Full SWRB CD comment from Dr. McMahon:

"I have been systematically working through reading the Puritan and Reformed CDs I purchased.

I must say, there is nothing like them available anywhere.

It is the most amazing collection of works I know of in one package to date.

In my opinion, it far surpasses Ages Software and their collections.*

The Puritan and Reformed material presented on these CDs is exceptional.

I am continually amazed at the depth and breadth of information in both collections, and the rarity of works that I now have at my fingertips.

You have done an immeasurable service for the Kingdom of Christ in making these CDs available, and every pastor and theologian should own them without question (they would be foolhardy to pass them by)."

* It is SWRB's opinion that Ages has done an excellent job in making various Reformed works available on CD, so much so that we also distribute a number of their CDs at discounts. Thus, please don't make more out of our publishing this comment than is warranted, as this is a comment we received from one of our customers and it expresses his opinion. As for Ages' work, we rejoice whenever the truth is published, whether through others or through SWRB (as we play only a very small part in the revival of classic Reformation, Puritan and Covenanter thought that is now taking place worldwide through God's marvelous grace). The publication of the best Reformers and Puritans of the past is one of the greatest needs of our time, as this extends the blessings that come through faithful preachers and authors into our day and into the future. Lord willing, the growth in the publishing of faithful works from the past will help stem the tide of the great declension and unfaithfulness which we are now witnessing all around us, even (sadly) among many churches that still call themselves "Presbyterian" and/or "Reformed." So please pray together with us that our Lord will multiple the number of faithful publishers and publications, and that He will give many the heart to stand for the truth no matter the consequences (as He has done for our faithful forefathers, who resisted Satan and sin unto blood and even to martyrdom in many cases). -- RB.

"SWRB's Puritan and Reformation CD libraries are an invaluable source for the study of the history and theology of classic Reformation theology. The collection is remarkable not only for depth of content, but also for the rarity of many of the works. Most seminary libraries will not have even a percentage of the works available on these CD-ROMs. I cannot imagine anyone working in Reformation / historical theology that would not want to use the Puritan and Reformed libraries!"

- Phillip J. Long
Associate Prof. of New Testament

"I just received your CD collection. One bit of advice: you should instruct your customers to take about 1 week off just to peruse the tables of contents for these CD's, followed by another week off, in order to recover from the state of shock in which they will find themselves.

In all seriousness, this collection is almost impossible to describe. It has to be seen to be believed. As a pastor, my library has just increased dramatically. As a Ph.D. student in Puritan and Post-Reformation studies, I have immediate access to many of the same works for which I would normally need to access through rare book rooms of theological libraries.

Thank you for this labor of love. Thank you for making it accessible, both financially and technologically. May the Lord richly bless you for this service to his people."

- Yours for the faith,
Pastor David Owen Filson

"You all are doing a wonderful service by making all these materials so readily available. Having them on my hard drive is BETTER than having access to a rare book library with all of them in hand... I have found the CD set invaluable as a tool of scholarship. So once again I commend you brothers for making it available."

Examining Contemporary Revivalism, as well as other books, scholarly papers, and contributions to various anthologies).

"It's been several weeks now since I received the CDs and have had some time to digest some of them. All I can say is, "WOW!" This is truly a library like no other, and has already paid great dividends not only in my own personal worship and study, but in my teaching as well. I first balked at the price, but after seeing the vastness of the material, I almost feel as though I'm robbing you!

I pray that the Lord will allow you to get these materials into the hands of as many ministers as possible."

Full SWRB CD comment from Dr. Moore:

This collection of 62 CDs is a truly astounding accomplishment. There is nothing like this available to the ordinary Christian on the whole face of the earth.

Now, for the first time ever, ordinary Christians can have direct and near effortless access to the very cream of Puritan and Reformed, as well as Covenanter, literature.

These books are often in fascinating first editions and many are electronically linked and indexed for the first time. The ordinary Christian may here dig into a simply staggering wealth of literature, from devotional and sermonic material to technical and scholarly works. Even in the days of the Long Reformation itself ordinary Christians didn't get to see this kind of library -- most couldn't read for a start, and even those who could, would never have been able to afford to buy even a hundredth part of the material on these CDs. Truly we are without excuse!

And the significance of this collection goes even beyond that. No longer do we have to wait for modern Reformed publishing houses to predict that a particular Reformation or Puritan book will be sufficiently popular to make it economical to reprint, or to deem it "safe" enough to be let loose on the modern evangelical church. Rather, we are now able to see for ourselves the whole range of the Puritan and Reformed publishing enterprise, including views that are usually suppressed by most modern devotees of "Puritan" piety!

Buy these CDs while you can, and find out for yourself what the First and Second Reformations were really all about! You'll be truly amazed, and, by God's grace, will grow from being an ordinary Christian to being an extraordinary one. What they used to say of the Puritan John Flavel's preaching, can be said of these CDs: they are "hissing hot"!

- Dr Jonathan D. Moore, Cambridge, UK.
(Scholar of 16th and 17th century Calvinistic literature.)

"This side of eternity I'll never be able to repay the favor you have done mankind by bringing these... CDs together.

The first week of reading I grew more as a Christian reading those rich, pure Gospel Commentators than I have in 18 years of Christian life. After reading some of the Puritan CDs I have to get the Reformation set if it kills me. A fire is burning within me. These... CDs are liable to start a revival fire unseen in any generation... the Gospel in its pure form is seen in these... CDs.

Sir, I cant say enough. What a treasure! I'll never be able to repay you this side of heaven, but when we get there I am sure you will see the rich fruits of your labor. God bless you for not being money hungry but wanting to see Christians grow in the Lord... I love you even though we have never met, you have helped me in my Christian walk tremendously with these... CDs.

I am not bragging on the flesh, I am just giving honor where honor is due. The Holy Ghost will take these CDs and light a fire unseen and unheard of. God bless you all at Still Waters."

- Email from the USA

"Thank you so very much for the CDs.

I am amazed at the quality and quantity of the literature...

I cannot imagine any other single thing being done by any man or group of men in the earth today that is of such extensive, present, and enduring value as this CD work is.

