PURITAN HARD DRIVE REVIEWS

The Puritan Hard Drive - Best Reference Tool Ever!

You will be floored by this product. Amazing!

- John Hendryx, Monergism Books

In the history of the church's sanctification I don't believe there has been a more valuable extra-biblical resource and tool than the Puritan Hard Drive.

It holds some of the most priceless Reformed works of God-centered and Christ-glorifying truth that were ever penned.

Most students, ministers and scholars of the Bible would never personally acquire even half the literal number of books on the Puritan Hard Drive, much less the extreme caliber of its contents.

In God's providence modern day Christians have been chosen to be the recipients of both a theological and practical blessing. May we not squander it.

- Matthew McMahon, Ph.D.  A Puritan's Mind

I want you to know that I have enjoyed my Puritan Hard Drive immensely.

I simply could not have imagined such a resource before getting my hands on it!

To have that much information from a consistent, biblical, orthodox, and gospel-centered point of view is simply astonishing.

Anyone who admires the Puritans simply must have the Puritan Hard Drive.

From Pastors to Ph.D. candidates, there is simply nothing else out there that puts so much at your fingertips.

What an amazing tool for pastors... thank you for your work.

Soli Deo Gloria!

 - Dr. Voddie Baucham, Jr., Grace Family Baptist Church (Spring, TX) http://www.sermonaudio.com/go/38367 and http://www.gracefamilybaptist.net

The Puritan Hard Drive is an exquisite piece of work.

The purchaser of this fine product will have at his fingertips more of the best Reformed literature than he can probably ever get around to reading.

Truly, if a Christian wants to invest wisely in his own growth, this is the best investment he can make at this time.

More than highly recommended!

S. (author listed as only "S")

The Nature and Duty of Covenanting with God (1850)
The author notes, "the great advantages of covenanting with God are forcibly expressed in the same connection from which we have so often quoted. Deut 26:18,19, 'The Lord hath avouched thee -- to make thee high above all nations, which he hath made in praise, and in name, and in honor; and that thou mayest be a holy people unto the Lord thy God, as he hath spoken.' Those, whether individuals or communities, who 'join themselves to the Lord in a perpetual covenant,' have the strongest assurance that it will result to their greatest benefit. 'The mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.' He will make covenanted nations high above all nations..." This booklet presses the high and holy duty of individual and national covenanting with God (and its benefits) -- something which you will not find in contemporary "Christian" bookstores or hear in many pulpits today. Excerpted from the Original Covenanter and Contending Witness
magazine (volumes 3:21-24).

SARFATI, Dr. JONATHAN, B.Sc. (Hons.), Ph.D., F.M.

Refuting Evolution

Refuting Evolution is a hard-hitting critique of the most up-to-date arguments for evolution, to challenge educators, students and parents. It is a powerful, yet concise summary of the arguments against evolution and for creation. It will stimulate much discussion and help students and teachers think more critically about origins. This top-selling book has over 450,000 copies in print. (High School--Adult) 144 pages.

Dr Jonathan Sarfati was born in Ararat, Australia in 1964. He moved to New Zealand as a child and later studied science at Victoria University of Wellington. He obtained a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Chemistry with two physics papers substituted (nuclear and condensed matter physics). His Ph.D. in Chemistry was awarded for a thesis entitled 'A Spectroscopic Study of some Chalcogenide Ring and Cage Molecules'. He has co-authored papers in mainstream scientific journals on high temperature superconductors and selenium-containing ring and cage-shaped molecules. He also had a co-authored paper on high-temperature superconductors published in Nature when he was 22.

Dr Sarfati has been a Christian since 1984. He has long been interested in apologetics, the defense of the faith, and was a co-founder of the Wellington Christian Apologetics Society (New Zealand).1 Creation vs evolution is of course a vital area, because of the ramifications for the doctrines of Creation, the Fall which brought death into the world, and their links to the doctrines of the Incarnation, Atonement and Bodily Resurrection of the God-man Jesus Christ.

In 1999, his first book was published--Refuting Evolution, which countered a teachers guidebook by the National Academy of Sciences, Teaching about Evolution and the Nature of Science, which had been widely circulated and publicized. Refuting Evolution now has 450,000 copies in print. Later that year he was a co-author of the updated and expanded Answers Book [note: now entitled The Creation Answers Book], answering 20 of the most-asked questions about creation/evolution. He later wrote Refuting Evolution 2, countering the PBS Evolution series and an anticreationist article in Scientific American.

In 2004, he wrote Refuting Compromise, defending a straightforward biblical creation timeline and a global flood, and answering biblical and scientific objections, concentrating on the errant teachings of day-age/local flood advocate Hugh Ross. It has been acclaimed as 'the most powerful biblical and scientific defense of a straightforward view of Genesis creation ever written!' See the introductory chapter and some reviews.

In 2006, he co-authored 15 Reasons to Take Genesis as History with Don Batten, as a concise reference guide for Christians, including pastors and theologians, why Genesis can be trusted as real history of Creation about 6000 years ago and a global Flood.

Refuting Evolution 2

Respected CMI scientist Dr Jonathan Sarfati, author of the best-seller Refuting Evolution, has written a sequel that comprehensively refutes arguments to support evolution (as presented in TV documentaries and Scientific American). Read world-leading evolutionists in their own words, and then find straightforward answers from science and the Bible. Refuting Evolution 2 will prepare you to answer the best arguments thrown at you by peers, teachers, neighbours and sceptics. (High School--Adult) 240 pages.

SCHLISSEL, STEVE (REFUTED)

FREE! (Contra Schlissel's Denial of Reformed Worship)

SCHLISSEL, STEVE (REFUTED, AGAIN)

A Brief Critique of Steven M. Schlissel's Articles Against the Regulative Principle of Worship

by Brian M. Schwertley

Brian Schwertley has challenged both Steve Schlissel and Andrew Sandlin (Chalcedon Report) to a public debate on the worship issues that are dealt with in this paper. Mr. Schwertley has also stated that he is willing to have the complete debate taped and made available to the public. Thus far, both Mr. Schlissel and Mr. Sandlin have refused to accept this challenge.

We pray that our publicizing of Brian Schwertley's FREE article will be used of the Lord to help others from falling into the same type of Romish/Episcopal errors that Mr. Schlissel now publicly espouses against the biblical and historic Reformed Faith (regarding worship). It would also be a blessing (for which we pray) to see Mr. Schlissel granted repentance in this matter and to see him preaching the Apostolic faith, "the faith which was once delivered unto the saints" (Jude 3), which was so magnificently recovered (through the grace of God) by the best early Reformers and the Puritans and (especially) the Covenanters which followed in their train.

Describing this paper Brian Schwertley writes, "Recently, a series of articles was written by Pastor Steven M. Schlissel against the regulative principle of worship, entitled "All I Really Need to Know About Worship... I Don't Learn from the Regulative Principle." These articles were published in Schlissel's newsletter, Messiah's Mandate, and were reprinted in an edited-abridged form in Chalcedon Report. They received a rather wide audience in Reformed circles and are being referred to by opponents of Reformed worship. The purpose of this essay is to examine Schlissel's main arguments and expose them as false, unscriptural, and based upon poor exegesis and faulty reasoning. After reading Schlissel's articles we want to commend him for his openness and honesty regarding his position on the regulative principle. Many people in Reformed churches give lip service to the regulative principle while doing everything they possibly can to get around it. They confess it with their lips, but dread it with their hearts. They formally adhere to what they in practice continually deny. At least Schlissel, in his quest for human autonomy in worship, is consistent. He jettisons the foundation of Reformed worship altogether and in its place advocates what he calls the "informed principle of worship," which we will see is, in principle and in reality, no different than the Lutheran or Episcopal conception of worship... The arguments offered by Schlissel (and others such as Doug Wilson) regarding the regulative principle are not new but are (in general matters) restatements of old prelatical arguments long ago rejected by the Reformed churches... In essence, it is no different than the typical conservative evangelical understanding of worship. Evangelicals reject the regulative principle and in its place say that we must not do what is forbidden and we must make sure our worship is biblical. This is the old Lutheran-Episcopalian conception of worship. He says that our biblical theology must guide our worship, and that a biblical theology would produce biblical worship... Most conservative Lutherans, low-church Episcopalians or conservative evangelicals would agree. Why? Because Schlissel has abandoned the Reformed understanding of worship for a conservative Lutheran conception. He openly admits that he believes that human tradition in worship is acceptable...

Schlissel wants us to abandon the regulative principle and adopt his view because he believes his position can better withstand "exegetical attack" and thus will better preserve biblical worship. How will allowing human tradition in worship preserve biblical worship? How can allowing what Jesus and Paul explicitly forbid withstand exegetical attack? We live in a time in which many human innovations are coming into the churches--even "Reformed" ones. The pastors and elders in "Reformed" churches which have puppet shows, sermonettes for children, drama groups, musical groups, dance troupes, liturgical calendars, and unauthorized holy days love these articles by Schlissel. Why? Because his articles justify human autonomy, i.e., human tradition in worship. If one were to talk with a CRC or PCA pastor who practiced such things, one would find essential agreement with Schlissel's arguments. People despise the regulative principle of worship not because it is itself an innovation but because they know it condemns their best-loved human worship inventions. It condemns all will-worship. Schlissel may object to the so-called "celebrative" worship described above. But, according to his own principles, there is really nothing he can do to stop it. For these things are not expressly forbidden by Scripture. (Where is the list of forbidden worship practices in the New Testament?) All that Schlissel can do is argue that such worship is not "majestic" enough, or that is not done decently and in order. The proponents of such worship would of course disagree. They would argue that it is session-controlled, very orderly, and wonderfully "majestic."

The regulative principle of worship (i.e., truly Reformed worship) is the only principle that can withstand all exegetical attacks and stem today's sweeping tide of human worship innovations. It can withstand all exegetical attacks because it is founded upon the sacred Scripture and nothing else. It can stem the tide of human innovation in worship because it cuts off, at the root, all innovation, all human tradition and will-worship. The seeds of will-worship are killed before they can sprout. Humanly originated worship traditions are forbidden at the outset, and are thus not given the opportunity of taking root and displacing that worship which God has instituted. Everything in worship must have a divine warrant; i.e., it must be proved from the word of God. Thornwell writes: "As under the Old Dispensation nothing connected with the worship or discipline of the Church of God was left to the wisdom or discretion of man, but everything was accurately prescribed by the authority of God, so, under the New, no voice is to be heard in the household of faith but the voice of the Son of God. The power of the church is purely ministerial and declarative. She is only to hold forth the doctrine, enforce the laws, and execute the government which Christ has given her. She is to add nothing of her own to, and to subtract nothing from, what her Lord has established. Discretionary power she does not possess." ...Paul says that any addition to what God has commanded or authorized is self-imposed religion, or as the King James Version says, "will worship." The Greek word used by Paul (ethelothreskeia) signifies worship that originates from man's own will. 'This is worship not enjoined by God, but springing out of man's own ingenuity--unauthorized devotion.... The worship referred to is unsolicited and unaccepted. It is superstition..." "The gist is that these ordinances are forms of worship or religious service chosen by man according to the will of man, not means chosen by God. This is the essence of corrupt worship, when men seek to establish their own forms of religious service. We might call it free-will worship, since the advocates of man-made worship are claiming that men possess the right (or freedom) to institute acceptable means to worship God." ...Anyone who advocated Schlissel's views would have been defrocked in any of the Reformed denominations of the past, whether English, Dutch, Scottish, German, French or American.

* SPURGEON QUOTES on CHRISTMAS *

+++ From C.H. Spurgeon's Treasury of David, on Psalm 81:4.

Ver. 4. For this was a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob.

When it can be proved that the observance of Christmas, Whitsuntide, and other Popish festivals was ever instituted by a divine statute, we also will attend to them, but not till then. It is as much our duty to reject the traditions of men, as to observe the ordinances of the Lord. We ask concerning every rite and rubric, "Is this a law of the God of Jacob?" and if it be not clearly so, it is of no authority with us, who walk in Christian liberty.

+++ C.H. Spurgeon (December 24, 1871, http://www.swrb.com/newslett/FREEBOOK/holyday.htm )

We have no superstitious regard for times and seasons. Certainly we do not believe in the present ecclesiastical arrangement called Christmas. First, because we do not believe in the mass at all, but abhor it, whether it be sung in Latin or in English. Secondly, because we find no Scriptural warrant whatever for observing any day as the birthday of the Savior; and consequently, its observance is a superstition, because not of divine authority. Superstition has fixed most positively the day of our Savior's birth, although there is no possibility of discovering when it occurred. ... It was not till the middle of the third century that any part of the Church celebrated the nativity of our Lord; and it was not till very long after the Western Church had set the example, that the Eastern adopted it. ... Probably the fact is that the "holy" days were arranged to fit in with the heathen festivals. We venture to assert, that if there be any day in the year, of which we may be pretty sure that it was not the day on which the Savior was born, it is the 25th of December. ... Regarding not the day, let us, nevertheless, give God thanks for the gift of His dear Son. ... The Catholics and high Church Episcopalians may have their Christmas one day in 365 but we have a Christ gift the entire year.

The Christian Women's Place (1991)
Paints a beautiful picture of the Biblically faithful woman in her role as set forth in Scripture (cf. Titus 2:3-5). Mary Pride's The Way Home: Beyond Feminism Back to Reality
($19.96) and All the Way Home: The Power for Your Family to Be Its Best ($19.96) should also be given careful consideration by all women seeking to be faithful to their Biblical calling.

SCOTT, DAVID

Distinctive Principles of the Reformed Presbyterian Church (1841)

This book is not designed to discuss "the (many-RB) doctrines which the Reformed Presbyterian church holds in common with others," but is written to set forth RP distinctives. It tackles its subject from three major heads: "Social Covenanting;" "The Dominion of Christ;" and "The Universal Application of Scripture (civil as well as religious)." It shows that while these doctrines "are held by many, as abstract doctrines of divine truth, they are not embodied in the testimony of any other Christian denomination: nor made necessary to ministerial or Christian fellowship. Although other individuals may hold these doctrines, it is a 'distinctive' feature of the RPC to embody them in her testimony; and to make them terms of communion." It also explains how these are the same distinctives that were maintained "at the era of the reformation, (when) the covenanted church of Scotland bore a distinguished testimony for all the offices of Christ, as prophet, priest and king: and for the pure doctrines, worship, discipline, and government of the house of God." The author states that "the great object aimed at is to help forward the glorious triumph of the Messiah, so beautifully described in the 72nd Psalm. When 'all Kings shall fall down before him; and all nations shall serve him.'" 325 pages.

