In the history of the church's sanctification I don't believe there has been a more valuable extra-biblical resource and tool than the Puritan Hard Drive.
It holds some of the most priceless Reformed works of God-centered and Christ-glorifying truth that were ever penned.
Most students, ministers and scholars of the Bible would never personally acquire even half the literal number of books on the Puritan Hard Drive, much less the extreme caliber of its contents.
In God's providence modern day Christians have been chosen to be the recipients of both a theological and practical blessing. May we not squander it.

The Biblical View of
Self-Esteem, Self-Love, Self-Image
Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going? Familiar questions in our day and
age. But has our search for answers led us too far in the wrong direction: away
from our true position in Christ and toward a dangerous emphasis on self? This
book clears up the confusion caused by today's popular theology of selfism. How
to evaluate the modern movement promoting "self" and Psychology,
ideas now well entrenched in many churches. How to determine if this movement
has any biblical basis and how Christians can relate to these teachings.

The Meaning and Mode of
Baptism
Some of the propositions set forth in chapter 28 of the Westminster Confession
of Faith (Of Baptism) are as follows: "III. Dipping of the person into the
water is not necessary; but baptism is rightly administered by pouring or
sprinkling water upon the person. IV. Not only those that do actually profess
faith in and obedience unto Christ, but also the infants of one or both
believing parents are to be baptized. V. Although it be a great sin to contemn
or neglect this ordinance, yet grace and salvation are not so inseparably
annexed unto it as that no person can be regenerated or saved without it, or
that all that are baptized are undoubtedly regenerated. VI. The efficacy of baptism
is not tied to that moment of time wherein it is administered; yet,
notwithstanding, by the right use of this ordinance the grace promised is not
only offered, but really exhibited and conferred by the Holy Ghost, to such
(whether of age or infants) as that grace belongeth unto, according to the
counsel of God's own will, in his appointed time. VII. The sacrament of Baptism
is but once to be administered to any person." In this book Adams defends
these positions in an easy to read and incisive manner. This is without a doubt
the best short book on this topic, as it deals with all the major arguments
concerning both the meaning and the mode of baptism. It has been priced for the
widest possible distribution.

What are the Duties of
Parents and Children; and How are They to be Managed According to Scripture?
(1674, reprinted 1844)
This Puritan author writes, "My business is not to discuss the entity of
relations in their foundation and terms, which the philosopher is conversant
about; but to discourse (on) the efficacy of the chiefest in Christian
practice; that is, to inquire into the nature and management of those
reciprocal offices betwixt parents and children, which if well discharged
according to the sense of the divine oracles, do contribute most to the
happiness of human society, and give reputation to the communion of
saints." And that "their children may continue, and their seed shall
be established before" them (Psalm 102:28).

Works of Thomas Adams (3
volumes)
Adams (1600-1662) was considered "The Shakespeare of the Puritans"
for his magnificent and beautiful writing style.
The Encyclopedia Britannica,
1911 edition, notes,
"His
occasionally printed sermons, when collected in 1629, placed him beyond all
comparison in the very van of the preachers of England, and had something to do
with the shaping of John Bunyan.
He equals Jeremy Taylor
in brilliance of fancies, and Thomas Fuller in wit. Robert Southey calls him 'the
prose Shakespeare of Puritan theologians.' His numerous works display great
learning, classical and patristic, and are unique in their abundance of
stories, anecdotes, aphorisms and puns."
Joel Beeke quoted Adams in his
article "What is Reformed Experimental Preaching" in the following
words: "Christ is the sum of the whole Bible, prophesied, typified,
prefigured, exhibited, demonstrated, to be found in every leaf, almost in every
line, the Scriptures being but as it were the swaddling bands of the child
Jesus". Contains over 500 pages per volume.