God be praised that he uses sickly and weak men to forward his kingdom, that the work may not be mistaken to be wrought by the might of men, but by his Spirit. His strength is perfected in weakness."

Biographical Sketch of R.L. Dabney
B.B. Warfield called Dabney, "the most conspicuous figure and the leading theological guide of the Southern Presbyterian Church, the most prolific theological writer that Church has as yet produced, and for a period of over forty years one of the most distinguished and probably the most impressive teacher of its candidates for the ministry." An old school Presbyterian, Dabney served as chief of staff to General "Stonewall" Jackson. Heavily influenced by Francis Turretin and John Dick, he was born in 1820 and died in 1898.

DABNEY, R.L.

Dabney's Review of Girardeau's Instrumental Music in Public Worship (1889)
In this review Dabney writes, "Dr. Girardeau has defended the old usage of our church with a moral courage, loyalty to truth, clearness of reasoning and wealth of learning which should make every true Presbyterian proud of him, whether he adopts his conclusions or not. The framework of his argument is this: it begins with that vital truth which no Presbyterian can discard without a square desertion of our principles. The man who contests this first premise had better set out at once for Rome: God is to be worshipped only in the ways appointed in His Word. Every act of public cultus not positively enjoined by Him is thereby forbidden. Christ and His apostles ordained the musical worship of the New Dispensation without any sort of musical instrument, enjoining only the singing of psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Hence such instruments are excluded from Christian worship. Such has been the creed of all churches, and in all ages, except for the Popish communion after it had reached the nadir of its corruption at the end of the thirteenth century, and of its prelatic imitators." Excerpted from The Presbyterian Quarterly
(July, 1889, no. 9).

DABNEY, ROBERT LEWIS

Discussions of Robert Lewis Dabney (3 volumes, 1891)

Warfield called Dabney "the most conspicuous figure and the leading theological guide of the Southern Presbyterian Church, the most prolific theological writer that Church has as yet produced." These three volumes of articles and essays vindicate Warfield's statement. "This is not a book to be read and returned to the library shelf," states the well known Baptist minister Al Martin, "rather, as I have found to my own profit, it ought to be read, digested, and kept close at hand as a guide, companion and constant prod to us." Dr. Archibald Alexander called Dabney, "the best teacher of theology in the United States, if not the world." Freundt notes, "Dabney championed the doctrines of Calvinism and applied them consistently and practically to the great issues of his times." Indexed, 1901 pages.

DABNEY, ROBERT LEWIS

Lectures in Systematic Theology
For the preparation of this volume, Dabney, who A.A. Hodge called "the best teacher of theology in the United States," was well suited. "While this exposition and vindication of creedal Christianity is akin to that of other reformed authors he has a literary force and an ability to stimulate thought which is distinctive. In his concern to see the truth understood and lived, in his wrestling with hard points and his mastery of detail, Dabney is second to none... Comparing Dabney's work to that of Charles Hodge, Dr. Morton H. Smith has written: 'Hodge gives an excellent, general statement of the Reformed Faith, yet Dabney adds something beyond the general treatment of most subjects. When his method of teaching is recalled, of sending his students to the standard texts on theology (including Hodge), and then adding his own observation on each doctrine in the class from which his Theology was derived, it is to be expected that this work would have a certain freshness to it, and this is just what is found'" (dust jacket).

DABNEY, ROBERT L.

The Moral Effects of a Free Justification
The Publisher's Preface to Dabney's Discussions notes that "[m]uch of Dabney's most valuable and influential literary work first appeared in the form of separate articles, reviews and sermons printed in various journals." This article certainly fits the above bill, first appearing in The Southern Review of April, 1873; being, in part, a review of the Journal and Works of the Rev. John Wesley. Luther once said that "if the article of justification is lost, all Christian doctrine is lost at the same time." Thus, one can hardly think of a subject of greater practical importance. Errors regarding justification have led whole nations into the darkness and superstition of Popery, and untold millions of souls into eternal perdition. Dabney here deals with the false charge of antinomianism sometimes brought against this doctrine by Romanists and legalists, in their hope of destroying the foundation of true Christianity. He cites some practical errors by Luther, concerning Luther's views on sanctification and the law of God, and concludes by proving "that this doctrine is the best, yea, the only adequate enforcement of true holiness."

DABNEY, ROBERT L.

On Dangerous Reading
Dabney says "that under the name of dangerous books," he "means now to attack particularly the usual kinds of fictitious narratives, novels, impure sentimental poetry, and biographies, whether accurate or not, of criminal and degraded characters." He also notes that "[n]ovel reading is the murder of time," and on that basis alone should be rejected in favor of wholesome and edifying literature. Many of the principles set forth in this book can easily be applied to other forms of recreation and amusement -- television, movies, music and radio being the most obvious.

DABNEY, ROBERT LEWIS

Parental Responsibilities (1879)
Another important Dabney masterpiece not to be overlooked. Lasting revival and reformation comes only when Christian parents take their duty as stewards of God's covenant children seriously. Great encouragement here for parents who seek to please the LORD. In his day, Archibald Alexander called Dabney "the best teacher of theology in the United States, if not in the world." T.C. Johnson, who issued The Life and Letters of Robert Lewis Dabney in 1903, went further and regarded him as entitled "to the first place among the theological thinkers and writers of his century." (Publisher's Preface, Discussions of R.L. Dabney, Vol. 1).

DABNEY, ROBERT LEWIS

The Public Preaching of Women
Though written in 1879, this piece still remains one of the best shorter treatments of a matter which is once again receiving much attention in our day. "This common movement for 'women's rights,' and women's preaching, must be regarded, then, as simply infidel. It cannot be candidly upheld without attacking the inspiration and authority of the Scriptures," proclaims Dabney in prophetic style. Also includes B.B. Warfield's article "Paul on Women Speaking in Church." In the Publisher's preface to Dabney's Discussions it is noted that even in Dabney's day much corporate backsliding was already taking place. And that "with a growing impatience manifested towards the doctrinal exactness of a formulary of Faith like The Westminster Confession, it was inevitable that Dabney and his associates should be regarded as backward-looking and ultra-conservative. His biographer's tribute, that 'he became a type, not of New England Puritanism, but of Puritanism of the noblest English age,' had no force for a new generation with a dwindling interest in any form of Reformed orthodoxy." A sad example of this continued declension is seen in our day among bodies like the Christian Reformed Church, who seem eager to lap up the latest egalitarian crumbs that fall from Satan's table. This book is a Biblically faithful rebuke against all those who would pervert the God-given order between men, women and their respective callings.

