BANNERMAN, JAMES

Church of Christ: A Treatise on the Nature, Powers, Ordinances, Discipline, and Government of the Christian Church (1869)

Two large volumes. A classic on the Church and worship! This is one of the most extensive studies of its kind ever compiled. Nothing compares to it on this subject. Regarding these gems, Iain Murray has stated,

In our day, however greatly we need an evangelical revival, we need more than that. We need another Reformation, a movement which will go 'to the root of the mischief' and bring back the visible church to the pattern of God's Word in her government, ordinances and ministry. The republication of Bannerman is a step in that direction... For those who wish to study the doctrine of the Church in its several aspects as it was held by the majority of the Reformers, Puritans, Covenanters and leaders of 'The Third Reformation,' it will prove an invaluable textbook.

Volume one deals with the nature and power of the church, containing a lengthy explanation of the Church in its relation to the state (which is one of the best treatments of this topic to be found anywhere!). From there it deals with matters in regard to which church power is exercised (i.e. in regard to doctrine, ordinances, the instrumentality and time of public worship -- with a discussion of holy days, Independency, and confessions).

Volume two continues where volume one left off, providing a lengthy section on the sacraments, covering the parties in whom the right to exercise church power is vested, examining crucial points concerning Christian liberty, comparing the Popish, Prelatic, Independent, Congregational and Presbyterian systems, etc. Nine appendices deal with a wide range of practical topics including union between churches, church/state relations, ordination, and valuable notes on the literature related to this subject. If you are interested in Church issues, it is not likely that you will find a better set.

BARROW, GREG

The Covenanted Reformation Defended (1998)

Unsurpassed on points related to the Lord's supper, separation and covenanting as set forth by the best Reformers and best Reformed churches. This book (in answer to the neopresbyterianism of Richard Bacon) is particularily strong on matters related to the original intent of the Westminster divines! It includes great citations from Calvin and the Westminster Assembly. Deals with many foundational aspects of the Covenanted Reformation (which gave us the Westminster Standards and the Solemn League and Covenant) from numerous original source documents (from the Westminster Assembly's advice to the English Parliament on the Lord's Supper to the official records of Calvin's Covenanting in Geneva).

Comprehensive and compelling, this is a shocking (and sometimes advanced) look at what really took place during both the first and second Reformations -- with extensive quotations from the writings of the major Reformers (not just quotes from what others have written about them). It conclusively and irrefutably demonstrates that those churches which today call themselves Presbyterian (and even many which claim a more general Reformed heritage) have seriously departed from the Scriptural standards, principles and worship of these previous Spirit-led Reformations.

The Covenanted Reformation Defended is written in an easy-to-read and easy-to-understand format and is an unsurpassed work that should not be missed by anyone interested in real Reformation in our day. This is without a doubt the best book to read if you want to understand what it means to be a Covenanter and to walk in the blood-stained footsteps of the witnessing church (Christ's Covenanted and Reformed flock) (Song 1:8)! 318 pages, 8.5" X 11".

BEEKE, JOEL

The Quest for Full Assurance: The Legacy of Calvin and His Successors (1999)

In-depth studies and comparisons of William Perkins, Willem Teellinck, the Westminster Confession, John Owen, Alexander Comrie, and Thomas Goodwin convincingly demonstrate, with fresh insights, that the differences between Calvin and English/Dutch Calvinism on assurance arose primarily from a newly evolving pastoral context -- rather than from foundational variations in doctrine. "The first extensive essay on this important topic to appear in the English language…" (Richard Muller, back cover). "A long-needed and outstanding work on the subject of assurance… of permanent importance for preachers and students" (Iain Murray, back cover). "An erudite treatise… a valuable study in pastoral theology. It will therefore repay careful reading by scholar, pastor and lay people alike" (Preface, p. xvi, Sinclair Ferguson). "It is a joy to see Joel Beeke's simplified revision of his Ph.D. dissertation produced as The Quest for Full Assurance. For the first time in the English language we are offered a superb description and evaluation of the neglected doctrine of Assurance as developed from the Reformers through the Puritans to Alexander Comrie of the Dutch Second Reformation. What strikes this reviewer most, having read the original Ph.D. thesis, is not merely the clarity, simplicity, ease and familiarity with which Dr Beeke moves through his chosen field, but also his evident love for the Lord's people -- both those who have been formative influences on his own spiritual life and studies and those who continue to struggle with the great question 'Am I His or am I not?' May the God of all comfort richly apply to others our good friend's sensitive and warm-hearted treatment of a subject so evidently dear to his own heart." (John M. Brentnall in Peace and Truth 1999:3). Chapters include: "The Early and Medieval Church," 'The Reformation from Luther to Bullinger," Reformed Development in Calvin and Beza," "The Fathers of English Puritanism and the Dutch Second Reformation," "English Puritanism and the Westminster Confession, Chapter 18," "John Owen," "Alexander Comrie," "Thomas Goodwin: The Merging of English-Dutch Thinking of Assurance," and an appendix on " The Dutch Second Reformation." One of the best books on this most important (and practical) topic -- maybe even the best! Contains a 68-page bibliography, an 11-page index of names and subjects and a 3-page index of biblical references. 407 pages.