SCOT, WILLIAM

Apologetical Narration of the State and Government of the Kirk of Scotland Since the Reformation (1846)
Contains documents, records and historical details not easily found elsewhere (if at all). The preface notes that "this work presents a brief (344 pages--RB) but comprehensive view of the affairs of the Kirk from the Reformation in 1560, till the meeting of Parliament after the arrival of Charles the First in Scotland in 1633... The personal share however which the Author had in many of the later transactions recorded in his work, gives it a degree of value which it might not otherwise have possessed." About half of the book is made up of a second book titled "Certain Record Touching the Estate of the Church in Scotland." "This work is of a much more limited nature than Scot's Narration; but it may be deemed of greater importance, from its exhibiting, in full detail, by one of the leading sufferers, the whole iniquitous proceedings against those Ministers who were present at the meeting of the General Assembly which had been appointed to be held at Aberdeen in July 1605" (Preface, viii). Total page count, including both books bound together, equals 665 pages. Indexed.

SCOUGAL, HENRY

The Life of God in the Soul of Man

Scougal produced a number of works in his brief life while a pastor and professor of divinity at King's. His greatest production is by consensus, The Life Of God In The Soul Of Man, which was originally written to a friend to explain Christianity and give spiritual counsel. This short treatise displays unusual perception and maturity for one so young. In fact, this work was almost universally well-spoken of by the leaders of the Great Awakening, including George Whitefield, who said he never really understood what true religion was till he had digested Scougal's treatise. In addition to his literary productions, Henry Scougal was also noted for his piety and his clear grasp of scripture, aided in turn by his proficiency in Latin, Hebrew, Greek, and some of the cognate oriental languages (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Scougal).

SCRIBNER, BOB (and Pamela Johnston)

The Reformation in Germany and Switzerland (Documents and Commentary)
"Drawing on a wide range of primary and secondary sources, including many
original documents translated here for the first time (into English--RB) from unpublished archival sources, the authors" bring to light many previously hidden aspects of Reformation thought and development. Of special interest to many will be the final sections of the book dealing with Calvin, Geneva, and the second generation of reform. Here we see the seeds of second reformation thought (i.e. the covenanted Reformation) being planted in Calvin's view and actions relative to social covenanting (e.g. those that would not swear a confessional oath to uphold the Reformation were commanded to leave the city), church discipline, purity of worship, civil authority (i.e. establishments), negative civil sanctions (against Servetus and other heretics), social and political tactics of reform, the use of the printing press, and much more. Luther, Zwingli, the Anabaptists, and major Reformation controversies (images, iconoclasm, liturgies, the Lord's supper, etc.) are also all covered. Much new light is shed on these aspects of the Reformation by the ground-breaking translational work of the authors. A very useful book, from Cambridge University Press, for those interested in seeing some of the original documents and writings from the first Reformation (in English for the first time). This book corrects some of the previous misemphases, regarding Reformation history and thought, that have come from those who have only had recourse to previously translated (into English) documents -- as much of Calvin's writing still remains in languages other than English. Eire's War Against the Idols: The Reformation of Worship from Erasmus to Calvin (Cambridge University Press) is a similar book accomplishing much the same service.

Note (Doug) Wilson's absurd comments: "I want to begin by saying that when we first start talking about the objectivity of the covenant and it starts to sink in what we are saying. You mean that you are saying that lesbian Eskimo bishop lady is a Christian? She is not a Buddhist, she is not a Muslim, yes, in the New Testament sense, she is a New Testament Christian" (Doug Wilson, "The Curses of the New Covenant," tape 7, as excerpted from Brian Schwertley's " A Defense of Reformed Orthodoxy Against the Romanizing Doctrines of the New Auburn Theology" below, footnote 24, emphases added).

A Defense of Reformed Orthodoxy Against the Romanizing Doctrines of the New Auburn Theology by Brian Schwertley (OFFSITE)

"At the 2002 Auburn Avenue Pastor's Conference four speakers--John Barach, Doug Wilson, Steve Schlissel and Steve Wilkins -- articulated what they themselves called a new paradigm in theology. These men set forth this new paradigm as an answer to their own perceived problems within Reformed theology as well as the inadequate manner in which they believe Reformed interpreters and theologians have dealt with "problem" passages in Scripture. The main theme of the conference centered on a new way to view the covenant which they referred to as "the objectivity of the covenant." In their lectures a number of traditional, confessional Reformed doctrines were rejected and replaced by the novel ideas of the speakers. Some of the standard Reformed doctrines that were rejected or redefined were: the covenant of works, the distinction between the visible and invisible church, the nature of baptism (especially relating to efficacy), the doctrine of perseverance (we are repeatedly told that real believers can fall away), the doctrine of the atonement (the speakers repeatedly separate the ground of salvation from its application in an Arminian manner), justification (sometimes faith is defined in a Romish manner as an obedient or working faith [the Norman Shepherd heresy], at other times perseverance is defined in a manner that makes it either a partial ground of salvation or co-instrument in justification), and assurance (The main answer to problems of assurance [we are told] is baptismal regeneration: "Look to your baptism because you were really saved and united to Christ in your baptism.") Because the new paradigm set forth by the Auburn theologians is a radical departure from the Reformed faith and is heretical in many areas, we will briefly examine some of the most perverse areas of their teaching. Not every area will be considered, for that would require a book-length response. Further, some areas such as justification have already been discussed at length. (For example, many excellent articles have been written refuting Norman Shepherd's heretical view of justification. As far as this author can tell the Auburn doctrine of justification is essentially the same as Shepherd's. In fact, Shepherd was originally scheduled to speak at the Auburn conference but was replaced by John Barach because he could not attend.) Therefore, this author will not spend time analyzing their view of this topic. One area that will receive a great deal of attention is the Reformed doctrine of the atonement. The Auburn teaching is a repudiation of the classic Reformed formulation of this doctrine. It is our hope and prayer that this brief analysis of their perverse doctrines will inoculate Reformed believers against the Romanizing paradigm of the Auburn four… Reformed believers need to be made aware that the Auburn paradigm is a radical departure from the Reformed faith. It is not a refining of Reformed doctrine but rather a rejection of confessional orthodoxy in favor of sacramentalist, Arminian and Romanizing concepts. It is heretical because it strikes at the very heart of Reformed theology--the doctrines of the atonement and justification by faith alone. May God protect his precious church from this vile theological poison," writes Brian Schwertley.

NEW BOOK:

Schwertley, Brian M.

Auburn Avenue Theology: A Biblical Analysis. (Covenanted Reformation Press, 255 pages).

Conservative Reformed churches have witnessed a raging controversy since 2002, due to the advocacy of a new theological paradigm referred to as the "Auburn Avenue theology" and the "federal vision." In this book, Rev. Brian M. Schwertley critiques this new movement, analyzing its views on the doctrines of atonement, justification, ecclesiology, baptism, perseverance, and assurance. He also gives a defense of the active obedience of Christ in the justification of sinners, and an appendix warning against false teachers.

The Secret Instructions

of the Jesuits (1824 edition, Latin & English texts included)

A shocking little book that exposes the black Pope (the Jesuit General) and his murdermen, as the following sample quotation from this book exhibits,

I furthermore promise and declare that I will, when opportunity present, make and wage relentless war, secretly or openly, against all heretics, Protestants and Liberals, as I am directed to do, to extirpate and exterminate them from the face of the whole earth; and that I will spare neither age, sex or condition; and that I will hang, waste, boil, flay, strangle and bury alive these infamous heretics, rip up the stomachs and wombs of their women and crush their infants' heads against the walls, in order to annihilate forever their execrable race. That when the same cannot be done openly, I will secretly use the poisoned cup, the strangulating cord, the steel of the poniard or the leaden bullet, regardless of the honor, rank, dignity, or authority of the person or persons, whatever may be their condition in life, either public or private, as I at any time may be directed so to do by any agent of the Pope or Superior of the Brotherhood of the Holy Faith, of the Society of Jesus (from the JESUIT OATH).

The principal distinction seems to be, that the Jesuits are a select body of men singled out and associated for the purpose of carrying into constant and vigorous operation all those encroaching and dangerous principles which the heads and leaders of Popery have always supported, but which they cannot safely call upon the great body of their adherents publicly to profess and make the rule of their conduct...

We next observe, that the operation of interest, one of the most powerful motives, is seconded by another very peculiar incitement, that of religious intolerance. All Protestants being declared objects of abhorrence -- whose destruction is certain, except they are reclaimed by the Catholic Church, and whose extermination is a most sacred duty, whenever and wherever, it can be safely attempted (Preface).

First "printed in England in the year 1658, with a statement, which has never been met by the lease attempt at refutation,--that it was discovered among the Archives of the Jesuit's College at Paderborn in Westphalia, when Christian, Duke of Brunswick, took possession of that place, and gave their library to the Capuchins. Dr. Compton, the acute and learned Bishop of London... published an English translation in 1669. In Germany, also, in France, and in Holland, as well as in England, have successive editions appeared..." (Preface).

This edition includes the Latin and English texts side by side. Its 17 chapters include, "How to induce rich widows to be liberal to the Society," "How to pick out young men and to retain them," "How to feign a contempt of riches" and 14 more. Also included are 12 appendices. 132 pages.

SESSION-BOOK OF THE PARISH OF PENNINGHAME

Accounts of Suffering for Christ and His Covenanted Reformation -- Under Erastian Prelacy in Scotland -- Especially From 1679 to 1689 (1826)
Contains numerous accounts of suffering and martyrdom brought about by the Prelates and Royalists: who conspired together to destroy the people of God who refused to conform to Prelacy, adopt false worship or abjure the covenants. Here is a sample of one historical account taken from this book: "Upon the Eleventh day of May 1685, These two Women, Margaret M'Lachland, and Margaret Wilson, were brought forth to Execution. They did put the old Woman first into the water, and when the Water was overflowing her, they asked Margaret Wilson, what she thought of her in that case, She answered, 'What do I see but Christ wrestling there; think ye that we are the suffers? No, it is Christ in us, for he sends none a warfare on their own charges.' Margaret Wilson sang Psalm 25, from the 7th verse, Read, the 8th Chapter of the Epistle to the Romans, and did pray, and then the water covered her. But before her breath was quite gone, they pulled her up and held her till she could speak, and then asked her if she would pray for the King; She answered, that she wished the salvation of all men, but the Damnation of none. Some of her relations being on the place, cried out she is willing to conform, being desirous to save her life at any rate. Upon which Major Winram offered the oath of abjuration to her, either to swear it or to return to the Water. She refused it, saying, 'I will not, I am one of Christ's children, let me go;' and then they returned her into the Water, where she finished her warfare, being a Virgin Martyr of Eighteen years of age, suffering death for her refusing to swear the oath of abjuration, and hear the Curates" (p. 11). It is instructive to note, as Johnston points out (Treasury of the Scottish Covenant
, p. 123), that in the Oath of Abjuration "the (National--RB) Covenant, and Solemn League and Covenant were to be abjured as unlawful oaths." Thus we see that these courageous woman died for Christ because they would not renounce His covenanted cause -- by renouncing His covenants -- or practice the sin of occasional hearing -- by hearing ministers that that had renounced the covenanted testimony. There are many such lessons in this book for our day. 15 pages.

SHAW, J.W.

Hephzibah Beulah. Our Covenants the National and Solemn League; and Covenanting by the Reformed Presbyterian Synod in America: Considered (1872)

A very useful easy-to-read introductory work to the topics it deals with. General Scriptural principles upon which this book is based are:

1. Departure from former laudable attainments, is a great evil, severely threatened in the Holy Scriptures; and that for which every one, who is guilty, must be accountable to the Righteous Judge of all the earth.

2. They who consent unto the unrighteous deeds of others, are chargeable with guilt, as well as the principal actors.

3. Societies, or individuals, having once publicly and solemnly vowed unto the Most High God; and still, after the strictest enquiry, remain satisfied in their own mind, that their vows were scriptural; should seriously endeavor to act up to the true spirit and intention of these vows; and no power upon earth, nor any class of men, whether majority or minority, in a nation, can ever possibly dissolve the obligation.

Chapters include: The National Covenant and Solemn League and Covenant reviewed; Their Binding Obligations Shown; The Possibility That Adherence to them May Be Professed, While They are Virtually Abandoned; The Covenant Sworn and Subscribed by Synod at Pittsburgh, May 27th, 1871; Is It a Renovation or a New Covenant?; The Covenant Does Not Contain All That the Church is Bound to in America; Charges Against the Covenant; Reason Why Some Who Do Not Like It, Swear It; The Covenants National and Solemn League Must Be Maintained." 78 pages.

SHAW, ROBERT

An Exposition of the Confession of Faith of the Westminster Assembly of Divines (1845)

"All that learning the most profound and extensive, intellect the most acute and searching, and piety the most sincere and earnest, could accomplish, was thus concentrated in the Westminster Assembly's Confession of Faith, which may be safely termed the most perfect statement of Systematic Theology ever framed by the Christian Church," writes William Hetherington in The History of the Westminster Assembly of Divines. The Westminster Confession of Faith (WCF) is without a doubt the greatest human confession ever written, "being the chiefest part of that uniformity in religion, which by the Solemn League and Covenant" bound the British Isles (and all his majesty's dominions) to obedience to the Word of God.

Shaw's Exposition is the standard work on the WCF, for he admittedly states "that he has not found it necessary to differ from the compilers of the Confession in any one point of doctrine" (though this is a bit of an overstatement). This edition includes an introductory essay by Hetherington defending the use of Confessions in general and the WCF in particular. Hetherington also gives a brief outline of the historical context of the period in which the WCF was composed while demonstrating the harmonious nature of the Reformational Creeds and Confessions.

SHEDD, WILLIAM.G.T.

