of their captivity? Shall the
saints be seen with the mark of the beast? Shall the Christian church be like
the antichristian, the holy like the profane, religion like superstition, the
temple of God like the synagogue of Satan?" (A Dispute Against English
Popish Ceremonies, in Gillespie's Works volume one, p. 80). The Spirit speaking
in the Scriptures ought to determine our practices, and not emotions or
traditions of men, thus we hope that you will give this book a fair hearing.

Over the years, PHP titles have
provided readers with solid literature from an historic Protestant and Presbyterian
perspective. With the passage of
time, many of the older titles have gone out of print. Moreover, the
publisher has several new volumes ready for press. At PHP, we do not have the resources to produce
printed editions of all these titles at once. Therefore, in order to make all of this material available at
one time, on a single source, we have released the PHP Library on CD.
The files on the CD are in both HTML and PDF file formats. That
means that there is no application software to install. Instead, you use the PHP CD in conjunction with your
browser program (such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator) and with
Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 3.0 or later). Recent versions of browser
software and Reader may be downloaded free via the internet from various
software companies; we do not supply them with the PHP disk. Of course, you
must also have a CD drive (2x required, faster recommended), connected to your
computer.
Note: The CDs
are available in both Mac and Windows versions. If you have a relatively new computer (and a
recent version of the Mac OS or windows), you should be able to run either version of our disk, because it follows ISO standards
and utilizes generic HTML and PDF formats. Nevertheless, for the sake of
customers with older computers, we have created platform-specific disks. We
will ship you the version of the disk matching the computer and operating
system which you describe above. If you have questions about the compatibility
of your operating system with the PHP CD, please contact us. Contents of the
disk are copyrighted, and protected by applicable U.S. and international
copyright laws.
IMPORTANT TECHNICAL NOTICE: This CD is published with the goal of making PHP
titles more widely available, but PHP (and SWRB--RB) does not have the
resources to furnish technical support concerning basic computer operations and
particular software applications. If you do not understand how to use your
computer, or wish to become more proficient with your web browser, please
consult the instruction manual(s) or on-line documentation which came with your

NEW TITLES and PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED MATERIAL
The Protestant Reformation
Come Out From Among Them:
'Anti-Nicodemite' Writings of John Calvin
An entire volume, newly
translated from the French, providing some of Calvin's most important
statements respecting worship. Calvin
writes against the 'Nicodemites:' a class of would-be Protestants who hoped to
maintain their social standing by outward conformity to Romish rituals and
worship; these dissemblers claimed that it was
lawful to attend the outward ordinances of Romish worship, so long as they did
not inwardly receive the heretical tenets of Rome.
Calvin's response is forceful. Through a
series of tracts, letters, and sermons, the reformer consistently maintains
that proper worship is an
essential part of the believer's duty to God. Calvin decries all forms of superstition and man-made
worship. He exposes the blasphemous
nature of popish worship, and stresses the duty of true Christians to separate
themselves from such polluted forms of worship.

On Superior Powers (Christopher
Goodman)
From 1555 to 1558, Christopher
Goodman served as co-pastor, with John Knox, of the congregation of English
exiles in Geneva. During the course
of his ministry, Goodman preached upon Acts 4:19 and 5:29: "Whether it be
right in the sight of God, to obey you rather than God, judge ye. We ought
rather to obey God than men." At the request of his brethren, Goodman
subsequently published an expanded version of his exposition, "How
Superior Powers Ought to be Obeyed of Their Subjects: and Wherein They May
Lawfully by God's Word be Disobeyed and Resisted. Wherein also is declared the
cause of all this present misery in England, and the only way to remedy the
same." In this book, Goodman contends
against both ecclesiastical and political tyranny.
This new edition of Superior Powers includes a scripture index, a subject index, a
biographical essay on the life of Christopher Goodman, and the original
foreword by William Whittingham.
John Knox: The Forgotten
Reformer (Kevin Reed)
The present volume seeks to restore interest
in Knox's theology, illustrating how the reformer's beliefs have great
relevance for our own day. The individual essays in this book treat the
following topics:
-The life of the
reformer
-The
biblical law of worship
-True and false
churches
-The role of the
faithful pastor
-The
use of plain speech
-A warning
against the Anabaptists
-Church

The Argument of the Book of Job
Unfolded (William Henry Green)
This volume is not a detailed
commentary; rather it furnishes an overview of the principal persons and themes
in the book of Job: Job's happy estate,
Satan, Job in affliction, Job's three
friends, Job's conflict, Job's triumph, Job's refutation of his friends, Elihu,
the Lord, and the place of the book of Job in the scheme of holy scripture.
William Henry Green (1825-1900) was a professor at Princeton Seminary. His
volume about the book of Job was originally published in 1874.
God Manifest in the Flesh:
Letters on Unitarianism; Letters on the Eternal Sonship of Christ (Samuel
Miller)
The two books reproduced in this
volume are thematically linked, and they furnish Miller's most extensive
writings on Christological controversies.
Each book was produced with a distinct
readership in mind. The first work, "Letters
on Unitarianism" (1821), was written for a general readership, in order to
expose the evils of Unitarianism, so that orthodox Christians would guard
against the inroads of Unitarian errors (prevalent today in some Charismatic
circles--RB). The second work, "Letters on the Eternal Sonship
of Christ" (1823), was composed to correct the errors of a straying
brother, Moses Stuart, a professor
at Andover Seminary; in contrast to the first book, the second work is cast
with a more academic readership in mind. Also included, as an Appendix, is
Miller's "Letter to the Editor of the Unitarian Miscellany," which
was a reply to a published attack against Miller, by an anonymous Unitarian
writer whose article was printed in the Unitarian periodical.
Holding Fast the Faithful Word:
Sermons and Addresses by Samuel Miller
Contents of the Volume:
The Gospel
The book opens with strong declarations about
the first principles of Christianity. Miller explains the substitutionary
atonement in "Christ Our Righteousness." He shows the necessity of
"Being on the Lord's Side." Perceptive
readers will note the depth of these statements, respecting the nature of the
gospel, in contrast to the shallow evangelistic messages of the present day.
In two missionary sermons, Miller illustrates how Christ, through the gospel,
will conquer the world. There are additional sermons on "The Difficulties
and Temptations which Attend the Preaching of the Gospel in Great Cities"
and "The Importance of Gospel Truth."
The Christian Ministry
Miller considers "Christ, the Model of
Gospel Ministers." He examines the call to
the Christian ministry in "The Sacred Office Magnified."
He shows the necessity and meaning of pastoral fidelity in "Holding Fast
the Faithful Word." In a related messages, he stresses, "The Duty of
the Church to Take Measures for Providing An Able and Faithful Ministry,"
and gives "A Plea for an Enlarged Ministry."
The Eldership
This volume includes Miller's original sermon
on the ruling elder; his later writings on the eldership were developed from
this discourse.
Personal and Family Piety
Miller gives warm exhortations
regarding personal and family piety.
He describes "The Duty, the Benefits, and the Proper Method of Religious
Fasting." He treats "The Importance of Domestic Happiness," and
"The Means of Domestic Happiness." An illuminating discussion on the
role of women is found in "The Appropriate Duty of the Female Sex.
Exhortations to Christians
Christian parents are given a stern warning
on the danger of educating their children in Roman Catholic schools. Later discourses
cover the subjects of suicide and theatrical amusements.
Presbyterian Ordination (Robert
J. Breckinridge)
A companion speech to Breckinridge's
Presbyterian Government, this
discourse sustains the argument that ordination is a joint governmental act of
the presbytery, not a ministerial rite restricted to preachers. Breckinridge
defends the propriety of ruling elders participating in the laying on of hands
in ministerial ordinations.

SEPARATION FROM FALSE WORSHIP (i.e. worship not based on the second commandment or what is now
called the regulative principle of worship) AND WORSHIPPING PRIVATELY (IN YOUR HOME)
(From: John

CALVIN
WRITES: "Some one will therefore ask me what
counsel I would like to give to a believer who thus dwells in some Egypt or
Babylon where he may not worship God purely, but is forced by the
common practice to accommodate himself to bad things. The first advice would be
to leave [i.e. relocate -- GB] if he could. . . . If someone has no way to
depart, I would counsel him to consider whether it would be possible for him to abstain from all idolatry in order
to preserve himself pure and spotless toward God in both body and soul. Then let him worship God in private, praying
him to restore his poor church to its right estate."

attack upon Kevin Reed in his book entitled The Visible Church in the Outer
Darkness."
Romans 16:17 is also very clear on this point:
"Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause
divisions and offences contrary to the (Apostolic--RB) doctrine which ye have
learned; and avoid them."

REED, KEVIN
Making Shipwreck of the Faith: Evangelicals and Roman
Catholics Together
"In
1994, a group of notable evangelicals and Roman Catholics issued a statement of
cooperation entitled, "Evangelicals and Catholics Together: The Christian
Mission in the Third Millennium." The document has provoked numerous
articles and books assailing the evangelical signatories to the accord. The
present author has surveyed many of the responses to ect, but he has come away
with mixed feelings. So far, most of the critics of ect
take aim at areas where Rome is an easy target; but they avoid critical aspects
of doctrine and practice where modern evangelicals exhibit remarkable
similarities to Rome. There can be no question that the ect document
represents a colossal compromise with Rome on the part of any professing
Protestant who supports it. Moreover, the accord and its aftermath reveal much
about the present state of evangelicalism. In particular, the situation
demonstrates that most evangelicals have departed from the doctrines and
practices of the Protestant Reformation.
We take this opportunity to focus upon the preeminent
issues of the Reformation. The present essay seeks to redirect the focus of
readers to the bigger picture, providing a framework for assessing Roman
Catholicism, contemporary evangelicalism, and the ect document. This
book illustrates how both Romanists and evangelicals have rejected scriptural
teaching about (1.) the essence of the gospel, (2.) divinely-instituted
worship, and (3.) the marks of a true church. By corrupting the gospel, worship, and the church, evangelicals and
Roman Catholics together are making shipwreck of the Christian faith"
(Kevin Reed).

Presbyterian Government in Extraordinary Times (1991)
This historical survey attempts to apply the lessons of history to contemporary
problems by distinguishing between "the polity which exists in a
fully-organized church, and those principles which apply to churches in
irregular circumstances." A controversial contemporary Presbyterian work,
it defends separation from corrupt churches, based on the principle of private
judgement, fought and died for at the Reformation. Contains numerous quotations
demonstrating the historical validity of its reasoning. It notes that,
"[a] faithful shepherd will lead the sheep to safe pasture, giving his
life, if necessary, to insure the safety of the sheep (John 10:9,10). When pastor
and elders become convinced of the desperate state of the churches in our own
day, they should take the lead; their sacred callings demand that they promptly
direct their congregations away from corrupt denominational ties, to form
biblical connections of church government. In some cases this will mean that
entire congregations should secede from their apostate denominations and join
with other churches of like faith and practice. To leave the sheep in danger,
under the jurisdiction of a corrupt presbytery, is gross negligence on the part
of those who watch over souls "as they must give an account'" (Heb.
13:17). These arguments also apply to individuals who find themselves in
obstinately backslidden, deforming, heretical and/or idolatrous congregations.
Also contains a useful section explaining "why modern 'Reformed' and
'evangelical' authors have so much trouble with Charismatics," noting that
"[t]he fundamental flaws of the Charismatic movement are completely
overlooked if the discussion turns merely on the subject of 'spiritual gifts.'
The real issues at stake are the nature of the gospel and true worship; and
these issues are largely ignored, because modern 'Reformed' and 'evangelical'
churches really do not believe that the Pelagianism of the Charismatics is
'another gospel,' or that human devices in worship are idolatry" (pp.
40-41). This item is also FREE

Memoirs of the Westminster Divines
Covers the lives and writings of a number of the eminent participants of the illustrious
Westminster Assembly. James Reid was an Reformed Presbyterian
minister who separated from the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Scotland in
1822 due to their relinquishing of the Auchensaugh Renovation of the National
and Solemn League and Covenant as a term of communion. On his death bed he
remarked that "he could never have laid his head on a dying pillow"
had he remained in the RPC of Scotland after they had jettisoned the
Auchensaugh bond. Reid's purpose in
writing the Memoirs (originally published in 1811) was to vindicate the
character of the witnesses of the second Reformation, whose testimony he upheld
in separating from the backsliding majority. Mr. Reid understood the necessity
of defending the character of these witnesses against the assaults of
adversaries; because the credibility of a witness's testimony is only as good
as his character. Over 400 pages.