DABNEY, ROBERT LEWIS

Prelacy: A Blunder - Grounded on Erroneous Exposition
Contrasting views of salvation, church government and the sacraments, Dabney shows why the Gospel and prelacy are mutually exclusive. Moreover, he proves that prelacy logically leads to Popery. A good little book for modern Reconstructionists to read, as some have fallen into this very error.

DABNEY, ROBERT L.

The Sabbath and the State
Dabney's view as to what part the state should play in Sabbath observance. Contains much that is thought-provoking but also demonstrates how even the best men, generally speaking, among American Presbyterian authors, have been lead into areas of error because of their practical denial of the Kingship of Christ -- in their denial of the establishment principle. For the historically Reformed view of civil government, as set forth in all the Reformed confessions, see either Christ's Kingship Over the Nations
by Brown or A Presbyterian Political Manifesto by Michael Wagner.

Secularized Education
Contains much that is thought-provoking, including some excellent points that can be used to defend faithful parents from unrighteous civil encroachment (in Christian home or private schools). However, as with the above title, this work falls far short of the whole truth because of its antiestablishmentarian stance. That the state honour and glorify God by keeping all of His commandments is a first principle, which if denied in any manner, leads to much error and eternal suffering. See Samuel B. Wylie's Two Sons of Oil: or, The Faithful Witness For Magistracy and Ministry Upon a Scriptural Basis (softcover, $6.95) or Willson's Civil Government

DABNEY, ROBERT L.

The System of Alexander Campbell
A examination and refutation of the Campbellites, especially as they ignorantly refuse to bind themselves by creeds and confessions (which is a self-refuting proposition, for everyone has a creed, whether written or unwritten). Deals with Campbell's "dispensationalism," common among other forms of Anabaptist thought (i.e. as in an espousal of radical discontinuity between the Old and New Testaments). Campbell's defective view of the Trinity and his heretical teaching concerning salvation are also countered.

Confusion reigns as subjectivity has lead many a young convert to pursue the ministry -- with little or no thought as to the objective standards of Scripture. DALE, JAMES W.

BAPTIZO (in the 4 volumes listed below)

Jerry Smith says that these volumes are "calculated to utterly shatter the widespread unfounded contemporary mythology surrounding the meaning and usage of the original Greek words underlying our English word baptism. Dale's original five volumes (bound in four) constitute the most massive, thorough, accurate, and authoritative study ever made of this word, examining all the known occurrences of baptizo. Absolutely a must reading on this controversial subject! Dale writes in a clear and refreshingly irenic spirit... which will delight and inform scholar, student, and layman alike." Dale spent twenty years writing this study concerning the meaning and mode of baptism. He interacts with all the relevant literature on the subject up to his time, the first volume appearing in 1867 and the last in 1874. J.H. Thayer in his entry in his Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament (Zondervan, 1962), says of this study: "If I were to utter my first impression, I should break out in unfeigned admiration." Moreover, Thayer noted, concerning Classic Baptism, that "the theory that Baptizo expresses a definite act, 'mode and nothing but mode,' is shown to be pitiably helpless when applied to 'all the Greek literature.'" Dale definitely has had the last word on this subject thus far in history. You can save yourself a lot of time and trouble regarding Baptism and its meaning by picking up these unrivalled volumes. The last three volumes listed below are softcovers and the final (i.e. volume four) volume is actually two volumes bound into one.

DARLING, JAMES

Cyclopaedia Bibliographica: A Library Manual of Theological and General Literature, and Guide to Books for Authors, Preachers, Students and Literary Men. Analytical, Bibliographical, and Biographical (1854, 10 Volumes)

An indispensable set for authors, researchers, serious students of Scripture, librarians, ministers, collectors, rare book dealers, etc. Contains much information that is either unavailable elsewhere or would have to be gleaned from several scattered volumes. Its ten volumes total 5245 pages. A phenomenal, theological, bibliographical resource of staggering comprehensiveness. The first section of this extremely rare set is a huge bibliography, organized by authors alphabetically. Most known Biblical and theological publications, to the author's day, are listed. Includes not only English listings, but Latin, French and German also. The second part is a topical bibliography categorizing items under the headings of Universal Knowledge, Theology (including the major commentaries, sermons, articles and studies for just about every verse in the Bible), a listing of Scripture texts (Hebrew, Greek and Latin) and an extensive index. The Morning Post calls this massive work "the most copious, accurate, and well-arranged catalogue of works in theological and general literature which has as yet been published." Brownson's Review noted that "for practical utility we know of none that surpasses or approaches it." Finally Bell's Messenger states, "No clergyman or antiquarian should think it needless to possess a copy of this work. It will smooth many a day's hard toil, by diminishing the labour of research, pointing as it does, in an instant to works which it might have taken weeks, if not months, or years, to search after." Don't miss this darling of a help, which will ease and aid all your theological studies!

DAVIES, SAMUEL

The Compassion of Christ to Weak Believers
If you ever struggle with the Christian life, or you feel weak or depressed, then this sermon is for you. Based on Matthew 12:20, "A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory." After reading this book you may think that the statement "God is love" is one of the most tortured and misconstrued statements in all of history. Things Unseen to Be Preferred to Things Seen
A proper estimate of the value of the things unseen, as compared to those seen, would do much to cure worldliness in the church and (humanly speaking) help to turn many unrepentant sinners to the things of Christ. DEDIJER, VLADIMIR

The Yugoslav Auschwitz and the Vatican

First-hand testimony of survivors and eyewitnesses is compiled in this shocking and graphic account of the crimes committed during World War II at the largest death camp in Yugoslavia. At the small Croation town of Jasenovac, the fascist "Independent State of Croatia" (a satellite state of the Nazi Third Reich) constructed a concentration camp where more than 200,000 people, mostly Orthodox Serbs, were systematically murdered. Among the participants in this genocide were members of the Roman Catholic clergy, from the Franciscan monk who became the camp commandant to the infamous Archbishop Stepinac, the spiritual advisor to the fascist state appointed by Pope Pius XII. Vladimir Dedijer... has collected irrefutable documentary and photographic evidence, attesting to thousands of atrocities and the complicity of the Catholic Church in these crimes. The events described in this important volume provide a historical context to the current conflict in Yugoslavia... The massacre at Jasenovac was... a dark episode in the history of the Catholic Church, one that the Church has attempted to hush up for fifty years (back cover, emphases added).

