"These Puritan resources are the greatest I've ever seen. These eyes have never seen anything greater than what you have produced except that old King James Bible" (Email from a Customer in Georgia, USA).

Some Additional Customer Comments on SWRB's CD sets (Reformation, Calvinism, Protestant, Puritan).

"This collection of… CDs is a truly astounding accomplishment. There is nothing like this available to the ordinary Christian on the whole face of the earth. Now, for the first time ever, ordinary Christians can have direct and near effortless access to the very cream of Puritan and Reformed, as well as Covenanter, literature... What they used to say of the Puritan John Flavel's preaching, can be said of these CDs: they are 'hissing hot'! ... more" (emphases added).

(Scholar of 16th and 17th century Calvinistic literature.)

"The purchase of (SWRB's) CD's is proving to be one of the wisest investments that I have ever made. They are much more than I expected!! I am having a wonderful time reading and studying."

"The greatest collection of classic Reformation resources on one CD set ever!"

"In reading this mornings mailing I noticed that you also do the Reformation Bookshelf CD's so I went to your web site to see what was out -- I was in ecstasy!!!"

Full SWRB CD comment from Dr. McMahon:

"I have been systematically working through reading the Puritan and Reformed CDs I purchased.

I must say, there is nothing like them available anywhere.

It is the most amazing collection of works I know of in one package to date.

In my opinion, it far surpasses Ages Software and their collections.*

The Puritan and Reformed material presented on these CDs is exceptional.

I am continually amazed at the depth and breadth of information in both collections, and the rarity of works that I now have at my fingertips.

You have done an immeasurable service for the Kingdom of Christ in making these CDs available, and every pastor and theologian should own them without question (they would be foolhardy to pass them by)."

* It is SWRB's opinion that Ages has done an excellent job in making various Reformed works available on CD, so much so that we also distribute a number of their CDs at discounts. Thus, please don't make more out of our publishing this comment than is warranted, as this is a comment we received from one of our customers and it expresses his opinion. As for Ages' work, we rejoice whenever the truth is published, whether through others or through SWRB (as we play only a very small part in the revival of classic Reformation, Puritan and Covenanter thought that is now taking place worldwide through God's marvelous grace). The publication of the best Reformers and Puritans of the past is one of the greatest needs of our time, as this extends the blessings that come through faithful preachers and authors into our day and into the future. Lord willing, the growth in the publishing of faithful works from the past will help stem the tide of the great declension and unfaithfulness which we are now witnessing all around us, even (sadly) among many churches that still call themselves "Presbyterian" and/or "Reformed." So please pray together with us that our Lord will multiple the number of faithful publishers and publications, and that He will give many the heart to stand for the truth no matter the consequences (as He has done for our faithful forefathers, who resisted Satan and sin unto blood and even to martyrdom in many cases). -- RB.

"SWRB's Puritan and Reformation CD libraries are an invaluable source for the study of the history and theology of classic Reformation theology. The collection is remarkable not only for depth of content, but also for the rarity of many of the works. Most seminary libraries will not have even a percentage of the works available on these CD-ROMs. I cannot imagine anyone working in Reformation / historical theology that would not want to use the Puritan and Reformed libraries!"

- Phillip J. Long
Associate Prof. of New Testament
Grace Bible College

"I just received your CD collection. One bit of advice: you should instruct your customers to take about 1 week off just to peruse the tables of contents for these CD's, followed by another week off, in order to recover from the state of shock in which they will find themselves.

In all seriousness, this collection is almost impossible to describe. It has to be seen to be believed. As a pastor, my library has just increased dramatically. As a Ph.D. student in Puritan and Post-Reformation studies, I have immediate access to many of the same works for which I would normally need to access through rare book rooms of theological libraries.

Thank you for this labor of love. Thank you for making it accessible, both financially and technologically. May the Lord richly bless you for this service to his people."

- Yours for the faith,
Pastor David Owen Filson
Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church (PCA), Nashville, TN

"You all are doing a wonderful service by making all these materials so readily available. Having them on my hard drive is BETTER than having access to a rare book library with all of them in hand... I have found the CD set invaluable as a tool of scholarship. So once again I commend you brothers for making it available."

- Dr. E. Calvin Beisner

Examining Contemporary Revivalism, as well as other books, scholarly papers, and contributions to various anthologies).

"It's been several weeks now since I received the CDs and have had some time to digest some of them. All I can say is, "WOW!" This is truly a library like no other, and has already paid great dividends not only in my own personal worship and study, but in my teaching as well. I first balked at the price, but after seeing the vastness of the material, I almost feel as though I'm robbing you!

I pray that the Lord will allow you to get these materials into the hands of as many ministers as possible."

Full SWRB CD comment from Dr. Moore:

This collection of 62 CDs is a truly astounding accomplishment. There is nothing like this available to the ordinary Christian on the whole face of the earth.

Now, for the first time ever, ordinary Christians can have direct and near effortless access to the very cream of Puritan and Reformed, as well as Covenanter, literature.

These books are often in fascinating first editions and many are electronically linked and indexed for the first time. The ordinary Christian may here dig into a simply staggering wealth of literature, from devotional and sermonic material to technical and scholarly works. Even in the days of the Long Reformation itself ordinary Christians didn't get to see this kind of library -- most couldn't read for a start, and even those who could, would never have been able to afford to buy even a hundredth part of the material on these CDs. Truly we are without excuse!

And the significance of this collection goes even beyond that. No longer do we have to wait for modern Reformed publishing houses to predict that a particular Reformation or Puritan book will be sufficiently popular to make it economical to reprint, or to deem it "safe" enough to be let loose on the modern evangelical church. Rather, we are now able to see for ourselves the whole range of the Puritan and Reformed publishing enterprise, including views that are usually suppressed by most modern devotees of "Puritan" piety!

Buy these CDs while you can, and find out for yourself what the First and Second Reformations were really all about! You'll be truly amazed, and, by God's grace, will grow from being an ordinary Christian to being an extraordinary one. What they used to say of the Puritan John Flavel's preaching, can be said of these CDs: they are "hissing hot"!

- Dr Jonathan D. Moore, Cambridge, UK.
(Scholar of 16th and 17th century Calvinistic literature.)

"This side of eternity I'll never be able to repay the favor you have done mankind by bringing these... CDs together.

The first week of reading I grew more as a Christian reading those rich, pure Gospel Commentators than I have in 18 years of Christian life. After reading some of the Puritan CDs I have to get the Reformation set if it kills me. A fire is burning within me. These... CDs are liable to start a revival fire unseen in any generation... the Gospel in its pure form is seen in these... CDs.

Sir, I cant say enough. What a treasure! I'll never be able to repay you this side of heaven, but when we get there I am sure you will see the rich fruits of your labor. God bless you for not being money hungry but wanting to see Christians grow in the Lord... I love you even though we have never met, you have helped me in my Christian walk tremendously with these... CDs.

I am not bragging on the flesh, I am just giving honor where honor is due. The Holy Ghost will take these CDs and light a fire unseen and unheard of. God bless you all at Still Waters."

- Email from the USA

"Thank you so very much for the CDs.

I am amazed at the quality and quantity of the literature...

I cannot imagine any other single thing being done by any man or group of men in the earth today that is of such extensive, present, and enduring value as this CD work is.

God be praised that he uses sickly and weak men to forward his kingdom, that the work may not be mistaken to be wrought by the might of men, but by his Spirit. His strength is perfected in weakness."

HALL, ARCHIBALD

Gospel Worship: Being An Attempt to Exhibit the Scriptural View of the Nature, Obligations, Manner, and Ordinances, of the Worship of God, In the New Testament (2 volumes, 1770)

Hall writes, "I am not ashamed to declare myself a warm conscientious friend of the reformation-system of doctrine, worship, discipline, and government, which is publicly professed in the church of Scotland, and delineated in the Confession of faith and Catechisms, in the Directory for the worship of God, and in the Form of Presbyterial church-government,--all composed by the Assembly convened at Westminster (1643-1647). But my attachment to this system arises, neither from the authority of that assembly, nor from a devoted regard to my connections, whom I honour and esteem in the Lord; but from the conviction, upon enquiry, that this system, for which our ancestors so nobly contended, is founded upon, and agreeable to the oracles of God" (preface. iv-v). Chapters cover: Reading the Scripture; Preaching; Hearing the Word Preached; Singing of Praises; Prayer; Public Blessing of the Congregation; the Sacraments in General; Baptism; the Lord's Supper; Observation of the Lord's Day; Times of Thanksgiving; Religious Fasts; Ministerial Visitations of the Flock; Ministerial Visitation of the Sick; Of Catechizing; Of Social Religious Meetings; Of Family Religion; Of Personal Religion; Of Liberality to the Poor; Of Swearing by the Name of God; Of Vowing to the Lord; Of Casting of Lots. Appendices cover: Love-feasts; the Holy Kiss; Washing the Disciples Feet; and Abstaining from Blood. 868 pages.

HALYBURTON, THOMAS

Memoirs of the Rev. Thomas Halyburton (1833)
"Halyburton's reputation rests chiefly on his Memoirs
(1714, often reprinted) which, like all his works, was published posthumously. Largely taken from his private papers, not intended for publication, the Memoirs is a spiritual autobiography, detailing his thoughts and struggles. It had wide influence throughout Scotland, England... and America" (David Lachman, in Cameron, ed., Dictionary of Scottish Church History and Theology, p. 388). This edition carries a recommendation by Samuel Miller and Charles Hodge in which they call it "one of the best specimens of religious biography extant" and commend it as "worthy of a place in every family." The preface to this edition is written by Archibald Alexander. 248 pages.

HALYBURTON, THOMAS

Natural Religion Insufficient, and Revealed Necessary, to Man's Happiness in His Present State: Or, A Rational Enquiry Into the Principles of the Modern Deists; Wherein is Largely Discovered Their Utter Insufficiency to Answer the Great Ends of Religion, and the Weakness of Their Pleadings For the Sufficiency of Nature's Light to Eternal Happiness: and Particularly the Writings of the Late Learned Lord Herbert, the Great Patron to Deism, to Wit, His Books de Veritate, de Religione Gentilium, and Religio Laici, in So Far As They Assert Nature's Light Able To Conduct Us To Future Blessedness, Are Considered, and Fully Answered. To Which is Added, An Essay Concerning the Nature of Faith; Or, The Ground Upon Which Faith Assents to the Scriptures: Wherein the Opinion of the Rationalists About It, Is Stated By the Learned Mr. Locke In His Book On Human Understanding (1798)

Halyburton's "Natural Religion Insufficient" was his magnum opus. Tempted by deism in his younger years, Halyburton wrote against the English Deists, particularly George Herbert. Long considered a standard work of apologetics, it went through a number of editions over the next hundred years. John Newton said he would not part with it 'for its weight in gold' and termed it 'a masterpiece'. He also highly commended the essay on faith which was printed along with it. Halyburton's doctrine as a whole is warmly evangelical; he expressly rejected the legalism of Richard Baxter, Daniel Williams and late seventeenth-century English Presbyterianism. His sermons were heart-searching and intensely practical," writes David Lachman (Cameron, ed., Dictionary of Scottish Church History and Theology, p. 388). 464 pages, indexed.