REFORMED PRESBYTERY
Act, Declaration, And Testimony, For The Whole Of The
Covenanted Reformation,
As Attained To, And Established In, Britain and Ireland; Particularly Betwixt
The Years 1638 and 1649, Inclusive. As, Also, Against All The Steps Of
Defection From Said Reformation, Whether In Former Or Later Times, Since The Overthrow
Of That Glorious Work, Down To This Present Day (1876)
Upholds the original work of the
Westminster Assembly and testifies to the abiding worth and truth formulated in
the Westminster family of documents. Upholds
and defends the crown rights of King Jesus in church and state, denouncing
those who would remove the crown from Christ's head by denying His right to
rule (by His law) in both the civil and ecclesiastical spheres. Testifies to
the received doctrine, government, worship, and discipline of the Church of
Scotland in her purest (reforming) periods. Applies God's Word to the Church's
corporate attainments. It,
is an instrument,
which merits attention, from the time, in which it was written; the character,
circumstances and faithfulness of the compilers; its parts, lucid declaration,
and pointed argument. --To evidence regard to the injunction, Song 1:8; to
exemplify the resolution of the Psalmist, Ps. 77:12; and tell to the generation
following, Ps. 48:13; 145:4, a historical view of the church, in Scotland, from
A.D. 300 till 1688, is given: with a judicial approbation of the earnest
contendings and attainments of the faithful, and a strong and pointed judicial
condemnation of error and the promoters thereof. This retrospective view
furnishes matter for the young and for the aged disciple, to contemplate their
glorious Lord, in providential procedure, towards his own people; --to
distinguish between the providential and preceptive will of God; to estimate
his people as weighed in the balances of the sanctuary; --and their own
profession, covenant and organic identity with the faithful, who have gone
before. Argument of principle, arising from historical facts, follows; and the
document closes with doctrinal declaration in testamentary and polemic form. (The
Original Covenanter and Contending Witness magazine, Dec. 17, 1993 [whole year in one volume $15.98 P, $29.00
HP], pp. 557-558).
Shows the church's great historical
victories (such as the National and
Solemn League and Covenant, leading to the Westminster Assembly) and exposes her enemies actions (e.g. the
Prelacy of Laud; the Independency, sectarianism, covenant breaking and ungodly
toleration set forth by the likes of Cromwell [and the Independents that
conspired with him]; the Erastianism and civil sectarianism of William of

Auchensaugh Renovation of the National Covenant and Solemn
League and Covenant; with the Acknowledgement of Sins and Engagement to Duties
as they were Renewed at Auchensaugh in 1712... Also the Renovation of These
Public Federal Deeds Ordained at Philadelphia, Oct. 8, 1880, By the Reformed
Presbytery, With Accommodation of the Original Covenants, in Both Transactions,
to their Times and Positions Respectively (1880 ed.)
"In
1712, at Auchensaugh, the Covenants, National and Solemn League, were
renewed... At the renewal the covenant bonds were recognized as binding the
descendants of those who first entered into those bonds. The Covenanters,
however, sought to display the true intent of those Covenants with marginal
notes. These notes explained that the Church of
Jesus Christ, in Scotland (and around the world), must not join hands with any
political power in rebellion to the crown rights of King Jesus. The
Covenanters pledged the Covenanted Reformed Presbyterian Church to the support
of lawful magistracy (i.e. magistracy which conformed itself to the precepts of
God's Word) and declared themselves and their posterity against support of any
power, in Church or State, which lacked biblical authority." (From
"About the Covenanted Reformed Presbyterian Church" newsletter). An
excellent introduction (historical and moral) regarding the reasons, motives
and manner of fulfilling the duty of covenanting with God. Especially helpful
concerning the Biblical view of the blessings (for covenant-keepers) and
cursings (for covenant breakers) related to covenanting. As noted on page 37,
"the godly usually in times of great defection
from the purity and power of religion, and corruption of the ordinances of God's
worship, set about renewing their covenant, thereby to prevent covenant curses,
and procure covenant blessing; as we find both in scripture record, 2 Chron.
15:12-13; 29:10; 34:30-31; Ezra 10:3, and in our own ecclesiastical history."
Times like ours certainly call for a revival of the Scriptural ordinance of
covenanting, for "[t]he nations throughout Christendom, continue in league
with Antichrist and give their strength to the beast. They still refuse to
profess and defend the true religion in doctrine, worship, government and
discipline, contrary to the example of the kingdoms of Scotland, England and
Ireland in the seventeenth century" (p. 136 in this book). This is one of the most important Covenanter
documents and a part of the true Covenanted church's judicial standards.140 pages.

REFORMED PRESBYTERY
An Explanation and Defence of the Terms of Communion,
Adopted by the Community of Dissenters, etc.
Defends the inescapable necessity of creeds and confessions,
while promoting a fully creedal church membership. Shows how the law of God obliges all Christians
"to think the same things, and to speak the same things; holding fast the
form of sound words, and keeping the ordinances as they have been delivered to
us" (Col. 3:13).
After
laying some basic groundwork, this book proceeds to defend the six points of
the "Terms of Ministerial and Christian Communion Agreed Upon by the
Reformed Presbytery." These six points are the
most conservative and comprehensive short statements of consistent
Presbyterianism you will likely ever see. Besides the obvious acknowledgement
of the alone infallible Scriptures, the Westminster Standards, and the divine
right of Presbyterianism, these points also maintain the perpetual obligation
of our Covenants, National and Solemn League, the Renovation of these covenants
at Auchensaugh in 1712, and the Judicial Act, Declaration and Testimony emitted by the Reformed Presbytery.
In short, this book sets forth adherence to the whole of
the covenanted reformation, in both church and state, as it has been attained
by our covenanting forefathers.

Reformed Presbytery in North America (RPNA)
The Meeting Reconstituting the Reformed Presbytery
(Covenanters) in North America (RPNA) (Aug.
5, 2000)
As of August 5, 2000 (and FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 113 YEARS) a Reformed Presbyterian
(Covenanter) PRESBYTERY exists which embraces the faithful biblical attainments of the
best Churches of both the first and second Reformations (Phil. 3:16). In accordance with Scriptural doctrine of the
Church, the "Deed of Constitution for the Reformed Presbytery in North
America" (RPNA) states,
We do sincerely
profess that it is the glory of God, the edification of Christ's Church, as
well as the preservation and promotion of the true Christian religion
throughout the whole world that does persuade us to unite in constituting this
Presbytery.
We do voluntarily
promise to be subject in the Lord unto the Reformed Presbytery In North
America; to promote and to preserve the doctrine, worship, government, and
discipline as summarized in the above cited "Six Terms Of Ecclesiastical
Communion" (http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualnls/6points.htm -- RB); and to receive with meekness all brotherly
counsel and admonition tendered by fellow members of this Presbytery.
We do not consider
the Reformed Presbytery In North America to be an entirely new entity, but
rather a continuation of the one moral person with other covenanted
judicatories of the past, and with those faithful witnesses of the Covenanted
Reformation known as Protesters and Society People (1650-1742 inclusive).
Accordingly, when we refer above to our "Constitution", we include
within it all the judicial documents comprehended and engaged unto in our
"Six Terms Of Ecclesiastical Communion ( http://www.swrb.com/newslett/FREEBOOK/RefConf.htm -- RB)" -- specifically, only those documents
which are agreeable to the Word of God, and consistent with our covenanted
attainments, as they were formally received and approved by the following
covenanted judicatories between the following inclusive dates:
1. The Church Of
Scotland (1560-1602, 1638-1649).
2. The Reformed
Presbytery In Scotland (1743-1808), and the Synod Of The Reformed Presbyterian
Church In Scotland (1809-1821).
3. The Reformed
Presbytery In Ireland (1763-1779, 1782-1810), and the Synod Of The Reformed
Presbyterian Church In Ireland (1811-1839).
4. The Reformed
Presbytery In America (1774 -1778, 1798 -1805, 1840 -1845, 1854 -1887).
In constituting the
Reformed Presbytery In North America in moral succession to these aforementioned
faithful judicatories, it is evident that we have not included any of the
present bodies designated as "Reformed Presbyterian" whether in
Scotland, Ireland, Canada, or the United States.
In full agreement
with the official position of the Reformed Presbytery In America, as recorded
in their Minutes of June 2, 1841 (which are attached as an Addendum to this
Deed of Constitution), we hold these ecclesiastical bodies to be unfaithful to
the attainments of the Covenanted Reformation. With full persuasion of
conscience, we stand separate from them and cannot unite with them until they
publicly repent of their shameful backsliding.
Thus, we affirm
that we, having returned to faithful terms of communion, and a true
constitution, are not a schismatic body that has further divided the Church of
Christ. To the contrary, the Reformed Presbytery In North America is a moral
perpetuation of that faithful and unified manifestation of Christ's Covenanted
Church in Scotland, Ireland, and the United States. It is our goal to unite the
Church of Christ in every land by means of promoting a truly covenanted
reformation in accordance with the prayer of our Lord, "That they may be
one, even as we are one" (John 17:22).

Outline of Recent Proceedings in the Reformed Presbytery, Including
Meetings Held in Butler County, PA; Northwood and Belle Centre, Logan County,
Ohio
This
book is primarily made up of the "Minutes of the General Meetings of the
Reformed Presbyterian Church." These minutes cover the period from June 4,
1884 to June 6, 1929 (though some years are missing -- the missing years are
1897, 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1923, 1925, 1626, 1928 -- if anyone has access to
any of these missing minutes we would appreciate a copy). David Steele was the moderator of the earlier meetings (which were not "General Meetings," but
were meetings of the Reformed Presbytery). Here
we have a record of the rulings and contendings of these faithful Covenanters
on a wide variety of subjects -- ranging from testimonies against civil,
ecclesiastical and individual defections from the covenanted paths [e.g. as in
what is now the RPCNA] to comments on World War One, family worship, and much
more. 612 pages.

A Serious Examination, and Impartial Survey (1754)
The title continues: "Of a Print, designed, The True State,
etc. by a pretended Presbytery at Edinburgh: Wherein the new Scheme of Doctrine
anent the Extent of Christ's Death, Advanced in that Print, is tried at the
Scripture-bar, and found disagreeable thereunto, and to the authorized
Standards of the Church of Scotland in her purest Times..." Another fine work
by the Reformed Presbytery. Deals with numerous subjects, including the
atonement, the covenants (of works, grace and redemption), the nature of
assurance and much more. Defends MacMillan (senior) against the
"self-evident and atrocious calumnies abundantly poured out upon old Mr.
M'Millan" (Hutchison, The Reformed Presbyterian Church in Scotland, p. 199). Hutchison also notes, "(n)othing is
said of the writer of this "Serious Examination;" but on various
grounds we are disposed to look upon it as the work of the younger M'Millan. At
the time it was prepared there was no other clerical member of Presbytery in a
position to do this; (and a pamphlet on the other side ascribes it to a
clerical author,) -- Mr. Marshall was in ill health, and the elder M'Millan was
dead before its publication. Besides this, the intimate acquaintance which the
writer displays with the opinions, feelings, and letters of the latter, and
with all the details of the discussions and debates, together with the
suppression of his own name on several occasions when he is undoubtedly
referred to, strongly support the belief that the younger M'Millan was the
writer; and certainly it is no discredit to him, either as to the tone that
pervades it, or his knowledge of the subject, or ability to deal with it"

A Short Directory for Religious Societies (1881)
This work is still an extremely useful system of rules and instructions for
religious fellowship -- especially where duly constituted churches are
non-existent and/or where a regular faithful pastoral ministry is lacking. It
was originally written to protect the "scattered flock" -- whose
pastors were persecuted and martyred through prelatic and popish tyranny --
from spies and informers (who would have put them in danger of their lives);
and to encourage faithful Christians to maintain regular religious meetings for
their mutual edification and the propagation of the Gospel. Initially drawn up
by the appointment of the Reformed Presbytery (in Scotland), this edition was
published by the Reformed Presbytery in America (Rochester, NY). This
Presbytery stated that "[a]part from anything local or temporary, the
intelligent and faithful witness will easily discern in this treatise some of
the footsteps of the flock of slaughter -- some of the waymarks set up by those
heroic patriots who 'loved not their lives unto the death,' while in adhering
to their solemn vows, they nobly contended against the dragon and his angels
for the covenant rights of God and man... That the Lord God of Abraham, of
Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our covenant fathers, may give their successors
the same spirit of faith to contend earnestly and strive lawfully for these
precious rights, is the earnest prayer of" this Presbytery's committee. A
much needed book in our day of "the continued national overthrow and
burial of Christ's covenanted cause and testimony, increasing apostasy,
idolatry, blasphemous heresies, errors and delusions, ungodliness, atheism, and
all manner of wickedness;" as pockets of the faithful covenanted remnant
are once again beginning to appear all across the map. 100 pages.

