What will it cost someone to be a true Christian? "It will cost him his self-righteousness. He must cast away all pride and high thoughts, and conceit of his own goodness. He must be content to go to heaven as a poor sinner, saved only by free grace, and owing all to the merit and righteousness of another." - J.C. Ryle
The Puritan Hard Drive - Best Reference Tool Ever!
You will be floored by this
product. Amazing!
- John Hendryx, Monergism
Books
In the history of the church's sanctification I don't believe there has been a more valuable extra-biblical resource and tool than the Puritan Hard Drive.
It holds some of the most priceless Reformed works of God-centered and Christ-glorifying truth that were ever penned.
Most students, ministers and scholars of the Bible would never personally acquire even half the literal number of books on the Puritan Hard Drive, much less the extreme caliber of its contents.
In God's providence modern day Christians have been chosen to be the recipients of both a theological and practical blessing. May we not squander it.
- Matthew McMahon, Ph.D. A Puritan's Mind
I want you to know that I have enjoyed my Puritan Hard Drive immensely.
I simply could not have imagined such a resource before getting my hands on it!
To have that much information from a consistent, biblical, orthodox, and gospel-centered point of view is simply astonishing.
Anyone who admires the Puritans simply must have the Puritan Hard Drive.
From Pastors to Ph.D. candidates, there is simply nothing else out there that puts so much at your fingertips.
What an amazing tool for pastors... thank you for your work.
Soli Deo Gloria!
- Dr. Voddie Baucham, Jr., Grace Family Baptist Church (Spring, TX) http://www.sermonaudio.com/go/38367 and http://www.gracefamilybaptist.net
The Puritan Hard Drive is an exquisite piece of work.
The purchaser of this fine product will have at his fingertips more of the best Reformed literature than he can probably ever get around to reading.
Truly, if a Christian wants to invest wisely in his own growth, this is the best investment he can make at this time.
More than highly recommended!
- Justin Rawson, Gospel Covenant Publications
The Puritan Hard Drive is one amazing resource.
When I was full-time at seminary, we had a superb theological library. But for access to the Puritan classics a special trip was necessary to visit the Puritan collection at Regent College on the UBC campus. If I had had this Puritan Hard Drive, no such trips would have been needed.
Never before have ordinary pastors, teachers and students had access to such a wealth of rare sermons, classic theology and commentaries.
This will blow your mind.
- Pastor Joe Haynes (BC, Canada) http://www.keruxai.com or http://historicism.com/blog/?p=378
Wow!
The Puritan Hard Drive is fantastic!
Most commercial theological software packages allow you to search 18th - 20th century public domain books or charge premium prices for materials under current copyright. But for spiritual richness and depth of insight, who can match the Reformation and Post-Reformation Puritan classics? The ones available in PDF form scattered around the Internet would take hundreds of hours to locate and download. And, for ease and speed of search, the Puritan Hard Drive is frankly ingenious.
For pennies per resource, you even provide a collection of outstanding MP3s and a handy portable hard-drive with ample available space.
What a gift to Christ's church!
I love my Puritan Hard Drive!
- D.M. (California)
Still Waters Revival Books has performed an astonishing feat in pulling together a massive collection of books and other resources.
Let me tell you how absolutely fantastic the Puritan Hard Drive really is.
This is a treasure trove for a local church pastor.
The search ability is beyond my expectation.
I was just on the island of Iona where Columba established a missionary outpost sending evangelists all over Britain. Searching the hard drive for "Columba" added much to my understanding of this great leader through the eyes of Spurgeon and many others.
Thank you so much... for going to the trouble to make this available.
I am greatly improved by it and I anticipate the pace of worldwide reformation to be improved as well.
I blogged about it here: http://www.ncfic.org/weblogmodule/view/id/805/src/@random493e73d2154bd/
Below is the blog post from the link above:
On my way across the ocean to study the reformation with Doug Phillips, I did not have a suitcase of books as I usually do. I was lamenting that fact at the airline ticket counter and my daughter Claudia said to me, "Papa, close your eyes and step into the new world." Well, let me confess: on my computer I have approximately 13,000 puritan and reformed books which I have acquired through my son downloading ebooks and a gigantic collection put together by Reg Barrow from Still Waters Revival Books. I am now like Abdul Kassem Ismael, Grand Vizier of Persia who, in the tenth century, carried his library with him wherever he went. The 117,000 volumes were carried by 400 camels which were trained to walk in alphabetical order.

"I

It is the most amazing collection of works I
know of in one package to date.
In
my opinion, it far surpasses Ages Software and their collections.*
The
Puritan and Reformed material presented on these CDs is exceptional.
I
am continually amazed at the depth and breadth of information in both
collections, and the rarity of works that I now have at my fingertips.
You

* It is SWRB's
opinion that Ages has done an excellent job in making various Reformed works
available on CD, so much so that we also distribute a number of their CDs at
discounts. Thus, please don't make more out of our publishing this comment than
is warranted, as this is a comment we received from one of our customers and it
expresses his opinion. As for Ages' work, we rejoice whenever the truth is
published, whether through others or through SWRB (as we play only a very small
part in the revival of classic Reformation, Puritan and Covenanter thought that
is now taking place worldwide through God's marvelous grace). The publication
of the best Reformers and Puritans of the past is one of the greatest needs of
our time, as this extends the blessings that come through faithful preachers
and authors into our day and into the future. Lord willing, the growth in the
publishing of faithful works from the past will help stem the tide of the great
declension and unfaithfulness which we are now witnessing all around us, even
(sadly) among many churches that still call themselves "Presbyterian"
and/or "Reformed." So please pray together with us that our Lord will
multiple the number of faithful publishers and publications, and that He will
give many the heart to stand for the truth no matter the consequences (as He
has done for our faithful forefathers, who resisted Satan and sin unto blood
and even to martyrdom in many cases). -- RB.
"SWRB's
Puritan and Reformation CD libraries are an invaluable source for the study of
the history and theology of classic Reformation theology. The collection is
remarkable not only for depth of content, but also for the rarity of many of
the works. Most seminary libraries will not have even a percentage of the works
available on these CD-ROMs. I cannot imagine anyone working in Reformation /
historical theology that would not want to use the Puritan and Reformed
libraries!"

"I
just received your CD collection. One bit of advice: you should instruct your
customers to take about 1 week off just to peruse the tables of contents for
these CD's, followed by another week off, in order to recover from the
state of shock in which they will find themselves.
In
all seriousness, this collection is almost impossible to describe. It has to be
seen to be believed. As a pastor, my library has just increased
dramatically.
As a Ph.D. student in Puritan and Post-Reformation studies, I have immediate
access to many of the same works for which I would normally need to access
through rare book rooms of theological libraries.
Thank
you for this labor of love. Thank you for making it accessible, both
financially and technologically. May the Lord richly bless you for this service
to his people."

"You
all are doing a wonderful service by making all these materials so readily

rare book library with all of them in hand... I have found the CD set invaluable
as a tool of scholarship. So once again I commend you brothers for making it
available."

"It's
been several weeks now since I received the CDs and have had some time to
digest some of them. All I can say is, "WOW!" This is truly a
library like no other, and has already paid great dividends not only in my own
personal worship and study, but in my teaching as well. I first balked at the
price, but after seeing the vastness of the material, I almost feel as though
I'm robbing you!
I
pray that the Lord will allow you to get these materials into the hands of as
many ministers as possible."

SWRB CD comment from Dr. Moore:
This
collection of 62 CDs is a truly astounding accomplishment. There is nothing
like this available to the ordinary Christian on the whole face of the earth.
Now,
for the first time ever, ordinary Christians can have direct and near
effortless access to the very cream of Puritan and Reformed, as well as
Covenanter, literature.
These
books are often in fascinating first editions and many are electronically
linked and indexed for the first time. The ordinary Christian may here dig
into a simply staggering wealth of literature, from devotional and sermonic
material to technical and scholarly works. Even in the days of the Long Reformation
itself ordinary Christians didn't get to see this kind of library -- most
couldn't read for a start, and even those who could, would never have been able
to afford to buy even a hundredth part of the material on these CDs. Truly we
are without excuse!
And
the significance of this collection goes even beyond that. No longer do we have
to wait for modern Reformed publishing houses to predict that a particular
Reformation or Puritan book will be sufficiently popular to make it economical
to reprint, or to deem it "safe" enough to be let loose on the modern
evangelical church. Rather, we are now able to see for ourselves the whole
range of the Puritan and Reformed publishing enterprise, including views that
are usually suppressed by most modern devotees of "Puritan" piety!
Buy
these CDs while you can, and find out for yourself what the First and Second
Reformations were really all about! You'll be truly amazed, and, by God's
grace, will grow from being an ordinary Christian to being an extraordinary
one. What they used to say of the Puritan John Flavel's preaching, can be
said of these CDs: they are "hissing hot"!

"This
side of eternity I'll never be able to repay the favor you have done mankind by
bringing these... CDs together.
The
first week of reading I grew more as a Christian reading those rich, pure
Gospel Commentators than I have in 18 years of Christian life. After reading some of
the Puritan CDs I have to get the Reformation set if it kills me. A fire is
burning within me. These... CDs are liable to start a revival fire unseen in
any generation... the Gospel in its pure form is seen in these... CDs.
Sir,
I cant say enough. What a treasure! I'll never be able to repay you this side
of heaven, but when we get there I am sure you will see the rich fruits of your
labor. God bless you for not being money hungry but wanting to see Christians
grow in the Lord... I love you even though we have never met, you have
helped me in my Christian walk tremendously with these... CDs.
I
am not bragging on the flesh, I am just giving honor where honor is due. The
Holy Ghost will take these CDs and light a fire unseen and unheard of. God
bless you all at Still Waters."

I am amazed at the quality and quantity of
the literature...
I
cannot imagine any other single thing being done by any man or group of men in
the earth today that is of such extensive, present, and enduring value as
this CD work is.
God
be praised that he uses sickly and weak men to forward his kingdom, that the
work may not be mistaken to be wrought by the might of men, but by his Spirit.

Another Look at Heidegger's
Nazism (1994)
Contains interesting observations on the corporate identity of civil bodies
(moral person), the place of the intellectual class (responsibility) and how
the fear of characterizing events in terms of right and wrong (testimony)
creates a moral vacuum which opens the door to tyranny. The idolatrous,
humanistic notions of the Nazi's are also shown to be compatible with Heidegger's
philosophy (and his actions).

Baptists and Infant Baptism
(1996)
Wagner was converted in a fundamental Baptist church and is well acquainted
with the Baptist views of baptism. Here he has produced a peaceable plea to
those who still hold the views he once embraced. In it he deals with the
meaning, subjects and mode of baptism; tracing the steps by which he became
convinced of the Apostolic/Reformation position. This is an easy to read introduction
to this important topic.

The Declaration of
Repudiation: A Public Testimony Against Modern North American Evangelicalism
(1996)
Wagner shows how modern Evangelicals have been swallowed up by the beast
(civilly and ecclesiastically -- and especially in regard to doctrine) in that
they now deny the most important biblical attainments of the Protestant
Reformation. Arminianism (the decisionalistic free-will heresy) and man-made innovations
in worship are rampant. If the Reformers were around today they would testify,
as Wagner does, against modern evangelicalism -- in that the modern
evangelicals have adopted more of the basic tenets of Rome than of the
Reformation. "(T)he Scriptural theological attainments of the Reformation
have been abandoned by modern North American Evangelicalism; and to make
matters worse, an unscriptural disdain for doctrine has immunized many
evangelicals from a recovery of Reformation truth," states Wagner. This
book seeks to repudiate and remedy the deformation of evangelicalism.

The End of Canada: Divergent
Political Cultures and Identities as Centrifugal Forces (1996)
Demonstrates how a lack of cultural and ethical uniformity inevitably leads to
division. Looks at the Quebec situation, the Aboriginal political culture and
the Reform party. The intolerance of the "tolerationists" -- that is,
their intolerance of fundamentalist groups (other than themselves) -- is also
touched on.

Paleopresbyterianism Versus
Neopresbyterianism (1996)
Defines the major differences between "paleo" or old Presbyterianism
(the position held at the Westminster Assembly, 1648) and "neo" or
new (modern) Presbyterianism. Maintains and proves that the two major
differences are found in the form of subscription (whether complete, as with
the "paleo's," or loose [i.e. allowing for scruples], as with the
"neo's") to the Westminster standards and in whether or not the
Solemn League and Covenant is thought to be binding today (in its moral
equity). Wagner also demonstrates how the neopresbyterians have turned away
from the original Presbyterian position. The implications of this introductory
booklet are far reaching and revolutionary and could easily shake the prevalent
neopresbyterian establishment (PCA, OPC, etc.) to its very core.

WAGNER, Dr. MICHAEL G.
A Presbyterian Political
Manifesto: Presbyterianism and Civil Government (1995)
Using citations from great Presbyterians of the
past such as Rutherfurd, Gillespie and Knox, and the thoughts of modern day
Reformers and Reconstructionists, Wagner demonstrates how the impossibility of neutrality
in civil matters leads inescapably to established religion. He then builds the
Biblical case for establishmentarianism and deals with some of the hard
questions regarding religious liberty and toleration (in such a state). He also shows how the Westminster Confession of Faith should be the doctrinal basis for the state, as well as the
church (as it is a faithful summary of biblical teaching). Contains a great bibliography. This is the best short
introduction dealing with this subject. Wagner has completed his Doctorate in
political science at a major Canadian University.