The Doctrine of Endless Punishment
In this work, Shedd carefully expounds the biblical teaching on divine judgment, and sets it in the context of the history of Christian doctrine. He deals carefully and cogently with objections to it. Shedd shows that "the strongest support of the doctrine of endless punishment is the teaching of Christ, the Redeemer of man... without the explicit and reiterated statements of God incarnate, it is doubtful whether so awful a truth would have had such a conspicuous place as it always has had in the creed of Christendom... Christ could not have warned men so frequently and earnestly as he did... had he known there is no future peril..." This book will have a profoundly sobering effect on its readers; but its lasting impression will be to cause a new concern for men and women without Christ, and undying gratitude for "Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath to come" (dust jacket).

Closing up the labors of forty years of theological research and meditation, Shedd steps forth as a major proponent of the Augustinio-Calvinistic system of thought. Drawing heavily from citations in works of the Ancient, Mediaeval and Reformation periods, and from the English and Continental divines of the 16th and 17th century, Shedd's work is unsurpassed in many respects. He thoroughly and comprehensively deals with all the major areas of theology, including the doctrine of God, Anthropology, Christology, and Eschatology. Also contains a very useful theological introduction and bibliography.

SHEDD, WILLIAM G.T.

A History of Christian Doctrine (2 Vol., 1865)

Long out of print and still much sought after. Over 900 pages, Shedd notes that his work "pays more attention to the orthodox than to the latitudinarian drift of thought." Also that "[i]t is impossible for any one author to compose an encyclopaedic history. Every work of this kind must be stronger in some directions, than in others." With this in mind he continues, writing, "I have felt a profound interest in the Nicene Trinitarianism, the Augustinian anthropology, and the Anselmic soteriology, and from these centres have taken my departures." Major sections deal with the history of philosophy, apologetics, Trinitarianism, Christology, anthropology, soteriology, eschatology and symbols (i.e confessions: including those from the Lutheran, Reformed, Papal, Greek, Arminian and Socinian systems of thought). A very important set of books!

Homiletics and Pastoral Theology (1867)

This book is based on Shedd's lectures, during the years 1852 and 1853, while he was Professor of Sacred Rhetoric and Pastoral Theology at Auburn Theological Seminary. SHEDD, WILLIAM G.T.

Orthodoxy and Heterodoxy (1893)
Composed of numerous articles relating "to principles in theology and ethics which are eternal, and vehemently opposed in the standing conflict between orthodoxy and heterodoxy." Shedd notes that in this war "[t]here is nothing new in the orthodoxy of today; and nothing new in the newest heterodoxy. A scholar vested in ancient learning can trace both alike in the antagonisms of the past. Speaking generally, the orthodox respects and cultivates systematic theology; the heterodox contemns and vilifies it. The former maintains the carefully stated creeds of the evangelical denominations; the latter seeks to revise, relax, and nullify them. Orthodoxy defines Christianity to be an exclusive religion, distinct from all others, and intended to convert them; heterodoxy explains it to be a conglomerate of all religions, and destined to be merged and lost in them." This volume is a polemic by a master wordsmith, defending the historic faith -- exhorting "the really orthodox in all denominations, to preserve their historic creeds, and maintain their ancient discipline".

Romans (1879)

Written for advanced exegetical study and to promote the critical and doctrinal study of this important portion of the NT, the author states that it is specifically intended for theological students and elders. For this reason, the Greek text is printed at the top of the page and used as the basis of exegesis throughout. 450 pages.

Sermons To The Natural Man
In the words of
A.A. Hodge: "Dr. Shedd's 'Sermons to the Natural Man' are, if not absolutely the best, yet of the very best doctrinal and spiritual sermons produced in this generation. We have known much of their power in convincing sinners, and in deepening, widening and exalting the experience of true Christians... He grasps the very heart and soul of the truth. He holds it in its entirety with uncompromising loyalty; he states it with wonderful clearness and accuracy, and illustrates and applies it with singular facility and grace of style."

Sermons To The Spiritual Man
This 420 page volume contains 26 sermons, and in the words of the author: "This volume is complementary to another, published in 1871, under the title of 'Sermons to the Natural Man.' In the earlier volume, the author aimed to address the human conscience. In this, he would speak to the Christian heart. The former supposed original and unpardoned sin, and endeavored to produce the consciousness of it. The latter supposes forgiven and indwelling sin, and would aid in the struggle and victory over it."

SHIELDS, ALEXANDER

A Hind Let Loose or An Historical Representation of the Testimonies of the Church of Scotland for the Interest of Christ with the True State thereof in all its Periods. Together with a Vindication of the Present Testimony Against Popish, Prelatical, and Malignant Enemies of that Church, as it is now Stated, for the Prerogatives of Christ, Privileges of the Church, and Liberties of Mankind; and Sealed by the Sufferings of a Reproached Remnant of Presbyterians there, Witnessing Against the Corruptions of the Time: Wherein Several Controversies of Greatest Consequence are Enquired into, and in Some Measure Cleared; Concerning Hearing of the Curates, Owning of the Present Tyranny, Taking of Ensnaring Oaths and Bonds, Frequenting of Field-Meetings, Defensive Resistance of Tyrannical Violence, with Several Other Subordinate Questions Useful for these Times (1687, 1797 edition)

First printed in 1687, we have used the 1797 edition for this rare bound photocopy edition because all of the Latin has been translated into English (a major improvement for English readers). This rare Covenanter classic, concerning Calvinistic political philosophy and tactics of civil resistance, is comparable to Samuel Rutherford's Lex, Rex; in fact it could rightly be referred to as "Lex Rex volume two." It is solidly in the line of John Knox's teachings on civil disobedience and addresses numerous topics that are relevant to today's Christian.

"In A Hind Let Loose, Shields justified the Camerionian resistance to royal absolutism and the divine right of kings. He argued that government is divinely ordained, but the people are entitled to bring a king to judgement for wrongdoing. Parliament is commissioned by the people to oversee the nation's affairs, but the compact between the people and their rulers does not entail a forfeiture of the people's power to depose tyrants and confer authority on someone else. Government is by consent, and must justify itself to the consciences of the people. God has given men the right of self defence, and this extends to a a right not only passively to resist, but also to kill relentless persecutors" writes Isbell (in the Dictionary of Scottish Church History and Theology, p. 773).

Controversial chapter titles include: "Concerning Owning of Tyrants Authority;" "Defensive Arms Vindicated;" "Of Extraordinary Execution of Judgement by Private Men;" and "Refusing to Pay Wicked Taxation Vindicated."

This book sets forth the Crown rights of King Jesus, against all usurpers in both church and state, giving a history of some of the faithful sufferings endured by the elect, in maintaining this truth.

It bears testimony against "the popish, prelatical and malignant enemies" of Christ and proclaims the only true basis of liberty for mankind.

"The matter is argued with a vast abundance of Biblical illustration, and with much reference to Reformation and Puritan divines. It should be consulted, if practicable, by all who wish fully to understand the inner spirit of the Covenanting Movement," writes Purves in Fair Sunshine (p. 202).

Isbell, interestingly, notes that Shields was once "amanuensis to the English Puritan John Owen."

SHIELDS, ALEXANDER

The Life and Death of that Eminently Pious, Free, and Faithful Minister and Martyr of Jesus Christ, Mr. James Renwick: With a Vindication of the Heads of His Dying Testimony (1806, second edition)
"Let all who desire to be truly informed of the beginning, rise, height, and length of the tyranny of that 28 years' persecution read the sufferings and grievances of Presbyterians, especially those of them nick-named Cameronians, written by the famous Mr. Shields" (Walker, Biographia Presbyteriana
, Vol. 1, p. 123). This book contains "an account of Renwick's examinations and imprisonments at London; his being sent down to Scotland; his examinations before the privy council, justiciary, Lords of the Articles, etc.; his disputations with the Bishops and others: with large and pertinent observations and reflections upon all the material passages of these trials, examination and disputations. Together with a large and elaborate defence of the doctrine of resistance, or defensive arms, of the Apologetical Declaration and other heads of suffering; as likewise a clear and full confutation of the oath of Abjuration" (Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 372). This edition also contains "The Manner of Admission, or Ordaining of Ruling Elders" by Renwick and a "few of his many religious letters." Alexander Shields was Renwick's "colleague and companion in tribulation, who had access to know what he relates, either from his own mouth, whose life he writes, or others of undoubted credit, and was eye and ear witness to much thereof, being in the same circumstances, displaying the same banner of the gospel, and bearing witness to the same truths and testimony of Jesus, which the other sealed with his dearest blood" ("Epistle to the Reader," p. 3). 224 pages.

SHIELDS, ALEXANDER

A True and Faithful Relation of the Sufferings of the Reverend and Learned, Mr. Alexander Shields, Minister of the Gospel (1715)
The title continues: "Written with his own hand. Containing an Account of his Examinations and Imprisonment at London; His being sent down to Scotland; His Examinations before the Privy Council, Justiciary, Lords of the Articles, etc. His Disputations with the Bishops, and others: With large and Pertinent Observations and Reflections upon all the Material Passages of these Trials, Examinations and Disputations. Together with a large and Elaborate Defence of the Doctrine of Resistance, of Defensive Arms, of the Apologetical Declaration, and other Heads of Suffering. As Likewise a clear and full Confutation of the Oath of Abjuration." We concur with Patrick Walker (Biog. Presb., I., p. 123) when he writes,
"Let all who desire to be truly informed of the beginning, rise, height, and length of the tyranny of that 28 years' persecution read the sufferings and grievances of Presbyterians, especially those of them nick-named Cameronians, written by the famous Mr. Shields" (cited the Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 372). SIBBES, RICHARD

The Bruised Reed (1630, 1998)

"'Our books may come to be seen where ourselves shall never be heard. These may preach where the author cannot, and (which is more) when he is not." This prediction by one of the great Puritans has had many fulfillments. An ungodly Welsh clergyman, shopping at a fair in the eighteenth century, bought an article which happened to be wrapped in a page torn from an old Puritan folio. The reading of that one page led to his sound conversion. As Luther said, 'Satan hates the use of pens,' and never were pens more powerfully wielded in the cause of God than by the Puritan divines of the seventeenth century. Nor have their books outlived their usefulness. Although the original volumes are worn with age, the truths found in them are as fresh as the new formats in which they are now appearing. There is no better introduction to the Puritans than the writings of Richard Sibbes, who is, in many ways a typical Puritan. 'Sibbes never wastes the student's time,' wrote C.H. Sprugeon, 'he scatters pearls and diamonds with both hands.' ... Since its first publication in 1630, The Bruised Reed has been remarkably fruitful as a source of spiritual help and comfort. Richard Baxter records: ' A poor pedlar came to the door... and my father bought of him Sibb's Bruised Reed... It suited my state... and gave me a livelier apprehension of the mystery of redemption and how much I was beholden to Jesus Christ... Without any means but books was God pleased to resolve me to himself.' Such testimonies could be multiplied.

Speaking of the preacher's need to suit his reading to the varying conditions he finds within, Dr. Martyn Llyod-Jones says in his Preaching and Preachers:

You will find, I think, in general that the Puritans are almost invariably helpful... I shall never cease to be grateful to one of them called Richard Sibbes who was balm to my soul at a period in my life when I was overworked and badly overtired, and therefore subject in an unusual manner to the onslaughts of the devil. In that state and condition... what you need is some gently, tender treatment for your soul. I found at that time that Richard Sibbes, who was known in London in the early seventeenth century as 'the heavenly Doctor Sibbes', was an unfailing remedy. His books The Bruised Reed and The Soul's Conflict quieted, soothed, comforted, encouraged and healed me.

This is one of the best Puritan books to read if you are feeling down or depressed or if you are facing struggles and trials. It is also very useful if you are struggling with assurance. Great encouragement for Christians here!

Some of the language and punctuation of the earlier edition have been modernized and headings have been introduced with the intention of making the work more accessible to present-day readers" (from the "Publishers' Foreword", January, 1998). This is one of titles in the "Puritan Paperbacks" series from Banner of Truth.

SIBBS, RICHARD

The Faithful Covenanter (1639)
An amazing sermon opening the narrow road of faithful covenanting -- as seen first and foremost in the Lord Jesus Christ, our perfect covenant keeper! Expounds on the four periods of time relating to the renewing of the covenant of grace in history. Shows that "whatsoever we give the supremacy of the inward man to, whatsoever we love most, whatsoever we trust most, whatsoever we fear most, whatsoever we joy and delight in most, whatsoever we obey most -- that is our God." Applies this to the first commandment, as a part of the law of the covenant, and works out the implications (which involve numerous areas). Goes on to give Scriptural marks whereby covenant keepers can be distinguished from covenant breakers and connects the everlasting covenant with the sacraments and their meaning. A meaty meal, recommended for those who are willing to advance theologically and practically.

SIMPSON, ROBERT

MARTYRLAND: Perils of the Persecution: A Tale of the Days of the Scottish Covenanters

"Over 18,000 saints of God had been martyred before the ascension of William III to the throne of England in 1688 and the subsequent 'Glorious Revolution' which brought an end to the terrible persecutions in Scotland...There are many historical records and accounts of the exploits of the Covenanters, but 'Martyrland' stands in a league all of its own. If you would like to be transported in your imagination back to the 17th Century and enabled to vividly hear, and see, and smell, and feel all that went on, then this book is going to capture your mind in a way that you will not easily forget! One piece of friendly advice: Don't let your Spouse know of this book until AFTER you have read it. I made that mistake, and for a few weeks my wife and I were racing to be first in bed so as to get first dabs on what still remains our favorite historical narrative!" (Robert Elliott).

At the recommendation of Robert Elliott the publisher acquired a copy of this book. Night after night I found myself rising in the middle of the night wanting to read more of this precious book. It is good for the soul to read such accounts of the persecuted brethren of the past. It is a book you will want to read again and again.

Traditions of the Covenanters
The design of this collection is to preserve the memory of good men in the inferior ranks of society, whose worth and whose sufferings have not hitherto been recorded. Their names, though those of plain unlettered men, do not deserve to perish; and their posterity may, by contemplating the virtues of their ancestors, be stimulated to emulate their godliness. 504 pages.

Men of the Covenant
"A great book dealing with one of the most inspiring periods of Church history," said Dr. C. Gregg Singer. Brilliant sketches of Covenanter history addressed to ordinary readers who do not have the opportunity or leisure for protracted personal studies in this area. A testimony to, as Smellie notes, "the dogged fighters for freedom in Church and State." The great sufferings these Christians endured gave them a seriousness about the faith, and a "vision" of the truth, which has been unequaled since -- stirring reading! 534 pages.