I present the new edition to the public in the hope that this most unknown chapter of Church history may become just as well-known as the crimes the (Roman Catholic--RB) Church committed in the Middle Ages (Gottfried Niemitz from the "Foreword to the Second German Edition, p. 21, emphases added).

This book is published by Prometheus Books (an atheist/anti-Christian publisher) and though it contains much that is useful (concerning the historical data presented), the reader is cautioned to be on guard as to other comments and conclusions it contains.

DEFOE, DANIEL

Religious Courtship: Being Historical Discourses, On the Necessity of Marrying Religious Husbands and Wives Only (1743)

Early in his life Defoe was studying to become a (dissenting) minister. Later he also wrote the famous novel, Robinson Crusoe. This title, written as a dialogue (of over 400 pages), demonstrates why husbands and wives should be of the same religion with one another; and how to bring such ends about. It also contains an appendix concerning the necessity of taking none but religious servants, and a proposal for the better managing of servants. DICK, JAMES

Hymns and Hymn Books (1883)

Greg Price calls this one of the best short defences of exclusive Psalmody. It is excerpted from The Original Covenanter magazine (Dec, 1883, vol. 3, No. 12). Here is a taste of Dick's writing,

Hymns of human composition are used so commonly now in public worship by Presbyterian churches that it is difficult to believe that the practice is not a hundred years old, and that in some of the churches it is of very recent date. On the supposition that it is good and dutiful and wise to sing such hymns in worship, it is equally difficult to account for the neglect of the churches at the time of the Reformation, and for generations afterwards. What could have so blinded the reformers as to make them reject hymns and sing the Psalms alone? How could the Westminster Divines, in framing their Confession of Faith and Directory for Worship, have been so unanimous in the blunder that the service of praise is to consist of the 'singing of Psalms?' And apart from the aspect of duty, how could the Presbyterian churches, for about a hundred and fifty or two hundred years after the Westminster Assembly, have been so insensible to the power of hymns as an attractive addition to their public services? We cannot by any means understand how it was that, if it was dutiful to use hymns in worship, the reformers did not discover the Scriptural warrant for the duty, especially as hymns had been used for centuries by the Church of Rome. Nor can we understand how they rejected the hymns and used the Psalms alone, unless on the supposition that they believed the use of hymns to be part of the will-worship of Rome. If they were wrong on this point, then Rome and our modern Presbyterian churches are right. In that case, the Puritans and Covenanters were fanatics, and Romanists were truly enlightened! And most of our Presbyterian churches of the present day were fanatical too, and did not become truly enlightened and liberal till they got back to the Romish practice!

ON DAVID DICKSON…

Author David Dickson (1583-1663) was the son of a wealthy merchant in Glasgow. His early aspirations to enter the family business were diverted through an illness and a subsequently lengthy period of convalescence. The result was that he entered the University of Glasgow (then under Principal Robert Boyd) and prepared for the Christian ministry. Following graduation he remained in the University as a regent until, in 1618, he was called to the parish of Irvine in Ayrshire. Deprived of his ministry in 1622 by the Bishop of Glasgow for his opposition to the Five Articles, he was banished for a year to Turiff in Aberdeenshire, but on his return was the instrument in the hand of God of numerous conversions. It was out of his pastoral experience that his famous manual of spiritual counsel, Therapeutica Sacra, was written. In 1638 he was present at the famous Assembly which restored Presbyterian government in Scotland, and the following year was chosen Moderator of the Scottish Church.

In 1640 he became Professor of Divinity in Glasgow, transferring to Edinburgh ten years later. During that period he played a considerable part in establishing vital, orthodox Christianity throughout the land. He helped to draw up the Directory for Public Worship, and with James Durham compiled the Sum of Saving Knowledge (a work instrumental in later years in the conversion of Robert Murray M'Cheyne). Restoration troubles after the return of King Charles II in 1660, hastened his death. As the end drew near, he spoke the memorable words: 'I have taken all my good deeds, and all my bad and cast them in a heap before the Lord, and fled from both, and betaken myself to the Lord Jesus Christ, and in him I have sweet peace.'

DICKSON, DAVID

A Brief Explication of the Psalms (1655, 1834 edition, 2 volumes)
Charles Spurgeon calls this "(a) rich volume, dropping fatness. Invaluable to the preacher. Having read and re-read it, we can speak of its holy savor and suggestiveness. We commend it with much fervor" (Commenting on Commentaries
). Spurgeon also commented, "Dickson is a writer after our own heart, for preachers he is a great ally" (Johnston, The Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 314). Dickson worked on the Directory for Public Worship with Calderwood and Henderson and on The Sum of Saving Knowledge with Durham. The Treasury of the Scottish Covenant further notes, "An English merchant had occasion to visit Scotland about 1650. On his return he was asked what news he brought, when he replied: 'Great and good news! I went to St. Andrews, where I heard a sweet majestic looking man--Blair was his name--who shewed me the majesty of God. After him I heard a little fair man, named Rutherford, and he shewed me the loveliness of Christ. I then went to Irvine, where I heard a well-favoured, proper old man, with a long beard--his name was David Dickson--and that man shewed me all my heart.'" Seeing "all your heart" in the Psalms, through these works of Dickson's, makes these volumes a most valuable addition to any Christian's library. Wodrow's "Life of Dickson" is also included in this volume. 1051 pages.