Private Versus Public
Education: The Alberta Debate (1995)
Though focusing on Alberta, the principles dealt with in this book can be applied
throughout Canada, and in any other nations where home/private education is
taking place. Describes the historical background and major episodes in this
debate and then assesses the three major arguments made against private
schools. Concludes by showing the superiority of private education and exposing
the self serving nature of the public educator's agenda. This is Wagner's
Master's Thesis.

or, A Short History of the Puritan Reformed Church of Edmonton (1996)
Wagner, who has a PhD in political science, traces the theological journey of
the PRC of Edmonton -- from a Reconstructionist congregation to its present
adoption of the covenanted attainments of the second Reformation. He notes
where and why Reconstruction has been helpful to the PRC and also shows where
and why it has been a hindrance to further Reformation. The paradigms Wagner
deals with (in his characteristically irenic style) should be familiar to most
Reformed Christians -- making this book an exceedingly helpful introduction to
some much larger and more complex areas of thought. The major differences
between the testimony of the Reformers (of the 16th and 17th centuries) and the
testimony of the modern Reconstructionists is laid out and contrasted in an
easy to understand format. Having been a Reconstructionist, Wagner has insights
others dealing with Reconstructionism (from the outside) have completely
missed. Furthermore, many modern Reconstructionist critiques are miserably
flawed and full of heresy and poor scholarship themselves -- thus they lack
credibility among those who seek a fair assessment of Christian Reconstruction.
This can not be said of this book and we hope that it will encourage
Reconstructionists and non-Reconstructionists alike to return to the old paths
of the Apostles and our Presbyterian and Reformed forefathers. Books like this
(and his previous works) place Wagner among a growing body of young authors,
all well studied in theology and history, who are now calling for a third
Reformation.

Heresies of Westcott and
Hort: As Seen In Their Own Writings (1979)
"Regardless of what side of the Westcott and Hort textual criticism of the
traditional Greek text which underlies our Authorized (King James) version of
1611, I believe it is of the utmost importance to see once and for all that the
leaders in the textual revolution which unseated the traditional received Greek
text from its place of undisputed prominence for over 15 centuries, were not,
as most of the evangelical and fundamentalist world today believes,
fundamentalists, or even orthodox in many of their beliefs. It is my personal
belief that this heterodoxy on their part blinded their intellects, and
prejudiced them adversely and unfairly in the textual theories of the Greek New
Testament" writes Waite. Chapter one includes background information to
this debate, with the following chapters dealing with the various theological
heresies of Westcott and Hort. In these chapters we find numerous heresies
involving the person and work of Christ, the doctrine of salvation (including
proof that Westcott embraced Universalism and various other errors on the
atonement) and errors on the doctrines of Inspiration and Inerrancy (plus much
more). Though some of Waite's own Fundamentalist/Premillennial confusion is
included in this book, there is much research and information that can be gleaned
from this title which is useful. So chew up the meat and spit out the bones. 42
pages.

Scottish Church History
WALKER, PATRICK
(Compiler)
Biographia Presbyteriana (2 volumes, 1827
edition)
Volume
one covers
the lives and remarkable testimonies of Alexander Peden (also know as Peden the Prophet, because of the extraordinary [and always accurate]
prophecies that God gave him throughout his life), John Semple, John
Welwoold and Richard Cameron. Volume two covers
the lives of Donald Cargill, Walter Smith, and James Renwick. Walker's
advantage in writing of these men, as Hay Fleming points out, can be seen in
that
he lived in the times of which he wrote, that he personally knew many of the
Covenanters and martyrs of whom he wrote, and that he was himself a shrewd
observer and was endowed with a tenacious memory.
Walker
himself had endured imprisonment and torture for Christ's Covenanted cause and
Burton writes that his "unadorned descriptions of suffering and heroism
convey a lesson to the heart which no genius or learning could
strengthen."
Pertaining
to Peden's prophetic gifts, note the following two testimonies (and Walker includes a
great number of similar accounts in this book),
In
the year 1689, after the murdering of Mr. Cameron, and these Worthies with him
at Airdsmoss, he (Peden--RB) was near Machline in the Shire of Air. One Robert
Brown of Crosshouse, who lived near the Newmills, and one Hugh Pinaneve Factor
to the Earl of Lowdon, stabled their horse in that house where he was, and went
to a fair in Machline: And in the afternoon, when they came to take their
horse, they got a drink; and in the time of it, the said Hugh, a wicked wretch
both in principle and practice, brake out in railing against the sufferers
(i.e. the faithful Covenanters--RB), particularly against Mr. Cameron. Mr.
Peden being in another room, over-hearing all, was so grieved, that he came to
the Chamber-door, and said to the said Hugh, Sir,
hold your peace; ere Twelve a clock you shall know what for a man Mr. Cameron
was; God shall punish that blasphemous mouth and cursed tongue of yours, in
such a manner as shall be astonishing and affrighting to all that shall see
you; and shall set you up as a beacon to all railing Rabshakehs. Robert Brown, knowing Mr. Peden, hasted to his
horse, being persuaded that Mr. Peden's words would not fall to the ground, and
fearing that some mischief might befall him for being in the said Hugh's
company. They rode hard home; Robert went to his own house, and Hugh to the
Earl's house; and casting off his boots, he was
struck with such sickness and pain through his body, with his mouth so wide,
and his tongue hanging so far out in a fearful manner, they sent for the said
Robert, being used to take blood: he got some blood of him, but all in vain; he
died before midnight. The said Robert, an old man, told me this
passage, when in prison together (p. 51).
"...the
same night after this discourse, while about family worship, about ten or
eleven of the clock, explaining the portion of Scripture he (Peden--RB) read,
he suddenly halted, and hearkened, and said three times over, 'What's this I hear?' and hearkened again a little time,
and clapt his hands and said, 'I hear a dead shot at the throne of Britain; let
him go yonder, he has been a black sight to these lands, especially to poor
Scotland; we're well quit of him; there has been many a wasted prayer wearied
on him.' And it was concluded by all, the same hour, in the same night, that
unhappy man Charles the II died. I had this account from John
Muirhead and others, who were present, and confirmed in the truth of them by
some worthy Christians, when I was in Ireland" (p. 56).
There
are few things like the life stories of faithful Christians who have been
persecuted and even martyred for faithfulness to the whole counsel of God to
stir the soul to greater diligence and zeal in all areas of holiness. Indexed, over 700 pages.

somewhat muted "Covenanter" stance. 15 pages.

"If Peden was the John the Baptist of the Covenant, Renwick
was John the Evangelist," writes Ker in his introduction.
"There is no doubt that these courageous men were instrumental in carrying
the covenanted testimony through some very dark and trying days -- and each
blessed of God with extraordinary gifts. Their work and suffering (and that of
many others) is commemorated in a stanza from a poem quoted at the head of the
section on Peden. It reads:
"Speed on, thou Covenanted cause!
God's blessing upon thee!
Baptized in Scotland's dearest blood albeit thou needs must be:
Christ came not to send peace on earth, only may that red rain,
Still fructify thy living seed, till His return again!"
"In that memorable 50 years' struggle (1638-1688), there
is gathered a mass of religious intensity, sacrifice and scholarship, such as
perhaps no other period of Scottish history can excel. It is
estimated that 18,000 people suffered poverty, torture, banishment, or death.
Truly the hills were drenched with the blood of the martyrs. Scotland has had
two Reformations -- the first in the 16th century, associated with the name of
John Knox; the second in the 17th century, enriched by a galaxy of famous
men" (Cameron, Peden the Prophet, p. 1).
This book deals will two of the
"stars" in this galaxy. Alexander Peden
was universally known as the Prophet of the Covenant. For 23 years,
this exiled minister roamed the Scottish country side to evade persecution Ker
called him the "John the Baptist of the Scottish Covenant."
Renwick was the last, and among
the most eloquent, of the martyrs of the "killing times." Ker writes
that "[t]he letters of Renwick remind one not
unfrequently of those of Rutherford."
Stirring history full of
edifying truth, not only concerning personal piety and faithful endurance
amidst much suffering, but also as a reminder as to how much we owe the
Scottish Covenanters for their testimony to biblically based civil and
religious order, purity of worship, and an uncompromising love for the truth.
Includes some letters and sermons by Peden and some letters from Renwick. 208
pages.

Get books into your houses, when you have not the
spring near you, then get some water into your
cisterns; so when you have not that wholesome preaching that you
desire, good books are cisterns that
hold the water of life in them to refresh you; so, when you find a chillness

warm clothes, get those good books that may acquaint you with such truths as may warm and

A Body of Divinity Contained
in Sermons Upon the Westminster Assembly's Catechism
The
first book published by the Banner of Truth Trust, this has been one of the
best sellers and consistently the most useful and influential of their
publications.
There are several reason for this:
1. The subject of the book. It deals with foremost doctrinal and
experimental truths of the Christian Faith.
2. The means of instruction used. It is based on the Westminster
Assembly's Shorter Catechism, in which the main principles of
Christianity that lie scattered in the Scriptures are brought together and set
forth in the form of question and answer. This Catechism is unsurpassed for its
'terse exactitude of definition" and logical elaboration' of the
fundamentals.
3. The style of the author. Watson conveys his thorough
doctrinal and experimental knowledge of the truth in such an original, concise,
pithy, pungent, racy, rich and illustrative style that he is rightly regarded
as the most readable of the Puritans (backcover).

two" of Watson's work on the Shorter Catechism see The Ten

transcendent priviledge
of those that love God and are
savingly called (1663)
Free MP3 at http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?SID=61606111052
There are two things, which I have always
looked upon as difficult. The one is, to make the wicked sad; the other is, to
make the godly joyful. Dejection in the godly arises from a double spring:
either because their inward comforts are darkened, or their outward comforts
are disturbed. To cure both these troubles, I have put forth this ensuing
piece, hoping, by the blessing of God, it will buoy up their desponding hearts,
and make them look with a more pleasant aspect. I would prescribe them to take,
now and then, a little of this Cordial: all things work together for good to
them that love God. To know that nothing hurts the godly, is a matter of
comfort; but to be assured that all things which fall out shall co operate for
their good, that their crosses shall be turned into blessings, that showers of
affliction water the withering root of their grace and make it flourish more;
this may fill their hearts with joy till they run over.

The Ten Commandments
In this book Watson (c. 1620-1686) continues his
exposition of the Shorter Catechism drawn up by the Westminster Assembly. Watson
was one of the most popular preachers in London during the Puritan era... The series of three volumes, of which this is the second
(the Body of Divinity is first and
The Lord's Prayer third), makes an
ideal introduction to Puritan literature. There
are few matters about which the Puritans differ more from present-day
Christians than in their assessment of the importance of the ten commandments.
The commandments, they held, are the first thing in Christianity which the
natural man needs to be taught and they should be the daily concern of the
Christian to the last. In this book Watson examines the moral law as a whole
as well as bringing out the meaning and force of each particular commandment. In view of the important function of the law in
Christian life and evangelism, this is a most valuable volume (backcover).

The Church of Rome at the Bar
of History
The Church of Rome has long maintained that she is changeless in her message
and authority, standing from the first, and through the ages, by one faith.
William Webster analyses this claim and shows from the facts of history that
this claim is unfounded and that modern Roman Catholicism is not only different
from, but contrary to, what the early church fathers taught. Webster's writing
is not harsh, but rather warm as he writes with a heart-felt interest in the
welfare of the men and women who are now in a position which was once his own.

The Sufficiency of Scripture
Deals with such diverse issues as revelation, translation, creation, prophecy, and
the role of women in the church. Weeks provides careful analysis of the
biblical teaching in these areas, giving "depth criticism" of much of
the superficial and false thinking expressed in some contemporary discussions
of these questions.

The Great Gospel Summons to
Close with Christ Under the Pain of the Highest Rebellion Against the God of Heaven
(1676)
An evangelistic sermon on Isaiah 53:5, "But he was wounded for our
transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our
peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." Welsh, a
Covenanter, was ejected in 1662. After his ejection he almost immediately began
preaching in the fields (to as many as 10,000 hearers). He was also a great
grandson of John Knox and "in spite of his reputation, the frequency,
duration and public nature of his preaching, and a large price on his head,
Welsh was never apprehended and, retiring to London after Bothwell Bridge, died
in peace," writes David Lachman (Cameron, ed., Dictionary of Scottish
Church History & Theology,
p. 861). 32 pages.

Heartwork, Assurance and
National Judgement
Although Welwood focuses on personal sanctification, searching out the
differences between hypocrites and true believers, he does not leave national
issues untouched. He shows how God's anger builds in the life of backsliding
individuals, churches and nations and how sometimes faithful individuals are
swept away in the deluge that ensues as God's wrath is poured out upon the
earth. The situation in Scotland at the time of this sermon (c. 1678) provides
a perfect example illustrating this point. The forces of Antichrist (Royalist
and Prelatical) were hounding the faithful Covenanters and many were suffering
(even unto death) on account of their faithfulness to second Reformation
attainments and covenant engagements (in the battle for the crown rights of
King Jesus). At this point Welwood seeks to comfort and strengthen those saints
suffering under the hand of these wicked, persecuting, "incarnate
devils" -- as Welwood calls them. Occasional hearing, unlawful authorities
in church and state and neutrality in the cause of Christ are all sternly
rebuked. There is great edification here as this sermon encourages the
Christian in his unrelenting battle against sin and defection (individually and
in his duties relative to the church and state). This sermon is read (by Ruling
Elder Lyndon Dohms) from the book Sermons in Times of Persecution in
Scotland, by Suffers for the Royal Prerogatives of Jesus Christ ($19.99). Regarding the preacher, this
arresting account of one of Welwood's last sermons is recounted in Sermons
in Times of Persecution,
Preaching at Boulterhall, in Fife, from
the text, "not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many
noble are called," he remarked toward the conclusion, "If that
unhappy Prelate Sharp die the death of all men, God never spoke by me"
(Sharp was an ex-Resolutioner turned Prelate, who became archbishop of St.
Andrews -- from his position as President of the notorious Court of High
Commission he played a major role in the merciless persecution and slaughter of
the Covenanters -- RB). A servant of the Archbishop was one of the audience,
having come with a brother with whom he had been sojourning who lived in the
neighbourhood. The livery of the servant attracted the notice of the preacher,
who concluded, and rightly too, that he was in the Prelate's service. Having,
after the sermon was ended, desired this man to stand up, as he had a message
to deliver to him, Welwood proceeded to say:--"I desire you, before all these
witnesses, when thou goest home, to tell thy master that his treachery,
tyranny, and wicked life are near an end, and his death shall be at once
sudden, surprising, and bloody; and as he hath thirsted after and shed the
blood of the saints, he shall not go to his own grave in peace." When
Sharp was informed of these words of the minister he made light of them, but
his wife said, "I advise you to take more notice of that, for I hear that
these men's words are not in vain" (pp. 340-341).
Of course, in 1679, a Covenanter
contingent of nine men providentially met with Sharp's coach on Magus Muir
(near St. Andrews). There they avenged (Acts 7:24) the death of so many of
their brethren (who were murdered at the hands of this merciless madman, Sharp)
and the Archbishop took up his eternal abode among the devils that deceived
him. These were trying times for the people of God and the sermons that these
dark days produced are unlike any others that you will likely hear or read.

