Still Waters Revival Books - Puritan Hard Drive

Bibliography

Ankerberg, John and John Weldon. Protestants and Catholics: Do They Now Agree? Eugene, Oregon: Harvest House, 1995. This book suffers from decisionalism and other errors of contemporary evangelicalism; the volume contains specific criticisms of ECT, and useful observations about the heresies of Rome.

Armstrong, John (ed.) Roman Catholicism: Evangelicals Analyze What Divides and Unites Us. Chicago: Moody Press, 1994. An important book, but some of the contributors are far too conciliatory toward Rome. The best essays are: "Did I Really Leave the Holy Catholic Church?" by William Webster, "The Evangelical Moment?" by John Armstrong, "What Really Caused the Great Divide?" by W. Robert Godfrey, and "What Still Keeps Us Apart?" by Michael Horton.

Beeke, Joel. "Justification by Faith Alone (The Relation of Faith to Justification)," in Justification by Faith Alone (edited by Don Kistler; Morgan, Pa.: Soli Deo Gloria, 1994), pp. 53-105.

Belgic Confession of Faith (1561). Available in many books, including Schaff's Creeds of Christendom.

Bennett, Richard. We Ought to Obey God Rather Than Men. A brief analysis of ECT document. Formerly a Roman Catholic priest, Bennett has many publications which expose the evils of Romish doctrine and practice. Write to: Berean Beacon, P.O. Box 55353, Portland, Oregon 97238

Buchanan, James. The Doctrine of Justification: An Outline of Its History in the Church and of Its Exposition from Scripture. Edinburgh, 1867. Various reprints have been done, the most recent from Banner of Truth.

A concise historic statement of the differences between Rome and Protestants on the subject of justification. It is included in vol. 1 of the Selected Works of John Calvin (edited and translated by Henry Beveridge). 1844; rpt. Grand Rapids: Baker, 1983.

Eire, Carlos M. N. War Against the Idols: The Reformation of Worship from Erasmus to Calvin. Cambridge Univ. Press, 1986). A detailed and scholarly history, showing that the struggle against corrupt worship was a central tenet of the Reformation.

Foxe, John. Acts and Monuments. (First published in 1563, and commonly known as the Foxe's Book of Martyrs.) We insert this entry into our bibliography, lest readers become lulled into false optimism by the siren song of modern toleration. The painful reality of Rome's historic hostility to the gospel, coupled with the faithful testimony of the martyrs, should keep us ever vigilant to earnestly contend for the faith.

French Confession of Faith (1559). Available in many books, including Schaff's Creeds of Christendom.

Gerstner, John H. "The Theological Boundaries of Evangelical Faith," in The Evangelicals: What They Believe, Who They Are, Where They Are Changing (edited by David F. Wells and John D. Woodbridge; Nashville: Abingdon, 1975).

Hunt, Dave. A Woman Rides the Beast. An exposé of Rome and the ECT document. Unfortunately, the book is tainted by the author's adherence to dispensationalism.

Kistler, Don (ed.). Justification by Faith Alone. Morgan, Pa.: Soli Deo Gloria, 1994. The articles in this book are of mixed quality. All authors did not stick to their specific topics, with the result that the volume as a whole contains much repetition. By far, the best essay is Joel Beeke's discussion on the role of faith in justification.

Knox, John. Selected Writings: Public Epistles, Treatises, and Expositions to the Year 1559. Dallas: Presbyterian Heritage, 1995. Of special importance are Knox's pointed statements on worship, contained in the first 100 pages of this volume.