ADDISON, L.
The Life and Death of Mahumed,
the author of the Turkish Religion, being an account of his tribe, parents,
birth, name, education, marriages, filthiness of life, Alcoran, first
proselytes, wars, doctrines, miracles, advancement, etc. 1679.
Lancelot
Addison, an English chaplain of the seventeenth century, here provides a brief account of Mohammed (which he spells "Mahumed"),
the founder of Islam, and his basic doctrine. It is written from a
Christian perspective, and is not tainted by political correctness.
One of the most
important aspects of Mohammed's life was the writing of the Koran (or
"Alcoran" in this book). Mohammed had a secretary who would write
down whatever Mohammed claimed to have received from God through the angel
Gabriel. Mohammed gave the message, but the secretary would write the actual
words. One of the secretaries was Abdalla Celen, a lapsed Jew. Abdalla realized, however, that Mohammed's supposed
messages from Gabriel were actually fake. To test this Abdalla
decided on the following course:
"that
whensoever he was commanded to write such and such verses, he would turn the
end of the verse to another meaning, changing the words and order, but not the
rhyme nor consonance. . . . And thus Abdalla for seven years continued changing
the end of the verses. And finding that Mahumed did not perceive the change, he
concluded, that if he had received them from God, and that if God had intended
them to be the immutable rule of life, the palpable changes made by him would
have been detected. Whereupon, Abdalla quitted his office, and reconciled
himself to his old religion" (pp. 41-42).
Regarding
his sexual behaviour, Mohammed may have been the Bill Clinton of his day. He had seven wives
"besides very many concubines. And though he confined his proselytes to four
wives, yet he laid not any such restraint upon himself; having received a
license from Gabriel to marry as many as he pleased, and a power to divorce
them when he listed. But it gave no small scandal to the Moors, when he gave it
out, that to have as many wives as he pleased, was an indulgence granted him in
particular, in token of the affection God bore him above other men; which
blasphemous assertion, was out of fear tamely yielded to by his timorous
adherents. So that when ever Mahumed had a mind to a new bed-fellow, the angel
Gabriel brought him a revelation for so doing" (p. 27).
Clearly,
this kind of lifestyle proves that Mohammed was not a prophet of the true God. "He had seven
wives, besides concubines. He was unsatiable in his lusts, and so enormous
therein, that he spared no man's bed. The filthiness of whole life, was a plain
demonstration of the falseness of his prophecy, according to the rules of
trying false prophets laid down by Maimonides" (p. 81).
And
yet, the emphasis on carnal delights apparently contributed to the success of
his religious enterprise. That is, "the sensual liberty allowed by Mahumed, may
be duly accounted among the main causes of the advancement of his Imposture:
for he did not grant his sectaries only in this life a prodigious filthiness
and carnality, but he promised them the like in Paradise, as I have before
mentioned: And men (we know) are more allured and persuaded with sensual
enjoyments, whereof they have certain experience, than with the promises of
spiritual delights, presented only to their hopes, and for which, present and
sensible pleasures must in the mean time be forsaken" (p. 136).
Towards
the end of this book, Addison suggests that Mohammed was allowed into this
world with his evil religion as God's punishment against His apostatizing
church. "It
would be too bold an intrusion into the secrets of Providence, to enquire why
God should suffer this monstrous Imposter, from so contemptible a beginning, to
grow up to be a scourge and disturber of the whole world; which with most
safety is to be ascribed to His Power and Wisdom, who makes the worst of men
serviceable to His Providence, in making them the Executioners of His anger,
which we may conclude was now fearfully incensed against those who had so
undutifully prevaricated the Heavenly Rule of good life, and had no less
violated the unity of the Gospel by schism, through their want of charity, than
they had prostituted the Faith thereof through heresy, for lack of Truth"
(p. 132). As evidence of this he points out that
"the Mahumedan conquests at first chiefly seized on those regions where
Christianity was most pestered with heresies" (p. 134).
In light of the
current terrorist war by Mohammed's most dedicated followers against innocent
civilians in the US and elsewhere, this book would be a helpful tool for many
Christians.

ALEXANDER,
ARCHIBALD
Evidences of the Authenticity, Inspiration,
and Canonical Authority of the Holy Scriptures (1838)
This book (of 390 pages) is an
example of the old Princeton apologetic, having been written by one of the
early Princeton theologians. Human reason is accorded a major role in this form
of apologetic. Along this line Alexander writes,
In
receiving therefore the most mysterious doctrines of revelation, the ultimate
appeal is to reason. Not to determine whether she could have discovered these
truths; not to declare whether considered in themselves they appear probable;
but to decide whether it is not more reasonable to believe what God speaks,
than to confide in our own crude and feeble conceptions (p. 11).
The first part of the book thus
argues for the reasonableness of Christianity in general, and Christian beliefs
such as revelation, miracles, and the inspiration of the Bible in particular.
The second part of the
book deals with the canon of Scripture. It discusses how the books of the Old and New Testament
were determined to be authentic, and why the Apocryphal books are not to be
accepted as canonical. Regarding the New Testament, the following is noted:
Three
methods of determining what books of the New Testament are canonical, have been
adopted by different persons. The first is, the authority of the Church, that
is, the Church of Rome, which arrogates this authority to herself. The second
is, internal evidence, which some have deemed sufficient, without the aid of
external testimony. The third is, to refer to historical testimony, as has been done in regard to the Old
Testament (p. 337, emphases added).
Alexander, of course, rejects
the first method, and is cautious about the second. For
him, historical testimony is the key to determining which New Testament books
are canonical.
While,
therefore, internal evidence ought not to be rejected, but may afford much
light as an auxiliary source of evidence, our principal
reliance must be upon historical testimony: and it is a matter of thankfulness
that this is so complete, as to leave little more to be desired for the
satisfaction of every impartial inquirer (p. 338, emphases added).
There are many other topics (like
the preservation of the text, prophecies, etc.) which Alexander deals with,
insuring that Christians investigating the development of the canon will find
much of interest here.

A Treatise on Justification
by Faith (1837)
Justification by faith played a large role in throwing off the shackles of
Popery and superstition early in the first Reformation, especially among the
Lutherans. And "(a)lthough Calvin refers to justification by faith as 'the
principal article of the Christian religion,' it seems that he is acknowledging
its importance to an earlier generation, rather than stating its importance to
his own theological position. Justification is not demonstrably of central
importance to Calvin's conception of the Christian faith. Nevertheless, the
issues raised by the doctrine of justification remained active, even in
Calvin's day" (Oxford Encyclopedia of the Reformation, vol. 2, p. 365). In our day this issue
bears reinvestigating in light of the predominance and resurgence of Romanism
and the heresies which follow close on her heels, Arminianism and eventually
Pelagianism or even Universalism. In our modern context this book should
provide a very helpful shorter statement of the classic Protestant position
pertaining to what Alexander himself terms "the most important question
which can possibly be conceived." 50 pages.

Family Worship: A Biblical
Duty (1847)
It would be almost impossible to overemphasis the importance of daily family
worship. It is a blessed privilege for those who have known it as children
and/or adults. It is foundational to any lasting revival or reformation. It is
a duty commanded by God in Scripture, and to neglect it is, without a doubt,
sinful. The Westminster Divines made it clear, in their amazing Directory for
Family Worship, that obstinacy in the sin of neglecting family worship should
lead ó where there are faithful elders -- to the head of the offending house
being "suspended and debarred from the Lord's supper." This book gives
the nature, warrant, and history of family worship in easy to read large print.