"It
is amazing that any true evangelical Calvinist would ever quote John Wesley
with approval, either in speech or in writing," wrote the late Rev. J.P.
MacQueen, London. "He (Wesley-ed.) bitterly hated and rejected Calvinism,
while he taught a theory of justification practically identical with
sanctification.
His apologists have tried to persuade their readers that Wesley's
Sacramentalism was 'merely an Oxford phase, and that it disappeared when he
entered upon active evangelistic effort.' His treatise on Baptism, which he
published in 1756, proves the contrary: 'By water, then, as a means -- the
water of baptism -- we are regenerated or born again, whence it is also called
by the Apostle the washing of regeneration. Herein a principle of grace is
infused which will not be wholly taken away unless we quench the Holy Spirit of
God by long-continued wickedness.' If the foregoing quotation does not embody
the false doctrine of baptismal regeneration, one does not know what does. Wesley commended the
same so-called 'devotional literature' as the Oxford Tractarians, such as the
works of Romanists like Thomas a Kempis, Francois de Sales, and Cardinal Bona.
He even published the 'Introduction to a Devout Life' by Francois de Sales, the
sworn foe of Calvinism, in 1750. He advocated prayers for the dead,
justifying himself thus: 'Prayer for the dead, the faithful departed, in the
advocacy of which I conceive myself clearly justified.'" (Works, ed. 1872, IX. 55). The blessed departed
are beyond the need of the poor sin-stained prayers of the Church militant, for
they are perfect in holiness.

WESTMINSTER ASSEMBLY (John Wallis,
D.D., secretary)
A Brief and Easy Explanation
of the Shorter Catechism, Presented by the Assembly of Divines at Westminster,
to both Houses of Parliament, and by them Approved. Eighth edition, 1662.
John Wallis was
an English minister during the seventeenth century. According to James
Darling's Cyclopaedia Bibliographica
(http://www.swrb.com/catalog/D.htm), Wallis was one of the
secretaries to the Westminster Assembly in 1644.
Later, he became a professor at Oxford.
In a brief note
entitled "To the Reader" at the beginning of the piece, Wallis states
what he has done with the Catechism to make it
easier to understand:
That
which I have done in it, is only the adding of those shorter questions, which
are answered by Yes, or No, standing directly opposite to them, whereby several
particulars of the large Answer are distinctly pointed to, and briefly explained
to the apprehension of weak capacities, which they would be apt either not to
observe, or not to understand, if they did only learn that large Answer by
rote. All which is done without charging the learners memory: for to answer
these short questions, is not so much an exercise of the memory, as of the
judgment, being able to distinguish between the truth and falsehood; assenting
to the one, and denying the other.

WESTMINSTER ASSEMBLY OF DIVINES
The Directory For
Family-Worship (1647) and The Directory for the Publick Worship of God (1645)
It
doesn't get any better than this! These are the documents approved by the General
Assembly of the Church of Scotland in her purest days. Reproduced in large
print for easy reading. The Directory for Family Worship lays out the Biblical
path to piety and uniformity in secret and private (family) worship, for godly
edification. The Directory for Public Worship aimed at fulfilling the
Reformation goals of covenanted uniformity in religion between the churches of
Christ in the kingdoms of Scotland, England and Ireland.
"Behind its production lay extensive discussion of the
proper application of the Puritan regulative principle reducing elements of
acceptable worship to what is prescribed or necessarily deducible from
Scripture alone... It contains perhaps the finest brief description of
expository preaching to be found in the English language" (Cameron, ed., Dictionary
of Scottish Church History, p. 864).
During the days
of the second Reformation Gillespie notes that "(t)he parliament hath
also, by their ordinance dated the 23d of August 1645, imposed the Directory of
Worship under certain mulcts and penalties to be inflicted upon such as do not
observe it, or preach or write against it" ("Miscellany
Questions" in Gillespie's Works, p. 87). Oh, for the days of comprehensive,
full-orbed, God honoring Reformation like that again! An indispensable document
for those who are Presbyterian's. However, it can also be very helpful to all
those who seek to worship the LORD in spirit and in truth, regardless of
denominational affiliation. These two fine
historic documents have yet to be equalled in terms of the intent and purpose
for which they were originally produced.

WESTMINSTER ASSEMBLY
The Reasons Presented by the
Dissenting Brethren Against Certain Propositions Concerning Presbyterial
Government. And the Proofs of them Voted by the Assembly of Divines, sitting by
authority of Parliament, at Westminster. Together With the Answer of the
Assembly of Divines to those Reasons of Dissent (1648)
It is
interesting to note, as Hetherington points out in his History of the
Westminster Assembly of Divines (p. 220), that,
(i)n their answer, the Assembly Divines seem almost to have been
ashamed to analyze and expose the weak sophistry of the Dissenting Brethren's
argument... but by availing themselves of the concessions made by the
Independents in the course of their own illustrations, they completely
overthrow the whole Congregational theory.
Regarding the
book itself Hetherington writes,
These
reasons of Dissent, and the Answers by the Assembly, occupied the attention of
that venerable body during the conclusion of the year 1644, and the early part
of the year 1645; and when fully completed, both the reasons and the answers
were submitted to the consideration of the Parliament for a considerable time,
and when the discussions of the Assembly had terminated, an order was issued by
the House of Lords, on the 24th of January 1648 (or 1647, according to their
style), that these reasons and answers should be printed from the papers in the
hands of Adoniram Byfield, one of the Assembly's scribes, after having been
inspected by Messrs Goodwin and Whittaker, to secure their genuineness and
authenticity; and they were published in the same year... In the year 1652, the
same publication received a new title-page, and was called The Grand Debate concerning Presbytery and
Independency, by the Assembly of Divines convened at Westminster by authority
of Parliament (History of the Westminster Assembly of Divines, pp. 221-222).
In short, this
is a definitive answer to the best the Independents had to offer. This
photocopy is taken from what had previously been Samuel Miller's personal copy
of this title. 314 pages.

Shorter Catechism with
Scripture Proofs
Catechisms have been greatly employed in the Church since the days of the
Apostles. A great revival of their use took place at the Reformation. None
rivals the Westminster Assembly's Shorter Catechism, for extensive use,
succinctness, or clarity. Richard Baxter said of it in his day, "It is the
best Catechism I ever saw -- a most excellent sum of the Christian faith and
doctrine, and a fit test to try the orthodoxy of its teachers." Excellent
for training youth, it has been used with profit starting as early as three
years of age.

WESTMINSTER DIVINES
The Westminster Confession of
Faith
"The product of Puritan
conflict," stated Shedd, reaching "a perfection of statement never
elsewhere achieved."
"All that learning the most profound
and extensive, intellect the most acute and searching, and piety the most
sincere and earnest, could accomplish, was thus concentrated in the Westminster
Assembly's Confession of Faith, which may be safely termed the most perfect
statement of Systematic Theology ever framed by the Christian Church,"
writes Hetherington in The History of the Westminster Assembly of Divines (p. 345,
emphasis added).
"These are worth an hundred
victories on the battle field. We do not fear to say of them that they are the
finest transfusion into uninspired language of the sublime, awful, blessed
truths of the Word of God which the Church has as yet been honored to make...
Never can the Covenanters be robbed of the immortal honor of having, while at
the summit of their power, published this great principle to the world"
noted J.A. Wylie, in praise of the Westminster Standards (cited in Johnston's Treasury
of the Scottish Covenant, p. 101).
"As truly as in the cases of the Nicene
and Chalcedonian formularies, the Westminster Standards mark an epoch in the
history of human reflection on the truths of the gospel--an epoch in the
attainment and registry of doctrinal truth; and as truly in the one case as in
the other the statements they give of the truths that fall in their sphere are
scientifically final. All attempts at restatement must either repeat their
definitions or fall away from the purity of their conceptions or the justness
of their language." (Benjamin B. Warfield, "The Significance of the
Westminster Standards as a Creed," 1897)
Concerning the Westminster
Shorter Catechism, which is one of the items also included in this book,
Mitchell, in his Westminster Assembly: Its History and Standards, notes:
"...it is a thoroughly Calvinistic and Puritan catechism, the ripest fruit
of the Assembly's thought and experience, maturing and finally fixing the
definitions of theological terms to which Puritanism for half a century had
been leading up and gradually coming closer and closer to in its legion of
catechisms" (p. 431).
Richard Baxter said of Westminster
Shorter Catechism, "It is the best Catechism I ever saw -- a most excellent
sum of the Christian faith and doctrine, and a fit test to try the orthodoxy of
its teachers."
The Westminster Confession of
Faith (WCF) is the greatest of all the creeds of the Christian church. The church of Christ
cannot be creedless and live. Especially in an age of doubt and confusion, it
is her duty to define and proclaim the one true Reformed faith. Nowhere has the Reformed church done this
so effectively as in the Westminster family of documents.
This book represents Reformed
thinking at its purest and best. It was intended, as part of the covenanted
reformation taking place during its compilation, to be adopted as the binding
confessional standard for every individual, family, school, court, church, and
legislature in the British Isles -- and all the King's dominions (including
Canada, the United States, Australia, etc.). The Westminster standards were
produced in fulfilment of the Solemn League and Covenant, an international
covenant with God and some of the most powerful nations on earth at the time of
its publication. This covenant and these
standards were produced to provide the blueprint for all levels of society to
come into obedience to the Word of God in its fullness. Study the
documents contained in this book carefully and we think that you will see why
this same goal should be covenanted to by all serious minded followers of the
Lord Jesus Christ.
This is the definitive edition of the WCF and
its many related documents. It contains Manton's "Epistle to the
Reader," "The Larger Catechism," "The Shorter
Catechism," "The Sum of Saving Knowledge," "The National
Covenant (1638)," "The Solemn League and Covenant (1643),"
"Acknowledgment of Publick Sins and Breaches of the Covenant (1648),"
"The Directory for the Publick Worship of God (1645)," "The Form
of Presbyterial Church Government (1645)," "The Directory for Family
Worship (1647)," an extensive index and more! "Every effort has been
made, by sparing no expense or labour... to render it the Standard
Edition," note the publishers. An essential book for every Christian home,
church, and state! Next to the Bible itself, no
other book can furnish you with as much necessary spiritual information.

