I want you to know that I have enjoyed my Puritan Hard Drive immensely.
I simply could not have imagined such a resource before getting my hands on it!
To have that much information from a consistent, biblical, orthodox, and gospel-centered point of view is simply astonishing.
Anyone who admires the Puritans simply must have the Puritan Hard Drive.
From Pastors to Ph.D. candidates, there is simply nothing else out there that puts so much at your fingertips.
What an amazing tool for pastors... thank you for your work.
Soli Deo Gloria!

"I
have been systematically working through reading the Puritan and Reformed CDs I
purchased.
I must say, there is nothing like them

It is the most amazing collection of works I
know of in one package to date.
In
my opinion, it far surpasses Ages Software and their collections.*
The
Puritan and Reformed material presented on these CDs is exceptional.
I
am continually amazed at the depth and breadth of information in both
collections, and the rarity of works that I now have at my fingertips.
You
have done an immeasurable service for the Kingdom of Christ in making these CDs

* It is SWRB's
opinion that Ages has done an excellent job in making various Reformed works
available on CD, so much so that we also distribute a number of their CDs at
discounts. Thus, please don't make more out of our publishing this comment than
is warranted, as this is a comment we received from one of our customers and it
expresses his opinion. As for Ages' work, we rejoice whenever the truth is
published, whether through others or through SWRB (as we play only a very small
part in the revival of classic Reformation, Puritan and Covenanter thought that
is now taking place worldwide through God's marvelous grace). The publication
of the best Reformers and Puritans of the past is one of the greatest needs of
our time, as this extends the blessings that come through faithful preachers
and authors into our day and into the future. Lord willing, the growth in the
publishing of faithful works from the past will help stem the tide of the great
declension and unfaithfulness which we are now witnessing all around us, even
(sadly) among many churches that still call themselves "Presbyterian"
and/or "Reformed." So please pray together with us that our Lord will
multiple the number of faithful publishers and publications, and that He will
give many the heart to stand for the truth no matter the consequences (as He
has done for our faithful forefathers, who resisted Satan and sin unto blood
and even to martyrdom in many cases). -- RB.
"SWRB's
Puritan and Reformation CD libraries are an invaluable source for the study of
the history and theology of classic Reformation theology. The collection is
remarkable not only for depth of content, but also for the rarity of many of
the works. Most seminary libraries will not have even a percentage of the works
available on these CD-ROMs. I cannot imagine anyone working in Reformation /
historical theology that would not want to use the Puritan and Reformed
libraries!"

"I
just received your CD collection. One bit of advice: you should instruct your
customers to take about 1 week off just to peruse the tables of contents for
these CD's, followed by another week off, in order to recover from the
state of shock in which they will find themselves.
In
all seriousness, this collection is almost impossible to describe. It has to be
seen to be believed. As a pastor, my library has just increased
dramatically.
As a Ph.D. student in Puritan and Post-Reformation studies, I have immediate
access to many of the same works for which I would normally need to access
through rare book rooms of theological libraries.
Thank
you for this labor of love. Thank you for making it accessible, both
financially and technologically. May the Lord richly bless you for this service
to his people."

"You
all are doing a wonderful service by making all these materials so readily
available. Having them on my hard drive is BETTER than having access to a
rare book library with all of them in hand... I have found the CD set
invaluable as a tool of scholarship. So once again I commend you brothers for making
it available."

"It's
been several weeks now since I received the CDs and have had some time to
digest some of them. All I can say is, "WOW!" This is truly a
library like no other, and has already paid great dividends not only in my own
personal worship and study, but in my teaching as well. I first balked at the
price, but after seeing the vastness of the material, I almost feel as though
I'm robbing you!
I
pray that the Lord will allow you to get these materials into the hands of as
many ministers as possible."

Full
SWRB CD comment from Dr. Moore:
This
collection of 62 CDs is a truly astounding accomplishment. There is nothing
like this available to the ordinary Christian on the whole face of the earth.
Now,
for the first time ever, ordinary Christians can have direct and near
effortless access to the very cream of Puritan and Reformed, as well as
Covenanter, literature.
These
books are often in fascinating first editions and many are electronically
linked and indexed for the first time. The ordinary Christian may here dig
into a simply staggering wealth of literature, from devotional and sermonic
material to technical and scholarly works. Even in the days of the Long Reformation
itself ordinary Christians didn't get to see this kind of library -- most couldn't
read for a start, and even those who could, would never have been able to
afford to buy even a hundredth part of the material on these CDs. Truly we are
without excuse!
And
the significance of this collection goes even beyond that. No longer do we have
to wait for modern Reformed publishing houses to predict that a particular
Reformation or Puritan book will be sufficiently popular to make it economical
to reprint, or to deem it "safe" enough to be let loose on the modern
evangelical church. Rather, we are now able to see for ourselves the whole
range of the Puritan and Reformed publishing enterprise, including views that
are usually suppressed by most modern devotees of "Puritan" piety!
Buy
these CDs while you can, and find out for yourself what the First and Second
Reformations were really all about! You'll be truly amazed, and, by God's
grace, will grow from being an ordinary Christian to being an extraordinary
one. What they used to say of the Puritan John Flavel's preaching, can be
said of these CDs: they are "hissing hot"!

"This
side of eternity I'll never be able to repay the favor you have done mankind by
bringing these... CDs together.
The
first week of reading I grew more as a Christian reading those rich, pure
Gospel Commentators than I have in 18 years of Christian life. After reading some of
the Puritan CDs I have to get the Reformation set if it kills me. A fire is
burning within me. These... CDs are liable to start a revival fire unseen in
any generation... the Gospel in its pure form is seen in these... CDs.
Sir,
I cant say enough. What a treasure! I'll never be able to repay you this side
of heaven, but when we get there I am sure you will see the rich fruits of your
labor. God bless you for not being money hungry but wanting to see Christians
grow in the Lord... I love you even though we have never met, you have
helped me in my Christian walk tremendously with these... CDs.
I
am not bragging on the flesh, I am just giving honor where honor is due. The
Holy Ghost will take these CDs and light a fire unseen and unheard of. God
bless you all at Still Waters."

"Thank
you so very much for the CDs.
I am amazed at the quality and quantity of
the literature...
I
cannot imagine any other single thing being done by any man or group of men in
the earth today that is of such extensive, present, and enduring value as
this CD work is.
God
be praised that he uses sickly and weak men to forward his kingdom, that the
work may not be mistaken to be wrought by the might of men, but by his Spirit.
His strength is perfected in weakness."