SMEATON, GEORGE

The Scottish Theory of Ecclesiastical Establishments (1875)
Smeaton notes, "I have often said that in the Scottish theory we have the ultimate truth on the whole subject of the relations between Church and State, the result of the prayerful investigations and earnest contendings of some of the clearest minds and loftiest characters that adorned the Christian Church during the last three centuries." This is one of the best short treatments of this subject to be found anywhere. It provides key definitions and should help to clear up many misunderstandings, from both the antiestablishmentarians and those Anglican and Continental theories of "State Churches" which have falsely saddled this liberating and God-honoring truth with odiousness to some. In short, Smeaton argues, "It will be necessary, before proceeding farther, to lay down some positions of a more general nature as they are pre-supposed or come to light in every instance of Church Establishment. I shall do little more than state them as fundamental postulates, and I may the sooner come to what is more peculiarly Scottish. The propriety of Ecclesiastical Establishments may be advocated briefly as follows:óThe State, considered in its corporate character, is a MORAL PERSON, with a moral standing and responsibility. It is not the creation of the so-called social compact or of the popular will, but a divine institution based on natural religion. It coheres by a moral and religious bond; and its rulers are the lieutenants of God. If the State is a moral person, capable of performing duty, of committing sin, and suffering punishment, which everyone must own who traces the fate of nations according to the divine word, it follows that a nation, acting by its rulers, can accept Christianity and make a public profession of it as the national rule and guide. It had been held together previous to the recognition of Christianity by some form of religion however impure, without which it could not have existed. And the first duty of the civil ruler when brought in contact with Christianity and persuaded of its divine origin is to RECEIVE THE BIBLE AS A REVELATION in a national way. The immediate effect of this is that it constitutes the State a Christian State, and pledges it to purge out its previous religion in the same way as Pagan and Mahommedan nations constituted themselves, according to their false religions, or as the atheistic state was constituted, or rather attempted to be constituted, by the French Convention. A nation must have a religion, and the only question is, which it will adopt. And when Christianity comes to the nation, or to the family, it does not frown on either of these institutions, which also are divine in origin, but enters into them with an elevating purifying power, and sweetly coalesces with all that is purely human in both. These ordinances of God now became vessels by which Christianity is diffused. The national recognition of the Bible as a revelation subjecting the nation to its authority, though a great step gained, does not exhaust the nation's duty, as widely diverging views prevail upon the right interpretation of the Bible. The State must by the necessity of the case ADOPT A CREED which will commonly be prepared by the Church. The same duty that devolves upon an individual Christian confronts a Christian State, and it naturally appends the civil sanction to the Church's creed. It must distinguish between scripture truth and its perversion. The State, by the adoption of a creed, gives utterance to the self-consciousness of a Christian community. It confesses the Christianity it has adopted."-- From pp. 4-5. A splendid and much-needed work in our day!

A clear and concise summary of the biblical doctrine of the moral person (i.e. that God regards churches and nations as moral entities separate from the individual members of which they are composed). No Christian can afford not to understand this vital teaching! In many ways this is a crux of the Covenanter position, underlying as it does the issues of separation from backslidden or anti-Christian civil and church governments, the binding nature of lawful Covenants on posterity, eschatology, etc.

SMITH, B.M.

Family Religion, or the Domestic Relations as Regulated by Christian Principles (1859)

Smith's family was greatly influenced by Samuel Davies. Smith himself was a friend of R.L. Dabney. As the editor notes, the importance of this book is seen in the fact that "[r]eform of the family would soon diffuse itself throughout the whole constitution of society, a higher tone of morals would be inspired, and not only would the moral influence of the church be enlarged, but the stability and security of the state would be perpetuated." Or as the "Directory for Family Worship," appended to the Westminster Confession, so wisely points out, "[b]esides the public worship in congregations, mercifully established in this land in great purity, it is expedient and necessary that secret worship of each person alone, and private worship of families, be pressed and set up; that, with national reformation, the profession and power of godliness, both personal and domestic, be advanced." This was a prize winning essay, covering, in depth, the family and its duties. 210 pages.

SMITH, THOMAS

Select Memoirs of the Lives, Labours, and Sufferings, of Those Pious and Learned English and Scottish Divines, Who Greatly Distinguished Themselves in Promoting the Reformation from Popery; In Translating the Bible; and in Promulgating Its Salutary Doctrines by Their Numerous Evangelical Writings; and Who Ultimately Crowned the Venerable Edifice with the Celebrated Westminster Confession of Faith, etc. etc. etc. (1828)

"The Work with the lives of those renowned English Worthies, who introduced and effected the glorious Reformation from popery, and concludes with those, who, unsatisfied with the splendid ceremonial and Romish peculiarities of the church of England, could not conscientiously conform to her superstitious ritual, and were therefore denominated Non-conformists or Puritans. The Reformation of the church of Christ was the sole object of both, their opinions were the same, and it will be difficult to determine who suffered most, or acted the better part. The same reasons that induced the former to labour for the Reformation from Popery induced the latter to exert themselves for the Reformation of the church of England. Their labours, their influence, and their zeal, were devoted to this desirable work, and notwithstanding that they endeavoured, by the most peaceable means, to purge the church, of which they were members, from all its antchristian impurities, they were branded with the name puritans, and many of them, for their non-conformity, suffered suspension, imprisonment, and persecution even unto death. The Work will therefore furnish the reader with a circumstantial account of the arduous conflict of religious liberty, from the days of John Wickliffe. Here he will find some of the merciless proceedings of the court of High Commission and the Star-Chamber, two terrible engine's of cruelty and injustice, whose unparalleled oppressions, and unprecedented barbarities, in place of reconciling men to the unity of the established religion, drove them farther and farther off, confirmed them in their non-conformity, alienated their minds from the prelatical priesthood, and greatly increased their own number and reputation. In a Work of this nature, it appeared necessary to give the reader some account of the errors, encroachments, and corruptions of the Romish church, that led to the long and arduous struggle before us. This he will find in the Historical Sketch of the Christian Church (From the Ascension of Christ -- RB), with which the Memoirs are introduced." (Preface, pp. vii-viii).

Also included is a "Short Introduction to the Lives of the Puritans." This is a major historical work, both for scope and accuracy. It covers the lives of 132 principal Reformers; among them: Ames, Baille, Baxter, Bolton, Bradford, the Burgess' (both Anthony and Cornelius), Case, Cawdrey, Coverdale, Cotton, Fox, Gillespie, Goodman, Goodwin, Henderson, Hooker, Hooper, Janeway, Latimer, Lightfoot, Ridley, Rogers, Rutherford, Sibbs, Tyndale, Vines, and a host of others. For the book-lover, researcher and student (of the historical and doctrinal struggle for Reformation), a convenient and helpful list of books by each author covered is appended to the end of each memoir. 724 pages.

SPENCER, DUANE

TULIP: The Five Points of Calvinism
TULIP is the popular acronym for the five points of Calvinism, total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace, and perseverance. These five points are not only concisely explained in the light of the Bible but are also helpfully contrasted to the corresponding five points of Arminianism, which originally prompted the Calvinistic five point statement at Dort. Concluding the book are brief charts summarizing the differences between Calvinistic and Arminian beliefs (back cover). A great introductory look at this topic.

The Holiness of God (video)

Change Your Life with R.C. Sproul's (Ligonier's) Flagship Series

"Christians long for changed lives. We want to grow closer to God. We want to know Him better and to be more like His Son. We want our life in this world to be more like what it will be in the world to come. The Holiness of God, Ligonier's most popular and enduring series, can help. Literally thousands of people have testified to the transforming encounter with God through this series. With both passion and erudition, R.C. Sproul takes us on a six-part journey through the Bible and history to teach us about the God who made heaven and earth. Through a study of the prophet Isaiah's encounter with God, R.C. defines what holiness is. Through the experience of Martin Luther, R.C. shows that knowing God's holiness spawns incredible courage in the face of difficult circumstances. Contemplating God's holy justice, R.C. shows why human beings always respond in fear in the direct presence of God. And R.C. reminds us that as we grow in the knowledge of God, we begin to love His holiness. And we begin to act more like His Son. Don't miss what thousands of believers have experienced. Discover a fresh sense of God's awesomeness -- and a renewed appreciation for His grace -- as you experience The Holiness of God. Includes six messages: 'The Importance of Holiness'; 'The Trauma of Holiness'; 'Holiness and Justice'; 'The Insanity of Luther'; 'The Meaning of Holiness'; 'The Holiness of God'" (Ligonier catalogue, emphases added).

+++ C.H. Spurgeon (December 24, 1871, http://www.swrb.com/newslett/FREEBOOK/holyday.htm )

SPURGEON, CHARLES HADDON

Grace Triumphant
The great preacher, Charles Spurgeon, extolled the free grace of God as much as anyone who has ever filled a pulpit. These sermons (of 320 pages) on that grand theme are representative of the work he loved so much, and in which he exhibited such supreme gifts -- the direct appeal to the hearts and consciences of his hearers, the close application of Scripture promises, teaching, and rebuke to the habits and practices of their daily lives. Spurgeon, known in his day as 'The Prince of Preachers,' here proclaims the grandest of virtures of 'The King of Kings.' These sermons were unavailable until they appeared in the Metropolitan Tabernacle volumes from 1904-1911. Contains 15 sermons on the grace and mercy of God:

The Novelties of Divine Mercy (Lamentations 3:22-23)
The Tenderness of God's Comfort (Isaiah 64:13)
Cheer for Despondency (Proverbs 27:1)
Christ Looseth from Infirmities (Luke 13:11-13)
Mercy for the Meanest of the Flock (Micah 4:6)
Secret Disciples Encouraged (John 18:25)
Bleesings Traced to their Source (Psalm 87:7)
The Places where God Blesses (Genesis 32:29)
Christ Seen as God's Salvation (Luke 2:30)
The Hope that Purifies (1 John 3:3)
A Painful and Puzzling Question (Mark 4:40)
Unreasonable Reasons (Matthew 14:31)
Faith Hand in Hand with Fear (Psalm 61:3)
Faith's Way of Approach (Romans 10:17)
Faith Tried and Triumphing (Job 13:15)

Lectures To My Students
Spurgeon realized that he could influence the church beyond his own lifetime if he could encourage future pastors to trust the Bible, love people, and preach the truth fearlessly. To achieve this he collected his lectures to his college students and published this book. It has been a classic of pastoral theology ever since and is still used to train ministers to this day (back cover).

SPURGEON, CHARLES H.

Spurgeon's Sovereign Grace Sermons

It is no novelty, then, that I am preaching; no new doctrine. I love to proclaim these strong old doctrines, that are called by nickname Calvinism, but which are surely and verily the revealed truth of God as it is in Christ Jesus. By this truth I make a pilgrimage into the past, and as I go, I see father after father, confessor after confessor, martyr after martyr, standing up to shake hands with me. Were I a Pelagian, or a believer in the doctrine of free-will, I should have to walk for centuries all alone. Here and there a heretic, of no very honorable character, might rise up and call me brother. But taking these things to be the standard of my faith, I see the land of the ancients peopled with my brethren; I behold multitudes who confess the same as I do, and acknowledge that this is the religion of God's own church. (Spurgeon from the sermon "Election" [$.97, separate booklet "Election"]).

I have my own private opinion that there is no such thing as preaching Christ and Him crucified, unless we preach what is nowadays called Calvinism. It is a nick name to call it Calvinism; Calvinism is the Gospel, and nothing else. I do not believe we can preach the gospel... unless we preach the sovereignty of God in His dispensation of grace... unless we exalt the electing, unchangeable, eternal, immutable, conquering love of Jehovah; nor do I think we can preach the gospel unless we base it upon the special and particular redemption of His elect and chosen people which Christ wrought out upon the cross; nor can I comprehend a gospel which lets saints fall away after they are called." (Spurgeon from his sermon "Christ Crucified" [$.97, separate booklet "Christ Crucified"]).

Completely retypeset and unedited, this book (of 188 pages) contains ten stirring Spurgeon sermons focusing on the sovereignty of God, the five points of Calvinism and triumph of Christ as King.

Sermons included are:

1. God's Will and Man's Will

2. High Doctrine

3. The Sure Triumph of the Crucified One

4. The Perpetuity of the Law of God

5. The Unconquerable King

6. Human Inability

7. Christ's Work No Failure

8. Christ Crucified

9. The Doctrines of Grace Do Not Lead to Sin

10. Election.

SPURGEON, CHARLES H.

The Charles Spurgeon Collection on one CD (Version 2.0)

Version 2 of this mammoth collection now incudes "The Treasury of David". Originally a 6 volume set, this work remains as one of history's greatest expositions on the book of Psalms. With a most thorough approach, Spurgeon dissects every verse of every Psalm. Besides Spurgeon's sermons, "The Treasury of the David" remains probably the most important and appreciated work compiled by this great Christian author.

Also included in electronic format for the first time on Version 2, is the "Exposition Index" which lists and links all of the many expositions that were used to close Spurgeon's sermons.

Like version 1.0, version 2.0 contains the entire 63 Volumes of the Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit, and over 70 of Spurgeon's books, writings and other publications. Enjoy and learn from Sermons on Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21

SPURSTOWE, WILLIAM

The Wells of Salvation Opened: Or, A Treatise Discovering the Nature, Preciousness, Usefulness of Gospel Promises, and Rules for the Right Application of Them (1655, 2001)

"The Wells of Salvation... may well be the best book ever written on God's promises" (Joel Beeke in his foreword to the 2001 edition).

When we asked Dr. Joel Beeke (one of the most respected authorities on Puritan literature in our day) which classic Reformation books he would most like to see in print again, we received a reply noting only one book -- and Spurstowe's The Wells of Salvation was the book! Given Dr. Beeke's extensive knowledge of Puritan and Reformed literature (and the size of his own library) such a response is one of the highest recommendations imaginable, in our opinion. Moreover, after finding out that we had obtained a copy of this exceedingly rare classic (of 313 pages), written by one of the Westminster Divines, Dr. Beeke graciously wrote a new foreword for the 2001 SWRB edition. In this new foreword he writes,

Spurstowe was one of the five divines who wrote tracts against Episcopal church government in 1641 under the name Smectymnuus, the last three letters of this word forming his initials (VVS)... During his years with the (Westminster--RB) Assembly, Spurstowe preached before Parliament on four occasions... Spurstowe, called a "grand Presbyterian" by his contemporaries, sat on the committee to consider the reasons given by the Independents for their views of church government... He served as Master of St. Catherine's College, Cambridge, but was deprived of that role in 1650 for refusing allegiance to the existing government.