WESTMINSTER DIVINES & OTHER
PURITANS (Gouge, Gataker, et al.)
The Westminster Annotations
and Commentary on the Whole Bible (6 volumes, 1657)
The original title read: "Annotations Upon all
the Books of the Old and New Testament: This Third, above the First and Second,
Edition so enlarged, As they make an entire Commentary on the Sacred
Scriptures: The like never before published in English. Wherein the Text is
Explained, Doubts Resolved, Scripture Parallel'd, and Various Readings
observed; By the Labour of certain Learned Divines thereunto appointed, and
therein employed, As is expressed in the Preface." The preface (found in
the first volume) recounts not only a short history
of the English Bible, but sets forth the great advantage to true Religion which
accrues (contrary to the mysticism of the Anabaptists and the
anti-intellectualism of the modern backsliding church) when faithful notes are
"bound in" with the Scripture text -- this bringing forth
nothing different than the effect generated (through God's grace) by faithful
preaching, faithful commentaries, faithful creeds, faithful covenants, faithful
confessions, etc. Pointing out that this blessing from God was never more
obvious than in the case of the Geneva Bible ($299.00, leather
hardcover) and its marginal notes (and that the people knew it to be so when
they were left with Bibles without annotations honoring to God), the preface
further states, "hence were divers of the Stationers and Printers of
London induced (by the people--RB) to petition the committee of the Honourable
House of Commons, for licence to print the Geneva notes upon the Bible, or
that some notes might be fitted to the new translation: which was accordingly
granted, with an order for review and correction of those of the Geneva
edition, by leaving out such of them as there was cause to dislike, by clearing
those that were doubtful, and by supplying such as were defective. For which purpose
letters were directed to some of us from the Chair of the Committee for
Religion (in 1648--RB), and personal invitations to others, to undertake and
divide the task among us, and so cometh in our part, whereof we shall give the
world a true and just account in that which followeth." The detailed
account which follows in the preface is fascinating, mentioning, among many
other things, the divines' "use of... the Dutch Bibles... set forth
at... Holland, by order of the States."
The diligence given, the energy expended, the
obvious humility, and the fearful trembling before God's Word which is evident
in these commentators makes this truly a classic Puritan work -- a work of great
value! Just knowing, as Barker points out, that this commentary was "prepared mostly by Westminster divines, by order of
Parliament, at the time of the Assembly" (Puritan Profiles, p. 37), certainly
bodes well for the level of scholarship it contains. Moreover, with Gouge, one
of the most respected English Covenanters at the Assembly playing a major role,
the thoughtful student of Scripture and history ought to take note: for a theological feast of mature Puritan thought surely
awaits those that sup at this table. Esteemed, by the mid-1640's,
"as the father of the London Ministers," Gouge was elected as Assessor
for the Westminster Assembly on Nov. 25, 1647. His detractors sometimes called
him an "arch Puritan" (cf. Ibid., p. 35). Dr. Gouge's
"share of the useful work consisted of Kings, and the subsequent books
down to Esther, inclusive" (Smith, Select Memoirs of English and
Scottish Divines,
p. 534). Most of the others chosen to this work had similar credentials, though
not all exhibit equal proficiency and some later backslid from attainments
reached at this point. Nevertheless, when the commentators were first chosen,
these Annotations were produced by some of the most
qualified English Puritans -- as a historical high water mark for Puritan
scholarship was beginning to crest. Furthermore, in prosecuting this
work the divines note, "therefore we have put ourselves to much more pains
(for many months) in consulting with many more authors, in several languages,
than at first we thought of, that (for the propriety of the original text, for
pertinent and profitable variety of versions, for consonancy of parallel Scriptures,
and for perspicuity in clearing of the darkest places) we might bring in such
observations, as might not only serve to edify the ordinary reader, but might
likewise gratify our brethren of the ministry, at least such among them, as
have not the means to purchase, or leisure to pursue, so many books, as (by
order of the Committee) we were furnished with all, for the finishing of the
work, committed to our hands" (preface). As the work wore on, however, it
became apparent that the original intention (of printing these annotations as
marginal notes in the Bible) would no longer fit the scope and length of
commentary that had been produced. Thus, the notes were not added to the
Scriptures directly, but rather published as a separate commentary (which we
are offering here) -- except that we have divided the work into six volumes
rather than the original two, because of logistics.
Brook calls this a "useful work" and says
of its authors that "several of them were celebrated puritans" (Lives
of the Puritans,
vol. 3, p. 221n). Spurgeon comments that it "contains valuable
remarks" and that "the work is probably less esteemed than it should
be" (Commenting and Commentaries). In "A Narrative of His Life and
Death" prefixed to volume one of Gouge's three volume commentary on
Hebrews ($99.00 HP, $59.99 P), we also find this note, "He was likewise
chosen by a Committee of Parliament, among others, to make Annotations upon the
Bible, being well-known to be a judicious interpreter of Scripture. How well he
hath performed his trust is evident to all that read the annotations from the
beginning of the first book of Kings unto Job, which was his part."
Furthermore, Neal,
in his history, furnishes us with a helpful (though partial) list of each of
the specific authors and books of the Bible they worked on in the Annotations.
He writes, "Those with asterisks were not of the assembly. Rev. Mr. Ley,
subdean of Chester (The commentary on the five books of Moses), Dr. Gouge (1
& 2 Kings, 1 & 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther), *Mr. Meric
Casaubon (The Psalms), Mr Francis Taylor (Proverbs), Dr. Reynolds
(Ecclesiastes), *Mr Smallwood, recommended by archbishop Usher (Solomon's
Song), Mr. Gataker (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations), *Mr. Pemberton in the
first edition and *Bishop Richardson in the second (Ezekiel, Daniel, and the
smaller Prophets), Mr. Ley (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John), Dr. D. Featly... (St.
Paul's Epistles). There were two other persons concerned in this work, who
might probably have the other parts of Scripture allotted them, not here
mentioned, viz. Mr. Downham and Mr. Reading" (pp. 504-505).
Additionally, as should be evident, the
Annotations were not, strictly speaking, a work of the Westminster Assembly per
se, but rather a work primarily by men who attended the Westminster Assembly -- including a few
others chosen to this task by Parliament. Notwithstanding, we thought it
prudent to title this work in accord with one of the primary names by which it
has come to be commonly known (i.e "The Westminster Annotations"). As
with much of the literature that was produced by those attending the
Westminster Assembly, or by those sympathetic to their work, the modern reader has much to gain by carefully
considering the words of these spiritual giants. This work is no exception
and we pray that this newly published edition will strengthen and unite the
church, turn individuals to righteousness, uplift the family, and help direct
the nations to the covenanting love that surrounded the work at the Westminster
Assembly in the seventeenth century -- and in all this bring glory to God! 2383 (8.5" X
11") pages.

apostate (now) Roman Catholic apologist, Scott Hahn, in his book Rome
Sweet Home: Our Journey to Catholicism, speaks of the extensive reading of pro-
and anti-Romanist literature he had done as he was led down the road to Rome
from modern Calvinism. Among other reasons he lists for his declension, one
major factor was what he saw to be the lack of cogent reply from modern
"Protestants," including Dr. John Gerstner, to the arguments of the
Roman Catholic Church. Notwithstanding that there are serious reasons to doubt Hahn's
credibility and integrity (for example, he paints out Luther and Calvin to
teach only a formal, "courtroom language" view of justification:
"Luther and Calvin explained this [justification] exclusively in terms of
courtroom language. But I was beginning to see that, far more than simply being
a judge, God was our Father. Far more than simply being criminals, we were
runaways. Far more than the New Covenant being made in a courtroom, it was
fashioned by God in a family room." -- p. 30; for refutation of this
ridiculous, slanderous caricature, see Luther's Small Catechism, question on "Our
Father who art in heaven;" Calvin's Institutes, Book III, 20.36ff;
Robert Dabney's Systematic Theology, p. 627; Westminster Confession of Faith, chapter 12; etc.,
etc.), had he read this work by William Whitaker (and it is our prayer that he
may still perhaps do so), he would have found more
than a lifetime of Romanist readings and reasonings could overcome.
Whitaker's
design (prosecuted throughout his lifetime) was to deal systematically with the
major points of controversy between the Protestants and the Roman Catholics; his Disputation on
Holy Scripture
was the first in this series, and the only one translated from Latin into
English (of which we are aware). In his dedicatory epistle to William Cecil and
his preface to his Cambridge audience, he describes his opponents, especially
the Jesuits, and then his confidence in Christ and His truth to overcome them:
Amongst
these locusts [Rev. 9:3], -- that is, as very learned men justly deem, amongst
the innumerable troops of monks -- none, as we before said, have ever appeared,
more keen, or better prepared and equipped for doing mischief, than are the
Jesuits at this present day; who in a short space have surpassed all other
societies of that kind in numbers, in credit, and in audacity. Other monks,
following the rule and practice of former times, lived in general a life of
leisure and inactivity, and spent their time, not in reading and the study of
the sciences, but in repeating by the [hour]glass certain offices for the
canonical hours, which contributed nothing to the advancement of either
learning or religion. But the Jesuits have pursued a far different course. They
have left the shade of ancient sloth and inactivity, in which the other monks
had grown grey, and have come forth to engage in toils, to treat of arts and
sciences, to undertake and carry through an earnest struggle for the safety of
the common interest. It hath come to be understood, that the cause of Rome,
which, shaken by the perilous blows dealt on every side by men of ability and
learning, had begun in many parts to totter and give way, could never be
defended or maintained, except by learned and diligent and active champions....
Among these Jesuits, Robert Bellarmine, a native of Italy, hath now for several
years obtained a great and celebrated name.... Now, therefore, Bellarmine is
cried up by his party as an invincible champion, as one with whom none of our
men would dare to engage, whom nobody can answer, and whom if any one should
hope to conquer, they would regard him as an utter madman.
When
you, honoured sir, demanded my opinion of this writer, I answered, as indeed I
thought, that I deemed him to be a man unquestionably learned, possessed of a
happy genius, a penetrating judgment, and multifarious reading; -- one,
moreover, who was wont to deal more plainly and honestly than is the custom of
other papists, to press his arguments more home, and to stick more closely to
the question....
[N]ow
that Bellarmine hath been published, we shall know better and more certainly
what it is they [the Papists] hold upon every subject, the arguments on which
they specially rely, and what is (so to speak) the very marrow of popery, which
is thought to be as much in the Jesuits as in the pope himself....
Our arms shall be the sacred scriptures, that sword and shield
of the word, that tower of David, upon which a thousand bucklers hang, and all
the armour of the mighty, the sling and the pebbles of the brook wherewith
David stretched upon the ground that gigantic and haughty Philistine. Human reasonings and
testimonies, if one use them too much or out of place, are like the armour of Saul,
which was so far from helping David that it rather unfitted him for the
conflict.... However, since we have to deal with adversaries who, not content
with these arms, use others with more readiness and pleasure, such as the
decrees of councils, judgments of the fathers, tradition, and the practice of
the church; lest perchance we should appear to shrink from the battle, we have
determined to make use of that sort of weapons also. And,
indeed, I hope to make it plain to you, that all our tenets are not only
founded upon scriptural authority, which is enough to ensure victory, but
command the additional suffrage of the testimonies of the fathers, councils,
and, I will add, even of many of the papists, which is a distinguished and
splendid ornament of our triumph.... Thus
it will be clear, that what Jerome, Epist. 139, applies out of Isaiah to the
heretics, that 'they weave the spider's thread,' is pertinently applied to the
papists. For, as Jerome says, they weave a web 'which can catch small and light
animals, as flies and gnats, but is broken by the stronger ones.' Just thus
many stick fast in the subtleties of the papists, as flies do in the spider's
web, from which they are unable to extricate themselves, though nothing can
possibly be frailer than those threads. Such are the reasonings of the papist,
even the Jesuits themselves; who, although they seem to spin their threads with
greater skill and artfulness, yet fabricate nothing but such cobwebs as may
easily be broken by any vigorous effort. Be ye, therefore, of good
cheer. We have a cause, believe me, good, firm, invincible. We fight against men, and we have Christ on our side; nor can
we possibly be vanquished, unless we are the most slothful and dastardly of all
cowards. Once wrest from the papists what they adduce beside the scripture, and
you will presently see them wavering, turning pale, and unable to keep their
ground.
Bellarmine was
regarded by the Romanists as a scholarly and theological Goliath, and as Whitaker
notes above, he was indeed a greatly gifted and learned man. It is most
noteworthy, then, to read of Bellarmine's description of Whitaker:
"[a
man] whom Cardinal Bellarmine is said to have pronounced 'the most learned heretic he had ever read,' and
of whom Bishop Hall says, 'Who ever saw him
without reverence, or heard him without wonder?...." "'I
have,' says the writer of his life, in Lupton's Protestant Divines, 'I have
heard it confessed of English Papists themselves, which have been in Italy with
Bellarmine himself, that he [Bellarmine] procured the true portraiture and
effigies of this Whitaker to be brought to him, which he kept in his study. For
he privately admired this man for his singular learning and ingenuity; and
being asked of some of his friends, Jesuits, why he would have the picture of
that heretic in his presence? He would answer, Quod quamvis haereticus erat et
adversarius, erat tamen doctus adversarius: that, 'although he was an heretic,
and his adversary, yet he was a learned adversary'" ("Preface of the
Editor" in the 1857 edition of Nathanael Culverwell's Of the Light of
Nature;
and from the editor's preface of Whitaker's work).
In this book
we find the following six main chapters: "Of the number of the Canonical
Books of Scripture," "Of the Authentic Edition and Versions of the
Scriptures," "Of the Authority of Scripture," "Of the
Perspicuity of Scripture," "Of the Interpretation of Scripture,"
"Of the Perfection of Scripture, against Unwritten Traditions," as well as Whitaker's "Preface to the Controversies, Delivered to the
Audience at Cambridge."
Whitaker's
masterwork, refuting some of the best the Jesuits had to offer (in upholding
their Romish heresies attacking the Word of God), may even be more valuable in
our day than when it was first written -- as many Protestants are unaware of the
historic Protestant position on Scripture (witness the lack of response
described by Scott Hahn), or worse, are already on the way back to Rome (on
this and other vital points). Furthermore, Larry Birger comments, "...it's wonderful. He is absolutely thrashing the Papists,
tying them in knots with not only the Scriptures, but the writings of the
Church fathers (Jerome is devastating on the issue of the Apocrypha) and the
Papists themselves (e.g., Cajetan, John Driedo, Melchior Canus, Sixtus
Senensis)." This is a first-rate classic on some of the most
foundational teaching of the Faith, not to be missed by the serious Christian,
the scholar or anyone (including those presently trapped in Mystery Babylon the
great, the mother of harlots and abominations of the Earth [i.e. Roman Catholic
Church], Rev. 17:5) seeking ultimate truth. Study
for yourself what Hahn missed, as the Christ-empowered Whitaker sinks his
stones into Goliath's forehead, and then decapitates him with the sword of
truth and the skill of one exceedingly learned in the very areas the Papists
rely on the most! 718 pages, indexed; crystal-clear print.

WHITE, JAMES
R.
The Potter's Freedom: A
Defense of the Reformation and a Rebuttal of Norman Geisler's Chosen But
Free (2000)
"With great penetration of argument, and in a manner reminiscent of Luther
demolishing Erasmus, James White grinds the Semi-Pelagianism of Dr. Geisler to
fine powder - not in the spirit of triumphalism, but knowing that all
Arminianism is as hostile to the true gospel as it is friendly to a reviving
Roman Catholicism" (Maurice Roberts, Editor, "Banner of Truth"
Magazine, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK). "James White combines sound biblical
exegesis, theological erudition, and a deep passion for truth in his able
rebuttal to Norman Geisler's Chosen But Free. I am grateful that The Potter's
Freedom powerfully
exposes Geisler's inconsistencies and shows that his self-labeled
"moderate Calvinism" is no Calvinism at all. The Potter's Freedom has far-reaching consequences for any
serious student of Reformed theology, for Geisler is not a lone ranger in
promoting historic Reformed theology as "extreme Calvinism" and
Semi-pelagianism as "moderate Calvinism." I pray that God may use
this book abundantly to remove many caricatures about the Reformed faith and to
move many to embrace unabashedly solid, Reformed convictions" (Dr. Joel R.
Beeke).