The Genevan Bible, Notes on its Production and Distribution (1937, reprinted 1998)
"The Genevan Bible Notes contain the fascinating account of
the origins and revisions of the Geneva Bible originally published in 1560.
The Genevan Bible was the most popular Bible of the
English people from 1560 until the late 1600's. There were three
primary editions: (1) the editions that follow the first edition of 1560; (2)
the editions in which Tomson's New Testament of 1576 is substituted for the
1560 New Testament; and (3) the Bibles from 1598 that contain the Notes on

God's Outlaw: The Story of William Tyndale and the English Bible (1976,
third impression 1996)
This biography... is set in the colorful and cruel days of Henry VIII when men
were burned, racked and maimed for lesser crimes than that of smuggling the
Bible into England. When William Tyndale set out to provide the first printed
New Testament in English he was forced to do so in defiance of the king, pope,
and almost every person in authority. Compelled to flee from his homeland, he
continued with his work of translating the Scriptures whilst slipping from city
to city in Germany, Holland and Belgium in an attempt to avoid the agents who
were sent from England to arrest him. His story is one of poverty, danger and
ceaseless labor" (back cover). Tyndale was ultimately martyred due to
opposition from the emissaries of the civil and ecclesiastical beasts -- a
collection of cruel antichristian monsters that opposed themselves and the
Gospel in Tyndale's day. Among the many charges that led to his death (because
he translated the Bible into English) we find included: denying the free will
of man (a foundational tenet of popery, cf. Martin Luther's Bondage of the
Will and all the Reformed Confessions); maintaining that faith (in
Christ) alone justifies the sinner; denying purgatory exists, etc. Tyndale's
original translation of the New Testament is one of the six early English
translations once again available in the English Hexapla (http://www.swrb.com/bibles/bibles.htm
), which Still Waters Revival Books has recently reprinted.185 pages.

SECTION III. Concerning the meaning of the terms, Necessity, Impossibility,
Inability, &c. and of Contingence.
SECTION IV Of the distinction of natural and moral Necessity, and Inability.
SECTION V. Concerning the notion of Liberty, and of moral Agency.
II. Wherein it is considered, whether there is or can be any such sort of
Freedom of Will, as that wherein Arminians place the essence of the Liberty of
all Moral Agents; and whether any such thing ever was or can be conceived of.
SECTION I. Showing the manifest inconsistence of the Arminian notion of
Liberty of Will, consisting in the Will's self-determining Power.
SECTION II. Several supposed ways of evading the foregoing reasoning,
considered.
SECTION III. Whether any Event whatsoever, and Volition in particular, can
come to pass without a Cause of its existence.
SECTION IV. Whether Volition can arise without a Cause, through the activity
of the nature of the soul.
SECTION V. Showing, that if the things asserted in these Evasions should be
supposed to be true, they are altogether impertinent, and cannot help the cause
of Arminian Liberty; and how, this being the state of the case, Arminian
writers are obliged to talk inconsistently.
SECTION VI. Concerning the Will determining in things which are perfectly
indifferent in the view of the mind.
SECTION VII. Concerning the notion of Liberty of Will, consisting in
Indifference.
SECTION VIII. Concerning the supposed Liberty of the Will, as opposite to
all Necessity.
SECTION IX. Of the Connexion of the Acts of the Will with the Dictates of
the Understanding.
SECTION X. Volition necessarily connected with the influence of Motives;
with particular observations of the great inconsistence of Mr. Chubb's
assertions and reasonings about the Freedom of the Will.
SECTION XI. The evidence of God's certain Foreknowledge of the Volitions of
moral Agents.
SECTION XII. God's certain Foreknowledge of the future volitions of moral
agents, inconsistent with such a Contingence of those violations as is without
all Necessity.
SECTION XIII. Whether we suppose the volitions of moral Agents to be
connected with any thing antecedent, or not, yet they must be necessary in such
a sense as to overthrow Arminian Liberty.
III. Wherein is inquired, whether any such Liberty of Will as Arminians
hold, be necessary to Moral Agency, Virtue and Vice, Praise and Dispraise,
&c.
SECTION I. God's moral Excellency necessary, yet virtuous and praise-worthy.
SECTION II. The Acts of the Will of the human soul of Jesus Christ,
necessarily holy, yet truly virtuous, praise-worthy, rewardable, &c.
SECTION III. The case of such as are given up of God to sin, and of fallen
man in general, proves moral Necessity and Inability to be consistent with
Blameworthiness.
SECTION IV. Command and Obligation of Obedience, consistent with moral
Inability to obey.
SECTION V. That Sincerity of Desires and Endeavours, which is supposed to
excuse in the non-performance of things in themselves good, particularly
considered.
SECTION VI. Liberty of Indifference, not only not necessary to Virtue, but
utterly inconsistent with it; and all, either virtuous or vicious habits or
inclinations, inconsistent with Arminian notions of Liberty and moral Agency.
SECTION VII. Arminian notions of moral Agency inconsistent with all
influence of Motive and Inducement, in either virtuous or vicious actions.
IV. Wherein the chief grounds of the reasonings of Arminians, in support and
defence of the fore-mentioned notions of Liberty, Moral Agency, &c. and against
the opposite doctrine, are considered.
SECTION I. The Essence of the virtue and vice of dispositions of the heart,
and acts of the Will, lies not in their Cause, but their Nature.
SECTION II. The Falseness and Inconsistence of that metaphysical notion of
Action, and Agency, which seems to be generally entertained by the defenders of
the Arminian Doctrine concerning Liberty, moral Agency, &c.
SECTION III. The reasons why some think it contrary to common Sense, to
suppose those things which are necessary to be worthy of either Praise or
Blame.
SECTION IV. It is agreeable to common sense, and the natural notions of
mankind, to suppose moral Necessity to be consistent with Praise and Blame,
Reward and Punishment.
SECTION V. Objections, that this scheme of Necessity renders all Means and
Endeavours for avoiding Sin, or obtaining Virtue and Holiness, vain, and to no
purpose; and that it makes men no more than mere machines, in affairs of
morality and religion, answered.
SECTION VI. Concerning that objection against the doctrine which has been
maintained, that it agrees with the Stoical doctrine of Fate, and the opinions
of Mr. Hobbes.
SECTION VII. Concerning the Necessity of the Divine Will.
SECTION VIII. Some further objections against the moral Necessity of God's
Volitions considered.
SECTION IX. Concerning that objection against the doctrine which has been
maintained, that it makes God the Author of Sin.
SECTION X. Concerning sin's first Entrance into the world.
SECTION XI. Of a supposed Inconsistence between these principles and God's
moral character.
SECTION XII. Of a supposed tendency of these principles to Atheism and
Licentiousness.
SECTION XIII. Concerning that objection against the reasoning, by which the
Calvinistic doctrine is supposed, that it is metaphysical and abstruse.
SECTION XIV. The Conclusion.