Family Worship: Its Influence
Over All of Life
Some have postulated that the Reformation would have fizzled out in no time had
it not been for the faithful men who led their families in daily worship.
Nothing is more calculated to enhanced and abet all other spiritual duties than
daily family worship. It will curtail divorce and domestic violence, both of
which were unheard of among the Puritans because of their love for the use of
the means of grace within this setting, and help lead many individuals -- and
ultimately nations -- to Christ. This book covers the influence of family worship
on the individual piety of parents and children. It shows it to be a means of
intellectual improvement and a bond of domestic harmony and love. Men, if you
really want to change the world, start with your own immediate sphere of
influence and responsibility. Preparing your own heart before the Lord and
instituting daily family worship will do more good than most can imagine! This
is your commanded duty.

Fingerprints of Creation (Video)
Scientist Robert Gentry has
discovered that granites contain beautiful microscopic coloration halos
produced by the radioactive decay of primordial polonium. According to every basic principle of evolutionary
theory, these halos shouldn't be there. Polonium radiohalos indicate that the
earth was formed instantly and thus totally refute evolutionary theory. Furthermore this very evidence, though published in
notable scientific journals and used as testimony in courts of law, has yet to
be challenged by any evolutionist. The remarkable story of the
discovery of this "finger print of creation" is told here. 34

Hells Bells: The Dangers of
Rock 'n' Roll
A shocking expose of the message and medium that has mesmerized whole
generations. This is an incredibly intense biblical look at one of the major
forces in our culture today. "When modes of music change, the fundamental
laws of the state change with them," stated Plato. The degenerate
communist dictator Vladimir Lenin noted the potential power for evil in music,
when he said, "One quick way to destroy a society is through its
music." Moreover, for Christians, music is an extremely important
expression of faith and worship, as we note that God has providentially
positioned the Psalter (His divinely inspired song-book) right in the center of
the Bible. But it is clear that music can be a sanctifying or seducing power.
Satan has made full use of his musical prowess through rock and its promoters
and this video unmasks the devil's spiritual power as the driving force behind
rock and roll. Contrasting the message of rock with the Word of God, rock's
seductive nature is laid bare in these instructive videos, thus providing a
clear warning to those who are still entangled in its demonic clutches.
First-hand experience coupled with several years of research has produced this
exhaustive analysis and these videos have now been seen by millions. It is considered
the definitive work on Rock music from a Christian perspective. One drawback
that we should warn you about is that these videos contain some pictures of an
effeminate, long-haired man (the Roman Catholic "Jesus") who is
clearly supposed to be the Lord Jesus Christ. We note this violation of the
second commandment so that you do not purchase these videos unaware of this
fact. The videos are also quite explicit and are not suitable for younger
children; parental discretion is strongly advised. We leave you with a telling
quote from the study guide, "A lot of people want to say 'It's just music,
I'm not paying attention to the words..." This is a total cop-out, the
scriptures practically scream at us that we are to have NO fellowship with evil...
Consider the following parable: A man is married to a woman named Mary and Mary
has dedicated her life to fighting pollution. The man comes home one day and
says, 'Mary, I've got the greatest new album; you won't believe how hot the
guitarist is! One thing though, the words kind of stink so don't pay any
attention to them.' As the CD plays Mary hears lyrics advocating the rape of
the environment and even making fun of her by name for her anti-pollution
efforts. She walks over and picks up the cover and it's got a picture of the
group sticking her face into an oil slick! In Mary's mind (and really anybody
else's), who does the man love more, Mary or his music? So Jesus must ask of a
person who says he loves Him but listens to songs that mock him, tell lies, or extol
the very sins that nailed Him to the cross." (p. 50).

Conscience with the Powers
and Cases Thereof (1639)
Translated out of the Latin into English, this extremely rare item is in
excellent condition (i.e. the print is very good, making it easy to read). The
work is divided into five books, expanding on the second part of his famous Marrow
of Divinity. Book one
contains the definition of conscience. Book two deals with cases of conscience
which concern the state of man. Book three expounds man's duty in general. Book
four explains Ames' view concerning conscience and the duty of man towards God
and book five treats of the duties of man towards his neighbor. For the
Scottish Presbyterian view concerning these matters see Samuel Rutherford's
amazing Free Disputation Against Pretended Liberty of Conscience ($199.95-90%=$US19.99).

AMES,
WILLIAM
A Fresh Suit Against Human Ceremonies in God's
Worship (1633)
A rare facsimile from this
Calvinist divine who was one of the most acute controversialists of his age. This
highly influential Puritan theologian was assistant to the president of the
Synod of Dort and
Professor of Divinity at Franecker. He died in 1633. In
this massive work, Ames aims at vindicating the Lord's sovereign Kingship in
matters of worship. The summary and general thrust of the detailed
and precise argumentation found in this book is beautifully encapsulated by the
words inscribed on its title page, "I hate vayn inventions: but thy law
doe I love" (Ps. 119:113). Almost 700 pages.