REFORMED PRESBYTERY
A Short Vindication of our Covenanted Reformation (1879)
Until the church comes to terms
with what is written in this book it will remain weak and divided. Covenant breakers will not prosper, as this rare item
demonstrates from both Scripture and history. The
power packed ordinance of covenanting (exemplified in the National and Solemn
League and Covenant in particular), was foundational to the second Reformation
and the work of the Westminster Assembly.
By
the National Covenant our fathers laid Popery prostrate. By the Solemn League
and Covenant they were successful in resisting prelatic encroachments and civil
tyranny. By it they were enabled to achieve the Second Reformation... They were
setting up landmarks by which the location and limits of the city of God will
be known at the dawn of the millennial day... How can they be said to go forth
by the footsteps of the flock, who have declined from the attainments,
renounced the covenants and contradicted the testimony of the cloud of
witnesses.... All the schisms (separations) that disfigure the body mystical of
Christ... are the legitimate consequences of the abandonment of reformation
attainments, the violation of covenant engagements.
If you are interested in knowing how to
recognize a faithful church (or state), when and why to separate from
unfaithful institutions, who has held up the standard of covenanted Reformation
attainments and who has backslidden (and why), what
it means to subscribe to the Westminster Confession (and why most that say they
do so today do not have any idea of what that means), and much more
concerning individual, family, church and civil duties, this is one of the best
books you will ever lay your hands on.
It chronicles "some instances of worldly
conformity and mark(s) some steps of defection from our 'covenanted unity and
uniformity,'" noting how "it is necessary to take a retrospect of our
history for many years; for we did not all at once reach our present condition
of sinful ignorance and manifold apostasy."
Presbyterian and the Reformed
churches lay under the heavy hand of God's judgement in our day, because of the
very defections noted throughout this fine work. "We heard (hear) from various quarters the cry, 'maintain the
truth, stand up for the principles of the Second Reformation;' and yet many of
those who are the most loud in uttering this cry, appear desirous to bury in
oblivion those imperishable national and ecclesiastical deeds, by which the
church and kingdom of Scotland became 'married to the Lord.'" Are we
married to the Lord, or have we thrown off the covenants of our forefathers;
are we the chaste bride of Christ, or a harlot who is found in the bedchambers
of every devilish suitor (whether ecclesiastical or civil) who tempts us with
the favors of this world?
Let us cry out, as with
"the noble Marquis of Argyle, upon the scaffold," when he said,
"God hath tied us by covenants to religion and reformation. These that
were then unborn are yet engaged, and it passeth the power of all the
magistrates under heaven to absolve them from the oath of God. They deceive
themselves, and it may be, would deceive others, who think otherwise."
Not for the weak of heart. 50 pages.

The title continues: "And more particularly, of that toleration granted by

England and Ireland. Addresses to all professors of the Protestant Reformed
religion." Very pertinent to our day, when so-called

Reformed Presbyterian Testimony (1842)
Keddie describes this as "a doctrinal and historical statement, explaining
and expanding upon the RPC's commitment to the Westminster Standards, the
National Covenant, and the Solemn League and Covenant" (The Dictionary
of Scottish Church History and Theology, p. 699). It contains the
historical part of the testimony of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in
Scotland including a brief sketch of the contendings of the witnesses from the
earliest period to the present time. The doctrinal section of the Church's
testimony follows, covering everything from "Divine Revelation" to
"Covenanting." Over 400 pages.

REFORMED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN AMERICA (RPCNA)
Reformation Principles Exhibited (1806-07)
Although this document was unfaithfully
adopted by the RPCNA (when they decried faithful historical testimony as an
article of faith in the preface), this book still contains much useful
doctrinal and historical information. Part one is "A Brief Historical View
of the Church, As a Visible Society in Covenant with God. In Two Books. The
First Exhibiting the Church Universal; and the Second the Reformed Presbyterian
Church." Part two contains the "Declaration and Testimony of the
Reformed Presbyterian Church in America (RPCNA)." Furthermore,
notwithstanding the unfaithfulness of the adopting body, Reformation Principles Exhibited testifies to real attainments. Examples include testifying against the immoral U.S.
constitution, against jury duty, against the use of the elective franchise
(voting) and against swearing an oath of allegiance under this immoral
constitution. Close communion is upheld and occasional hearing is denounced as
a sinful, schismatic practice. Interestingly, this earlier edition can
be compared with later editions to exhibit the continuing defection of the
RPCNA -- even from what was good (and part of her own terms of communion) in
her own earlier standards. For example, in part two, chapter 21, point 5,
"Of Church Fellowship," we read,
We therefore condemn the following errors, and testify
against all who maintain them: ... 5. That it is lawful for the Church to be
without any terms of communion. 6. That any person may be admitted to
communion, who opposes any of the terms of Church fellowship. 7. That
occasional communion may be extended to persons who should not be received to
constant fellowship (p. 75).
Also,
We therefore condemn the following errors, and testify
against all who maintain them: ... 1. That the Bible is the only proper testimony of the church (which takes into account that the
Bible is the only divine
testimony, but also recognizes human
testimony, agreeable to Scripture,
as binding [or else why preach, for example, if no one is bound to obey any human testimony, even if the human testimony is agreeable to the divine testimony found in the Bible? Cf. Various places in Samuel
Rutherford's Due Right of Presbyteries and A Free Disputation Against Pretended Liberty of Conscience for further explanation]--RB). 2. That a Christian is
under no obligation to follow Christ's witnesses in their faithful contendings.
3. That it is lawful, in order to enlarge the church, to open a wider door of
communion, by declining from a more pointed testimony, to one which is more
loose and general. (p. 120, part 2, emphases added).
How sad that these faithful
testimonies are no longer upheld (as points of discipline) in the modern RPCNA. 260 pages.

REID, H.M.B.
A Cameronian Apostle: Being Some Account of John Macmillan
of Balmaghie (1896)
The author wrote this book "considering
the renewed interest taken at present in questions of Church government and
establishment," noting that "there seemed to be some room for a
detailed treatment of a career which covers so interesting a period as that
embraced between 1690 and 1750." Macmillan is
an important historical link to those who still fight for Christ's Crown and
Covenant. "For many years he fought
the battle of the Covenants alone, and he fought it on lines of policy and
wisdom." states Reid. Furthermore, the author continues,
I
have tried to indicate his position among the 'Suffering Remnant' by calling
him 'a Cameronian Apostle;' for, during the long period of 36 years, he was the
sole ordained minister among the scattered congregations of the 'Society'
people. The name seems not unfitting,
and it receives a certain sanction from the authority of Dr. Cunningham, who
styled him the 'high-priest' of the Societies... Further, Macmillan's story is
also the record of the development of a most interesting side of Scottish
Church life. He may be said, indeed, to have made
the history of what, at last, became the Reformed Presbyterian Church.
This is so true, that that Church long bore the popular name of the
'Macmillanites.' And the name of Macmillan is bound up with more than one
congregation still existing."
An important book for those who
would trace the backsliding of modern Presbyterianism (the neopresbyterians)
and also be encouraged by the remnant of those who remain faithful to the
position of the original Covenanters (the paleopresbyterians). This book's 308 pages includes illustrations and a detailed
appendix containing important church documents.

RENWICK, JAMES
Christ Sifting His Church
Classic
Covenanter preaching (by the last Covenanter martyr) explaining (in great
detail) why God sometimes, even often (during the
1260 years of the great apostasy in which we now live), brings extreme
suffering and persecution upon His church. This is a great example
of the deep-thinking and practical preaching that the killing times in Scotland
produced. Such preaching, which took place at conventicles (field meetings)
under the constant threat of Royalist attack (and the possibility of instant
martyrdom) makes most preaching today look like a sickly and pathetic imitation
of what must have been taking place under the apostles (and among some of the
early Christians) when they were constantly facing threats of persecution and
martyrdom from Rome. This is a meaty meal, great for
those who desire an understanding of God's mysterious providential dealings
with men, containing much encouragement for those undergoing trials.
One customer, after hearing this sermon, comented, "it is one of the best
sermons I have ever heard." This sermon is read by Elder Lyndon Dohms from

the Reverend Mr. James Renwick
(1776 ed.)
Another
very rare item of over 600 pages. Carefully
collected and faithfully transcribed from several manuscripts, these pages
exhibit some of the reasons why Renwick sealed his testimony with his blood.
Houston notes that these sermons were preached "in the Coventicles, in the
fields, amidst all dangers and incidents of weather, and by night as well as by
day." They set forth the amazing grasp of truth
that this young martyr for Christ was granted. "Renwick's
sermons," writes Hay Fleming, "show that
he was a faithful preacher of the Gospel; and those who had realized in their own
experience that it was the power of God unto salvation were anxious at all
hazards to listen to the Word when proclaimed by such a devoted and fearless
messenger" (Story of the Scottish Covenant in Outline [$US3.99 P; $14.00 HP]). Furthermore, Houston says of
these sermons, "They were not prepared with any view to future
publication; and the trying circumstances in which their devoted author was
placed, wholly prevented any correction or revisal. Yet
they contain not only remarkably clear expositions of the word, and a full
exhibition of the scheme of salvation, but also many passages which, for
searching application to the conscience, and moving eloquence, are unsurpassed
in the discourses of eminent preachers either in ancient or modern times"
(Life of Renwick, p. 17 [$US4.49