A Dissertation Concerning the End for Which God Created the World
"Jonathan Edwards may be the greatest American theologian and philosopher
-- and perhaps also the greatest mind -- America has yet produced. Edwards'
theological genius lay in his ability to summarize effectively the main thrusts
of the Reformation and Puritanism and yet not merely to reiterate these, but to
apply them to crucial problems in his own century," states Christian
History magazine ("Jonathan Edwards and the Great Awakening," Vol. 4,
No. 4, p. 18). Here we see Edwards putting his lauded skills to work.

A Faithful Narrative of the Surprising Work of God
Originally written at the request of a number of ministers who wanted accurate
information about the "awakening" that took place in Edward's
congregation in 1735. This is Edward's own explanation and defense of this work
of God. It should be especially helpful in our day for contrasting God's work
with much of what is now passed off as "revival" but yet issues in
little or no practical obedience to the revealed will of God. This was one of
Edwards' most widely read books in his own day, and gained him international
recognition.

Freedom of the Will
"Considered Edwards' finest work, the treatise is a monument of
American philosophy," noted Christian
History magazine (Vol. 4, No. 4, p. 19).
Christian History continues,
In this treatise Edwards painstakingly shows that man
is indeed free... but that God is still sovereign and still solely responsible
for man's salvation. Edwards tries to show that a sinner -- and humans, in the
Calvinist tradition, come into the world under the curse of Adam -- would never
by himself choose to glorify God unless God himself changed that person's
character. Regeneration, God's act, is the basis for repentance and
conversion, the human actions.
John H. Gerstner writes,
In this book, Edwards annihilated false views of
the will that prevailed in his century and in ours, in order that men may know how to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ
and be saved. This profoundest of all Edwards' works is essentially
and intentionally an evangelistic tract.
- Dr. R.C. Sproul also comments,
In 1754 Edwards published The Freedom of the
Will, which although it was written long
before the modern debate over Open Theism, thoroughly answers and demolishes
the errors of this view.
The full title of Edwards' great philosophical work
is, "An Inquiry into the Modern Prevailing Notions of the Freedom of the
Will which is Supposed to be Essential to Moral Agency, Virtue and Vice, Reward
and Punishment, Praise and Blame." His text was Romans 9:16, "It
is not of him that willeth."
One of the authors that he was refuting was Daniel
Whitby, an Arminian minister in the Church
of England. Whitby was known for being strongly anti-Calvinistic, and later
gave evidence of strong Arian and Unitarian tendencies. In 1710 he had written his Discourse on the
Five Points [of Calvinism]. What Edwards interacted with most was
the fourth discourse on "The Liberty of the Will of Man in a State of
Trial and Probation."
Whitby's statement, "It is better to deny
prescience [foreknowledge] than liberty," is from that section. He also
said that it is better to say that God does not know the future, or that God
both does and doesn't know the future. One can see the "Openness of
God" theology in these statements three hundred years ago.
Edwards responded in The Freedom of the Will that man freely chooses whatever seems good to him,
but that what seems good to him is always based on an inherent predisposition. That
inherent predisposition has been foreordained and predestined by a sovereign
God who does not inhibit man's ability to freely choose from a limited menu. For
Edwards the issue regarding a totally free will is a simple one: either
contingency and the liberty of self-determination must be run out of this
world, or God will be shut out.
Pelagianism has a death grip on the modern
church. Perhaps the most important refutation of this distinctive is Edwards' Freedom
of the Will. I believe this is
the most important theological book ever published in America.
A detailed, careful, and strongly Calvinistic look at this important
question.

EDWARDS, JONATHAN
The History of Redemption
"[A]
massive theological treatise in the form of history," notes Christian History magazine (Vol. 4, No. 4, p. 6). Furthermore,
regarding Edwards' work on this book, CH states, "To prepare himself for the task,
he read every historical work he could lay his hands on. He planned to trace
the workings of God from Creation to his own day." Edwards
chronicles God's mercy and faithfulness to His Church and the destruction of
His enemies. Written from the older postmillennial perspective, useful insights
abound.
This is a most remarkable glimpse into the mind of President
Edwards. He boldly proclaims
the glorious future of Christ's Kingdom on earth BEFORE the return of Christ.

Jonathan Edward's History of Redemption is free in MP3 (audio) format beginning at http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?SID=917071614544
under the title, "History
of Redemption (Salvation) #1: God's Work, Creation To Judgment Day, With
Edward's Postmillennial Eschatology of Victory."
Below you will find a quote from Jonathan Edwards' History of Redemption, about the coming
success of the Church in the days of the Millennium, as prophesied in Isa. 2:2
("And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the
LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be
exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it."):
THE SUCCESS OF REDEMPTION THROUGH THAT SPACE WHEREIN THE
CHRISTIAN CHURCH SHALL, FOR THE MOST PART, BE IN A STATE OF PEACE AND
PROSPERITY.
In
order to describe this part, I would speak, first, of the prosperous state of
the church through the greatest part of this period...
I. I
would speak of the prosperous state of he church through the greater part of
this period. And in the general, I would observe two things,
1. That
this is most properly the time of the kingdom of heaven upon earth. Though the kingdom of heaven was on a degree set up
soon after Christ's resurrection, and in a further degree in the time of
Constantine, and though the Christian church in all ages of it is called the
kingdom of heaven; yet this is the principal time of the kingdom of heaven upon
earth, the time principally intended by the prophecies of Daniel whence the
Jews took the name of the kingdom of heaven.
2. Now is the principal fulfillment of all the prophecies of
the Old Testament which speak of the glorious times of the gospel in the latter
days. Though there has been a glorious fulfillment of those
prophecies already, in the times of the apostles, and of Constantine; yet the expressions are too high to suit any other time
entirely, but that which is to succeed the fall of Antichrist. This
is most properly the glorious day of the gospel. Other times are only
forerunners and preparatory to this: those were the seed-time, but this is the
harvest.
But
more particularly,
(1.) It
will be a time of great light and knowledge. The present, are days of darkness, in comparison of those days. -- The
light of that glorious time shall be so great, that it is represented as though
there should then be no night, but only day; no evening nor darkness. So
Zechariah 14:6-7.
"And
it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark.
But it shall be one day, which shall be known to the Lord, not day, nor night;
but it shall come to pass, that at evening-time it shill be light."
It is
further represented, as though God would then give such light to his church,
that it should so much exceed the glory of the light of the sun and moon, that
they should be ashamed:
"Then
the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall
reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients
gloriously." (Isaiah 24:23.)
There
is a kind of vail now cast over the greater part of the world, which keeps them
in darkness; but then this vail shall be destroyed: Isaiah 25:7.
"And
he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people,
and the vail that is spread over all nations."
Then
all countries and nations, even those which are now most ignorant, shall be
full of light and knowledge. Great
knowledge shall prevail everywhere. It may be hoped, that then many of the Negroes
and Indians will be divines, and that excellent books will be published in
Africa, in Ethiopia, in Tartary, and other now the most barbarous countries,
and not only learned men, but others of more ordinary education, shall then be
very knowing in religion: Isaiah 32:3, 4.
"The
eyes of them that see, shall not be dim; and the ears of them that hear, shall
hearken. The heart also of the rash shall understand knowledge."
Knowledge
then shall be very universal among all sorts of persons, Jeremiah 31:34.
"And
they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother,
saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto
the greatest of them."
There
shall then be a wonderful unravelling of the difficulties in the doctrines of
religion, and clearing up of seeming inconsistencies:
"So
crooked things shall be made straight, and rough places shall be made plain,
and darkness shall become light before God's people."
Difficulties
in Scripture shall then be cleared up,
and wonderful things shall be discovered in the word of God, which were never
discovered before. The great discovery of those things in religion which had
been before kept hid seems to be compared to removing the vail, and discovering
the ark of the testimony to the people, which before used to be kept in the
secret part of the temple, and was never seen by them.
Thus
at the sounding of the seventh Angel, when it is proclaimed, "that the
kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his
Christ," it is added, that " the temple of God was opened in heaven,
and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament." So great
shall be the increase of knowledge in this time, that heaven shall be as it
were opened to the church of God on earth.