WHITE, JAMES
R. and DAVE HUNT (DEBATE)
Debating Calvinism: Five
Points, Two Views (2004)
"When
it comes to the issues of the freedom of God, the efficacy of grace, and the
will of man, Mr. Hunt's evangelical tradition stands side by side with Rome in
denying the heart of the Reformation." James White.
James White, a defender of the
Biblical doctrine of salvation against the traditions of Arminius (and his
numerous followers), opens this book by providing background information and
then stating the central issue:
"In
the late summer of 2000, I interviewed Dave Hunt on KPXQ radio in Phoenix. Mr.
Hunt had just published an article in the Berean Call attacking the Reformed position. The
article misquoted Matthew 23:37 and presented the 'standard' objections to
Calvinism, objections based primarily upon evangelical/Arminian traditions and
common misconceptions concerning the actual beliefs of Calvinists. I had
written a full-length response to Norman Geisler on the same topic in The
Potter's Freedom, but
Dr. Geisler had declined every opportunity for dialogue, especially public
dialogue and debate. I knew Dave Hunt would not decline such an invitation.
"When
we began the program, I noted that both Dave Hunt and I engage in public,
formal debates with Roman Catholic apologists. I also noted that I had recently
debated Robert Sungenis, a Catholic apologist, on the topic of justification by
faith. Here is how the first question and response between Dave Hunt and me
went:
"White: One of the key issues that came out
therethis is one of the main reasons I contacted you, one of the main reasons
I wrote you the letteris the issue of monergism versus synergism; that is, the
idea that there is one force that brings about salvation, over against a
synergistic viewpoint that views it as a cooperation, a cooperative effort
between two forces, man and God. And the reason I brought that upis that Mr.
Sungenis, in representing the Roman Catholic perspective, very strongly
attacked the Reformed emphasis upon the sovereignty of the grace of God. In
light of your article, and the fact thatyou reject the concept of irresistible
graceyou and I are responding to one of the key issues of the Reformation in a
different way. In essence, my first question to you would be: Do you feel that
the Reformers Martin Luther and John Calvin were in error in emphasizing the
deadness of man in sin and the absolute necessity--not just necessity, but
sufficiency--of the grace of God to bring a person to salvation?
"Hunt: Well, first of all, James, I'm very
ignorant of the Reformers. I have not had time to read them. There are
truckloads, I guess, of their writings. I like to just kinda' pretend that
we're back there in the days of the apostles before all of these things were
written. And I like to go to the Bible. So whether the Reformers said this or
that, I don't know.
"Mr.
Hunt went on to say that we should go to the Bible, and I surely agreed with
that. But I was surprised that he was unaware of the issue Luther had described
as the very hinge upon which the entire Reformation turned; namely, the freedom
of God and the sufficiency
of the grace of God in salvation. This was even more surprising due to the fact
that Mr. Hunt's attacks upon the Reformed faith parallel those of Roman
Catholics. When it comes to the issues of the freedom of God, the efficacy of
grace, and the will of man, Mr. Hunt's evangelical tradition stands side by
side with Rome in denying the heart of the Reformation" [emphasis added] (pp. 11-12).
The real issue, as White points
out, is that Biblical salvation (contrary to the views of Dave Hunt and the
Pope) is monergistic rather than synergistic.
"Monergists
(such as Calvinists) believe there is one power involved in bringing about
salvation (God's), while synergists (Arminians, Roman Catholics, and most of
man's religions) believe it to be a cooperative effort, with the majority, of
course, being done by God, but, in the final analysis, with control remaining
in the hands of man" (p. 207).
According to Calvinism (and the
Bible) salvation is by faith alone. But according to Roman Catholicism and
Arminianism, salvation is by faith plus works or faith plus man's decision. Man
contributes some sort of merit in order to be saved.

The Pope of Rome is
Antichrist (1675, 1845 edition)
Calvin (on I John 2:18) writes, "Those that think that he (Antichrist)
would be just one man, are dreaming! For Paul... plainly shows that it would be
a body or a kingdom (II Thes. 2:3). He first foretells a falling away that
would spread throughout the whole Church... Then he makes the head of this
apostasy the adversary of Christ who would sit in God's temple and claim
divinity and divine honours. Unless we deliberately want to err, let us learn
to know Antichrist from Paul's description" (Cited in Nigel Lee, 666:
Luther and Calvin's Doctrine of Antichrist: Antichrist in Scripture [Focus
Christian Ministries, 1992], p. 58). Wilkinson's book takes the classic
Protestant position, called "historicism;" held by Luther, Calvin,
Knox, the Westminster Divines, and most other Protestants, until the Jesuit
inspired "futurist" and "preterist" systems began to gain
ground, when Reformation hermeneutics waned. Shows how Protestants prove that
the Pope is that "Antichrist" and "man of sin" set forth in
Scripture. Deals with the mystery of iniquity, the great apostasy, and
practical applications of the doctrines examined.

Instrumental Music in the
Worship of God: Commanded or Not Commanded?
There is no doubt that this is the best short written treatment of this
subject. Great principles are involved here, including the standard of sola
Scriptura and protecting the work of Christ. Many of the Reformers re-cognized
the introduction of musical instruments, the organ in particular, as the badge
of Popery. There are abundant Biblical reasons for this and it certainly was
not just some knee-jerk reaction to Romanism, as Williamson carefully
demonstrates. In fact, the historic practice and testimony of the church is
fascinating, as Girardeau in his classic, Instrumental Music in the Public
Worship of God, notes, "Let us pause a moment to notice the fact,
supported by a mass of incontrovertible evi-dence, that the Christian church
did not employ instrumental music in its public worship for 1200 years after
Christ....It deserves serious consideration, moreover, that notwithstanding the
ever-ac-celerated drift towards corruption in worship as well as in doctrine
and government, the Roman Catholic Church did not adopt this corrupt practice
until about the middle of the thirteenth cen-tury....When the organ was
introduced into its worship it encountered strong opposition, and made its way but
slowly to general acceptance. These assuredly are facts that should profoundly
impress Protestant churches. How can they adopt a practice which the Roman
Church, in the year 1200, had not admitted...Then came the Reformation; and the
question arises, How did the Re-formers deal with instrumental music in the
church?...Zwingle has already been quoted to show instrumental music was one of
the shadows of the old law which has been realized in the gospel. He pronounces
its employment in the present dispensation 'wicked pervicacity.' There is no
doubt in regard to his views on the subject, which were adopted by the Swiss
Reformed churches...Calvin is very express in his condemnation of instrumental
music in connection with the public worship of the Christian church...In his
homily on 1 Sam. xviii. 1-9, he delivers him-self emphatically and solemnly
upon the subject: In Popery there was a ridiculous and unsuitable imitation
[of the Jews]. While they adorned their temples, and valued themselves as
having made the worship of God more splendid and inviting, they employed
organs, and many other such ludicrous things, by which the Word and worship of
God are exceedingly pro-faned, the people being much more attached to those
rites than to the understanding of the divine Word...' Whatever may be the
practice in recent times of the churches of Holland, the Synods of the
Re-formed Dutch Church, soon after the Reformation, pronounced very decidedly
against the use of instrumental music in public worship. The National Synod at
Middleburg, in 1581, declared against it, and the Synod of Holland and Zealand,
in 1594, adopted this strong resolution; 'That they would endeavor to obtain of
the magistrate the laying aside of organs, and the singing with them in the
churches...' The Provincial Synod of Dort also inveighed severely against their
use...The Rev. Charles H. Spurgeon, ...upholds an apostolic simplicity of
worship. The great congregation which is blessed with the privilege of
listening to his instructions has no organ to assist' them in singing...The
non-prelatic churches, Independent and Presbyterian, began their de-velopment
on the American continent without instrumental music. They followed the English
Puri-tans and the Scottish Church, which had adopted the principles of the
Calvinistic Reformed Church...It has thus been proved by an appeal to
historical facts, that the church, although lapsing more and more into
defection from the truth and into a corruption of apostolic practice, had no
in-strumental music for twelve hundred years; and that the Calvinistic Reformed
Church ejected it from its services as a element of Popery, even the Church of
England having come very nigh to its extrusion from her worship. The historical
argument, therefore, combines with the scriptural and the confessional to raise
a solemn and powerful protest against its employment by the Presbyterian
Church. IT IS HERESY IN THE SPHERE OF WORSHIP!" If you are still
unconvinced of the importance of this subject, give this short booklet (16 pages)
a quick look -- you may be surprised at what you find. Related item: Greg
Price's two sermons on this topic Instrumental Music in the OT and NT (on one
video $11.99 or on two cassettes, $3.97) present these arguments in a more
detailed fashion. One of these sermons ran directly into a communion service
without missing a beat being applied directly to the Lord's supper, assurance
of salvation and justification by faith alone. That should give you an
indication of some of the important implications found here.

WILLSON, JAMES M.
Civil Government: An
Exposition of Romans 13:1-7 (1853)
Does the Bible give any qualifications for
Christians to judge whether or not a given civil magistrate is a lawful or
unlawful "power" in the eyes of God? Does the very existence of a
civil "power" (say Hitler's Nazi state, for example) make it a
legitimate government according to Romans 13? Or, can a civil government obtain its
"power" from "the beast" (as the book of Revelation
teaches) -- as some "churches" do? Should
civil "authorities" be judged according to the secret or revealed
will of God? This is a fine piece of exegetical work, well nigh
irrefutable, arguing that God has given clear
revelation regarding the lawfulness and unlawfulness of any given civil
magistrate. Willson's Scriptural conclusion will surprise many, anger
not a few, and, we believe, be found honoring to God. Though the book is easy
reading, these are deep waters with implications that are among the most far
reaching. It is a very controversial publication based on the idea that "unholy republics refuse to acknowledge Him (Christ) as
Lord of all." This failure to covenant with Christ, as nations,
exposes the fact that these national governments are the enemies of Christ (as
with the individual or church who will not covenant with Christ). They are thus in violation of the first commandment and
therefore treasonous usurpers who will not have the one true king to rule over
them. Their laws and actions bare this out, as they refuse to rule by the law
of God, but rather, as dupes of Satan, rule by their own autonomous standards.
And, though it is their duty to be a terror to evil and promote the good, they,
in the main, do the opposite. They protect and
support murderers (e.g. abortionists), continence and permit perversity (e.g.
homosexuality, pornography, etc.) and take no action to establish the Reformed
faith (but rather extend constitutional rights to all manner of cults,
sectarians, satanists and Roman Catholics) -- to name but a few of the more
obvious areas of government rebellion against King Jesus. Willson's
father's application of the principles put forth in this book are found just
below (in Prince Messiah's Claims to Dominion
Over All Governments: and the Disregard of His Authority by the United States
in the Federal Constitution, 1832) as they relate to the
United States government specifically. Knox, Rutherford and Gillespie would be
proud! 162 pages.

WILLSON, JAMES R.
Dr. (Isaac) Watts, an
Anti-Trinitarian: Demonstrated in A Review of Dr. Samuel Miller's Letter to the
editor of the Unitarian Miscellany (1821)
This book is a
review of a letter written by Prof. Samuel Miller. Prof. Miller had
preached a sermon in which he had noted that Unitarians
are not Christians, and in response a Unitarian periodical had
published a heated attack on Miller. Miller thus wrote a reply to the attack,
but the Unitarian periodical would not print it. Miller's reply was then
published separately.
Willson reviews
Miller's letter and points out that he clearly refutes the Unitarian's
published attack. There was only one problem with Miller's argument; he claims
that Isaac Watts was a Trinitarian. Watts was not,
in fact, a Trinitarian, and Willson considered this point important enough to
demonstrate from Watts' own work that he does not hold to the orthodox view of
the Trinity. After citing portions of Watts' writing, Willson
states,
"In
these quotations Watts cannot be misunderstood. He
most distinctly denies the existence of three persons in the Trinity,
and makes the Son and Holy Ghost to be mere faculties, physical faculties, or
attributes. The Son and Holy Ghost, in his view, are no more persons, than the
human understanding and will are persons."
Thus,
Isaac Watts, a favorite hymn writer of evangelicals, actually held to what
Willson, Miller, and Turrettin all agree (in this book) is a "damnable
heresy."
For as Willson points out, Turrettin maintains, that no anti-trinitarian can
be saved,
while continuing in the belief of anti-trinitarianism. Contains 18
(8.5"X11") newly typeset pages.

Some Reasons for Retaining
the Westminster Confession as the Basis of Ecclesiastical Union
Explains why the use of the
Westminster Confession is one of the best ways in which to obtain godly
ecclesiastical union.
This booklet pays special attention to the biblical teaching regarding civil
government and shows why changes to the original WCF (regarding this matter)
has resulted, not surprisingly, in much ecclesiastical disunity. It also
contains some interesting notes on the millennial power and glory that will be
exhibited in both church and state "in the day of the Lord's power".

WILLSON, JAMES R.
Prince Messiah's Claims to
Dominion Over All Governments: and the Disregard of His Authority by the United
States in the Federal Constitution (1832)
The reality of Christ's kingship explored
and vindicated from Scripture, with application to the United States
constitution.
The author's conclusions have far-reaching consequences and should be looked at
seriously by all Christians, whether they reside in the United States or not
(for the biblical principles enumerated here also apply to other nations). We,
today, are seeing the desolation of kingdoms worldwide (through wars, famines,
disease, unjust taxation, immorality, etc.) by the wrath of the Lamb, much of
which can be attributed to national ignorance of this doctrine. "Kiss the
Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath be kindled
but a little" (Psalm 2:12). This book will go a long way to exposing the
fact, as Willson writes, that "ungodly men
have occupied, and do now occupy, many of the official stations, in the
government," and that "Tyrants are yet on their thrones, and unholy
republics refuse to acknowledge Him (Christ--RB) as Lord of all." 48 pages.