DICKSON, DAVID

Truth's Victory Over Error (A Classic Commentary on the Westminster Confession of Faith) (1684, 1784 edition)

The title continues,

"The True Principles of the Christian Religion, Stated and Vindicated against the following Heresies, viz, Arians, Arminians, Anabaptists, Antinomians, Brownists, Donatists, Epicurians, Eutychians, Erastians, Familists, Jesuits, Independents, Libertines, Manicheans, Pelagians, Papists, Quakers, Socinians, Sabellians, Sceptics, Vaninians, etc. The whole being a Commentary on all the Chapters of the (Westminster -- RB) Confession of Faith, by way of Question and Answer: In which, the saving Truths of our holy Religion are confirmed and established; and the dangerous Errors and Opinions of its Adversaries detected and confuted... To this Edition is prefixed, A short Account of the Author's Life, by the late Mr. Robert Wodrow..."

One of the best commentaries on the Westminster Confession of Faith.

This item is part of the elder's reading/training list in the Puritan Reformed Church (the church of the Covenanted Reformation).

296 pages.

Banner of Truth Description

This book is not merely of historical interest; it is also of considerable value now because many of the errors refuted within its pages have surfaced again in the 21st century church under new guises. Christians today can learn a great deal from the faithful witness of former generations who experienced 'truth's victory over error'.

Truth's Victory Over Error contains David Dickson's lectures on the Westminster Confession of Faith, delivered to the divinity students of Edinburgh University in the early 1650s. Here then is a commentary written just a few brief years after the Westminster Divines drew up their famous Confession of 1647 by one of their senior contemporaries. Dickson's comments reveal the burning issues of the day and supply fascinating insight into the robust theology of the Scottish Puritans.

In the Introduction to the book Robert Wodrow writes that the author 'as it were, breaks the truths of our Confession small, and prepares them for the meanest capacities.' Here, then, is a useful aid for Christians who want to study and understand the doctrines of the Confession itself.

Dickson was concerned to explain the truth and refute error. Not content merely to establish the Confession's articles from Scripture, he also 'guards against the gangrene and poison of contrary errors, with judgment and perspicuity' (Wodrow). Like all true evangelicals, Dickson saw the vital need of expressing the Bible's teaching in both negative and positive propositions.

DICKSON, JOHN

Christ's Comfort Under Distress

This may be one of the most encouraging sermons you will ever hear! It was preached in January of 1675 and is read by elder Lyndon Dohms from the book A Collection of Very Valuable Sermons: Preached on several Subjects and in divers Places in the time of the Late Persecution. By these Eminent Servants of Jesus Christ, Messrs John Kid, John King, John Welch, John Blackadder, John Dickson, and Gabriel Semple. Collected and Transcribed from different Manuscripts, by John Howie; and Published at the request of those who desire to Own the same Testimony, that some of these Authors Owned and Sealed with their Blood (edited by John Howie [1780], $4.97 P; $9.00 HP). It contains incredible Scriptural insights and is a great example of the classic Covenanter preaching that took place during times of intense persecution, when faithful ministers were often hunted and martyred for their stand for Christ's Crown and Covenant.

DIODATI, JOHN

Pious and Learned Annotations Upon the Holy Bible Plainly Expounding the Most Difficult Places Thereof By that Godly and Famous Divine, Mr. John Diodati, Late Minister of the Gospel in Geneva (third edition [in three volumes], 1651)

The title continues: "Corrected and much augmented, with additional notes of the same author, throughout the whole work. And the analysis upon each several book of the Old and New Testament, setting down the chief heads contained therein, being very much enlarged, is now fully completed in this third edition." "These Annotations were first written in Italian, by a reverend Protestant Divine of the Church of Geneva, the most reformed in all France, and famous for the great lights of it, John Calvin, Theodore Beza, and this renowned John Diodati, their successor both in place and eminent erudition.... In fine, here are choice Meditations, and sound expositions, more to be valued then refined gold... and the choicest subject the world ever afforded, being Jesus Christ and him crucified, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life" (Translator from "To the Reader"). Concerning Diodati, Darling (Cyclopaedia Bibliographica, p. 918) writes, "Born at Geneva 1576; died 1640. This celebrated Italian Protestant divine, belonging to a noble family from Lucca in Italy, is known chiefly by his biblical works, and by his translation of Father Paul's History of the Council of Trent into French. He was sent in 1618 by the Church of Geneva to the Synod of Dort. His translation of the Bible into Italian is still considered one of the best." Regarding these Annotations in particular Darling further notes, "Short, but comprehensive practical annotations; many of them were introduced into the (Westminster--RB) Assembly's Annotations. The above (i.e. the third edition--RB) is the best edition." Richard Baxter, in compiling a list of the most essential books for Christian edification, after listing the Bible and a Concordance, counseled Christians to obtain "a sound Commentary or Annotations, either Diodati's, the English (or Westminster--RB) Annotations, or the Dutch (A Christian Directory, p. 732). 1104 pages.

DEMAUS, ROBERT (Edited by Richard Lovett)

William Tyndale: A Biography (1904)

William Tyndale was the first man ever to attempt translating the Bible into English from the original languages (Wycliffe had translated from the Latin Vulgate). His work in this field was vital to the production of English-language Bibles at the time of the Reformation. Because of his ground breaking effort to produce a Bible in English, the editor of this biography of Tyndale notes that "there are not lacking those who consider him [Tyndale] to be the one man to whom modern Englishmen owe the largest debt of gratitude (p. 5)." Thus anyone interested in the Reformation in English-speaking countries would necessarily need to know about Tyndale and his work. Furthermore, Robert Demaus' biography of this great Reformer was done so well that "it was but natural that the book should at once become the standard authority on the subject, which it is now admitted on all hands to be (p. 5)."

The England that Tyndale was born into was spiritually dark due to the religious dominance of the Romish Antichrist. At that time the Bible "was practically unknown, either to clergy or to people. The Convocation of the province of Canterbury had expressly forbidden any man to translate any part of Scripture into the English tongue, or to read such translation without the authority of the bishop, an authority not very likely to be granted (p. 32)." But this was to be expected. "If the Pope was in very deed the antichrist foretold by the apostles, then it was not surprising that he should use every effort to keep the people in ignorance of that Divine rule which would so completely expose the baselessness of his pretensions; it was only natural that the Holy Scriptures should be buried in unknown tongues, and that the meaning of the passages which occurred in the services of the Church should be obscured by whimsical, allegorical interpretations (pp. 82-83)." Thus Tyndale decided to undertake "the translation of the New Testament into the English tongue, as the noblest service that he could render to his country, and an indispensable preliminary to any possible reformation of the abuses which abounded in the Church (p. 83)."