Original Sin
When those who are devoid of the Spirit of God and reject revealed religion
meet up with the Scriptural doctrine of original sin, their comments expose
their hostility towards God and help exhibit the very principle they deny. For
example, Smellie comments on one reaction to this work of Edwards as follows:
"Mr. Lechy has condemned the treatise on Original Sin as 'one of the most
revolting books that have ever proceeded from the pen of man.'" Edwards
summarizes this book as "a general defence of that great important
doctrine," and has skillfully answered those who would assail the revealed
truth of God's Word at this point. If our doctrine is weak on man's nature and
(in)ability, all manner of false "help yourself" religion (e.g.
Arminianism, Romanism, the cults, the occult, etc.), and secular seduction
(e.g. psychology, socialism, etc.), based on man's inherent
"goodness" or ability to "save himself," will be given a
wide open door to run rampant. This book also contains a solid defense of the
doctrine of predestination.

Religious Affections
Considered Edwards' most important work in distinguishing between a true work
of God and the extremes of emotionalism and sensationalism that are known to
accompany "revivals." The book is divided into three parts: 1.)
Concerning the nature of the Affections, and their importance in religion; 2.)
Showing that there are no certain signs that religious affections are gracious,
or that they are not; 3.) Showing what are distinguishing signs of truly
gracious and holy affections.

Apologetical Narration of Mr. Goodwin, Mr. Nye, Mr. Simpson, Mr. Burroughs, Mr.
Bridge, members of the Assembly of Divines; Wherein are Handled Many of the
Controversies of These Times (1644)
Extremely scarce, this is one of the most important works answering the
Independents at the Westminster Assembly. Hetherington, in his famous History
of the Westminster Assembly, calls this
work "the most elaborate" answer to the Independents' Apologetical
Narration, "embracing every
disputed or suggested topic" (p. 190). He continues, "It will
scarcely be denied, by those who have carefully perused the Antapologia, that it furnishes a very ample and strong...

Narration. No formal reply was returned by
the Independents to the Antapologia"

EDWARDS, THOMAS
The Casting Down of the Last and Strongest Hold of Satan;
Or, A Treatise Against Toleration and Pretended Liberty of Conscience (1647)
The title continues: "Wherein by Scripture, sound Reason, Fathers, Schoolmen,
Casuists, Protestant Divines of all Nations, Confessions of Faith of the
Reformed Churches, Ecclesiastical Histories, and constant practice of the most
pious and wisest Emperors, Princes, States, the best Writers of Politicks, the
experience of all Ages; yea, by divers Principles, Testimonies and Proceedings
of Sectaries themselves, as Donatists, Anabaptists, Brownists, Independents,
the unlawfulness and mischief in Christian Commonwealths and Kingdoms both of a
Universal Toleration of all Religions and Consciences, and of a limited and
bounded (toleration--RB) of some Sects only, are clearly proved and
demonstrated, with all the material Grounds and Reasons brought for such
Tolerations fully answered."
This title (representing the
English Presbyterian position) is very much akin to the Scottish view found in Samuel
Rutherford's classic A Free Disputation Against
Pretended Liberty of Conscience. It is also comparable
to the position of the Covenanted Scottish General Assembly as seen in this
sample quote,
(W)e are also very sensible of the great and
imminent dangers into which this common cause of religion is now brought by the
growing and spreading of most dangerous errors in England to the obstructing
and hindering of the begun Reformation, as namely (beside many others)
Socinianism, Arminianism, Anabaptism, Antinomianism, Brownism, Erastianism,
Independency, and that which is called (by abuse of
the word) Liberty of Conscience, being indeed Liberty of Error, Scandal,
Schism, Heresy, dishonouring God, opposing the Truth, hindering Reformation;
and seducing others" (Acts of the General Assembly of the
Church of Scotland 1638-1649 Inclusive,
p. 333).
In short, this work of Edwards' is "a treatise against the Magistrates toleration and
permission of a promiscuous use and profession of all religions, sects and
heresies, and a partial limited toleration of some few sects, or of any one
sect, way of worship, church government different from the true religion
established and settled." It
also deals in great Scriptural depth with many of the questions being debated
in our day among Reconstructionists and their opponents (concerning God's law,
civil government, etc.). This
book was published by the authority of the English Parliament of Edwards' day. 224 pages.

many of the Errors, Heresies, Blasphemies and pernicious Practices of the
Sectaries (i.e. Independents like Thomas Goodwin-RB) of this time, vented and

The title continues: "Also a particular Narration of divers Stories,
Remarkable Passages, Letters; an Extract of many Letters, all concerning the
present Sects; together with some Observations upon, and Corollaries from all
the fore-named Premises." The second part even notes that it contains a
"copy of a hymn sung by some Sectaries instead of David's Psalms;" and
includes replies to some pamphlets (by Saltmarsh, Bacon, etc.) against the
first part of Edward's work. In short, this book is written to stay "the

State, if not timely prevented." The summary for the Third Part of

Reasons Against the Independent Government of Particular Congregations:
As Also Against the Toleration of Such Churches To Be Erected in this Kingdom
-- Together With an Answer to Such Reasons as are Commonly Alleged for Such a
Toleration (1641)
Edwards was "a famous Presbyterian writer, and a violent opposer of the
Independents. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge where he took his degree
of B.A. 1605, and of M.A. 1609. Having received ordination he became a
lecturer, first at Hertford, and afterwards in London. Died in Holland 1647,
whither he had fled to avoid the resentment of the (Oh so tolerant--RB)
Independents," writes Darling (Cyclopedia Bibliographica, p.
1026). An important work defending that which is necessary for the well-being
of the visible church -- against the heresy of the Independents (especially
schismatics such as Goodwin and Nye who attended and hindered the work of
Westminster Assembly). 73 pages. For a fuller treatment of this same subject