The Use and Abuse of
Diversions (1733)
A sermon on Luke 19:23: "And he called his ten servants, and delivered them
ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come." Contains two
appendices showing that the stage in particular is an unchristian diversion.
Commenting on the modern equivalent of the stage (and the movie theater could
be included here also), giving us an example of how "the children of this
world are in their generation wiser than the children of light," Postman
writes,
"Television is, after all, a form of
graven imagery far more alluring than a golden calf. I suspect (though I have
no external evidence of it) that Catholic objections to Bishop Fulton Sheen's
theatrical performances on television (of several years back) sprang from the
impression that viewers were misdirecting their devotions, away from God and
toward Bishop Sheen, whose piercing eyes, awesome cape and stately tones were
as close a resemblance to a deity as charisma allows. Television's strongest
point is that it brings personalities into our hearts, not abstractions into
our heads. That is why CBS' programs about the universe were called 'Walter
Cronkite's Universe.' One would think that the grandeur of the universe needs
no assistance from Walter Cronkite. One would think wrong. CBS knows that
Walter Cronkite plays better on television than the Milky Way. And Jimmy
Swaggart plays better than God. For God exists only in our minds (please
disregard Postman's theologically imprecise language in referring to God--RB),
whereas Swaggert is there, to be seen, admired, adorned. Which is why he is the
star of the show. And why Billy Graham is a celebrity, and why Oral Roberts has
his own university, and why Robert Schuller has a crystal cathedral all to
himself. If I am not mistaken, the word for this is blasphemy" (Amusing
Ourselves to Death, p
123, $15.96, softcover).
Anderson's book (of 224 pages)
gives more insight into this very pertinent, pressing and prevalent subject.
Are you of the spirit of the Psalmist when he declares, "I will set no
wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall

ANDERSON,
JAMES
Ladies of the Covenant (1851)
Memoirs of
distinguished Scottish female characters (some who were martyred), embracing the
period of the covenant and the persecution. The introduction notes the importance of the lives of these
courageous women, when it states:
They
have especially by the magnanimity with which they suffered in the cause of
truth, emphatically taught us the important principle that we are in all
things and at all times to do what is right; and as to the disapprobation, opposition, and persecution
of men, in whatever way manifested, or to whatever extent, we are to let that
take its chance, a principle, the importance of which it is difficult to
over-estimate; which lies at the foundation of all that is great and good in
character; which has enabled the greatest and the best men, by the blessing of
God, to achieve the great purposes they have formed for advancing the highest
interests of mankind, and upon which it is necessary for the good soldier of
Christ to act in every age, in an age in which the church enjoys tranquillity,
as well as when she suffers persecution.
Samuel
Rutherford's (and others) correspondence with these exceptional Christian women
is noted throughout. 494
pages of soul-stirring history!

ANDERSON,
JOHN
Alexander and Rufus; or a Series of Dialogues
on Church Communion, in Two Parts. Part 1: Vindication of Scriptural Church
Communion in Opposition to Latitudinarian Schemes. Part 2: Defence of the
Communion Maintained in the Secession Church (1862)
The close communion
doctrine of the Reformation continues to be much misunderstood and maligned in
our day. The
false ecumenists (and theological egalitarians and pluralists) of our day
continue to batter away at this foundation of the Reformation doctrine of the
church -- while even many of those that profess to be the heirs of the
Reformation are found to be ignorant regarding this point. Any doctrine of communion which does
not take into account the biblical command to "be of one mind" (cf.
Rom. 15:6, 2 Cor. 13:11, Phil. 1:27, Phil. 2:2, 1 Pet. 3:8) at a corporate,
visible level is skewed from the beginning. In short, latitudinarian schemes of open communion (which
only include the so-called "essentials" of the faith) are schismatic
(i.e. if we do not confuse "schism" with "separation").
Schismatic schemes promoting
open communion (of which paedocommunion is presently at the head), attempt to
"dumb down" (to a greater or lesser degree) the requirements for
partaking at the Lord's table. Loose and latitudinarian schemes of communion
lead to churches that stand for little -- or nothing -- over time; while a
Scripturally regulated close communion tends to the exact opposite end.
Anderson makes this very point in his preface to this book, "corruption is the native consequence of latitudinarian
schemes, (while) scriptural order in sacramental communion tends to make the
visible church a heaven on earth to the faithful, terrible as an army with
banners to her enemies, and to her King and Head for a name, for a praise and
for glory."
If you love the purity and peace
of Christ's church and agree with the words of John Calvin, when he wrote,
"We are only contending about the true and lawful constitution of the
church, required in the communion not only of the sacraments (which are the
signs of profession) but also especially of doctrine" (Institutes, 4.2.12), then you will find a meaty
meal in Alexander and Rufus
-- for the author not only deals with the larger questions related to church
communion, but also weaves into the fabric of this book many specific threads
relating to practical applications and doctrinal controversies. Moreover,
notwithstanding a couple of peculiar doctrinal foibles originating from the
Seceder camp, in opposition to the Covenanters (especially regarding civil
government and some points of the law), a
plethora of subjects relative to the Reformed view of communion, church union,
testimony-bearing, etc., are all dealt with here -- and these points
are given the kind of attention (along with Scriptural and historical accuracy)
that will be greatly appreciated among those familiar with the precise views of
the "old dissenters" of Scottish origin.
In short, Alexander
and Rufus
gives us an excellent defense of biblically regulated close communion, which
Anderson shows to be God's ordained method of promoting truth, unity and
Reformation.
Anderson also does an excellent
job concerning: Calvin's plan for promoting a union among the churches (p.
151ff.); the place of confessions and confessional subscription (pp. 85, 179);
covenanting (pp. 358-384); separation (pp. 92, 132); worship (pp. 10-13, 87,
107, 142, 155, 161-164, 456ff., etc.); the marks of the church (p. 132ff.);
uniformity (pp. 7, 103, 168, 205); the Westminster Assembly (p. 169ff); the
Dutch views (p. 158f.); distinctions between essentials and non-essentials (p.
168); the so-called "glorious revolution" of 1688 (p. 263); the
French Reformed churches (p. 156); the covenanted Reformation (p. 253);
discipline (p. 103); attainments (pp. 11, 93, 137, 162ff., 206, etc.); the
government of the church (p. 123); the so-called "Apostle's creed"
(pp. 100-104); the Belgic Confession (pp. 135-138); councils in the ancient
church (p. 104); the Donatists (p. 112); the forsaking of sin, false doctrine,
and false teachers (pp. 92, 132); occasional hearing (p. 83); Owen against open
communion (p. 207); sectarianism (p. 92); and much, much more.
On the topic of
church and sacramental communion you are unlikely to find many other books with
as much solid information. Recommended for advanced study. Indexed, 518 pages.