Richard Baxter describes Spurstowe as "an ancient, calm, reverend minister." Edmund Calamy praised him as "a man of great humility and meekness; and great charity both in giving and forgiving." According to James Reid, Spurstowe was a man with a peaceable disposition." ... The Wells of Salvation... may well be the best book ever written on God's promises. The book contains the main content of several sermons, which are introduced by Spurstowe in a preface. He writes, "The promises are a large field in which the wise Merchant may find more pearls hidden, than are yet espied: A rich mine in which the diligent laborer may dig forth more fine gold, than any yet have taken from them."

May God graciously use this instructive book both to foster greater awareness of the rich treasures housed in Puritan writings and, more particularly, to encourage us to use the gospel promises by faith so as to gain victory in the spiritual conflicts we encounter daily in the third millennium. Let Spurstowe show you, as he claims, that God's "exceeding great and precious promises" (2 Pet. 1:4) are as large and numerous as the multitude of stars filling the creation's vast skies.

STALKER, JAMES

John Knox: His Ideas and Ideals
Published the year before the Quatercentenary "of the birth of the greatest of Scotsmen," as Stalker calls Knox, this is an easy-reading look at this great Reformer. Expressing great gratitude for David Laing's "immortal labours" in editing Knox's Works (
available at: http://www.swrb.com/catalog/K.htm ), and humbly directing the reader to these six volumes "if he desires to see Knox face to face," Stalker summarizes his intent, stating, "I do not pretend to have given a complete collection of Knox's good things; but at least I have creamed them and furnished enough to familiarize the reader not only with his ideas but with the remarkable phraseology in which these were expressed; and my hope is that the following pages may help to make it true that 'he, being dead, yet speaketh.'" For the bibliophiles this item contains a nice chapter summarizing Knox's books and letters.

SHORT BIOGRAPHY of DAVID STEELE

Born in Upper Creevaugh, County Donegal, Ireland, November 2, 1803.  He received his early education in the private and night schools of the vicinity, and labored upon the farm until his sixteenth year.  In 1820, he entered the Academy of Londonderry, and pursued the regular course of studies for three years.  He came to America in 1824, settling in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, where he worked as clerk for his uncle, and prosecuted his classical studies.  In 1825, he was engaged as teacher in the Academy of Ebensburgh, Pennsylvania, and the next year entered the Western University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1827.  He studied theology under the direction of  Rev. Dr. John Black at Pittsburgh, and was licensed by the Pittsburgh Presbytery, April 8, 1830.  He was ordained by the Ohio Presbytery, and installed pastor of the congregation of Brush Creek, Adams County, Ohio, June 6, 1831.

In 1840, he and Robert Lusk, together with several ruling elders, declined the ecclesiastical courts of the Reformed Presbyterian Church due to ecclesiastical tyranny. They erected the Reformed Presbytery, June 24, 1840.

He remained in Adams County, Ohio, preaching to adherents of the Reformed Presbytery until 1859, when he removed to Hill Prairie, Illinois.  In October, 1866, he removed to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he pastored a small congregation of original Covenanters and established a theological school.

In 1885, he removed to Galesburg, Illinois, and in the fall of 1886, returned to Philadelphia, where he died of old age and from the effects of a slight stroke of paralysis, June 29, 1887.  In later years, Steele was striken with blindness, but continued to "remain in the saddle," preferring diligence in ministry to retirement.

He was a learned and powerful preacher of the gospel, "his enemies themselves being judges," and attracted many members of the RP Church to hear him when they had occasion.  He was an adept in the ancient languages and a powerful thinker.  He held that the Reformed Presbyterian Church had departed from the attainments of the Reformation, especially in the matter of "voluntary associations."

He devoted much of his writing to demonstrating this defection, chastising the Reformed Presbyterian Church for her continuing defection from Covenanted Reformation.  He spent most of his life visiting those who adhered to the "good old way," ministering to them.  He was a tremendous controversialist, and manifested great inflexibility of character, for which he was despised by wayward brethren.

Toward the end of his life (1884), he stated, "The principles... for more than 40 years defended against many opponents… I still believe to be founded upon the Scriptures and long experience, with developments among opponents, has tended to confirm my earlier convictions."

He died in the belief that the principles which he held and propagated would one day triumph in the earth.

From http://www.covenanter.org/Steele/davidsteele.htm

It should also be noted that David Steele, though he was careful to maintain corporate ecclesiastical separation from corporate ecclesiastical sin and error, had no problem praising the gifts and writings of other Christians who did not believe exactly as he did. For example, in his classic work, Notes on the Apocalypse, Steele calls John Owen, "that prince of divines among English Dissenters" (see http://www.gutenberg.org/files/14485/14485-h/14485-h.htm for a free print copy of Steele's Notes on the Apocalypse, or http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?sid=6200554443 for free MP3s of this "must read" book).

Some also consider Steele the best theologian of the nineteenth century.

Quotes from Greg Barrow's book, The Covenanted Reformation Defended, by or about David Steele and his testimony to the truth:

"One simply needs to take the time to read what Covenanters like David Steele believed and practised in order to observe that they were simply upholding the historic testimony of the faithful men who preceded them."

Our disposition toward those who disagree with us.

"On the 7th of May , 1741, the Mount Herrick Declaration was published after receiving sanction from the correspondences and General Meeting of the United Societies. The spirit of our covenanted brethren echoes our own sentiments and disposition toward those of our brethren who differ from us.

We declare our esteem of and love for all the godly in these lands, who have the root of the matter in them, and love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity, who are studying godliness and have sad hearts for the tokens of God's sad displeasure, and the sins and abominations procuring the same, notwithstanding of their not being of the same sentiments and mind with us as to some parts of our testimony and practice (Matthew Hutchison, The Reformed Presbyterian Church in Scotland, 1893, Still Waters Revival Books reprint, 1997, p. 175, emphases added).

We have neither stated nor do we believe that those who profess the true religion and their children (the visible church universal) are only those who agree with us on every point of doctrine or practice. We do, however, fully concur with our Confession of Faith which states,

Saints by profession, are bound to maintain an holy fellowship and communion in the worship of God, and in performing such other spiritual services as tend to their mutual edification; as also in relieving each other in outward things, according to their several abilities and necessities. Which communion, as God offereth opportunity, is to be extended unto all those who, in every place, call upon the name of the Lord Jesus (Westminster Confession of Faith, 26:2).

In the universal visible church there are many true sons and daughters of God who have never even considered some of the questions we are now disputing. We fully concur with Pastor David Steele when he says,

Yes, unto them which believe Christ is precious; and I never question that he is so to multitudes who never heard of the British Covenants; but I grieve when these are lightly called the "old covenants" by those under the obligation of them... (David Steele, Reminiscences, 1883, Still Waters Revival Books reprint, 1997, p. 262, emphases added).

We, in the PRCE, love all the brethren who will not obstinately and wilfully speak or act contrary to the truth of God's word, with an approving love that is desirous of intimate Christian communion. We also love those who call themselves brethren, who wilfully and obstinately speak or act contrary to the truly professed religion, with a love of benevolence that is desirous of their correction and restoration to the truth. We love all men, as they are created in God's image, with a love of benevolence, desiring their regeneration and conversion in Christ by the grace of God."

Why then does Mr. _____ object that we make the Covenants, "at least 'a' rule of faith and practice"? The reason Mr. _____ is arguing like an Arminian is that he does not properly distinguish between the alone infallible rule of faith, and secondary rules of faith and practice. He does not seem to recognize that fallible standards bind our conscience as secondary rules of faith when they are agreeable to God's Word. It is not the subordinate standard that ultimately binds the conscience but rather the supreme standard of holy Scripture speaking in the subordinate standard that binds the conscience.

Pastor David Steele comments:

In short, while, on the ground and in the language of our reforming ancestors, we hold that our Covenants are a norma recta -- a right rule, with which other symbols of our profession should harmonize; we also hold that the Scriptures are norma recti, the rule of right, TO REGULATE ALL (The Reformation Advocate, 1874, Still Waters Revival Books reprint, 1997, Vol. 1:1, pp. 6, 7, emphases added).

Pastor Steele's faithful explanation places him in good company. Compare his explanation of our subordinate Covenants with that of the noted Scottish Commissioner to the Westminster Assembly, George Gillespie.

It is in vain for them to palliate or shelter their covenant-breaking with appealing from the covenant to the Scripture, for subordianta non pugnant. The covenant is norma recta,-- a right rule, though the Scripture alone be norma recti--the rule of right. If they hold the covenant to be unlawful, or to have anything in it contrary to the word of God, let them speak out. But to profess the breach of the covenant to be a grievous and great fault, and worthy of a severe censure, and yet to decline the charge and proofs thereof, is a most horrible scandal; yea, be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and give ear, O earth! how small regard is had to the oath of God by men professing the name of God (George Gillespie, The Works of George Gillespie, Male Audis, 1646, reprinted in 1991 [SWRB] from the 1846 edition, Vol. 1, Chapter 3, p. 13).

Furthermore, Gillespie notes that those who argue like Mr. _____ place themselves in very bad company.

[This is -- GB] a tenet looked upon by the reformed churches as proper to those that are inspired with the ghost of Arminius; for the remonstrants, both at and after the Synod of Dort, did cry down the obligation of all national covenants and oaths, &c., in matters of religion, under the color of taking the Scripture only for a rule. Well, we see the charge declined as nothing (George Gillespie, The Works of George Gillespie, Male Audis, 1646, reprinted in 1991 [SWRB] from the 1846 edition, Vol. 1, Chapter 3, p.13, emphases added).

There is no reasonable explanation for Mr. _____'s objection other than the fact that he has not adequately understood these fundamental truths. I'm sure the Arminian churches worldwide would approvingly endorse his objection, and in this regard he has unwittingly become their spokesman. I encourage the reader to obtain a copy of Samuel Rutherford's Free Disputation Against Pretended Liberty of Conscience and carefully examine whether or not Mr. _____ has entirely imitated the Arminians in this regard. Let the reader observe how little Mr. _____ truly understands about the necessity of covenanting and how ready he is to rail at those who, by the grace of God, have been given this knowledge. Mr. _____'s reasoning, if applied consistently, would result in railing against both Rutherford and Nehemiah as well. The PRCE does not equate the Covenants with Scripture any more than Nehemiah or Rutherford. The Covenants bind because they were lawfully sworn and agreeable to God's Word. Accordingly, these Covenants are fallible, subordinate, secondary rules of faith, and inasmuch as they are agreeable to God's Word they cannot be broken without sin."

David Steele comments:

"The only plausible objection offered by opponents to the doctrine and practice of public social covenanting is taken from the assumption, that it is superceded by the sacraments, especially the Lord's Supper. The assumption has never been proved, and is utterly groundless, as will at once appear to any unbiased mind, by considering that God instituted all three forms of taking hold of his covenant. If it be so that baptism and the Lord's Supper are substantially the same seals of the covenant as circumcision and the passover; then the consequence is inevitable, that as the whole people of Israel were taken and engaged to God at Sinai, he judged the two preceding forms incomplete. And since the privileges of God's covenant people are enlarged -- not abridged, under the New Testament dispensation, and that public covenanting was a matter of frequent prediction and promise under the Old dispensation; it follows that this instrumentality is to be continued and exemplified" (The Two Witnesses, 1859, SWRB reprint, 1997, p. 27)

I contend that Mr. _____ has so severely, either intentionally or ignorantly, overlooked the plain statements of David Steele, the Reformed Presbytery, and the PRCE, that he should be profoundly ashamed of himself. I have been involved in many debates over the years and I can honestly say that never has an opponent so blatantly ignored our plainest statements. Prejudice, in this form and intensity, must be directly answered by demonstrating that Mr. Bacon has possessed adequate information to leave him without excuse. I intend to do this by setting Mr. _____'s statements directly against what Pastor Steele, the Reformed Presbytery and the PRCE have said."

Is it true that David Steele, the Reformed Presbytery, and the PRCE require implicit faith?

In their Preface to the Auchensaugh Renovation, a committee of the Reformed Presbytery, made up of David Steele, Robert Alexander, and John Clyde state:

The reader may be assured that neither we nor the Reformed Presbytery, whose committee we are, claim Papal infallibility or Christian perfection; nor do we ask implicit faith in our documents. But we sincerely believe ourselves that the Auschensagh Renovation and the Bond, to which the foregoing statements are prefixed, will be found on examination to be sound, faithful and in nothing, "contrary to the Word of God"(Auschensagh Renovation, SWRB reprint, 1995, emphases added).

Beware of acting implicit faith. It is long since the error falsely imputed to us, was broached among professing Covenanters. For example -- we heard from the mouth of a minister in that body, more than a quarter of a century ago, the declaration in the pulpit: "The first [term of communion -- GB] is the only proper term of communion in the church, and the time is not distant, we trust, when she will have no more:" that is, when all the displays of a covenant God's justice, mercy, faithfulness, etc., in dealing with the Church and her Antichristian opposers, shall have passed into oblivion -- an unbelieving and ungrateful hope, or desire. The Protestant world is so denominated because simply of a solemn protest against Rome's impious claim to infallibility and cognate invasions of Messiah's prerogatives. Attach the attribute of infallibility to any of the subordinate standards of our Christian profession, and we are instantly deprived of them all, as a near and necessary consequence. We sincerely hope the Covenanter [James M. Willson] will arrive at clearer light on the general subject of creeds and confessions; and, if so, we are sure he will come to a better temper. It is part of the known character of the two witnesses that they contend for the faith once delivered to the saints, as the nearest and surest way to victory. Again, we would say to the reader, beware of exercising implicit faith in human authority as well as testimony; and hold in dread all assumptions of infallibility by Pope, Prelate or Presbyterian; and especially Reformed Presbyterian, standing by the exclusive supremacy of Zion's King (David Steele, The Two Witnesses, 1859, SWRB reprint, 1997, p. 41, emphases added).

David Steele adds:

Let no one imagine that I defend symbols of faith from force of habit, or because they are old, perfect, immutable, or infallible; for I have for many years repeatedly said the contrary: that no document framed by wisdom, learning, or piety of any uninspired man, or body of such, is either perfect or immutable, and much less infallible.... No, I plead not for immutability, but for the faithfulness of subordinate standards, both of doctrine and practice (David Steele, Reminiscences, 1883, SWRB, 1997, pp. 135, 136).