The Third Part of Gangraena: or a new and higher Discovery of the Errors,
Heresies, Blasphemies and insolent Proceedings of the Sectaries of these times;
with some Animadversions by way of Confutation upon many of the Errors and
Heresies named (1646)
More against the sectarian Independents; with some special attention given to
Thomas Goodwin's attempted refutation of Edwards' Antapologia
(which was a devastating refutation of the Independent's positions found in the
Apologetical Narration of Goodwin, Nye,
Simpson, Burroughs, Bridge; all who were members of the Westminster Assembly),
Jeremiah Burroughs and other prominent detractors from the ranks of the
schismatic covenant breakers hindering the work of the Westminster Assembly.
Darling calls these works "very scare" and notes that Edwards wrote
"in a spirit of fierce and bitter invective" (Cyclopedia
Bibliographica, p. 1026). Edwards had
already replied to this charge in his day in this very book, which includes a
lengthy "justification of the manner and way of writing these books called
Gangraena, wherein not only the
lawfulness, but the necessity of writing after this manner (i.e. naming names
and "rebuking them sharply," Titus 1:13 -- RB) is proved by
Scripture, Fathers, the most eminent Reformed Divines (including Calvin,
Luther, Beza, Bullinger and others--RB), Casuists, the practice and custom of
all ages" -- including the practice of the Independents themselves. It is
startling to note the great inroads that the errors of independency, answered
in this book, have made throughout modern "evangelicalism" -- even
among those who call themselves Reformed: making this book extremely pertinent
for our day. This work is conveniently indexed by using both the names of the
Independents refuted and also their particular heresies and errors. 328 pages.

EIRE, CARLOS M.N.
War Against the Idols: The Reformation of Worship from
Erasmus to Calvin
Eire shows that as
the Reformation progressed the primary focus of the Reformers became upholding
God's sovereign prerogative in worship -- what today is called the regulative
principle of worship. Eire's War
Against the Idols demonstrates the
extent of the Reformers clear condemnation of Arminianism
in worship (i.e. will-worship [Col. 2:23]) in rejecting all elements of worship
that did not have Scriptural warrant. In fact, Calvin was so intent
on highlighting this point, concerning the centrality of worship (and the
application of Sola Scriptura
as exhibited in the
regulative principle of worship), that he
placed worship ahead of salvation in his list of the two most important
elements of Biblical Christianity. Regarding Calvin's On the Necessity of
Reforming the Church Eire notes,
Calvin speaks about
the nature of worship and about the seriousness of the sin of idolatry in his
1543 treatise, On the Necessity of Reforming the Church, where he concentrates on the significance of worship
for the Christian religion. Calvin's argument, as indicated by the title of the
treatise, is that the Church had reached such a corrupt state that its reform
could wait no longer. The most significant aspect
of corruption singled out by Calvin is the perversion of worship,
and it is in explaining this issue that he set forth the basis for his attack
on idolatry.
Calvin
begins by studying the place that worship holds in the Christian faith, and he
concludes that it is one of the two elements that define Christianity:
If it be asked,
then, by what things chiefly the Christian religion has a standing amongst us,
and maintains its truth, it will be found that the following two not only
occupy the principal place, but comprehend under them all the other parts, and
consequently the whole substance of Christianity, viz., a knowledge first, of the right way to worship God; and
secondly of the source from which salvation is to be sought. When these are
kept out of view, though we may glory in the name of Christians, our profession
is empty and vain. (War
Against the Idols, p. 198, citing
from Calvin's On the Necessity of Reforming the Church [FREE at: http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualnls/NRC_ch00.htm ] ,
emphases added).
The scholarly
translational work found in Eire's book also gives insights into the worship question not found in any other
English history books (concerning Calvin, Knox, and a host of others) --
for it contains much from previously untranslated (into English, that is)
Reformation documents.
A large portion of this book centers on
Calvin, but its major thrust is to reveal the single
most burning issue confronting the Reformers: purity of worship! Furthermore, this book's
teaching regarding the Reformers (and their view of the Scriptural law of
worship) is as applicable today as it was in the days of the first Reformation
-- for it brings to light the time-tested
Biblical principles which guard against the errors, excesses, and idolatries of
the Roman harlot (Roman Catholicism), Eastern Orthodoxy and all liturgical
innovators on one hand and the modern "evangelicals" (including the sub-Reformed movement
headed up by the likes of Steve
Schlissel, John Frame, Doug Wilson et al.), Anabaptists and Charismatics on the other.
This is, without a doubt, one of the best Reformation history books
available -- stirring, scholarly, relevant and edifying!

counsel I would like to give to a believer who thus dwells in some Egypt or
Babylon where he may not worship God purely, but is forced by the common
practice to accommodate himself to bad things. The
first advice would be to leave [i.e. relocate--GB] if he could. . .
. If someone has no way to depart, I would counsel him to consider whether it
would be possible for him to abstain from all idolatry in order to preserve himself
pure and spotless toward God in both body and soul. ***Then
let him worship God in private*** (in his home--RB), praying him to
restore his poor church to its right estate (John Calvin, Come Out From

