The Covenanted Reformation Defended Against Contemporary
Schismatics: A Response and Antidote Primarily to the Neopresbyterian
Malignancy and Misrepresentations, and the Manufactured "Steelite"
Controversy, Found in Richard Bacon's A Defense Departed; With a Refutation of
Bacon's Independency, Popery, Arminianism, Anabaptism and Various Other
Heresies (Including an Exhibition of His Opposition to Scripture and the
Covenanted Reformation, in General; and His Opposition to John Calvin, John
Knox, the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland [Especially 1638-1649],
Samuel Rutherford, George Gillespie, the Testimony of the Covenanter Martyrs,
the Reformed Presbytery, the Puritan Reformed Church of Edmonton and a Host of
Other Prominent Reformers from Past Generations, in Particular) -- With Copious
Notes on Mr. Bacon's Backsliding and His Blackening of the Blue Banner; as Well
as Various Replies to Other Modern Malignants by Greg Barrow (Greg Price, Dr.
Reg Barrow, Dr. Larry Birger, et al.) (Though set in the context of a debate with one
individual, this book addresses a number of specific problems which plague the
Presbyterian and Reformed churches of our day in general. "It conclusively
and irrefutably demonstrates that those churches which today call themselves
Presbyterian [and even many which claim a more general Reformed heritage] have
grievously departed from the Scriptural standards and principles of the
previous Spirit led Reformations [of the 16th and 17th centuries]. This will
become progressively [and painfully] clear as the reader witnesses evidence
upon evidence of defection from biblically based Reformation attainments (Phil.
3:16) -- and the burying and/or removing of the ancient Reformation landmarks.
Ultimately, when the testimony and evidence [presented in this book] is weighed
in light of Scriptural verities, it is entirely safe to say that the original
Reformers would not only have sought negative ecclesiastical sanctions against
our modern pseudo-Reformers, but in many cases negative civil sanctions as
well," writes Reg Barrow in the "Publisher's Preface." This
book, of over 300 [8.5" X 11"] pages, is also offered as a cerlox
bound photocopy [$14.98 US funds] or a Hardcover photocopy [$25.00 US funds].)
Saul in the Cave of Adullam: A Testimony Against the Fashionable
Sub-Calvinism of Doug Wilson (Editor of Credenda/Agenda Magazine); and, for Classical Protestantism and
the Attainments of the Second Reformation by Dr. Reg Barrow
Doug Wilson and others at Credenda/Agenda used their magazine to publicly attack and slander
Reg Barrow (President of Still Waters Revival Books) in a column that they call
the "Cave of Adullam." This invective was Credenda's response to Barrow's comments on Knox Ring (where Barrow
noted that John Calvin would have excommunicated John Frame for the apostasy
that he manifests in his new book on worship). Numerous private attempts were
unsuccessfully made (by Barrow and others) to call Wilson to repentance for
this slander. Ultimately, charges for violation of the ninth commandment were
brought (in accord with Matt. 18:15-17) against Wilson by Barrow. This book
recounts the salient points of the controversy (and the Matthew 18 proceedings)
between Wilson and Barrow -- in their actual email debates! Also included is
Barrow's demonstration of why Calvin would have excommunicated Frame and Greg
Price's Testimony Against The Unfounded Charges of Anabaptism. These debates are a classic example of the
differences that exist today between paleopresbyterians (Barrow) and
neopresbyterians (Wilson). Wilson's
charges against Barrow, of Anabaptism, separatism, etc. are all refuted under a
mountain of quotations from Reformation source documents. Barrow's refutations
of Wilson's spurious charges bring to light many aspects of Reformation thought
that have been lost or forgotten in our day. Besides the initial controversy
(over Frame and worship) and the restoration process (set forth in Matthew
18:15-17), this book should be of special interest to all of those who love the
"old paths" of truth -- trod by our forefathers in the Reformed faith
-- for some of the most pressing issues of our day (regarding the individual,
church and state) are addressed herein. Classic statements, cited by Barrow, not
only exhibit the wisdom which God granted the best Reformers of both the first
and second Reformations, but also specifically demonstrate how Wilson and many
other modern Protestants actually reject the Reformation at many points (all
their protests not withstanding). "And they that shall be of thee shall
build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many
generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer
of paths to dwell in" (Isa. 58:12). This item is also available as a bound
photocopy for $3.98 (US funds).