RENWICK, JAMES, ALEXANDER SHIELDS AND OTHER "SOCIETY
PEOPLE"
An Informatory Vindication (1687)
Informatory
Vindication (1687), a statement of principles issued by the Society People (see
Societies, United) during James VII's reign. Prepared mainly by James Renwick,
latterly in consultation with Alexander Shields, it was published in Utrecht.
Its full title reflects something of the contents: 'An
Informatory Vindication of a Poor Wasted Misrepresented Remnant of the
Suffering Anti-Popish Anti-Prelatic Anti-Erastian Anti-Sectarian True
Presbyterian Church of Christ in Scotland united together in a General
Correspondence. By Way of Reply to Various Accusations in Letters Informations
and Conferences given forth against them.' It
refuted charges brought against the 'Remnant' of schism (in their eyes a great
evil)... The Vindication mourned the estrangement from other Presbyterians who had
accepted the government's Indulgences or Edicts of Toleration, and expressed
love for them as fellow-ministers 'with whom again we would desire to have
communion in ordinances'. The separation had been forced upon the Society
People by the tyranny and temper of the times, but it did not affect their
position as being in the succession of the historic Kirk of Scotland.
The document aimed to clear away the hostility and misunderstanding about them
that had grown up in Scotland and Holland. (Cameron, ed., Dictionary of
Scottish Church History and Theology
[1993], p. 429).
In
proof of the catholic, unsectarian, Christian spirit of Renwick and his
followers, the clear statements of the INFORMATORY VINDICATION, the work which
most fully and clearly defines their position, may be referred to... In these noble
utterances, we have strikingly exemplified the true spirit of Christian
brotherhood... This is the genuine import
of the vow of the Solemn League and Covenant, which binds Covenanters to regard
whatever is done to the least of them, as done to all and to every one in
particular. While firmly holding fast all Scriptural attainments, and
contending "earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints," we
should cordially rejoice in the evidences of grace in Christ's servants
wherever we find them. We should love them as brethren, fulfil the law of
Christ by bearing their burdens, wish them God speed in all that they are doing
for the advancement of His glory, and fervently labour and pray for the coming
of the happy period when divisions and animosities shall cease, and when there
shall be one King, and His name one in all the earth. The testimony of Renwick and his associates is of
permanent value and of special importance in our day, as it was directed against
systems of error and idolatry, which serve to corrupt the Church and enslave
the State. Against Popery in every form Renwick was a heroic and
uncompromising witness. At the peril of life, he publicly testified against the
usurpation of the papist James, and rejected him as having no claim to be
regarded as a constitutional sovereign, and as utterly disqualified to reign in
a Protestant reformed land. This was the main ground of his objection against
James' toleration, for which the Indulged ministers tendered obsequious thanks
to the usurper. Yet this edict of toleration was issued for the purpose of
opening the way for the practice of Rome's abominations, and for the
advancement of papists to places of power and trust in the nation. None of the Cameronians would, for any earthly
consideration, even to save their lives, for a moment admit that a papist had
any right to exercise political power in a reformed land. Our
martyred forefathers we regard as worthy of high respect and imitation, for
their deeply cherished dread of the growing influence of Popery, and for their
determined resistance to its exclusive and extravagant claims. The system of
Popery is the abnegation of all precious gospel truth; and is a complete
politico-religious confederacy against the best interests of a Protestant
nation. The boast of its abettors is that it is semper eadem -- ever the same. Rome cannot reform herself from
within, and she is incapable of reformation from external influences and
agencies. The Bible never speaks of Antichrist as
to be reformed, but as waxing worse and worse till the time when he shall be
completely subverted and irrecoverably destroyed. Whatever changes may be going on in some Popish
countries, whereby the power of the Papacy is weakened, it is evident that the
principles and spirit of the Romish priesthood, and of those who are under
their influence, remain unchanged. The errors of the Antichristian system,
instead of being diminished, have of late years increased. Creature worship has
become more marked and general. The Immaculate Conception has been proclaimed
by Papal authority as the creed of Romanism. In these countries, and some other
Protestant lands, the influence of Popery in government and education, and so
on the whole social system, has been greatly on the increase. Among those who
have most deeply studied inspired prophecy, there is a general expectation that
the period of Babylon's downfall is hastening on, and is not far distant. There
is a general presentiment too, that the Man of Sin, prior to his downfall, will
make some dire and violent attempt through his infatuated followers against the
truth, and against such as faithfully maintain it. The 'Slaying of the
Witnesses," -- which we are disposed to regard as yet future -- may take
place, not so much by the actual shedding of blood, though it is plain that
Jesuit policy and violence will not hesitate to re-enact former persecution and
massacre, to accomplish a desired purpose. It may mainly be effected, as Scott,
the expositor, suggests, by silencing the voice of a public testimony in behalf
of fundamental truths throughout Christendom; and of this there are at present
unmistakable signs not a few, throughout the churches in various countries. The
Protestant church in all its sections should be thoroughly awake to its danger
from the destructive errors, idolatry and power of its ancient irreconcilable
enemy; and should, by all legitimate means, labour to counteract and nullify
its political influence. The ministry and the
rising youth of the church should study carefully the Popish controversy, and
should be intimately acquainted with the history of the rise and progress of
the Papacy -- its assumed blasphemous power -- its accumulated errors and
delusions, and its plots, varied persecutions and cruel butcheries of Christ's
faithful witnesses. Above all, they should set themselves earnestly,
prayerfully and perseveringly to diffuse the Bible and Gospel light in the dark
parts of their native country, and among Romanists in other lands. By embracing
fully and holding fast, in their practical application, the principles of the
British Covenants, and by imbibing the spirit of covenanted martyrs -- men like
Renwick and the Cameronians, we will be prepared for the last conflict with
Antichrist. The firm and faithful maintenance of a martyr-testimony will be a
principle instrument of the victory of truth over the error and idolatry of
Rome. 'They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and the word of their
testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death,' (Rev. 12:11.)
Finally -- the testimony of Renwick is valuable, as throwing light on great
evils connected with systems of civil government, and with Protestant churches,
and as pointing out clearly the duty of faithful witnesses in relation to them.
Two great principles -- the one doctrinal, and the
other practical, were essential to it, or rather constituted its whole
specialty. These were -- first -- that, according to the national vows, and the
reformation attainments, the whole civil polity of the nation should be
conformed to the Scriptures, -- and secondly, the positive duty of distinct
separation from whatever systems in the state and church that are opposed to
entire allegiance to Messiah the Prince (Houston, The Life of
James Renwick, pp. 52-55).
Some of them,
particularly in Scotland, loved not their lives unto death for the word of God,
and for the testimony which they held. Rev. vi. 9. These
refused to have communion in public ordinances not only with prelatical
ministers, but even with the acceptors of indulgences or licenses from the
civil power, to exercise their ministry under certain limitations.
The Informatory Vindication, which
certainly contains the genuine principles of church communion, held by the
sufferers for the cause of Christ in that period, declares, that they could by
no means own or countenance the administrations of the indulged ministers;
because they considered the indulgence, in any of the forms in which it was
granted by the civil power, as derived from the supremacy claimed by that power
in ecclesiastical matters; as laying the office of the ministry under
unwarrantable restriction; and as tending, in a great measure, to suppress and
bury the covenanted reformation, cf. Informatory Vindication, Head iv. (Anderson, Alexander and Rufus; or a
Series of Dialogues on Church Communion
[1862], p. 294).
To the friends of
evangelical truth, and the faithful witnesses for the redeemer's royal
prerogatives, the services of Renwick, at the crisis in which he exercised his
public ministry, were invaluable. He was eminently the man for the time.
Through the influence of the unhappy Indulgence, the strict Covenanters were
reduced to what they style themselves in the Informatory Vindication, a 'wasted, suffering, anti-popish, anti-prelatic,
anti-erastian, anti-sectarian remnant.' By the death of Cargill and Cameron,
they were left as 'sheep without a shepherd,' -- broken and scattered. Through
the fierceness of persecution, and the machinations of enemies, they were in
danger of falling into confusion, and of being entirely wasted and destroyed.
We admire the gracious providence of God in preparing, at this particular
crisis, an instrument of such rare and suitable endowments for feeding 'the
flock in the wilderness,' and for unfurling and upholding so nobly the 'Banner
of truth' amidst hosts of infuriated enemies. James Renwick, though a very
youth when he entered on his arduous work, and trained under great outward
disadvantages, had a powerful and well-cultivated mind. He was endowed with
singular administrative talent, and had great tact and skill in managing men.
He was an acute and logical thinker, an eloquent and attractive public speaker,
and was distinguished by fertility and force as a writer. The Informatory
Vindication -- his testimony against
king James' toleration, with his 'Letters,' and 'Sermons and Lectures,' bear
ample evidence of his sound judgment, comprehensive mind, and ability as an
author. His prudence, meekness and loving disposition, combined with his sanctified
zeal, and heroic courage, deservedly gave him great influence among those to
whom he ministered. He was eminently fitted to be 'a first man among men.' The
Lord held him in the hollow of his hand, and made him a 'polished shaft in his
quiver.' The services which Renwick rendered to the Protestant cause were
invaluable. He organized the scattered remnant, and imparted new life and
ardour to their proceedings. He set forth clearly the principles of the
'Society people;' and in a number of able and logical papers, clearly defined
their plans of action. He rendered it, in a great measure, impossible for
enemies to misrepresent and accuse them falsely to the Government. He was their
Secretary in their correspondence with foreign churches; and he did much to
evoke the prayerful sympathy of Protestants in other lands in behalf of the
victims of persecution in Scotland. The presence
and influence of Renwick among the suffering Presbyterians were of the highest
importance in his own day; and not to them alone, but also to the whole church
of Christ in these lands, and to the constitutional liberties of the nation. So
far as we can see, but for the singular power and devoted spirit of Renwick,
and the firm and unyielding position which the Cameronians through him were led
to assume, the cause of truth would have been completely borne down, and
Erastianism, and Popery, and Despotism had triumphed. Renwick and his followers
were the vanguard 'in the struggle for Britain's liberties, and for the
Church's spiritual independence.' Though, like other patriots born
before their time, they were doomed to fall, yet posterity owes to them a large
part of the goodly heritage which they enjoy. (Houston, The Life of James
Renwick [1865], pp. 36-37).
Emphases added throughout the preceding
quotations. This is a very rare and valuable specimen of Paleopresbyterian
(Covenanter) thought -- don't miss it! 142 pages, plus new material added by

The Testimony of Some Persecuted
Presbyterian Ministers of the Gospel Unto the Covenanted Reformation of the
Church of Scotland, and to the Present Expediency of Continuing to Preach the
Gospel in the Fields, and Against the Present Antichristian Toleration in its
Nature and Design, Tending to Bury all these in Oblivion, Lately Obtruded Upon,
and Accepted by the Body of this Nation.
Facing fierce prosecution -- and with a government contract out for his
apprehension, dead or alive -- Renwick knew that he would shortly seal his
testimony (for Christ, liberty, and the covenanted work of Reformation in
Scotland) with his own blood. In this book we have
Renwick's parting counsels, one month before his execution, given to the
Ministers at Edinburgh, January 17, 1688. "Martyred on the
third day over his 26th birthday," Howie notes that he was "the last
of the 'Worthies' who suffered martyrdom in Scotland," for within a year
William of Orange was proclaimed King (Scots Worthies, p. 549). On the scaffold, only seconds before his
death, Howie recounts Renwick's final testimony:
He spoke thus to the people, much to the purpose
of his written testimony," (i.e this book): "Spectators, I am come
here this day to lay down my life for adhering to the truths of Christ, for
which I am neither afraid not ashamed to suffer. Nay, I bless the Lord that
ever He counted me worthy, or enabled me to suffer anything for Him; and I
desire to praise His grace that He hath not only kept me from the gross
pollutions of the time, but also from the many ordinary pollutions of children;
and for such as I have been stained with, He hath washed and cleansed me from
them in His own blood. I am this day to lay down my life for these three
things:
1.) For disowning the usurpation and tyranny of
James Duke of York (the professed Papist who then occupied the throne and
persecuted the faithful covenanters--RB).
2.) For preaching that it was unlawful to pay the
cess (tax) expressly exacted for bearing down the Gospel.
3.) For teaching that it was lawful for people to
carry arms for defending themselves in their meeting for the persecuted Gospel
ordinances.
I think a testimony for these is worth many lives;
and if I had ten thousand, I would think it little enough to lay them all down
for the same. Dear friends I die a Presbyterian
Protestant; I own the word of God as the rule of faith and manners; I own the
Confession of Faith, the Larger and Shorter Catechisms, Sum of Saving
Knowledge, Directory of Public and Family Worship, Covenants, National and
Solemn League, Acts of General Assemblies, and all the faithful contendings
that have been for the Covenanted Reformation. I leave my testimony approving
the preaching in the fields, and defending the same by arms. I adjoin my testimony
to all these truths that have been sealed by bloodshed, either on scaffold,
field, or seas, for the cause of Christ. I leave my testimony against Popery,
Prelacy, Erastianism, against all profanity, and everything contrary to sound
doctrine and the power of godliness; particularly against all usurpations and
encroachments made upon Christ's right, the prince of the kings of the earth,
who alone must bear the glory of ruling His own kingdom the Church; and in
particular against the absolute power affected by this usurper, that belongs to
no mortal, but is the incommunicable prerogative of Jehovah, and against his
Toleration flowing from this absolute power (Scots Worthies, pp. 546-547).
Thus, in Renwick's final spoken words, the important truths found in this
book (being a copy of what Renwick knew to be among his last written words) are
greatly accentuated. For it was for these words of faithful testimony to
Christ's Kingship, in their numerous particulars summarized above, that Renwick
gained the martyr's crown and was ushered into the presence of God.