ELLIOTT, E.B.
Horae Apocalypticae; or, A Commentary on the Apocalypse,
Critical and Historical; Including Also An Examination of the Chief Prophecies
of Daniel (1862,
4 volumes)
The title continues: "Illustrated by an
Apocalyptic Chart, and Engravings from Medals and Other Extant Monuments of
Antiquity. With Appendices: Containing, Besides Other matters, A Sketch of the
History of Apocalyptic Interpretation, Critical Reviews of the Chief
Apocalyptic Counter-Schemes, and Indices."
This four volume set is respected by many as
a scholarly work on eschatology. It will be especially valuable in our day
as it absolutely destroys the Jesuit inspired preterist system by conclusively
proving a late date for the writing of the book of Revelation. Elliott also demonstrates the impossibility of the futurist
system, which, like preterism, was also concocted (as a system) by the Jesuits
to counteract the classic Reformation eschatology called historicism. That this is no small issue is clear, as Kevin Reed
exhibits (in his book review titled "The Ecclesiology of John Foxe: A book
review by Kevin Reed of John Foxe and the Elizabethan Church by V. Norskov Olsen [Berkeley: University of
California Press, 1973]") by citing Olsen when he writes,
The Counter Reformation is
generally considered to have three aspects: the Jesuits, the Inquisition, and
the Council of Trent. In view of the significance of the Protestant apocalyptic
interpretation of history which prophetically pinpointed step by step the
events covering the whole Christian era from the beginning to the end, it seems
justifiable to suggest a fourth aspect, namely the praeteristic and futuristic
interpretations launched by Catholic expositors as a counterattack (p. 47).
All the major Reformers and
all the major Reformation creeds and confessions adopted the historicist
position -- and it is this position that Elliott so skillfully defends. Included in Horae Apocalypticae you will also find a very useful historical survey of
who held which positions concerning eschatology, much history on the Roman
empire (and its interaction with Christianity), how
the Reformation, Islam, etc. were prophesied in the Apocalypse, a
world chronology according to the Hebrew Scriptures (which would make the Earth
6127 years old), patristic views of prophecy, the beast and his mark (666)
revealed, and much more. The Papacy is also shown
to be the apocalyptic antichrist, which was a standard position among the
Reformers. Elliott also deals with Moses Stuart's Preterism.
Concerning Elliott's Horae
Apocalypticae H. Gratton Guinness,
writes,
The "Horae Apocalypticae" of Elliott,
which may well be considered as the most
important and valuable commentary of the Apocalypse which has ever been written,
was also called into existence by Futurist attacks
on the Protestant interpretation of prophecy (and the same would apply in our
day, but even more so, as the classic Protestant system of interpretation for
the book of Revelation is still being undermined by the Jesuit inspired
Futurist system, but also, increasingly [even in so-called "Reformed"
circles] by the other Jesuit inspired system: Preterism!--RB). In
his preface to the fifth edition Elliott says:
When I first began to give attention to the
subject some twenty years ago, it was the increasing prevalence among Christian
men in our country of the Futurist system of Apocalyptic interpretation -- a system which involved the abandonment of the opinion
held by all the chief fathers and doctors of our Church respecting the Roman
Popes and Popedom as the great intended antichristian power of
Scripture-prophecy, -- that suggested to me the desirableness and
indeed the necessity, of a more thoroughly careful investigation of the whole
subject than had been made previously. For thereby I trusted that we might see
God's mind on the question; all engaged in that controversy being alike agreed
as to the fact of its being expressed in this prophecy, rightly understood: and
whether indeed in His view Popery was that
monstrous evil, and the Reformation a deliverance to our Church and nation as
mighty and blessed, as we had been taught from early youth to regard them...
Elliott's Commentary was practically the work
of the lifetime of one of the most learned and laborious expositors of modern
times. Like Gibbon's "History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman
Empire," to which it frequently refers, it stands alone in its sphere, as
a monumental work of surpassing value. The ten thousand references it contains
to ancient and modern works bearing on the subject elucidated greatly enhance
its value. We may safely say that during the half century which has elapsed
since it publication, no other work on historic lines of interpretation has
appeared of equal importance (History Unveiling Prophecy or Time as an
Interpreter [at http://www.swrb.com/catalog/g.htm ], pp.
297-299, emphases added).
"Furthermore, in 1878, Charles Haddon
Spurgeon wrote the classic reference work Commenting on Commentaries. The 'prince of preachers' surveyed over 1,400
commentaries on the books of the Bible providing bible students and pastors
with a valuable guide for selecting books for their libraries. His comments are
often as entertaining as they are helpful. Each book of the bible forms a
chapter in this work.. Spurgeon provides pithy analysis and offers his
recommendation of the best commentary and those to avoid. When he reaches the book of Revelation his clear
recommendation is E.B. Elliott's Horae Apocalypticae. He succinctly states that
it was "the standard work". It would surprise most Baptists today to
realize that this most eminent Baptist preacher was himself an Historicist or
Continuist as he called it then. Elliott's work was the standard work in 1878
because the Historicist interpretation was still the standard in Protestantism
and this work had gone through 4 editions and had established itself as the
standard within the Historicist school. Elliot had died three years
earlier in 1875" (from: http://www.historicist.com).
Biographical Information (from http://www.historicist.com/horae.com)
"Edward Bishop Elliott (1793-1875),
scholarly prophetic expositor, received his education at Trinity College,
Cambridge, graduating in 1816. After traveling in Italy and Greece he was given
the vicarage of Tuxford, Nottingham, in 1824, and later was made prebendary of
Heytesbury, Wiltshire. In 1849 he became incumbent of St. Mark's Church,
Brighton. A member of the Evangelical school, he was an earnest promoter of
missionary enterprise and an ardent advocate of premillennialism. Elliott was
thoroughly equipped as a scholar and was deeply interested in prophecy,
spending a lifetime in investigation and seeking to understand God's mind
thereon. His Horae Apocalypticae (Hours with the Apocalypse) [literally 'time with the
Apocalypse'] is doubtless the most elaborate work ever produced on the
Apocalypse... Begun in 1837, its 2500
pages of often involved and overloaded text are buttressed by some 10,000
invaluable references to ancient and modern works bearing on the topics under
discussion.... Perhaps its most unique feature is the concluding
sketch of the rise and spread of the Jesuit counter systems of interpretation
that had made such inroads upon Protestantism. Holding unswervingly to the Historical
School of interpretation, Elliott gives the most complete exposure of these
counter interpretations to be found."
(The Prophetic Faith of Our Fathers,
Leroy Froom vol. III, pp. 716-718)
Sadly, one major
warning needs to be given about this book. However valuable the contents
are as a defense of historicism (and the late date of the book of Revelation),
the author adopted the premillennial heresy (meaning a destructive heresy and
not necessarily a damnable heresy; see George Gillespie's Truth and Heresy, free at: http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualnls/TruthHer.htm, for more on the distinction between destructive and
damnable heresies) and thus marred an otherwise useful work when he promotes
these views. 2611 pages, with a 29 page index.

ELLIOTT, E.B. (Alexander M'Leod, David Steele, George Faber,
Thomas Newton)
Islam in Revelation: An Historic Look at Protestant
Eschatological Thought on the Rise and Fall of Islam
Considering the prominent place in Scripture
that God apportions to revealing Islam as one of
the most significant antichristian forces in history (and in the
light of the rise and progress of Islam in our day), Still Waters Revival Books
presents the following information to all serious-minded Christians with the
hope that it will be a great encouragement to your faith.
There are two great
antichristian religious systems of deceit revealed in the book of Revelation. The "great western antichrist" of Roman
Catholicism (Rev. 17 and 18) and the "great eastern antichrist" of
Islam (Rev. 9). This has been the majority position of historic Protestant
interpretation (Historicism) for centuries (as all the most faithful Reformers
and all the Reformation creeds and confessions attest). For example, the
illustrious John Calvin proclaimed that "Mahomet"
and "the Pope" are "the two horns of Antichrist."
The following six extracts on
Islam's place in prophecy are taken from five Historicist books which Still
Waters Revival Books has published over the past years (see the URLs noted
below for the full printed editions of each title). These extracts not only clearly show that the rise and
fall of Islam is prophesied in Scripture, but they also give us one of the most
powerful testimonies to God's sovereignty (over all His creatures and all their
actions) in all of the Word of God. In fact, when the historicist position is
carefully studied, the prophetic fulfillment in the case of Islam and
Revelation chapter nine is seen to be so striking and well attested that "even advocates of other approaches who are adamant in
their rejection of the historicist system of interpretation have admitted the
convincing nature of this particular identification" (Steve Gregg, commenting on Rev. 9:1-6 in Revelation:
Four Views, p. 176).
We hope that you will prayerfully consider the
information in this book and that it will help to open the door to many other
marvellous truths that God has for you in His Word.
The following six excerpts
on Islam in Revelation comprise 105 printed pages and are taken from:
1. Horae
Apocalypticae; or, A Commentary on the Apocalypse, Critical and Historical;
Including Also An Examination of the Chief Prophecies of Daniel (1862, http://www.swrb.com/catalog/E.htm)