Forgotten Hero: The Autobiography of David Steele by Dr. Michael Wagner (1998)
Pornography, the Anabaptists, and Doug Wilson's Civil Antinomianism
(1997) by Dr. Reg Barrow
(Pointed but irenic, Barrow decisively refutes the view of Doug Wilson (cf.
"Cyberporn: A Case Study" [Credenda/Agenda, vol. 7, no. 5, p. 11]), many modern Theonomists
and the civil libertarians, that the production and distribution of pornography
is not a crime (and thus not subject to negative penal sanctions by the civil
magistrate). Barrow demonstrates that Wilson's view of civil government (which
logically results in such a monstrous conclusion) is actually a overly strict
view of the regulative principle. This "hyper-regulativism" (denying
lawful inferences, or what Samuel Rutherford calls "logical
consequence") is then wrongly applied to the civil magistrate, rather than
to worship (when rightly interpreted). He also points out the link between
Wilson's view and the principles of the Anabaptists, Libertines and other
antiestablishmentarian forces. With an impressive array of historical citations
(primarily John Calvin, George Gillespie, Samuel Rutherford, and the
Westminster Confession of Faith), and a cogent analysis and application of
relevant Scripture passages, Barrow shows clearly that Wilson's view of civil
government "gives birth to illegitimate offspring in the case of
pornography, contradicting as it does common sense (the light of nature), our
reformed fathers in the faith, and the express commands and approved examples
of Scripture. In short, it is anything but the 'classical Protestant' position,
and anything but biblical." Expressing his belief that many hold to this
erroneous notion of the magistrate out of ignorance, he concludes his essay
with a heartfelt call to his modern Theonomic brethren (and others) to study the reformation source
documents now available (and adopt the historic Theonomy of the Reformation). He also provides a brief list of questions that
readily manifest the socially destructive outworkings of Wilson's teaching.
This is a much-needed treatment of a topic neglected for far too long. Barrow's
valuable contribution is an excellent introduction to the historical
theonomy of the Westminster divines
and is sure to prime the reader for much productive study of the view of civil
government "once delivered unto the saints" (Jude 3). This item is
also available as a bound photocopy for $1.99 [US funds]) and is appendix

Terms of Ministerial and Christian Communion in

Church; With Explanatory Dialogue (Including "The Biblical and Logical
Necessity of Uninspired Creeds") by Larry Birger (This delightful dialogue, between Hans (a paleopresbyterian)
and Franz (a neo-turned-paleopresbyterian), deals (in a very clear,
easy-to-understand way) with a number of the more controversial and
misunderstood teachings adopted by the Puritan Reformed Church of Edmotnon and
promoted by SWRB in their return to the biblical attainments of the Second, or
Covenanted Reformation on the British Isles. The conversation begins with
"The Biblical and Logical Necessity of Uninspired Creeds", where Hans
shows Franz that Franz's rejection of uninspired creeds is itself an uninspired
creed. After several months of study Franz is now interested in joining Hans'
Covenanter church, but has been confused and unsettled by the charges of his
friend (a member of the RPCNA). This RPCNA friend alleges that Hans' church is
a continuation of the "schism" of the "Steelites", and that
they are "basically Papists, putting uninspired works on a par with the
Bible and then abusing (their) church authority by requiring faith in the
church, rather than in the word of God." Hans then goes through and
explains pertinent aspects of each term of communion, demonstrating that the
RPCNA friend's charges and objections are entirely inaccurate, vindicating in
the process precious and vital truths of the Reformation. This easy-reading and
mild-mannered dialogue includes an index of topics discussed and objections
raised, and is an excellent introduction to the true Covenanter position
(i.e. the position of the Westminster Assembly and the Church of Scotland
during the Second Reformation). See