Africa's Agony: The Untold Story (Audio Documentary)

Faith Under Fire in Sudan (new edition)
"This is an updated and expanded version of the original Faith Under Fire in Sudan
. This book presents the inspiring story of the oldest community of Christians in Africa. Despite suffering some of the worst persecution in the world today many churches in Sudan are experiencing real revival and spectacular growth. This book will introduce you to some of the unforgettable heroes of Sudan and their legacy" (In Touch Mission). Islam, as widely reported, is one of the main forces persecuting Christians in Africa.

HAMMOND, PETER

Holocaust in Rwanda: The Roles of Gun Control, Media Manipulation, Liberal Church Leaders & the United Nations
"On 6 April 1994, one of the most dreadful campaigns of mass murder was unleashed upon the Tutsi people of Rwanda. In just 100 days more people had been slaughtered with machetes and clubs than had died from atomic weapons in all of history. The horrific massacres in homes, hospitals, churches, and on the streets have been widely reported. However, the reasons why this systematic slaughter was unleashed have received little coverage. Similarly, the events leading up to the intense and widespread violence seem little understood. Most importantly, the lessons we need to learn from the genocide in Rwanda need to clearly and repeatedly proclaimed throughout the world. In Holocaust in Rwanda
, missionary Peter Hammond deals with all these aspects. He also examines the disgraceful involvement of liberal church leaders, gun control, media manipulation, the French and US governments and the United Nations in the crisis" (In Touch Mission).

HAMMOND, PETER (Video Documentary)

Evangelizing in the War Zones (In the Frontline)

This 35 minute video is an astonishing and graphic account of the terrible oppression that Christians face in various African countries today (at the hands of Muslims, Communists and others). It also shows the sacrifices that must be made if Africa is to become a Christian continent. Furthermore, it explains what is presently being done to bring these nations to Christ and how you can help.

HAMMOND, PETER

In the Killing Fields of Mozambique (1998)
"'A Shocking Expose' -- During the dark days of oppression and civil war in the 1980's when Soviet-backed dictator Samora Machel had free reign to pursue his mad dream of turning Mozambique into 'the first truly Marxist country in Africa,' Christian missionary Peter Hammond ventured into the killing fields. As he traveled throughout Mozambique... preaching the Gospel and delivering relief aid to suffering Christians, he discovered a very systematic campaign of terror and persecution. The shocking, yet unreported true stories inside this book document the atrocities committed and shares inspiring testimonies of Christians who faced the cruelty and carnage, including the capture and prison experience of the author and his missionary team. The book concludes with the vital historic facts and important lessons that should be learned from the scorched earth campaign, manmade famine and abuse of relief aid caused by the communist forces" (In Touch Mission International).

HAMMOND, PETER (Audio Documentary)

Jihad & Slavery in Sudan:

Africa's Forgotten War

A stunning account, based on many eyewitness testimonies, of the ongoing and brutal Islamic persecution of Christians in Sudan. Also provides documentation of the thriving slave trade practiced by the Muslims (on Christians) in Africa. "Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body" (Heb. 13:3).

HAMMOND, PETER (Audio Documentary)

Persecution in Africa
How Communism, Witchcraft and Islam are responsible for the torture and murder of many Christians in Africa in our day. Also includes incredible instances of God's judgment against the persecutors, as well as examples of His deliverance of His people. Exposes much that the pagan news media will not touch -- because of their hatred of the truth and their overt antichristian bias. Sadly, this tape also shows how some of the governments run by the persecuting "authorities" are propped up by US tax dollars. This tape is not for the weak of heart. "And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it..." (1 Cor. 12:26).
(Cassette) $9.95 (US funds)

HAMMOND, PETER (Audio Documentary)

Revival Amidst Persecution in Sudan
Demonstrates how God continues to pour out His Spirit even in the midst of some of the worst persecution of Christians on the globe. A moving account (by a courageous and seasoned missionary) documenting the serious and severe situation faced by the church in Africa today -- as her battle with the three great antichristian forces on this continent (Islam, Communism, and Witchcraft) rages at a fevered pitch. Includes accounts of heroism and sacrifice by Christians which rival any of the faith-building accounts of the martyrs of centuries gone by.
(Cassette) $9.95 (US funds)

HAMMOND, PETER (Video Documentary)

Sudan: The Hidden Holocaust

Recent Islamic atrocities (in the name of Allah) against African Christians exposed. Provides documentation of the torture, rape and killing (even of children) of those who will not become Muslims. Provides a clear picture about what the Koran really teaches and what Jihad ("holy war") really means. Also shows how the United Nations is duped by the Muslims and blocks food, medical supplies and Bibles from reaching Sudanese Christians. Tells how Frontline Fellowship (P.O. Box 74, Newlands, 7725 Cape Town, South Africa or http://www.frontline.org.za/ ) is overcoming these obstacles to minister to those under oppression in Sudan. HAMMOND, PETER, and CARYL MATRISCIANA

Terrorism and Persecution: Understanding Islamic Jihad (Video Documentary, 2002)

Starting with the shocking and most incredible footage on the September 11th terrorist attacks on America, the video courageously exposes the ideology and issues behind the attacks. It also takes you to the colossal conflict in Southern Sudan and the Nuba Mountains showing how Christians there have resiliently been resisting Islamic Jihad for decades.

The Muslim controlled government in Sudan is systematically bombing their own Christian churches and schools as part of a statewide effort to convert all of its citizens to Islam. But why?

* Does the religion of Islam actually encourage terrorism?

* What do the Qu'ran and Hadith, (Islam's authoritative books) teach about violence?

* Were the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon the result of Islamic Jihad (holy war) or simply the work of a few deranged extremists?

* What results can be expected from the war on terrorism?

* Why are Jews, Christians, and Americans being targeted?

* Can there ever be peace in the middle east?

* Do the activities of the United Nations actually encourage terrorism?

* Will the pursuit of global peace and safety lead to the demise of freedom?

Join author and world religion expert Caryl Matrisciana and Frontline Fellowship Director Dr. Peter Hammond for this in-depth report from the frontlines. Must viewing for all concerned with the future of freedom.

Running Time: 55 minutes (back cover of video sleeve).

I Kissed Dating Goodbye: A New Attitude Toward Romance and Relationships (1997)

"Tired of the game? Kiss dating goodbye. Dating. Isn't there a better way? I Kissed Dating Goodbye suggests there is. Reorder your romantic life in the light of God's Word and find more fulfillment than a date could ever give -- a life of sincere love, true purity and purposeful singleness" (back cover). "I don't think that I've ever read a book in which the author is more honest and real than Josh is in this one. He tackles the hard issues, the tough questions on this confusing topic of 'to date or not to date.' And he gives practical answers. Joshua Harris has a powerful way of sharing from his experience. And since he is our age (just out of the teen years himself), he knows what he's talking about. One of the things that I like the most about Josh's writing is that he brings it all back to the Bible and how we can really live what it says. And after knowing him for the last couple of years, I can truly says that he 'walks his talk'" (Rebecca St. James, from the Foreword).

HARRIS, THOMAS H.

Rome's Responsibility for the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln (1897)

General Harris was "a member of the 'Military Commission' that tried and condemned the conspirators" and thus "he had unusual opportunities for accurate knowledge concerning Rome's responsibility for... the assassination of Abraham Lincoln" (Pref. Note). The General writes,

The Jesuit plans with the utmost art and cunning, unhampered by any moral restraints, and always with the utmost secrecy; and carries out his plans in the dark. We think, however, that in this case, we have succeeded in tracing him through all the devious wanderings of his dark and slimy path, and, in fixing upon him the responsibility for the assassination of President Lincoln (p. 21).

Though not a Covenanter book, and thus defective in some obvious areas, this title contains much useful information which exposes the Romish harlot. 40 pages.

HAY FLEMING, DAVID

Illustrations of Antichrist's Rejoicing over the Massacre of St. Bartholomew (1912)
This booklet contains accounts of Papal rejoicings (translated into English) over the savage butchery and mass murder of Huguenots (French Protestants) in Paris -- and beyond -- during what is know as the St. Bartholomew's day massacre. It is estimated that over 30,000 Huguenots were slain in France during a six week period in 1572 . Baird, in his Rise of the Huguenots
(volume two) notes that "on the plea of religious zeal the most barbarous acts were committed... The weaker sex was not spared in the universal carnage, and, as in a town taken by assault, suffered outrages that were worse than death. Matron and maiden alike welcomed as merciful the blow that liberated them from an existence now rendered insupportable. Women approaching maternity were selected for more excruciating torments, and savage delight was exhibited in destroying the unborn fruit of the womb... the very innocence of childhood furnished no sufficient protection -- so literally did the pious Catholics of Paris interpret the oft-repeated exhortations of their holy father (Pope Saint Pius V) to exterminate not only the roots of heresy, but the very fibres of the roots." Such is the face of the man of sin when he wields power and lets down his mask of false piety and toleration -- and many nations still wonder after this beast to our very day. 32 pages.

HAY FLEMING, DAVID

The Reformation in Scotland: Causes Characteristics, Consequences
Hay Fleming, in his preface to these lectures, notes that "questions are discussed with considerable fulness, which have been either ignored or superficially dealt with in previous works on the Scottish Reformation. Some of these questions are of great importance... Throughout the lectures and the notes a number of hitherto unprinted documents have been used and of such the Appendices largely consist." These were the Stone Lectures at Princeton Theological Seminary from 1907-1908. Meticulously detailed, as is common to Hay Fleming works, this is a valuable resource to add to any Calvinistic library. 675 pages and indexed.

HAY FLEMING, DAVID (editor)

Register of the Minister Elders and Deacons of the Christian Congregation of St. Andrews: Comprising the Proceedings of the Kirk Session and of the Court of the Superintendent of Fife Fothrik and Strathearn. 1559-1600. Transcribed and Edited from the Original Manuscript with Preface and Notes by David Hay Fleming. (Vol. 1, 1889; Vol. 2, 1890)

This two-volume set is the written record of the ecclesiastical court proceedings that took place in St. Andrews, Scotland from 1559-1660. David Hay Fleming, a notable and godly Scottish scholar, saw the importance of making this material available for a wider audience. And as he notes in the preface, "among the surviving Registers of Kirk Sessions that of which the first part is now printed is entitled to a prominent place, because of the early period it covers and the district with which it is connected" (p. iv). Thus this was a particularly important court in the Church of Scotland resulting from the First Reformation, and the men that comprised the court were wise undershepherds. "The proceedings are pervaded by a spirit of strict impartiality, the decisions in difficult cases were evidently prompted by sincerity, and a remarkable shrewdness is frequently observable in the receiving of suspicious evidence" (p. x). David Hay Fleming notes that some judgements would appear harsh by contemporary standards, but it would not be correct to see this court as harsh. "Although determined to put down sin, tenderness was often shown for the feelings of the transgressor, and a manifest reluctance to proceed to extremities is not rarely revealed" (p. x).