This book, then, recounts Tyndale's heroic efforts to produce an English-language Bible. When he began this great project, the Reformation had begun on the continent of Europe, but had not yet had much impact in England. Thus opposition to his work in England would be too powerful. "It was clearly impossible to translate the New Testament in England; but there was no difficulty in translating it abroad, in some of those countries where the Reformation had established itself (p. 111)." In 1524 he left England for Germany, and never returned to his native country again.

Tyndale was able to translate the New Testament in Germany, and it appears that the first copies arrived in England in 1526 (p. 141). Chapter Five discusses Tyndale's New Testament, and describes his scholarly qualifications. Tyndale had done such a good job of translation that Demaus (writing in the nineteenth century) could say, "that the English New Testament, as we now have it, is, in its substance, the unchanged language of Tindale's first version (p. 157)." Once the authorities in England discovered that an English translation of the Bible was circulating in their country, they acted quickly to stop its spread, confiscating any copies found, and arresting the distributors. As a result, "for a time, doubtless, the circulation of the New Testament in England was sensibly arrested (p. 188)."

After his translating of the New Testament, Tyndale began translating the Old Testament. In 1531 the first English translation of the Pentateuch was printed. "This was Tyndale's second great contribution towards that sacred work to which he had devoted his life (p. 272)." Tyndale was also writing some books of his own including "The Practice of Prelates." In Tyndale's "eyes the pope was Antichrist and the whore of Babylon (p. 299)." Sir Thomas More, a very prominent English Romanist, was called upon to defend Rome, and thus a public controversy between More and Tyndale erupted. Tyndale's book "An Answer to Sir Thomas More's Dialogue" (also published by SWRB) was the result.

Continuing his work on Bible translation, in 1534 Tyndale reissued the Pentateuch with a few changes, and a revision of the New Testament. Tyndale completed another revision of the New Testament in 1535, but he was arrested before it could be printed. By this time Tyndale was in Antwerp (the Netherlands). It was there that he was arrested, and then moved to the Castle of Vilvorde, the state prison of the Low Countries (p. 483). Tyndale's trial for heresy began in 1536, and he was condemned to death. But the work he had undertaken in his life continued to bless God's people for generations to come, and thus his influence for good has been immeasurable.

This book is a standard work on one of the most important Reformers, who gave his life in service to Christ and the brethren. 561 pages.

DENNISON, JAMES, Jr.

The Market Day of the Soul

(The Puritans and the Sabbath)

This is a reprinting of Dennison's book on the Sabbath as understood by the Puritans. Dennison originally wrote this book as a thesis at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary for the late Dr. John H. Gerstner, and it was published in 1983. We have retypeset it from its original edition. In this book, painstakingly researched from original souces, Dennison shows the differing views on the Sabbath between the Anglicans of the 16th and 17th centuries and the Puritans of that same time period. He concludes that the Puritan view of the Sabbath is the biblical one. 210 pages (SDG flyer).

DEXTER, HENRY MARTIN

Roger Williams and His 'Banishment' from the Massachusetts Plantation; With a Few Further Words Concerning the Baptists, the Quakers, and Religious Liberty (1876)

Refutes the silly, historically inaccurate, anti-Biblical notion that Williams was some kind of champion of liberty. The fact of the matter is that Williams' wicked views were much closer to Anabaptist antinomian anarchy than to biblical liberty. Moreover, Williams paved the way, with his antichristian views, for much of the open opposition to the Lord Jesus Christ and His law that we see in society today. He even abandoned many of his own ideas, after seeing their unworkableness, when they were turned against him in his later life. Ultimately, as this book demonstrates, Williams was a confused upstart that promoted a number of devilish ideas. It also demolishes much of the historical revisionism surrounding Williams, his contemporaries and their times (from many [rare] source documents). 146 (8.5" x 11") pages with a chronological table of events surrounding Williams and his life.

DODDS, JAMES

The Fifty Years' Struggle of the Scottish Covenanters 1638-1688 (fifth edition, 1868)
"This volume does not pretend to be an exhaustive History of the Period selected, or properly a History at all. It is only a series of descriptive Sketches, meant to represent in outline the successive phases of the Covenanting Struggle. The subject is a noble one for a History, having an epic completeness--a beginning, middle, and end--with it clearly-defined half century... The main body of the Narrative has been based on a careful collation of the best authorites--those contemporary or nearly contemporary with the events... I have also had the privilege... of examining the documents of the period in the State Paper Office," notes the author. 400 pages, indexed.

DOHMS FAMILY

50 Suggested Tunes for Use With the Scottish Metrical Psalter of 1650 (1998)

Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works. Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD. Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually. Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth; O ye seed of Israel his servant, ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones. He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth. Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations; Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac; And hath confirmed the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant (1 Chr. 16:8-17, emphases added).

This tape was produced by Elder Lyndon Dohms and his family to help those using or making the transition to the Psalter of the Covenanted Reformation (i.e. the Scottish Metrical Psalter of 1650). This Psalter passed through the intense scrutiny of -- and was authorized for public use by -- both the Westminster Assembly and the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland (at the height of her purity) in the mid seventeenth century. Concerning the care and preparation that went into this unsurpassed Metrical Psalter, the January 15 (1993) issue of The Original Covenanter and Contenting Witness magazine cites an earlier article which notes,

Rouse bestowed upon it his greatest pains. This was not enough. For six Years it endured the scrutiny of, and was revised by, two of the most learned Assemblies that ever sat in the British Isles; at a time, too, when these men were zealous for truth and suspicious of error. Every word was weighed, and every expression made exact, before admitted into any statement of Biblical truth. They wrote not so that they might be understood, but so that they could not be misunderstood. This exactness and conscientiousness they carried with them in their translation of the Psalms. In versifying them, they labored not to clothe the mind of the Spirit in poetic finery, but to cause the muse to bow to the exact expression of the Holy Ghost.... For more than two centuries (almost three and a half centuries now--RB) they have stood the test, and every attempt to render them more elegant has resulted in a departure from the exact expression of the Spirit (as in the case of the present RPCNA Psalter, The Book of PSalms for Singing--RB). Let us hold fast to this good old version until another proves itself worthy of its place.