RIDGELEY, THOMAS
Commentary on the Larger Catechism
(2 volumes)
Originally entitled: A Body of Divinity:
Wherein the Doctrines of the Christian Religion are Explained and Defended.
Being the Substance of Several Lectures on the Assembly's Larger Catechism, we have re-titled it to better reflect its contents
for contemporary readers. Consisting of over 1300
pages, this massive and extensive two-volume commentary on the Westminster
Larger Catechism is unrivaled in
scope or extensiveness.
Ridgeley himself notes, in "The Author's
Preface" (p. ix),
The work is large,
but the vast variety of subjects will render it more tolerable.... especially
since it is rather designed to be read in families than committed to memory...
The editor of this edition, John Wilson,
pronounces Ridgeley's work as "the best book
of its class," stating,
no
book in the English language, or, so far as I know, in any other, will serve so
efficiently the purposes of a daily companion to a reflecting Christian in his
inquiries into Divine truth, or a guide to a candidate for the Christian
ministry in introducing him to his theological studies (p. xi)... In 1731 appeared the first edition of Mr.
Ridgeley's great work -- that in connection with which chiefly his name lives
in history, and whose influence, as an instrument of good, will probably render
him celebrated and useful for generations to come... (p. xxii).
Moreover Wilson writes,
a
taste, however, for the racy and substantial theological writings of the days
of Britain's moral giants has of late revived; and it will scarcely fail to
adopt, as one of the richest dishes of its multifarious banquet for the
intellect and the soul, Dr. Ridgeley's Body of Divinity (p. xxi).
Additionally, Wilson concludes his "Life
of the Author" with these words,
His method of reasoning
he has adapted to the capacities of those who are unacquainted with the
abstruse terms made use of by metaphysicians and schoolmen, and when introduced
into subjects of theology, have a tendency rather to perplex than to improve
the mind. His scheme of divinity is evidently
Calvinistic; but; then, he has
explained his subjects with so much moderation and latitude, as to obviate many
of the objections raised against the system of doctrines that passes under that
name. Upon the whole, it is probable that the English language
does not furnish a work of this nature that, for perspicuity of language,
extent of research, accuracy of judgement, and judicious description of the
numerous subjects that fall under examination, any way equals this work of Dr.
Ridgeley... he was accounted one of
the most considerable divines of his age (emphasis added, p. xxiii).

Works of Nicholas Ridley
Ridley was "an eminent reformer and Protestant martyr... Having concurred
in the proclamation of Lady Jane Grey, he was committed to the Tower. Condemned
to death for heresy and burnt in 1555" (Darling, Cyclopedia
Bibliographica, p. 2557). "Of all our English martyrs, ...
Ridley has been esteemed by far the most learned... he learned to repeat,
without book, almost all the epistles in Greek... The courage and zeal he
manifested in promoting the (first English--RB) reformation was such, that he
was considered, next to Cranmer, its greatest supporter amongst the clergy...
the purity of his life corresponded with his knowledge... The reformation was
greatly promoted by his learning, zeal, and active exertions while he lived,
and perhaps more so by his death in its defence. In England, as everywhere
else, the ancient observation has been verified, that the blood of the martyrs
is the seed of the church" (Thomas Smith, Select Memoirs of the Lives
Labours, and Sufferings, of Those Pious and Learned English and Scottish
Divines, p. 173 ff., 1828, [$19.99 P,
$29.00 HP]). Along with a biographical notice, and among 16 other works,
letters, and disputations, this book contains Ridley's "Brief Declaration
or Treatise Against Transubstantiation" ("Ridley is allowed to have
been master of that subject more than any man of his age," Smith, p. 175),
his "Treatise Against Image Worship," and his "Conferences with
Latimer." Printed from the 1843 Parker Society edition, indexed, 485

The Duty of Covenanting, and the Permanent Obligation of Religious
Covenants (1853)
Excerpted from the Reformed Presbyterian Catechism below, this book deals with an
almost forgotten ordinance of God. It explains what covenants are, while
contrasting them with oaths, vows and law. Furthermore, it distinguishes
between civil and religious covenants and shows how the individual, family,
church or nation can (and should) enter into covenants -- especially religious
covenants. Explains why, when and how covenants are binding on posterity,
citing abundant Scriptural proof for each assertion made. Here is a sample
argument from this book, demonstrating how even covenants made between men are
viewed as binding upon posterity by God himself: "Another instance in
which posterity is recognized in covenant obligation is found in Joshua 9:15.
This covenant was made between the children of Israel and the Gibeonites.
Between four and five hundred years after that time, the children of Israel are
visited with a very severe famine, in the days of David. 2 Sam. 21:1. And it is
expressly declared by the Lord that, 'It is for Saul, and for his bloody house,
because he slew the Gibeonites.' And at the same time, v. 2, that very covenant
is recognized, and the breach of it is stated, as being the formal reason of
the divine displeasure. Now, had it not been for this covenant, the extirpation
of the Gibeonites would not have been imputed to Israel as a thing criminal;
for they were comprehended in Canaanitish nations, which God had commanded them
to root out" (pp. 139-140). Take the time to look up these verses. This
subject has great bearing on the unity of the church, the Christian's response
to godless covenant-breaking nations, hermeneutics, the family and general
faithfulness to God (because many today -- individually, ecclesiastically, and
nationally -- are breaking covenants which God still views as binding though
they are oblivious to this obligation). Great price too!

The Duty of Nations, in their National Capacity, to Acknowledge and
Support the True Religion (1853)
Excerpted from the Reformed Presbyterian Catechism below, this book deals with
the inescapable necessity, of the demand found in the Word of God, for the
Civil establishment of Christ and King and Lawgiver over every nation on earth.
If you are sick of the cease-fire with humanism, set forth by the syncretistic,
Satanic and pragmatic pagan politicians of our day, (those who bargain with
votaries of Antichrist [the Pope], publicly tolerate all manner of false
religions (e.g. Islam) and idolatry, and compose their policy and draw their
pretended authority from the beast [and not the Word of God], this book is for
you! For all pagan politics is summed up in the words of the Cameronian
(Covenanter) political philosopher Alexander Shields, as "rotting away
under the destructive distempers of detestable neutrality, loathsome
lukewarmness, declining, and decaying in corruptions, defections, divisions,
distractions, confusions; and so judicially infatuated with darkness and
delusions, that they forget and forego the necessary testimony of the day"
(A HIND LET LOOSE, 1797 edition, p. 20). Pick up this book and begin the
political walk in the "footsteps of the flock," traveling the
covenanting road of Reformation and Scripture (with the magisterial Reformers
of the past)!

The Form and Function of Apostolic Church Government
Edited by Larry Birger, Jr.
Concise and compelling, this excerpt from Roberts', Reformed Presbyterian
Catechism (also available from SWRB), is a valuable introduction to
biblical, or apostolic, church government. It demonstrates, with a wealth of
scriptural quotation and discussion, that only Presbyterianism has been
instituted by Christ as the government of his church. Roberts also gives a
brief, but helpful, summary of what this government looks like in practice
(i.e., the function of apostolic church government). His question and answer
format makes for comfortable study, preparing the reader for more in-depth
treatments -- such as those found in The Divine Right of Church Government, by Sundry London Ministers (written at the time of
the Westminster Assembly), and Samuel Rutherford's classic, Due Right
of Presbyteries.

The Silent War: Ministering to
Those Trapped In the Deception of Pornography (2000)
"Amid the smoky dance clubs and seedy sections of town, there exists a
thriving pornography industry. But it doesn't end there, and so the danger to
men is all the greater. For in hotel rooms, trendy bookstores, television
screens, and internet websites, there is enough viewing of pornographic
materials to trap lives forever. It is this world that author Henry Rogers
reveals to us in a book that has too few peers. The Silent War, through interviews, statistics, and other facts,
traces the unraveling of American men by the claws of pornography. Rogers...
discusses his own battle with this terrible addiction, then builds concrete
steps for helping others climb out of the pit. The Silent War is a lifeline in a world in love with evil"

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
Christ Dying, and Drawing Sinners to Himself (1647, 1727 edition)
The
title continues (providing a nice summary for this rare valuable work): "Or, A Survey of our Saviour in His Soul-Suffering, His
Loveliness in his Death, and the Efficacy thereof. In Which Some Cases of
Soul-trouble in weak Believers, Grounds of Submission under the Absence of
Christ, with the Flowings and Heightenings of free Grace, are opened. Delivered
in Sermons on the Gospel according to John, Chap. xii. ver. 27, 28, 29, 30, 31,
32, 33. Where are also interjected some necessary Digressions, for the Times,
touching divers Errors of Antinomians; and a short Vindication of the Doctrine
of Protestants, from the Arminian pretended Universality of Christ's Dying for All
and every One of Mankind; the moral and feigned Way of irresistable Conversion
of Sinners; and what Faith is required of all within the visible Church, for
the Want whereof, many are condemned."
The Dictionary
of Scottish Church History and Theology
says of this work, "Rutherford's writings
during the London years provide a significant commentary of the theology of the
Westminster Confession and Catechisms. In
Christ Dying and Drawing Sinners to Himself Rutherford elaborately scrutinizes the Antinomian notion
that the law has no obligation for the Christian" (p. 736). This book contains an extensive index, is 760 pages in
length and is an excellent example of sound and faithful Covenanter preaching,
balancing both faith (doctrine) and manners (practice). Classic
Rutherford!

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
The Cruel Watchman: A Sermon on Song 5:7-10 (1728)
Here, Rutherford, in his own words, deals
with two major topics:
1. What befell the
Church in seeking her Lord; the Watchman gave her strokes... Church-governors
are sometimes Church-persecutors: Scribes and Pharisees, and high Priests are
always against Christ and his disciples (something Covenanters in every age
know only too well--RB).
2. What speech fell
out between her and her fellow-friends; and there is a dialogue between them.
Also contains sections on godly zeal, the
pursuit of holiness and truth, assurance, warfare with the devil, standing with
Christ through persecution, and much more! 48 pages.

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
The Divine Right of Church Government and Excommunication:
A Peaceable Dispute for the Perfection of the Holy Scripture in Point of
Ceremonies and Church Government in which the Removal of the Service Book is
Justified. The
Six Books of Erastus Against Excommunication are Examined; with a Vindication
of the Eminent Divine Theodore Beza Against the Aspersions of Erastus, The
Arguments of Mr. William Pryn, Richard Hooker, Dr. Morton... and the Doctors of
Aberdeen; Touching Will-Worship, Ceremonies, Imagery, Idolatry, Things
Indifferent, An Ambulatory Government; The Due and Just Power of the Magistrate
in Matters of Religion, and the Arguments of Mr. Pryn, in so Far as they Side
with Erastus, are Moderately Discussed.
(Facsimile,
1646, also contains: "Scandal and Christian Libertie")
Over
750 pages which Walker says "contains the
amplest exposition and vindication of our old ecclesiastical principles."
Rutherfurd here gives a classic defense of
Presbyterianism, touching on both church government and "the due and just
power of the Magistrate in matters of Religion."
Regarding worship, he touches on imagery, idolatry, things
indifferent, ceremonies and will worship. Sherman
Isbell describes this book as follows:
"Rutherford
asserts that there is delineated in the NT a form of Church government by
elders and Presbyteries which is of permanent obligation; more-over, that
discipline and suspension from the sacraments are vested with church officers
rather than with the Christian civil magistrate. The
book also expounds the Westminster Assembly's principle that the mode of
acceptable worship is regulated by the will of Christ as king speaking in the
Scriptures; the Church is not at liberty to alter or invent anything in worship
or government which goes beyond the pattern in God's Word. Rutherford's writings during the London years provide a
significant commentary on the theology of the Westminster Confession and
Catechisms" (Dictionary of Scottish Church History and
Theology, pp. 735-36).
Innes
notes that Rutherford had "no hesitation in including among matters of
faith -- first, fundamental points; second, superstructions built upon the
fundamentals; third, circa fundamentalia, things about matters of faith;" making this an important look at
the teaching surrounding the Scottish view of the visible church, close
communion, etc.
An
exceedingly rare gem by this celebrated Presbyterian divine and Scottish
commissioner to the famous Westminster Assembly.