Not only is this material relevant for today because the decisions of this lawful ecclesiastical judicatory continue as the historical testimony of the true church, but the issues dealt with are still common in our time. David Hay Fleming points this out: "The faults and failings with which the session had to deal were of many kinds, but the sin of fornication outnumbered them all. Strenuous and unremitting efforts were put forth to suppress this vice in all its forms. . . . Death was regarded as the due desert of adultery and incest. Church-courts had no power to inflict such a penalty, but the discipline which penitents of this class had to undergo, ere they were again received into the bosom of the Church, was very severe" (p. xlv).

Romanism was, of course, forbidden, but some Romish practices continued to manifest themselves among the people, such as the celebration of Christmas. As David Hay Fleming puts it, "although there were so few professed Papists left in St. Andrews, the Session found that the old customs were not easily eradicated. Some parishioners could hardly be prevented from observing Yule. . . . Four men came under an obligation to the Session that in future they would not keep Yule nor any other superstitious day holy" (pp. lxiii-lxiv).

It is important to note that the spellings of many words in the Register are very different from contemporary usage. However, the print is clear and easy to read.

This two-volume set is a vital source of information for church officers, those aspiring for church office, and even any Christian who would like to see how a faithful, Bible-believing, God-fearing church, handles discipline cases, and other church matters, Scripturally and properly. This set contains the serious business of a real church, the Covenanted Church of Scotland, where people couldn't just walk away from their scandalous sin, and attend another church nearby, like commonly happens today.

Volume 1: 1559-1582 (558 pages), volume 2: 1582-1600 (580 pages).

The Scottish Reformation
"In preparing this little handbook I have tried, above all things," states the author, "to be clear, brief, fair, and accurate. HAYWARD, S. and S. PIKE

Religious Cases of Conscience Answered in an Evangelical Manner... to Which is Added The Spiritual Companion; or, the Professing Christian Tried at the Bar of God's Word; and Character of the Happy Man (1866)
Answers 31 questions and deals with 30 cases of conscience. Written to "remove the doubts of the timorous Christian, quicken him on his way to Zion, to guard against presumptuous hopes, and promote the life of religion in the soul... to destroy the vain confidence of a sinner, without disturbing the peace, and discouraging the minds of those who are the real followers of Jesus." Questions dealt with include: "How shall we distinguish between the workings of natural affection and real exercise of grace in religious duties?"; "What is faith? How does it differ from hope, love, repentance, etc.?"; "How may times of family and closet duty be best regulated to the glory of God, our own comfort, and the advantage of those about us?"; and "How may a Christian know that he grows in grace?". More controversial questions are also dealt with, such as: "How may we distinguish betwixt that which is moral, and that which is typical, or merely ceremonial, in the books of Moses? And consequently, which of these precepts are still in force, and which are those long since abrogated?" and "A serious person who scruples to comply with the usual practice of playing at cards, desires to know whether these scruples arise from a needless tenderness of conscience, or from the faithful monitions of the Spirit of God?" A real feast of practical and doctrinal Calvinistic counsel. Makes a great gift for introducing friends and relatives to some easily digestible, nicely portioned pieces of theological meat. 444 pages.

HELM, PAUL

Calvin and the Calvinists (1982, 1998)
"Recently it has come more and more to be believed that Puritan theology departed significantly from, and even opposed, the theology of John Calvin. This study rejects such a view.... My aim is to show that Calvin and the Puritans were, theologically speaking, at one, and thus to support the truism that Calvin was a Calvinist," writes Helm in the Preface. This book deals with the meaning of the death of Christ, faith and assurance, the intercession of Christ, the will in conversion, preparation for grace, the preaching of the law and much more.

HENDERSON, ALEXANDER and DAVID DICKSON versus SIX ANTI-COVENANTING ABERDEEN DOCTORS

The Answers of Some Brethren of the Ministrie to the Replies of the Ministers and Professours of Divinitie in Aberdene, Concerning the Late (National--RB) Covenant (1638)
"The National Covenant, first signed in Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh on 28th March 1638, proved remarkably popular throughout Scotland and only in Aberdeen was there organized opposition to it. This opposition was regarded so seriously by the Covenanters that a strong deputation, headed by the Earl (later Marquis) of Montrose and including Alexander Henderson, was sent north and arrived in Aberdeen on 20 July... The ministers of Aberdeen refused to allow the Covenanters to preach from their pulpits, but the balcony of the Earl Marischal's house in the Castlegate served as an open-air pulpit and some signatures were obtained for the Covenant. There is no evidence that the Aberdeen Doctors and the Covenanting leaders ever actually met, but a brisk controversy was conducted in print. To the Doctors Generall Demands Concerning the Late Covenant
(A, 1638) the Covenanters issued Answers (A, 1638). The Doctors sent replies which were also answered. Finally the Doctors issued elaborate Duplyes" (Sefton in Cameron, ed., Dictionary of Scottish Church History & Theology, pp. 1-2). Though printed by "His Majesties Printer for Scotland Anno Dom. 1638," the answers given Henderson and Dickson contain much of value. We have also included the "General Demands Concerning the Late Covenant, 1638," and the Covenanters first answers, which started this controversy. Andrew Cant joined Henderson and Dickson in the first set of replies contained in this section. The whole written controversy, made up of five articles (two by the Covenanters and three by the anti-Covenanters), is contained in this book. It is also interesting to note how some of the same old evasive arguments -- with some modern twists by those adverse to lawful covenanting and covenants -- are continually being revived, even among "Presbyterians" in our day. This makes this book pertinent to the contemporary reader that does not want to repeat the mistakes of the past. 215 pages.

HENDERSON, ALEXANDER

The Government and Order of the Church of Scotland (1641)
Henderson was the one of the acknowledged "heavy hitters" of the second reformation. He dealt often with both national civil governments and national church governments. Here he lays out "the form of Government and order of worship used in the Church of Scotland." This is the government and worship which both England and Ireland, as nations and as churches, were soon to bind themselves -- in covenant with King Jesus - - to preserve and uphold (cf. Head I of the Solemn League and Covenant). This was also Henderson's call to those timid souls still entangled in the tentacles of the Prelatical beast, to remove themselves from this weak and incomplete reform from popery. Henderson's citations of translations from portions of Beza's earlier letters to the Scot's, encouraging his brother Reformers to maintain their national Presbyterian establishment, are also very interesting and enlightening -- as these letters form a natural historical bridge between first Reformation attainments and the second Reformation (which Henderson was about to shift into overdrive with his work -- all by God's matchless grace and mercy, of course -- in bringing three nations to the feet of Christ, through means of God's ordinance of covenanting, in the Solemn League and Covenant). The mutually beneficial positions given by God to both church and state, for the purpose of Reformation, are also discussed. Moreover, these discussions are more than mere historical curiosities, as these men had, and further intended to place the nations they were dealing with (indeed the whole world) under the Kingship of Christ.
We have much to learn from their faithfulness, and writings such as these are a good place to start. 68 pages.

HENDERSON, ALEXANDER

Obedience is Better than Sacrifice ($2.98, cassette)
Read by Elder Lyndon Dohms from the book Sermons, Prayers and Pulpit Addresses
. Henderson was one of the Scottish commissioners to the Westminster Assembly and the principal architect of the Solemn League and Covenant. Some consider him as only second to Knox in regard to his work as a Scottish Reformer. This sermon, on Psalm 40:6-8, was preached in Scotland just before Henderson left for the Westminster Assembly and exhorts Christians to zealousness -- especially in days of great declension.

HENDERSON, ALEXANDER

The National (1638) and Solemn League and Covenant (1643)
The National Covenant, a Scottish Presbyterian document, primarily composed by Alexander Henderson and Archibald Johnstone of Wariston. It was composed in opposition to the "policies of Charles I. Written in the context of the riots resulting from the imposition of 'Laud's Liturgy' in 1637 and the King's refusal to receive the petitions of supplicants for redress, the National Covenant was an appeal... to defend the true Reformed religion, and to decline the recent innovations in worship decreed by the King." (Dictionary of Scottish Church History, 620). Furthermore, it was "an assertion by the Kirk of freedom from royal or state control, a personal oath of allegiance to Jesus Christ, the only Head of the Church, the King of kings, and a dedication of life to him. It stemmed directly from God's covenant of grace, was in the succession of those earlier bonds the Scots had made with God for his people's defence and deliverance, and represented a call in the Pauline sense to 'conduct themselves a citizens.'" (Idem.) This covenant (and the Solemn League and Covenant described below) are still binding on all true Presbyterians and the hearty and steadfast renewal of these faithful documents would constitute a mighty means toward modern reformation, seeing that much of the contemporary church and all modern states have set themselves "against the Lord, and against his anointed" (Ps. 2:2); excepting, maybe, the African state of Zambia, which seems to be presently reforming, but not yet covenanted to the Lord. The Solemn League and Covenant was first of all a religious covenant and secondly a civil league. "After noting that they had one king and one Reformed religion and expressing their concern about the estate of both the Church and kingdom of England and Scotland, the signatories swear to preserve 'the Reformed Religion in the Church of Scotland' and the Reformation of religion in England and to bring the churches to the 'nearest Conjunction and Uniformity in Religion', confession, government, and worship. They also bound themselves to extirpate popery and prelacy as well as superstition, heresy and whatever is contrary to sound doctrine... to bring to trial all who hinder such reformation of religion or divide the king from his people and to continue such 'to all Posterity" and not suffer themselves to be withdrawn from 'this blessed Union and Conjunction" (Ibid, pp. 786-789). This covenant gave teeth to the work of the Westminster Assembly and united three nations under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. It was publicly taken by the Westminster Divines and the English parliament on September 25th. "On the 9th of October the king issued a proclamation from Oxford, denouncing this document as 'in truth nothing else but a traitorous and seditious combination against us and the established religion of this kingdom;' straitly charging and commanding all his loving subjects, upon their allegiance, 'that they presume not to take the said seditious and traitorous Covenant.' And at last an order was issued by the Parliament, in March 1644, commanding the Covenant to be taken throughout the kingdom of England by all persons above the age of 18 years; which order was accompanied by an exhortation prepared by the Assembly of Divines. In Scotland, as soon as information was received of what had taken place in London, the Committee of Estates ordered the Covenant to be subscribed by all ranks and conditions of people, on penalty of the confiscation of property, or such other punishment as his Majesty and the parliament might resolve to inflict" (Hetherington, History of the Westminster Assembly ($8.99), pp. 127-128). Furthermore, Hetherington goes on to call this bond "the wisest, the sublimest, and the most sacred document ever framed by uninspired men" (p. 134). If you want to understand Presbyterianism these two covenant documents offer as much light as any others we know of. They are inextricably linked to the Westminster standards, historical testimony and the covenanted reformation. Some still believe that they will once again be renewed on an international basis near the beginning of the millennium, in preparation for the days when the "earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea" (Isa. 11:9). With this sentiment we wholeheartedly concur!