Apostacies; The Tyrannical Reign of Antichrist, or the Infidel Power; and the
Restoration of the Jews (2 volumes, 1811, http://www.swrb.com/catalog/F.htm) by
George Faber (vol. 1, pp. 177-212; vol. 2, pp. 269-288)
5. Dissertations
on the Prophecies Which Have Remarkably Been Fulfilled, and at this Time are
Fulfilling in the World (2 volumes, 1817, http://www.swrb.com/catalog/N.htm) by Thomas Newton (vol. 2, pp. 222-232)
We conclude our summary of Islam in Revelation with a short note
from Dr. F. Nigel Lee's Calvin and Islam (also
available at http://www.swrb.com/catalog/L.htm),
John Calvin writes:
" In our own day, indeed [1550], very many people begin to waver --
when they consider the long continued dispersion of the Church. As if this had not been regulated by the purpose of God!... The pretext of the [preteristic] Romanists which they make in extenuation of
the tyranny of their idol [the Papacy] -- is that it was not possible for
Christ to forsake His bride. But here, the weak have an assurance on which to
rest -- when they learn that the disfigurement
which they see in the Church, has long since been foretold.
"The impudence of the Romanists, on the other hand, is clearly
exposed. Because Paul declares that when the World has been brought under
the rule of Christ -- a defection will take place....
"The minds of [Romanizing] ancients were
so bewitched -- that they believed [preteristically] that Nero would be Antichrist! However, Paul is not speaking of one individual -- but of a kingdom
that was to be seized by Satan, for the purpose of setting up a seat of abomination
in the midst of God's Temple. This we see accomplished in Popery.
"The
defection has indeed spread more widely! For, since Mohammed was an apostate, he turned his
followers, the Turks, from Christ.... The sect of Mohammed was like a raging overflow, which in
its violence tore away about half of the Church. It remained for
[the Papal] Antichrist to infect with his poison the part which was left."
Yet, in the words the Lord Jesus shall slay'
in Second Thessalonians 2:8 -- Calvin insists Paul "predicted the destruction of the reign of Antichrist.... He
will be annihilated by the Word of the Lord....
"Paul does not think that Christ will
accomplish this in a single moment....
Christ will scatter the darkness in which Antichrist will reign, by the rays
which He will emit before His coming --
just as the sun, before becoming visible to us, chases away the darkness of
the night with its bright light.
Furthermore, Dr. Lee writes,
It does seem that the fourth iron kingdom was
in fact both the pre-Papal and the pre-Islamic undivided
Pagan Roman Empire, as well as the later
Western-Roman Papal and the
contemporaneous Eastern-Roman Islamic Empire
into which it then subdivided. Indeed,
both "Mahomet" and "the Pope" -- as we have already seen --
Dr. Calvin called "the two horns of Antichrist."
Thus they correspond to the two legs of
the later Roman Empire -- Islam and the Papacy.

Preterism Refuted ([1862] 2000, 3 cassettes)
Contains all of the sections from Elliott's classic
Horae Apocalypticae; or, A Commentary on the Apocalypse which
directly refute preterism ("Critical Examination and Refutation of the
Chief Counter-Schemes of Apocalyptic Interpretation," Vol. 4, Appendix part
2, pp. 564-599) -- as well as a defense of the late date for the book of
Revelation (Vol. 1, Essay 2, pp. 32-48; Vol. 1, Appendix, pp. 533-548) and a
defense of the Scriptural "year-day" principle of prophetic
Protestant interpretation (Vol. 3, pp. 260ff.). Furthermore, these tapes show
why it is Scripturally impossible for Nero to be the antichrist, while also
taking a few passing shots a futurism (though most of what Elliott wrote
against futurism can only be found in the complete printed set of Horae Apocalypticae).
Also included are:
1. Fairbairn's "Is Popery the Antichrist: The Tendency to Describe
Things According to the Reality, Rather Than the Appearance or Profession (from Appendix "L" in The Interpretation of Prophecy,
$39.95, hardcover,
summary at: http://www.swrb.com/catalog/F.htm).
2. L'Avenir's "Apocalyptic Interpretation: The Six Major Views" (originally
published in Reformed Presbyterian magazine in Scotland [Oct., 1856] and more recently republished in
the Original Covenanter &
Contending Witness magazine available at http://www.swrb.com/catalog/C.htm
-- this article gives a succinct overview and outline [including the origins]
of the following views of apocalyptic interpretation: 1. The Anti-Protestant
Futurist theory [prominent in our day among dispensationalists and most other
premillennialists]; 2. The Anti-Protestant Preterist theory [prominent in our
day among Reconstructionists and some Roman Catholics]; 3. The Modified
Futurist theory; 4. The Typico-Spiritual theory [or Idealism]; 5.The Parallel
Septenary theory; 6. The Continuous Historical Protestant theory [i.e. the
Biblical/Reformation view prominent among those that still embrace the
unadulterated creeds and confessions of historic Protestantism -- a teaching
primarily know today as Historicism].).
3. A fantastic overview of the book of
Revelation from chapter two of M'Leods Lectures Upon the Principal Prophecies of the
Revelation ($9.99 P; $19.00 HP, summary at: http://www.swrb.com/catalog/M.htm)
4. A brief extract from Steele's Notes on
the Apocalypse ($9.99 P; $14.00 HP; $14.95 on 8 cassettes,
summary at: http://www.swrb.com/catalog/S.htm)
concerning prerequisites to correctly understanding the book of Revelation.
5. The reader's (i.e. Larry Birger's) introduction and narration.
These tapes are a good answer to Ken Gentry's recent articles on the heads
of the beast and antichrist and Gary Demar's elementary attempt at dismissing
the historic Protestant view that the papacy is the antichrist/man of sin. Reg
Barrow also notes,
If I'd had access to this information before I
became a Preterist as a young Christian I doubt that I would have ever embraced
this erroneous, Jesuit-inspired, reformation-denying heresy -- I can
only thank God that He has now led me to the eschatology of the Scriptures and of
our Reformed forefathers (what is commonly called historicism). These tapes
will (D.V.) be devastating to the Romish views of eschatology that have become
commonplace among Protestants who have backslidden from the biblical
attainments and revival of Apostolic Christianity that took place during the
Reformation.