Moreover, this Psalter was produced to further national and international covenanted Reformation -- and to fulfill the intent of the Solemn League and Covenant for biblically regulated worship and biblical uniformity. It was crafted with faithfulness to the Word of God utmost in the mind of its translators and fashioned in the manner most fitting for ease of use among the general population -- making it a most conducive engine for discipling the nations. To accomplish this last goal, the Scottish Metrical Psalter provides a version of every Psalm in common metre (except Psalm 136 -- and even this Psalm, with a little ingenuity, can be made to fit the various common metre tunes). With all this in mind it is easy to recognize how (and why) this "tune tape" has been created to help the contemporary Covenanter and Psalm singer make good use of this godly and judicious offering -- a landmark Psalter -- which we have received from the hands of our faithful forefathers.

On this cassette the Dohms provide us with fifty separate tunes (sung acappella), most of which are common metre -- but samples of other tunes used in this Psalter also appear (and are noted by name on the tape before each tune is sung). All the common metre tunes can be interchanged and used with all of the Psalms in the Scottish Metrical Psalter of 1650 (sometimes listed as The Psalms of David in Metre in this catalogue). However, because this cassette is primarily intended to familiarize the listener with a diverse selection of tunes, only Psalms one and 23 are sung in their entirety. The remaining 48 Psalms (Psalms 2-22 and 24-50) make use of two to four verses from each Psalm. This allows the listener to sample a wider range of tunes on one cassette -- and keeps the price of this tape down (as one is not forced to buy numerous tapes to cover the fifty tunes offered here). This is also very useful when it is remembered, as noted above, that all the common metre tunes can be interchanged throughout this Psalter, as all the Psalms (excepting 136) in the Scottish Metrical Psalter are provided in a common metre version. For those who are interested, Psalms 6, 25, 45, 50, 67, 70, 100, 102, 124, 136, 143, 145, 148 are also translated for use with an alternate tune in the Scottish Metrical Psalter (and at least one tune for each of these alternate versions is provided on this tape).

As an added bonus, at the end of this tape, Psalm one is also "lined out" (as mandated in the Westminster Assembly's Directory for Public Worship), with a short explanation provided by elder Dohms for the use of this ancient practice. The "lining out" is included to assist those seeking to utilize the venerable practice of the church as it was upheld during Old Testament times, the days of Christ and the Apostles, and during both Reformations.

In short, this cassette is provided as a valuable tool for those who love to sing God's holy Word, as a useful aid for song leaders (and singers) in preparing for public, family and secret worship, and for the listening pleasure and edification of all those who love to hide God's Word in their heart!

DOUGLAS, JAMES

Strictures on Occasional Hearing (1820, second edition)

An inquiry into Song 1:7, "Why should I be as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions?" This book sets out to demonstrates the proposition that one should not hear the public preaching of those he can not take communion with (i.e. it proposes a ban on occasionally hearing those with whom you can not maintain organic fellowship with). The implications contained in this truth are immense; especially when one has adopted the Biblical doctrine of close communion and is set upon upholding the covenanted reformation. The duty to separation and to true visible unity are all encompassed here. A review of this book, written in 1818, notes that the "treatise may be viewed as a complete repository of all that has yet been said on the subject." It is filled with Scriptural, as well as historical testimony, and is a welcome tonic to the weak and compromising books of our day that so often sacrifice the truth on the altar of some other man made expediency (such as unity for political or ecclesiastical advantage). For as the introduction notes, "It is the revealed will of God, and not saintship, which is the only rule of a visible profession." That Christians exist in other denominations is not denied, but that they are faithful to the covenanted reformation (already historically obtained) is. The arguments set forth here are reminiscent of those found in Rutherford's Due Right of Presbyteries. If you are struggling with questions related to separation, the unity of the visible church, close communion, etc. this book may be exactly what you've been looking for. A massive appendix also lays out the historical testimony concerning this matter. 144 pages.

DOUGLAS, THOMAS (Translator)

Vitis Degeneris: or, The Degenerate Plant (1668)
The title continues: "Being a Treatise of Ancient Ceremonies. Containing an Historical Account of their Rise and Growth, their First Entrance into the Church, and their Gradual Advancement to Superstition Therein. Written originally in French, but now, for general information and benefit, faithfully translated into English." Contains a fascinating "summary of those ceremonies whose original is reported in this history, according to the respective order of time wherein they had their rise" -- covering the period from 110 AD to 1470 AD. The mystery of iniquity has made much progress in the church since the writing of this book; but the foundations of defection were laid during the period covered herein. If we would pull out the idolatrous tree by its roots (in our battle against the inner darkness in the visible church), books like this offer a great deal of help. It deals with the corruption of the Lord's Supper (in the Mass), Romish holy days (like Easter), and many appendages of ecclesiastical Antichrist -- some which are now taught and practiced in churches which call themselves "Reformed." "But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up" (Matt. 15:13). 222 pages.

DURHAM, JAMES

Christ Crucified: Or, The Marrow of the Gospel, Evidently Set Forth in 72 Sermons on the Whole Fifty-third Chapter of Isaiah

(1723, fourth edition, corrected)

The title continues: "Wherein the text is clearly and judicially opened, and a great many most apposite, truly spiritual, and very edifying points of doctrine, in a delectable variety, drawn from it; with choice and excellent practical improvements thereof. Wherein also several adversaries of the truth, as Socinians, Arminians, Arians, and Antinomians, are solidly and fully refuted. Besides, many errors in practice incident to professors, otherwise sound and orthodox in their opinions, are discovered; and many grave, deep, and very important cases of conscience, satisfyingly discussed." The preface, signed by Thomas Ridgley (and 22 others), notes that this work "equals, at least, if it does not exceed his other writings." This book aims to "prove contributive to the bringing you to a considerable growth in holiness." It contains an index (which was not available in earlier editions), enlarged print, and covers over 430 pages.