HENDERSON, ALEXANDER and CHARLES I, KING OF GREAT BRITAIN

The Papers Which passed at New-Castle Betwixt His Sacred Majesty and Mr. Alexander Henderson: Concerning the Change of Church Government (1649)
Johnston writes, "In 1646 Charles sought shelter within the Scotch lines. Negotiations for bringing the war to a close were entered into. He was asked by the Covenanters to abolish Episcopacy. This, he said, he could not in conscience do, but he was open to conviction. Whereupon Alexander Henderson entered the lists with him as the champion of Presbytery" (Treasury of the Scottish Covenant
, p. 301). These were the days when matters of church government were national and international issues, debated and fought over in shooting wars throughout some of the major nations. This is a classic specimen of the importance that men of this era placed on the truth of the Scriptures -- even in matters, such as church government, which "our modern pigmies" of theology have little or no time for. 58 pages.

HENDERSON, ALEXANDER

Reformation of Church Government in Scotland, Cleared from Some Mistakes and Prejudices (1644)
Henderson was the statesman and an acknowledged leader among the Scottish Presbyterians at the Westminster Assembly. This work was written on behalf of the Scottish commissioners attending the Assembly, while they were in London in 1644. Masson called Henderson "the greatest, the wisest, and the most liberal of the Scottish Presbyterians -- the greatest man in the Church after Knox" (cited in Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant
, p. 298). The Evan. Succ. magazine wrote, "It is due to him more than to any other man that Scotland since his day has been Presbyterian and not Prelatic, that the Westminster divines, and not Archbishop Laud, have given us our theology and our Church order" (Ibid.). When you read Henderson, especially on Church government, you are tasting of the works of a man that "became a prince in the Scottish Israel of his day, and the hero of the Covenanted Second Reformation" (Ibid.). 26 pages.

A faithful ministry and faithful parents, who catechise their children daily, will do more for true Reformation and godliness than just about any other means to this end. Here Henry also adds simple questions to each question of the Westminster Shorter Catechism to help explain it to beginners. Very practical!

HENRY, MATTHEW

A Church in the House: A Sermon Concerning Family Religion (London, 1704)

Family worship is presently one of the most powerful weapons in a Christian parent's arsenal of truth. Read this Puritan sermon and see why!

In time past, when the churches saw the family as "little churches" within the church, elders saw to it that family worship was practiced daily and that offenders against this Godly order were censured. Daily family worship is a monumental blessing on the one hand and a serious sin of omission, when not practiced, on the other.

Though Kevin Reed was speaking of public worship in the following quotation, the directive can easily be applied to family worship also. Reed notes,

[h]eads of households "you husbands and fathers -- it is incumbent on you to lead your family in the narrow path which leads to life. Compromise in worship is a form of apostasy, which teaches children that we love family approval more than obedience to Christ... You have no right to set aside biblical principles of worship" (John Knox the Forgotten Reformer, available only of the PHP CD listed under "REED, KEVIN" at http://www.swrb.com/catalog/r.htm, p. 99).

Furthermore, Ptacek has written that,

[t]he role of the head of the family was given the highest possible status by Matthew Henry. In a 1704 sermon on family religion, Henry followed Cawdrey in arguing that the head of the family holds all of the offices of Christ with respect to his household: prophet, priest and king. Henry's design for family religion is based on the exercise of these three offices. As a prophet the head of the family teaches doctrine through the reading of Scripture and catechizing. The head's priestly office is expressed in praying for his family. His exercise of discipline reflects the office of king, both in encouraging godly behaviour and discouraging sinful practices. Although Matthew Henry was the best known Puritan preacher of his time, he asserted without fear of controversy that his view of the role of the head of the family was one in which "all agree'" (Family Worship, pp. 52-53, http://www.swrb.com/catalog/r.htm).

For parents, and especially fathers, this may be one of the most important works you will ever read. When family worship is practised faithfully (and the responsibility for this rests with the head of the house primarily, and the elders of the church secondarily -- through encouragement, help and discipline of the unfaithful), nations and generations to come will be greatly influenced to bow humbly before the Lord Jesus Christ and serve Him alone!

HENRY, MATTHEW

Popery, A Spiritual Tyranny
In denouncing a particular Jesuit (the duke of York), the Act, Declaration and Testimony... by the Reformed Presbytery (1876 ed.), gives an representative statement of Rome's intent and hellish zeal. It reads, "to promote their grand design of utterly extinguishing the light of the gospel, and bringing in antichrist, with all his poisonous and hellish vermin, and abominable idolatries, and that, with all the murdering violence, diabolical subtlety and malignant rage that hell and Rome could invent and exert. He had formerly published a proclamation..., granting a lawless liberty to several sorts of persons therein specified, called his first indulgence; but breathing nothing but threatenings and slaughter against the people of God." Here Henry further exposes Rome's "haughtiness and insolence," as the "proud oppressors of God's church."

A Serious Address to those that Profane the Lord's Day

If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it" (Isa. 58:12-14).

An Ungoverned Tongue
"The criminal we are now dealing with," states Henry, "is pronounced by an inspired writer, 'an unruly evil, full of deadly poison' (James 3:8)." This book deals with the reformation of the tongue, in an intensely practical way. The appendix includes Baxter's "Special Directions Against Idle Talk, and Babbling." Comports with strong warning of Scripture, when it classes sins of the tongue among other soul-destroying maladies. "But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them" (Eph. 5:3-7, emphasis added).

HERKLESS, JOHN

Richard Cameron

Part of the famous Scots series, this book (of 152 pages) chronicles the life of the Presbyterian Pastor know as the "Lion of the Covenant." Cameron rejected his early Episcopalian persuasion, subsequent to hearing "the persecuted Gospel in the fields," and after "the wonderful working of the Lord by His powerful Spirit upon him" revealing "a lively discovery of the sin and hazard of Prelacy," he joined with ranks of the persecuted Covenanters, notes Howie (in Scots Worthies).

He set an uncompromising standard for the gospel and against the enemies of Christ, for which he was hunted and ultimately martyred. In mockery of his testimony, the wicked took his head and hands and fixed them upon the Netherbow Port, with the fingers upward.

One of his and Christ's declared enemies, when he looked at his head at Edinburgh, gave him this testimony, saying, 'There's the head and hands of a man who lived praying and preaching, and died praying and fighting.' And wherever the faithful contendings of the Covenanted Church of Scotland are made mention of, this, to his hounour, shall be recorded of him (Howie, Scots Worthies).

Herkless also states that,

[i]t is of noteworthy significance... that for over two hundred years Cameron's name has been associated with a set of men marked by the strictest adherence to Calvinism, and by a genuine, even though severe, profession of piety. It was a remarkable testimony to their religious earnestness when Norman Macleod, referring to the parish of Loudoun, wrote: 'I am eagerly desirous to get family worship established -- of that there seems not to be a vestige, except among the Cameronians, and there every family has it.' In this testimony stands the name of Cameron, who, by the genuineness of his religion, his uncompromising devotion to principle, and the greatness of his cause, touched the nation and fixed himself in its memory.

Cameron was ordained at the hands of the exiled Robert MacWard and John Brown (of Wamphray), while in Holland.

He and a group of supporters issued the Sanquhar Declaration, renouncing the authority of Charles II, and declaring war upon him as a tyrant and usurper. For this he was declared a traitor, and had a heavy price put on his head" (Cameron, ed. Dictionary of Scottish Church History, p. 124).

HETHERINGTON, WILLIAM

History of the Westminster Assembly of Divines (1856)

This book is one of the best easy reading historical accounts published concerning this unsurpassed Assembly. Hetherington's purpose for writing this book is stated in the preface as follows:

In common with all true Presbyterians, I have often regretted the want of a History of the Westminster Assembly of Divines... Especially in such a time as the present, when all distinctive Presbyterian principles are not only called in question, but also misrepresented and condemned, such a want has become absolutely unendurable, unless Presbyterians are willing to permit their Church to perish under a load of unanswered, yet easily refuted, calumny. And as the best refutation of calumny is the plain and direct statement of truth, it is by that process that I have endeavored to vindicate the principles and the character of the Presbyterian Church (p. i.).

The Puritan history leading up to the Assembly (which this book takes a in-depth look at) is especially important and not only set the context for what became the major debates among the ministers present, but even dictated who was selected to this august body of scholars. Civil wars, national upheavals, emigration to the "new world" and a host of other epoch making events surrounded this momentous period of history. These debates and their resolutions have defined and directed Christian thought and national cultures ever since their original ratification -- and Hetherington is not shy about noting the significance of this Assembly when he writes,

But the man who penetrates a little deeper into the nature of those unrevealed but powerful influences which move a nation's mind, and mould its destinies, will be ready to direct his attention more profoundly to the objects and deliberations of an assembly which met at a moment so critical, and was composed of the great master-minds of the age; and the theologian who has learned to view religion as the vital principle of human nature, equally in nations and in the individual man, will not easily admit the weak idea, that such an assembly could have been an isolated event, but will be disposed earnestly to inquire what led to its meeting, and what important consequences followed. And although the subject has not hitherto been investigated with such a view, it may, we trust, be possible to prove, that it (the Westminster Assembly--RB) was the most important event in the century in which it occurred; and that it has exerted, and in all probability will yet exert, a far more wide and permanent influence upon both the civil and the religious history of mankind than has generally been even imagined (p. 17).

Hetherington covers the period from 1531 to 1662. Many consider this era a historical high water mark for doctrinal and practical Puritan precision. Also included is a chapter on the theological productions of the Westminster Assembly and six valuable appendices (one containing six biographical notices of the Scottish Commissioners including Rutherford, Gillespie, Henderson and Baillie).