A Testimony Against the Unfounded Charges of
Anabaptism (1997) by Greg Price (This book teaches us that "[t]he heresy of Anabaptism lives
today! It has infected the modern church with its cancerous errors and
heresies: anti-creedalism, arminianism, dispensationalism, independency [sectarianism],
anti-paedobaptism, will-worship [anti-regulativism], perfectionism, societal
escapism, religious pluralism and tolerationism [anti-establishmentarianism],
denial of the perpetual obligation of social covenanting, pacifism, pietism,
socialism, premillennialism, and a refusal to recognize *lawful* civil
government as the ordinance of God. These unbiblical positions of the
Anabaptists were not tolerated by the Reformed Churches of the First and Second
Reformations, and neither should they be tolerated by any Church today that
claims to be Reformed or Presbyterian" [Greg Price]. Far to little
contemporary Reformed writing has been directed against the Anabaptists,
especially in light of the fact that many of their heresies have been generally
adopted by professing Christians. Even the "Reformed" community
suffers from this contagion. Lord willing, this book with be an effective
antidote to the "AIDS" of Anabaptist thought and practice. This item

Reformation and uniformity found in the public subordinate standards and
covenants emitted and upheld by the Westminster Divines -- all which are
agreeable to and based upon the alone infallible standard, the Word of God). A
full length response is being prepared, to Dick Bacon's Defense Departed, by Greg Barrow and will be released in the near

obvious blunders, poor scholarship and misrepresentations of Bacon, one of the
chief malignants of our day. It may also be interesting for the reader to note
that though we had to be informed of Bacon's attack upon our positions through

The Declaration of Repudiation: A Public Testimony
Against Modern North American Evangelicalism by Dr. Michael Wagner (Wagner shows how modern Evangelicals have been
swallowed up by the beast [civilly and ecclesiastically -- and especially in
regard to doctrine] in that they now deny the most important biblical
attainments of the Protestant Reformation. Arminianism [the decisionalistic
free-will heresy] and man-made innovations in worship are rampant. If the
Reformers were around today they would testify, as Wagner does, against modern
evangelicalism -- in that the modern evangelicals have adopted more of the
basic tenets of Rome than of the Reformation. "[T]he Scriptural
theological attainments of the Reformation have been abandoned by modern North
American Evangelicalism; and to make matters worse, an unscriptural disdain for
doctrine has immunized many evangelicals from a recovery of Reformation
truth," states Wagner. This article seeks to repudiate and remedy the
deformation of evangelicalism.

in the PCA, with an historical introduction. Birger states, "This work is
emitted by way of testimony against the defections from the reformation of the true
religion granted by God in ages past, in hopes of playing some small part in
the edification of God's people currently languishing under such defected and
defecting denominations." It spotlights the differences between classic
Presbyterian thought [paleopresbyterianism] and what today is but a pale
imitation [neopresbyterianism] of the Reformation attainments that have been
won [at the cost of much suffering and many lives] in the past. This is a good
practical introduction to ecclesiology, testimony-bearing, and second
Reformation thought.)

Presbyterian Worship: Old and New by Kevin Reed (A Review and Commentary upon Worship in Spirit
and Truth, a book by John Frame
[Phillipsburg, N.J.: Presbyterian and Reformed Pub. Co.,1996; paper, 171
pages]. Reed shows how Frame has abandoned the Reformation, both scripturally
and confessionally, in regard to worship. He also gives an excellent summary of
historic Reformed views and then contrasts them with the novel ideas now being
touted by Frame. In light of the fact that Frame teaches at a Presbyterian
seminary and is also a Presbyterian pastor (in the P.C.A.), Reed notes the
"distressing implications regarding the disingenuous nature of
confessional subscription within both the churches and the seminaries."
Moreover, Reed comments that "there are also troubling ramifications
concerning the doctrine of scripture, since the regulative principle rests upon
the foundation of the sufficiency of scripture, with respect to worship."
He continues by concluding that "Frame's book furnishes patent evidence
that ecclesiastical discipline is lacking in the churches, and that seminary
professors can teach heterodox views with impunity. If Presbyterians took their
creed seriously, Mr. Frame would be removed from both the seminary and the
pastorate, and not allowed to teach. But in the current situation, the majority
of pastors, seminarians, and the people are partners in the crimes of corrupt
worship and confessional laxity. 'A wonderful and horrible thing is committed
in the land; the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their
means; and my people love to have it so.'")