BOSTON, THOMAS

The Works of Thomas Boston

(12 volumes, 1853)

"One of the most valuable sets of all time, Boston's Works have been read and re-read ever since their first publication in the 18th century" (Joel Beeke's Reformation Heritage Books email of Aug. 27, 2002).

By common consent Boston takes rank in the highest class of our practical religious writers; and in respect of spiritual usefulness his works have largely followed him. Except the Shorter Catechism and the Pilgrim's Progress, no book, perhaps, has contributed so much to mould the religious character of Scotland as his Fourfold State (F.C. Magazine, VI, p. 256 as cited in Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 479).

Ian Tallach, in the Foreword to The Beauties of Thomas Boston (p. xii) states,

Of the many great divines who have adorned the ecclesiastical and theological scene in Scotland, Thomas Boston must be reckoned as among the greatest. Dr. Andrew Thomson who wrote Thomas Boston: His Life and Times, asserts that 'if Scotland had been searched during the earlier part of the eighteenth century there was not a minister of Christ within its bounds who, alike in personal character and in the discharge of his pastoral functions, approached nearer the apostolic model than did this man of God.'

BROWN (of Wamphray), JOHN

An Exposition of the Epistle of Paul to the Romans, With Large Practical Observations; Delivered in Several Lectures (1766 edition)

This commentary has been called, "perhaps the best exposition of the Epistle yet to be found" (J.W.C., cited in the Johnston's Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 341). Charles Spurgeon comments, "By a Calvinist of the old school. Heavy, perhaps, but precious." At the very least it should be considered a classic Covenanter's commentary. John Brown of Wamphray was one of Samuel Rutherford's favorite students. He was ejected in 1662, imprisoned and cruelly treated until he suffered exile to the Netherlands -- all for steadfastly maintaining the principles of the Covenanted Reformation. In fact, A.N. in the preface to this volume notes that, among other things, "the particular grounds and causes why he was thus inhumanly and barbarously treated, was his strict attachment to, and maintaining the binding force and perpetual obligations of the nation's solemn vows and covenants; his refusing acceptation of the then sinful Indulgences; ... his public and zealous testifying against licentious tolerations," etc. While in exile he wrote thirteen books. Johnston notes that Brown "has been regarded the most important theologian of the second period of Scottish Presbyterianism" (Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 339). This commentary gives us a good indication as to why Brown is so highly regarded among faithful Calvinists, godly historians and numerous commentators. 614 pages.

BUSHELL, MICHAEL

The Songs of Zion: A Contemporary Case for Exclusive Psalmody (third edition, 1999)

Contains one of the best explanations of the Scriptural law of worship (also known as the regulative principle of worship) in print today. For this and a number of other reasons this was one of the most significant books published in the 20th century concerning worship! Furthermore, it demonstrates and defends (from Scripture, history and the creeds) the Reformation practice of exclusive Psalmody. It dovetails splendidly with Eire's celebrated War Against the Idols, setting forth foundational principles that lay at the very heart of Reformation thought, theology and practice. For as Bushell points out, "Purity of worship and uniformity of worship go hand in hand because they are both founded upon the assumption that the Scriptures contain clear, sufficient and authoritative directions as to the proper way of worshiping God. The diversity of worship practice that we see in our churches arises ultimately from a denial of this assumption, and it constitutes, therefore, a denial of a central aspect of the doctrine of the sufficiency of Scripture. There is much more at stake, then, in this whole discussion than the mere observance or non-observance of a few external rites" (2nd edition, 1993, p. 3). If you are a Calvinist and have not read this book, you are missing a real treat!