Assembled in Parliament After Advice had with the (Westminster--RB) Assembly of
Divines, for the Ordination of Ministers pro Tempore, according to the
Directory for Ordination, and Rules for Examination, therein expressed."
Because many congregations were "destitute of able and faithful
ministers" this ordinance was implemented "until a Government of the
Church be formed up to the full power and work of it, and the whole course of
ordination of ministers in an ordinary way be set up and settled for all the
three Kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland" (p.3). Interestingly,
among the prerequisites to ordination we find that each candidate was to
"bring with him a testimonial of his taking of the Covenant of the three
Kingdoms (i.e. the Solemn League and Covenant--RB)." Clearly then, no one
could be a lawfully ordained minister in any of these three national
Presbyterian Churches without swearing the Solemn League and Covenant -- and
this being in accord with Scripture, this prerequisite remains binding upon the
moral person of the church. This book lists other qualifications for ministers
(prior to examination), along with the rules used during examination -- and
includes many other useful points of order (1 Cor. 14:40). 15 pages.

The Scripturalness of Infant Baptism and of Sprinkling in Baptism
"Nothing admits of being more clearly demonstrated," writes Dr.
McCrie, "than that baptism of children was practised from the earliest
ages of the church." This book makes good on this claim, citing early
church fathers (even Iranaeus, who was born before the death of the Apostle
John) attesting to this fact. The Reformers are also called upon to bear
testimony to God's truth. This is followed by the numerous unassailable
Biblical arguments attesting to the fact that the sign of the everlasting
covenant has never been repealed by God, and is still (as in the OT) to be
administered to believers' children. After all, nowhere does the Bible teach
that Christ's work diminished the privileges extended to the seed of believers
(which would be to argue that because of Christ's work the new administration
of God's covenant is less glorious than the old). Sprinkling is then defended,
"burying" Baptist objections. One interesting argument includes
Paul's baptism (Acts 9:17), where "the inspired record says "anastas
ebaptishe" having stood up he was baptised."

Works of Ebenezer Erskine (3
volumes)
John Macleod in his Scottish Theology writes how Erskine (1680-1754)
"was distinguished in his preaching for the exhibition that he gave of the
freeness of the gospel of Christ and of the majesty with which that gospel sets
before us the God of all grace."

ERSKINE, EBENEZER & RALPH, JAMES FISHER, and OTHERS
The Westminster Assembly's Shorter Catechism Explained, By
Way of Question and Answer (1753, 1911 edition)
The
title continues: "Wherein it is essayed to
bring forth the truths of God contained in that excellent composure, more fully
than has been attempted in any one of the explicatory Catechisms hitherto
published...."
Dr. M'Crie writes, "(t)his well-known work was very
generally employed by ministers as their test-book at the public examinations
of their people, when both old and young were duly catechised. This was, in
fact, a profound system of divinity, and was especially devoted to an
explanation of the Marrow doctrines" (cited in the Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 474).
Mackay
notes that it "displays a rich fund of sound
theological practical erudition; and it soon became, and still continues to be,
the favorite religious manual in thousands of Scotland's religious families,
and had associated his name (i.e. Fisher--RB) with the Erskines especially as a
household word" (Ibid.).
We have also added in the original sections of this book that
were taken out by the backsliding (American) Presbyterians that published this
later edition. And what
they left out is very telling about their defection from Reformation
attainments. Among other things they
deleted sections dealing with worship (iconoclasm), national covenanting, civil
government, toleration, capital punishment (as proved from Old Testament case
law), baptism, etc. We have placed all these
previously excluded questions and answers in a separate section at the front of
the book so that it will be easy for you to see what these unfaithful editors
did not want you to see. Thus,
you still get the benefit of the superior typesetting of this later edition,
with the full text as the original (more Reformed) authors intended it. 485
pages, indexed.

ERSKINE, RALPH
Faith No Fancy: Or, A Treatise of Mental Images (1745)
The
title continues: "Discovering the vain
Philosophy and vile Divinity of a late Pamphlet, entitled, Mr. Robe's fourth
Letter to Mr. Fisher, and Showing, that an imaginary Idea of Christ as Man,
(when supposed to belong to saving Faith, whether in its Act or Object),
imports nothing but Ignorance, Atheism, Idolatry, great Falsehood, and gross
Delusion." David Lachman calls this "Erskine's
most extensive publication," noting that it "was a contribution to
the controversy with the Church of Scotland ministers involved in the
Cambuslang revival" (Cameron, ed., Dictionary of Scottish
Church History and Theology, p. 302).
We have added Erskine's sermon "The True Christ, No New Christ"
(1742) and Fisher's "Review of What Has Been Called an Extraordinary Work
at Cambuslang, Kelsyth, etc." from the 1805 Philadelphia edition of this
work. A very pertinent book given all the idolatry
connected with the senses, pictures of Christ, etc. in our day. 523
pages.

The Works of Ralph Erskine (6 volumes, 1865)
Though titled the Works of Ralph Erskine, it is made up only of his sermons. It contains 154
sermons on various topics, with an additional 14 sermons on prayer in the final
volume.
Of Erskine, David Lachman writes,
"He refused to
take the Oath of Abjuration... He took full part in the Marrow Controversy, being
the first to reply to Thomas Boston's letter suggesting concerted action, and
sharing the ultimate rebuke. His
published sermons from the time of the controversy, particularly in the 1720s,
illustrate the doctrines of grace, guard against legalism and proclaim the
'Marrow" doctrine in general. His sermons are full of the love of God and
offers of Christ in the gospel... Erskine took full part in the work of the
Associate Presbytery, including preaching tours throughout Scotland, and in
the renewal of the Covenants, when he preached Covenanted Grace for
Covenanting Work... The Secession attracted considerable attention outside
Scotland, and Erskine corresponded with, among others, Gilbert Tennant, John
Wesley and George Whitefield. Whitefield particularly expressed his gratitude
for Erskine's sermons. But, on Whitefield's coming to Scotland, disagreements,
particularly over church government, led to a breach... Various of his works
were printed in America and translations were made into Dutch from 1744, having
great influence in the Netherlands" (Cameron, ed., Dictionary of
Scottish Church History and Theology,
p. 302, emphases added).
3,926 pages in six volumes.