Dr. Reg Barrow
(In this short letter Reg Barrow replies to
an inquirer [on Knox Ring] asking for comments concerning John Frame's claim

post was James Jordan's assertion that the classic view of the regulative
principle is sectarian. Barrow, in the short space allotted on KR, begins to
demonstrate how both Frame and Jordan have apostatized and would have been
rejected by the Presbyterian and Reformed wing of the Reformation.)

list]. No one, including Bell, has yet to attempt an answer. Barrow answers
many specific questions regarding the permanence of covenant obligation,
national Reformation, historical testimony and many other doctrines which were
prevalent during the period of the second Reformation. A wealth of original
[Reformation] texts are cited throughout and this spirited debate should help
to generate interest in many of those biblical attainments which were won
during those glorious days in which major nations openly covenanted themselves
[as moral persons] to Christ.)

(Explains why Christians should separate themselves from those groups which
deny biblical truth and its implications.)
The Antinomian Streak in the Reconstructionist

Plain Reasons for Presbyterians Dissenting from
the Revolution Church of Scotland. Also, Their Principles Concerning Civil
Government, and the Difference Betwixt the Reformation and Revolution
Principles (1731) by Andrew
Clarkson (An exceedingly rare and
important book now back in print after 265 years! The Contending Witness magazine [May, 1841] described Plain Reasons "as the single best volume penned
defending the principles of the second Reformation." It sets forth "the grounds why
Presbyterian Dissenters refused to hold communion with the revolution church
and state," [Reformed
Presbytery, Act Declaration and Testimony for the Whole of Our Covenanted
Reformation, p. 154n]. The biblical
principles contained in this book still apply today and thus Plain Reasons remains one of the best books explaining why [and
when] an individual [church or citizen] should separate himself [or itself, as
a corporate moral person] from those [in church or state] who do not hold fast
to all the attainments of our covenanted Reformation forefathers. In this regard the session of the Puritan
Reformed Church of Edmonton calls this the one book that best explains why
faithful Covenanted Presbyterians must, for conscience sake, remain
ecclesiastically separate from all Presbyterian denominations that have
backslidden from second Reformation attainments. (This being the classic
corporate Calvinistic application of such commands as "Nevertheless,
whereto we have already attained,
let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing" [Phil. 3:16,
emphasis added]. It is also the acknowledgement that the Lord has clearly
stated in his Word that he "requireth that which is past" [Eccl.
3:15]). Furthermore, the session of the PRC of Edmonton has noted that this
book "clearly spells out the reasons why to unite with the Revolution
Church (1689) or any of its descendants [The Free Church of Scotland, The Free
Presbyterian Church of Scotland, and American Presbyterian Churches. etc] is to
undermine and subvert the work of the Second Reformation. The argumentation is
cogent [with an abundant supply of documentation]. The section [in the book]
on schism is a "classic of classics" and clearly demonstrates how
very few in our day [even in the Reformed camp] understand the Reformation
doctrine regarding schism, separation and the visible church. In this file you will find the complete table of
contents, the preface and the first reason for dissent. Lord willing, other
sections will follow in time. The table of contents is very valuable as it lays
out in summary [and with a fair amount of detail] the whole scope of the book.
It can serve as a kind of summary of second Reformation thought concerning the
church, state, separation, schism, worship, civil dissent, church planting,
opposition to idolatry and tyranny, and much more!)