This work is indispensable for understanding the work accomplished by the Westminster Assembly, Presbyterian and Independent history, Oliver Cromwell and much more. For example, consider the lofty and Christ honoring goal of the Assembly as summarized by Hetherington:

There was one great, and even sublime idea, brought somewhat indefinitely before the Westminster Assembly, which has not yet been realized, the idea of a Protestant union throughout Christendom, not merely for the purpose of counterbalancing Popery, but in order to purify, strengthen, and unite all true Christian churches, so that with combined energy and zeal they might go forth, in glad compliance with the Redeemer's commands, teaching all nations, and preaching the everlasting gospel to every creature under heaven. This truly magnificent, and also truly Christian idea, seems to have originated in the mind of that distinguished man, Alexander Henderson. It was suggested by him to the Scottish commissioners, and by them partially brought before the English Parliament, requesting them to direct the Assembly to write letters to the Protestant Churches in France, Holland, Switzerland, and other Reformed Churches. . . . and along with these letters were sent copies of the Solemn League and Covenant, a document which might itself form the basis of such a Protestant union. The deep thinking divines of the Netherlands apprehended the idea, and in their answer, not only expressed their approbation of the Covenant, but also desired to join in it with the British kingdoms. Nor did they content themselves with the mere expression of approval and willingness to join. A letter was soon afterwards sent to the Assembly from the Hague, written by Duraeus (the celebrated John Dury), offering to come to the Assembly, and containing a copy of a vow which he had prepared and tendered to the distinguished Oxenstiern, chancellor of Sweden, wherein he bound himself 'to prosecute a reconciliation between Protestants in point of religion'. . . . [O]n one occasion Henderson procured a passport to go to Holland, most probably for the purpose of prosecuting this grand idea. But the intrigues of politicians, the delays caused by the conduct of the Independents, and the narrow-minded Erastianism of the English Parliament, all conspired to prevent the Assembly from entering farther into that truly glorious Christian enterprise. Days of trouble and darkness came; persecution wore out the great men of that remarkable period; pure and vital Christianity was stricken to the earth and trampled under foot. (pp. 337-339).

Further demonstrating his grasp of the most important events of the second Reformation, Hetherington comments on the Solemn League (the epitome of second Reformation attainments),

no man who is able to understand its nature, and to feel and appreciate its spirit and its aim, will deny it to be the wisest, the sublimest, and the most sacred document ever framed by uninspired men (p. 134).

Anyone interested in the work of the Westminster Assembly -- and the men, teaching and events which were at the heart of the Puritan revolution against the forces of antichrist -- should read this book at least once. Third edition, 413 pages.

HETHERINGTON, WILLIAM H.

The Independent Controversy, the Westminster Assembly and Oliver Cromwell
Though Cromwell has been lauded by many in our day, faithful lovers of truth in his day rejected him and the attendant errors of his Independent abettors. Concerning Cromwell and company, the Act, Declaration and Testimony... by the Reformed Presbytery (1876 ed.) witnesses to the truth that Presbyterians, "both refused subjection unto, and testified against the usurpation of Oliver Cromwell and his accomplices (the Independents, RB), his invading the land," and "his anti-christian toleration of all sectarian errors and heresies," which were at that time "threatening the ruin and destruction of the true religion, as well as liberty." Cromwell's so-called "tolerance" extended to the execution of one Presbyterian minister and the persecution of others. He played an instrumental part in scuttling the Christ honoring covenanted uniformity of the Reformed religion that was being fought for in the period covered by this book. The debates, especially between the Independents and the Presbyterians, in this eventful period, are still with us today and have changed very little, if at all. This is a good place to examine the historical context and the theological argumentation that is foundational to these two antagonistic systems.

HEWISON, JAMES KING

The Covenanters: A History of the Church in Scotland from the Reformation to the Revolution (1908, 2 vol.)

Smellie, in his preface to Men of the Covenant, calls this set a "great treatise on the Covenanters -- a treatise which covers the entire field and seems to leave no word unsaid." Hewison states that he desired to produce "[a]n absolutely impartial account of the Covenanters." He also notes that "certain definite conclusions regarding the Covenanters, as a rigid sect in the Christian Church, and as a restless, rebellious political party in the 16th and 17th centuries, have been arrived at by many students; and, as a general rule, a far from favourable estimate of these brave and defensible patriots has been based upon generalizations which will not bear investigation." Moreover, he recognizes the Covenanters for who they were: "one of the most extraordinary orders of devotees which the civilized world ever saw." The work is enhanced by photographic reproductions of portraits, pictures, and Covenants. Considered by some as the definitive work on the Covenanters (over 1100 pages). If you are going to study church history after the Apostles, no other group or time period offers as much edifying material. This set is sure to put a fiery zeal in the soul of all those who love the Lord Jesus Christ. Great price too!

HILLERBRAND, HANS J., ed.

The Oxford Encyclopaedia of the Reformation (4 volumes, 1996)
The preface notes, "The Oxford Encyclopaedia of the Reformation seeks to do justice to the whole range of events and happenings of the sixteenth century. It uses the broadest possible definition of the Reformation in order to depict not only religious life but also the related societal phenomena that in one way or another had bearing on religion... the roster of contributors encompasses scholars not only from the United States and Canada but the United Kingdom, Norway, Hungary, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, Finland, Poland, and Australia, to mention but a few nations at random. If nothing else, the encyclopaedia represents the creative international guild of Reformation scholars." The preface also notes that "for far too long, many interesting and important personalities of the sixteenth century, because they were not major reformers, theologians, or rulers, have fallen into scholarly obscurity... One of our major intentions was to shed new light on these fascinating figures." This set includes four beautifully bound, oversized hardcover volumes. Each volume contains about 500 double column pages. The final volume includes a massive index and maps.

HILLS, EDWARD

The King James Version Defended (1956, 1988)

"Edward F. Hills in his work The King James Version Defended represents a sober and compelling argument for the 'old tradition.' As a well trained classicist and an internationally recognized New Testament text critic, he analyses the problems of both modern language translations and current New Testament text criticism methodology. With the sometimes widespread and uncritical acceptance of such translations as the New International Version by pastors as well as laymen, this defense of the historic, English Protestant Bible should be read by all who share an interest in these areas" (back cover). 280 pages, indexed.

HISLOP, ALEXANDER

The Two Babylons or the Papal Worship Proved to Be the Worship of Nimrod and His Wife (1916)

Contrasts the distinctive characteristics of the truth with the lies and idolatry of the Roman antichrist. Chapters cover the "Objects of Worship," "Festivals," "Doctrine and Discipline," "Rites and Ceremonies," "Religious Orders," and the development of the two systems considered "Historically and Prophetically." The prophetic section is especially interesting and shows how far Protestants have moved into Rome's camp concerning eschatology. The whole book, in fact, shows in a most explicit manner how much Romanism has infected the modern Protestant churches and their thinking. And as Hislop notes,

it has been known all along that Popery was baptised Paganism; but God is now making it manifest, that the Paganism which Rome has baptised is, in all its essential elements, the very Paganism which prevailed in the ancient literal Babylon, when Jehovah opened before Cyrus the two-leaved gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron."

HODGE, CHARLES

Systematic Theology (3 volumes)

"Charles Hodge (1878) was the principal of Princeton Theological Seminary between 1851 and 1878. He was one of the greatest exponents and defenders of historical Calvinism in America during the 19th century.... Dr. Hodge was a voluminous writer, and from the beginning to the end of his theological career his pen was never idle.... His magnum opus is the Systematic Theology (1871-1873), of 3 volumes and extending to 2,260 pages.... it must be remembered that 3,000 ministers of the Gospel passed under his instruction, and that to him was accorded the rare privilege, during the course of a long life, of achieving distinction as a teacher, exegete, preacher, controversialist, ecclesiastic, and systematic theologian.... He was conservative by nature, and his life was spent in defending the Reformed theology as set forth in the Westminster Confession of Faith and Larger and Westminster Shorter Catechisms. He was fond of saying that Princeton had never originated a new idea; but this meant no more than that Princeton was the advocate of historical Calvinism in opposition to the modified and provincial Calvinism of a later day. And it is true that Dr. Hodge must be classed among the great defenders of the faith, rather than among the great constructive minds of the Church. He had no ambition to be epoch-making by marking the era of a new departure. But he earned a higher title to fame in that he was the champion of his Church's faith during a long and active life, her trusted leader in time of trial, and for more than half a century the most conspicuous teacher of her ministry. The garnered wisdom of his life is given in his Systematic Theology, the greatest system of dogmatics in our language."

Here is a sample of Hodge's writing,

"It may be naturally asked, why not take the truths as God has seen fit to reveal them, and thus save ourselves the trouble of showing their relation and harmony?

The answer to this question is, in the first place, that it cannot be done. Such is the constitution of the human mind that it cannot help endeavouring to systematize and reconcile the facts which it admits to be true. In no department of knowledge have men been satisfied with the possession of a mass of undigested facts. And the students of the Bible can as little be expected to be thus satisfied. There is a necessity, therefore, for the construction of systems of theology. Of this the history of the Church affords abundant proof. In all ages and among all denominations, such systems have been produced.

Second, a much higher kind of knowledge is thus obtained, than by the mere accumulation of isolated facts. It is one thing, for example, to know that oceans, continents, islands, mountains, and rivers exist on the face of the earth; but it is a much higherthing to know the causes which have determined the distribution of the land and water on the surface of the globe; the configuration of the earth; the effects of that configuration upon climate, on the races of plants and animals, on commerce, civilization, and the destiny of nations. It is by determining these causes that geography has been raised from a collection of facts to a highly important and elevated science. What is true of other sciences is true of theology. We cannot know what God has revealed in his Word unless we understand, at least in some good measure, the relation in which the separate truths therein contained stand to each other. It cost the Church centuries of study and controversy to solve the problem concerning the person of Christ; that is, to adjust and bring into harmonious arrangement all the facts which the Bible teaches on that subject.

Third, We have no choice in the matter. If we would discharge our duty as teachers and defenders of the truth, we must endeavour to bring all the facts of revelation into systematic order and mutual relation. It is only thus that we can satisfactorily exhibit their truth, vindicate them from objections, or bring them to bear in their full force on the mind of men.

Fourth, Such is evidently the will of God. He does not teach men astronomy or chemistry, but He gives them the facts out of which those sciences are constructed. Neither does He teach us systematic theology, but He gives us in the Bible the truths which, properly understood and arranged, constitute the science of theology. As the facts of nature are all related and determined by physical laws, so the facts of the Bible are all related and determined by the nature of God and of his creatures. And as He wills that men and women should study his works and discover their wonderful organic relation and harmonious combination, so it is his will that we should study his Word, and learn that, like the stars, its truths are not isolated points, but systems, cycles, and epicycles, in unending harmony and grandeur."

HOOKER, THOMAS

The Poor Doubting Christian Drawn to Christ: Wherein the main hinderances which keep men from coming to Christ are discovered; with special helps to recover God's favour. By Thomas Hooker, first minister of Hartford, Connecticut. With an abstract of the Author's Life. Also an Introduction, by Edward W. Hooker, D.D. Prof. Sacred Rhetoric in the Theological Institute of Connecticut, East Windsor.