A Catechism, Setting Forth
the Principles of Public Covenanting (1889)
On covenanting the preface perceptively notes, "In this exercise the
covenanter engages to no new duty but declares upon oath that he believes the
doctrine and practice of this church to be the very truth of God, and engages
in the strength of promised grace to continue faithful to Christ and his cause.
The unrest and spirit of change that moves the church of today is the chief
reason why this ordinance is so much opposed. It carries with it a certainty of
knowledge, a fixedness of principle, and steadfast in profession that is
counter to the Spirit of our times. A declining church is not a covenanting
one; it (covenanting--RB) has only been practiced by those churches that were
seeking to hold that to which they had attained." A concise and easy-to-read
introduction to covenanting. 88 pages.

Overcoming Division and
Unifying the Visible Church: A Rebuke Against the Sin of Occasional Hearing
(1794)
A sermon on "Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err
from the words of knowledge" (Prov. 19:27). "What is aimed at in this
discourse is, to strike at a principal root of the numerous divisions now in
the visible church. It teaches that we ought not to be in a state of separation
from any church-communion, but upon such grounds as are scriptural; and upon
such considerations, as involving the declarative glory of God, are of
inconceivable and infinite importance. Were this doctrine embraced, there would
be no separate church-communions upon trivial pretences; or for the sake of
religious tenets or usages in the worship of God which have no foundation in
his word; no separate church-communions on account of local customs, uncertain
opinions, or uninstituted ceremonies; no separate church-communions founded on
the narrow and interested views of a faction. What is here attempted is a
seasonable application of the cautions, with which the scriptures abound,
against false teachers. To direct church-members to the right use and
application of such cautions will be the endeavor of the faithful ministers of
Christ; an endeavor which is rendered peculiarly necessary by the corruptions
which prevail in the present (divided--RB) state of the visible church. Those
who reckon that practical religion is not concerned in the subject of this
discourse should consider that true believers have it for their distinguishing
character, that they abhor false doctrine, and avoid communion with the
teachers of it (John 10:5, Rev. 14:4),"
notes the author. 24 pages.

The Scripture Doctrine of the
Appropriation Which is in the Nature of Saving Faith, Stated and Illustrated; in
Several Discourses (1793, 1849)
"The following sermons," writes Robertson, "appear to me the
best I have every seen on the subject; and I have authority to declare, that
this is the judgement of several ministers, of very respectable character, in
the religious society to which I belong; and also of several others of
different denominations, whose acknowledged reputation, and attachment to the
interests of religion, would be a powerful recommendation of these Discourses
to the perusal of their Christian friends and connections, both in North and
South Britain." Foundational teaching on salvation and righteousness for
which the author declares, "The faith which is described in the ensuing
Sermons, prevailed in the hearts of the patriarches and prophets, martyrs and
confessors, by which they subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained
promises; it is that faith which leads the soul directly to Christ, as offered
in the promise of the gospel, without waiting for any previous qualifications,
and to improve him for sanctification as well as justification, by looking unto
him for all the endowments necessary thereunto." Very pertinent to the
"free offer" controversy and all Calvinist evangelistic endeavors.

Vindiciae Cantus Dominici: Or,
A Vindication of the Doctrine Taught in a Discourse on the Divine Ordinance of
Singing Psalms (1793)
Because the author contends that "the welfare of the church and her
members is deeply concerned in the preservation of the purity of God's
worship," he here defends the old paths of Protestant worship in
opposition to the will-worship of Popery, Socinianism and Arminianism. Herein
he shows how the singing of songs other than the Psalms (in public worship)
violates the second commandment, dishonors God and brings His wrath upon
individuals, churches and nations. Anderson also answers a number of objections
against exclusive Psalmody which are still common today; for example the
objection, "with respect to the nature of singing, as if there were no difference
between it and prayer, except in the manner of performance." This is a
valuable contribution to the defense of exclusive Psalmody. 184 pages.

ARROWSMITH,
JOHN
The Covenant Avenging Sword Brandished (1643)
This famous sermon (of 32
pages), on Leviticus 26:25, "I shall bring a sword upon you, that shall
avenge the quarrel of my covenant," (by one of the more prominent men that
was shortly thereafter called to the Westminster Assembly) was preached
"Before the Honorable (English--RB) House of Commons, At Their Late Solemn
Fast, January 26(1643)". It demonstrates that
it is the Scriptural duty of nations and their rulers to covenant with Christ
and to seek God's glory in all things -- which is especially important
in the case of civil leaders in their office as civil leaders. For, as
Arrowsmith shows, if this is not done (with godly zeal), God's wrath (in the
form of blindness to the truth, in a lack of fear of the judgment that is to
come, in storms and wars and other calamities, etc.) will be poured out upon
those nations which refuse to "kiss the Son" by obeying and
covenanting with Him.
Be
wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve
the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry,
and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are
all they that put their trust in him (Ps. 2:10-12).
In this sermon Arrowsmith also
summons the English parliament to new obedience to Christ. Some suggest that
Arrowsmith may have been the main shaper of the Shorter Catechism. "Cotton
Mather says... 'everything of Arrowsmith is admirable'... He was clearly
respected as both a preacher and a scholar by the (Westminster--RB) Assembly,
which he repeatedly summoned to unity and diligence in its work" (Barker, Puritan
Profiles, p. 148).