The Wonders of the Most High: 125 Years History of

Causes, Ways and Means Whereby the United Provinces, Against the Expectation of
the Whole World, Were Elevated in Such a Marvelous Way from their Previous
Oppression to Such Great, Awe Inspiring Riches and Acclaim. As Related By
Several Eminent Historians, and Which After the Manner of the Time are Compiled
to a Necessary and Profitable Use." This book gives us an indication why
the best theologians in the Netherlands were ready to swear the Solemn League
and Covenant with their brethren in the British Isles [before Cromwell and his
forces ruined these plans for a united international Protestant testimony]. It
shows us that the best Dutch Synods agreed with the Covenanters regarding the
civil magistrate [establishments], God's law, anti-tolerationism, historical
testimony, true unity, false teachers, the Sabbath, "Roman feast
days," worship, etc. Translated here for the first time from Dutch into
English, this book may be a shocker to those not familiar with the Dutch
Reformation and the faithful pronouncements of her Synods. Also available in
softcover [for $19.95-20%=15.96 US funds]).

Act, Declaration, And Testimony, For The Whole Of

Particularly Betwixt The Years 1638 and 1649, Inclusive. As, Also, Against All
The Steps Of Defection From Said Reformation, Whether In Former Or Later Times,
Since The Overthrow Of That Glorious Work, Down To This Present Day (1876)
Upholds the original work of the Westminster
Assembly and testifies to the abiding worth and truth formulated in the
Westminster family of documents. Upholds and defends the crown rights of King
Jesus in church and state, denouncing those who would remove the crown from
Christ's head by denying His right to rule (by His law) in both the civil and
ecclesiastical spheres. Testifies to the received doctrine, government,
worship, and discipline of the Church of Scotland in her purest (reforming)
periods. Applies God's Word to the Church's corporate attainments "with a
judicial approbation of the earnest contendings and attainments of the
faithful, and a strong and pointed judicial condemnation of error and the
promoters thereof" (The Original Covenanter and Contending Witness, Dec. 17/93, p. 558). Shows the church's great
historical victories (such as the National and Solemn League and Covenant,
leading to the Westminster Assembly) and exposes her enemies actions (e.g. the
Prelacy of Laud; the Independency, sectarianism, covenant breaking and ungodly
toleration set forth by the likes of Cromwell [and the Independents that
conspired with him]; the Erastianism and civil sectarianism of William of
Orange, etc.). It is not likely that you will find a more consistent working
out of the principles of Calvinism anywhere -- and fittingly this work has been
called "the most profoundly reasoned document ever issued by the (R.P.)
Church." It deals with the most important matters relating to the
individual, the family, the church and the state, while setting forth a
faithful historical testimony of God's dealings with men during some of the
most important days of church history. A basic text that should be mastered by
all Christians.

"I
have been systematically working through reading the Puritan and Reformed CDs I
purchased.
I must say, there is nothing like them available
anywhere.
It is the most amazing collection of works I know of in
one package to date.
In my opinion,
it far surpasses Ages Software and their collections.*
The
Puritan and Reformed material presented on these CDs is exceptional.
I am
continually amazed at the depth and breadth of information in both collections,
and the rarity of works that I now have at my fingertips.
You
have done an immeasurable service for the Kingdom of Christ in making these CDs
available, and every pastor and theologian should own them without question
(they would be foolhardy to pass them by)."

* It is SWRB's opinion
that Ages has done an excellent job in making various Reformed works available
on CD, so much so that we also distribute a number of their CDs at discounts.
Thus, please don't make more out of our publishing this comment than is
warranted, as this is a comment we received from one of our customers and it
expresses his opinion. As for Ages' work, we rejoice whenever the truth is
published, whether through others or through SWRB (as we play only a very small
part in the revival of classic Reformation, Puritan and Covenanter thought that
is now taking place worldwide through God's marvelous grace). The publication
of the best Reformers and Puritans of the past is one of the greatest needs of
our time, as this extends the blessings that come through faithful preachers
and authors into our day and into the future. Lord willing, the growth in the
publishing of faithful works from the past will help stem the tide of the great
declension and unfaithfulness which we are now witnessing all around us, even
(sadly) among many churches that still call themselves "Presbyterian"
and/or "Reformed." So please pray together with us that our Lord will
multiple the number of faithful publishers and publications, and that He will
give many the heart to stand for the truth no matter the consequences (as He
has done for our faithful forefathers, who resisted Satan and sin unto blood
and even to martyrdom in many cases). -- RB.
"SWRB's
Puritan and Reformation CD libraries are an invaluable source for the study of
the history and theology of classic Reformation theology. The collection is remarkable not only
for depth of content, but also for the rarity of many of the works. Most
seminary libraries will not have even a percentage of the works available on
these CD-ROMs. I cannot imagine anyone working in Reformation / historical
theology that would not want to use the Puritan and Reformed libraries!"