The Sabbath: A Discourse on
the Duty of Civil Government in Relation to the Sanctification of the Lord's
Day (1829)
Nations, as moral persons before God, are bound to keep the moral law. Here
Willson shows what this means in regard to the fourth commandment, explaining
why civil Antichrist finds it especially useful to overthrow the law of God at
this point. "And say unto them, Hear ye the word of the LORD, ye kings
of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, that enter in by
these gates: Thus saith the LORD; Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden
on the sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem; Neither carry
forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work,
but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers" (Jer.
17:20-22, emphasis added). 48 pages.

A Sermon on the Glory and
Security of the Church of God (1824)
Willson writes, "From the opposition of the nations; from the numbers and
zeal of the enemy; from the divisions of the church; from the ignorance, error,
or immorality, of church members; the friends of Zion ought not to be
discouraged. They are afflictive, indeed, and very painful; but what are they
all, when weighed in the balance against the promises of God, which assure our
faith and comfort our hearts? To them all, collectively, faith will say: 'Who
art thou, O great mountain! before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain.'
Though Jacob be but a worm, yet 'he shall thresh the mountains with his new
sharp threshing instrument, and beat them small, and make the hills as chaff.
He shall fan them, and the whirlwind shall scatter them: and he shall rejoice
in the Lord, and shall glory in the Holy One of Israel.' 'For upon all the
glory shall be a defence.'" The final Scripture cited is the subject of
the sermon; encouraging the saints to rest upon the promises of God and look
for His certain victory. 35 pages.

WILLSON, JAMES R.
The Subjection of Kings and
Nations to Messiah (1820)
A lengthy sermon of 64 pages preached Dec. 6,
1819. Based on the text: "All Kings shall bow
down before him: all nations shall serve him" (Ps. 72:11).
Maintains that this text refers to a commanded duty, concerning Christ not
Solomon, and should be translated "Let all kings bow down before him: Let
all nations serve him." Explains this national duty, enquires as to how it
is to be nationally preformed, then proceeds to make practical application of
the subject. Shows that nations have a duty, as
nations, to bind themselves to Christ by covenant, to consecrate themselves to
Him, to swear allegiance to Him (as their King and Lord), and to obey all His
holy law! Furthermore, Willson maintains that it is a great sin for
nations to remain in rebellion against Christ by not performing these duties.
He also demonstrates how and why a high-handed sin of this nature brings
corporate guilt upon the nation. Moreover, this sin provokes God to wrath (as
seen in an escalation of national calamities), until the day, barring
repentance, that the national "cup of wrath" overflows. Also contains helpful direction regarding the
individual's social responsibility as a Christian in times of national
corporate defection from Christ's crown and covenant (i.e in times exactly like
those that we live in).

Truth: A Sermon on Steadfast
Adherence to the Distinctive Doctrines of the Church (1833)
How little truth is esteemed in our day in the professing Christian community.
Outward pomp (especially in worship), "success" in numbers, false
unity, charismatic gifts are all cried up, but little is ever heard about
standing for the truth -- whatever the cost. This sermon exhorts Christians to
their duty of walking in the truth and explains the joy that comes to the believer
when the church walks in the truth of the Gospel. Reformed Presbyterian
distinctives are dealt with throughout. 48 pages.

The title continues: "Wherein the Question, concerning Secession from the
present Judicatories, is stated and examined." Written in 1738, this
letter deals with corporate backsliding, heresy, testimony, attainments,
separation, etc., and the visible church. Wilson was one of the founders of the
Secession church and was known as "the tongue of the Associate
Presbytery" (David Lachman, Dictionary of Scottish Church History &

The Theatre (1840)
In light of the fact that the modern "theatre" (in the form of
godless movies and television) has become one of the most powerful weapons in the
arsenal of Antichrist, Christian everywhere need (maybe more than ever) to
understand the origins and dangers of these forms of information (propaganda?)
dissemination. Some chapters in this book include: the origin and progress of
drama; fruitless attempts to reform the theatre; authorities against the
theatre (and much more). Winchester also answers such question as: Is the
theatre a mirror of nature? and Is the theatre a school of virtue? "I will
set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside;
it shall not cleave to me" (Ps. 101:3). 239 pages.

The Hebrew Republic
"I confess that before I read this book I misapprehended that the American
republic was founded on the models of Greece and Rome. Wines clearly and
ineluctably shows that the model for the United States constitution and form of
government was none other than that of the Hebrew Republic," writes
Franklin Sanders in Heiland (Bermuda: Machrihanish Ltd, 1986, p. 275). But
though the Hebrew Republic may have been a model for the U.S. constitution in
general, some of the most important and foundational specifics of the Hebrew
model have clearly been ignored or even set aside totally (as Willson's Prince
Messiah, above, demonstrates).
Samuel Wylie, in his Two Sons of Oil also outlines many reasons why the U.S. federal government
is not modelled after the Hebrew Republic. Among them he lists: "The
federal constitution, or instrument of national union, does not even recognize
the existence of God, the Kings of the Nations;" "the State
constitutions (are allowed to--RB) contain positive immorality;" "the
government gives a legal security and establishment to gross heresy, blasphemy,
and idolatry (Romanism and other false religions--RB), under the notion of
liberty of conscience;" "its officers are sworn, by necessary
implication, to support what God Almighty forbids;" "they make no
provision for the interest of true religion;" "Deists, and even atheists
may be chief magistrates;" and they overtly reject the law of God --
especially the first commandment as it applies to national leaders and the
constitution (cf. pp. 7-42 in the 1995 reprint, of the 1850 edition, by
Covenanted Reformed Presbyterian Publishing). On the other hand, some useful
insights can be gleaned from this title as this book demonstrates the
impossibility of pluralistic polytheism (many gods -- many laws) ever bringing
real peace and blessing to any society. It also shows that Christian monotheism
(the one true and living God and His one absolute law) is the only road to
blessing -- but as noted above has muted is point considerably. Wines also
proclaims the foundational nature of self-government to all the other spheres
of government (i.e. family, church and state).

The Economy of the Covenants
Between God and Man Comprehending a Complete Body of Divinity (1822,
2 volumes)
"The sale
of Witsius' Economy of the Covenants, increases among my friends. The translation is
very just, and the excellency of the work merits a place in every Christian's
library; I shall do my utmost to recommend it at all times, and on all proper
occasions. No pious person on earth can forbear
reading the 3d book without wonder, rapture, and devotion. It exceeds all
commendation: Hervey might well say, "I would not scruple to risk all my
reputation upon the merits of this performance." For my own
part, I am not ashamed, nor afraid of any scorn and ridicule, that may be
poured on me from any quarter, whilst I constantly aver, that the work has
not its equal in the world" (Extract of a Letter from a Minister in the Country
to the Publisher).
Greg Price
(GLP) has also provided the following:
Herman
Witsius (1636-1708) was one of the most notable
Dutch theologians of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. His
influence theologically was felt both at home and abroad. Witsius also excelled
as a friend and supporter of the cause of the downtrodden and persecuted
Covenanters (as represented by Cameron, Cargill, and Renwick). He was
particularly instrumental in the ordination of Mr. James Renwick (who was
ordained by the Classis of Groningen):
Mr.
James Renwick was now ordained by the Classis of Groningen. He was a man of
remarkable piety, and recommended himself exceedingly to these godly divines of
the Church of Holland by his unwavering faithfulness.
He
explained to them his principles, and bore an explicit testimony against the
remaining corruptions of the Belgic Church. He refused ordination at Embden,
where it was first offered to him, because the ministry of that place had
embraced the Cocceian errors [Footnote: "The Cocceians consider the
historical part of the Old Testament as typical of the new dispensation. The
ceremonial law they view as a punishment inflicted on the Jews for their
transgressions, particularly for having worshipped the golden calf. They deny
the morality of the fourth commandment."]. Even at Groningen, he would on
no account subscribe the constitution and catechism of the Dutch Church.
Sensible of the justness of his animadversions [i.e. criticisms--GLP], and
impressed with the solemnity and integrity which appeared in whatever he said,
these godly ministers declared it was the Lord's cause, and although all the
powers on earth should resent it, they would ordain to the holy ministry this
eminently pious youth.
He
subscribed, in the presence of the Classis, the confession and standards agreed
upon by the assembly at Westminster, and he was ordained, with the imposition
of hands, a minister of the gospel of Christ, for the Reformed Presbyterian
Church, now suffering in Scotland. For this remarkable condescension in the
Church of Holland, the Scottish covenanters are obliged to the pious exertions
of Sir Robert Hamilton, as the instrument employed by God to assist Mr. Renwick
in convincing these pious divines of the superior purity of the covenanted
Church of Scotland. *Professor Witsius*, professor Mark, and Mr. Brakel,
distinguished themselves as the friends of the covenanters (Reformation
Principles Exhibited,
The Reformed Presbyterian Church In The United States Of America, 1807, pp.
85-87, emphases added).
Professor Berkhof has placed Witsius amongst the most notable
Dutch divines who embraced the Postmillennial position in distinction from the
Premillennial and Amillennial positions.
During
the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries several Reformed theologians in the Netherlands
taught a form of Chiliasm which would now be called Postmillennialism. Among
them were such well-known men as Coccejus [as noted above, Cocceius embraced
certain errors against which faithful Reformed Presbyterians have and continue
to testify--GLP], Alting, the two Vitringas, d'Outrein, Witsius, Hoornbeek,
Koelman, and Brakel, of which some regarded the millennium as belonging to the
past, others thought of it as present, and still others looked for it in the
future [among this latter group was Witsius--GLP]. The majority expected it
toward the end of the world, just before the second coming of Christ. These men
rejected the two leading ideas of the Premillennarians, namely, that Christ
will return physically *to reign on earth for a thousand years, and that the
saints will be raised up at His coming, and will then reign with him in the
millennial kingdom. [They also rejected the main idea of the Amillennarians,
namely, that the saints millennial reign is limited in its scope to that of
either a heavenly reign with Christ or a spiritual reign of Christ within the
believer's heart. To the contrary, these Dutch Postmillennarians shared in
common the biblical hope that the Spirit and the gospel in the last days would
produce an extended period of time in which Antichrist would be destroyed, all
of Israel called, the fulness of the Gentiles brought in i.e. a vast majority
of the nations of the world in their national capacity brought to Christ, and
as a result universal peace exhibited between the nations of the world--GLP].
While the representations differed in some details, the prevailing view was
that the gospel, which will gradually spread through the whole world, will in
the end become immeasurably more effective than it is at present, and will usher
in a period of rich spiritual blessings for the Church of Jesus Christ, a
golden age, in which the Jews will also share in the blessings of the gospel in
an unprecedented manner (Systematic Theology, L.Berkhof,[1941] 1976,
p.716).
In
the very words of Witsius in his "Dedication" to The Economy Of
The Covenants,
we find this postmillennial hope concerning the prosperity of the gospel in the
last days burning in his breast:
May
that day, which is the ardent prayer of so many pious persons, at length appear,
when all names of distinction [i.e. ecclesiastical differences amongst
Churches--GLP] being taken out of the way, and buried in everlasting oblivion,
the whole Christian world, from the rising to the setting sun, may with one
heart and one mouth, worship and praise one God, and, as it is in the prophecy
of Zechariah [Zechariah 14:9--GLP], Jehovah may be one, and his name one in all
the earth [God's name is that by which He makes Himself known to man according
to Westminster's Shorter Catechism #55. Thus, in the millennial period prior to
Christ's second coming the Church throughout the world will embrace and profess
God's name by means of a uniformity in one doctrine, one worship, one church
government, and all securely bound together by one covenant obliging not only
the Churches, but also Nations of the world--GLP]. As this certainly ought to
be the earnest prayer of all Christians, in an especial manner it ought to be
the endeavour of those to whom Jesus, the king, both of truth and peace, has committed
the office of preaching the gospel (The Economy Of The Covenants, Witsius, [1693] 1990,
1:14).
Finally,
I submit that where the gospel is received in faith and love and practiced in
the lives of those who so receive it, its visible effects are always realized
(whether in individuals, families, churches, and nations). The effects of the
gospel cannot be hidden under a bushel. The work of the gospel cannot help but
change not only individuals, but even nations that have submitted themselves to
Christ. Micah 4:3,4 describes a period of time in the last days when neither a
few individuals or a few nations will submit themselves to Christ's rule, but
an unprecedented time in history when "many nations" in their
national capacity will join with one another in covenant to submit themselves
to the governance of Christ. For these are not simply isolated individual
people throughout the world who beat their swords into plowshares and their
spears into pruning hooks, but entire nations (in their national capacity) who
do so. Furthermore, it is not simply one or two nations that learn war no more,
but many nations. What a glorious prospect: universal peace due not to the
meritorious works of men, nor due to the social engineering and political
alliances of sinful men, but due to the powerful and glorious gospel of Jesus
Christ which alone (by the grace of God) can establish amity between
individuals and nations that are at enmity.

WITSIUS, HERMAN
The Restoration of the Jews:
An Extract from Herman Witsius (1806)
In
the debate over Biblical eschatology, a central pillar of the postmillennial
argument has been the prophesied future revival among the Jews. Romans 11, and other
Scripture passages, point to an event where the Jews will finally turn to the
Messiah, Jesus Christ. A number of Reformed theologians, however, have tried to
"spiritualize" this event, so that in their view it is not referring
to the Jews (as a people) at all. This frequently leads to the erroneous
Amillennial view. Herman Witsius, the noted Dutch theologian of the seventeenth
century, was a major proponent of the more natural interpretation of these
passages, and in this booklet he strongly opposes those who spiritualize the
interpretation.
Witsius begins
this piece by saying, "We may reckon among the benefits of the New
Testament the restoration of the Israelites, who were formerly rejected, and
the bringing them back to the communion of God in Christ" (p. 4). He then
expounds upon Romans chapter 11, showing this to be the case. Having completed
this exposition, he notes that any other interpretation (i.e., other than
"Israel" meaning the Jews in Romans 11) is wrong: "From what we
have said before, it appears, that they depart from the apostle's meaning, who,
by *all Israel*, understand the *mystical Israel*, or the people of God,
consisting both of Jews and Gentiles, without admitting the conversion of the
whole Jewish nation to Christ, in the sense we have mentioned" (p.
8).
In
summary form, Witsius' position is that "we are to expect the general
conversion of the Israelites in time to come, not indeed of every individual,
but of the whole body of the nation, and of the twelve tribes" (p. 16). This is a great
future event that Christians can look forward to. A major revival is yet to
occur.