The Equity of the Solemn League and Covenant
Justified, Against an Infectious and Libellous Pamphlet: Entitled, The Iniquity
of the late Solemn League and Covenant Discovered (1644)
This brief (10 page) piece is a
refutation of an anti-Covenanter tract. The anti-Covenanter tract argued that
the content of the Solemn League and Covenant is sinful, and therefore those
who took the Covenant need to repent. The alleged sin in the Covenant is that
it binds people to be seditious against the king and to oppose the historic
prelatical church government (i.e., spiritual tyranny) in England. In refuting
these allegations, the anonymous writer points out that the Covenant actually
binds its adherents to defend the king who, at that time, was "being seduced
by evil Counselors, and such as have a design to alter our Religion, invade our
Liberties, and bring in Popery" (pp. 6-7). The
Covenant upheld the true government and liberties of England, and thus was not
in any way seditious. Furthermore, the elimination of prelacy was
not in any way sinful. Prelacy was "in the
opinion of the most and best Protestants unquestionable and obvious to all men,
to be but of human institution" (p. 5). Regarding the prelates, "all reformed Churches have expelled
them, as incompatible with Reformation" (p. 6).
In sum, the Solemn
League and Covenant binds people to be good Christians. "In a word the
duty is such that God hath ordained, the matter is such as God approveth, and
the consequence will be such as God hath promised, the accomplishment of our
peace and happiness in this life, and the final consummation of it in that
which is to come" (p. 13).
"Take it then reader and
swear to it" (p. 13).

A Modest Apology for the Conduct of Seceders,
in Refusing to Join in Christian Communion with Sectarians, Latitudinarians, etc.
Who Have Departed From the Purity of Reformation Once Attained to in these
Kingdoms
An exceedingly rare work
published in 1773. Sets forth a strong case for
separation from all bodies that are backslidden from the work of covenanted
reformation, as it was attained during the days of the Westminster Assembly,
and as set forth in the Westminster Confession of Faith and its related
documents (regarding the government, worship, doctrine and discipline of
Christ's church). Denounces the
"detestable indifference or neutrality" of not maintaining covenant
obligations, which bind all reformers, "to endeavour the extirpation of
all superstition, heresy, schism, and whatsoever should be found contrary to
sound doctrine." Also proves that there is no liberty or
love that is contrary to God's Word.
Maintains Christian charity throughout by
distinguishing between loving the persons in error, and taking part with, or
encouraging them in their sinful confederacies or actions.
A great work on the subjects of
purity, faithfulness and separation. It is in keeping with the sentiments
expressed in the Reformed Presbytery's Act, Declaration and Testimony which states,
The
first cry against the presbytery and its members was 'schism, schismatics.'
This charge was promptly and publicly met and refuted, by showing from the
Scriptures, that schism 'is in the body,'
1 Cor. 12:26; and from the approved writings of our covenanting fathers, that 'sometimes to avoid schism, we must separate.'
Our worthy ancestors knew better than to adopt the vocabulary of papal Rome.
Besides, 'the majority making defection are the real separatists' (Samuel
Rutherford).

ANONYMOUS
Protesters Vindicated: Or, A Just and
Necessary Defence of Protesting Against, and Withdrawing from This National
Church of Scotland on Account of Her Many Gross and Continued Defections (1716)
The title continues: "More
particularly, her approving of, and going into the legal establishment of the
Prelatic constitutions of England. The generality of ministers swearing, in the
Oath of Abjuration, to maintain Erastianism, Prelacy, and English Popish
Ceremonies. Non-Jurants joining with Jurants, judicially approving that
practice to be free of scandal. The Church's establishing tyranny in
government, against all who will not join in communion with her, and approve
her practices without redress of grievances. Wherein these and several other
causes of withdrawing are proven to be justly chargeable on the Church,
demonstrated to be contrary to the Word of God and Reformed principles of this
Church, and just grounds of withdrawing, and setting up judicatures distinct
from her; and the objections of Jurants and others fully answered." This
is a classic, detailed statement of the old covenanted principles and the
biblical attainments of the second Reformation (like the Solemn League and
Covenant, the Westminster standards, etc.). It is also an excellent defense against the modern
malignants who counsel Christ's children to remain in the backsliding and
covenant breaking denominations that abound in our day. Very Rare! 270 pages.

The Mystery of Magistracy
Unveiled: or, God's Ordinance of Magistracy Asserted, Cleared, and Vindicated
from Heathenish Dominion, Tyrannous and Antichristian Usurpation, Despisers of
Dignities, and Contemners of Authorities
Though the author is unknown, this work has been thought by some to have been
written by George Gillespie. It is a fine introduction to second Reformation
thought on civil government. Some sample headings extracted from its pages
include: "Of the qualifications required in the Judge or Ruler;"
"Of the promised blessing that is to attend the latter days in a righteous
rule and ruler;" "Of the judgement and curse attending no rule, or an
evil ruler;" "Of the people's duty under wicked rulers, both towards
God and them." 28 pages.