"I
just received your CD collection. One bit of advice: you should instruct your
customers to take about 1 week off just to peruse the tables of contents for
these CD's, followed by another week off, in order to recover from the
state of shock in which they will find themselves.
In all
seriousness, this collection is almost impossible to describe. It has to be
seen to be believed. As a pastor, my library has just increased
dramatically. As
a Ph.D. student in Puritan and Post-Reformation studies, I have immediate
access to many of the same works for which I would normally need to access
through rare book rooms of theological libraries.
Thank you
for this labor of love. Thank you for making it accessible, both financially
and technologically. May the Lord richly bless you for this service to his
people."

available."

"It's
been several weeks now since I received the CDs and have had some time to
digest some of them. All I can say is, "WOW!" This is truly a
library like no other, and has already paid great dividends not only in my own
personal worship and study, but in my teaching as well. I first balked at the price, but after
seeing the vastness of the material, I almost feel as though I'm robbing you!
I pray
that the Lord will allow you to get these materials into the hands of as many
ministers as possible."

SWRB CD comment from Dr. Moore:
This
collection of 62 CDs is a truly astounding accomplishment. There is nothing
like this available to the ordinary Christian on the whole face of the earth.
Now, for
the first time ever, ordinary Christians can have direct and near effortless
access to the very cream of Puritan and Reformed, as well as Covenanter,
literature.
These
books are often in fascinating first editions and many are electronically
linked and indexed for the first time. The ordinary Christian may here dig into
a simply staggering wealth of literature, from devotional and sermonic material
to technical and scholarly works. Even in the days of the Long Reformation itself ordinary
Christians didn't get to see this kind of library -- most couldn't read for a
start, and even those who could, would never have been able to afford to buy
even a hundredth part of the material on these CDs. Truly we are without
excuse!
And the
significance of this collection goes even beyond that. No longer do we have to
wait for modern Reformed publishing houses to predict that a particular
Reformation or Puritan book will be sufficiently popular to make it economical
to reprint, or to deem it "safe" enough to be let loose on the modern
evangelical church. Rather, we are now able to see for ourselves the whole
range of the Puritan and Reformed publishing enterprise, including views that
are usually suppressed by most modern devotees of "Puritan" piety!
Buy these
CDs while you can, and find out for yourself what the First and Second Reformations
were really all about! You'll be truly amazed, and, by God's grace, will grow
from being an ordinary Christian to being an extraordinary one. What they
used to say of the Puritan John Flavel's preaching, can be said of these CDs:
they are "hissing hot"!

"This
side of eternity I'll never be able to repay the favor you have done mankind by
bringing these... CDs together.
The
first week of reading I grew more as a Christian reading those rich, pure
Gospel Commentators than I have in 18 years of Christian life. After reading some of the Puritan
CDs I have to get the Reformation set if it kills me. A fire is burning within
me. These... CDs are liable to start a revival fire unseen in any generation...
the Gospel in its pure form is seen in these... CDs.
Sir, I
cant say enough. What a treasure! I'll never be able to repay you this side of
heaven, but when we get there I am sure you will see the rich fruits of your
labor. God bless you for not being money hungry but wanting to see Christians
grow in the Lord... I love you even though we have never met, you have
helped me in my Christian walk tremendously with these... CDs.
I am not
bragging on the flesh, I am just giving honor where honor is due. The Holy
Ghost will take these CDs and light a fire unseen and unheard of. God bless you
all at Still Waters."

you so very much for the CDs.
I am amazed at the quality and quantity of the
literature...
I cannot
imagine any other single thing being done by any man or group of men in the
earth today that is of such extensive, present, and enduring value as this
CD work is.
God be
praised that he uses sickly and weak men to forward his kingdom, that the work
may not be mistaken to be wrought by the might of men, but by his Spirit. His
strength is perfected in weakness."