Now, does David Steele or other so--called "Steelites" even remotely resemble Mr. _____'s caricature? Do we teach implicit faith? If the reader had access to this information, as did Mr. _____, would he have written what Mr. _____ wrote? All he had to do was read the books we provided, or listen to Pastor Price's set of tapes on our Terms of Communion (19 cassettes, available at Still Waters Revival Books, or free on 19 MP3 beginning at http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?sid=1210510584) to be forever convinced of the contrary. Instead, he ignored the evidence and printed his vain imaginations. This, clearly, shows a serious lack of scholarship and integrity!

David Steele adds:

Even the doctrinal propositions of our Confessions and Catechisms are received, not because they are inspired or infallible; but simply because they are in the apprehension of the Christian, "agreeable to the holy Scriptures." Much more does this obviously apply to our solemn covenants as embodying the heroic achievements of our martyred and witnessing fathers. Add to these, all the real attainments of those who survived the overthrow of the "Second Reformation" (Pastor Steele's Printed Communications with the Editor of the Covenanter [James M. Willson], appended to Notes on the Apocalypse, in the forthcoming edition from Covenanted Reformed Presbyterian Publishing, pp. 400, 401, emphases added [or in Apostasy in the RPCNA, SWRB reprint, 1997]).

The evidence thus far is compelling and clear. Mr. Bacon was not even trying to accurately represent David Steele, the Reformed Presbytery or the PRCE.

Pastor David Steele aptly answers Mr. Bacon, rightly dividing that which is our alone infallible standard in matters relating to salvation from the fallible standards which are to be included in terms of communion.

No symbols of faith and order framed by uninspired men are faultless -- much less infallible, either in substance or form: otherwise they would not be subordinate. Divine truth is the sole ground of saving faith, and is not to be confounded with Terms of Communion, as ignorance and presumption commonly do [and as Mr. Bacon has overtly done -- GB]. Again, the testimony of Christ's witnesses in all its integral parts, is always and necessarily progressive until it shall have been finished. Even their statements of doctrine, their abstract and distinctive principles may, and often must be restated in diversified language, to meet the ever shifting position and subtile sophisms of adversaries. Also our Covenants, National and Solemn League may and ought to be renewed -- not that they have become old, as many say; but that they are to be owned as obligatory upon us, and a sense of their permanent obligation deepened upon our own souls, and exhibited to others by the solemnity of an Oath (The Reformed Presbytery, A Short Vindication of the Covenanted Reformation, 1879, SWRB reprint, 1996, p. 19, emphases added).

And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth (Revelation 11:3, AV).

Commenting on the two witnesses of Revelation 11:3 Pastor Steele says:

Consider the number of these witnesses; they are two, as this is the smallest number that can establish truth, Deut.17:6; 19:15. The Lawgiver himself, addressing the Jews, says: "It is written in your law that the testimony of two men is true," John 8:17. Not that we are to receive the testimony of every two men. The experience of all men is that "a false witness will utter lies;" and it is sometimes found that two may "agree together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord," Acts 5:9. But on the supposition that the witnesses are competent and credible; then it is the decision of Christ, endorsed by the common sentiment of mankind, that "we receive the witness of such men," 1 John 5:9. And although "the witness of God is greater" than that of any number of men; still, human witnesses do not need to be inspired to render their testimony credible; for then [if the witnesses are inspired -- GB], as the reader will perceive, the testimony is that of God, and of course ceases to be human testimony. This point is of the greatest moment, since not one word uttered by these two witnesses is inspired in the proper and formal sense of inspiration! This is too great an honour to confer upon the very chiefest of our covenanted confessors or martyrs. It savours too much of Rome (David Steele, The Two Witnesses, 1859, SWRB reprint, 1997, p. 7, emphases added).

Furthermore, Pastor Steele adds:

History is a record of past events, and to deserve the name of history the events recorded must be authentic, for "cunningly devised fables" are not history. Authentic history is of the essential nature of testimony. A witness on the stand gives a statement of facts, evidence, testimony. So true is it that not only minor matters of litigation, but even "death and life are in the power of the tongue"(Prov. 18:21). A very large portion of the Bible is historical. The first words in it announce one of the most important of historical facts: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth," The great importance of this statement appears from the speculations of heathen philosophers, and self--styled scientists in our own age.

For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water (2 Peter 3:5, AV).

Also many of the Psalms are historical, epitomizing the previous facts recorded in the Old Testament, that these might be more indelibly impressed upon the mind and heart of God's people, and that they "might not forget his works;" for then they "forget God their Saviour" (Ps. 16:13,21).

Moreover, the origin and progress of the visible church in the world, under different dispensations of mercy, is matter of historical record. She is on earth the only immortal corporation; and since the canon of inspired Scripture closed, she has had no one infallible historian. Many, indeed, have undertaken "to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among the disciples of Christ;" but "their witness agreed not together" (Luke 1:1; Mark 14:56). Those who take as guides in searching the history of the church, Mosheim, Milner, or many others, are following false guides, whose delineations portray the features of the "scarlet lady" rather than the "Lamb's wife." In this historical fact -- the almost universal misrepresentations of the spouse of Christ, the intelligent reader may discover the reason for a select class, whom the Lord Jesus expressly distinguishes from all others as "his witnesses," (Rev. 11:3), and the necessity for their testimony. These and these only are "children that will not lie" (Isa. 63:8); "and in their mouth is found no guile" (Rev.14:5). Hence, the necessity of historical testimony.

Again, history interprets prophecy, which is an ever increasing evidence that the Holy Scriptures are from God. How could it be known when the canon was settled but mainly by history? Or how can antichrist be identified, or the witnesses themselves but by history? For the doctrines, the worship, government and discipline of the church have all been misrepresented, counterfeited, and even the church herself (Rev. 17:18)! Thus it is apparent that the only way by which the witnesses can identify the true church is by comparing doctrine and order with the alone infallible rule, the Bible; and this comparing involves reasoning -- argument; history and argument do, therefore, constitute the church's testimony and supply her Terms of Communion, by which she is distinguished from the "flocks of the companions."

Tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth, where thou feedest, where thou makest thy flock to rest at noon: for why should I be as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions (Song of Solomon 1:7, AV, emphases added)?

STEELE, DAVID

Apostasy in the RPCNA: David Steele Debates James M. Willson

This debate took place in 1856 in the Covenanter magazine (edited by James M. Willson), with Steele's final response appearing in the Reformed Presbyterian magazine in 1857. In the course of this debate Steele shows how "Reformation Principles Exhibited" -- part of the RPCNA's subordinate standards from 1806 to 1979 -- "necessarily subverts the Covenanted Reformation."

This debate is also useful in that it shows that our modern malignants (like Richard Bacon, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Rowlett TX and Doug Wilson [Credenda Agenda magazine]), who continue to attack Steele, either do not understand what he has said, or, even worse, have libelled him without reading his work.

Steele's exchange with Willson is especially instructive concerning Steele's views of historical testimony, subordinate standards, terms of communion, and sola scriptura -- which were simply the views of the best classical Protestants of the First and Second Reformations.

The treatment Steele received from Willson was not surprising, and is the same the Puritan Reformed Church of Edmonton has received from neopresbyterians like Bacon and Doug Wilson in our day. As Bacon and Wilson have with the Puritan Reformed Church of Edmonton, Willson accused Steele of being Popish by requiring uninspired historical testimony as a term of communion. Steele deftly parried this slander, pointing out that by claiming infallibility for humanly composed doctrinal statements simply because they agreed with the Word of God (which makes them subordinate, not infallible), it was in fact Willson who made himself obnoxious to the charge of Popery.

Steele insisted,

"But if we 'cannot swear to the truth of history,' what is the reason? We assume that the only reason having the shadow of plausibility is this, we cannot be sure that the history is infallibly true. Well, then, if we can swear to the truth of doctrine [as we do in vowing to uphold Confessions of Faith -- RB], the reason must be, because we are sure of its infallibility (i.e. taken in context Steele is pointing out that what we swear to uphold must be without error -- though yet capable of improvement -- as his quote below proves -- RB)."

Willson replied, to his shame, "Certainly, 'infallible' because Bible truth."

Steele's position against the scurrilous, unscholarly and simplistic attacks against him, regarding the false charges of popery, are also refuted in his Reminiscences, where he writes,

"Let no one imagine that I defend symbols of faith from the force of habit, or because they are old, perfect, immutable or infallible; for I have for may years repeatedly said the contrary: that no document framed by the wisdom, learning, or piety of any uninspired man, or body of such, is either perfect or immutable, and much less infallible. But alas! most of those who cry loudest for liberty and against what they call 'fetters of intellect,' etc., make the nearest approach to the blasphemous claims of apostate Rome to infallibility. Only put the majority in the Pope's place, and any change of standards or innovation must be right, however unscriptural or irrational. No, I plead not for the immutability, but for the faithfulness of subordinate standards, both of doctrine and practice... all true progress consists in conformity of the Bible" (pp. 135-136, 196, emphases added).

Additionally, please note that contrary to false reports that have been circulated by a few unscrupulous schismatics (Bacon, Coldwell, et al.) we have never called the RPCNA (Reformed Presbyterian Church in North America) "apostate." That is, we have never said that the RPCNA has degenerated so far as not to be considered a church in any sense. We do consider there to be a visible church, as to being (esse), in the RPCNA. However, we have clearly testified -- and will, by God's grace continue to do so -- to the apostasy (or falling away from biblical Reformation) in the RPNCA.

As there are varying degrees of faithfulness, heresy, etc., so are there varying degrees of apostasy (i.e. falling away). By this we mean that the RPCNA, as a body (based on her corporate public testimony), has fallen away from the truth to such an extent that they now lack the lawful form of the visible church (cf. Calvin's Institutes 4.2.12). They are no longer a church as to "well-being" (bene esse; compare WCF 25:2 [which deals with the "being" of the visible church] with WCF 25:3 [which deals with the "well-being" of the visible church]).

Our duty, as Christians, in such cases is clear,

"Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us" (2 Thes. 3:6).

"Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them" (Rom. 16:17, emphasis added).

When Samuel Rutherford (and the other Protesting Covenanters) refused to serve the Lord's Supper to the backsliding Resolutioners (unfaithful Covenanters) and testified against and refused to attend their pretended assemblies, (and the Resolutioners were far more faithful then than the RPCNA, OPC, PCA, etc., are today), the Protesters were simply maintaining the classic Reformation position on the visible church and biblical separation. On the basis of Scripture they did as we are doing today -- recognizing the crucial distinction between the "being" and "well being" of the visible church and the fundamental distinction between the church in a "settled state" versus the church in a "broken state" (and these basic distinctions permeate the writings of all the best Reformers on the church).

Incidentally, ignoring (or ignorance of) these two crucial distinctions is the reason why so many people confuse the positions taken in Samuel Rutherford's writings (e.g. they misapply Rutherford's words referring to the church in a "settled state" to the church in an "unsettled" (or broken) state; thus, making Rutherford's actions in the Protester/Resolutioner controversy contradict his own writings).

Thus, it can easily be seen that in his day David Steele faithfully resisted many of the same innovations that our Protesting fathers (like Rutherford, Guthrie, Renwick, etc.) resisted against the apostatizing Resolutioners (and apostate Papists and Prelates). For this, he was slandered and ostracized, "choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches" than accepted status in a whorishly backsliding church.

Sadly, even with her declension in the mid-1800's, the RPCNA then looks pristine when compared with the RPCNA today. May God use this debate to reclaim many dear brethren in that dangerously deformed and deforming body! 19 pages. (N.B. Even as Steele did with Willson, Greg Barrow has exposed the Popery -- and Independency, Arminianism, and other egregious errors -- in Richard Bacon's confused and malicious attacks on modern Covenanters in his, The Covenanted Reformation Defended Against Contemporary Schismatics [free at: http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualnls/CovRefGB.htm or as a photocopy]. STEELE, DAVID, SR.

A Concise History of the Reformed Presbyterian Church from the Middle of the Sixteenth Century and of the Reformed Presbytery from 1840 Till the Present Time
A good introduction to the ongoing battle for Christ's Crown and Covenant. Takes the Protestors side and shows how a faithful remnant remained true to the Biblical principles of covenanted Reformation. Clearly demonstrates how that "(a)mong the nations of Christendom, Scotland stands preeminent in this work of faith and labor of love to God and man. Her National Covenant and its obvious sequel, the Solemn League and Covenant, are memorial columns bearing inscriptions, perhaps more important to mankind than those of the Moabite stone, or the Hieroglyphics of Egypt. Often obscured by defection and apostasy, those inscriptions are not obliterated. They continue to exhibit the Divine institution and mutually independent functions of Church and State a 'Gospel Ministry and Scriptural Magistracy'; their coordination and subservience to the family, as the primary organism in human society. They do also prescribe the duty of all ranks; of the king in his palace and of the humblest citizen in his cottage, to keep up the worship of God, each 'in his person and family.' They moreover contain a Standing Testimony against the heresies, tyrannies and cruelties of Diocesan and Erastian Prelacy; whether misnamed Catholicism or Episcopacy." Here, as with Guthrie's final cry (while standing on the scaffold), the martyrs voice is once again being heard in our lands, "The Covenants! The Covenants! shall yet be Scotland's (the world's, RB) reviving!" Also sets forth the principles contained in the following two statements: "A union without truth is a conspiracy against the truth, in the Church," and "A toleration of all religions is the cut-throat of the true religion, in the state."

The Contending Witness, The Reformation Advocate and The Original Covenanter magazines

The following list of magazines, edited by David Steele, comprise what is likely the best compilation of Christian periodicals ever amassed under one set of bindings. Nothing we know of (before or since), authored as magazine articles related to full-orbed nation shaking biblical Reformation, even comes close to the consistent quality of writing found in these short works on various subjects. Steele himself should probably be considered the best theologian of the nineteenth century, and the other contributors to these magazines were all approaching the same class. A healthy portion of Steele's writing is found in these magazines, as he only wrote a few other books, so the reader is encouraged to sample for himself some of the best writing (defending the Covenanted Reformation) you will find anywhere!