ASSOCIATE
PRESBYTERIAN MAGAZINE
The Ancient and Modern Mode of Singing the
Psalms (Sept., 1863)
Historically demonstrates how
the Old Testament saints, the early New Testament Christians and almost all
Presbyterians (after adopting the Westminster Standards) sang the Psalms by
"lining them out" (e.g. see the Westminster Directory for Public
Worship). Musical instruments, a Papal innovation,
were also unheard of among faithful Reformers and "denominated the ensigns
of Baal." Basically a blast against "all the refined idolatries of
the churches" of the author's time. It also lays out the numerous
advantages of lining out the Psalms -- especially for including
younger(pre-reading age) children in the praises of God.

Amusements and Levity: A
Pastoral Letter
Remembering that the word "amuse" literally means "no-think,"
this is a very useful resource for our day -- when even ministers are found to
publicly violate Ephesians 5:4. The authors, however, are careful to
distinguish between cheerfulness and levity. They note, "We mean a spirit
of levity, as engendered or fostered by indulgence in frivolous amusements. We
wish not to be understood as setting ourselves against every species of
youthful amusement. We do not look for the gravity of old age in the morning of
life, not do we think that the religion of the Bible requires it. Christianity,
rightly understood, has nothing to do with a demure preciseness of manner, or
an affection of singularity, which God does not require. Cheerfulness,
especially in youth, is perfectly compatible with spirit of the Bible; and as far
as amusements are rational in their character, moral in their nature and
tendency, rightly timed and enjoyed in moderation, we have nothing to object.
But cheerfulness and levity belong to different families, and whenever the
former is suffered to degenerate into the latter, the consequences must be
evil" (pp. 2-3).

The City of God (2 volumes,
1872 edition)
A new translation by Marcus Dods. In the preface Dods calls this "among
the few greatest books of all time." He also notes that "it effectually
introduces us to the most influential of theologians, and the greatest popular
teacher; to a genius that cannot nod for many lines together; to a reasoner
whose dialect is more formidable, more keen and sifting, than that of Socrates
or Aquinas; to a saint whose ardent and genuine devotional feeling bursts up
through the severest argumentation; to a man whose kindliness and wit,
universal sympathies and breadth of intelligence, lend piquancy and vitality to
the most abstract dissertation."
Rome having been stormed and sacked by the Goths
under Alaric their king, the worshipers of false gods, or pagans, as we
commonly call them, made an attempt to attribute this calamity to the Christian
religion, and began to blaspheme the true God with even more than their wonted
bitterness and acerbity. It was this which kindled my zeal for the house of
God, and prompted me to undertake the defense of the city of God against the
charges and misrepresentations of its assailants. This work was in my hands for
several years, owing to the interruptions occasioned by many other affairs
which had a prior claim on my attention, and which I could not defer.
However, this great undertaking was at last
completed in twenty-two books. Of these, the first five refute those who fancy
that the polytheistic worship is necessary in order to secure worldly
prosperity, and that all these overwhelming calamities have befallen us in
consequence of its prohibition. In the following five books I address myself to
those who admit that such calamities have at all times attended, and will at
all times attend, the human race, and that they constantly recur in forms more
or less disastrous, varying only in the scenes, occasions, and persons on whom
they light, but, while admitting this, maintain that the worship of the gods is
advantageous for the life to come. In these ten books, then, I refute these two
opinions, which are as groundless as they are antagonistic to the Christian
religion.
But that no one might have occasion to say, that
though I had refuted the tenets of other men, I had omitted to establish my
own, I devote to this object the second part of this work, which comprises
twelve books, although I have not scrupled, as occasion offered, either to
advance my own opinions in the first ten books, or to demolish the arguments of
my opponents in the last twelve. Of these twelve books, the first four contain
an account of the origin of these two cities -- the city of God, and the city
of the world. The second four treat of their history or progress; the third and
last four, of their deserved destinies. And so, though all these twenty-two
books refer to both cities, yet I have named them after the better city, and
called them The City of God.

AUGUSTINE,
AURELIUS
Lectures on the Gospel of John (1873
edition, 2 volumes)
One of the greatest church
fathers, Darling writes that Augustine's works "discover a vast extent of
genius, great accuracy and penetration, accompanied with much force and
energy" (Cylopaedia Bibliographica, p. 134). This set on John covers a vast number of topics
including comments on the sweetness of knowing Christ, Satan's judgement, the
Father seen in Christ, sanctification in the truth, the joy of the Lord, Christ
before Pilate, the Arian and Sabellian heresies, the cross of Christ, how men
become sons of God, the sin of rebaptizing, standards for ministers, Christ
clearing the temple, the Bride of Christ, Judas, Christ's equality with God the
Father, the last judgment, the Christian's use of his mind, Christ rebuking
unbelief, the Donatists, how Jesus baptized, faith, the will, service, the law,
abiding in the Father's love, and much more. 1038 pages.

On the Profit of Believing
(c. 391)
This is one of the first books Augustine wrote as a Presbyter. Augustine wrote
it to one of his friends who had been deceived by the Manichees. It is believed
that his friend was granted repentance from this error; partially due, no doubt
(from the perspective of human means), to this work.

AUGUSTINE
On the Trinity (c. 391)
Revised and annotated, with an
introductory essay by W.G.T. Shedd. Shedd states
that "this particular treatise is perhaps as pregnant and suggestive as
any that Augustine, or any other theologian, ever composed. The doctrine
of the Trinity is the most immense of all the doctrines of religion. It is
foundational theology. Christianity, in the last analysis, is Trinitarian...
The Trinity is the constitutive idea of the evangelical theology, and the
formative idea of the evangelical experience... Mysterious as it is, the
Trinity of Divine Revelation is the doctrine that holds in it all the hope of
man; for it holds within it the infinite pity of the Incarnation and the
infinite mercy of the Redemption."