"When

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
The Due Right of Presbyteries or a Peaceable Plea for the
Government of the Church of Scotland...
(1644)
Almost
800 pages long, Rutherfurd here deals with church membership,
separation from the visible church, the civil magistrate and religion,
communion among churches, the errors of the independents (specifically in New
England) and much more. This could be
considered the Lex Rex of church government -- another exceedingly
rare masterpiece of Presbyterianism!
Characterized
by Walker as sweeping "over a wider field than most. Most essential
points which Gillespie has barely touched, Rutherfurd carefully considers; as, for instance, the nature of the visible church as
such, and its constituent elements. Even in the Erastian controversy he is a
necessary supplement to his great contemporary. It is something to me
altogether amazing, the mass of thinking about Church questions you have in
those writings."
Bannerman, in his Church of Christ calls this a "very learned and
elaborate treatise."
Here
is a sample of Mr. Rutherford's writing:
"A
private subtraction and separation from the Ministry of a known wolf and seducer,...
this the Law of nature will warrant... as Parker saith from Saravia, 'it is
lawful to use that blameless and just defence, if the bad church-guide cannot
be deposed.' So the son may save himself by a just defence in fleeing from his
mad father, or his distracted friend coming to kill him. Now this defence is
not an authoritative act, nor [a] judicial act of authority, but a natural act
that is common to any private person, yea to all without the true Church as
well as within to take that care in extreme necessity, for the safety of their
souls, that they would do for the safety of their bodies" (1642, cited in The
Original Covenanter and Contending Witness magazine [http://www.covenanter.org/]).

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
The Excellence and Worth of the Gospel (c. 1640)
This
sermon is read by elder Lyndon Dohms (1998) and taken from the book Quaint
Sermons of Samuel Rutherford (see
below). It proclaims the power of the gospel for pulling down all strongholds
raised against it. It exhibits God's sovereignty
while blasting the Arminian heresy and toppling its vaunted idol of "free
will." It demonstrates how the gospel is a love letter from God to His
elect and how the Lord's arrows always hit their mark (particular redemption,
irresistible grace, etc.). Rutherford also
delineates the marks by which one can be assured that a work of grace has been
begun in the heart by God. Hypocrisy is also exposed in the most
pointed manner. The place of the law and the gospel in salvation are given.
True repentance is contrasted with false repentance, as is true assurance with
false assurance, plus much more. A very practical
sermon from one of the greatest preachers and theologians of all time,
exhibiting why Rutherford is considered a protesting Covenanter of the first
rank.

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
Exercitationes Apologeticae Pro Divina Gratia... Adversus Jacobum
Arminium ejusque asseclas, & Jesuitas... (1636, 1651 edition)
In
English this title reads "Apologetical
exercises on behalf of divine grace, against James Arminius and his followers,
and the Jesuits" (as translated by Thomas Roche).
"An elaborate treatise against Arminianism. It provoked
the hostility of Sydserf, Bishop of Galloway, who summoned the author before
the High Commission Court. Rutherford was banished to Aberdeen, the stronghold
of prelacy, where he wrote his Letters (see below for this title), and carried on a discussion with the
Aberdeen doctors, overmatching them on all points of the controversy.
The book established his fame, and
brought him back from Antwoth, (whither he had ventured after the overthrow of
Prelacy), to the chair of divinity in St. Andrews" (Johnston, Treasury
of the Scottish Covenant, p. 308.
Maclean,
in "Arminianism:
Another Gospel," writes,
"As
a direct result of his book against Arminianism, Rutherford was put through the
form of a 'Trial' by a group of Arminian bishops who were led by Sydserff of
Galloway, deprived of his pastoral charge at Anwoth and banished to the town of
Aberdeen. In a letter Rutherford wrote to a minister in Ireland, Robert
Cunningham, he says: 'The cause that ripened their hatred was my book
against the Arminians, whereof they
accused me, on those three days I appeared before them,' and in a letter from
Aberdeen in 1637 to Mr. John Ferguson of Ochiltree, Rutherford refers to his
trial, saying, "I was judicially accused for my book against the
Arminians, and commanded by the
Chancellor to acknowledge I had done a fault in writing against Dr. Jackson, a
wicked Arminian."
NOTE: This book is written entirely in LATIN. 545 pages.

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
An Exhortation at a Communion to a Scots Congregation in
London (1728)
If Cant was the
apostle of the Covenant, and Warriston its pen, and Peden its prophet,
Rutherford was something more than its bard, a sensitive reed shaken with the
wind of a stormful age, and giving out soft music that touched the soul to
tears. He was the strong brain, the dura medulla, the intellectual fibre of the Covenant... He was an out
and out Covenanter, a protester of Protesters (sometimes called Steelites
today--RB), ready by pen or tongue to defend the blue banner even unto death
(Blair as cited in Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 304).
A topic of great interest, by one of the
greats of Church history (and a classic defender of close communion). 16 pages.

Fourteen Communion Sermons (2nd edition, 1877)
All
who relish Samuel Rutherford's Letters will welcome the reprint of this volume, preached by him at sacramental occasions in the years
1630, 1634, and 1637. Andrew Bonar, who wrote the preface and notes, added two
other sermons from 1630 and 1633 respectively.
All breathe the same spirit as the famous Letters and are full of racy remark and

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
A Free Disputation Against Pretended Liberty of Conscience (1649 edition)
Rutherford's Free Disputation, though scarce (with maybe only a few
copies of the actual book left in existence), is still one of his most
important works. Though Rutherford is
affectionately remembered in our day for his Letters, or for laying the foundations of constitutional
government (against the divine right of kings) in his unsurpassed Lex Rex, his Free Disputation should not be overlooked -- for it contains the same
searing insights as Lex, Rex. In
fact, this book should probably be known as Rutherford's "politically
incorrect" companion volume to Lex, Rex. A sort of sequel aimed at driving
pluralists and antinomians insane.
Written against "the Belgick Arminians, Socinians, and other Authors contending for
lawlesse liberty, or licentious Tolerations of Sects and Heresies," Rutherford explains the undiluted Biblical
solution to moral relativism, especially as it is expressed in ecclesiastical
and civil pluralism! (Corporate
pluralism being a violation of the first commandment and an affront to the holy
God of Scripture). He also deals with conscience, toleration, penology
(punishment), and the judicial laws, as related to both the civil and
ecclesiastical realms. Excellent sections are also included which address
questions related to determining the fundamentals
of religion, how covenants bind us, the perpetual obligation of social
covenants (with direct application to the Solemn League and Covenant and the
covenant-breaking of Cromwell and his sectarian supporters), whether the
punishing of seducing teachers be persecution of conscience, and much more.
Walker adds these comments and context
regarding Rutherford's Free Disputation,
The principle of toleration
was beginning to be broached in England, and in a modified shape to find
acceptance there. Samuel Rutherford was alarmed, or rather, I should say, he
was horrified, for he neither feared the face of man or argument. He rushed to
the rescue of the good old view... It is not so easy to find a theoretical
ground for toleration; and Rutherford has many plausible things to say against
it. With the most perfect confidence, he argues that
it is alike against Scripture and common sense that you should have two
religions side by side. It is outrageous ecclesiastically, it is sinful civilly. He does not, however, take what I call the
essentially persecuting ground. He does not hold that the magistrate is to
punish religion as religion. Nay, he strongly maintains that the civil
magistrate never aims at the conscience. The magistrate, he urges, does not
send anyone, whether a heretic (who is a soul murderer--RB) or a murderer, to
the scaffold with the idea of producing conversion or other spiritual result, but
to strengthen the foundations of civil order. But if he gives so much power to
the king, he is no lover of despotism withal: the king himself must be under
law. To vindicate this great doctrine is the object of another book, the
celebrated Lex, Rex; of which it
has been said by one competent to judge, that it first clearly developed the
constitutionalism which all men now accept" (Theology and
Theologians..., pp. 11-12).
In our day Francis
Schaeffer, and numerous others, have critiqued many of the problems
found in modern society, but most have spent little time developing explicitly
Biblical solutions -- especially regarding the theoretical foundations that
Rutherford addresses here. Rutherford's Free
Disputation provides a detailed
blueprint for laying the foundations for Reformation (in all areas of life)
that must be laid before any lasting, God-honoring solutions will be found.
Furthermore, Rutherford and his writings were the enemies of all governments
not covenanted with Christ. This book will give you a very clear picture as to
why "the beast" (civil and ecclesiastical) has reserved his special
hatred for such teaching. As Samuel Wylie noted,
[t]he
dispute, then, will not turn upon the point whether religion should be civilly
established... but it is concerning what religion ought to be civilly
established and protected, -- whether the religion of Jesus alone should be
countenanced by civil authority, or every blasphemous, heretical, and
idolatrous abomination which the subtle malignity of the old serpent and a
heart deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, can frame and devise,
should be put on an equal footing therewith (Two Sons of Oil: or, The Faithful Witness For Magistracy and
Ministry Upon a Scriptural Basis,
softcover).
Can our generation swallow
Rutherford's hard, anti-pluralistic, Covenanter medicine, poured forth from the
bottle of the first commandment, without choking on their carnal dreams of a
free and righteous society divorced from God (and His absolute claims upon
everyone and everything)? Not without
the enabling power of the Holy Spirit -- that is for sure!
In summary, this book answers
all the hardest questions theonomists (and their wisest and best opponents)
have been asking for the last 20-30 years (and these answers are much more in
depth than any we have seen in the last couple of millennia [less about a
century to account for the apostles]).
As the reader will discover, Rutherford was a wealthy man when it came to
wisdom (and much advanced theologically), and those who take the time to gaze
into the King's treasure house, as exhibited in this book, will find that they
are greatly rewarded. Furthermore, because of its uncompromising stand upon the
Word of God, this book is sure to be unpopular among a wicked and adulterous
generation. However, on the other hand, it is
sure to be popular among the covenanted servants of King Jesus!
This is one of the best
books for advanced study of the Christian faith.
We have now obtained an easy-to-read, amazingly clear copy of this very rare,
old treasure. Great price too, considering that a copy of the 1649 edition,
containing this quality of print, could cost upwards of $1000 on the rare book
market -- though it is unlikely you would ever see a copy for sale! Over 450
pages.

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
The Glory, Majesty, Dominion and Power of Jesus Christ (1643)
Here Rutherford covers a wide range of topics including Christ's kingship and dominion over
civil governments, what
lawful power (civil and ecclesiastical) is, God's providence, suffering
(especially among those covenanted to Him), the oppression and martyrdom of the
saints, the wrath of God, apologetics, the fear of God, the visible church,
assurance and the weak believer, the free offer of the Gospel, the sovereignty
of God, antinomianism, Arminianism, and much more. However, whatever the
subject, Rutherford can be found focusing on and exalting the Lord Jesus Christ
and His truth in a way that few others have been granted the ability to do
-- notwithstanding the fact that he himself wrote, "I have neither tongue
nor pen to express to you the happiness of such as are in Christ" (Letters
of Samuel Rutherford, p. 47). Classic Rutherford, preached before some of the most
powerful civil leaders of his day! 64 pages.

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
Influences of the Life of Grace (1658)
The title continues: "Or, A Practical
Treatise Concerning the Way, Manner, and Means of Having and Improving of
Spiritual Disposition, and Quickening Influences from Christ the Resurrection
and the Life."
Samuel Rutherford,
so much on high that you wonder how he had patience to amass such learning, and
write so many books -- perhaps the completest
instance of absorbing affection for the person of a living Saviour, the
liveliest example of a life hid with Christ in God, which these latter ages
have produced (Dr. J. Hamilton as cited in Johnston, Treasury of
the Scottish Covenant, p. 304).
This is the first time (to our knowledge)
that this Rutherford classic has been reprinted since it first appeared almost
three-and-a-half centuries ago -- and it is long overdue, as it contains many
amazing insights into conversion, the depths of sanctification, and communion
with Christ that you are unlikely to find in many (any?) books on this topic
that have been written since. 472 pages.