Continuous Singing
The title continues: "In the Ordinary Public Worship of God, Considered in the Light of Scripture and the Subordinate Standards of the Reformed Presbyterian Church; In Answer to Some Letters of Inquiry Addressed to the Writer." Here Steele defends the Apostolic practice of "lining out" the Psalms in public worship -- noting love for the brethren (i.e. young children, others that can not read, etc.; but can join in the worship when the Psalms are lined) as the primary motivation for this practice; in accord with God's command (1 Pet. 3:8). 8 pages.

Declaration and Testimony for the Present Truth (1864)
Seeks to, writes Steele, "lay before the reader some of the desolations of Zion (i.e. the church--RB)," that the readers "eye may affect his heart,-- that he may be induced to search out the causes of these desolations; and that he may be aroused to the use of such divinely appointed means as the Lord will own and bless for the healing of our breaches, which are great like the sea." Numerous other subscribers note that they "have been grieved with steps of defection from our Covenanted Reformation," especially among those "several bodies who claim ecclesiastical relation to our reformation progenitors," and set their names to this testimony with the hope of uniting "the witness for Christ in Britain, Ireland, and America, on the platform of our Church in the year 1649." 10 pages.

STEELE, DAVID

Notes on the Apocalypse (1870)

In 1779, in their Testimony and Warning Against the Blasphemies and Idolatry of Popery, the Reformed Presbytery called Durham's Complete Commentary... On the Book of Revelation [$39.98, 2 vol. rare bound photocopy], "the best exposition of that book that has yet been published" (p. 61n). Had they had the privilege of reading Steele's Notes on the Apocalypse we are quite certain that they would have given it a similar endorsement. Though written in a different style than Durham's work, Steele's notes on Revelation may be even more valuable in many respects -- Steele having taken a more decided position "in the wilderness." Steele also had the benefit of many more resources, having written over two centuries later. Steele's aim in writing this book is made clear in his own words taken from the preface,

As this work is intended for the instruction and edification of the unlearned, rather than for the entertainment of the learned, words of foreign extract are used as seldom as possible. Practical remarks and reflections are rarely introduced; the principal aim being simply to ascertain and present to the reader the mind of the Holy Spirit. How far this object has been accomplished, is of course left to the judgment of the honest inquirer. The reader, however, in forming his judgment of the value of these Notes, may be reminded of that inspired rule in searching the Scriptures,--"Comparing spiritual things with spiritual." To assist him in the application of this divine rule, many chapters and verses are quoted from other parts of the Bible, but especially within the Apocalypse itself; that by concentrating the various rays upon particular texts or symbols, their intrinsic light may be rendered more luminous. Thus the interpretation given, if correct, may be confirmed and illustrated.

Appendices include a section on, The New Jerusalem, The Antichrist, The Image of the Beast, The Beast's "deadly wound," The Little Book, The Death of the Witnesses, The Mark of the Beast, The First Resurrection, The Identity of the Two Witnesses, Sounding of the Seventh Trumpet and The Title of this Book (i.e. the Book of Revelation--RB). This work also includes various "animadversions on the interpretations (of Revelation--RB) of several among the most learned and approved expositors of Britain and America."

Comments on this work include the four given below, all which were given without the solicitation or knowledge of the author.

1. The Evangelical Repository notes, "the author adduces a greater number of Scriptural illustrations than any other writer on prophecy we ever met with."

2. Hutcheson writes, "I can recommend it to any person as condensing the best thoughts to be had on the subject."

3. Brooks says, "I have derived more knowledge of the Apocalypse from this work than from all other expositions which I have consulted."

4. And finally, John Cunningham comments, "It is neither a dictionary nor concordance; neither a confession of faith, nor an encyclopedia, but a thesaurus of Theology, embodying the characters of all these."

Steele dedicated this work to John Cunningham, author of The Ordinance of Covenanting ($14.99 P, $29.00 HP). 323 pages.

STEELE, DAVID

Reminiscences: Historical and Biographical of a Ministry in the Reformed Presbyterian Church, During 53 Years (1883)

Since Steele forms a continuing theological link with the faithful General Assemblies of the Church of Scotland (1638-1649), this book is of great importance. Steele held to the attainments of the second (or covenanted) Reformation which gave us the Solemn League and Covenant and the Westminster Standards -- and other Covenanters who follow in this train (along with the Scottish Covenanters, like Rutherford and Gillespie) are sometimes derisively branded as "Steelites" or "Cameronians."

Stewart notes that "this autobiography gives us a great deal of information about Steele's life and thought, but the material is not well organized historically because Steele was using this work as an apology rather than a strict autobiography. In his reminiscences (p. 151) Steele likens himself to "Old Morality" who in Sir Walter Scott's Tales of My Landlord went around with chisel and mallet in hand renewing the tombstone inscriptions on the graves of Scottish martyrs of the 17th century" (A Brief History of the Reformed Presbytery, p. 2).

In the preface Steele himself writes,

It is not expected that the present publication will be popular with the present generation. The topics treated are not adapted to the tastes of many in this age, and to most persons the principles discussed will be as riddles -- quite enigmatical (Ps. 128:2). The testimony of Christ's witnesses has never been acceptable to the world, least of all to backsliders. Nevertheless, there is warrantable ground to expect that what is contained in the following pages will be helpful to some in following ages, who may be moved by the Spirit of God to inquire and search for the "landmarks which the fathers have set." Among these will be found that grand "international document," the Solemn League, ready to be placed in the foundation of the millennial temple. "When the Lord shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory," and, with an eye to that highest and most desirable end, this contribution is with humble confidence committed to his patronage."

STEELE, DAVID

The Two Witnesses: Their Cause, Number, Character, Furniture and Special Work (1859)

This is a great companion volume to Steele's Notes on the Apocalypse. Here Steele zeros in on and works primarily from the text of Revelation 11:13, "I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophecy." Steele deals with testimony-bearing, Antichrist, Popery, the beasts of Revelation, the mark of the beast, 666, the image of the beast, civil and ecclesiastical apostasy, Reformation, covenanting, heresy, schism, terms of communion, slavery, sectarianism, Mormonism, Independency, freemasonry, history, worship, idolatry, Britain, the United States, Canada, mystical Babylon, the last days, the ultimate victory of the church and a host of other subjects!

As is usually the case with Steele, he makes the doctrines of Scripture eminently practical. For example, note how the faithful witnesses are continually called to testify against open opposition to the Lord's Covenanted Zion and the attainments of biblical Reformation (in "the faith which was once delivered unto the saints"); and against whom this testimony is directed:

(T)hese witnesses are called and commissioned to testify especially against Antichrist -- a false christ, and therefore an opposing christ. But Christ is to be considered either personally or mystically; either abstractly in his personal rights and prerogatives, or in the concrete, in the rights and immunities of his church. There is this prejudice, too prevalent, against Christians testifying against Christians! This we are often told, is contrary to the law of charity. We have not so learned Christ. They are not all Israel which are of Israel. Much of the business of these two prophets is to oppose prophets -- to prophesy against the shepherds, Ezek. 34:2. Moses with his miracles must confront the magicians with their enchantments, Exod. 8:19. Elijah must confront the prophets of Baal, 1 Kings 18:25. Paul must counteract false apostles, 2 Cor. 11:13. In short, the direct object of these witnesses' testimony is apostate christendom -- those who depart from the faith, 1 Tim. 4:1 -- who have gone out from fellowship and renounced the doctrines of the apostolic church, 1 John 2:19. Their special work is to testify against error and its propagators and abettors, together with ungodliness, the natural fruit of error, rather than against pagans. (The Two Witnesses, p. 14).

(T)hese two witnesses have always testified -- not formally against pagans or infidels as such; but -- against apostate Christians, as composing an organized and complex system of opposition to the Lord and his Anointed. And just here, the witnesses have detected the secret of Antichrist's successful enterprise among the human family..."Many false prophets are gone out into the world... this is a deceiver and an Antichrist," 2 John 7. The combination is ostensibly on the side and in the interest of Christ, and the elements of which Antichrist is composed were obviously professing Christians, "They went out from us, but they were not of us, for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us, " I John 2:19. Here is the apostasy, and so the witnesses are fully borne out in asserting that Antichrist is a great Christian apostasy! To trace the origin and development, in the organization and modifications of this enemy of all righteousness, is the special work of Christ's witnesses. (The Two Witnesses, pp. 17-18).

Moreover, having taken his own place "in the wilderness" (i.e. having separated himself from, and having been ostracized by the "civilization" of the obstinately defecting RPCNA and other unfaithful denominations of his day [2 Thes. 3:6;14-15; Rev. 12:6; 17:3]), it was given to Steele to see and expound those grand old principles of our covenanted forefathers (who sat at Westminster and in the best Reformed churches during both the first and second Reformations -- the Scottish Presbyterians being granted the greatest measure of light as a settled body from 1638-1649). Thus, if you are interested in Reformation eschatology, with some of the strongest possible application, individually and corporately (in keeping with the body of Reformed truth), it is unlikely that you will find a better introduction to these topics than this!

As an additional bonus we have added Steele's 19 page debate with James M. Willson (a prominent RPCNA minister) to this book (along with a number of other pertinent documents). Since Steele references this theological clash in his preface to the Two Witnesses this makes a fitting appendix to add to this work.

We hope that you obtain and study this fine work -- and that you will find it edifying, as well as a useful weapon in your battle with the beasts of Revelation. 101 pages.

STEVEN, WILLIAM

Answers to Twelve Queries, Proposed to the Serious Consideration of the Reformed Presbytery, and Their Followers (1744)
This is an answer to William Fletcher's 12 questions to the Reformed Presbytery, found in the postscript of his book The Scripture Loyalist. Steven shows that the Reformed Presbytery was walking in the footsteps of the Covenanted and Reformed flock -- standing on the principles which the martyrs upheld and died for -- in defence of Christ's Crown and Covenant. He defends the classic Reformed position in regard to the civil magistrate. Examples of subjects dealt with include: a "vindication of the distinction between preceptive and providential Magistrates;" "that Christ, Luke 20:25; did not recognize the power of Caesar as Lawful;" "the Scripture qualifications of Magistrates;" "that the Covenanters, in the persecuting period, considered it as their duty to have rejected the King's authority, when he overturned the work of God;" etc. In short, this book is a vindication and defence of the principles and testimony of the Reformed Presbytery on the head of the civil magistrate -- in opposition to the errors of the Secession Church (which errors are held today by a good number of professing Protestants). 229 pages.

STEWART, ALEXANDER

Roman Dogma and Scripture Truth
"In these lectures Dr. Stewart has conclusively proved that many of the dogmas of the Church of Rome have no foundation in the Word of God; that her conception of the way of salvation is gravely defective; and that her boasted authority is freely utilized as priestly tyranny. The modernists get some shrewd wipes in passing. The leading statements are amply vouched for; and the statements of Roman doctrines are carefully drawn from recognized authorities of that Church. Could candid Romanists be persuaded to study this volume, it might lead them to renounce their present Church connection. Seldom have I read any course of lectures with so much pleasure and genuine satisfaction," writes David Hay Fleming in his foreword to this volume. 270 pages.

STEWART, JAMES

Jus Populi Vindicatum or the People's Right to Defend Themselves and Their Covenanted Religion Vindicated (1669)
The subtitle reads: "Wherein the Act of Defence and Vindication, which was interprised Anno 1666 is particularly justified: The lawfulnesse of private Persons defending their Lives, Libertyes and Religion, against manifest Oppression, Tyranny and violence, exerced (exercised--RB) by Magistrates Supream and Inferior contrare to Solemn Vows, Covenants, Promises, Declarations, Professions, Subscriptions, and Solemne Engadgments, is demonstrated by many Arguments. Being a full Reply to the first part of the Survey of Naphtaly, etc." This is Stewart's defence of Naphtali against the attack of Andrew Honeyman who became Bishop of Orkney in 1664. 508 pages.

STEWART, JAMES and JAMES STIRLING

Naphtali, or The Wrestlings of the Church of Scotland for the Kingdom of Christ, From the Beginning of the Reformation of Religion Unto the Year, 1667. Together with the Last Speeches and Testimonies of some Who have Died for the Truth Since the Year 1660... (1693)

Stewart, a Covenanter lawyer and writer, is characterized by Wodrow as "a great Christian, and an able Statesman, one of the greatest Lawers ever Scotland bred, of universall learning, of vast reading, great and long experience in publick business..." (Analecta II, 205). This book is "(t)he product of joint authorship. The first and logical part of this famous covenanting work was executed by Sir James Stewart of Goodtrees; it bears the stamp of a mind of great vigor and grasp. The narrative portion was written by the Rev. James Stirling of Paisley, whose Recollections form a interesting portion of Wodrow's Analecta. In 1667 the Council issued a proclamation against Naphtali, ordering it to be burned. (Wod., II., 100.) All copies were to be delivered up to the nearest magistrates, and a fine of ten thousand pounds Scots was the penalty inflicted upon any in whose hands the book should afterwards be found. It passed through the flames unscathed only to become dearer than ever to the Scottish hearts. Numerous editions have appeared, edited by such honored names as Dr. Henry Duncan, Ruthwell, Dr. W. Wilson, Carmylie, and others... The Book was translated into Dutch in 1668 by Borstius of Rotterdam... The literature of the covenanting age must not be tried by a severe aesthetic standard. During the persecutions, indeed, it was confined chiefly to protests, declarations, and dying testimonies. In these last, as collected in Naphtali and elsewhere, there is a certain severe, purged simplicity, a pathos and grandeur which move you to your depths. There are not many individual expressions that will bear quotation; the power is in the whole, and you cannot help admiring the manly sense, spirit, calmness, dignity, and piety which distinguished the sufferers to a degree so equal that you fancy them a band of brothers" (cited in Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, pp. 375-367). A rare old gem of 559 pages.

SUNDRY MINISTERS OF LONDON

The Divine Right of Church Government (Jus Divinum Regiminis Ecclesiastici), Wherein it is Proved that the Presbyterian Government, By Preaching and Ruling Elders, in Sessional, Presbyterial, and Synodical Assemblies, May Lay the Only Lawful Claim to a Divine Right, According to the Holy Scriptures, c. 1646, 1844 ed.