In the introduction, Edward Hooker notes that this book "is designed for 'mourners in Zion:' for those children of God whose 'souls are cast down and disquieted within them:' for those who 'walk softly before the Lord;' who live in conflict with sin in themselves; who have been wounded with 'the fiery darts of the wicked one;' and who would prize, inestimably, the peace and comfort to be obtained by going to Calvary, and in 'sitting at the feet of Jesus.'" (p. 6).

The author, Thomas Hooker, "was one of the most esteemed divines in England, Holland, and New-England, in his day; for great abilities, a piercing judgment, solid learning, extraordinary sanctity, deep acquaintance with the Scriptures and experimental divinity, and for awakening and successful preaching; and his name and writings were very dear to multitudes of the most serious Christians in those distant countries" (p. 9). Hooker "helped found Hartford, Connecticut (1636)... He helped create Connecticut's 'Fundamental Orders' (1638) and was instrumental in forming the New England Confederation (1643)" (Encyclopedia of the Reformed Faith).

Notwithstanding these compliments, Samuel Rutherford corrected some Hooker's errors in matters related to church government and worship in A Survey of the Survey of that Summe of Church-Discipline Penned by Mr. Richard Hooker, Late Pastor of the Church at Hartford upon Connecticut in New England. Wherein The Way of the Churches in N. England is now re-examined; Arguments in favour thereof winnowed; The Principles of that Way discussed; and the Reasons of most seeming strength and nerves removed (1658) and in The Divine Right of Church Government and Excommunication: A Peaceable Dispute for the Perfection of the Holy Scripture in Point of Ceremonies and Church Government in which the Removal of the Service Book is Justified. The Six Books of Erastus Against Excommunication are Examined; with a Vindication of the Eminent Divine Theodore Beza Against the Aspersions of Erastus, The Arguments of Mr. William Pryn, Richard Hooker, Dr. Morton... and the Doctors of Aberdeen; Touching Will-Worship, Ceremonies, Imagery, Idolatry, Things Indifferent, An Ambulatory Government; The Due and Just Power of the Magistrate in Matters of Religion, and the Arguments of Mr. Pryn, in so Far as they Side with Erastus, are Moderately Discussed. Both of these titles are available at http://www.swrb.com/catalog/R.htm .

This book deals with an individual's relationship with God. Those who have doubts about their salvation are encouraged to trust in Christ alone. No one is so great a sinner as to be beyond the reach of God's mercy. "For this is all the Lord requires of us, namely, to see our sins, to be weary of them, to be content that the Lord Jesus shall reveal unto us what is amiss, and seal a pardon for it, and take it away; and further give us his grace to take down the old building, and to set up a new one in us after his image." (p. 116).

Sections are included on assurance, obtaining an interest in God's promises, and living by faith. This book is a practical help for those struggling Christians who need, once again, to be pointed to their Saviour as the only real answer to their spiritual problems.

HOUSTON, THOMAS
Letters of the Rev. James Renwick, The Last of Scotland's Covenanted Martyrs (1865)

Contains a historical sketch of Renwick's life, labours, and martyrdom, and a vindication of his character and testimony -- along with 63 of his letters (from July 8, 1682 to Feb. 17, 1688). A useful appendix is also included denouncing the Revolution settlement and rebuking "those who have no relish for a full covenanted testimony." Because of the severity of Renwick's and the "Society people's" suffering, and the wickedness of the slander and persecution they endured (which is beginning to be repeated in our day through the likes of men like Richard Bacon and other unfaithful ministers and malicious malignants), this book makes for excellent "spiritual support and consolation in difficult times." We also happily note, along with Houston, that "the resurrection of the names of the confessors and martyrs of a former age, is a sure indication of the resurrection of their principles too" -- as we see God stretching forth his hand to our wicked and sinful generation in the writings of faithful covenanted ministers like James Renwick (and many others). 290 pages.

HOUSTON, THOMAS

The Life of James Renwick
Renwick was "the last, and in various respects the most illustrious of the Scottish martyrs of the 17th century. Hated and persecuted in his own day, by the men in authority in Church and State -- caluminated and reproached by ministers and others, who professed evangelical sentiments and affected piety -- and his principles generally misrepresented and condemned even to our own day, -- yet there is abundant evidence to show that the Master whom he faithfully served, and for whose cause he willingly surrendered his life, singularly owned and honored him." This book is a historical sketch of Renwick's life, labors and martyrdom; as well as a vindication of his character and testimony. Renwick's life is most instructive in two major areas: "first -- in showing that, according to the national vows, and the reformation attainments, the whole civil polity of the nation should be conformed to the Scriptures, -- and secondly, in explaining and asserting the positive duty of distinct separation from whatever systems in the state or the church that are opposed to entire allegiance to Messiah, the Prince." Works: Doctrinal and Practical (Volume 2 of 4, 1876)
Contains the third edition of "Youthful Devotedness: Or, The Youth of the Church Instructed in the Duties of Practical Religion." This first section was written because the author was "most deeply impressed with the conviction that one of the most urgent and important duties of the Church in the present day is to give all attention to the training of the young; and to excite (the Christian community--RB) to earnest, persevering prayer on behalf of its baptized members." Also contains Houston's "The Fellowship Prayer-Meeting: The Institution, Nature, History, and Advantages of Select Christian Fellowship." This second portion should offer some help to those seeking to follow the covenanted testimony by avoiding the public ordinances of those who obstinately maintain a public testimony against the biblical Reformation attainments of our forefathers. 401 pages.

HOUSTON, THOMAS

Unity and Uniformity in the Church (1881)

This item lays out the case for unity among churches, proving its assertions from:

(1.) Throughout Scripture.

(2.) Our Lord's declaring His will both in precept and prayer.

(3.) From apostolic practise.

(4.) From the covenanted Reformation's "Solemn League and Covenant" which lead to the production of the Westminster standards.

Houston notes that in the Apostolic church "the government of the church was one and common wherever churches were planted. It was Presbyterian, and neither Prelatic, a system of monarchial despotism, nor Congregational, a system of popular democracy." This biblical and Presbyterian uniformity was considered the apostolic, visible and doctrinal manifestation of the scriptural injunction to "one Lord, one faith, (and) one baptism." Houston also points out that,

the only true and safe way of union is based on the platform of Scriptural uniformity; while that which is framed on allowing diversity in doctrine, and differences in government and worship, is a mere human contrivance, and its effect is to sanction and perpetuate divisions (which is to sanction schism under the false pretence of unity--RB), and to mar the prospect of an ultimate happy union in the church of Christ.

Biblical union and uniformity is shown to be based on "agreement in doctrine, worship, discipline, and government." Moreover, the author contends that,

this is to be constantly sought after by men united in mind and heart, pledged to God and to one another; it is to be externally manifested, and to be diligently labored for, that it may be generally and universally prevalent. It is never to be viewed as impracticable. This was the main design of the convocation of the Westminster Assembly.

The eschatological aspect of visible unity is also noticed, shedding valuable light on such postmillennial strongholds as, "The watchmen on the walls of Zion shall see eye to eye, they shall lift up the voice together, and together shall they sing" (Isa. 52:8) and "The Lord shall be King over all the earth; in that day there shall be one Lord, and His name one" (Zech. 14:9). This book is full of faithful encouragement and is one of the best introductions to this topic we have seen.

HOWIE, JOHN

Biographia Scoticana: or, A Brief Historical Account of the Lives, Characters, and Memorable Transactions of the Most Eminent Scots Worthies

(Second edition, corrected and enlarged, 1781)

Most commonly known as "Scots Worthies," this edition contains Howie's footnotes (defending the Covenanters) and Howie's appendix titled "The Judgment and Justice of God" (which chronicles God's judgments upon Reformation apostates and those who persecuted the Covenanters). It is the only edition in print which contains both these sections intended for publication by the author (as later editors often removed either one or both of these parts of this book). Biographia Scoticana covers the history of "noblemen, gentlemen, ministers and others from Mr. Patrick Hamilton, who was born about the year of our Lord 1503, and suffered martyrdom at St Andrews, Feb, 1527, to Mr. James Renwick, who was executed in the Grass-market of Edinburgh, Feb. 17, 1688. Together with a succinct account of the lives of other seven eminent divines, and Sir Robert Hamilton of Preston, who died about, or shortly after the Revolution." This is one of our best history books (over 700 pages), covering all of the major Scottish Reformers.

Howie summarizes his book as follows:

The design of the following was to collect, from the best authorities, a summary account of the lives, characters, and contendings, of a certain number of our most renowned SCOTS WORTHIES, who, for their faithful services, ardent zeal, constancy in sufferings, and other Christian graces and virtues, deserve honourable memorial in the Church of Christ; and for which their names have been, and will be savoury to all the true lovers of our Zion, while Reformation principles are regarded.

Furthermore, the momentous nature of the struggles chronicled in this book are succinctly noted when Howie writes:

the primitive witnesses had the divinity of the Son of God, and an open confession of Him, for their testimony. Our reformers from Popery had Antichrist to struggle with, in asserting the doctrines of the Gospel, and the right way of salvation in and through Jesus Christ. Again, in the reigns of James VI. and Charles I., Christ's REGALIA, and the divine right of Presbytery, became the subject matter of their testimony. Then, in the beginning of the reign of Charles II. (until he got the whole of our ancient and laudable constitution effaced and overturned), our Worthies only saw it their duty to hold and contend for what they had already attained unto. But, in the end of this and the subsequent tyrant's reign, they found it their duty (a duty which they had too long neglected) to advance one step higher, by casting off their authority altogether, and that as well on account of their manifest usurpation of Christ's crown and dignity, as on account of their treachery, bloodshed, and tyranny... which may be summed up. The Primitive martyrs sealed the prophetic office of Christ in opposition to Pagan idolatry. The reforming martyrs sealed His priestly office with their blood, in opposition to Popish idolatry. And last of all, our late martyrs have sealed His kingly office with their best blood, in despite of supremacy and bold Erastianism. They indeed have cemented it upon His royal head, so that to the world's end it shall never drop off again.

Moreover, the importance of this book can be clearly seen when Johnston, in Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, reports that, "Walter Scott refers to Howie as 'the fine old chronicler of the Cameronians' ...Howie's book has been for upwards of a century a household word, occupying a place on the shelf beside the Bible and the Pilgrim's Progress." Written for God, country, and the covenanted work of Reformation. Stirring history!

Here is a short (and amazing!) sample from this most edifying book -- and there are many others like it in Howie's classic:

From "The Life of Mr. John Welch" in John Howie's Biographia Scoticana or Scots Worthies (1871 edition, http://www.swrb.com/catalog/h.htm). John Welch "married Elizabeth Knox, daughter to the famous Mr. John Knox minister at Edinburgh... If his diligence was great, so it may be doubted whether his sowing in painfulness, or his harvest in success was greatest; for if either his spiritual experiences in seeking the Lord, or his fruitfulness in converting souls be considered, they will be found unparalleled in Scotland: And many years after Mr. Welch's death, Mr. David Dickson... when people talked to him of the success of his ministry, that the grape-gleanings in Aye, in Mr. Welch's time, were far above the vintage of Irvine in his own... One of his hearers, who was afterward minister at Moor-kirk in Kyle, used to say, that no man could hear him and forbear weeping, his conveyance was so affecting" (p. 137 and 151, emphases added).