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
Letters of Samuel Rutherford
(Complete and Unabridged)
Spurgeon said, "What
a wealth of spiritual ravishment we have here! Rutherford is beyond all praise
of men. Like a strong-winged eagle he soars into the highest heaven and with
unblenched eye he looks into the mystery of love divine." Continuing, he
comments, "let the world know that Spurgeon held Rutherford's Letters to be the nearest thing to inspiration which can be found in
all the writings of men... none penetrated further into the innermost heart of
holy fellowship with Jesus. Whenever we think of him we compare him to Milton's
Uriel, the angel that stood in the sun itself."
Richard Baxter commented,
"Hold off the Bible, such a book as Mr. Rutherford's Letters, the world never saw the like."
And Cecil notes,
"It is one of my classics. Were truth the beam, I have no doubt that if
Homer, and Virgil, and Horace, and all that the world has agreed to idolize,
were weighed against that book, they would be lighter than vanity. He is a real
original" (Remains
cited in Johnston's The Treasury of the Scottish Covenant).
Walker adds his voice to this chorus of praise calling these,
"letters which, I may say, stand all alone in
religious literature... So far as I know, they are the only letters two
centuries old (i.e. when Walker wrote this--RB) which are still a practical
reality in the religious life of Scotland, England, and America. And criticism
cannot get rid of the fact that they continue to retain their hold of human
hearts, -- that they have won a place for themselves besides such books as
Augustine's Confessions or Thomas a Kempis." (Theologians..., p. 8).
The body of this publication is from the
1891 edition of S.R.'s Letters.
It contains Andrew Bonar's sketch of Rutherford's life and biographical notices
of his correspondence, as well as the full compliment of Rutherford's letters. Furthermore, to make this the most complete edition of
Rutherford's Letters ever published, we have added:
1. Robert M'Ward's
original (1664) "Preface To the Christian Reader," of 45 pages (taken
from a 1783 edition of Rutherford's Letters, which is easier to read, being in more modern type).
2. Rutherford's
"Testimony to the Covenanted Work of Reformation, between 1638 and
1649."
3. Rutherford's
"Dying Words, containing several Advices to some Ministers and near
Relations" -- which further corroborates the large body of other evidence
(cf. George Gillespie's dying testimony at the end of his Works, volume 2, for example) testifying to those glorious
truths (of covenanted faithfulness to Christ and separation from malignants)
that were foremost in the minds of the most prominent Covenanters, even moments
before they eternally entered the presence of their Almighty Father.
4. A postscript
from earlier editions of this work (thought to be written by M'Ward).
All
the above sections, which we have added, have been left out of many former
editions of Rutherford's Letters
-- including the Banner of Truth hardcover that was in print a couple of years
ago. This is the first time, to our knowledge, that
these valuable additions (which were at various times published together with
these letters) and the full edition of Ruthrford's Letters have all been gathered into one publication.
The importance of M'Ward's original preface
can be seen when we consider who he was and the part he played in Rutherford's
life and the Reformation of his day. M'Ward was a persecuted and exiled
Protester (exiled for preaching, in 1661, "against the overturning of the
Covenanted Reformation by Parliament," -- Dictionary of Scottish Church
History & Theology, p. 538), who "collected and arranged the papers of his
preceptor, Samuel Rutherford, and gave the world his (Rutherford's--RB) Letters." The Dictionary of Scottish Church History and Theology (pp. 537-38) further notes that McWard "studied at St. Andrews where he was a favorite of Samuel
Rutherford" and that "when Rutherford went to London as a
Commissioner to the Westminster Assembly, McWard accompanied his as an
amanuensis... was a zealous
Protester... in 1661 he preached against an overturning of the Covenanted
Reformation by Parliament, entering a protest in heaven that he desired to be
free from the guilt thereof. He was imprisoned 'for sedition and treasonable
preaching... he helped with the editing and
publication of Rutherford's Examen Arminianismi (Utrecht, 1668)... wrote several tracts to encourage resistance to those
whom he believed were usurpers of power in the Church of Scotland. He asserted
that is was not, as then constituted, 'of the genus Church at all, -- that, by
its mere physical force-raid on the real Church of Scotland, it has proved
itself to be absolutely devoid of ecclesiastical rights.' ... such publications
rendered McWard, with his close friend John Brown of Wamphray (who was also
taught by Rutherford--RB), odious to the regime of Charles II, and diligent
efforts were made to have him expelled from Holland... He continued zealous
against the Indulgences, opposing the efforts of Robert Fleming, his successor,
at conciliation (see Earnest Contendings for the Faith)... Wodrow characterized him as 'a person of great
knowledge, zeal, learning, and remarkable ministerial abilities.'"
The original publication of Rutherford's Letters came just three years after Rutherford's death. M'Ward hoped to strengthen the hands of the persecuted Covenanters
with the publication of his preface and the release of Rutherford's Letters. In his preface
M'Ward sets forth the context (and theological genius) of not only S.R.'s
letters, but also of the turbulent times that drew forth some of the greatest theological
literature ever produced. Among these works we find the Westminster
Standards, the "Solemn League and Covenant" and a large body of other
Presbyterian, Covenanter, and Puritan writings that have been handed down to
posterity, from these very days. These men knew (as M'Ward demonstrates in his
preface to Rutherford's Letters)
that the covenanted cause of Christ would prosper, though it was suffering a
great setback at this time. Additionally, though these covenanted Presbyterians
were blessed with towering and sanctified intellectual abilities, they were no
ivy tower theologians; each, to a man (almost),
were more than willing to suffer and/or die for the covenanted cause of Christ.
M'Ward's preface is an invaluable aid to understanding these men and
their times. Furthermore, this is the
only place that you can obtain a copy of this exceedingly rare and valuable
piece of testimony to the covenanted Reformation, as our "rare bound photocopy editions" are
the first reprintings of this preface in many years.
Additionally, it is very interesting to note
that when these letters were first published in 1664 (note the date, just
shortly after the great ejection), the book was titled Joshua Redivivus
(i.e. revived--RB) or Mr. Rutherford's Letters Divided into Two Parts. The
First, Containing those Which were Written from Aberdeen, Where He was Confined
by a Sentence of the High Commission, Drawn Forth Against Him, Partly on the
Account of His Declining them, Partly Upon the Account of His Non-conformity. The
Second, Containing, Some Which were Written from Anworth, Before He was by the
Prelates Persecution Thrust from His Ministry; and Others Upon Diverse
Occasions Afterward from St. Andrews, London, etc. Now Published, for the Use
of All the People of God; But More Particularly, for Those Who Now Are, or
Afterward May Be Put to Suffering for Christ and His Cause; By a Well Wisher
(Robert M'Ward--RB) to the Work of the People of God. These Scriptures followed the full title to further
stress the point of this publication: "They shall put you out of the
synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he
doeth God service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have
not known the Father, nor me" (John 16:2-3); and "And ye became
followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction,
with joy of the Holy Ghost: So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in
Macedonia and Achaia" (1 Thes. 1:6-7).
These letters were put out by
Covenanters, for Covenanters, in defense of the Covenanted Reformation -- to
strengthen the hands of the suffering covenanted servants (and martyrs) of
Christ. M'Ward, who was banished to
Holland (where he co-ministered with John Brown of Wamphray), specifically
notes in his preface that his purpose in publishing the first edition of
Rutherford's Letters (1664) was to bring comfort and encouragement to those 2000
ministers recently ejected for faithfulness to the Solemn League and Covenant.
This was to be accomplished by setting forth
Rutherford's example of faithfulness, courage and zeal, as seen throughout
these letters, under similar circumstances of suffering. This
book was also intended to minister to the myriads of faithful Covenanters who
were at that time experiencing increasingly violent persecution and opposition.
Moreover, as Andrew Bonar
notes in his prefatory "Sketch of Samuel Rutherford" (included in
this edition) These letters will ever be precious to:
1. All who are
sensible of their own, and the Church's decay and corruptions.
2. All who
delight in the Surety's imputed righteousness.
3. All who
rejoice in the Gospel of free grace.
4. All who seek
to grow in holiness.
5. All afflicted
persons.
6. All who love
the Person of Christ.
7. All who love
that blessed hope and the glorious appearing of the great God and Saviour.
Another Rutherford masterpiece, not to be
missed! 828 pages. Enjoy the feast!

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
Lex, Rex, or the Law and the Prince
Without a doubt one of the greatest books on political philosophy
ever written. Rutherford's
teaching, taken from Scripture, decimated the "divine right of kings"
doctrine and set up Scripture as the standard by which to judge the actions,
beliefs and constitutions of civil government. Picking up where Brutus, in A Defense of Liberty
Against Tyrants (http://www.swrb.com/catalog/d.htm),
left off, Rutherford here has penned a great
Christian charter of liberty against all forms of civil tyranny -- vindicating
the Scriptural duty to resist tyrants as an act of loyalty to God.
Subtitled:
"A dispute for the just prerogative of King and people: containing the
reason and causes of the most necessary defensive wars of the kingdom of
Scotland, and their expedition for the aid and help of their dear brethren of
England; in which their innocency is asserted, and a full answer is given to a
seditious pamphlet, entitled, ... The Sacred and Royal Prerogative of Christian
Kings..." Rutherford used this book to promote
the great work of covenanted reformation taking place in his day. Murray,
in his Life of Samuel Rutherford
(1827) notes,
"The
work caused great sensation on its appearance. Bishop Guthrie mentions, that
every member of the (Westminster--RB) assembly 'had in his hand that book
lately published by Mr. Samuel Rutherford, which is so idolized, that whereas
Buchanan's treatise (de jure Regni apud Scotos) was looked upon as an oracle, this coming forth, it
was slighted as not anti-monarchical enough, and Rutherford's Lex Rex only thought authentic...' During the period which followed
the death of Charles I. to the restoration, Rutherford took an active part in
the struggles of the church in asserting her rights. Cromwell had in the
meantime usurped the throne, and independency held sway in England. On the
death of Cromwell in 1658, measures were taken for the restoration of Charles
II. to the throne. The Scottish Parliament met in 1651, when the national
covenant was recalled -- Presbyterianism abolished -- and all the decrees of
Parliament, since 1638, which sanctioned the Presbyterian system, were
rescinded. The rights of the people were thus torn from them -- their liberties
trampled upon -- and the whole period which followed, till the martyrdom of
Renwick in 1688, was a scene of intolerant persecution and bloodshed. Rutherford, as may be supposed, did not escape
persecution in such a state of things. His work Lex, Rex, was considered by the government as 'inveighing against
monarchy and laying the ground for rebellion;' and ordered to be burned by the
hand of the common hangman at Edinburgh. It met with similar treatment at St.
Andrews, and also at London; and a proclamation was issued, that every person
in possession of a copy, who did not deliver it up to the king's solicitor,
should be treated as an enemy to the government. Rutherford himself
was deprived of his offices both in the University and the Church, and his
stipend confiscated; he was ordered to confine himself within his own house,
and was summoned to appear before the Parliament at
Edinburgh, to answer a charge of high treason. It may easily be
imagined what his fate would have been had he lived to obey the mandate."
At
this time Rutherford was already terminally ill and uttered his famous words,
"I have got summons already before a Superior Judge and Judicatory, and I
behove to answer to my first summons, and ere your day come, I will be where
few kings and great folks come." Don't miss this title, as its
contents will become more and more valuable to the extent that present civil
governments deny the Lordship of Christ, "frame wickedness by law,"
and persecute the faithful.