W. L. S. G.
The Trial of Antichrist, Otherwise,
The Man of Sin, for High Treason Against the Son of God... (1853)
Strikes at those intolerant and slavish
principles so peculiar to the spirit and genius of Popery. The Pope is charged with High Treason against the King of
Heaven, for usurping his supremacy, dignified titles, power, etc. The witnesses, of course, are historical and include the
Martyrs, who were burnt to ashes or otherwise put to death for opposing this
beast. The book is designed to be an
abridgment of ecclesiastical history, for upwards of twelve hundred
years, and to confirm the testimony of Scripture against this mother of
(spiritual) harlots.

WODROW, ROBERT
THE HISTORY OF THE
SUFFERINGS OF THE CHURCH OF SCOTLAND
From the Restoration to
the Revolution
(4 Volume Hardcover Set)
"Oh, my! Reprinting Wodrow's History would be a WONDERFUL service to
church historians, especially regarding the history of the Scottish church in the
16th and, especially, 17th centuries, but more widely, too, in that he often
documents the strong interaction of the Scots with Reformed thinkers (and
doers) from the rest of Britain, Ireland, and the Continent. It is a marvelous work of tremendous
value, filled with complete texts of primary documents from the time, as well
as Wodrow's intricately detailed and carefully researched historical narrative. I have the four-volume set
myself, rebound at the University of St. Andrews from its original printing,
and made huge use of it in my doctoral work."
- Dr. E. Calvin Beisner
"The church historian Robert Wodrow's (1679-1734) History of the
Sufferings of the Church of Scotland is a massive, detailed classic, most
worthy of being reprinted. Historical
scholarship has proven that this set of books forms a reliable work written by
a diligent historian who served for some years as a librarian prior to
ministering in a small charge near Paisley, Scotland. Anyone
interested in Scottish church history will want to purchase this set, and will
be moved, humbled, and challenged by the remarkable sufferings our Scottish
brethren endured so heroically for Christ's sake."
- Dr. Joel R. Beeke, Puritan
Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan
Robert Wodrow (1679-1734) completed his Magnum Opus, "The History of the
Sufferings of the Church of Scotland from the Restoration to the
Revolution," in 1723-24. This work, for which his integrity, candor,
liberality of sentiment, and talents, eminently qualified him, he contemplated
from an early period of his life; but it was only in the year 1707, that he
began seriously to labour on it. From this time, however, till its publication
in 1721 and 1722, a period of between fourteen and fifteen years, he devoted
all his leisure hours to its composition.
On the appearance of Mr. Wodrow's History, which was published in three
large folio volumes at separate times, in the years above named, its author was
attacked by those whom his fidelity as an historian had offended, with the
vilest scurrility and abuse. Anonymous and threatening letters were sent to
him, and every description of indignity was attempted to be thrown on both his
person and his work. The faithful, liberal, and impartial character of the
history, nevertheless, procured its author many and powerful friends. Its
merits were, by a large party, appreciated and acknowledged, and every man
whose love of truth was stronger than his prejudices, awarded it the meed of
his applause. Copies of the work were
presented by Dr. Fraser to their majesties, and the prince and princess of
Wales, and were received so graciously, and so much approved of, that the
presentation was almost immediately followed by a royal order on the Scottish
exchequer for one hundred guineas to be paid to the author, as a testimony of
his majesty's favorable opinion of his merits. The warrant for the payment of
this sum is dated the 26th April, 1725. In 1830, a second edition of the
History was published, in 4 volumes 8vo, by Messrs Blackie and Fullarton of
Glasgow, under the editorial care of the Rev. Dr. Burns of Paisley.

Biographical Sketch of the Author
Robert Wodrow (1679 - March 21, 1734),
Scottish historian, was born at Glasgow,
being a son of James Wodrow, professor of divinity. He was educated at the
university and was librarian from 1697 to 1701. From 1703 till his death, he
was parish minister at Eastwood, near Glasgow. He had sixteen children, his son
Patrick being the "auld Wodrow" of Burns's poem "Twa
Herds." His great work, The History of the Sufferings of the
Church of Scotland from the Restoration to the Revolution, was published in two volumes in 1721-1722 (new
ed. with a life of Wodrow by Robert Burns, DD, 1807-1808). This recorded and
denounced the persecution of the Covenanters after the restoration of the
monarchy in 1660, including what he called "The Killing Times." He
was one of the first historians to use "publick records, original papers,
and manuscripts of that time" and included many first-hand accounts of
this period in the history of the Church of Scotland, producing a martyrology
that the church would turn to again at times of suffering. Wodrow
also wrote a Life (1828) of his father. He left two other works in manuscript: Memoirs
of Reformers and Ministers of the Church of Scotland, and Analecta: or Materials for a History
of Remarkable Providences, mostly relating to Scotch Ministers and Christians. Of the former, two volumes were published by the
Maitland Club in 1834-1845 and one volume by the New Spalding Club in 1890; the
latter was published in four volumes by the Maitland Club in 1842-1843. Wodrow
left a great mass of correspondence, three volumes of which, edited by Thomas
McCrie, appeared in 1843-1844. The Wodrow Society, founded in Edinburgh to
perpetuate his memory, was in existence from 1841 to 1847, several works being
published under its auspices.
A Little Stone Pretended to
be out of the Mountain (1654)
"With the invasion of Cromwell's army there was an invasion also of
Independency. With ... (the covenant breaking Cromwell--RB) a minister by the
name of Lockyer came north to win Scotland from her errors in Church
government. The divine was not so successful as the soldier. However he did his
best. Wood was selected to reply, and his reply is of sterling worth. It is
admirably clear. Evidently well-read in the great theologians of the past,--
knowing his subject thoroughly, and never for a moment letting the point in
hand out of his sight or out of his grip, with a certain ring of power in his
expressions,-- it seems to me that James Wood ranks among our ablest men"
writes Walker (cited in Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 330). Walker is known for his own
compromises, so in answer to the final clause in Walker's statement we note:
Notwithstanding Wood's later defection and covenant-breaking, when he became a
leading Resolutioner and helped split the Church of Scotland (in opposition to
the Protesters lead by Rutherford, Guthrie and others), this is an able and
useful work in defense of Presbyterianism -- showing Independent church
government to be idolatrous. 20 pages, very rare.

No Place for Sovereignty:
What's Wrong with Freewill Theism (1996)
"Wright sets out to show what's wrong -- biblically, theologically and
philosophically -- with freewill theory in its ancient, as well as current,
form. In particular, he subjects the recent work of Clark Pinnock to scrutiny.
Here is a fresh, powerful case for the Reformed emphasis on God's sovereign
grace" (back cover). This is a well documented work which shows, better
than most, how Arminianism is just the first step towards more pronounced forms
of heresy and apostasy. It demonstrates how the Arminians' view "our
relation to God (as) essentially democratic, balancing human rights over
against God's rights" (p. 98). This, of course, leads to subjectivism,
emotionalism, sensationalism, and ultimately (over generations) a rejection of
God's Word (among individuals); anti-creedalism, independency and the
insistence on man's pretended liberty of conscience (in the ecclesiastical
sphere); and democracy (contra theocracy), so-called "human rights"
and a disdain for God's law (and covenants) in the civil sphere. Wright also
challenges the syncretism (false mixing) of Arminianism at various levels.
Wright writes, "First philosophy, then theology and finally the theory of
apologetics itself all demonstrate that apologetic method must be rooted in a
fully coherent systematic theology. No one can escape taking sides in this
debate, however hard they may try to straddle the fence of compromise while
constructing yet another syncretism. The fence is itself an illusion, and
history shows that syncretism is a characteristic besetting sin of the carnal
mind. Repentance is the only real answer. According to the gospel, it is always
the real answer for believer and unbeliever alike. As far as the Bible itself
is concerned, the challenge to the Christian who thinks of free will as a mark
of evangelicalism is to start by demonstrating this fundamental presupposition
from the text by exegesis. Since Augustine summarized the thought of the age of
the Fathers in order to refute Pelagians, this has proved impossible" (pp.
229-230). In short, this book shows how and why "Arminianism is at heart a
form of humanism" (p. 99).

WYCLIFFE, JOHN
An Apology for Lollard
Doctrine (1842 edition)
Of John
Wycliffe, Thomas Smith, in his Select Memoirs
of the Lives Labors and Sufferings of Those Pious and Learned English and
Scottish Divines... Promoting the Reformation ( http://www.swrb.com/catalog/s.htm ) writes,
(He)
has been justly denominated the first English
reformer. The Wickliffites were grievously oppressed, but could not
be extinguished; persecution only served to establish those doctrines, which,
about an hundred years after this, became general in England, when the nation
embraced the faith which this morning-star of the
reformation had so early restored, not only to his own, but we may
say, without hesitation, to all the nations of Christendom. His works were
circulated by lord Cobham through great part of the continent. The servants and
attendants of queen Ann, the wife of Richard II on returning to Bohemia,
carried along with them several of Wickliff's writings, which were the means of
promoting the reformation in that part of the continent. Numbers were also
brought into Germany by Peter Payne, an Englishman, and a disciple of
Wickliff's. They were so numerous in Bohemia, that two hundred volumes, finely
written, and elegantly covered, were burnt by archbishop Sbinko. A young
Bohemian nobleman, who had been prosecuting his studies at Oxford, likewise
took home several of Wickliff's books; and being well acquainted with John
Huss, favoured him with a perusal; which was the means of converting this
excellent man, and the greater part of the university of Prague, to the faith
of the reformation; which Huss, ever after, publicly taught and circulated with
almost enthusiastic assiduity; vindicating the same in the face of the council
who condemned his body to the flames. He considered
Wickliff an angel sent from heaven to enlighten mankind; and amid the fire that
consumed him, exulted in the prospect of associating with him in the enjoyment
of celestial happiness. In concluding this memoir, we cannot help
expressing our regret, that nothing has been done to perpetuate the memory of
this great man, to whom his country is evidently more indebted, both for her
civil and religious privileges, than to any one of her most distinguished
warriors.

WYCLIFFE, JOHN
Writings of John Wycliffe
Thomas Smith,
in his Select Memoirs of the Lives Labors and
Sufferings of Those Pious and Learned English and Scottish Divines... Promoting
the Reformation ( http://www.swrb.com/catalog/s.htm ) writes,
Wycliffe
had studied theology with great care and remarkable success. He was endowed
with an uncommon gravity, and the purity of his manners correspond with his
character as a teacher of religion and minister of Jesus Christ... His works,
that are yet extant, discover a soundness of judgment, and reasoning powers of
the first order; they breath a spirit of genuine piety, and manifest a modesty
altogether uncommon in that age of trifling puerility... His works, especially
his translation of the Bible, were wrote in the most expressive language of the
age... The doctrines taught by Wycliffe unhinged the infallibility of the pope
(pp. 93-95).
This
work is made up of a wide variety of Wycliffe's writings. Included are "His
Confession respecting the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper," "His
Letter of Excuse to pope Urban VI," "Antichrist's Labour to destroy
Holy Writ," Wycliffe's "Opinions of the Papacy," "Of
Spiritual Gifts," and articles on faith, the ten commandments, the Lord's
prayer, temptation, sanctification, loving God, prayer, transubstantiation, and
much more! Also includes a 40 page account of Wycliffe's life, specimens of
Wycliffe's translation of the Bible, an article on the "Disciples of
Wycliffe" and "Writings and Examinations of Brute, Thorpe (Image
Worship Unlawful), Cobham, Hilton, Pecock, Bilney, and Others." This book
also includes John Foxe's "The State of the Church of Christ at the
Commencement of the Reformation" and "The Benefit and Invention of
Printing" (from Foxe's Book of Martyrs. http://www.swrb.com/catalog/f.htm