"He was sometime prisoner in Edinburgh castle before he went into exile, where one night sitting at supper with the Lord Ochiltry, who was uncle to Mr. Welch's wife, as his manner was, he entertained the company with godly and edifying discourse, which was well received by all the company, except a debauched popish young gentleman, who sometimes laughed, and sometimes mocked and made wry faces; whereupon Mr. Welch brake out into a sad abrupt charge upon all the company to be silent, and observe the work of the Lord upon that profane mocker, which they should presently behold; upon which the profane wretch sunk down and died beneath the table, to the great astonishment of all the company" (p. 143).

"There was in his house, amongst many others who boarded with him for good education, a young gentleman of great quality, and suitable expectations, and this was the heir of Lord Ochiltry, captain of the castle of Edinburgh. This young nobleman, after he had gained very much upon Mr. Welch's affections, fell ill of a grievous sickness, and after he had been long wasted with it, closed his eyes, and expired, to the apprehension of all spectators, and was therefore taken out of his bed, and laid on a pallet on the floor, that his body might be the more conveniently dressed. This was to Mr. Welch a very great grief, and therefore he stayed with the dead body full three hours, lamenting over him with great tenderness. After twelve hours, the friends brought in a coffin, whereinto they desired the corpse to be put, as the custom is; but Mr. Welch desired, that for the satisfaction of his affections, they would forbear it for a time, which they granted, and returned not till twenty-four hours after his death were expired; then they desired, with great importunity, that the corpse might be coffined, and speedily buried, the weather being extremely hot; yet he persisted in his request, earnestly begging them to excuse him once more; so they left the corpse upon the pallet for full thirty-six hours; but even after all that, though he was urged, not only with great earnestness, but displeasure, they were constrained to forbear for twelve hours more. After forty-eight hours were passed, Mr. Welch still held out against them, and then his friends perceiving that he believed the young man was not really dead, but under some apoplectic fit, proposed to him, for his satisfaction, that trial should be made upon his body by doctors and chirurgeons, if possibly any spark of life might be found in him, and with this he was content. -- So the physicians are set to work, who pinched him with pincers in the fleshy parts of his body, and twisted a bow-string about his head with great force, but no sign of life appearing in him, the physicians pronounced him stark dead, and then there was no more delay to be made; yet Mr. Welch begged of them once more, that they would but step into the next room for an hour or two, and leave him with the dead youth; and this they granted. Then Mr. Welch fell down before the pallet, and cried to the Lord with all his might, and sometimes looked upon the dead body, continuing in wrestling with the Lord, till at length the dead youth opened his eyes, and cried out to Mr. Welch, whom he distinctly knew, O Sir, I am all whole, but my head and legs; and these were the places they had fore hurt with their pinching.

"When Mr. Welch perceived this, he called upon his friends, and shewed them the dead young man restored to life again, to their great astonishment. And this young nobleman, though he lost the estate of Ochiltry, lived to acquire a great estate in Ireland, and was Lord Castle-Stuart, and a man of such excellent parts, that he was courted by the earl of Stafford to be a counsellor in Ireland; which he refused to be, until the godly silenced Scottish ministers, who suffered under the bishops in the north of Ireland, were restored to the exercise of their ministry, and then he engaged, and continued so for all his life, not only in honour and power, but in the profession and practice of godliness, to the great comfort of the country where he lived. This story the nobleman himself communicated to his friends in Ireland" (pp. 146-147).

"Walter Scott refers to Howie as 'the fine old chronicler of the Cameronians' ...Howie's book has been for upwards of a century a household word, occupying a place on the shelf beside the Bible and the Pilgrim's Progress." (Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, http://www.swrb.com/catalog/J.htm).

DICKSON, JOHN

Christ's Comfort Under Distress

This may be one of the most encouraging sermons you will ever hear! It was preached in January of 1675 and is read by elder Lyndon Dohms from the book A Collection of Very Valuable Sermons: Preached on several Subjects and in divers Places in the time of the Late Persecution. By these Eminent Servants of Jesus Christ, Messrs John Kid, John King, John Welch, John Blackadder, John Dickson, and Gabriel Semple. Collected and Transcribed from different Manuscripts, by John Howie; and Published at the request of those who desire to Own the same Testimony, that some of these Authors Owned and Sealed with their Blood (edited by John Howie [1780], $4.97 P; $9.00 HP). It contains incredible Scriptural insights and is a great example of the classic Covenanter preaching that took place during times of intense persecution, when faithful ministers were often hunted and martyred for their stand for Christ's Crown and Covenant.

HOWIE, JOHN (Collector and Transcriber)

Faithful Contendings Displayed (1780)
The title continues: "Being an historical relation of the state and actings of the suffering remnant in the church of Scotland, who subsisted in select societies, and were united in general correspondencies during the hottest time of the late persecution, viz. from the year 1681 to 1691. Together with an account of the state of the land in general, and of the society people in particular, in the intervals betwixt each of their general meetings, with some pertinent remarks upon these historical occurrences, and many letters to and from the general correspondent meetings, etc. Collected and kept in record by Mr. Michael Shields, who was clerk unto these general societies, and personally present at most of their meetings. To which is added, ten considerations on the danger of apostacy and defection from a covenanted work of reformation. By Mr. James Guthrie, sometime minister of the Gospel at Stirling. As also, a collection of very valuable sermons, preached by these faithful and eminent servants of Jesus Christ, Messrs. John Kid, John King, John Welch, John Blackadder, John Dickson, and Gabriel Semple. Collected and transcribed by John Howie, and published at the desire of some of those who desire to own the same testimony that some of those authors owned and sealed with their blood." Howie is famous for his Biographia Scoticana: or, A Brief Historical Account of the Lives, Characters, and Memorable Transactions of the Most Eminent Scots Worthies
(often just called Scots Worthies), but this work is just as valuable. A massive, rare classic, in which Howie aims at "the gaining of friends unto, or confirming them in the covenanted interest, in a subserviency to God's glory and the good of His church" (preface, p. xxiv). Contains much information on the Reformation and the sufferings of the Covenanters which is found nowhere else (to our knowledge). 558 pages.

HOWIE, JOHN

James Stewart & John Knox: Scotland's "Two Sons of Oil" (excerpted from John Howie's Scots Worthies, 1781 ed.; audio cassette, narrated by Larry Birger, Jr.)
As Birger accurately observes in his introduction to this one-tape reformational powerhouse, "One great reason the Church is so weak and divided today is precisely because she has rejected these commandments of her Lord and Husband [to walk in the footsteps of the flock (Song 1:8), and to seek out and walk in the old paths (Jer. 6:16)]. Forgetting the works of God in history, she has thus become an easy prey to the old lies and idolatries of the Roman Catholic Church, that whore of Babylon, such that so-called Protestantism today in many ways bears more resemblance to the Roman Church than to the biblical churches of the Reformation. We are indeed ignorant of our history, and therefore have been doomed time and again to repeat its mistakes." He continues, pointing to one of God's powerful remedies for our sinful failings in this area: "Our gracious Lord has nonetheless provided a way out for us, by preserving for us the narratives of His great works in history, as well as His infallible Word by which to judge which are truly the good old paths.... On this tape you'll hear of the lives of two men who exemplified the work of Christ's 'Two Witnesses' in Scotland, James Stewart, Earl of Moray, and John Knox. These 'Two Sons of Oil,' like their ancient predecessors, Zerubbabel and Joshua, illustrate the holy beauty and mighty effectiveness of God's institutions of Scriptural civil magistracy and gospel ministry. We see from their high regard for one another and from the work they accomplished in the Lord how both righteous civil rulers and faithful gospel ministers are necessary for true and lasting, society-changing reformation. In our age of ungodly toleration and pretended liberty of conscience (as opposed to the true Scriptural liberty of conscience promoted by these two eminent reformers), the emphasis is generally laid upon the ministry only as the agent of reformation -- and truly, there will be no lasting reformation without a faithful ministry. Nevertheless, we see from the Scriptural examples of Hezekiah, Josiah, and other godly rulers, as well as from various instances throughout subsequent history that the civil rulers are called by, and used by, God to promote and protect the welfare of His Bride, the Church. These rulers have no authority in matters of religion, but they have a responsibility about matters of religion -- to do things like suppressing and uprooting heresy, blasphemy, and idolatry, and encouraging and promoting faithful ministers -- as all our faithful Reformed forefathers taught." Learn with excitement how God used these two faithful men to defeat Antichrist in Scotland, and purify and unify His faithful Church there. A great tool for seeing the vital importance of the civil government (as well as the ministry) in reformation!

HOWIE, JOHN

The Judgment and Justice of God Exemplified (1782)

The subtitle reads: "A Brief Historical Account of the Wicked Lives and Miserable Deaths of some of the most remarkable Apostates and bloody Persecutors in Scotland, from the Reformation till after the Revolution; Collected from Historical Records, Authenticated Writings, and other well- vouched Relations." The place this writing originally had as an appendix to Scots Worthies can be seen in the way Howie compares the saints (and their end) with the reprobates (and their end), in the introduction to this work. Howie comments, "let us through the foregoing mirror and following prospect, view the Lord's admirable goodness to his own dear children even when walking through the furnace of afflictions, with his just and severe indignation and resentment even in this life upon his and their enemies. Let us behold the one wafted over the dark river in the arms of the Redeemer (though sometimes on a bloody bottom) unto the flowery banks of Emmanuel's land;-- while the other is with an awful gloom of horror hurled head-long into the pit of destruction. Let us by faith apprehend those thousands of thousands at Christ's right hand, singing 'Allelujah, true and righteous are his judgments; he hath judged the great whore, and avenged the blood of his servants,'-- with a numberless throng on his left hand of these miscreants sentenced unto that place of torment and woe, where they shall have an eternity to bewail their infidelity, impiety, avarice, ambition, cruelty, and stupidity in. And, in fine, if the following hints shall serve for no other purpose, they will stand for an incontestable evidence of the very first principle of religion, that there is a God to reward the righteous and punish the wicked:-- 'So that men shall say, Verily, there is a reward for the righteous; verily there is a God that judgeth in the earth.'" One of the many instructive (and often startling) accounts provided by Howie notes how the young man "who gave the covenants out of his hand (in Edinburgh--RB) to the hangman to be burnt... never had the use of that hand after," as "the Lord would not suffer him to go unpunished in this life." Some later editors sought to suppress the information contained in this book (of 68 pages) and thus removed it from its intended place as an appendix to the best editions of Scots Worthies. In seeking to correct this misstep we offer it again to the public for the first time in many years. We have also added it back into our photocopy editions of Scots Worthies.