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
A Peaceable and Temperate Plea for Paul's Presbytery in
Scotland (1642)
The
title continues: "Or, A modest and Brotherly Dispute of the government of
the Church of Scotland, Wherein, Our Discipline is demonstrated to be the true
Apostolic way of divine Truth, and the Arguments on the contrary are friendly
dissolved, the grounds of Separation and the Independents of particular
Congregations, in defence of Ecclesiastical Presbyteries, Synods and
Assemblies, are Examined and tried." "'This,'
says Murray, 'is one of the most temperate, judicious, and best written works
he (Rutherford--RB) ever gave the world. It corresponds in every respect with the promise
which its title holds out; with this exception, that it is much more learned,
dispassionate, and conclusive than the promise implies.
It must have had a very considerable effect on public sentiment, and have
served to pave the way for that introduction of the Presbyterian system into
England which soon took place'" (cited in Rutherford's Letters, page 612, footnote 1, emphases added). It is
another classic by one of the grand old leaders of the Protesters (i.e. the
Covenanters who upheld the continuing obligation of the National and Solemn
League and Covenant and the biblical attainments of the second Reformation). Thomas Smith calls Rutherford a "greatly
experienced Christian, and celebrated divine," further noting that
"Mr. Rutherford's reputation for piety, learning, and sound theology, was
so highly raised, both at home and abroad, by his writings against the
Arminians and Jesuits, which were composed in Latin, that, upon the death of
the learned Dematius in 1651, the magistrates of
Utrecht in Holland invited him to the divinity chair in that university"
(Select Memoirs... of Pious and Learned English and Scottish Divines, pp. 636, 639). One need
only read Rutherford to understand why he was held in such high esteem,
internationally, by the Reformed community. 340 pages.

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
The Power of Faith and Prayer
This
book was published posthumously in 1713. This is the first time it has been
republished. Those who love the writings of Rutherford will value this book. It
is full of his characteristic style of devotional writing. He expounds one of
the miracles of Christ and unfolds two great matters which concern the
Christian, faith and prayer (back cover).

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL, JAMES GUTHRIE, WILLIAM GUTHRIE, ROBERT TRAIL, JAMES NISBET,
& NUMEROUS OTHER PROTESTERS
A Protest Against the Unlawful, Unfree and Unjust Assembly
of the Resolutioners
(1652)
Hewison writes of this paper,
"(t)he
Protesters compeared (at the pretended assembly of the Resolutioners--RB) to
lodge a protestation subscribed by 63 ministers and 80 laymen, who declared the
Assembly to be 'unlawful, unfrie, and unjust.' The Assembly threatened them with
discipline" (The Covenanters,
vol. 2, p. 43).
Rutherford and the other
Protesters held their ground and refused to have ecclesiastical fellowship with
the backsliding, covenant-breaking Resolutioners -- a lesson on faithful
biblical separation that has long since been forgotten.
This work gives us a little slice of the
Protesters views during this most important period of controversy in the Church
of Scotland: for as Anderson notes,
"(f)uture events showed the impolicy of these Resolutions.
The men who were admitted by them into places of power and trust in the army
and state, became, as the Protesters always predicted, the persecutors of the
Church. Had the counsels of the Protesters prevailed, the twenty-eight years'
persecution might not have existed" (cited in Treasury of
the Scottish Covenant, p. 120).
Dodds adds this testimony,
"Last fatal
sign that the ancient spirit and the freedom of Scotland were about to
disappear under a total eclipse, the Kirk hitherto impregnable, unyielding Kirk,
stooped down from her old height and emitted Resolutions in favour of those
proceedings of the royalists. Against these
Resolutions, a large, bold, fierce minority headed by James Guthrie of Stirling
protested that the principles of the Covenant should be maintained"
(Ibid.).
Finally, Johnston writes,
"Durham's
last treatise had reference to the 'scandalous divisions' thus created, and
what is particularly noticeable is the circumstance that David Dickson's last
hours were embittered by the recollection of his short-sightedness in adopting
these Resolutions. To a lady who
visited him on his death-bed he said, 'Madam, I must
confess, the Protesters have been truer prophets than we were'"
(Idib.) 20 pages.

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
Rutherford's Catechism Containing the Sum of Christian
Religion
"From
the beginning of his pastorate at Anwoth and throughout his ministry Rutherford
was said to have been a keen catechist and it was probably during his time at
Anworth that the following catechism was written, at least in part. Mitchell
suggests that it would 'not be put into final shape until he went as a
commissioner to the Westminster Assembly, and was engaged in suggesting
materials for the Catechism of the Assembly,'" writes Dickson in the
Preface to the JDB edition. "From the time of his settlement in Anwoth,
Rutherford is said to have given special attention to catechising, both in his
household and in his parish. The tradition as to... Ussher having visited him
in disguise, and submitted to be catechised among the members of his household
on the Saturday evening, if well founded, must be assigned to this period of
his ministry," notes Mitchell in his Catechisms of the Second
Reformation (p. lxiv). Furthermore,
on the authorship of this work Mitchell states, "that
it would be difficult to name any one among the worthies of that age, save the
author of the Letters, who could
have drawn up a Catechism so rich in imagery, so full and practical in all that
relates to the origin and progress of the divine life in the soul, containing
so many of his favourite modes of expression, and so thoroughly moulded
according to the system expanded in his larger theological works"
(Catechisms of the Second Reformation,
p. xxxv). If you would like an easy-reading
primer to the thought of one of the Reformations' theological giants, this is
about as good a place as any to start!
Rutherford's
Catechism is available in A.F. Mitchell's

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
A Survey of the Spiritual Antichrist (1648)
The
subtitle reads:
"Opening the Secrets of Familisme and Antinomianism in the
Antichristian Doctrine of John Saltmarth, and William Del, the present
Preachers of the Army (headed by Oliver Cromwell--RB) now in England, and of
Robert Town, Tobiah Crisp, H. Denne, Eaton and others. In which is revealed the
rise and spring of Antinomianism, Familists, Libertines, Swench-feldians,
Enthysiasts, etc. The minde of Luther a most professed opposer of
Antinomianism, is cleared, and diverse considerable points of the Law and the
Gospel, of the Spirit and the Letter, of the two Covenants, of the nature of
free grace, exercise under temptations, mortification, justification,
sanctification, are discovered. In Two parts."
Also
contains Rutherford's "A brotherly and free Epistle to the patrons and
friends of pretended Liberty of Conscience."
Putting
this work into its context, James Clark, in The Life and Works of Samuel
Rutherford (in the chapter titled
"Antinomianism") writes,
"This
is another main controversy into which Samuel Rutherford entered. The term
'Antinomian" signifies one who is 'against God's Law'. The Antinomians
were a major sect in the 1640's. They denounced as 'Legalists' the Christians
who, like Paul, 'serve the law of God' (Rom. 7:25). They asserted that grace
removes the Law out of the Christian's life, as absolutely as it does out of
his salvation. This dangerous heresy, which is still popular, makes it no fault
to disobey God's Moral Law, and turn grace into wantonness. Rutherford
mentioned this heresy in several of his works before publishing in 1648 his
SURVEY OF THE SPIRITUAL ANTICHRIST, written
specifically against the Antinomians. The subtlety of Antinomians is
that they oppose the use of the Law as a positive standard for holy living in
the name of the Gospel! The Apostle
Paul repudiated this error in Rom. 3:31; 6:1,2; Gal. 5:13" (p. 52).

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
A Survey of the Survey of that Summe of Church-Discipline
Penned by Mr. Richard Hooker, Late Pastor of the Church at Hartford upon
Connecticut in New England. Wherein The Way of the Churches in N. England is
now re-examined; Arguments in favour thereof winnowed; The Principles of that
Way discussed; and the Reasons of most seeming strength and nerves removed (1658)
Hooker
"helped found Hartford, Connecticut (1636)... He helped create
Connecticut's 'Fundamental Orders' (1638) and was instrumental in forming the
New England Confederation (1643)" (Encyclopedia of the Reformed Faith). In this book Rutherford
refutes Hooker's Independent views of church government in great detail. In
doing so he has left us much to ponder regarding Presbyterianism, the
constitution of the visible church (as it is revealed in Scripture),
covenanting, separation, discipline, Arminianism, church communion and much
more. Hooker's congregational way is
easily accepted by the flesh and is prominently held by a wide range of
professing Christians today -- from liberals all the way to those who call
themselves Reformed. This book should go a long way to correcting this
prevalent "democratic/egalitarian" heresy. Rutherford
was (and still is through his books) one of the most notable defenders of the
divine right of Presbyterianism since the days of the Apostles. This rare book has been generally unavailable to the
public (as far as we know) for three centuries now -- until this reprinting --
and should be welcomed by all lovers of truth. 521 pages.

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
A Testimony to the Covenanted Work of Reformation Between
1638-1649 in Britain and Ireland
This is Rutherford's dying testimony. It sets forth what he
thought most important to communicate in his last earthly words. Rutherford was one of the Scottish commissioners to
the Westminster Assembly and has been acknowledged by many Reformed theologians
since his time as a theological genius of the first order. Walker said of
Rutherford, "It is not easy to find any one in
Church history with whom to compare this remarkable man... a man of power, I
may say of genius, fresh, bold, penetrating, to whom no subject came amiss,
teeming with intellectual energy, distinguished for his learning, but never cumbered
by it, the greatest scholastic of our Presbyterian Church, and yet we are told,
the plain and faithful preacher, the fieriest of Church leaders and the most
devout of saints, equally at home among the tomes of Aquinas, and writing
letters to a poor congregation. Altogether a sort of intellectual, theological,
religious prodigy!" (Theology and Theologians of Scotland
1560-1750, p. 13). Men graced with Rutherford's abilities, intellect and
faith come but once or twice a millennium. Augustine, Calvin and Gillespie are
others of this class. If you want to know what one of the greats of
church history was thinking just before he went to be with the Lord, this is
the item for you.

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
The Trial and Triumph of Faith
Sermons
preached first in Anwoth, and thereafter, in London on the story of the
Syrophenician woman. Anyone familiar with Rutherford knows that his work is
calculated for great advantage to those who are advanced in the faith. This
work was originally published (1645), as Innes writes, in a "time which those who seek to occupy his (Rutherford's)
exact standpoint have always looked back to as not only the one golden age of
the Church of Scotland, but as the only time when the world around it seemed
prepared to join in its triumph" (adapted from Treasury of
the Scottish Covenant, p. 306). 406
pages.

RUTHERFORD, SAMUEL
Quaint Sermons of Samuel Rutherford Hitherto Unpublished (1885)
As
Andrew Bonar notes in his preface to this book, "Samuel
Rutherford never fails to set Christ on high, for truly he had 'a thirst no
earthly stream could satisfy -- A hunger that must feed on Christ, or die.'"
These sermons, in setting forth the splendor of Christ as revealed in His
Word, will continue to offer much comfort and consolation to contemporary
Christians. Of the sermons that make
up this volume some titles include, "The
Spouse's Longing for Christ (Song of Solomon 5:3-6)," "Fear not, thou
worm Jacob (Isa. 41:14-16)," "The Worth and Excellence of the Gospel
(2 Cor. 10:4-5)," and "The Forlorn Son -- The Fathers Expressed
Welcome (Luke 15:22-23)" -- along with fourteen others. 384 pages.

RYLE, J.C.
Idolatry
"To
study the Reformation debate over idolatry is to peer into the eye of the storm.
'Idolatry' is a fighting word. It presupposes a definition of what is true and
what is false in religion, for an idol cannot be universally recognized as
such; idolatry is not simply the worship of a physical object, but rather any
form of devotion that is judged to be incorrect''(Eire in War Against the Idols, p. 5 [$US29.95]). In this book Ryle gives the
definition, cause, and form of idolatry. He concludes by showing what will end
it.

"Practical Religion is classic
as a manual on the practice of Christianity--a concise guide to the daily
duties, experiences, dangers, privileges, and responsibilities faced by
professing Christians. It is an excellent companion volume to J. C. Ryle's
other classic, Holiness.
In Practical Religion, Ryle expounds
the great central themes of the Christian life with realism, power, and depth.

on the Gospels, has been treasured by