This is one of the all time classic defenses of the divine right of Presbyterianism. It also gives us a clear picture of the original intent of the English Presbyterians working at the Westminster Assembly (and is therefore very useful in determining the original intent of the Westminster Confession itself). It can be seen here that it was the strong conviction of the majority of English divines at Westminster that Presbyterianism is the only form of church government that is instituted by God in His Word.

David Hall, (the editor of the Naphtali Press edition), states, the book "was not written as a polemical tract, as if to prop up some moribund tradition; rather it is an exemplar of gentle and reasoned discourse." Published anonymously, during the sitting of the Westminster Assembly, because of the Erastian leaning Parliament's "gag rule," this work is considered by some as "an even truer record of the Westminster divines' views of government than the final (politically suppressed) standards" (Coldwell, Naphtali Press edition).

Moreover, Hall goes so far as to state that "perhaps no single work is as illuminating for original intent [of the Westminster Standards] as this rare work printed contemporaneously with the meeting of the Assembly;" and that "acquaintance with the political and ecclesiastical events of the time narrows down the possible authorship of this (book -- RB) to either (the) Westminster divines themselves, or sympathizers of the Westminster Assembly of divines (p. xvi).

Hall also notes that Hetherington (in his masterful History of the Westminster Assembly, p. 270) asserts that this book was the Westminster divine's answer to the English parliament's "nine queries" that were intended "to discourage their thoroughly Presbyterian views." Hall continues,

In the first comprehensive Scottish history of the Assembly, William Hetherington concludes safely: 'Judging from internal evidence, in matter, manner, and style, it appears most certain that this work at least embodies the substance of the answer prepared by the Assembly, somewhat enlarged and modified by the city ministers in whose name it was published.' Although Hetherington (who in a footnote wished for the reprinting of this very work as 'a very valuable contribution to the Presbyterian cause in the present day') initially infers that the work of the Assembly and the London ministers was merged, such that 'so much of the one was transfused into the other as to render then to all practical intents one work,' at the conclusion of his history he concludes with more certainty: "The Jus Divinum of the city ministers appears to me to be both virtually and substantially the Assembly's Answer to the Parliament, containing actually that very Answer as prepared by them; but with such additional amplifications in statement and illustrations, by the city ministers themselves, as might both render it more complete and fit for publication as a distinct work on the subject, and at the same time entitle them to publish it on their own responsibility' (Hall, pp. xviii-xix, citing Hetherington, History of the Westminster Assembly pp. 270, 362).

Furthermore, "not only do we have confirmation from numerous sources that the 2 December 1646 Jus Divinum reflects the Assembly's original intent, we also see along with that the undisputable historical notation that the Assembly considered itself bound by a jus divnum, not merely 'guided' by a nebulous jus hamanum. The difference is cataclysmic" (Hall, p. xxii).

In The Divine Right of the Gospel Ministry these same authors later give us a glimpse of how different their jus divinum presbyterianism is from much of what "presbyterians" today believe. "So strongly were they committed to this thorough-going jus divinum view that they stated the following 'four things that justly deserve to be abhorred by all good Christians: (1) An Universal Toleration of all Religions; (2) An Universal Admittance of all men to the Lord's Supper; (3) Universal Grace, that is, that Christ died equally for all, and that all men have free-will to be saved; and (4) Universal Allowance of all that suppose themselves gifted to preach without Ordination" (Hall, p. xxi).

This photocopy edition contains the appendix which sets forth,

Extracts from some of the best authors who have written on church government, concerning the scriptural qualifications and duties of church members; the sole right of gospel ministers to preach the gospel; the people's divine right to choose their own pastors; together with an abstract of the arguments of the great Dr. Owen (though a professed "Independent" at the time) in favour of the Divine right of the office of the ruling elder.

This edition also includes a preface, "The Editor to the Reader," written by the Cameronian "T.H" (Thomas Henderson) -- an Irish Reformed Presbyterian who was also the author to the forward of James Douglas' Strictures on Occasional Hearing. Henderson recommends this volume as "one of the best defences of presbytery which he has ever seen."

SUNDRY MINISTERS OF LONDON

The Divine Right of the Gospel Ministry (Jus Divinum Ministerii Evangelici) 1654

As the full title intimates this book is divided into two major parts. The first part contains,

a justification of the Gospel ministry in general, the necessity of ordination thereunto by imposition of hands, the unlawfulness of private men assuming to themselves either the office or work of the ministry without a lawful call and ordination, etc. Part two covers "a justification of the present ministers of England, both such as were ordained during the prevalency of Episcopacy from the foul aspersion of antichristianism: and those who have been ordained since its abolition, from the unjust imputation of novelty: proving that a Bishop and Presbyter are all one in Scripture; and that ordination by Presbyters is most agreeable to the Scripture pattern. Together with an appendix, wherein the judgement and practice of antiquity about the whole matter of Episcopacy, and especially about the ordination of ministers, is briefly discussed.

Moreover, The Divine Right of the Gospel Ministry gives us a further glimpse of how different the old and faithful jus divinum of presbyterianism (taught by English representatives at the Westminster Assembly) is from our modern, so-called "presbyterianism."

Hall notes, "So strongly were they committed to this thorough-going jus divinum view that they stated the following 'four things that justly deserve to be abhorred by all good Christians:

(1) An Universal Toleration of all Religions.

(2) An Universal Admittance of all men to the Lord's Supper.

(3) Universal Grace, that is, that Christ died equally for all, and that all men have free-will to be saved.

(4) Universal Allowance of all that suppose themselves gifted to preach without Ordination" (Introduction to the Naphtali edition, p. xxi).

Hall further states that

these ministers viewed their commitments to both of these jus divinum aspects (i.e. to the divine right of Presbyterian church government and the divine right of a Presbyterian Gospel ministry--RB) as to 'the seamless coat of Christ.' Throughout this second document, the authors speak in continuity with the earlier volume with the main error to be corrected, as stated as: 'That there is no such Office as the Office of the Ministry; or That this Office is quite lost; or That every man that thinks himself gifted, may intrude into the Ministerial Office. These opinions we judge destructive to Christian Religion, and an in-let to Popery and all error, to all disorder and confusion, and at last to all profaneness and Atheism (Ibid.).

In short, when the ministry is disparaged (and open to every heretic and schismatic who calls himself to this sacred task) the truth of Scripture will be trampled underfoot, the visible church (constitutionally) rent in pieces (by those denying a biblically covenanted uniformity), and the toleration of every foul error will become commonplace (sounds like today, doesn't it?).

This is an English Presbyterian classic written by some of the men who attended the Westminster Assembly. It is a companion volume to their earlier Divine Right of Church Government and should be studied in conjunction with this unsurpassed work. 351 pages.

SUNDRY MINISTERS OF LONDON

A Vindication of the Presbyterial Government and Ministry (1650, London edition)

Twelve major sections are contained in this book:

1. That there is a Church-Government by Divine Right.

2. That the Magistrate is not the Fountain of Church-Government.

3. That the Presbyterial-Government is by Divine Right.

4. The Inconveniencies of the Congregational Way.

5. That the Ruling Elder is by Divine Right.

6. That it is the will of Jesus Christ that all sorts of persons should give an account of their Faith to the Minister and Elders before admission to the Lord's Supper; together with Answers to the usual Objections made against it.

7. Directions to the Elders for the right managing of their Office.

8. Directions to such as are admitted to the Lord's Supper, for the right sanctifying of God's Name in that Ordinance & for their carriage one toward another.

9. Rules to preserve People from the Errors of these Times.

10. That Separation from our Churches is justly charged with Schism.

11. Than Ministers formerly ordained by Bishops need no new Ordination.

12. The necessity and usefulness of Catechizing.

This was the second of three major works published by these famous London divines -- the title page noting that this book was "Published By the Ministers and Elders met together in a Provincial Assembly, Novemb. 2d, 1649." The first of their works was The Divine Right of Church Government (Jus Divinum Regiminis Ecclesiastici), Wherein it is Proved that the Presbyterian Government, By Preaching and Ruling Elders, in Sessional, Presbyterial, and Synodical Assemblies, May Lay the Only Lawful Claim to a Divine Right, According to the Holy Scriptures (c. 1646, 1844 ed., above) the third being The Divine Right of the Gospel Ministry (Jus Divinum Ministerii Evangelici) (1654, above). Great insights into the thinking of the English Covenanters (some who served at the Westminster Assembly) are to be had here. 156 pages.

SWINNOCK, GEORGE

Works of George Swinnock (5 volumes)

The five volumes of Swinnock's WORKS are here reprinted from James Nichol's edition of 1868.

Swinnock, an English Puritan, is one of the easiest to read Puritans. Here are some quotes from Swinnock's works:

Pride is the shirt of the soul, put on first and put off last.

Sin goes in a disguise, and thence is welcome; like Judas, it kisses and kills; like Joab, it salutes and slays.

Consider also the word of God which thou hast heard on that day [the Lord's Day]; do thou, like Mary, ponder it in thine heart. Meditation to the word is what fire is to water; though water be naturally so cold, yet put fire under it, and it will make it hot and boiling; so, though thine heart be cold in regard of affection to the word, put but this fire under it, and it will boil with love to it. 'Oh, how love I thy law!' There is his heat of affection, (the expression is both by way of interrogation and acclamation, shewing the fervency and intention of his love,) but what was the fire which caused it? 'It is my meditation all the day,' Ps. cxix.

The reason why some men profit so little by the word is, want of meditation. If a man can eat his food, and as soon as it is in his stomach vomit it up again, it is no wonder if he get little strength by it, or if he pine and consume away. Truly, if sermons enter in at one ear and out at the other, making no stay with thee, I shall not marvel if they work no change in thee.

Charles Spurgeon wrote of Swinnock,

George Swinnock had the gift of illustration largely developed, as his works prove . . . they served his purpose, and made his teaching attractive . . . there remains 'a rare amount of sanctified wit and wisdom.'

Dr. James Hamilton writes,

We confess that we have rejoiced in the writings of Swinnock as those that find great spoil. So pithy and pungent and practical, few books are more fitted to keep the attention awake, and few so richly reward it.

The editor of the Nichol's reprint of Swinnock writes,

Swinnock's principal work, The Christian Man's Calling, is one of the fullest, and, we venture to think, one of the best exhibitions of the gospel in its application to the ordinary affairs of life. There are few better works of practical religion in our language.

Dr. Joel Beeke, in his book Meet the Puritans, With A Guide To Modern Reprints, writes

He was ejected . . .  in 1662 for Nonconformity. For several years he preached in private houses in the surrounding area and prepared a collection of his works for the press (1655). . . .  Swinnock's works show keen sensitivity to the Scriptures and their applications to daily life.

Also introduces some of the reasons why these Scriptural teachings were held in such high esteem; showing why multitudes died a martyr's death rather than denying Christ before men in relinquishing the precious truths.

SYMINGTON, WILLIAM

On the Atonement and Intercession of Jesus Christ (1854)

This is the companion volume to Symington's classic Messiah the Prince listed below. In part one, we find an extensive work comparing differing views regarding the nature, necessity, matter, value, extent, and result of the atonement. Part two deals with the reality, nature, matter, properties and results of the intercessory work of Christ. Encouraging and precise.

"The reappearance of this book by the Covenanter and social reformer, William Symington -- south-west Scotland's most important theologian of the nineteenth century -- is a cause for great rejoicing. Focusing almost exclusively on the 'passive' obedience of Christ, Symington's treatment of the atonement is not complete; but few finer accounts of this aspect of the work of Christ exist. Characterized by exegetical insight and rhetorical passion, it deserve to be placed along side similar treatments by Hugh Martin and George Smeaton," writes Derek Thomas (Professor of Systematic and Practical Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson Mississippi).

Over 300 pages.

SYMINGTON, WILLIAM

Messiah the Prince or, the Mediatorial Dominion of Jesus Christ (1884)

This is the standard work on the kingdom of God in English! There is nothing else like it; it is one-of-a kind! It covers the necessity, reality, and qualifications of Christ's dominion over not only the church, but all nations too. Anything less is to rob Christ of His magnificent, majestic, mediatorial glory -- for He is the King of kings and Lord of lords. "While books on the priestly work of the Redeemer, and especially on the Atonement, are numerous," notes the introduction to the American edition, "no formal and exhaustive discussion of the kingly office of the Messiah... and its application to various classes of moral agents is elsewhere to be found... It is cause for satisfaction that the only treatise, as yet, upon this subject, is a work of signal ability, lucid in arrangement, reverent in spirit, and with hardly an exception, sound and judicious in its conclusion. Its very merits are probably, in part, the reason why no other work on the same subject has appeared, and until it is supplanted by a better work -- an event not likely soon to occur -- it will have a value peculiar to itself."

Chapters include "The Necessity of the Mediatorial Dominion," "The Universality of the Mediatorial Dominion," "The Mediatorial Dominion Over the Church," and "Over the Nations," plus much more.

In short, this is a unique book devoted to the absolute Kingship and dominion of the Lord Jesus Christ -- over all heaven and earth! And He will continue His present reign from heaven until every enemy of His is conquered, "For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet" (1 Cor. 15:25). 360 pages.

The Canon Ratified in the National Synod of the Reformed Church Held at Dordrecht (1618-19)

On the Reformation Bookshelf CDs: "This famous Synod of Dordt (1618-19) was held in order to settle a serious controversy in the Dutch churches initiated by the rise of Arminianism... Although this was a national synod of the Reformed churches of the Netherlands, it had an international character, since it was composed not only of Dutch delegates but also of twenty-six delegates from eight foreign countries... In the Canons the Synod of Dordt rejected the Arminian views and set forth the Reformed doctrine on unconditional election, limited atonement, total depravity, irresistible grace, and the perseverance of saints (later known as TULIP)."

SYNOD OF THE REFORMED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN SCOTLAND

An Expostulation With Those Christians and Christian Churches, in the United States of America, That Are Implicated in the Sin of Slaveholding (1848)
Andrew and William Symington were both on the committee that produced this paper. It goes over the Scriptural data regarding slavery, applying it directly to the United States in the author's day. One, of the many, interesting (and sad) notes brought forth in this work asks, "Are you not to blame, also, in tamely submitting to those laws which prohibit you from teaching the slaves to read the Holy Scriptures?" (p. 8). The footnote here reads, "In North Carolina, to teach a slave to read or write, or to sell or give him any book (the Bible not excepted), is punished with 39 lashes, or imprisonment, if the offender be a free negro; but if a white, then with a fine of 200 dollars."32 pages.