HOWIE, JOHN

Memoirs of the Life of John Howie... Containing A Series of Religious Exercises, Soul Soliloquies, Meditations, and an Account of the Lord's Goodness to Him in General (1796)

This book consists primarily of John Howie's recounting of the last few years of his life. Howie lived from 1735 to 1793 and followed in the footsteps of Christ's faithful flock, the Covenanter remnant who stood for all of the scriptural covenanted attainments of the Church of Scotland. During his life he wrote the famous Biographia Scoticana (also known as Scots Worthies), and he complied A Collection of Very Valuable Sermons and Faithful Contendings Displayed. In the last years of his life he struggled over the assurance of his salvation, and most of the book deals with this struggle. He does, however, discuss other matters as well.

Howie loved the truth and was willing to fight for the points of truth he believed. "I was fully persuaded, that they were truths, and of weight, and therefore every declension, or denying of truth, even what may be called the least of truths, (of whom none is little) was, by consequence, a denying of Him who is truth (p. 134)."

As a Covenanter, Howie recognized that the church of his time was in a desperate condition, but that did not make him entirely pessimistic. "As to the church, I apprehended her case very dark and deplorable; yet durst not entertain thoughts of the Lord's totally and finally leaving covenanted Scotland, as He had accepted a sacrifice by the blood of His faithful martyrs (p. 153)."

The last part of the book consists of the Dying Testimony of James Howie, John Howie's great grandfather who had lived as a faithful Covenanter in the latter half of the 1600s. This testimony, written in 1691, notes the sad state that most Christians were in. "The idol of self has been set up above God's glory, which has prevailed in many, which once set fair forward, but are now turned back, and have joined those that have not been friends to the interest of Christ, and the covenanted work of Reformation, or else fallen secure or unconcerned in His cause (p. 181)." He closes his statement with encouragement to be steadfast in spite of the slander that one will likely receive when adhering to the attainments of the Covenanted Reformation. "And it may be you may meet with the most sharp treatment from these who joined sweet counsel, and went unto the ordinances and house of God with you. And though you should be called Schismatics, Renters, and Dividers, and men of other Strange opinions: Yet of all these be not ashamed, or cause you to desert the good old way, wherein much of the Lord's presence has been found (p. 189)."

This book can help those who struggle with their assurance of salvation to see how others have handled this problem. It can also help other contemporary Christians to get a glimpse of life among the Covenanted remnant.

HOWIE, JOHN

The Scots Worthies
This book covers the life and times of the most notable Scottish Reformers from 1503 to just after 1688. Howie's grandfather personally witnessed some of the momentous times chronicled in this book, and lived until Howie was twenty. "We can easily, without much stretch of the imagination, picture to ourselves the old man in his chair, with the boy standing, before him, while the former related to his eager listener some of those incidents in which he himself had taken a part," notes the editor. This is the revised edition, edited by Carslaw (1870). It includes numerous illustrations. Later editors, like Carslaw, removed Howie's appendix titled "The Judgment and Justice of God" (which chronicles God's judgments upon apostates and those who persecuted the Covenanters); but we have added the original appendix back into this volume. Howie's footnotes have also been removed from this edition and can only be found (in print today) in the 1781 edition of the book (titled Biographia Scoticana
) which we also keep in print.

HUNT, DAVE and JAMES R. WHITE (DEBATE)

Debating Calvinism: Five Points, Two Views (2004)

"When it comes to the issues of the freedom of God, the efficacy of grace, and the will of man, Mr. Hunt's evangelical tradition stands side by side with Rome in denying the heart of the Reformation." James White.

James White, a defender of the Biblical doctrine of salvation against the traditions of Arminius (and his numerous followers), opens this book by providing background information and then stating the central issue:

"In the late summer of 2000, I interviewed Dave Hunt on KPXQ radio in Phoenix. Mr. Hunt had just published an article in the Berean Call attacking the Reformed position. The article misquoted Matthew 23:37 and presented the 'standard' objections to Calvinism, objections based primarily upon evangelical/Arminian traditions and common misconceptions concerning the actual beliefs of Calvinists. I had written a full-length response to Norman Geisler on the same topic in The Potter's Freedom, but Dr. Geisler had declined every opportunity for dialogue, especially public dialogue and debate. I knew Dave Hunt would not decline such an invitation.

"When we began the program, I noted that both Dave Hunt and I engage in public, formal debates with Roman Catholic apologists. I also noted that I had recently debated Robert Sungenis, a Catholic apologist, on the topic of justification by faith. Here is how the first question and response between Dave Hunt and me went:

"White: One of the key issues that came out there…this is one of the main reasons I contacted you, one of the main reasons I wrote you the letter…is the issue of monergism versus synergism; that is, the idea that there is one force that brings about salvation, over against a synergistic viewpoint that views it as a cooperation, a cooperative effort between two forces, man and God. And the reason I brought that up…is that Mr. Sungenis, in representing the Roman Catholic perspective, very strongly attacked the Reformed emphasis upon the sovereignty of the grace of God…. In light of your article, and the fact that…you reject the concept of irresistible grace…you and I are responding to one of the key issues of the Reformation in a different way. In essence, my first question to you would be: Do you feel that the Reformers Martin Luther and John Calvin were in error in emphasizing the deadness of man in sin and the absolute necessity--not just necessity, but sufficiency--of the grace of God to bring a person to salvation?

"Hunt: Well, first of all, James, I'm very ignorant of the Reformers. I have not had time to read them. There are truckloads, I guess, of their writings. I like to just kinda' pretend that we're back there in the days of the apostles before all of these things were written. And I like to go to the Bible. So whether the Reformers said this or that, I don't know.

"Mr. Hunt went on to say that we should go to the Bible, and I surely agreed with that. But I was surprised that he was unaware of the issue Luther had described as the very hinge upon which the entire Reformation turned; namely, the freedom of God and the sufficiency of the grace of God in salvation. This was even more surprising due to the fact that Mr. Hunt's attacks upon the Reformed faith parallel those of Roman Catholics. When it comes to the issues of the freedom of God, the efficacy of grace, and the will of man, Mr. Hunt's evangelical tradition stands side by side with Rome in denying the heart of the Reformation" [emphasis added] (pp. 11-12).

The real issue, as White points out, is that Biblical salvation (contrary to the views of Dave Hunt and the Pope) is monergistic rather than synergistic.

"Monergists (such as Calvinists) believe there is one power involved in bringing about salvation (God's), while synergists (Arminians, Roman Catholics, and most of man's religions) believe it to be a cooperative effort, with the majority, of course, being done by God, but, in the final analysis, with control remaining in the hands of man" (p. 207).

According to Calvinism (and the Bible) salvation is by faith alone. But according to Roman Catholicism and Arminianism, salvation is by faith plus works or faith plus man's decision. Man contributes some sort of merit in order to be saved.

HUTCHISON, MATTHEW

The Reformed Presbyterian Church in Scotland: Its Origin and History, 1680-1876

This is the only book-length history covering the period after 1680 (to 1876), when the majority Synod of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Scotland merged with the Free Church of Scotland. The history after 1822, when the Auchensaugh Renovation was removed as a term of communion, merely chronicles the wholesale backsliding of the church and eventual split in 1863; from which a majority emerged which joined with the Free Church of Scotland in 1876. A remnant of the minority of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Scotland still exists, however they never returned to the original position of the church from which it began to depart in 1822 (with the removal of the Auchensaugh bond -- which bond is the Auchensaugh Renovation listed under the Reformed Presbytery at http://www.swrb.com/catalog/R.htm).

This book is a fine illustration of the "footsteps of the flock," (as seen in the Protesters [paleopresbyterians] and their spiritual posterity), during the period of which it deals, while at the same time serving as a clear warning to those who have declined from Reformation attainments (i.e. the Resolutioners [neopresbyterians] and those who continue their deformation of the faith). Thomas Sproull writes,

By the National Covenant our Fathers laid Popery prostrate. By the Solemn League and Covenant they were successful in resisting prelatic encroachments and civil tyranny. By it they were enabled to achieve the Second Reformation... They were setting up landmarks by which the location and limits of the city of God will be known at the dawn of the millennial day... How can they be said to go forth by the footsteps of the flock, who have declined from the attainments, renounced the covenants and contradicted the testimony of 'the cloud of witnesses.'... All the schisms (separations) that disfigure the body mystical of Christ... are the legitimate consequences of the abandonment of reformation attainments -- the violation of covenant engagements.

Understanding where the faithful covenanted servants of Christ have been historically, not only helps individuals to separate between truly constituted churches and the those that are false (because they have constitutionally backslidden from Reformation attainments); but is a necessary component to the keeping the fifth commandment, as the Reformed Presbytery has pointed out,

Nor otherwise can a Christian know the time or place of his birth, or the persons whom God commands him to honor as his father and mother, than by uninspired testimony; and the same is true of his covenant obligation, if baptized in infancy. Against all who ignorantly or recklessly reject or oppose history as a bond of fellowship, in the family, in the state, but especially in the church, we thus enter our solemn and uncompromising protest (Excerpted from: The Act, Declaration and Testimony for the Whole of Our Covenanted Reformation... by the Reformed Presbytery [http://www.swrb.com/catalog/R.htm], pp. 177-178 -- a SWRB rare bound photocopy [1761], reprinted 1995 from the 1876 edition).

This edition of The Reformed Presbyterian Church in Scotland: Its Origin and History, 1680-1876 also contains an introductory note by William Goold (the editor of John Owen's Works). In introducing this book Goold writes,

This volume may claim attention as supplying an essential link in the ecclesiastical history of Scotland. It is the history of that body of men who adhered to the civil part of the Second Reformation, according to which Presbytery was established and recognized by the State between 1638 and 1649... The Church of which this volume is a history took its rise in its distinctive character at this period, and on the ground that it could not, while acknowledging the relief from oppression which the Revolution (of 1688) afforded, acquiesce in the arrangements made by the State for the recognition of the Church and the due exercise of its authority within its own spiritual domain (because the so-called 'glorious revolution' was Erastian to the core and also denied the previous national covenant engagements--RB).... Apart, however, from their testimony in regard to this evil and danger, resulting from a Civil Government in which Prelacy was continued as an essential element, those who dissented from the Revolution Settlement, and from whom the Reformed Presbyterian Church arose, were animated with an earnest zeal for the maintenance of religious ordinances. They strove to exist as a Church, and how far they succeeded, and what difficulties they had to surmount in the attempt, is the interesting story recorded in this volume (pp. v-vi).

In summary, this book (of 450 pages) is a one-of-a-kind chronicle of an integral part of the history of the battle for the "Crown Rights and Royal Prerogatives of the Lord Jesus Christ."