Creed (c. 393)
This "work constitutes an exposition of the several clauses of the
so-called Apostles' Creed. The questions concerning the mutual relations of the
three Persons in the Godhead are handled with greatest fullness; in connection
with which, especially in the use made of the analogies of Being, Knowledge,
and Love, and in the cautions thrown in against certain applications of these
and other illustrations taken from things of human experience, we come across
sentiments which are also repeated in the City of God, the books on the
Trinity, and others of his doctrinal writings" (Introductory Note).

A Treatise on the Gift of
Perseverance (c. 428)
One of Augustine's anti-Pelagian works, this is the second book of his
treatise, "On the Predestination of the Saints." Perseverance, as a
gift of God, is an integral part of the doctrine and practice of the Augustinian
system of soteriology; it also underlies a proper understanding of assurance
and leads to a powerful Christian testimony.

A Treatise on Grace and Free
Will (c. 426)
In this work we see laid some of the major foundations of the Reformation of
the sixteenth century. Comments from this and similar productions of
Augustine's pen appear often in the writings of John Calvin; and many other
Reformers are known to have tasted of the teaching of God's sovereign grace in
the works of Augustine (as can be seen in their numerous quotations from his
writings in their books, letters and tracts). This is one of Augustine's
anti-Pelagian works and includes an extract from Augustine's "Retractions"
regarding "De Gratia et Libero Arbitrio."

AUGUSTINE
A Treatise on the Predestination of the Saints (c. 428)
Augustine was the
great forerunner to the Reformation and it was on books like this that Luther,
Calvin, and the other magisterial Reformers cut their teeth. "This treatise is the first portion
of a work, of which the following, On the Gift of Perseverance, is the second... (these titles) were
called out by two long letters, one from Prosper and the other from Hilary,
acquainting Augustine with the Semi-Pelagian outbreak in Southern Gaul, and
earnestly beseeching his aid in meeting it" (Editor's note). The corrupted demon seed of Pelagianism and
Semi-Pelagianism (later being refined into Arminianism), being just newly
planted by the wicked one in Augustine's day, has grown into a massive tree in
our day. Its poison fruit now feeds most of the branches of ecclesiastical
antichrist: from Rome, to the liberal Protestant churches and the cults, and
now even reaching all the way into the very heart of so-called
"evangelical" Protestant chruches (of all varieties). This soul
destroying heresy has reached pandemic proportions among professing
"Christians" in our day.
Ironically, this work of Augustine is probably more needed in our day than it
was in his -- over a millennium and a half later. A section of the subtitle
provides an interesting overview of this treatise: "Wherein the truth
of predestination and grace is defended against the Semi-Pelagians, -- those people,
to wit, who by no means withdraw altogether from the Pelagian heresy, in that
they contend that the beginning of salvation and of faith is of ourselves; so
that in virtue, as it were, of this precedent merit (in man--RB), the other
good gifts of God are attained."
The editor notes, "Augustine shows that not
only the increase, but the very beginning also of faith, is God's gift. On this
matter he does not disavow that he once thought differently, and that in some
small works, written before his Episcopate, he was in error, as in that
exposition, which they object to him, of propositions from the epistle to the
Romans. But he points out that he was subsequently convinced chiefly by this
testimony, 'But what hast thou that thou hast not received?' Which he proves is
to be taken as a testimony concerning faith itself..."

Another of Augustine's anti-Pelagian works. Includes an extract from his
"Retractions" on "De Correptione et Gratia." Here Augustine
sets forth "what is the Catholic faith concerning law, concerning free will,
and concerning grace." He also shows the necessity of "medicinal

AUGUSTINE,
AURELIUS
The
Works of Aurelius Augustine, Bishop of Hippo. Volume IX On Christian Doctrine;
The Enchiridion; On Catechising; And On Faith and the Creed. A New Translation.
Edited by the Rev. Marcus Dods, D.D. 1873.
Augustine was
perhaps the greatest of the early church fathers. According to Henry Paolucci, "It
has been said that St. Augustine is, from the standpoint of doctrine and depth
of spiritual experience, the great ecumenical saint of Christianity." Luther and Calvin both relied on Augustine for doctrinal
support.
This volume
contains four of Augustine's pieces:
On Christian
Doctrine.
Book 1: "The author divides his work into
two parts, one relating to the discovery, the other to the expression, of the
true sense of Scripture" (p. 7).
Book 2: "Having completed his exposition
of things, the author now proceeds to discuss the subject of signs" (p.
34).
Book 3: "The author, having discussed in
the preceding book the method of dealing with unknown signs, goes on in this
third book to treat of ambiguous signs" (p. 80).
Book 4: "Passing to the second part of his
work, that which treats of expression, the author premises that it is no part
of his intention to write a treatise on the laws of rhetoric" (p. 120).
The
Enchiridion of Augustine, Addressed to Laurentius; Being a Treatise on Faith,
Hope, and Love.
"Laurentius having asked
Augustine to furnish him with a handbook of Christian doctrine, containing in
brief compass answers to several questions which he had proposed, Augustine
shows him that these questions can be fully answered by any one who knows the
proper objects of faith, hope, and love" (p. 175).
Treatise on
the Catechising of the Uninstructed.
"At the request of a deacon
of Carthage, Augustine undertakes the task of teaching the art of catechising"
(p. 263).
Treatise On
Faith and the Creed.
This item "constitutes an
exposition of the several clauses of the so-called Apostles' Creed" (p.
339).
Includes a subject index and a
Scripture index. 379 pages.