"Durham is always good, and he is at his best upon the Canticles. He gives us the essence of the good matter. For practical use this work is perhaps more valuable than any other key to the Song," writes Spurgeon (as cited in Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant
, p. 318). "The epistle dedicatory was written by Mrs. Durham, and addressed to the Lady Viscountess of Kenmure, Dr. (John--RB) Owen contributed the address to the Christian Reader, which bears the date 1669" (Ibid., p. 317). 460 pages.

DURHAM, JAMES

A Complete Commentary Upon the Book of Revelation (1658, 1799 edition)

In 1779, in their Testimony and Warning Against the Blasphemies and Idolatry of Popery, the Reformed Presbytery called Durham's Complete Commentary... On the Book of Revelation, "the best exposition of that book that has yet been published" (p. 61n)."After all that has been written it would not be easy to find a more sensible and instructive work than this old-fashioned exposition... the mystery of the Gospel fills it with sweet savour" writes Spurgeon of this work (cited in Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 318, emphasis added). Carstairs, in the introduction to this huge set, comments that the judicious reader "will count the author an interpreter, one among a thousand." This book touches on many subjects "with some practical observations, and several digressions, necessary for vindicating, clearing, and confirming many weighty and important truths." Furthermore, along with a detailed verse by verse interpretation of the book of Revelation it includes (at the end of volume two) a brief summary (containing 24 pages) of the whole book. The complete photocopy set is massive and covers 1750 pages!

DURHAM, JAMES

The Dying Man's Testament to the Church of Scotland: Or, A Treatise Concerning Scandal (1659, 1740 edition)
Though it wasn't until the very end of his life that Durham got off the fence and made his preference for the Protester's (over the Resolutioner's) cause known, this book still contains much valuable information if it is handled in the proper context (i.e. the battle for a faithful, settled national church; with no thought of approbating the schismatic independent denominationalism prevalent in our day). This book is divided into four parts: "1. Concerning Scandal in the general; 2. Concerning publick Scandals, or Scandals as they are the object of Church-Censures, and more particularly as they are in practice; 3. Concerning doctrinal Scandals, or scandalous Errors; 4. Concerning scandalous Divisions." There is some question as to the authorship of this book, or whether it has been doctored by later writers, but we will not enter into that in this short space. 432 pages.

DURHAM, JAMES

The Law Unsealed; or, a Practical Exposition of the Ten Commandments. With a Resolution of Several Momentous Questions and Cases of Conscience. (1675, 1802 edition)

Durham, a Scottish Covenanter, was known as a,

'very candid and searching preacher,' who in an instant was 'in the inmost corners of your bosom,' though with the utmost 'caution and meekness, without giving any of his hearers the smallest ground to fret and repine at his freedom in dealing with them'" (Carstairs cited in the Dictionary of Scottish Church History, p. 266).

John Owen, in his letter introducing the reader to this volume, writes,

In the whole a full testimony is given, not only against the profligate lives of many, called Christians, but that barren careless profession also, which too many satisfy themselves withal, who pretend more unto the truth and power of religion. And as those who are sincere in their obedience may, in the examination of themselves, by the rules here laid down, discern the decays which possibly they have fallen under in this hour of temptation, which is come on the face of the earth, to try them that dwell therein, so also may they be directed in their Christian course unto the glory of God, and the comfort of their own souls.

Larry Birger also writes,

John Owen gave high praise to this book in the introduction he wrote for it, and rightly so, in my humble opinion. This may indeed be the single best book you can obtain on the 10 commandments, and it is especially valuable for its relatively short size. The first chapter, which expounds the preface to the 10 commandments, is only 30 pages long and is simply fantastic.

Durham's lectures deal with each commandment in order and the volume contains "An Alphabetical Table of the Principal Matters Handled in the Whole Book;" making it eminently practical, and a very useful aid to the study of God's holy, just, good and spiritual law (Rom. 7:12). 422 pages.

DURHAM, JAMES

The Unsearchable Riches of Christ and of Grace and Glory In and Through Him; Diligently Searched Into, Clearly Unfolded, and Comfortably Holden Forth, in Fourteen Rich Gospel Sermons Preached on Several Texts, at Communions in Glasgow (1685, 1764 edition)

These communion sermons cover topics such as: the great danger of unworthy communing; the great sin of not discerning the Lord's body; gospel preparations are the strongest invitations; after God speaks peace, turn not again to folly; right covenanting with God, a business of the greatest concern; heart-melting is a good frame for covenanting with God; we should stir up ourselves to covenant with God; believers' sweetest communion is with Christ in heaven; etc. The tenor of this book could be summed up in this statement excerpted from the Epistle Dedicatory and Prefatory, "Beware of all sinful dalliances with idols, whereby the soul is estranged from communion with God; for there is no agreement betwixt the temple of God and idols, from love to fellowship with him, and from zeal to his glory, bid them all, with indignation, be gone, saying to them, What have we any more to do with idols? and as to a menstruous cloth, Get you hence" (bold emphasis added. pp. xi-xii). Durham was a well-known Presbyterian Covenanter (who openly sided with the Protesters as he neared his death) -- and Covenanter communion sermons often produced some of the richest gospel fare one is likely to encounter. Taste of this fine feast and you will see for yourself what we mean. Over 300 pages.

The Dutch Annotations upon the Whole Bible (1657)

Theodore Haak (1605-1690), at the instigation of the Westminster Assembly, translated the famous Dutch Bible and its Annotations into the English language, culminating in the 1657 folio edition(s).

Having a long reputation in the Netherlands, and there quoted with great authority, we are grateful to have this reprint edition available for a new generation of English readers.

This book is a massive folio volume -- almost 10 inches wide and just a little over 13 inches tall.

On the antiquarian market, the Haak-Bible, as it is called, has sold for over $US1,000.00 (or about $1500.00 US funds).

Smyth-sewn for added durability, this facsimile reprint of the 1657 printing will provide a new avenue for personal study, sermon preparation, and scholarly interest.