WYLIE, J.A.
The History of Protestantism (3
volumes, 1878)
Walk about Zion, and go round about her: tell
the towers thereof. Mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces; that ye
may tell it to the generation following" (Ps. 48:12-13).
In direct
opposition to the command cited above in Psalm 48:12-13, when The History of
Protestantism
was first published, Rome banned this book, buying up
and burning all the copies that they could lay their hands on. It was more hated and denounced by Papists than any
other book of its time. History is a powerful weapon and all tyrants
seek to either revise or bury the history of God's marvelous works. Rome is no
exception. Rome twists history for its own wicked
purposes, whereas Protestants use history (as commanded in Scripture) to build
one another up in our most holy faith (Ps. 78:1-8).
"Wylie's...
is the best history extant. I welcome its republishing. Read it. Study it.
Circulate it and by so doing you will help to dispel the dark cloud of priestly
superstition, popish idolatry and papal tyranny encircling our land"
writes Ian Paisley. He continues, "The
Reformation of the 16th century was the greatest revival of New Testament
Christianity since the days of Pentecost. Then once more the gospel in its
purity was preached with apostolic power and with apostolic results."
This massive
three-volume set contains nearly 2000 (8.5" X 11") pages, more than
500 illustrations and a 21 page general index. It chronicles Protestantism in
its progress from the first century to the late 17th century -- though the
focus is clearly on the 16th and 17th centuries. After dealing with the early
church, other early "Protestant" witnesses, the erection of the
inquisition, Wycliffe, Huss and the Hussite wars, Wylie begins to chronicle
Protestant history primarily as it grew in various nations. The Netherlands, Scotland, Germany, England, Switzerland,
Sweden, Denmark, France, Poland, Bohemia, Hungary, Transylvania and various
other locales, all receive prominent and detailed notice. Geneva and the
Protestantism of the Waldensian valleys are also spotlighted. A whole section
is devoted to the Jesuits, exposing their demonic cruelty and aspirations in
overthrowing Reformation truth, persecuting the Reformers and unsettling the
civil systems of all the lands that they were allowed to enter. All major
(Westminster Assembly, the Solemn League and Covenant, the Synod of Dort, etc.)
and many minor Protestant victories are covered in the amazing accounts
documented by Wylie. James Arminius (Arminianism), Bloody (Queen) Mary, Charles
II, and other notorious figures are also covered in this comprehensive
chronicle. Whether recounting Luther's
burning of the Papal Bull "excommunicating" him or Calvin's refusing
of the Lord's supper (close communion)
to the Libertines of Geneva (who said they would kill him for doing so), the pages of this book provide soul-stirring testimony
to the international life and death struggle for the gospel of Christ that
became known as the Protestant Reformation.
As an added
bonus the pictures in these books are excellent for introducing children to
major historical events relating to the struggle, sacrifice and victory of
Christ's church on earth. The pictures (in
conjunction with the historical accounts) of Protestant martyrs giving their
lives for Christ have often made a permanent and godly impression upon both
young and old alike. Moreover, this history can be used as a
reference work (to gain an overview of the great controversy between the true
church of Christ and the false, Harlot church of Rome) or read in greater
detail to see the hand of God moving through His people and church throughout
the centuries (winning over and/or testifying against
various nations, tongues and kings, as we behold Christ's two witnesses
prophesying in the midst of the 1260 years of the great apostasy [Rev. 10:8-17]).
In our day,
when the Papal antichrist addresses the United Nations, is often the subject of
major news reports, and regularly meets with national civil leaders (and when
professing Protestants are defecting to "the whore of Babylon," and
signing "peace" treaties with this great enemy of Christ [to fight
cultural battles]), these books are needed more than ever. William Cunningham's words, though written many years ago,
should be heeded by all faithful Christians today, for he said, "[i]t is
quite evident, from the signs of the times, that the Popish controversy must be
fought over again... It is incumbent upon ministers of the gospel to prepare
themselves for the contest." Wylie's History of Protestantism will do much to prepare
all faithful Christians to once again apply the sword of the Spirit to the
Romish "MOTHER OF HARLOTS" who sits on seven mountains (Rev. 17:9)
and is "drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the
martyrs of Jesus" (Rev. 17:6).
Many
who have forgotten this history have already become easy prey for the
ecclesiatical beast of Revelation. Don't let ignorance of history cause you to
be torn by the claws of our adversary. "Be sober, be vigilant; because your
adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may
devour" (1 Pet. 5:8).

WYLIE, J.A.
The Papacy is the Antichrist (1888)
"The following demonstration is rested on
no narrow basis. Its two postulates, like two posterns, admit us into the
edifice, but they are not its foundations. The whole economy of Redemption,
and the whole course of History are the broad substructions on which the
argument is based and built up; and the author humbly submits that it cannot be
overturned, or the conclusion arrived at set aside, without dislocating and
shaking the structure of both Revelation and Providence. The same line of proof which establishes that Christ is
the promised Messiah, conversely applied, establishes that the Roman system is
the predicted Apostasy. In the life of Christ we behold the converse of what
the Antichrist must be; and in the prophecy of the Antichrist we are shown the
converse of what Christ must be, and was. And when we place the Papacy between
the two, and compare it with each, we find, on the one hand, that it is the
perfect converse of Christ as seen in His life; and, on the other, that it is
the perfect image of the Antichrist, as shown in the prophecy of him. We
conclude, therefore, that if Jesus of Nazareth be the Christ, the Roman Papacy
is the Antichrist" (Wylie's preface, pp. v-vi). This book
contains the classic teaching of the Protestant Reformation regarding
Antichrist (an integral part of that Reformation,
we might add -- as all the Reformed creeds and confessions attest). The easy-reading format and style make this book an
ideal introduction to this topic. For more detailed research on the
Papacy, by the same author, see Wylie's The Papacy: Its History, Dogmas,
Genius, and Prospects;
which in its day won first prize from the Evangelical Alliance for essays on
Popery. 176 pages.

head thereof; but is that Antichrist, that man of sin and son of perdition that
exalteth himself in the church against Christ and all that is called God."
John
Calvin (1509-1564) (Presbyterian)
"Daniel and Paul had
predicted that Antichrist would sit in the temple of God. The head of that
cursed and abominable kingdom, in the Western Church, we affirm to be the
Pope" (John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion, Vol. 2, pp. 314, 315, 1561 edition).
"Some persons think us too
severe and censorious when we call the Roman pontiff Antichrist. But those who
are of this opinion do not consider that they bring the same charge of
presumption against Paul himself, after whom we speak and whose language we
adopt... I shall briefly show that (Paul's words in II Thess. 2) are not
capable of any other interpretation than that which applies them to the
Papacy" (Ibid.
p. 410).
John
Knox (1505-1572) (Scottish Presbyterian)
John Knox wrote about "that
tyranny which the pope himself has for so many ages exercised over the
church." Along with Martin Luther, Knox finally concluded that the Papacy
was "the very antichrist, and son of perdition, of whom Paul speaks"
(John Knox, The Zurich Letters,
p. 199).
Martin
Luther (1483-1546) (Lutheran)
"Martin Luther was the
first to identify the papacy as such with the Antichrist. At first he
discounted the value of John's Apocalypse. But then he saw in it a revelation
of the Church of Rome as the deceiving Antichrist who secretly served Satan --
a view that was to become dogma for all Protestant Churches." Newsweek,
November 1, 1999. p. 71.
"Luther... proved, by the
revelations of Daniel and St. John, by the epistles of St. Paul, St. Peter, and
St. Jude, that the reign of Antichrist, predicted and described in the Bible,
was the Papacy ... And all the people did say, Amen! A holy terror seized their
souls. It was Antichrist whom they beheld seated on the pontifical throne. This
new idea, which derived greater strength from the prophetic descriptions
launched forth by Luther into the midst of his contemporaries, inflicted the
most terrible blow on Rome" (J. H. Merle D'aubigne's, History of the
Reformation of the Sixteen Century,
book 6, chapter 12, p. 215).
On August 20, 1520, Luther
declared, "We here are of the conviction that the papacy is the seat of
the true and real Antichrist" (LeRoy Froom, The Prophetic Faith of Our
Fathers, Vol. 2, p.
121).
Thomas
Cranmer (1489-1556) (Anglican)
"Whereof it followeth Rome
to be the seat of antichrist, and the pope to be very antichrist himself. I
could prove the same by many other scriptures, old writers, and strong
reasons" (Cranmer, Works, Vol. 1, pp. 6-7).
Cotton
Mather (1663-1728) (Congregational Theologian)
"The oracles of God
foretold the rising of an Antichrist in the Christian Church: and in the Pope
of Rome all the characteristics of that Antichrist are so marvelously answered
that if any who read the Scriptures do not see it, there is a marvelous blindness
upon them" (Cotton Mather, The Fall of Babylon, as cited in Froom's book, The
Prophetic Faith of Our Fathers,
Vol. 3, p. 113).
A
Great Cloud of Witnesses
"Wycliffe, Tyndale, Luther,
Calvin, Cranmer; in the seventeenth century, Bunyan, the translators of the
King James Bible and the men who published the Westminster and Baptist
confessions of Faith; Sir Isaac Newton, Whitfield, Jonathan Edwards; and more
recently Spurgeon, Bishop J.C. Ryle and Dr. Martin Lloyd-Jones; these men among
countless others, all saw the office of the Papacy as the antichrist"
(Michael de Semlyen, All Roads Lead to Rome, Dorchestor House Publications, p. 205,
1991).
"The Counter Reformation is
generally considered to have three aspects: the Jesuits, the Inquisition, and
the Council of Trent. In view of the significance of the Protestant apocalyptic
interpretation of history which prophetically pinpointed step by step the
events covering the whole Christian era from the beginning to the end (i.e.
historicism--RB), it seems justifiable to suggest a fourth aspect, namely the
praeteristic and futuristic interpretations launched by Catholic expositors as
a counterattack" (from the summary of Horae Apocalypticae resource #3 above).
"If contemporary Evangelical
leaders and their disciples discount and ignore these utterly basic prophetic
and historical facts, they must understand they are placing themselves outside
the stream of historic biblical Christianity. They are willingly divorcing
themselves from great men of the faith -- Wycliff, Huss, Luther, Tyndale,
Calvin, Cranmer, Latimer, Ridley, Bradford, Foxe, Bunyan, Newton, Edwards,
Whitefield, ... , Spurgeon, Ryle, and Lloyd-Jones to mention just a few"
(Richard Bennett, ex-Roman Catholic priest, cited from the article "The
Papacy and Islam," http://www.bereanbeacon.org/articles/papacy_and_islam.htm ).
WYLIE, JAMES A.
The Papacy: Its History,
Dogmas, Genius, and Prospects (1889 edition)
In its day, this book, of 572 pages, won the
Evangelical Alliance first prize for an essay on Popery. "With all we have read of Popery, we have yet met with
nothing in the English language which we regard to be so complete in itself,
and so overwhelmingly destructive to Romanism," noted the
Evangelical magazine. (Evangelical magazines of Wylie's day obviously knew who
their enemies were then; there are few that recognize this today. Some, in our
day, even teach that a return to Rome is advisable, thinking that an alliance
with idolaters will help free the land of social evils. In reality this will
only serve as a further provocation against "the Holy one of Israel,"
bringing more curses, wrath and guilt upon our land.).
Wylie's book combines the qualities of clear structure, vigorous logic, and
eloquent style and yet is written with an absence of unchristian passion and
prejudice -- making its argument all the more useful to those trapped in Rome's
web of deceit (or those seeking a fair and comprehensive treatment of this
massive topic). It is also indexed. When
this book first appeared in German, the Papists were careful to give it the
"silent treatment," lest an inquiring Papist should hear of it and be
inclined to read it. These same Romanists (later) also invoked the civil power
against it, so fearful were they of its contents.

Protestantism in Scotland
(1878)
For the period covered by this book, Scotland went from a nation of uncivilized
barbarians to national covenants with Christ, and then through many ups and
downs as various factions tried to destroy true Christianity. From darkness to
Hamilton, Wishart, Knox, and Melville, through to the Covenanters, the
Westminster Assembly and the tragic deception used by Charles II, Wylie's racy
style makes it hard to put this book down. Few other nations and periods of
history provide such edifying reading. Highlights include Knox's call to the
ministry, his interview with Queen Mary, his trial for treason, Melville's
work, the National and Solemn League and Covenant, the civil war, the
Westminster Assembly, and more. Book 24 (illustrated), from Wylie's The History
of Protestantism.

Story of the Covenant and the
Service of the Covenanters to the Reformation in Christendom and the Liberties
of Great Britain (1880)
A fine historical introduction to the battle for Godly government and liberty
against the forces of anti-Christian bondage (to national sin and Satanic
deception). The Covenanters are responsible, more than any other group
historically, for maintaining "the crown rights of King Jesus" --
even at peril of severe torture and the loss of their earthly lives. Their
covenanting principles are still the purest and most faithful form of
Christianity known to man, and the revival of these eminently Biblical views
are a sure hope for the future! For a more extensive "Camerionian"
treatment of this subject: Howie's Scots Worthies ($99.95-80%=19.99).

A Sermon on Covenanting
A classic Covenanter sermon on covenanting. It covers a number of the
Scriptural aspects of the continuing duty of covenanting -- which rests upon individuals,
churches and nations. Many objections to covenanting are also answered herein.
Wylie was the first Covenanter minister ordained in America in 1800. He also
authored the famous Two Sons of Oil,
defending the Covenanter position concerning ecclesiastical and civil
government, especially as it relates civilly to the United States and its
constitution. This sermon is ideal for those looking into the ordinance of
covenanting for the first time. 32 pages.

WYLIE, SAMUEL B.
The Two Sons of Oil; or, the
Faithful Witness for Magistracy and Ministry upon a Scriptural Basis (1850,
third edition)
A Covenanter classic opening Revelation
11:3-4 and Zechariah 4:14. It has been hailed as the "best
presentation of the position of the Covenanter Church that has been written."
Noting that the "[t]ime has been, when the
whole body of Presbyterians, in Scotland, England, and Ireland, unanimously
subscribed" to these principles, "[f]or civil and ecclesiastical reformation"
and that thousands bled and died for the glorious covenanted cause of civil and
ecclesiastical reformation; Wylie sets out to explain and defend
"that cause. Not because it is an ancient cause; not because many have
sealed it with their blood; but, because," as he says, "I thought it
the doctrine of the Bible, and the cause of Christ."
This book explains how to tell if
a government (especially a civil government) is faithful to Christ and thus to
be obeyed for conscience's sake. It also gives direction regarding when and how
to resist (and disassociate yourself from) governments which get their power
from "the beast."
Moreover, it gives clear testimony as to what
the Bible requires of civil magistrates, noting "that civil rulers
should exercise their power in protecting and defending the religion of Jesus." It also gives plain reasons why dissent from the
government of the United States (and other covenant breaking nations) is the
legitimate Scriptural pattern. All these ideas are intricately
intertwined with the Reformation understanding of eschatology and demonstrate
once again the importance of a proper understanding of the Reformation
eschatology of Scripture. 99 pages.
